Hey, saw your reblog on a post about writing, and since I had a creative block that lasted about a decade and kept me from writing or drawing, it resonated with me. A lot of things happened to finally get me out of that block, including changing meds, but a big one was just that stupid Comic Sans trick. (And this coming from someone who also loves writing in notebooks!)

Have you heard of it? You just write in Comic Sans, and it makes it impossible to take your writing seriously, so all the dread of the expectation of truly ~writing~ is lifted from you. I amplify the effect by using Notepad++ (no fancy formatting to distract me), using a theme with candy colors (even harder to take seriously), and keeping the window small (just a little things to ramble and jot notes in, not a big important writing document, goodness no, but if some writing should *happen* to happen...).

I also just don't worry about writing a story linearly. I write scenes as they pop into my head, however short, and then I stitch them together later.

As it is, my story still isn't finished (in part because it's the script for an animated series I'm working through animating at the moment)... But, counting all the AU tangents, I've gotten a Moby Dick length corpus out of it and counting, and I've had a hell of a lot of fun. Writing is back to being fun!! And that's all I could have hoped for.

Hey-o! I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. I drift from one thing to another sometimes and I was hyperfocused on Minecraft for a bit there!

I've heard of the Comic Sans trick, but haven't yet tried it. I tend to use Arial myself, since that's the Google Drive default. Might try it on my next story attempt, though, since I'm moving back to Word and pulling my writing off of Drive. (I want to keep my own backups and not worry about what's synced where.)

I also snagged an app on Steam called Nimble Writer that I want to try out. It apparently has some neat features to help with focus, but I haven't really played with it yet beyond booting it up and checking out the UI.

In terms of trying to write, I often find myself in brainstorming documents where I half-outline, half-brainstorm ideas. I get a lot of character backstory by doing that, and a lot of them have turned into full-blown worldbuilding with magic systems and descriptions of fantasy races, geography, weaponry, and so on. So it's not like I don't write anything, but it's not the prose I'd really like to be writing.

There are some other factors. My sibling is living with me. they're only 22, and they're still figuring things out, but there are also a lot of things they could be doing to be a better roommate. I prefer living alone and I knew I would only be able to tolerate them living with me for a little while, but this has gone far beyond that. I won't write that novel in this post, though. Suffice it to say I'm looking for my own place, and I know my creative productivity will vastly improve once I have a space where I can actually decompress after work.

On the linear writing thing: I used to be a panster. I wrote linearly, but I wrote what was fun. I've never written out of order before, but that has more to do with my ability to keep track of what's happened, and it's easier when I do it chronologically. I think I'll try an out-of-order story just to see if it breaks the block, though. Maybe if I break my own mold, I'll find another shape that fits, to follow the metaphor.

One trick I've been tempted to try is to pick one of my very old fanfictions, from back when I was a wordy teenager who had to describe everything in exacting detail, and copy it all down word-for-word until my writer's brain kicks in and diverges with it. I'm not the same person I used to be, so I'd like to think my old self would drive me just crazy enough to force me into action writing something new. Or maybe the same thing but better. Who knows?

On that last point: You're writing a script?! Am I allowed to ask about it? And animating! I've been wanting to relearn how to draw, but animating seems so daunting! I wish you the best of luck!

Humour and Homicide

The narrative of Lady De Ath’s life can be hard to piece together from what you heard at the party. So, in case you’re curious, then here it is...the full story of the Ad Hominem Murder:

LADY ADMIN DE ATH was the daughter of the De Aths, the family who owned Rumford Hall and all its surrounding land. As their only child, Admin was raised to inherit the fortune. But she didn’t want it.

To get a taste of an ordinary life, she got a job as a critic with the local newspaper. Her column was anonymous, to prevent her parents from finding out. Unimpressed by much and in need of a way to vent her frustrations, she wrote scathing reviews of all she saw. She dismantled performances and plays with such wit and sarcasm that her critiques became the newspaper’s most popular feature. Because of this, two things occurred.

Firstly, her popularity meant that when she discussed with much disgust one RODERICH EDELSTAB and his acting skill, she almost derailed his career. He struggled on, however, eventually becoming a superstar. He used his newfound wealth and fame to discover his anonymous critic’s identity. Realising it was Lady De Ath, he attended her party to tell her just how much he’d succeeded, and just how wrong she was about him. Inside he knew, though, that without her criticism, he’d have never pushed himself to become the actor he is today.

The second occurrence to occur was the acquirement of a particularly special fan: ELVIRA BLOODSCHMIDT. Married to a man who claimed to love her, but spent his nights loving others, Elvira coped by reading the newspaper. It would remind her that there were people out there with lives worse than hers, and thus, she should endure. It was in those newspapers that she found the columns of the anonymous critic, and, as seemingly-mundane things do, they made her realise something important. When something is bad, no matter the severity, one can criticise it, and one can most certainly laugh at it; there is at least some joy to be had in misery. Thankful of these lessons, she wrote to the newspaper.

Elvira’s letters were passed onto Admin, and from there a friendship was born. Both women were trapped in situations they did not want to be in. Together, they decided they would run. They would run, far from Rumford, and be free together. Using the wages Admin had saved up from her job, they ran all the way across the world, and stayed in the hotel of one ALFRED F. BONES. There they stayed for months, their friendship growing stronger, until it became something more. But they were not to live happily ever after. One of them was not to live at all.

Elvira fell ill. Admin, desperate to save her, used all of her funds to pay for treatment, but none worked. Out of money and out of options, Admin stole from Bones’ hotel and returned to Rumford with a deteriorating Elvira to enlist the help of the best doctor she knew: IVAN BRAGINSLAY. He was, at the time, tending to the son of FELICIANO VARGASSASSIN. However, the boy was stable, and so Ivan answered Admin’s call. But there was nothing he could do.

Elvira passed away, and, without Ivan there to monitor him, so did young Charlie Vargassassin. Heartbroken, Admin retreated back to Rumford Hall and accepted her fate. Not long after, she lost her parents, and became the sole owner of her family’s fortune. Still loyal to her parents and regarding Admin with disdain for running off, many of the staff abandoned Rumford, leaving only the faithful YAO HANG to care for it and for Admin.

With Yao too busy and Admin too apathetic, Rumford Hall began to fall to ruin. This angered the locals, especially MATTHEW KILLIAMS, a retired soldier who had worked there in his youth. Others, however, saw it as an opportunity. BARON GILBERT VON MCMURDERY was interested in buying the De Ath’s land from them, and could see that Admin did not truly want it. However, Admin refused his many offers to purchase it from her. Though she didn’t want it, she definitely did not want him to have it.

Admin very rarely left the Hall. On one occasion when she did, a young man named KIKU HONDAGGER attempted to talk to her. A cheeky thing, he poked fun at her hermit-like nature, but failed to impress. Recalling all of her skills as a critic, she verbally destroyed him in front of his classmates, making him an object of ridicule for the rest of his schooling. ARTHUR CORPSELAND, a rather dim boy, was the only one willing to be his friend after the incident.

A few years after Elvira’s death, after Admin inherited her family’s wealth, Lady De Ath began to receive anonymous death threats. She went to the police, but they were of no help to her. So, she came up with her own plan. She began to hold parties, lavish and grand, for all kinds of guests. She became an infamous hostess; everyone wanted to attend her soirees. Knowing this, Admin planned her very last party. She invited everyone she had wronged in her life, everyone who could have reason to want her dead. Days before the party, she went to confession and revealed her sins to the good reverend FRANCIS GUNNEFOY. He tried to convince her not to go through with her plan, but she was determined. He attended the party to try and save her soul, but he was too late.

Admin gave her killer many opportunities to strike. She waited alone in rooms for minutes at a time, and stood at the edge of her balcony to stare up at the stars. Yet she lived. It wasn’t enough. So, as her butler prepared the drinks, she took a chance. She sent Yao away on a fool’s errand, and by the time he returned, the murderer had done what he needed to. Admin took her glass, gathered her guests to raise a toast, and was dead before she finished.

The killer might have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for the meddling ways of Admin’s friends, invited specifically to solve her murder. Though they hadn’t seen her since their school days, they managed to gather clues from her other guests about what her life had been like since. They discovered that she had been involved in an affair with Elvira, and realised that one of the guests was Elvira’s former husband: LUDWIG BLOODSCHMIDT.

Though Ludwig loved Elvira, he could never settle down. He’d hoped that would be enough for her, but it wasn’t. When she ran from him, he was furious. After hearing of her return, he headed to Rumford Hall to take her back and give Admin what he thought she deserved. But he was too late.

After Elvira died, Ludwig tried to move on. But he never could. Not knowing that things could have been different. If Admin hadn’t have seduced her, manipulated her, taken her from him, then she wouldn’t have gotten ill. She would be alive. Perhaps even Admin would be dead. That would be a fine thing indeed.

Ludwig began sending Admin letters. He called himself her anonymous critic. He told her that she should be dead. But it wasn’t enough. She needed to be dead.

And so, when invited to her party, how could he resist? He procured poison, and he waited for his chance. It was almost too easy in the end. Perhaps that should have made him realise that it was all a trap. But he was too angry to be rational; for if he had been rational, he would have realised that Elvira was her own person. She chose to run. He promised himself to her, and then broke that promise. If he hadn’t done that, perhaps she’d still be alive.

But blame is a funny thing. If you work hard enough, you can blame anything on anyone. Alfred F. Bones recognised that. Though Admin’s thievery caused him to lose his business, he did not blame her. He could have blamed her. He could have blamed Elvira for falling ill. He could have blamed himself for letting them stay. But he refused. And he was rewarded.

Always thankful to him for giving herself and Elvira safety, and always regretting stealing from him to delay the inevitable, Admin made Alfred the sole inheritor of her estate. Yao’s loyalty was rewarded with a position on his staff, and Matthew’s help was enlisted to restore the Hall to its former glory. The others helped Alfred to settle into their village, and often visited the Hall. They went not only to see him, but to see Admin’s grave, which lay within the grounds...

How I outline!

Helllloooooo it’s been ages since I promised to do this and I’m SO sorry it’s so late but I finally got around to actually writing this post today so here it is :P @abalonetea and @inkwell-attitude, I think you both wanted to see this! (sorry to everyone else about the long post incoming!) DISCLAIMER: This is just my process, I’m not claiming it’s the best or that everyone should do this or that it works for every project. I don’t do this for short or simple stories, only for novel-length WIPs with complicated facets, but the process *can* be distilled for something less complex.

Step 1: Brain Dumping

At this point, I probably have some semblance of a premise and characters for this idea, and possibly also an endgame idea of where I want to take the story but not middle or clue of how to get from point A to point B. This is where you collect ALL the thoughts. Usually, I do this between phone notes and a document on my laptop for brainstorming, but you can use voice memos or whatever else works. I’ve drawn ideas on my hand in pen during a lifeguarding shift before and just taken pictures of my inked-over arm before I have to jump into the pool again. It happens. In any case, you have ideas.

Step 2: Put it in some semblance of order by using a map

This is the outline I was working on last night for the first book in the Laoche chronicles but it’s so vague at this point that I don’t think spoilers really matter. [end image ID]

The next objective is to put the random ideas in a linear order. I collect all the thoughts into one spot and dump them on the board. I color code, so first I write down all the set plot-points in the approximate order in the black pen, start to finish, and leave space above and below for stuff has to happen in the middle.

Then the characters come in. I generally know backstories so those get dumped around the starting point in green. I figure out what characters are driving the plot and draw arrows between said plot points writing what the character does in the green pen. I include motivations, feelings, alliances, anything that might possibly be important to the plot too.

Then come logistics and filling in - that’s in red. You could also use conspiracy theory string. Where are they in the world? What needs to happen next? Where do I have plot holes? What makes the characters tick? What makes sense to happen next? What needs to happen to get to the end? What worldbuilding needs to get figured out to enable this plot point? Write it ALL down on a separate piece of paper and start brainstorming again. When you’ve got a good connection, add it. You’ll start to notice the board is starting to fill up. It won’t be linear anymore. That’s fine.

Step 3: Flesh it out

This is where it starts getting real. I take everything I have on the whiteboard (which at this point is a disaster) and transfer every plot point, character interaction, motivation, worldbuilding thing, pacing notes, anything about unreliable characters, author notes about who knows what at certain points (both the characters and the reader), plot twists, and anything else from the notes that didn’t make it to the whiteboard and reconstruct the story on a board.

The reason I use sticky notes is because you can move them around, layer them, and space them to create a cohesive narrative. If I need to play with timing, I can do that easily. If I need to connect plot points to characterizations or anything else, I can do that with layering and spacing next to each other. I’m still color coding at this point. I can start slapping on stuff like “which day does this happen on? What kind of transitions do I need?”, chapter divisions, and thematic elements. You’ll notice there are more holes. Fill those in sooner rather than later.

Step 4: Outline Time

I obviously can’t take my carefully made board with me to school so now it’s time to put it into a document. At this point I should preface this with the fact that I really like the 3 act structure, so I start my outline with that before anything else, like so, using headings to make a document outline - that way I can jump around the outline using the outline quickly. Probably a bit extra but it saves a ton of time

Once that’s been filled out, I start putting the information from the board into the outline structure, and I make sure to cover EVERYTHING something like this: (with color-coding)

Chapter #/Title

Day of the narrative: this helps me keep time and iron out the pacing

The objective of the chapter: what does the reader need to learn, what is the one big thing that happens plot-wise

Main Plot Happenings - this goes in red text and details what actually happens in the chapter. For Storge, this is the plotline that follows Luca and the Laine family (when they’re together)

If there are subplots, these go here too in other colors. Orange for villainous cutaways. Purple for anything with the avian city/war subplot

Character arcs: these are green. I bullet point a list and name every major character in this chapter. anything important to their arcs goes here, as well as how I’m writing them. What are the emotions involved? This is normally the longest part because I have a lot of characters

Worldbuilding: What does the reader need to learn about the world from this chapter? This helps me space out the exposition. Details come up on a “need to know” basis, so there’s new worldbuilding in every chapter but no page-long dumps anywhere.

Themes: WHY is this chapter important? How is it contributing to what I want to say with this story?

Any other author notes about unreliable narrators, plot twists, foreshadowing, and what the reader should know at this point in the story. The goal is that you don’t anticipate the twist, but rereading it there’s a “HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT BEFORE” reaction, so this is more for my sake as a storytelling-craft thing.

Any excerpts or dialogue or description that I pre-wrote in the brain-dump phase and liked and think would fit well in this chapter.

Repeat with every chapter until you’re done.

This takes a long time, and I’m always revisiting and reworking that final outline once I’ve finished it but it’s such a huge help to set me on the right path without detouring 565479851321 times because I realized there was a plot hole too late. It’s overly complicated and incredibly intense and in-depth so It’s not for everyone but I like my 30-page long outlines, so here I am :P

Planner: Plotting is mostly something where I just do what feels right so literally every time I sit down to plot something it looks different and sometimes I may not even plot anything out... even though that is not so wise

Pantser: In my first zouis fic (for the @zouisfest) I am pantsing it so literally everything is on a whim, which is now also getting me into a bit of trouble. But the one thing that I am thinking about is that I might throw two of the side characters into a relationship, dunno though. Ohhhh and what was definitely on a whim was doing a threesome with Zayn, Gigi and Liam in Sweet Heart, but I've been liking the thought of those three enough to be thinking about a separate fic for them...

Plantser: I just brain dumb everything that I know into a document or something of the sort.

Tears of Themis : Chapter 1 “Social Snobbery” Part 1

Location- Industrial Warehouse

(Early in the morning, a bustle of movement disturbed the quiet night at a raw chemical warehouse situated in Stellis City’s Industrial Zone. A group of warehouse clerks that should have been on break opened the warehouse doors as they manned robots that lugged barrel after barrel of raw materials which were loaded on carts.)

Man on Comms: “Raven, please report on the investigation progress.”

(The man called Raven moved to hide himself behind storage containers, and adjusted his night-vision goggles, turning on thermal imaging.)

Man on Comms: “Raven, do you copy? Did something happen to you?”

(Raven tapped on his earpiece three times and silenced it. The voice in the comms was effectively cut with it.)

Warehouse Clerk A: “These late night shifts are awful, what sorta business couldn’t we have left for tomorrow morning?”

Warehouse Clerk B: “Shut your trap; the sooner you stop complaining, the faster we can finish our job.”

Warehouse Clerk A: “Speaking of, where did Minister Xu go? He was…”

Warehouse Clerk B: “I told you to shut it! Are you daft?”

(The reprimanded clerk scratched their neck and went quiet. Soon after, the raw materials were loaded into the truck, and they drove away. The opening and closing of the warehouse doors, and even the workers’ small dispute, was semi-audible through Raven’s earpiece. His brows furrowed. He must have picked up something in their conversation… either that, or he was simply dissatisfied with the quality of his gear.)

Raven: “An abnormal delivery…”

(His fingers were like a blur as he typed away on his smart watch, pulling up information on the warehouse owners. Raven pressed his earpiece, and sent his last transmission of the night.)

Raven: “He Yin, Ya Ning, no anomalies detected. Mark Hai O’Sen.”

Without waiting for a confirmation on the other end, Raven turned and stalked away with the stealth of a black leopard, fading into the pitch black tar of the night…

Location- Outside the Law Firm

(It’s Saturday morning, and the CBD building is quiet. Compared to the usual hub hub from workers rushing about on a business day, the silent streets were quite unsettling.)

MC: “Should I go pick up something sweet? It’s been tough working overtime to prepare for the exam, I ought to treat myself! I guess that’s decided!”

(Just as I walked through the office doors, I nearly crashed into a deliveryman as he halted me on the way to the dessert shop.)

Delivery Man: “Excuse me, is uh… mis Law Firm in this building?”

MC: “This is Themis Law Firm, who are you looking for?”

MC: (Themis, the goddess of good council’s, name is difficult to pronounce… Even if Zhai Xing came up with the name with good implications, she seems to have failed to consider whether or not the name would even stick with others.)

Delivery Man: “Does Zuo Ran work here? I have a package under his name.”

MC: “Lawyer Zuo? He’s off today, so he won’t be in. Can I accept the parcel on his behalf? I’m also a lawyer at Themis, I can show you my work badge.”

[Game Instructions: Enter your name]

Delivery Man: “By our policy, it does have to be the intended recipient… but a lawyer is worthy of being trusted; I’ll have to ask you to forward it then.”

MC: “I-it’s heavy! I should put this down before heading to the dessert shop.”

Location- Zuo Ran’s Office

MC: “Huu… what a heavy package. It must be case files again, why can’t they just send it over electronically…”

MC: “Eh? Lawyer Zuo?!”

(I-is this the Zuo Ran I’ve come to know? The chief of Themis, the youngest elite lawyer in the industry, Zuo Ran? He sat, slouched in the leather chair, as the first rays of the morning sun shone through the windows and onto his face, but it did little to erase the fatigue that had settled between his brows. At this moment, he appeared almost as if he were a traveler who had just returned from a perilous and long journey, and had finally put down his heavy bags and had a moment to breathe. But not before the weariness settled in.)

MC: “Lawyer Zuo, you....” Zuo Ran: “MC, it’s you?”

MC: “I- I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were in here, so I entered without knocking…”

(Zuo Ran loosened his tie and sighed. Compared to his usual immaculately pressed suit, seeing him like this was like unlocking something that wasn’t meant to be seen by others.)

Zuo Ran: “It’s alright…”

[Investigate Zuo Ran’s tie]

MC: (Lawyer Zuo changes his tie everyday… This is the same tie that he wore yesterday, it seems like he stayed overnight at the Law Firm.)

I never played the original Homeworld – it didn’t make it over to the Mac and I don’t own a PC – so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this game. I’d just heard lots of positive buzz, and something about a real time strategy game set in outer space. So I wasn’t surprised when that’s exactly what I got. What did surprise me is how exceedingly cool this game is.

But first, a few words about most RTS games in general. In my experience, single player campaigns start off fairly slow and easy and gradually introduce new units as the storyline progresses. Many players finish up the single player campaign and then move on to multiplayer battles over the internet, where experience levels really matter. That is to say, most of us can beat a single player game with enough save points and a couple of tries. You just don’t have to be an especially good player. But multiplayer games tend to fall into two categories. The first, games with a few friends, all of whom know the game basics but aren’t particularly amazing. Then there are those players you frequently run into in online ladder games, opponents who are really great players. They know the ultimate build sequences, unit locations, rush strategies, resource gathering patterns… they have the entire battle plan in their head before they even start a game.

Well, maybe it’s just me but Homeworld 2 seems to require you be the second kind of player – the highly skilled one – to really get into this game. This is clearly not meant for casual gamers, and frankly I felt a bit overwhelmed at times. But even in the midst of a heavy battle where I was getting my butt kicked, I loved this game!

There seems to be a decent story here, which is told in stylized animated cutscenes with top notch voice acting. I confess to not fully understanding the major plot points, mainly because the “Here’s what happened in the last game” intro wasn’t particularly clear. But whatever. Seems like humanity’s survival is in jeopardy and you must lead a ragtag fleet of ships through space on a lonely quest for a planet known as Earth. Oops, that’s Battlestar Galactica. Sorry! Anyway, change the word Earth to Homeland and you’ll be relatively close to this game’s plot.

I know I’m in the minority when I say stories aren’t that important in many games. If I wanted a plot I’d watch a movie or read a book. Gamewise, the only story points I care about are the ones I need to know in order to play the game. But I will admit that these cutscenes were entertaining enough that I actually paid attention to what was going on, which seemed like a lot of “we’re getting our butts handed to us, let’s run before we lose more ships,” followed by a brief, “Whew, we’re safe! Let’s rest. What? Drat! They found us! Quick, fight them so we can run again!”

And that’s fine by me. It kept me focused on the end goal of saving our species from the alien hoards. But in all seriousness, there does seem to be enough of a plot to keep story fans satisfied in between epic battles. And that’s what this game is all about. Epic. Freakin’. Battles!

one week down

I went into inpatient rehab last Monday and figured now would be a good time to give an update. I have a lot to say, but I know not everyone cares deeply about every minute detail, so I'll do a quick highlight reel for those mildly interested.

There's 5 of us, 3 men, 2 women. I'm the youngest by 7 years, and the only one here for just alcohol and weed. We have 6h of mandatory classes/groups every day except weekends when it's 1.5h. The classes are pretty boring and mostly stuff I learned from entry-level CBT/DBT with a few hidden gems of wisdom here and there.

We wake up at 8, DIY breakfast, class for 2.5h, lunch, 1.5h class, break, 1h class, dinner, an optional walk around the block, another 1h class, then bedtime meds and last smoke break at 10pm. No mandatory lights out time but I'm usually exhausted and out by 10:30.

The food sucks, but I'm trying to lose weight so I'm glad it does. I've already lost 6 pounds. On the other hand, I can't remember the last time I ate 2 meals with vegetables for a week straight. I'm smoking 3 times as much as I ever have, because everyone else is a "pack-a-day" smoker and it's been great to take away cravings and also socialize.

I really like the people in the group, and there are 2 staff members who are very well-liked because they're great, 2 that are okay, 2 that are serious hard-asses, and one who's just an outright asshole piece of shit with no business being in the healthcare field.

I'm in a weird kind of mindset where I go back and forth between "I never need to drink again" and "I can probably get drunk once or twice a month, the others here are much worse off than me, so comparatively, my addictions aren't such a big deal". I know that neither of these mindsets are truly healthy. The first because I know there will be days where I will want to drink and I need to plan for that, and the second because I simply cannot do moderation, and my life and problems aren't diminished by the existence of others' problems.

As for poppers, the other thing I'm quitting, I know I can never do them again. Poppers are all-or-nothing. It's impossible to moderate them because I would just do them all day every day, and the few times I've tried to quit them myself, by day 3 I'm digging through garbage to make a DIY bong. Quitting alcohol makes me restless, which I can manage. Quitting poppers makes me so depressed that I get suicidal.

Sorry, that was the "short" version but it got away from me. Now for a bit more detail.

I had to be 5 days sober of alcohol to come in, so it's been nearly 2 full weeks since my last drink, and exactly 2 weeks since the last time I got drunk. I still fantasize about getting sloshed again, but the rational part of my brain is slowly coming back and overriding those thoughts. I haven't had a severe craving to the point where I want to quit or even to the point where I've been super restless, largely because they keep us busy.

Poppers however... on day 2 I was having a fucking breakdown. On the floor sobbing. I went out for a smoke and one of the girls, call her Lisa, was out. I told her how bad I wanted to rip a popper and she said this: "What if you sucked really hard on the cigarette, held it in, then exhaled?" And it fucking worked. Instant headrush. Only about 20% as good as a real popper, but enough that I instantly felt better. Homegirl is a life-saver; I never would've even thought of that because I'd never imagined it would work. Part of doing a popper is smoking a piece of unfiltered cigarette very quickly, so I assumed smoking through a filter wouldn't get the job done.

I miss my kitty, but I'm not homesick like everyone else. They all have kids and 3 are in long-term relationships. 2 are likely going to prison for shit they did while fucked up on opioids and want to show the court that they're working to better themselves and get clean. They have reasons to quit. I... I feel like I really don't.

Yeah, my health has been slowly deteriorating for the past 4-5 years, and I've been very overweight for the past 2-3 years (beer belly), and I spend more money on alcohol than I'd like to admit, but what I spend in a year, Lisa spends on heroin in a weekend. To make things harder for myself, I literally have not had a hangover in 2+ years. I could drink a 26er in 4 hours and wake up absolutely fine.

But I know that my way of life, getting blackout drunk 7 days a week, isn't sustainable. I know that some alcoholics do that for 50+ years, but I'm still pretty young, and I don't want to wake up at age 40 realizing I've pissed away 1/3rd of my life just being drunk.

I guess, when I really boil it down, I want to go back to who I was before I started drinking. I had so much potential to do great things when I graduated high school, and since then it's been a steady decline in my productivity and motivation.

Something that's surprised me about being here is that I've gotten more shit done in the past week than I do most MONTHS. There's a piano that I play for an hour a day, which I haven't done since I was a teenager. There's a treadmill I've used a few times. There's enough down-time for me to work on some embroidery and drawing, but most importantly, I started writing again.

I "finished" my first novel 8 years ago, and I've been trying to rewrite it in its entirety ever since. Draft One was 150,000 words, and Rewrite has been stuck at 25k for almost 2 years now. After a week, it's up to 35k.

And I think I have to attribute this to my lack of drinking. I never realized just how much it affected my motivation before. I used to open the document, force myself to crunch out a paragraph or two and then put it back on the shelf for a few months.

Now, I'm not forcing anything. It's coming to me. I'm inspired. I'm confident. I'm excited.

I've been feeling like I'd lost my spark, my drive to create things, for years now. And it's only been 2 weeks sober and I'm getting that spark back. I guess I do have a reason to quit: I'm not going to accomplish anything, or at least not anything I'm excited about, if I go back to drinking.

Another thing I've noticed is that I'm much more process-oriented. The task of writing always seemed too daunting and stressful because I just want the fucker to be done already. Now, I'm truly enjoying just getting through a scene or chapter. Even just a clever turn of phrase releases the Happy Chemical for me now.

To wrap up this absolute saga of epic length, I want to talk about the people a bit more. It's pretty rare that I get put into a group of people and I genuinely like all of them and none of them annoy me. The last time I was in a classroom with others, we were literally "learning" to identify parts of sentences and doing absolute beginner-level word processing. It was agonizing, because every single person in that class was a fucking idiot and would ask the stupidest questions, take forever to read a paragraph aloud while mispronouncing very common words. I'm not being a know-it-all dick, either. It's objectively true. How do I know? Out of 25, only me and one other person passed the course despite them all attending class regularly.

All that to say, these people are genuinely smart and likeable. John is an absolute encyclopedia on guitars, machinery, cars, and has done pretty much every skilled trade under the sun. He's also had a lot of interesting life experiences. Rick is a yoga guru who brought 12 books ranging from Zen Buddhism to abstract physics, and while I don't believe in 'chakras' and 'healing energies', he doesn't annoy me because he really only talks about it in relation to himself and how it's helped him, which I can respect. Christy is a PSW, and I mention that because she has a way of phrasing things in a wise, educated way, because that's how PSWs get good: they learn to communicate very well. She actually native and lives on a reserve, so she always has something interesting to talk about. Lisa is so well-traveled that when I mentioned I could name all the capitals, she pulled out fucking Tajikistan. She'd never been there. She's also South African and lived during apartheid, and is much more knowledgeable on the subject than myself, and I consider myself pretty well-read on it.

There's no stupid questions that take up half the class to answer, nobody takes 15 minutes to read a paragraph, and everyone is truly putting in the work.

I'm still nervous about coming back home, but my worries get less and less daunting with each passing day.

One week down, 2 more to go. Back at 'er at 9am tomorrow, rain or shine.

Question: I've been trying to write something beyond 5k words and more novel length for awhile, and it's been a bit hard since I don't have any prior experience with something that long. Any tips?

I’m really not a great resource for this, haha, because I’m awfully loosey goosey, at least with my fanfiction. I usually just have an idea, an image in my head, and start writing and see where it goes. That’s how my hurt/comfort fics that I thought would be 20 or 30k keep ending up being over 100k. So if you have a very strong story you need to get out, something that occupies your attention and you feel COMPELLED to tell it, you could just start on the road and see where it takes you. That’s a great way to run into dead ends, though, as well. I have plenty of abandoned fics out there for other fandoms that I’m heartily ashamed of.

Another method is to have an outline. It doesn’t have to be terribly detailed, though that can help. It’s unusual for me to do it that way. In fact, that’s the only time I’ve written a long piece of fiction with such a detailed and well thought-out outline (plus all the comments from my friends, which made me think a lot and made the story better, I’m sure). It worked for me, certainly, but I also didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoy writing my fanfiction. If you’re the kind of person who likes having a detailed plan, you can certainly try it that way. And if you like to collaborate with other people, by all means, discuss the plot with a couple of friends who can help you hash it out and plan.

More often when I feel like I need to plan something out, at least a little bit, I’ll just start freewriting and see if I can hash out a coherent plot that way. Here’s the freewriting I did for Dancing Around a Minefield, which is a much shorter story than you’re thinking of, but I believed it still merited a little bit of thought and planning. After I looked at a list of phobias and picked fear of needles as a good one for Keith and thought about the backstory, I wrote this in about two minutes:

okay the keith phobia fic is gelling together in my mind now. so he and lance are looking for shiro and are going through a random galra lab and the medical equipment seems to be making him nervous but lance assumes it’s because he’s thinking about shiro and whatever awful things the galra are doing to him right now, but then when they, like, knock over a case of needles and keith seriously freaks, that’s where it gets real. and then Lance has to talk him down and calm him down and figure things out.

And that was enough for me to be going on with. I figured out the rest of the story from there while writing it.

I did something similar for Burning Up, Burning Out, a bunch of freewriting to help me bring the plot together in my head, in fact several thousand words worth, but I don’t want to share that because it would be spoilery for the story. I’ve probably done more thinking for this fic than I’ve done in a long, long time. Even for Cycle of the Five Lions, I basically decided on character archetypes for everyone and the bare bones of an epic storyline and just started writing. I mean, I spent a LOT of time thinking about each of the Voltron characters and how they would translate into a fantasy world based on Dungeons & Dragons, and also how the pantheon I made with RL friends ten years ago would inform that world, and I wrote down my five volume titles on a sticky note. Seriously. “The Storyteller and the Thief,” “The Godsent Wanderer,” “The Broken Soldier,” “The Boy Made of FIre,” and “The Legendary Defender.” That was my outline. (Plus the beginning of some character profiles with backstories.) And then I just started writing.

But really, it makes sense to write that story that way, I think. When I play DnD, I spend a lot of time thinking about my character and my party members and how we’ll mesh together and our backstories, and then we just get into it. Even when I DM, I usually only have a vague idea of what’s going to happen, and then I just present situations and let the characters deal with them. So I’m basically writing the story like a DnD campaign that I’m very loosely DMing. I put the Voltron crew in my world and I’m letting them run around. At the end of writing The Godsent Wanderer, I spent some time cogitating on how the shape of the rest of the story will look, but I still didn’t write an outline. I have ideas, I have character interactions I want to happen, I have scenes, but I don’t have plot. I’ll discover that as I go. It’s been working so far.

So yeah. There are some ideas. Just start writing, have a detailed outline, or something in between. Different methods work for different kinds of stories, at least for me. You’ll probably need to do some experimenting to find out what works for you. Good luck! Have fun with it, though, that’s the most important thing.
