A little late but super proud to share my contributions to Artists Remaking Medicine by Emily F Peters and Procedure Press - a book on art's collaborative role in healthcare and medicine.

My favourite piece to put together (slide one) shows the story of Yoko and Avery Sen. Yoko is an electronic musician who fell ill and was bombarded by the dissonance of the ICU environment and relentless beeping of her monitoring equipment. She lamented what she thought would have been the final sounds she'd hear.

Thankfully, Yoko pulled through, and with her partner Avery, have since worked with one of the largest companies in this space to redesign their alarm tones.

The rectangular vignettes in this drawing are meant to mirror the rhythm of the monitor's beeping, as are the tiny highlights that curve across the layout within each one. I wanted to express the feeling of being with a loved one in the ICU; the warmth of old memories and the presence of those closest to you interlocking with the reality of an incredibly difficult situation and an annoying fricken beep beep beep beep beep beep beep

first of all, i think that jameson would be IN love with this baby even before it was born

like he would always try talking to her so that she would know his voice

he’s the most encouraging husband during her birth (even though he secretly wants to throw up)

as soon as they find out that avery is pregnant she immediately wants to tell everyone that they know

they tell everyone in a really cute special way that’s like personal to that person

like to tell all of jameson’s brothers it’s a riddle that they all solve at like the same time before they start sobbing

avery gets really excited about names and is always suggesting stuff to jameson

jameson reads all of the parenting books just so that he’s prepared

my opinion but avery would be the prettiest pregnant woman ever

jameson is secretly worried about having a kid because he didn’t grown up with a father to set an example for him

they have a really big gender reveal party and avery is the one who guesses it right

jameson is always under the impression that if she does anything while pregnant she’s gonna get hurt so he always makes sure to check on her

the probably both cry when the baby is born (and so does anyone else in the room tbh)

he always buys here gift baskets to make her feel better (or baby clothes because like who dosen’t like baby clothes)

he’s also the one who provides for all of her weird craving that i men

they always joke back and forth about who’s the favorite parent before she’s even born

he’s the one who deals with all of her hormonal mood swings (WHICH I KNOW SHE HAS)

music is one of the things that soothe the babies kicking so they’re always trying to guess on who her favorite artist is

its something random like tyler the creator (honestly real)

the nursery they set up is super cute

sometimes they sit in the nursery together and talk about their future and stuff

ALSO THE NURSERY WOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BUT LIKE WITH MORE GREENS AND BLUES AND STUFF

The first member of the Power Pills. He's shy, awkward, and is somehow the unofficial leader of the Power Pills. Mostly everyone looks to him to make the final call on stuff because he's been around the longest.

GUY FOUST

Caleb's roommate and best friend. Went with Caleb during his first superhero mission and got physically shot while there.

KATE DHANANI

A friend of Guy's who eventually became a friend of Caleb's. She's the martial arts trainer for the Power Pills.

AVERY RODRIGUEZ

The first supervillain created by Future Tech. He's 16 years old and was given to Future Tech as an experiment by his parents in exchange for promotions.

TRAVIS BIRMAN

Guy's childhood friend and Merri's boyfriend. He's just the only friend character who doesn't know that his friend is a superhero.

TEAM WAX GUISE

DAN WIRSCH | WAX GUISE

The second member of the Power Pills. He's the literal embodiment of a theater kid. Despite his energetic and carefree attitude, he's one of the smartest members of the team.

JASON KENDI

Jason is Dan's roommate and the go-to costume designer for the Power Pills. He's a MASSIVE nerd and loves doing closet cosplay. He seems to have some kind of connection to Lightbringer.

LUCY CIPHER

The manager (and drum player) of Dan's band. She matches him in energy and personality.

NICO HYLAND

Lucy's fiancee and the keyboardist for Dan's band. He's the type to sit back and listen to Lucy's energetic ramblings for hours.

MAX ARMIJO

Dan's second roommate and lead guitarist for Dan's band. He's a more successful actor than Dan and does his best to help Dan get roles.

TEAM BULLETPROOF

MERRI BODKIN | BULLETPROOF

The third member of the Power Pills. She's a sweet-hearted individual with boundless optimism. She's the heart of the group. However a lot of her personality DOES come from the fact that she's a Catholic and her suppressed frustration tends to come out when she's fighting as Bulletproof in the form of a SUPER brutal fighting style.

AMBER LUPE

One of Merri's best friends. She is just as kind and sweet as Merri, but much less energetic.

PERCY VAN STONE

Merri's foil. She is energetic, she is bold, she loves everything Merri hates.

TEAM QUICKWIT

KRISTY EDA | QUICKWIT

The fourth member of the Power Pills and the resident "basically normal guy but with a bow" of the team. She's an independent artist trying to make it in the art world.

GEMMA VOSS

The sculptor to Kristy's painter. She has almost no shame and has no problems both speaking and acting her mind.

JAKE WESTLAKE

Probably also an artist of some kind but we haven't seen them do any sort of art so I'm not sure. They're relentlessly supportive of their friends.

TATE PALMER | STREAMLINE

Tate is the fifth member of the Power Pills as well as the most energetic. She's a massive cosplayer and makes her living selling her work online.

SIBYL DEMIR | THE WEB

Sibyl is the sixth and newest member of the Power Pills. He's the resident scientist, studying biology. He's been through a lot, but once he settles into a network of supporting friends, he reveals that he is a a snarky, strong-willed man.

SEBASTIAN CROWL

A superpowered cult member who saved Sibyl and Caleb's lives when they were captured. He sacrificed himself to help the two of them escape. His status is unknown though he reassured Sibyl that the cult wouldn't kill him.

BENNY O'KEEFE

Benny is Sibyl's biology teacher and is the person who helped Sibyl through the darkest moment of his life.

VINNY RAMONE

Not seen onscreen, but he's Sibyl's ex.

JENNA BEGER

Sibyl's childhood friend who tried to trade away his life in order to join The Cult of Lacrima. Her status is also unknown.

TEAM ███████

MATT NOTTON

The recipient of the Pink Pill who needs to be put on a GODDAMN LEASH. The only pill candidate who decided to use their powers for selfish reasons.

DAMIEN BRIDGES

A man that Matt kidnapped in an attempt to learn how to control his powers. He's... god he's still there.

DALTON RENTFRO

Matt's teammate and a MASSIVE Matt hater.

The person who gives out the pills to the candidates. He's stoic but generally friendly.

Only called "Scarecrow Lady" in comic so far, this is the woman who broke into Merri's dressing room in book 3 trying to kidnap her. Caleb erased her memory of their identities but she hinted that she had something "Way better" than her memories.

LONDON KURTZ

A mean girl who peeked in high school. She is obsessed with status.

PHYLLIS WORRALL

One of London's obligatory lackeys. The other of which, Lilith, apparently left London very recently for unknown reasons and has not been seen onscreen.

KRAVEN GREEVES

The owner of the martial arts dojo that the Power Pills train at. He knows what's going on with the superheroes, but he knows it's not his place to say anything.

i see you creating and planning and Thinking. you’ve made characters with attention and uhhh scrutiny, with so much care that they feel real, less like a tale with a lesson, and more like an account recorded long ago. i see your work, and i see so many places where you made distinct and thoughtful choices—in color, lighting, shape, but also in positions, and perspectives, and shots, to the point where your pieces evolve into a sort of choreography. there’s motion and movement and apparel, elements that communicate so much nuance and greatly carry some implications, and i feel like that’s an incredible sort of attention, a quality of skill most marvelous. there’s an emotion and mood in your pieces (especially with avery and/or ansel) that i feel is very unique and distinct, and whether it’s intentional or intuitive, it always seems very… thorough. so fleshed out and multitudinous. i’m sorry for being incoherent, but i mean to say that your work is full of depth and creative thought, and it’s a depth and creativity that is so elegantly suffused into your work that i often miss it, but has suddenly become so apparent to me. there’s that piece with avery with his head on the table with a cup of water in front of him (heat wave?); the expression on his face, combined with the positon of his folded arms and head slumped on top of them, create a figure who exudes exhaustion (which sounds oxymoronic), and then you placed a cup of water in front of him, and let our sight of his face pass through it, so that his eyes not only look at the cup with a mixture of misery and desperation, but also to the audience with a plea, for reprieve from his anguish. and you did all the lines in redder hues and used a warm yellow for the tile and water (instead of a blue!!) and surrounded the work in a red frame, which (alongside the red lines) well communicate that feeling of relentless heat. the entire work is like an ode to misery of those hot summer days where the sun is trying to bake you alive and the air is trying to crush you with a weight of a boulder, and it’s so succinctly captured with one person, one object, and a bare setting. which is just super awesome!! that skill, of creating a picture that captures the atmosphere of the moment like that, is just in such great quality within you. it’s true of all your pieces, and i feel that there is a great amount of deliberation for these productions, and i feel that it comes together all so nicely! with such grace and completeness do your pieces appear, that an observer would first believe a piece to be a real moment in time before a choreographed design. i can see your genius in your art, and i find it tremendously impressive. your art captures and displays a range of themes and moods, and each one can stand singularly with a thematic might. i feel somewhat abashed for not recognizing i your creative process before now, but i hope that you know that the depths and multitudes within you, and which you have put into your work, indeed reach the eye with profundity and impact, and that your works are something i remember, and keep in mind when doing my own works of art.

i saw this in my inbox this morning and have been debating whether to even post it, because it somehow feels selfish to post it (it's incredibly positive towards me), but also selfish to keep it hidden in my inbox and never let you know how i felt reading it. but i think i need to post it after all, since you took the time to write all this, and i want to show my appreciation. thank you for truly looking at my art through such a thoughtful lens, and writing such beautiful prose and analyses. you made me notice things about my own art that i probably wouldn't have noticed, artistic decisions that i may have subconsciously made. i'm going to come back and read this message again whenever i feel bad about my art in the future, or when i feel cringe about posting my oc work again, and remind myself that there's at least one viewer out there who is understanding it 💛

Scarlet Hollow characters + tattoos

Thinking about Avery with tattoos inspired me to write about the others too, so here goes:

Avery. Loves everything about tattoos: the art, the sensation of the needle, the memories tied to them. They see their body as a canvas, so they have plenty of tattoos. Some have a deep meaning (a small Winnie The Pooh over his heart for aunt Winnie), some mark their passions (vines/ivy on their forearm, a synth keyboard on their knuckles), others simply have a beautiful design (a button on their ankle because they loved the creepy aesthetic of "Coraline"). They end up asking Reese for one of his ditchling drawings to get it tattooed.

Reese. When he was "sick" his mother forbade tattoos categorically (what if he got a bad reaction?). He used to feel sad about it and fantasize about the rad tattoos he'd get if he could, but eventually he came to terms with it. When he found out about his supernatural nature he felt relieved that he didn't have any tattoos because they would look bad (or get ruined) when his skin stretched. Even if he couldn't get them himself, when he was a teenager he learnt how to give stick and poke tattoos out of boredom. After the events of the game, he decides to become a tattoo artist to earn some money and gets fairly popular for his spooky designs. Reese jokes that he's probably the only tattoo artist with no tattoos in the world.

Stella. She asked Reese to tattoo Gretchen's paw print on her wrist when she was 18. They did it secretly because Dr. Kelly wouldn't have allowed it - they were super excited, shushing each other's giggles until it was done. She didn't know much about the aftercare so the design faded a little, but she loves it anyway.

Kaneeka. She always liked tattoos, but Sybil was against the idea ("your body is a temple and you should not defile it, it's perfect as it is") and she didn't want to disappoint her mother. However, when she went to college and tasted freedom, she decided it was time to do it. She got three small tattoos in areas that could be easily concealed. Two of them are subtle anime references, and the third is a little chameleon.

Oscar. He wouldn't have thought of getting a tattoo in his life (even if he has always found them attractive in other people). However, his wife said that they should get a little rose on the ankle when they had Rosalina. She was super excited and managed to convince Oscar; she always made him more adventurous. Now Oscar feels a bit conflicted when he sees his tattoo. On the one hand, it reminds him of the past and makes him wonder if his ex thinks of him and their daughter when she sees hers. On the other, he believes that it's good to have a symbol of his love for Rosalina forever with him.

Tabitha. She explains why tattoos are terrible using the exact same words that Pearlanne did. She has basically been conditioned to be a "good daughter and citizen", and that means no tattoos. However, one time in highschool Stella mentioned that they should get matching tattoos in the future and the idea hit Tabitha like a truck. She refused immediately, but she found herself thinking about it for weeks. She still thinks about it sometimes.
