Wassail

Ingredients:

- 6 Fuji Apples

- 1 cup Brown Sugar

- 1 cup Water

- 72 oz English-style Ale

- 750mL Madeira

- 10 Whole Cloves

- 10 Whole Allspice Berries

- 1 Cinnamon Stick, 2-inches long

- 1 tsp Ground Ginger

- 1 tsp Ground Nutmeg

Supplies:

- 8x8 Glass Baking Dish

- Apple Corer

- Large Slow-Cooker

- Cheesecloth

- Kitchen Twine

- Ladle

Method:

- Preheat oven to 350°F

- Remove cores from Apples and set in the baking dish standing upright

- Fill Apples with Brown Sugar and pour Water into the dish

- Bake until tender, about 45 minutes

- Pour the Ale and Madeira into the slow cooker and add Ginger and Nutmeg

- Put the Allspice Berries, Cinnamon, and Cloves in the cheesecloth and tie with kitchen twine

- Set to medium and bring it to at least 120°F (do not allow to boil)

- Add the baked Apples and the liquid from the dish into the cooker

- Ladle into cups to serve

The Secret History Heights in Order (tallest to shortest)

I don’t know why but I need to have a height line up for characters, so I am very attuned to markers as I read and this is what I found: 

1. Henry (Over 6′3)

2. Bunny (6′3)

3. Richard

4. Francis

5. Charles

6. Camilla

Reasons: The beginning of the book, when describing the Greek kids, Richard states that Henry is tallest with Bunny second and shorter “not by much.” It says, as Bunny falls, that he’s 6′3. So Henry is likely 6′4ish. Much later, there’s a scene that states Francis gives his old clothes to Richard and Charles (p 426 in Vintage edition copy). It says Francis is “taller than Charles, and thinner than both of us.” This implies Richard is taller than Francis (Unless they’re precisely the same. But he’s not shorter.). So Charles is the shortest guy. Obviously, I assume Camilla is the shortest because she’s a woman and is not mentioned being particularly tall and none of the guys is mentioned being particularly short.

Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

- 24 oz Brioche Bread, cubed and staled

- 5 cups Half & Half

- 3 Eggs

- 3 Egg Yolks

- 1/2 cup Sugar

- 1/2 cup Brown Sugar

- 1 Cinnamon Stick

- 15 Whole Cloves

- 15 Whole Black Peppercorns

- 1 tsp Dry Orangepeel

- 1 tsp Grated Nutmeg

- 2 oz Spiced Rum

- Chocolate Morsels

Supplies:

- 6-cup Blender

- 6-quart Dutch Oven

- 2-cup microwave-safe glass

- Small Strainer

Method:

- Set Bread in dutch oven and add Chocolate Morsels, allowing Chocolate to fall between cubes

- Pour 2 cups Half & Half into microwave-safe glass and add Cinnamon, Cloves, Peppercorns, Orangepeel, and Nutmeg; microwave for 1 minute and stir, then microwave another minute

- Add Eggs and Egg Yolks into blender and stir on low until color lightens

- Add Sugar and Brown Sugar slowly, followed by 3 cups Half & Half

- Add Spiced Half & Half through strainer

- Add Rum and turn blender off

- Pour the Custard into the dutch oven, press Bread flat, and allow Bread to absorb for 2 hours before adding to oven

- Preheat oven to 325°F

- Bake covered 1-1/2 to 2 hours, then remove and allow to cool 30 minutes
