Fic-to-Art #38: Ozai carries Azula to the physicians' wing

This has been done for A WHILE now, but I didn't post it because the past days have been chaotic and not just on a personal level. For one thing, I really wasn't eager to drop this when people were losing their shit massively over the liveaction and its recontextualization of Azula and Ozai's dynamics, I didn't look forward to releasing this just to be told that whatever I've done in my story is somehow wrong, sooooooooo... that held me back, for a few days.

Then? The AI-Tumblr deal started to be talked about and I may or may not have freaked out about that too. Sooo... this is the first glazed and nightshaded piece of my creation, as consequence. The original, clean and proper version is available in my Patreon. Is this me being a dick to Tumblr-only people? Unfortunately, it very much isn't, I'm not trying to say that if you want the best iterations of my art, you should pay me for it... this is squarely, entirely, at staff/the CEO's feet. Obviously, there's the insecure side of me that goes "what makes you think they'd steal YOUR art when there are so many better artists out there!" but ultimately? AI is about taking everything en masse. It isn't a matter of developing a criteria about who makes the better art... it's just taking EVERYTHING and trying to repurpose it in whatever twisted way it needs to. Therefore? I think my choice is more of a matter of caution than anything else. Once AI bullshit dies out (and I really hope it does), we may just return to the same level of quality across all my accounts. For now, it is what it is.

ANYWAY! Point is this artwork is very much what my Patrons happened to vote for this month, a very shocking scene where Ozai reacted in the least foreseen way to Azula being attacked. Azula's confusion/terror comes from a place of not knowing what to do and being powerless to stop her father even if she doesn't feel comfortable with his help... but for once, Ozai isn't making a dreadful choice that will only devastate his daughter. He's actually worried about her health... and feeling genuine guilt over what landed her in the situation where she was in danger in the first place. Yes. I like me my complex Ozai who finally learned actions have consequences. He bores me to death otherwise :') if anyone STILL doesn't know that this whole situation is Gladiator-specific, then I shall clarify fully: this is artwork based on my fic. It's about a story that has been developing these characters for ALMOST ELEVEN YEARS now. It has nothing to do with whatever's going on in canon or in the liveaction, the scene in question was written almost two years ago and the artwork proposed and voted for several days before the liveaction aired. Ergo: there is no connection between this and that. Nor am I saying through this piece that Ozai is a good father. He is not. He can still be an interesting character to work with on a narrative level anyway :')

Alright. With that out of the way, hope you guys like this piece! The big one I haven't posted is ALSO finished, also glazed and nightshaded, but I think I might just end up posting it on the 26th if I don't have time to do anything big for our eleventh anniversary... yep, I'm so busy I don't even have a huge project in mind this time. Also? I have a lot to write and I'm finally happily writing it, and I would like to continue doing that...

WIP Questionnaire

Thanks @buffythevampirelover for the tag! This game looks fun!

Rules: answer as few or as many as you'd like!

1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

TSP: Lexi was! TSP started out as a school project, and we had to create a character sheet for our first person narrator! That was "Alexia" who is now just "Lexi" (but her full name is still Alexia).

SOTL: The concept! "School for fairy tale characters" was basically it. I got discouraged a bit when I found out this concept already existed, but that didn't mean I couldn't do my own take!

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

My favorite types of intros for TV shows are original theme songs or very catchy instrumental music. 30-60 seconds is a good length. I'd hope that for TSP and SOTL. Hope this isn't a cop-out.

3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?

TSP: My favorite characters to write for are Lexi, Gwen, Akash, Robbie, and Carmen. Lexi because the arc I gave her is an exaggerated version of something that speaks a lot to me. Gwen because I wasn't expecting her to be as interesting as she ended up being planned to be. Robbie and Akash because of how funny and sweet their dynamic is. Yes, I love them separately, but they're a package set. Carmen because she's just so damn interesting I love studying her under a microscope.

SOTL: I am barely into writing it, but it's Jack at the moment. Shocker, he has three chapters while Tierney and Úrsula have one each! But the reason is that he is average at everything, but he doesn't let that get him down! He's funny and relatable and a dork.

4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?

TSP: Hm, good question. The only thing coming to mind right now is Young Justice (the cartoon). Starts out with this fun group of kids, becomes extremely dark. Ensemble cast. Sneaking around. Superpowers. Fight scenes. Drama.

SOTL: Insert fairy tale retelling here.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?

TSP: Juggling everything. The world building, I guess. Making all the characters distinct was something I struggled at for a while, but I'm getting much better at it. Trying to figure out how the world works is challenging, but I am having fun. But juggling all the moving parts to make it cohesive is a challenge.

SOTL: What is plot?!! Also battling my ambition to do every fairy tale ever. I'm gonna have to make a lot of background characters that will get their own side stories separate from the main series to get all that I want. I probably will do that.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

TSP: Yep! Alium has a lot of fantasy creatures, animal hybrids, and fun things I just made up. Custos the dragon is the only truly prominent one right now. He's a blue fire dragon and is adorable. I also have kitsunes. Animal hybrids include unibison, ferretsnakes, cowyotes, beaverducks. Things I made up include the elemental foxes and blue hedgehogs.

SOTL: Hofiwi is an anthropomorphic bear! She was cursed to be anthropomorphic, this is not a normal thing in this world. I love her and she's just planned at the moment. Can't wait to do more.

7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

TSP: Hovercrafts, dragons, teleporting, trains, and some other power-based travel

SOTL: I'm still figuring this out no one has gone anywhere yet. Dragons or carriages would be cool. Maybe I can mix them with something modern to fit the setting.

8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?

TSP: World building! Specifically the power database since that will be the backbone for everything.

SOTL: Reading fairy tales... I need to do that more

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?

TSP: Powers, diverse cast, queer/disability rep

SOTL: same as TSP but fairy tales!

10. What are your hopes for your wip?

If I see one (1) fanart between either my life will be complete.

MHA Villain Speculation - The Curious Case of Mustard

Time for another edition of villain speculation! Been a while since I really wanted to take a break after the Nemesis posting, but ready to get back on track with the least used member of the Vanguard Action Squad - one I think might have been removed from a great purpose.

Yep, I'm talking about everyone's favorite condiment faux-war criminal: Mustard!!

So what's the deal? What do I think Mustard was supposed to be? Well, first thing off the bat is that I do believe that, at one point, Mustard was supposed to be a Villain of greater narrative and that isn't too farfetched given the pic below.

Before Twice, Magne, or even Compress, Mustard was one of five Villains that arose upon hearing Stain's message in Chapter 57 of MHA. He's lumped in with Toga, Dabi, Spinner and Gigantomachia - all four who became major players in the arcs to come. So it's not unreasonable to assume that Hori at least had some plan involving him that was probably scrapped.

Another reason why I believe he was supposed to be someone of greater narrative importance has to be his deal when compared to the other defeated Vanguard back at the Training Camp. Motivation wise, Mustard stands out in that, unlike both who are described as bloodthirsty sadists, Mustard's reason for villainy has him fit rather neatly among the main Vanguard - sharing their disillusionment and bitterness towards Hero Society. In his case, from his fight with Kendo and Tetsutetsu he rants about hero schools fawning over 'one trick ponies' just because they go to famous schools, which suggests he might have turned to crime out of disdain over never being recognized compared to those in UA. Could he have been a Hero hopeful, but was rejected? Someone who was seriously neglected or bullied for having a strong Quirk that backfired on him? There's a lot to unpack with him compared to Goto or Moon, which is probably why, even after being absent for so long, he's rather popular among the League.

So then, if Horikoshi clearly had plans in mind for him, why wasn't he spared in the training camp and allowed to be with the League, or even join in the Final War?

Well...

If I had to guess, his Quirk wounded up being too broken to keep around. If I were to label Mustard, he's more aligned as a 'One Arc Wall'. Someone whose power is legitimate enough to prove a worthy obstacle...but can't be aligned to stay sturdy past one arc.

See, one of the downsides of making a Villain with an AOE spread power is that, while its good for tension in one, it's a pain in the ass to factor in for story progression or long term fights going forward. Mustard's power pretty much is an instant win usually since people can't really afford to go in his gas or they get KO'ed, and trying to find ways around it is bound to get pretty convoluted. It's also a double edge sword since, unlike Dabi's fire, his gas prevents him from fighting alongside his teammates, which means if he did stick around, he's pretty much be forced to rely on just his gun. And since a gun can't really be used on the main Heroes due to their lack of bulletproofness most of the time (unless they're fodder), his ability to be used without it being cheap is hampered further.

So it's easy to see why Mustard the Gunslinger was probably chosen to get the axe while others with easier powers were allowed to stay. While I think Moon and Goto were for their personality's clashing a bit too much with the dynamic Hori wanted for the League going forward, Mustard is what I believe to be purely just a story preservation move. Which is a shame since you can clearly see Hori had some idea of what to do with him.

But that being said...what specifically do I think his role would have been had he said. Well, while I am just going off of my hunches, I do have to turn to the character I think would fulfill his original purpose.

That's right, Skully the Gas Advisor! I think that the scrapped plans for Mustard was inherited by Skully into what his role would be in the Second War.

That's not to say I think Mustard would have joined the MLA or something like that...though it would make for a good AU!

Nah, I think it's more of a matter of a role he usurpred from Mustard - that being a final level threat that would have taken out a major character and go on to be a final obstacle for the Heroes. It's not an outrageous conclusion to make, especially given Skully's similarities to Mustard. Skully's design also follows a war theme, albeit in a stronger direction given his MLA ties, he's also a Gas Villain (albeit not as broken), and his whole personality is arrogantly promoting a 'might is right' that favors strong Quirks, which while not 1:1 with Mustard does still align with Mustard the Shooter's implied complex over being snubbed by 'one note' Quirks compared to his own. It's not hard to imagine Mustard being the one in Skully's place trying to reclaim Gigantomachia, and even have his whole 'Gas that doesn't knock you the heck out' deal be explained by Mustard having a Quirk Awakening during MVA that allows him to use non-harming Gas to save his fellow teammates. In short, while Mustard couldn't be used quite again (despite how much I want him to return), Hori likely decided to reuse his concept into Skully, who ended up being the slayer of Midnight and Mina's Nemesis in the end.

Of course, as I say this, that also begs the question: Do I think that Mustard was really slated to kill Midnight? Well, if it wasn't for Skully's existence being the caused, I'd have said no, but with him just having quite the number of similarities to Mustard, I have to say - at the very least - Mustard being responsible for killing a major Hero was at least on the cards. And given their similar powers, it's possible he could have been concieved as the League's version of Midnight like how Magne was for Tiger of the Wild, Wild, Pussycats. A smug, yet practical kid versus a flirty, yet nurturing, adult. Ultimately, when Midnight would try to put the League and Machia asleep on their way to Shigaraki - Mustard might've been slated to gun her down and off of the giant to save his crew since he would be immune to her Quirk. Can definitely see that as like a turning point for him into a proper Villain like with Toga and her resolve hardening from Twice's death.

Of course, this is just my speculation! It's entirely possible, he really was just introduced to be a Training Camp Threat and just discarded afterwards. Though, with him being absent for the Final War, it makes me wonder if, in the epilogue of the series will see him again. Perhaps properly rehabilitated and given a second chance.

Considering the League's current state, it'd be nice to at least have one member with hope of getting a normal life...and, you know, probably not dead XD

Echo and player choice: Horror through powerlessness

I have so many thoughts about how Echo plays with player agency to subvert the expectations of a visual novel and add to its horror.

When you start Echo you have little reason to see Chase as anything more than a typical player character. He has a defined personality and established ties to the cast and the town so he’s definitely not a blank slate protagonist. But you still get to make plenty of choices in the prologue. And ultimately, in typical dating-simulator fashion, you choose a character’s route to follow. So far it feels like you’re making choices as Chase that affect the story, and part of those choices is, eventually choosing which cute anthro guy (or girl) you’ll romance, and getting one of various endings. But as you play through the routes things start to get a bit...weird. This start with the choices beginning to get sinister, or cryptic, often signified by a specific musical cue. And as the routes go on, we get more and more hints as to what’s really going on. TJ’s route demonstrates how little control we the player have over Chase, our supposed player character, and also doubles as a commentary on the nature of player choice and romance in a dating sim. The game expects that you chose this route partly because you find TJ appealing as a character, so as Chase begins to show attraction to TJ, he and the player are essentially on the same page. But TJ doesn’t really reciprocate in any way other than friendship, and any tells that Chase picks up on are entirely innocent as far as TJ is concerned. Then Chase starts getting jealous (to the point of malicious) when Julian shows up, resulting in a ‘confession’ scene that looks like this.

Through this, Echo makes a commentary on how the mindset behind a dating sim is...kinda messed up. You use your player character, Chase, as a conduit for your own choices and wish fulfillment. And pursue the romantic interest of the route with single minded determination in a way that is kind of possessive. And you get to witness that as Chase’s behaviour gets more and more uncomfortable, and you relate to him less and less. This is also seen outside the romance in the overarching mystery of the letters from Sydney. Chase comes to his own conclusions about what’s really going on in the scavenger hunt, and intervenes in ways the player has no control over. Eventually he goes out to find the last clue, and replaces it with a different piece of paper, which we don’t see. Our player character is not just acting without us, but also witholding information from us. This culminates in the route’s ending, where Chase becomes a full fledged villain, murdering Flynn, manipulatively co-ercing TJ into keeping the secret. And this is the only outcome, the player’s choices don’t affect this ending. If you thought Chase was just a blank slate protag for your choices and TJ was the romantic ‘goal’, you are throughly proven wrong. Chase is a character, with a mind and goals of his own, and TJ’s lack of agency, and being objectified as a cute innocent love interest to be protected is the tragedy of the entire route. Here, Echo turns the fundamentals of a dating sim VN on their head to tell a horror story, all without ever explicitly breaking the fourth wall.

Leo and Jenna’s routes throw another spanner in the works by introducing us to the ghost of Samuel Ayers...our actual player character. Yep, the whole time, you were not playing the character you thought you were. You control the ghost of Sam Ayers, a resident of the town who died years ago, and whose ghost has been possessing Chase ever since the day Sydney died. You control Sam, who is controlling Chase. You make decisions as Sam, and Chase follows Sam’s instruction. This changes the player’s understanfing of their control over the narrative. Because the character we’re actually controlling is someone we don’t really know. And it’s a great way to get under the player’s skin. It also allows for an interesting dynamic between Chase and Sam. Near the end of Leo and especially Jenna’s route, Chase starts to recognise Sam’s presence as a voice in his head. This allows for an effect similar to a fourth wall break in other games, such as Kris becoming aware of the player’s control in Deltarune. In fact, both games frame the act of player control as a spectral possession that supresses the protagonists’s own personality. But it does this without explicitly breaking that fourth wall. Which is good, because while fourth wall breaks can work in a horror game, recklessly shattering it can risk dimantling the atmosphere of the game’s world, making this less scary by being too overtly meta. Chase doesn’t become aware of the player, and thus question his free will, but does become aware of Sam. Still, in some ways, this is more comforting than TJ’s route, because it restores the player’s illusion of control. Sure, we’re not playing as who we thought we were, but we’re still in control, right? We make choices as Sam, who will in turn guide Chase to good or bad endings depeding on our outcome. That’s what happens in Carl, Jenna and Leo’s routes. After all, what is a visual novel without choice? It’s the only substantial gameplay element this genre has. We’re still in the driver’s seat...right?

And then we get to Flynn’s route.

And even that guarantee is ripped away from us.

Over the course of Flynn’s route, Sam starts exerting control to force Chase to make decisions the player may not want. He forces Chase to condemn Flynn before the group, hiding the truth of Chase’s own past actions. Eventually, he stops possessing Chase entirely, and takes control of Flynn instead. We now follow Flynn as the POV character, for the rest of the route. And here, too, Sam starts restricting the choices you can make as a player, directing Flynn to an outcome you are kept in the dark about. This culminates in the scene in the vision of the Smoke Room where Echo plays its final card.

So you know, Sam, the ghost of a dead townsperson of Echo who has been our player character this whole time? Yeeeaahh...turns out we weren’t really controlling him either. ‘Sam’ is simply an offshoot of the ghostly entity behind all of Echo’s supernatural happpenings. One that creates simulations, echoes, if you will, of those long dead to coerce, control and torment the townspeople for its own ends. We were playing as the true eldritch villain of the game this entire time. Our capacity for any control over the events of the story was a lie. Any say we had over the story has well and truly gone, and we can only watch as Flynn is destroyed by his single minded search for the truth, transformed horrifyingly into the Socket Monster. Much as TJ’s route punishes the player for thinking of Chase as a mere blank slate for their actions, by presenting him as a person with goals of his own, so too Flynn’s route punishes you for underestimating Sam, by proving he is far more powerful than we ever expected.

Echo’s subversion of player choice is fascinating because it has so many layers. In TJ’s route you slowly realise you’re not in control of the person who you think is your player character, and that he has goals outside of you. So when his actions get progressively more messed up, you can’t stop him. Jenna’s route had you realise you’re controlling someone completely different, and while you can steer things to a good or bad outcome, you watch Chase grapple with the existential nightmare that someone else is making all his decisions, and we the player don’t really know anything about who we’re actually controlling. And Flynn’s route, pulls the final rug out from under you, as you you realise you’re not even in control of Sam, because he’s in the service of the very entity you’ve watched hurt these characters over and over again, route after route. And we only realise, too late, that he’s led us, and Flynn to an inescapable tragedy.

Echo takes the visual novel, a genre where the only real piece of gameplay is the choices you make and makes you question your ability to even make said choices. It frightens you by making you feel progressively more powerless. And yet, you come back. You all come back eventually. You try again on another route, and another, hoping maybe this time things’ll be different. ...Because just like this town...

My That ‘90s Show Review: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Alright, a few days (and rewatches) in, and I’m finally ready to give my thoughts on That ‘90s Show - a show I waited on for two years (but really, more like 17 years). Buckle in for a looooong essay, lol.

I give That ‘90s Show a solid 4 out of 5 stars. I’ll do my best to explain my rating below.

The Good

The Eric-and-Donna of it all. Well - this is an Eric & Donna blog above all else, so of course we were watching first and foremost to see our OTP reunited onscreen after 15 years! And we were not disappointed by what we found. 💗😭

Eric and Donna are happily married in 1995, and navigating the perils of parenting a teenager (shudder). They’re still just as in-love as ever, but now in their mid (late??) 30′s and acting like they’ve been married for 150 years. I guess they have been together since they were 4 🤣.

One thing I think the show really got right is Eric-and-Donna-as-parents. That went exactly as I could’ve predicted. Eric is Kitty to his daughter, well-intentioned but overbearing - and Donna sets boundaries with Leia (like her parents didn’t with her) but is also there to reel Eric in and to remind him of the important stuff: to trust their kid, to let her have her own experiences, to help teach her to take (smart!) risks. I adored that we got to see them “in action” as a parenting team, I loved when Donna went out to check on him and they talked through his fears about Leia growing up and not needing him anymore, I loved seeing how Eric is clearly worried he’s going to become his father (but it’s so clear that he’s so not)... I just loved it all.

Specific shout out to Donna-as-a-mom, which I never knew I needed in my life so much until I saw it! Her running into the Forman’s living room, screaming that she got Leia condoms, jellies, and the uglies underwear she could find... 🤣 Hysterical, and also felt so true to character. That’s exactly how I saw Donna parenting a teenager.

The Red-and-Kitty of it all. Red and Kitty are a joy. Seeing them as grandparents - and as a still-happy couple, enjoying their retirement (or not-so-retirement?) -was the other high point of the series for me.

Red and Kitty are still happy and in love. I never doubted they would be, but it was just heartwarming to see. I also loved their interactions with other characters, like seeing Bob and Fez come back (!!) and the introduction of Sherri, who very much feels like pseudo-daughter for them.

Red as a grandparent was everything I wanted it to be. Him calling Leia “kiddo” - my heart 💗. We kind of got glimpses that he was excited to become a grandparent on the show - like Eric and Donna’s pregnancy scare in season 6 - and I think now we see why. Red knows being a grandpa is where it’s at! He’s done with all the hard parts of being a father, being the ‘bad cop’, and just gets to enjoy and be the fun one! I am picturing him doing this Leia’s whole life lmao... like Eric and Donna sent her over for an afternoon and she comes home hopped up on sugar and Red’s like, “Sorry, she wanted it all and I couldn’t say no. Oh, getting her to bed tonight? I don’t know, not my problem!” Or like, he always gets her the noisiest gifts for Christmas. Kitty as a grandparent was also very sweet - her and Leia making up the pasta names is what immediately comes to mind 😂. Their “good cop” and “bad cop” dynamic has definitely shifted with the grandkid, and I could have predicted that (but it is fun to see!!).

Leia Forman. I adore Leia. I saw someone online say she’s the rare case of two great characters not having a super annoying kid, and I thought yep, spot on. Reboots are always a tricky beast, casting the kid of two beloved characters even more so, but this one worked out.

Leia is funny, endearing, smart, and I see a lot of shades of both Eric and Donna in her but also plenty that sets her apart as her own character. Her storyline about being a coddled, sheltered kid looking to break free and have some adventure worked for me, and I would love to get the chance to see how Leia continues to evolve as she gets older and spends more summers in Point Place.

Gwen and Leia, aka Geia. This is my ship! I really love Gwen and Leia together, and want them to fall in love (cackles in *fanfic author*). But I want it to be a slow-burn, where they realize they’ve fallen for each other, ‘accidentally’, over time. Falling for your best friend... who lives next door... hmmm, wonder why I like this pairing so much...? 😉🤣🥰

Pure nostalgia. The basement. The Hub. The Vista Cruiser. Fenton. Leo. I wanted nostalgia, dammit, and the show delivered. I will even (tentatively) put a few ‘90s references in this column, like hearing ‘Shoop’, ‘I’ll Make Love to You’, and ‘You Outta Know’ and seeing a few other 90s things that reminded me of my childhood, like Free Willy and snap bracelets.

The humor. I went into the show with low expectations, specifically in this department. I was worried the humor would feel ‘off’, or would feel cheesy, or just not funny to me. There were definitely a few jokes that didn’t land (aren’t there always?), but over all I am happy to put the show’s humor in the ‘win’ column! I laughed out loud - a lot. I could tell that the same writers/showrunners were involved - it felt like similar humor from the original series. I think I enjoyed so much partly because I just love these characters, but many of the new characters had me in stitches too. Ozzie and Sherri in particular.

Sherri. Speaking of Sherri, she was my favorite of the new characters. Obvious Laurie stand-in is obvious, and that’s sad/unfortunate, but once I can move beyond that I really enjoyed her. I liked that she was a well-meaning mom but she definitely needs Red and Kitty’s support and guidance - I look forward to seeing how their relationship will develop. I even thought Sherri’s storyline with Fez was funny. It leaves the door open for Wilmer to return.

The references back to the OG show. The split-screen moments. The extended 90210 daydream/fantasy sequence. The Circle. The screen change sequences (the one with Kitty and Leia in the beanie hats is my favorite!)

The Bad

The 10-episode format. To me the most glaring issue was the 10-episode format, which rendered the season far too short to develop any of the characters or plot-lines they’d set up to satisfaction. Now, in fairness, maybe this is just the order they got for season 1. If they are successful, perhaps a longer order can be made for season 2. But also - maybe not. A lot of Netflix shows are consistently 10-episodes only these days.

But That ‘90s Show had less than half the episodes That ‘70s Show had in its first season to develop character and interesting conflict - and it shows. I like where they were going with everything, but storylines often felt rushed or like a lot of jumping around had happened from one episode to the next (For instance, I thought the Leia-and-Jay dating story went really fast. One minute they were all will-they-won’t-they, Leia’s never kissed a boy, and then BAM they’re together, calling each other babe, and she’s sneaking him up into her room for make-out sessions. Whoa!). The characters felt underdeveloped, too, or like we only knew one thing about them - because we didn’t have time to learn more.

So I know this is unlikely to change, but my biggest gripe is that there wasn’t enough runtime. You have an interesting premise here, you’ve sucked me in. Now properly develop it.

The focus on romantic relationships. Related, the focus on Leia’s romantic relationships was not my favorite aspect. I actually liked how they started the thing with her and Jay - Jay’s a playboy, but he’s not being one with her. They should’ve developed that out through all ten episodes, and had him just give her her first kiss in like, episode 9 or 10. The twist with Nate at the end is kind of interesting and could still happen (but as it is, it comes out of left field... which, now that I think about it, is how Leia felt about it too, I guess).

Regardless, I am neither team-Jay or team-Nate. I didn’t think either couple like, blew me away with their chemistry (although I don’t think we’re meant to feel that way yet, as viewers). My favorite parts of the season were seeing Leia’s friendships blossom, with Gwen and with Ozzie mostly. I’d have liked this season to be more focused on that - and maybe she stumbles into her first kiss along the way by the end of the season, anyway, and there’s still a romantic cliff-hanger.

The timeline inconsistencies (and others). There were several - the most notable being the timeline around Jackie-Kelso getting back together and Jay’s existence, and Eric’s age (38? He was born in 1960 so he and Donna would be 35 in 1995) - and while I am disappointed, I am not surprised.

These are the same showrunners who gave us 3 different birthdays for Eric during the run of the show. The same people who gave us 3 different stories about how/when Eric and Donna met for the first time. The same people who gave Donna 2 sisters and then - poof - magically wrote them off (including in That ‘90s Show lol - “There’s only one girl in the world with Bob as her dad, and Eric had to pick her!”). The same showrunners who had Hyde turn 18 two seasons before Eric. The same - you know what, I’m going to stop myself. The point is, this shit is nothing new. That ‘70s Show fans are used to setting their non-sensical mistakes aside and enjoying the show anyway. Their inattention to detail officially goes in the ‘Bad’ column, though. It’s frustrating.

Jackie and Kelso endgame. Well, this ended up being exactly as it was leaked to be, and Jackie and Kelso were on their second remarriage. I do not mind Jackie and Kelso together and do frankly find it realistic, but this isn’t the happiest ending for Ms. Jackie Burkhart. I thought their scene was pretty funny (we did get a “Damn, Jackie!”), albeit brief, but I had higher hopes for the state of their relationship based on some recent promo materials. I also wished we’d seen (1) Jackie, Kelso and Jay interact as a family, (2) Learned what Jackie and Kelso do for a living/a little bit of backstory as to how they ended up back in Point Place.

No on-screen character reunion. I am bummed that Eric and Donna didn’t interact with the Kelso’s - or with Fez! (I guess Donna did, briefly) Seeing this picture makes me want to see it so, so badly in season 2! I think we’re all curious as to what Eric and Donna’s relationship is like with Jackie and Kelso these days.

The Ugly

Hyde’s absence. I think any long-time fan of the show felt Hyde’s absence, and wondered about the character’s ending. The character’s ending is: totally open-ended, since he was not mentioned at all. Although it was painful to feel his absence, I preferred this to giving him an ending like prison or death, which would have felt like a fuck you to the actor but not fair to the character of Steven Hyde. Mostly because it allows us to fill in our own ending for him. I’m going to say that he finally moved to New York, and he’s happy out there. He keeps in contact with Eric and Donna still. 😊

A few side-notes: One, I have a feeling most of the OG cast actually supports Danny Masterson, so... yeah. Do with that sinking feeling in your heart what you will. But I doubt they will write him off in a mean way for that reason.

Two, I think they were in between a rock and a hard place with this. Honestly, if they’d written Hyde in, in any way, I’d feel squicky about it. Even an off-screen mention. But long-live the fan fiction, am I right?? I’ve already started to see some popping up 👀

Kitty’s moment. Kitty had a moment where I clapped my hand over my mouth (even though I literally knew it was coming), and that was when she called Leia, “That lying little bitch,” when Ozzie told her they were at a rave. It was very shocking, and very un-Kitty-like. Did not like.

(That said, I am not one who uses labels like out-of-character in a context like this. It’s not my character - it’s Debra Jo’s and the showrunners’. It’s a part of her character I didn’t like. And that’s okay. She was in a moment of huge stress, probably suddenly worried sick about her granddaughter. I have certainly had bad reactions to stress, too. As my girl Brene Brown says, “People get scary when they’re scared.”)

Overview

So, I mean... I have largely good things to say about That ‘90s Show, and it was a tall order man, because That ‘70s Show is my baby. And ain’t nobody finna touch my baby!!!

Was it perfect? No. Some of the little things were off, but it felt like overall, the big things were on. And that’s what’s important. I also feel invested enough in the new kids (definitely in Leia), and I think they have a lot of different directions they can take the rest of the series. So 4 out of 5 stars, and when can I expect a season 2 announcement, Netflix??? 😆

'cause i don't even know, for instance, which girls besides angie and najuma are li's, so if you allow me, i'll just rate everybody lol

i think i'm just gonna do it alphabetically to make it easier.

angie. hot, cute, great tattoos. she reminds me of the hot girls i wished were li's on the 'choices' app. also i like her pose but she gets a boot for the hair. it's not great, i don't care for it. 9/10

bruno. this might be the biggest meh for me... hate the hair, HATE IT. what happened?? what went wrong? why did they make his face match the size of his neck? the face is not as generic looking, but it's not great either. the outfits are... gutted. oh my god, they're bad! solid 5/10.

cora. SUPER CUTE. i love the buzz cut, the hair color, her face is just absolutely adorable, cute style. she's hopefully an li?? 'cause if she wasn't y'all were robbed. a boot for the star on the hair (i don't really like buzz shapes on hair). 9/10.

dylan. rotted. gutted. beast. down the drain. most generic looking bitch in this entire cast, BUT IN A BAD WAY. weird ass legs for an athlete, awful face, looks like the type who says "you're just a lesbian because you hadn't had good dick". MANSPLAINING KING. HATE THAT FACE specifically, what a waste of torso design. and i HATE that smirk. gross. solid -3/10. i can't stress this enough, I HATE HIS DESIGN SO MUCH. all of it.

hazeem. HOT!!!!! so fucking handsome, hello??? and i know he's not an li and that was a d-i-s-s-e-r-v-i-c-e. mustache could've been trimmed on the sides but i still think he's hella attractive. i don't mind body hair, and his looks actually good. a boot for the mustache but he was gonna be a 11/10, so 10/10.

james. cute, handsome, good body, but he doesn't make my panties twist you know? i think it's because he looks kinda boring. granted i've never seen any scenes featuring him, so i might be wrong, but he just looks like he would recite poetry and talk about books on the first date. i hate that, it's so tedious. but i love guys with long hair, no matter what texture it is and the bun does it for me. 9/10. hate the glasses and the shorts though.

juliet. NO. she reminds me of the mexican actresses that played villains on telenovelas when i was growing up. BIG SORAYA ENERGY, holy shit. love the eyes, but everything else... it's a no from me dog. hate the diaper she's wearing as a bikini bottom. don't like her, she's not cute. 3/10 and i'm being generous. she looks like she would say she's 40 and people would be like "you don't look 40" but lowkey she's supposed to be 40, you know?

kelly. quirky, cute, looks like would be fun to hang out, probably really flirty. the lip bite is the most they've ever done for a character on any of these ads and it looks good. 10/10.

kobi. great body, good face, but those trunks were a disservice. he looks like the type who would mansplain though, there's definitely an energy there. personally i don't think the "i'm a confident and dynamic guy" is attractive at all. some girls get wet by listening to them, i'm yawning, and he gives me that energy. 8/10.

lexi. i don't see what you guys are talking about. she looks fine but she's not out of this world. the body is ten times hotter with someone else's face. she looks like the lip injections went a bit too far. wouldn't give more than a 6/10.

najuma. SEE, NOW WE'RE TALKING. thicccc, gorgeous face, gorgeous body, gorgeous hair, amazing style. those eyes???? MA'AM, SPARE THAT HAND IN MARRIAGE. truthfully the hottest person in the entire cast and i haven't seen the others yet. 12/10.

oliver. YEP, HE DOES IT FOR ME. beautiful face, good body, hate the tattoos, he gets a boot for that, but he seems like the type of guy who talks to you all night and falls asleep on your lap after sharing stories and laughing about nothing. i love the vibe. he also strikes me as the type who can get a little shy. 11/10.

thabi. gorgeous face, cute style, cute hair, cute glasses, lovely energy. i personally think she's the type to like... laugh timidly about things and that's what i like. i just like how bashful and adorable she looks. she really does it for me too. 10/10.

tiffany. um... i don't know... something's off about them. i think it's the head? or the head-to-the-body position? something is definitely off. i do think she's cute though, and the body is a 10/10 for me. she gets a boot for the wonky design but she's gorgeous! 10/10.

tom. very meh. face is generic looking, and he has no lashes??? it's like they said "let's give him a strong jaw to make him look masculine" and it just looks... wrong. hate that hair, it's not the best let's be honest. the body just doesn't go with the face... the design is not designing, there's a disconnection for sure. i don't like it. also, not that it's bad, but he looks like he has a mommy kink, which added 2 points for him lol 5/10.

valentina. see now that's a bombshell! holy shit. great pose, hot. hair on point, face? amazing. love this one but she gets a boot for the tattoo. also, she does look like a dom/top and that energy makes anyone look ten times hotter, and she's already there. 10/10.

will. my-whole-damn-type! oh my god, long hair on guys is a different level. the tattoos though, are such a BOOT. i hate all of them. this is definitely the only character we can all agree it would be a downgrade if he got another tattoo. hair, face, body, it all does it for me. will is gorgeous and it's not even a discussion, but he gets two boots for the tattoos. 10/10. he was supposed to be a 12.

youcef. hate the hair shape, hair color... go back to party city where you belong. hate the outfits, hate the lips, hate the jaw. oh my god, what did they do to this boy?? body? 10/10, but what the fuck is this face??? why does he look so... weird?? he looks in pain when smiling, i- 3/10 and i'm being super generous. you know i am.

and can i talk about something else for a second? WHO THE FUCK DECIDED ON THEIR OUTFITS???

they're horrible! with the exception of will's night outfit, thabi's and najuma's, i don't think there was anybody else's i was into. the clothes are NOT IT.

valentina's dress was a trip to the gyno. girl... you move one inch i can measure your uterus. i also hate angie's... that fabric? so shiny, and in a very bad way. and i hate the sleeves. juliet's... the diaper? the blue dress?? i don't even... i don't... i-

moving on.

cora's blue something is fine but it's not gagworthy. i prefer the neon pieces and i hate neon. she just pulls it off really well and the cut is super cute. i love it.

now...

CAN WE JUST BURN EVERY OUTFIT BRUNO HAS EVER WORN IN THIS SEASON. GIRL, NO. THOSE SHIRTS ARE SO UGLY! just 'cause you're a comedian... dude, tell me the jokes, don't wear them.

youcef's too. what the fuck was that suit??? why are you wearing a bow tie on a vacation? what is... i don't... i- and again, go back to party city where you belong. you look like you borrowed sam winchester's white wig from the last episode of supernatural and gave it a cut yourself. get kobi here, ASAP, it's an emergency.

don't get me started on tom's. it's so corny to wear something that's not... occasion appropriate. that makes the entire outfit misplaced and why the fuck do you have a handkerchief in your pocket? jacket and sneakers, how very ellen degeneres of you. HATE HIS OUTFIT.

dylan can rot in hell. he's the most basic looking motherfucker and i bet he thinks he's the last vibrator on the shelf. BET. white shirt and jeans? GROUNDBREAKING.

kobi's is fine, not much going on but i kinda prefer that over whatever was going on with the others'.

james' i like because it's pink and pink on dark complexion is UNDERRATED. personally i think it took TOO LONG for a dude to wear it. *thinks of rahim and bobby in blush pink*

i just don't think i missed out on much by not playing this season.

the islanders... appearance alone, because i haven't played any episodes, those are my opinions. i remember being so TORN when i first started season 2. gary, rahim, noah and bobby WERE DOING IT FOR ME, you know?

when lucas and henrik came along, same! the only people that didn't cause any stir with me were rocco, jakub, felix and elijah, but the others?? HOLY SHIT. i had to play on different accounts, i just had to.

this art style is not it. what was wrong with s2's?

also, it does look like multiple artists, from different backgrounds, worked on this season's characters and it absolutely shows. some of them look 2d, some 3d. some of them have some bounce to their hair, some look like they're wearing a helmet (*clears throat* YOUCEF AND TOM).

god, they didn't make one effort did they? anyway. those are my scores based off appearance alone.

Beast Anon here ^^ Sounds like you're still having a good time with the show so far, I look forward to your thoughts on the rest of the episodes as time passes =p To answer your question... Hmm...hard to pick is an understatement, but, if I had to come up with something here and now I'd say...maybe: 1. Beast - Because he's a perfect example of what I personally like in a tragic character while also having the potential to best anything thrown at him. 2. Jubilee - Because I really liked how they evolved her character over time from the standard fish-out-of-water trope to the mysterious yet likable ward with a massive secret...that secret being she has the hidden ability to literally reset time and space if she dies!...I'm not joking, it's in the comics, it's mind-boggling how it's handled and I love it! xD 3. Wolverine - Because everyone loves Wolverine. 'Nuff said xP As for a favorite villain...erm...maybe Mister Sinister? I'll have to think about that some more, the entire list is subject to change really, but I did really like how they handled Sinister's backstory and how he was handled from that point onwards, even from the start he's a pretty intimidating villain who is 100% antagonistic. While you have villains like Magneto who are more like flawed-anti-heros capable of redemption and lumbering overpowered despots like Apocolypse who go "muhahaha! I am going to step on this basket of puppies! >:D ", Sinister has a sort of balance between the two types that I'm warming towards. I do like the way you write these relationships, and would be happy to read any ideas you put on the page ^^ As for any specific platonic yandere's I'd like to see, well, I suppose it'd be fun to see the dynamic/rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth get explored, I'm honestly fine with anything you decide to put down :D Hope these answered your questions sufficiently, you have a great day as well! Good points, Beast Anon!

#1: Jubilee can do WHAT?! That is... so cool. Like, wow. Talk about a plot twist! And I like how they handle her character, too, at least in the Animated Series (I haven't read about... 99.9% of the comics... So I'm pretty much out of my depth with that stuff, unless I watched a video essay on them or watched a video reading them...). And that would be a pretty interesting plot to explore in a platonic yandere setting, too-

#2 Beast is awesome, he's a scientist, he's a lover of literature, he's friendly, he's fluffy, he's nice- The list goes on, but all in all, yes, he's a good character😊

#3 Yep, one way to sum up how we all feel about Wolverine. I myself don't like most of the comic romances he's been in, and while I'm not much a fan of the love triangle in the Animated Series, he is still the guy who will do his best to protect his kids (and adopted friends or partners). So even if he is a jerk at times, and would scare the cr*p put of most people who met him, he's nice on the inside, so I think that's what draws in a good bit of fans

#4 I see what you mean, now that you point it out. Mr. Sinister had a complicated past, started out good, went kinda nuts due to what he did and was trying to accomplish (and possibly failing, if I remember that part correctly? It's been a while since I watched his backstory episode in the Animated Series). And after all of that, he spends the next several decades, if not what, centuries, traumatizing mutants and experimenting on them. Interesting character, looks like a vampire, and is a threat whenever he gets involved. You have Magneto, who is flawed, but more of an anti-hero with his heart in the right direction, but his actions aren't the right way of going about it, and you have Apocalypse, the guy who would knock ice cream out of your hand (or step on puppies, as you said), who is not negotiable on his evil, and does not care about good or evil, just what he wants and how to make it happen... There are other villains and the like, but these three set the flavors you can expect for the show. (Then you have Sabretooth, and well... the Professor somehow saw something in him, or thought he could reach the guy, and the Professor has been known to actually think some people aren't good at all, I think? So he has that going for him. Not to mention the people at Marvel had at one point thought of having this guy become at least an anti-hero, or at best reformed into a hero... All of this to say, secret flavor unlocked: Unstable psychotic villain who somehow has the chance to become better, but the people writing him in the comics sadly won't stick to it or write him in as much of a person) (I hope this made sense😅)

#5 Aaaaaawwww! I'm so glad you like how I write the platonic yanderes! Trying to keep their personalities and vocal tics isn't always easy, but I try my best! Which doing our best is the best we can all do, no matter what!

#6 Hahaha, yes! I enjoy writing for those two, especially since they do have history, they liked each other at some point, and I can write them as brothers. I know that a lot of the fandom ships them, but... I prefer them platonically. I do ship certain characters, I just don't ship those two that way. Wolverine has had I don't know how many love interests, so the idea he can have a platonic relationship with someone who isn't a teenager or the odd person who died, is rather appealing. And it kinda fits in a way, doesn't it? How to explain these two guys, where one (Sabretooth) knows the past of the other (Wolverine) when even the guy he's obsessed (and protective?) of doesn't know it or him, hates him, and will attack him on sight. Cue at least a hundred years of being obsessive, protective, and a stalker towards this one guy. (I may have brainrotted there for a minute; my apologies, but you hopefully see what I'm trying to say, right?)

Idk if it'll interest anyone but here are where I stand when it comes to shipping rwby characters in JNPR and RWBY. By this I mean me specifically, I don't want or need the fandom to agree with me:

Ruby: I don't really ship her with anyone. I think Penny was the one exception because I do think it's a sweet ship. But outside of that I'm very content with Ruby not having a romance and I'm hoping a bit they don't put her with Oscar because I don't see how that would really develop either of their stories in an interesting or fun way. I think Ozpin being so present also kind of weirds me out when it comes to that potiential romance.

Weiss: Freezerburn is a top ship for me. I'm not big on her and Jaune in canon but I can see how it would be cute in some instances. I will admit Pyrrha/Weiss is also a good relationship in theory but we need more interactions from them. Largely when it comes to shipping her I just give an "alright" shrug but have no strong feelings.

Blake: since my ideal Blake story involves her kind of on a journey of redemption I think the only Blake ship I give time to is Bumbleby. I prefer platonic Blacksun but I can still enjoy its cute qualities. Outside of that similar footing to Weiss where I just nod along.

Yang: I guess she has favorite daughter privileges because she's the one RWBY character I typically enjoy seeing in multiple ships. Blake/Yang? Yep. Weiss/Yang? A favorite. Ren/Yang? Took me some time but I like it. Most ships people bring up for her I enjoy.

Jaune: outside of Arkos I don't have one. I don't mind most fanart I see of White Knight but Arkos is the only Jaune ship I actually am emotionally invested in. I personally view him as the older brother in the group so I don't see most of his interactions as romantic in nature. Plus with the death of Pyrrha I'm a "Let the boy be single and grieve. It's the apocalypse he can date when the world isn't being destroyed" type.

Nora: I think there's potiential for Nora to have good dynamics but she and Ren were so sidelined most of the series that we don't have much canon to work off of in terms of friendships. I enjoy hyper/calm ships so any of them in theory are fun. But Renora is the only Nora ship I've fully considered.

Pyrrha: Arkos is the only one I'm set on. Outside of that Weiss/Pyrrha. When it comes to shipping her in canon I don't have much interest, any interest I would have gets built on my interpretation of her. I think so much of her canon is wrapped around Jaune that it doesn't provide much in the way of fun dynamics to build a romance off of with anyone else.

Ren: Renora is always going to be top tier. Outside of that, as I said before, I do actually like Sunflowyr. It's cute and I really do like the thought of him and Yang becoming surprising best friends. Largely Ren is emotionally closed off though so I don't have any for him.

Bonus, Oscar: my boy is 15 with the soul of a many time dead old man slowly merging into his. Let him be single and figure himself out while getting support from the various adults in his life.

There are few instances of ships in this fandom I legitimately can't stand. A lot of times I either make a face and go "not for me" or just shrug because I don't have strong opinions.

(Modern Tails anon) Considering there's apparently financial troubles going on with IDW, one has to wonder if the comic lives long enough to see that story one day.

Heh, the funny thing is, he could technically do those things too. Maybe not as well, but a kid fox genius running around with a flamethrower he built being alongside Blaze has to invoke some type of interesting imagery. Same with a stealth mission with Rouge.

I figured, especially with Sonic is one the earliest examples of seeing a video game character having a clear personality. (At least those Origins cutscenes added something more upfront; albeit very late for this decades-long series. But something to refer back to nonetheless.)

I think I've seen that somewhere. The most I know of Tails himself in that continuity is that he and other foxes are from some secret zone and he has grown the title of hero in that village through rather clumsy, but well-meaning antics. Albeit through lying at first.

(Yup, AOSTH Tails even turned an entire truck into a mechanical dragon and handled himself while Sonic was frozen in stone. The most SatAM did was that one episode near the end. I still wonder if the plans for season 3 had gone through, would Tails be looked at a bit differently depending on how it went since his role was supposed to expand greatly.)

Hmm, it's going to depend on how these next set of episodes go. Seeing the other Tailses will likely strike a chord in Nine; but that doesn't fully mean villain arc. Existential crisis, maybe. I expect him more to tap into something hidden within him he didn't notice before. (Probably doesn't help that outside of Sonic and Shadow, we don't know the Prime versions of the characters that well; not great if you don't have at least basic knowledge on Sonic. If Tails did show some "Nine" traits during his early days with Sonic; specifically the trusting and friends part, I think there'd be a fairer grasp of why Tails didn't end up like Nine and why Nine is slowly resembling the original Tails. This applies to the other counterparts too, not just his alone.) Heh, never doubt the power of a fandom has when they catch the slightest bit of angst fuel from any character. And missing the nuances that come with grey/neutral characters. (Trust me, I'd love to see Tails let loose some raw, unbridled emotion that could have you think about his morality or sense of justice, but in the right context. Something I don't see Prime fully committing to, whether they DO go through with it.)

Two intelligent scientific minds, separated by different upbringings and how they apply their emotions to their logic, but still learning about how the world works and defy said logic through personal experience. All while seeking approval and praise. Lots of potential there.

There was another Sonic Channel story last year that basically said the same thing about their bond. One being "they have something that goes beyond trust", that "they know what the other needs without having to speak". (Also, their dynamic breaks some the typical tropes you see with 'hero-sidekick'. Like, the latter has the base of operations, not the former. Also, it is not funny and wholesome that Sonic considers this baby fox that attached himself to a younger him the biggest source help he could have ever hope for?)

Honestly I'm not very knowledgeable on how this whole deal works, so I won't say anything on the matter. I wonder if we could get a Sonic webtoon? I know DC comics and Archie both have at least one. Of course, both of them are of questionable quality, but who knows, maybe we'll luck out!

Haha, that's true! Personally I don't really care for him being a kitsune spirit, but I've been thinking of an idea where he replicates their abilities with his tech to make someone else believe he is one.

Yep, Fleetway Tails is from the Nameless Zone which is kind of like old-timey alternative dimension with magic and goblins and stuff. He was kind of loser there, so he moved to Mobius hoping he'd make a name for himself, but he was still a loser there too. But he was too embarrassed and wrote to his family that he became a hero. In the early StC, the writers weren't kind to Tails. He usually just messed things up or got captured (you could kinda understand Sonic's frustration with him, though he could stand to be nicer), and if he did manage to save the day, it was due to sheer luck. He got better though, especially after Sonic got stuck in another dimension. (After he came back, the Freedom Fighters kind of went their separate ways, but S&T often had adventures together as a duo. They both kinda grew up, Tails became more competent and stopped caring as much about impressing people (including Sonic), and Sonic mellowed out and stopped being as harsh on him. They became a better team! I have a soft spot for the stc!Unbreakable Bond, you just kind of have to take into account the specifics of the writing of stc as a whole, I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea.)

(I... have mixed feelings on satam, but mostly I just can't finish watching it. It feels like a drag. Not something I would be watching if it wasn't Sonic-related. Not gonna comment on the quality of it, because there are some other shows I felt similarly about and they're super critically acclaimed, like atla. (If Tails was more prominent I mind have at least been watching for his sake) I promised a friend I would read Archie and I wanted to watch satam first, but it looks like at this point I'll just have to skip to the comics.)

I really want to see different counterparts interacting. I'm kind of with Shadow on this situation, try as I may I don't really see them as separate people, I'm more interested in what they could say about the Prime versions of the characters. But it would be more effective if we spent more time with the Prime versions in the first place. I'm hoping for more flashbacks tbh. (Plus I just love how the og models for the characters look without the Shatterverse clothes)

Oh yeah I remember that one! Man I love how Sonic Channel hypes up their bond. I hope we'll get to see more of this in the next games. Sonic really lucked out (and so did Tails of course!)

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story? It was a request! From my tumblr buddy @arsonyard. I knew I wanted to write some ghoul a/b/o at some point, I didn't have a specific pairing in mind, so when their request came in for MtnDew a/b/o I was like, yep, done, got it, this is the pairing now haha.

11: What do you like best about this fic? Two things: 1. How I developed my personal headcanons for the heat / rut cycles for all the ghouls, how this fic is gonna lay down a baseline for me to work off of for future a/b/o AU fics. It's like I did all the ground work now and I created myself a sandbox to play within next time! 2. That I get to share my love for primal play / predator & prey dynamics. Primal is a kink very near and dear to my heart so I'm thrilled I get to share this important piece of my kink universe with you all and have people who are enthusiastic about reading it!

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading? Alright, you get some exclusive info anon! The title of the fic is Make my Blood Rush (Slow Down), shortened to Blood Rush, and that line comes from the song Eternal Blue by Spiritbox. So absolutely go take a listen to that. I don't listen to music while I write because I have a hard time processing multiple sounds at once, and if there's music going on while I hear character dialogue in my head, I'll lose my words. So I write to the sound of my keyboard and my cats hahaha. I do, however, take music / signing / dancing-around-the-appartment breaks while I write to get some energy out, and during those, I was running the new Drag Talk EP, Dogs on repeat. These four songs have been on non-stop since they got released last week.

I decided to write a bit about my recent NaNoWriMo project, in the form of an imaginary Q&A, for my own amusement (and hopefully yours).

What did you write during NaNoWriMo, Nevanna?

My project (which is ongoing, since I reached neither a conclusion nor the 50,000-word goal) was a multi-chapter fanfic for The Magnus Archives, whose working title is Eye to Eye, but I’ve been referring to it as the Hypnotists AU, after the book series on which it’s based.

Those are kids’ books. Are you aging down the characters?

Some of them! The original Archives crew, among others, will be portrayed as teenagers – which is a bit older than Gordon Korman’s protagonists, but I’m taking creative license in a number of areas, including this one.

For the sake of teenage romance?

Yep. And also teenage super-powers angst.

How closely does your fic follow Korman’s plotting?

It’s difficult to say for sure at the first-draft stage, but I plan to echo at least a few of the plot beats – primarily the ones that I liked, which is by no means all of them. More on that in a moment.

Do the Fear Entities (and their cults) exist in this world?

Not as such, no. This is a “characters from Fandom A, meet worldbuilding of Fandom B” fusion. That said, I will hopefully have the opportunity to bring in some familiar faces from TMA and incorporate aspects of their signature imagery and methods.

Do readers need to have read the Hypnotists trilogy to understand your fic?

I am hoping that they will not! I’m writing this for TMA fans, first and foremost, since I know a lot more of them. However, if my fic prompts some of those fans to read the books, I’d be interested to hear what you think of them.

So, you’d recommend the books to people who haven’t read them?

Yes and no. A lot of the world-building and plotting choices actually bothered or just annoyed me: specifically, the use of the “here is how many pivotal historical events and achievements were the result of supernatural meddling” trope, and the repeated emphasis on the protagonist’s Special Bloodlines in particular. Also, some of the humor is mean-spirited (an overweight side character is the butt of several jokes), and I am hopelessly cynical about the political conspiracy that provides the main conflict in the first volume. However, I was already an adult when these books were published, and I probably wouldn’t have noticed some of these things when I was in their target demographic.

All of that said, despite my feelings about that main conflict, a lot of the smaller, personal struggles and relationships are very well-realized. No matter your age, if you enjoy the “school for psychic kids” trope, if you enjoy stories about the terrifying implications of mind control (both for the people who can use it and the people who are more or less helpless against it), or if you enjoy manipulative, charming mentor characters, you will probably find something to like about the series. I enjoy all three, so part of the inspiration for my project was the “these storytelling choices are really cool, how would they work in a different story?” reaction that I had upon rereading the books. A fusion with yet another intellectual property isn’t the only answer to this question, of course, but it’s where I landed.

Which pairings do you plan to include?

At the moment, I plan to devote some attention to at least three canon pairings (including one that, when I started contemplating this version of their dynamic, surprised me with how invested I was!), and I’m contemplating one or two that arose from popular fan interpretation. All relationships will be appropriately tagged in the AO3 metadata, of course.

So you plan on posting this?

Yes, though I don’t have a clear timeline for when I will be sharing it. I hope that I’ve interested some people enough that they’ll give it a look when I finally do!

Uh, I think I remember this bit from my AUgust fic. There was part where Andres says in an interview that, "Martin Berrote, my boyfriend who is an..." and I left it at that!

It was a last minute addition and I didn't know whether to make Martin an engineer or architect. I just left it and posted it like that.

11. what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

I think I have become bolder with my tropes. At first, I used to only write fluff and humor but as time passed, I tried and wrote explicit smut and experimented with angst in some of my fics (they don't mostly work out well). I also tried out a dark fic for @nharidy gift fic.

Also, I only used to write one shots with short lengths but now, I am not shying away from the larger word count or fics with multiple chapters.

Overall, I think I have learnt to better explore the emotions of my characters.

23. any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?

More like, I sometimes actually take inspiration from my real life to put it in my fics. I'll give you a few examples :

In my AUgust fic, Martin's bedroom is partially inspired by the layout of my own bedroom.

The first snippet of Chasing Butterflies was an actual incident that happened in my 9th grade. I was Denver. 😂

In, The Adventures of a Petty Bitch and His vicious Furball, the dynamic between Martin and Milan is inspired by my own dynamic with my dog. (I casted my dog as Milan! 🥰)

The 4th snippet of Cupid's Strike was written when I was waiting for a takeaway at a restaurant that took too long and the guests at my home had arrived! I was finding and failing to come up with ideas for Jakov's part when my mom called up to announce the arrival of the guests. That's when I came up with THIS specific idea.

The second dream of What the Mind Conjures at Night was an actual dream I had back in August. It was so funny I woke up chuckling.

What’s your OTP for your Muse(s)?

I really don't know if I have an OTP with Alice. I've shipped her with a few characters back in the day when I mostly RPed her on twitter. One of my favorites was her with Hatter from syfy's Alice.

What are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping?

The biggest is probably angst and fluff. Alice is very reserved when it comes to romance but if someone can crack her then she is very devoted and loving. She is also very protective over those she cares about. Her ptsd and demisexuality make it hard for her to find any romantic prospects.

However she is always looking for friendships and other platonic relationships

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

Probably no bigger than 5-10 years. 10 years would be pushing it. I personally don't get super uncomfortable with age gaps as long as both parties are over 21 and it's completely consensual. When the older party knew the younger when they were under 18 that's when I get uncomfortable.

Alice's personal preference probably won't go past 10 years older than her and she definitely wouldn't involve herself with anyone 18 or younger. She is 21 in all of my verses now.

Are you selective when shipping?

With Alice, I am probably more selective than any of my other muses. I ship chemistry but I am always open to exploring romance with her if she and the other person get along really well.

How far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?

With Alice I prefer to do a fade to black but will sometimes put it under a read more. It really just depends. But really once it goes past making out and the fourplay starts then I try to stick it under a read more or fade to black.

I don't do a whole lot of smut with Alice just because she rarely gets herself involves in such relationships.

Who are other muses you ship your muse with?

There has been a few that I would have threads with and think 'oh this would be cute if things went this direction' without anything going in a romantic direction. I don't want anyone to think that I'm throwing Alice at their muse intending to ship. But sometimes if I know the character then I have moments where I think them and Alice would be a cute couple.

But really no specific muse comes to mind at the moment

Does one have to ask to ship with you?,

You can ask if you like! Or we can just rp it out in a thread and build that chemistry. Either works for me!

How often do you like to ship?

I would love to have more ships with Alice! But like I said, it can be hard for her. It takes a lot of trust for her to open up in such a way. But I do really want my girl to fall in love.

Like I said earlier, I am also always wanting more platonic and familial ships with her as well!

Are you multiship?

Yep!

Are you ship obsessed or ship more-or-less?

Probably ship more or less with her? I like to focus on many different dynamics with Alice and shipping isn't my priority.

What is your favorite ship in your current fandom?

Sadly there really aren't a lot of ships in my fandom. To be fair most of the characters opposite of Alice are in her head. I've seen a lot of fan ships with Alice and Carpenter or Alice and the Cheshire cat in human form. But for me personally, all of the Wonderland occupants are like Alice's children more or less. They are just her companions. She doesn't see any of them in a romantic light.

The only other ship I ever see is Alice and Bumby and that one is disgusting and has no place on my blog.

Finally, how does one ship with you?

Build up that chemistry in some threads, send in memes with a more shippy tone or if anything you can just ask if I can see anything going anywhere with our muses!
