Sonic Twitter and TikTok Takeover 2023 Masterpost
Guess what? I saved every response to the takeover like I did last year, and here they all are, with a bonus.

Sonic: Let’s see. This next question is from ‘the dog is very cool’. Interesting, uh, username, there, but, I’m happy for you. They ask, “Can I borrow a couple rings? I wanna buy a bag of funions.”

Disability pride request? Two characters of your choice hanging out, maybe one using two forearm crutches and one using two canes. They can be friends or partners - I just generally love seeing disabled characters interactng with one another!
How about three disabled characters?
Once upon a time @camille-lachenille sent me a prompt about Míriel having Ehler-Danlos Syndrome. I had already sketched a disabled Celegorm with EDS in mind and, thinking about how it's genetic, had an epiphany about Celebrimbor (and the meaning of his name) and I drew him as well. So I wrote a fic about all three of them dealing with chronic pain, but I still hadn't drawn Míriel. That oversight is now fixed!

Disabled Tolkien characters series

More ramblings about disability aids that devolved into bullet-point headcanons under the cut. ID and transcription at the end, but they're also in alt text.
[CW: this is all fairly light but discussion of death and trauma and you know, everything that comes with these three.]
I do not know how to make comics. I'm sure that's very obvious but, you know, learning new things and all that. One thing I learned was that my usual style of rendering does not work with it as well so I rendered them entirely twice.
It was meant to be day 21 and 22 of my October challenge, because surely I can draw and colour a full page in a day (spoilers: no). In the end it was a combined 15 hours of work over 3 and a half days because I made it as complicated as I possibly could 😭 Still, I had fun and learned a lot.
Note: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a connective tissue disorder, affecting basically how your cells are glued together. There are a lot of different symptoms (and different types of EDS) but a frequent one is joint pain and hypermobility, and it's at least partly inherited.
Míriel:
Red was Míriel's colour first. She's not into gaudy things and rarely wears vivid colours, but almost always something red. She barely wears any jewellery since reembodiment, mostly for sensory reason (She is very autistic. That's something she gave Fëanor, Curufin, Caranthir, Ambarussa and Celebrimbor, at least.)
She died of post-partum (and general) depression and energy depletion from childbirth or something, but the chronic illness that was taking all of her energy and keeping her from her craft certainly didn't help.
Also pregnancy was horribly rough on her, partly because EDS can be affected by hormonal changes.
She's actually been better since reembodiment, because she has better accommodations (Finwë did his best but he was very lost) and also a Vala on hand who makes her very good painkilling tea.
She wears knitted compression gloves that she designed to help with hand pains.
Her wheelchair is of Noldor make, but I'm sure Celebrimbor will have suggestions for improving it.
The tapestry that she is weaving is actually this painting of Finrod that I did a while ago. I figure that she's representing calmer, nicer things now that she doesn't have to weave her grandchildren's downfall and deaths.
Celegorm:
He was in a relationship with Oromë before the Exile. After his reembodiment, it took them a while by they talked it out and forgave each other. Oromë doesn't quite get elves, but he's really supportive.
He has a pair of wolf-head canes carved by Nerdanel. He alternatively uses both, just one and sometimes none depending on activity/pain level.
He wears bandages as compression garments because this is a world without elastane. His leggings have reinforced knees for support.
He's always heard about Míriel having the same thing as he does from Finwë, and he knew that when he started showing symptoms, Fëanor was terrified that he'd fade too. So for a long time, Míriel's story was kind of hanging above his head.
That's why it takes him a while to go seek her out after he's reembodied. Celebrimbor understands why it's important to him and he pushed him to it a little bit, so Celegorm dragged him along.
They're going to get along great. Míriel is both the quintessential grandmother and also she has a twisted sense of humour that Celegorm will just love.
Celebrimbor:
Celegorm was always his favourite uncle, and they became very close when Celebrimbor started having symptoms in the early years in Exile, and Celegorm stayed with Curufin in Himlad for him.
It took Celebrimbor a while to forgive him after Returning (not as long as Curufin but still) but they've gone back to being really close.
He was really unlucky with reembodiment: while he wasn't reborn with the physical aspect of his torture, the memory of pain and the trauma made his chronic pain a lot worse than it was before, and he can no longer walk unaided.
He designed the silver ring and wrist splints back in Eregion with Narvi's help, and ended up literally living up to his name (which means "silver fist/grasping hand").
Paradoxically these were a great motivation for him to work through his trauma and go back to the forge, because he couldn't find a silversmith in Valinor who could make good enough ones for him, even with all of his sketches and specifications.
A lot of his work since reembodiment has been designing and making disability aids for people.
He uses platform crutches to spare his hands as much as possible. He invented and designed them, of course, as well as the KAFO brace that he wears here. He's also a part-time wheelchair user.
He is still wearing dwarven beads in his hair. He obviously didn't bring anything back from Middle-Earth but he asked Gimli to make them for him in remembrance of Narvi. His tunic is also dwarven-inspired.
He is pretty chill about Sauron here. I don't know if there was a redemption (I have feelings about @chthonion's The Harrowing and @mynameisjessejk's Otter Mayhem) or if he's just been through enough elf-therapy to be able to joke about it. Celegorm's sense of humour is just Like That.
Celegorm and Celebrimbor are about to try Vairë's special painkilling tea for the first time 👀
Between all of them they should really open a disability aids shop or something. They just might! Míriel doesn't really ever leave Vairë's house but I think Celegorm and Celebrimbor will keep visiting her a lot, and eventually all of the grandkids will as well.

A/N: If you've not seen the Netflix show YOU, this may not be your thing. Still a great story, but it helps to know the show. Also, if you've not seen the show, I suggest you get right on that because it is AMAZING.

The classroom seems cold today, like there’s something missing. It’s distracting. I can’t quite put my finger on what’s off, but there’s a charge in the air like something’s about to happen; as if lightning could strike at any second.
I don’t mean proverbial lightning, as none of my students seem to have grasped any of the contextual undertones of the book we’re discussing, but actual, live lightning. If I opened the windows behind my desk just a crack, a bolt would sneak through and bury itself in the base of my skull. Maybe that’s what I need- a jolt of electricity, something to break me out of this fog that crept up around me and climbs forever higher threatening to suffocate me.
I think I’d take the lightning to the skull over suffocation, but we don’t always get what we want.
I’m perched on the edge of the desk when the door opens and Y/N comes rushing in.
Suddenly, all of my attention is on her.
She’s never late. Never rushing, always at least ten minutes early for every appointment, every class. She seems- off today, as well. Perhaps she can feel the imminent lightning strike as well. Wouldn’t that be funny? I find a kindred amongst these idiot grad students who can’t even seem to end this horrid debate.
“I am so sorry, Professor Moore.”
Y/N’s voice cracks a bit, which in itself isn’t very unusual. She’s one of the quieter students I’ve encountered, and the only American in my current circle of acquaintances. Her accent is faint, as if she’s attempting to hide it from her schoolmates. She’s been here a while, I can infer; sprinkling in local slang and adding letters to words where back home there would be none. She’s trying hard to fit in, but why? Why not be herself?
“I got held up by-”
I hold up my hand and smile softly. “It’s fine, Y/N. Please take a seat and try to catch up.”
For fuck’s sake, she’s only twenty minutes late, but it looks like every second has weighed her down like lead.
The others pick up their debate and I sit back a bit, cross my arms, pretend to listen. This teaching thing isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Occasionally, I toss out an idea and let them run with it. Sometimes, I pay attention, mostly I don’t. Mostly I’m thinking of You. Of how beautiful You looked at that art show, of how You gasped when you saw me like You couldn’t decide if You wanted to run to me or away.
From the corner of my eye, I see Y/N timidly raise her hand and You are temporarily pushed aside. She keeps her hand up but close to her chest, as if the very act of asking to speak is somehow terrifying.
How can someone so brave be so terrified to do something as common as speak in class? She’s clearly not a scared person by nature- she moved across an ocean to attend university when she could have gone for free back home to whatever state college she decided to attend. I’ve peeked at her transcripts- she’s smart. Not win a genius grant or a full ride smart, but smart. Why is she so nervous?
I smile and a bit of her nerves seem to quell. Her shoulders relax an inch and she smiles back.
“You know you don’t have to raise your hand, Y/N,” I tell her, laughing gently to put her at ease.
She dips her chin and then looks up with the most beautiful gaze I have ever seen. Her lashes flutter upwards in slow motion, the darkness of her pupils expand, pushing nearly every fleck of color away except the gemlike glow cast by the stained glass window over my head. She smiles and her lips shine like glass. Soft, pink, beautiful glass. I can’t look away and yet I absolutely have to. Thankfully, she speaks and I can act like I’m moving away to sit in my chair and not to get away from her.
“Sorry,” she says, sweet voice sweeping over the room. “I just didn’t want to jump in because I was late but-”
“But you have something to add,” I finish for her.
Her eyes float back to me and the atmosphere shifts. The foreboding of a lighting strike vanishes and the room seems to warm up. Quickly, I sit and scoot the chair close to the desk, set my elbows on the top, clasp my hands near my lips. I can’t stop staring at her.
She nods. “Yes. If that’s alright.”
There it is again, the tiniest speck of British on her tongue. How long has she been living here, and why? It can’t just be for school. She’s too interesting for that. She dresses to blend in; muted colors and clean jeans, her hair always swept back, face free of plastering makeup or too much color. There’s only ever that pink gloss and a gentle brush of mascara. It’s as if she doesn't know how beautiful she is, or perhaps, she doesn’t care.
Or was she one of those kids who never really got any attention until they blossomed but by then it was too late to fit into their personality?
She chews her lip nervously and shyly looks away from me.
No, she knows. She knows how beautiful she is, she just isn’t one to flaunt it; doesn’t need the attention. Or is that how she draws them in?
She’s already talking, but I can’t hear a thing she’s saying. I can hear her voice, that honey like glaze she adds to things when she’s speaking passionately, but the actual words, the meaning- I can’t follow a damned thing. I’m too busy trying to figure her out.
You flash through my mind for a moment; a sweet memory of a smile in the library when You didn’t think I was looking.
What is it about a smile that says so much without words? Does it show who we really are or who we’re pretending to be?
“I just think that love shouldn’t be so easily condemned.”
Y/N’s comment breaks through my thoughts of You and I clear my throat, straighten up in my chair, focus.
Across the room, Nadia rolls her eyes, clearly disagreeing with Y/N’s interpretation. “This isn’t love, it’s obsession. The two can’t and shouldn’t be intertwined.”
Y/N bites her bottom lip and shakes her head.
What does that lip gloss taste like? Berries, perhaps… No. Stop it. Focus.
“I disagree.” Y/N sits forward and tucks her hands below the table. “Love is obsession. Obsession is love. It’s not a tautology, no, but you can have one with the other. If you’re not even a little obsessed with the person you love, is it really love at all?”
My mind is zinging, my ears ringing. Does she truly believe that, or is it all for the sake of debating Nadia? They’ve been at war most of the semester, but this seems truthful, deep.
The bell rings before I can recenter and add anything. I give my head a little shake and stand up, the chair rolling back behind me.
“Class dismissed. Great job today. Lively, wonderful discourse.” I fake a smile at the rest and then settle on Y/N.
She’s taking her time, hanging back as she gathers her things. She stuffs a notebook into her bag and the pen she’s been using rolls away from her.
“Crap.” She lunges across the table for it, but it’s too close to the edge, too far from her reach.
I drop down at the last second and save it from a dusty fate of rolling across the floor. “Gotcha.”
She’s staring when I stand up. Our eyes meet and she doesn’t shy away, but looks even deeper somehow. A smile lifts her cheeks and my pulse quickens.
No.
She holds out her hand and there’s a fleeting second when I want to trace my fingers across her palm, feel how soft and warm she is, but no. I toss her the pen and turn, trying to get her out of my head.
I have more important things to do than become a tired cliche. Some professor falling for a student. It’s an outrageous thought, and besides, I don’t need Y/N, I have You.
I hear the zipper close and a chair being pushed in. She’s leaving.
She lingers in the door and turns back to me with a sweet smile. “Have a good weekend, Professor.”
Her tone is so genuine, so kind that it nearly knocks me backwards. I can’t remember the last time anyone has truly wished me a good time. It’s such an overused pleasantry, so common and boring, but not when she says it. Not when she smiles at me like that, with her eyes still and focused on me.
The warmth spreading through me is real as well and I can’t seem to push it away. “Thank you,” I managed, barely able to stand let alone return the sentiment. “You too.”
The rest of the day goes by quickly but it feels like forever. Two more classes, two more groups of students droning on about what the author really meant, when none of them, not a single one seems to be able to read between the fucking lines. None of them can step back and see the whole picture, capture the meaning as a universe unto itself and not just a line in black and white on an otherwise blank page.
Y/N could read between the lines. Y/N would understand the sum of it all. She would get it.
Stop. Thinking. About. Her.
On my walk home, I think about You. Wondering what You’re up to, where You are tonight. The sun is setting, dragging the sky down into a deep pink and I wonder if You are seeing the same colors where You are. Someday, we’ll sit together on an island in the Pacific and see what that sunset looks like. Would You paint it for me, I wonder…
Y/N crosses my mind for a moment as I gaze at the light reflecting off a window as I pass. Would the sunset hit her shining lip gloss in the same way? Would the pink deepen with the sky? Would she smile if she caught me staring, back away if I leaned in to drag my thumb across her juicy, pink bottom lip?
No.
Darkness has settled and I haven’t moved to turn on a lamp. I’m stuck, glued to my sofa, my hands nailed to my thighs. I keep my eyes open for fear of seeing her face, but bouncing around the room looking for a distraction is only giving me a headache. I need to get out. I need something to do. I need-
A knock at the door.
Who would be knocking at my door at nearly ten o’clock at night?
Curiosity pulls me off of the couch and I switch on the lights as I head to the door. The peephole is clouded as fuck, but I can see her outline. My stomach tightens, my shoulders tense.
What is she doing here?
Her hand raises to knock again, but I unlatch the door before her knuckles hand. I find her dangling in the air, her startled face the most appealing thing I’ve seen in ages. Her eyes go wide, her jaw drops just enough to give me a peek at her tongue. Quickly, she rights herself and shies her gaze away. She chews her lip and I notice the pink gloss is gone, replaced by a deeper red.
Everything about her is different tonight. Her hair is down and fresh, her eyes are lined in black and the color blended above brings out the prisms in her eyes. Her clothes are strange as well: a short skirt, tall boots, a blouse that’s too tight to hide anything. There’s a gold string around her throat, something old, a gift perhaps from a dead relative, or a chance find at an antique shop. She would like diving through boxes of discarded wares looking for treasures, wouldn’t she?
Or maybe I’m just distracted by her appearance. Maybe I should stop trying to pick her apart and send her far, far away.
I’m not that man anymore. I’ve changed. I’m good. I have to be good for You.
It’s been too long since either of us has said anything and the fact of it is hanging in the air between us like some kind of glowing, awkward sign.
Thankfully, she speaks.
“Um… Hi.”
It isn’t much, but it breaks the painful silence.
I smile, confused but curious. My ultimate downfall.
“Y/N. What are you doing here?”
I should say something about it being inappropriate, something about contacting me only during office hours, but she knows. That’s not why she’s here. I can see it in her eyes.
Her hands are tucked behind her back, I notice. She’s holding something, not just shoving her tits in my face, although, I can’t say that I mind. She sees that I’m looking and turns to the side a bit to hide it more.
She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, calming herself, steeling her nerves. Why is she so nervous? What secret is she hiding? What plan has been brewing all day in her head?
That’s it, isn’t it? She was late this morning, distracted and timid because she was planning to come here.
I should be flattered, but I’m too intrigued by her boldness as she slides past me into my flat.
“I know this is highly inappropriate,” she says, the confession like a song on her lips. “But… I… Well…”
Her nose scrunches up in the most adorable way while she searches for the right words. It’s endearing and makes me want to sit for hours and listen to her talk, discover exactly who she is and why.

She laughs and digs her tooth into the corner of her lip. “I’m not… stalking you or anything, if that’s what you’re thinking.”
I almost laugh. Almost.
“Nothing that nefarious,” she goes on. “But I did do something bad.”
The nerves seem to fall away from her the more she speaks and her demeanor changes. Her voice deepens ever so slightly and her hip pops to the side as she looks me over. Is she… flirting with me?
“I doubt you’ve done anything newsworthy, Miss Y/L/N…”
She takes a step forward and her lips pucker gently.
She is flirting with me.
“I hope not,” she says with a little laugh. “You see, I work part time in the admin office…”
I didn’t know that. I don’t know a lot about her. So many things to uncover, so many artifacts to dust off and examine.
“OK…” I push off from the door and take a step towards her. She counters, stepping backwards, guiding me to follow.
“And, well, I accidentally was looking at your files and-”
“Accidentally?”
She presses her tongue between her front teeth and smiles, eyes falling across my face. “Accidentally on purpose,” she clarifies. “I was… curious.”
“About me?”
Another step closer but she doesn’t move this time, letting me close the space between us by a few forbidden inches.
She sighs sweetly. “A little, yes.”
I dip my chin and look up, lifting my brows in question. She pulls in a quick breath, clearly enjoying the look I’ve given her.
“OK, maybe a little more than a little.”
One more step and I’m closer than I’ve ever really been to her, except just now when she invited herself in. I take a breath and she smells warm like vanilla, sweet like honey. The fantasy of berries on her lips falls away and I suddenly want to bury my face in the crook of her neck and do nothing but breathe in her scent, feel it invade my senses, infect my bloodstream.
Her chest heaves with a heavy breath and her eyes grow a little darker. She wants me.
“Maybe a lot curious,” she whispers, lifting her chin and blinking slowly.
Is she daring me to kiss her? Can she feel the lightning between us? Dare I?
No. She’s a student. She’s off limits. She’s not… You.
She must notice my hesitation and steps back a pace. She clears her throat. “Anyway. I saw that it was your birthday today.”
It’s not my birthday. Not my real birthday, anyway, just the one on the fake passport with the fake name and real photo.
I smile because I have to. “It is.”
Whatever she’s hiding behind her back shifts between her hands. “And, well, it’s presumptuous of me but I’ve never heard you talk much about friends or family and… you don’t wear a… ring. I just… Well, I know how hard it is to be a world away from what you know, and this city isn’t exactly kind in general, so…”
She’s rambling and I don’t ever want her to stop. Her voice ebbs and flows over me like a sultry tsunami and I can feel my fingers twitch, my blood rush through my system faster and faster.
“I just don’t think anyone should be alone or forgotten on their birthday so-” Finally, she reveals the mystery behind her back and holds out a green glass bottle. “I took a chance that you were a scotch man. At first I thought wine, but I know nothing about wine, and the guy at the shop said this one was good, so… Happy birthday, Professor.”
She hands me the bottle and without thinking, I take it. It’s not expensive by any means, but it’s the gesture that counts. She doesn’t let go right away, holding it with me, as if she can communicate her desires through the blown glass.
“Thank you.” I smile, let my finger brush against hers. “This is… very thoughtful.”
She lets go but doesn’t move otherwise. Her eyes are locked on me, her stare so pure.
I have to get her out of here.
Y/N shrugs and smiles, so confident now, so sure. “It’s nothing, really. I don’t even know if it’s any good.”
Her meaning lingers and I nod, gesture to the sofa as I start to peel off the seal on the top of the bottle.
“Join me for a glass?”
She bites her lip again and I nearly lose it.
“Love to.”
The scotch isn’t terrible but it’s not great. More like something you’d grab if you were just looking to get drunk, not necessarily gift someone you’re trying to impress.
Is that what she’s doing here? Trying to get me drunk? Surely, she knows she’s impressed me long before today. The looks between us in class, the lectures directed almost entirely at her have not gone unnoticed, but this, this is different. This is dangerous. She is dangerous.
The sofa suddenly feels too small. We sit close, drinking and chatting about life in London. She tells me about her family back home and how she had to cross an ocean to escape a misspent youth and an abusive father figure. I lie my way through a few answers but mostly, I let her talk.
The more she drinks, the looser her tongue gets, the freer her gestures. More than once, her hand falls to my knee and even though I should, I don’t push her away. Even though I should stand up, take her glass, ask her to get the hell out of my house, I can’t. I can’t do anything but stare at her lips as she speaks, drown myself in the tone of her voice, memorize the shape of her ears, her nose, slope of her shoulder. I’m lost in time with her and even though I know the clock is careening past midnight, I don’t care. I don’t want her to leave. I don’t want her to move. I want to be frozen in this moment with her. I want to die in her arms but not before…
“Professor?” She laughs gently, loose and relaxed from the alcohol. She leans in, her shoulder pressing against mine. “Are you even listening to me?”
Honestly, I have no idea what she’s been saying, but I can’t let her know that. I shift a bit, turning towards her. There’s barely room left for the Holy Ghost, as they say, but I doubt he’d begrudge me a little closeness, especially on my- on Jonathan’s birthday.
“I’m listening,” I whisper, captivated by the way she’s glowing. “I’m always listening to you.”
She squirms a bit and smiles behind her glass, takes another sip, downing the rest. There’s a drop of amber gold on her lip and it takes every ounce of restraint in me not to sweep it away with my tongue.
She pats the back of her hand against it and the moment is gone.
“Ya know, you’re one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. And I’m not just sayin’ that. You really are. I get you. I see you, Jonathan Moore. I see inside you.”
She slurs a bit, but not enough for it to be considered a crime if I touch her. That’s all I want to do, just a simple touch. Just to feel how soft she is beneath my fingers, how smooth the curve of her cheek.
Ripping myself away from the impulse, I take the glass from her hand and set hers next to mine on the coffee table. “I think you’ve had enough, Miss. Y/L/N.”
Her hand lands on my chest, right in the very center of me. Can she feel my heartbeat? Does she know how much I want her?
“You can call me by my name, ya know,” she says, dropping her chin and smiling. She’s so close that it would take but a tiny nudge to taste her. “Everyone just calls me Y/N/N.”
This is insane. She needs to leave. I need to slam the door behind her and never open it again.
“Y/N/N.”
Her name falls from my tongue like an incantation and her eyes go hazy. She leans closer, her breath fanning over my lips.
“Say it again,” she asks, nearly begging, “please…”
Fuck, this isn’t good. I can’t do this. I shouldn’t do this. I need to- Fuck, what does it all matter? She’s beautiful and interesting and smart and sitting next to me barely dressed and all she wants is me to whisper her name. What’s the harm?
“Y/N/N.”
The spell falls over her and I know it’s too late to back away. Her eyes fall closed and she leans in, pressing her crimson painted lips to mine. She exhales, pushes herself into the kiss, lets out a tiny moan.
She feels so good and it’s all I can think about. She pulls back and I lean in, needing more. My arms wrap around her, stealing her away. She melts against me, opens her lips to my tongue. The vanilla on her skin mixes with the scotch on her tongue and I’m blown away.

actually I also want to talk about the mechs’ approaches to the concept of good and evil and why literally none of them are anywhere near good
under the cut because it got so so long
I truly believe there was a point in Jonny’s life when he wanted to be good. That time was a decade past even by the time he met Carmilla. I think Jonny learned pretty early on that good was not an option for him, which soon morphed into a deeply-held belief that good is not something he is capable of. In reaction to this, he leans heavily into being terrible (see Interview Transcript). He believes there are good things and evil things (and plenty of ambiguity as well), and he finds good admirable, if uncommon and more than a little naive, but I think he fundamentally believes that any part of him that might have once been good was broken beyond repair before he became a teenager.
Nastya, on the other hand, views herself as capable of goodness. Sometimes. If she’s lucky and not missing anything and nothing goes wrong (see the storming of the Winter Palace). She even tried, post-mechanization, to continue to be good. But between the events leading up to her death and the unending horrors that followed, she came to the conclusion that good is not worth it. Good gets you hurt or killed or blows up in ways that make things even worse. She keeps to herself, looks out for herself and her own, and will actively hurt anyone else (because given the chance, they’ll almost certainly eventually do the same).
In a similar vein, Ashes probably figured out “good” doesn’t get you anywhere by the time they were eight. Good got you taken advantage of or killed. They do value loyalty-- if you’ve formed a relationship with someone and you value it, you will help them out, or at least not sell them out (cough mickey). This is honestly more pragmatism than anything, though-- they had no issue leaving Daedalus to die, despite having a “deal.” Mostly it applies to people they’re stuck with. Not betraying people makes things much easier when you have to spend a lot of time around those people. Do they care, in some weird way, deep down? Yes. Are they personally hurt by betrayal? Also yes. But for them, it’s the consequence of picking the wrong person to do business with, and bad things happening is as natural a force as stars shining-- including when they’re the person doing the bad things.
I think Ivy actually values good and sees it both as a desirable trait and one she’s capable of. She just has... a really skewed view of what constitutes good. A combination of trauma, personality, and the inevitable corruption of immortality have led her to an extremely utilitarian set of ethics (”for the greater good”). The “greater good” is very often preservation of knowledge, and that comes above everything else-- human life, continued existence of planets, etc. I firmly believe that at least once, the mechs have been on a planet where some authority was trying to destroy Terrible Knowledge before it could make it into the hands of their enemies, and Ivy brought it to those enemies for the sake of keeping it known. This may have led to the destruction of the whole planet, but at least the survivors fleeing from the wreckage still had the records! Ivy’s perspective is so zoomed out that most petty immoral actions (murder, theft, whatever the hell “neuro-arson” is) don’t really register as important one way or another.
Brian. Brian is a master of moral justifications. His two settings correspond to the most extreme possible version of the moral philosophies they represent: EJM Brian might destroy an entire planet to prevent the possibility of an interplanetary epidemic, whereas MJE Brian might give corrupt authorities the information that leads to mass arrests and executions because it would be wrong to lie to them. Also I think he enjoys coming up with these justifications and playing with being the moral equivalent of the monkey’s paw.
As far as the Toy Soldier is concerned, it’s not a person. Good and evil are person things. It’s exempt. I very much read its backstory as it slowly coming to reject humanity and all the things that come with it-- emotion, responsibility, even pronouns that don’t traditionally refer to objects (the latter of which can absolutely be read as voidpunk, but there is certainly room to criticize the other two). TS does what it wants, because it doesn’t see itself as part of the group obligated to follow moral rules.
Tim had a moral compass at one point. Maybe even a decent one. But then the horrors of war, etc. Tim believes and behaves as if all of his goodness died with Bertie. He can do whatever he wants now, because what’s the point?
Raphaella does not believe in good and evil. At best, it’s a nice fairy tale, at the worst, it’s a fiction designed to repress freedom and independence. Like Ivy, Raphaella is driven by knowledge, but where Ivy preserves it, Raphaella discovers it-- at any cost. Nonconsensual human experimentation poses no issue to her, because it will yield knowledge. Of course, being rude or hurtful exists, and doing bad things without sufficient reason may be rude or hurtful, but it’s not evil or wrong. Mostly in those cases the main problem is that other people don’t like it.
I’m going to be honest, I’m still very shaky on my characterization of Marius beyond Funney Man (death of byron von raum WHEN), but at the moment I see his crimes as falling under impulsivity or revenge. He feels like killing someone? Sure. He’s really annoyed at someone so constructs an elaborate plot to drive them to madness? Sounds fun. He might have felt bad about it at one point, but by the time he settles into immortality he cares more about A) whether it made him personally feel better and B) welp, can’t change it anyway. In this way, he can be a bit like Jonny, but while Jonny will do bad things for the sake of doing bad things, Marius most often has at least some reasoning, or something he hopes to gain.

Q: A year ago in Chicago at the players tour, we tried to talk to him about his accomplishments and he was having none of it. He kept talking about you. Do you have any thoughts about Mackinnon, the cup and his play?
A: Just seeing each year, the two prior to this one, you could see it stung. He wasn't happy. They came up short and he expected to go further. He expected to give it more of a run than they did but I think at the same time he was trying to learn through that. I just feel like the two prior to him winning were just extra determined. And he wasn't going to be denied. You see the way he steps up in the playoffs. He couldn't have done any more. Even in those runs he was unbelievable even when they were knocked out early. But the way that he's been able to raise his level in the playoffs. That's really hard to do and he's done in consistently, so I'm happy for him. I know that weighed on him alot. I know that he expected that with the group that they had in Colorado to be right there.
Q: So you didn't get cranky Nathan Mackinnon on the ice this summer?
A: Oh yeah, I didn't say that! I didn't say that! He was pretty happy for the first week. And then he's thinking about this year now.
Q: One of the things we asked him was when he talks to you, he could always to you as someone who - you've won a lot and he hasn't won yet. And even though he obviously thinks the world of you, he kind of admitted there was some level of the conversation that couldn't be there because you has experienced something he didn't. So how did the conversations change this summer?
A: I think when he goes through certain things, he realizes just how fine a line it is and I think he probably appreciates all the little things that go into winning. Not that he didn't before but he sees it close up. He sees how many people contribute to winning. All those role players that step up. All those plays that could have went either way. You can do everything right and you don't get a bounce sometimes. You can tell that he appreciates it even more having gone through it. He's really proud of that group and really appreciates it.

Queer Coding Pt 2 | "You only HC characters as queer for brownie points!" | Important Note: Wanting to feel included and cultivating your own joy in hostile environments is not a "performative act." Queer and trans folks are being legislated against at every turn, and real life can get heavy. No one is saying imagining fictional characters are gay is some kind of activism, none of it is being done for a pat on the head. Enjoying our free time by picturing ourselves reflected in media is a personal act, you don't have to make it about yourself (or act like your being bullied because of it). ALSO! Fetishizing queer and trans characters is not heroic or helpful to anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community. If you are cishet and find yourself hyper-fixating on queerness because it's "taboo" or "hot," do some personal reflection and reading. Additional resources and sources below. T*RFs fuck off.
Transcript: CRITICS: There is small, but loud, part of the population that is uncomfortable with trans and queer existence. Sometimes these folks are outright hateful and easy to spot, but many hide under the cover of liberalism or progressiveness while finding excuses to bash the LGBTQIA+ community for "justified reasons." The following is a small taste of the push back and hate queer fans get on their posts and some helpful ways to respond.
"Why does everyone have to be gay now?" Not all characters are gay, but some might be. It may feel like "everyone" is queer now because the previous number of queer relationships in media was zero. Going from having 100% of the representation to 95% of the representation feels like an attack when you're used to being center stage constantly.
"We need more positive heterosexual representations!" Cisgender heterosexual relationships are supported, perpetuated, and recognized by every major institution in society. Yes, patriarchal structures are toxic, but that does not mean queerness should be avoided in favour of more cishet focused media. The solution is bettering social constructs, no silencing the LGBTQIA+ community.
"Lesbians and bisexuals are transphobic + started the TERF movement!" Congratulations on perpetuating a false conservative talking point that has been disproven dozens of times! Lesbians have been statistically the most accepting of trans folks throughout history.
"You hate mothers and biological families!" Many queer and trans people have kids! Wanting to imagine your favourite characters are queer & trans does not mean there will be no kids in their life. At the same time, LGBTQIA+ folks not wanting kids is just as common as cishet people not wanting kids. None of this is an "attack" on cis women or mothers. Reducing people to their ability to procreate is fucking weird.
"This character is most likely straight!" Queer people are in the minority, we are very aware. That doesn't diminish the fact we like to see ourselves represented in the media we consume. Most people are right handed, but that doesn't mean left handed people don't exist.
"My interpretation of the source material is the most accurate and this character is obviously not gay!" Compulsory Heterosexuality is hard to unlearn, ever for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We are force fed narratives of what het relationships look like from a young age, and often project what we are most used to onto others.
"A queer person was mean to me, therefore I must form straight solidarity groups!" First of all, please reflect on your choices and consider what that would sound like against any other oppressed group. A queer person pointing out something you don't like isn't bullying, and banding together to "promote" straight relationships in "solidarity" is both embarrassing and bigot behaviour.

Can you tell more abt static i like them...
OFC!!!!!! Here is a very long post about their lore lol.
So here's their "in universe" lore:
Static is basically a weird eldritch cryptid thing, that can mimic other things, how well they do so is based on how long they've been interacting with whatever they're mimicking.
Their story starts after episode 2 of SPTO, when Matthew acquires Gideon's company. He's been working and comes to the conclusion that he needs a bodyguard because using his mystic powers to summon the hipster demon chicks every time he needs a bodyguard is tiring. So he sends out an ad for a bodyguard, and specifies in it that he wants a human.
Cue Static, vibing in wherever they've decided to hide out for the day, when they come across the flyer. They read it and decide, "Human, huh? Yeah I can do that." And mimic the first three humans they see, before combining their appearances into an amalgamation that is inherently their own. Thus: Boom! That's why they look the way they do. However, there are some aspects of their mimicry that aren't, like, right? Where they look off. An uncanny valley type experience for people who look at them.
(I'm adding a keep reading thing because I wrote so much :o)
Anyway, they end up going to the secret lair for the job, and Matthew asks if they are going to fill out an application there or if they already had one. Not knowing what that is, they end up filling one out there, and Matthew ends up writing everything down to do a two for one interview session. So their application ends up looking like this:

Afterwards, everyone who filled in their application is put into a tournament style fighting test, so that Matthew can gauge who is best at fighting and therefore the best at being his bodyguard. Static wins...of course.
Their job starts immediately afterwards, and they're taken to get a standard bodyguard suit n such.
From there they just stay by Matthew 24/7 because that's their job. Sometime before episode 5, them and Matthew end up dating due to a comedic falling mishap in which they fall into each other, accidentally kiss, and BOOM, Sparks!!!
They have their job until Matthew isn't CEO anymore, so they end up getting a job at a library, because when they had days off they'd end up going to the library to read. (They have read every single book there.)
That's all I have lore wise, but here are some fun facts too!
They love the rain, and they'll stand outside in it until it stops.
They blink the wrong way, and because of this they don't blink around other people
Their eyes are really sensitive to the blue light from screens so they have stronger than normal blue light glasses to mitigate this
At first they have next to no emoting ability. Their resting face is a smile, and they can move their eyebrows, but that's about it. The more time they spend with humans the more they can emote, because the easier it is to mimic them.
They love just saying fun facts they learned from all the books they read. However, if they are reading a fact from their phone around Ramona, she will pull up a picture of the nerd emoji and say it looks like them. They hate this.
Their height varies from 6 feet to, "a little too tall"
There is only one person who can't say their name, and she just calls them Static, everyone else just says it and thinks it's normal.

So they actually started off as a Mandela Catalogue OC, and they still technically are, there're just two different versions of them.
Anyway, around the time I was getting into Mandela Catalogue, my friends were talking about their SPTO ocs, and even tho the only context I had for the Scott Pilgrim media was the movie, I was like "Hey that sounds cool I wanna join" and my friends were like, "DO IT." so I ended up thinking about what I wanted to do. Anyway, then I made the Mandela Catalogue oc, and I was like "What if I used this design for my Scott Pilgrim OC?"
Their first design was then a human that just had a really wide smile and slightly too small pupils, BUT THEY WERE STILL HUMAN.
Then I started talking to my friends about them, and they started asking questions like, "Does he ever blink?" And to be funny, I said, "No." And it spiraled from there.

(sighing) This isn’t—this isn’t helpful. Maybe you can’t hear what I’m hearing, but two messages are coming in at once and as a result, I can’t hear a goddamn thing. A fox yapping and a bird chirping at the same time and I’m the fool trying to make sense of both of them. 
If you truly care for me to understand what you’re trying to tell me, then you can figure something else out, something that’s not…this. Meanwhile, I’m going to be doing my own goddamn investigating. 
I’m going to figure out how Leann lived. Surviving on your own, especially all the way up here, out here, and especially at her age…its no easy feat. Maybe she really was just proficient in survival because of her job, maybe that was enough, or maybe she wasn’t totally alone the whole time. Maybe the husband in the photos…maybe he was with her and died years ago. Maybe her daughters are still out there and have been gone from home for one reason or another. Maybe she had people to help her, people to rely on, people to…goddamn pass the time with. 
If she did, I’m going to find them. Even they are—even if they did eventually…
It matters that she’s dead. Of course it matters. I really, really wish that she wasn’t. But, dead or alive, she’s here. And that’s what matters. She’s existed in this strange after-world, right alongside Harry and I, without any of us realizing it. And as far as I can tell, the three of us have nothing in common beyond being women who are decently self-sufficient. Leann was born here, in North Dakota, and doesn’t seem to have traveled more than a few hundred miles from this general area her entire life. I don’t have an exhaustive list of every place that Harry has ever visited, but I’m pretty sure she’s never been out this way. So none of us crossed paths. 
Harry and I were criminals, and Leann worked for the government…but for the Bureau of Land Management. That’s hardly—I mean, it’s not the FBI, it isn’t like our paths would’ve crossed once Harry and I got arrested. And maybe it’s not important that we would’ve crossed paths or not, maybe it’s…maybe it’s some kind of weird gene we all share or something, something intrinsic in each of us that’s caused us to survive when everyone else…
What, evaporated? Leann’s body is the first that I’ve seen. If we were all immune to something, we’d see everybody who wasn’t. 
I have…I have no theories. After the thing with the tornado siren, I started to think again that maybe…maybe it’s not that everyone else is gone, maybe it’s that we’re somewhere else. That maybe that dark feeling I have sometimes about this being purgatory or hell is right. It’s what I deserve, and for years I didn’t understand what Harry would’ve done to earn the same punishment but then she—

I don’t know what Leann could have possibly done to land herself here.  And if it is some sort of cosmic punishment, well…where the fuck is everyone else? There are things that I’ve done that I’m not proud of, that I carry a hell of a lot of guilt and shame about actually, but I know there are worse people than me. Is this a perfectly calibrated hell for people who have done something bad but not that bad? Maybe Leann was a shitty mom, or was stealing money from her job, or…who knows. But if she had done something like that, then her and Harry being in the same place…sure, I can see that. 
But I don’t belong with them. What I did was so much worse, objectively.  I know that. I don’t pretend like it was right or noble or anything like that. Necessary, maybe,  or at least I thought so at the time—

I just don’t get it. I don’t understand how we’re connected. And maybe I’m looking for a connection where I’ll never find one, maybe it’s just weird fucking coincidence but that doesn’t feel…right. If only three of us made it past 1968, there must be a reason.

• i use garageband on my phone to write most of the time (sometimes bandlab or acoustic instruments, usually various pianos or organs)
• i use distrokid for platform distribution and i seriously recommend it it’s ridiculously easy and super cheap too
• my process is usually pretty linear, starting with a melodic idea and moving from start to finish with the song, then going back and buffing it out making it meatier and tweaking things as i see fit! then i’ll usually adjust the pitch/speed at the end simply bc the analog sound is a lot more pleasing garageband can get a little sterile after listening to it for so long :]
• writing a single song will usually take me anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on the complexity, spanning however many days (i have drafts that have been sitting in my phone for MONTHS bc i’ll often switch between them so none of them get too stale) -> however, some of my live songs work a little differently, seeing as a lot of them (especially on what never left the nebula) are actually almost completely improvised… you'll never guess which ones >:)

Hi Bea, hope it's okay for me to ask this, being part of the spectrum it's quite hard for me to understand things and evaluate them. Been IA for a past few months and I finally got to hear the new Louis' Zach Sang interview!! and I'm quite confused on why some people here said that Louis confirmed that he indeed have a choking kink but I've replayed it several times and I never heard him said yes about that? Am I just stupid or ? All I've understand that he's an andrenaline junkie. Help me out?

You are not stupid. If I think anyone is stupid, it is the people listening to that interview and coming away saying that Louis confirmed anything of the sort. I went back and listened again to remind myself exactly how that part of the convo went and because I want to be really clear about what Louis said, and for ease of reference, I've transcribed that section and put it under the cut.
I think it is reasonably clear what Louis is telling us here, and I think anything fans are saying about how this proves he has a choking kink is them justifying their behaviour. He talks a lot in general about how much he loves the energy of live shows, and the way that he almost feeds off that. What he described in Zach Sang was why he loves going down to barricade so much - that feeling he gets stepping out on stage is amplified, it's ten times stronger and better when he's down there with fans. He describes that as being the best part of the performance by far. I think it is clear this is a part of the show that Louis really loves.
None of what he loves does he describe as being related to the way fans behave and he does talk about it getting too much when a fan put their hands on his genitals. To suggest that anything Louis said in that interview, or elsewhere until now, means he consents to it, never mind that it signifies his enjoyment of it, shows a blatant disregard for what consent actually means and is genuinely quite terrifying. And every time a fan says something like "oh but look at hime he loves it" or "omg he's got a choking kink" they contribute to the environment where someone feels they can put their hands on his genitals without his permission.
I want to also take a second to focus on what he said about that Burberry shirt which was ripped and he said that wearing a button up was his 'first mistake'. I think it's quite likely Louis won't wear a shirt like that again, and that's an example of him being faced with a choice over changing what he wears to avoid fan's being able to pull his clothes off or wearing what he likes and being faced by that behaviour and I think that's representative of the bigger issue here.
Louis clearly loves the experience of being in the pit but being in the pit means fans touching him without his consent in a manner that could be quite harmful (whether that's a hand round his throat or a hand on his genitals). But I want to be really, really clear about this - Louis going back to barricade does not equal consent. I’d also like to be clear that whatever kinks Louis might have aren’t relevant - that wouldn’t make this a consensual interaction.

Louis: Yeah do you know what that happened at like one show and then I swear like every other show now someone's got their hand on my neck. It got a little bit weird when someone grabbed my dick one show and that was a little bit extra, that was a bit too much.
Zach: A little bit?
Louis: Yeah, yeah, but I'm not going to lie, and without going into specifics about whatever they do when I'm down there, the feeling that I get when I walk out for the first song and I see the crowd for the first time, that's like one-tenth of the feeling when I go down into the pit. It's like that feeling kind of bottled up and thrown over you, and there's so much energy and so much intensity in those moments that it is by far my favourite part of the show.
Zach: It is gross, seeing people stick their fingers in your mouth
Louis: That was weird!! Did you see that yeah?! I watched the video and I think I thought that was the mic or something, I looked a little bit confused in that video. I don't even remember it, that's the other thing, once you're down there it all happens so quick and it's so chaotic. Like I remember watching that video back and I don't even remember it happening.
Zach: That energy does make you think, it changes perspective, as it relates to music and impact and really understanding who you are performing to
Louis: Definitely, definitely, not quite got round to fully immersing myself in the crowd. Maybe next tour.
Zach: To be honest, they're getting very personal and handsy. [To the camera] Like watch your hands.
Louis: It gets intense I will say that. Across South America, different gravy that. It was amazing/scary at the same time. Incredible. I had a shirt ripped off me, a nice Burberry shirt, a button up that was my first mistake, I went with a button up shirt. I went down and they literally just pulled it from me and just completely ripped it to shreds.
Dan: That must be a weird experience though? Because with One Direction you guys never got to get that close to the crowd did you?
Louis: No, I feel like there might have been in the earlier days, I personally did do a bit of that. I don't know on what song, you're hardly going to go down to WMYB and immerse yourself in the pit, but yeah it is. I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I had an experience even remotely similar to that. It is by far the best part of the show and I've seen some of my fans speculate like 'Why does he like that? It looks scary and intense or whatever' but that's kind of why it's exciting. There is an element of danger to it that makes it feel really amazing. Like I said before, if you understand what a feeling of adrenaline is, it is like times ten in that moment. It's unavoidable, it is on top of you almost.

At this point, you should just compile everything you know about Teen Wolf (especially if my bby boy Scott is in the spotlight) into one BIG FILE OF GOOGLE DRIVE FOLDER and give them a link since they keep repeating the same thing over and over and over again.
And hey, I don't mind helping you compiling the stuff like same repeating/similar sounding asks, your old responses, transcripts and screenshot of proofs if you eventually do it. I feel bad for you and other Scott Defenders since I've followed you for a loooooong time and facepalming at the TW asks every now and then
Thank you for your compliments and your very kind offer, but I have actually been playing around with putting all the writing about Teen Wolf to a different use. I am in the "can I do this? should I do this?" phase, but I'm thinking of writing something off Tumblr for publication, using the work I've done here as a basis.
The book -- if it is a book and not an article or some other format and if it ever gets written -- will have three premises, which may or may not be sustained by the evidence I can gather.
Teen Wolf, its reception, and its fandom is an artifact of modern white culture (and not in a positive way). Foucauldian power dynamics and United-States-inspired consumerism have combined to empower and provide cover for a racist audience response that was hostile to a narrative focusing on a character of color over the course of the series and the movie.
The show's treatment is an example of how fandom culture has been enabled by Internet sites such as Tumblr, Twitter, AO3, and YouTube to somehow disguise their aggressive pursuit of decadent bourgeois values as revolutionary freedom from those same exact values. "Transformational fandom" has become all about making things palatable for a mainstream white culture that likes to flirt with the forbidden.
For the production, the fandom's hostility and its aggressive behavior turned out not to be a bug, but a feature. In other words, certain choices in casting and plot may have been not just simple fan service, but fan service designed to provoke fandom racism in a way that would maintain interest in the production. After all, any sort of attention is better than none.
Of course, this whole idea of mine is in its earliest stages of writing. The thing about non-fiction writing is sometimes a great hypothesis turns out to be wrong. It will require research and a publisher. But that's where I'm at right now.
As an aside, it was inspired by three things. First, was the incredible hostility to the movie by the fandom before the movie even premiered. The intensity of that hatred for a follow-up movie for a television show which hadn't been on for five years is unique and worth exploring. Second, there was a quote from Tyler Posey about how, when they first started filming Teen Wolf, Jeff Davis told him how his ethnicity would help the production. The quote didn't contain any further elaboration, but, obviously, from the result, Davis wasn't counting on what rightists would call "woke points." Finally, there was a direct quote from Jeff Davis about how the writer's room had determined Mason Hewitt was "too good" to suffer consequences of being host for the Beast. I've always hated that statement for its obvious intersection with racism and ableism.
It does occur to me that perhaps this wasn't just a confluence of random events that created this specific fandom phenomenon. Perhaps Jeff Davis and the production staff noted this aspect of fandom culture and had a strategy for integrating it into the show. I would never say that they meant for the hostile interpretation of characters of color to be taken as true -- it's obviously not -- but I might want to explore if they didn't promote the hostility in a way designed to enhanced the show's reception.
Again, I'm at the very beginning of the process. Your question pushed me farther down the road.

Also, would someone consider himself a “news writer” if he simply reads what other publications are writing and then rewrites the news in his own style? (If he can’t attend press conferences and sports events himself). I see many websites do this and I was wondering if that’s okay to do or not.
I know it’s weird to ask these questions but I’m new to sports writing and I don’t want to fail because it’s my dream. I’m sorry if I bothered you. You are a really great writer and I would like to hear your advice. 😊
uhm, I guess both of them have their role. there are some pieces that are always relevant but especially in sport, things change very rapidly.
re: news writing. I think there is a mix here. so, yes, you can be a news reporter who is reporting on other people's first-hand sources. like, say, this piece I wrote about drivers reporting pain from porpoising. technically, none of the quotes in it were from sessions the Drive had been in, so I referenced them back to publications I knew had been. even though I'd been working for RaceFans that weekend, it hadn't been my quotes, so the right thing to do is link back to where they're published.
a lot of news is secondhand, not just in motorsport but generally and so long as you link back to sources and reference where quotes are from, that's ok.
where people get mad is when publications wholesale lift quotes with no credit. sometimes it's ok to do this if it's eg: from the transcript of the FIA press conference that gets published on their website after the race or a lot of places do it from TV interviews. Generally, it's best to at least say where the quote was said, so "speaking in the post-race press conference, Verstappen called George Russell 'a mean, nasty man'" or "In a post-qualifying interview with Sky Sports F1, Lando inevitably berated himself for only dragging that tractor to seventh, saying 'it should have been fourth.'"
it's also worth being creative about who you speak to, if you're not at the track. I wasn't in Miami last year but managed to get an exclusive about the turn 14-15 area where drivers had heavy crashes because I got in touch with the people who made the barriers. it was an unusual way of doing it, maybe but it meant I got the information that that area couldn't have Tecpro because it had to be opened to traffic every night the track was there.
the basic advice of: be fair, don't claim anything that isn't yours is pretty useful. with news writing it's also worth, if you're going to be reporting it after the sites that were in conferences and at events, working out what the sensible angle is. can you add more explanatory detail than a breaking story? are there stats that can be dug into? are there things from previous events you can reference that might not go into a short, breaking story? re-reporting for the sake of re-reporting isn't likely to drive traffic but being able to give something more will get more readers; ask yourself 'now I've read the original article, what would make me read mine?'

(Apologies if you've shared it before and I just wasn't paying attention.) Also, thank you for your prolific and thorough critiques. I'm a more casual book fan and was tentatively excited to see the show forge a new narrative path while still guided by the same lifeblood, if you will. But at this point, hmmmmmm

There's just been article after articleeeeee of people who didn't read the books or just watched the film or whatever and keep going WOWIE IT'S NOT SUBTEXT, GREAT JOB, when like ? It was never subtext lol. And that's not entirely the show's fault, how mainstream perceives it, but they've been running with that and taking credit for it.

I think the show & RJ have also been pretty blurry with how often they claim they're not a remake of the movie and yet constantly make digs at the movie and even reference it often on the show itself. So I think sometimes they're commenting on the movie when they forget they've already told us they're not remaking the movie. =P
There's also this quote (I didn't screenshot bc there's an ad in the middle LOL!) but:
"It’s aggressive subtext in the first book, but by the time you read books eight and nine, it was the love affair of the century. Without spoiling too much, subtext becomes text in our show."
(Let's not point out that books 8 & 9 are ... *checks notes* Blood & Gold and Blackwood Farm. Okaaaaaay Rolin. 😪)
Also sorry by love affair of the century do you mean Lestat goes around and has adventures and uses everyone while Louis stays safely tucked away at Armand's house until he's needed, or? Sorry lmfao I'm so fucking. dghadgkjs.
That interview is full of nonsense that will make you want to scream if you're feeling brave.
Anyway I feel like, I've been obsessively watching the production unfold for the past year and I kept getting so many red flags like there's been so many odd comments and little sexist quips, the complete misunderstanding (or lack of fucks) about what Claudia is supposed to mean in the story, etc. I just keep getting aggressive CISHET MAN vibes from this team and the lens they read VC through.
And yknow what, fair whatever I guess, we all read different versions of the same book and they're the ones that got to make it. But idk I like VC for the dark elegant spooky existential angst, I didn't need it to be gritty and open up with shit jokes. And five episodes in I didn't need it to use outdated, dangerous rape tropes and I also don't need it to oversell the domestic abuse. (Hint: Lestat was already abusive as fuck from the moment we met him, don't oversell!)
It's an okay show lmao. It's not recognizable as VC at all except that it recycles the names. None of the characters have been accurate so far. Even Lestat, where Sam Reid is doing so many fun things with his delivery and mannerisms that almost seem like Lestat, is just so fucking OOC and a caricature and just really lacks the depth and nuance and sensitivity of who he is in the books.
If you can turn your brain off and not look at it as VC there's some fun moments, but it's also full of continuity errors and just plot holes and bad writing when you look too close, so don't try to analyze it too hard or you'll have a bad time lol. Even the stuff that's really interesting and that they get right, they tend to lose interest in and drop, or they mix it into so much vampire soap opera shenanigans that it's hard to walk away knowing what the episode is actually about. It's just. Woof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sophrine: All right, ladies, I've called this meeting here in beautiful Blackreach because we've been having some conflicts in the Girl Squad, and I want us to handle them peacefully. Sophrine: Seriously, if I see anyone pulling out her sword, I will Fus Ro Dah you. Serana: We're really high up right now. Sophrine: Exactly. Who wants to go first?
Lydia: (raising hand) Um, I have something. Serana, before you start throwing ice spikes, can you make sure none of us are in front of you? It's hard to wield a sword with an icicle stuck in your elbow. Serana: If you and Mjoll didn't just charge in with your swords every time we see a problem, you wouldn't be getting icicles in your arm. If Soph and I can handle it from a distance with arrows and magic, you don't need to slash and smash. Sophrine: Lyd, remember the no-swords-at-meetings rule. I propose we always try to kill things from a distance first, and if that doesn't work, we slash and smash. Deal? Mjoll and Lydia: (mumbling) Deal. Sophrine: Great. Who's next? Mjoll: I'm still pretty sure that at some point, Ronnie is going to snap and drink all of our blood. Serana: If I do snap, it'll be because you tell the same 5 stories over and over, usually when we're trying to be stealthy. Mjoll: Well, excuse me for trying to entertain everyone! Serana: Not excused. Sophrine: Mother Mara, you people are worse than Tullius and Ulfric. Mjoll, we love your stories, just not when we're sneaking. Serana, don't snap and drink our blood. Anything else? Serana: Well, I would complain about how much time we spend outdoors during the day, but I know you mortal types need that so whatever. My complaint is that Sophrine's husband is still really weird around me whenever I come over, even though he knows I'm not going to kill him. Sophrine: (sighing) Yeah, I'm sorry about that. Roggi's a small-town guy and the only vampires he met before you were the really murderous ones. I'm working on him, I promise. But hey, at least the kids love you! Serana: (muttering) Kids are sticky. Sophrine: Okay, we've aired out a lot of complaints here, and I think we can figure out solutions to pretty much all of them. Now I think we should end this by saying something nice about another member of the squad. End on a high note, you know. Sophrine: I'll start. Lydia, you're amazingly organized and I appreciate that you still hang out with us even though we're ridiculous. Lydia: Um... Serana, thanks for resurrecting mudcrab zombies sometimes. It's hilarious. Serana: You're welcome. Mjoll, I really respect how you called Maven Black-Briar a bitch right to her face. I've always wanted to do that. Mjoll: Thanks. And Soph, thank you for killing Alduin and saving the universe last month. Sophrine: My pleasure. Great meeting, girls.

The week before Pulp began their French tour to promote the newly released His 'n' Hers LP, Jarvis was interviewed by a journalist from a French newspaper in what sounds like a busy London café. The following is edited from the transcript of their 45 minute chat. Complete interview transcription: Here
Could you describe the other musicians in the band and tell me what kind of people they are?
Well, I'll have a go. Russell has been in the band the longest apart from myself. He joined at the end of 1984 [actually end 1983!]. I'd say he's probably the most intense person in the group as people will probably guess because of his stare. He's always had a piercing stare. It was always his method of getting girls. If he liked someone, he would just stare at them until they got so intimidated by it they'd come up and ask him why he was staring at them. And then they'd start talking! But because he's so intense, he's not the easiest person to get on with. I think sometimes people find him difficult, but he is a father now and I think that's calmed him down a bit. You can't stare at your child or it'll start crying! So it's kind of smoothed the edges off him a little bit.
He is quite unique - I've never met anybody else remotely like him... ever, so that's quite good. He's also a very good cook. He's unpredictable. I think that's the main thing he provides in the group - he's quite a random factor. Sometimes he'll play things completely out of tune, and you'd think 'what are you doing?', and then other times he'll play something that nobody else would think of playing. Like everybody in the group he's self-taught, so none of us know anything about scales or which notes should follow which, so it's always a bit of a lottery. But I think you get more interesting things that way otherwise you might just follow a formula. So that's Russell.
The next person to join was Candida. I think it's very important that she's in the band because she's a girl. I think often with bands if it's all boys together then no matter what you're like, it tends to get a bit kind of rugby club mentality. You know like when you hear men talking in a pub, most of what they're talking about is a load of crap. They just brag-off to each other, and most of it's lies. And it can get like that in groups sometimes so it's good to have a female influence. People always used to think Candida was a child because she's so small. She's probably the most stable person in the group - she's very reliable. Well, she's not very reliable in things like turning up on time, but you can always rely on her to be even-tempered and level-headed.
She also collects very bright things. She's quite funny because she gets a bit self-conscious at times. We were doing a video yesterday and she doesn't like being photographed or anything, so she drank a bottle of gin just to mime playing the keyboards, which was funny! She didn't even seem drunk either. Again, she's unique as well because I've never met another person like her.
So the next person to join was Nick. I suppose Nick is most normal person in the group - being the drummer - and he's strange in some ways in that sometimes he seems to want to put on this exterior of being a gruff northern man who's just interested in eating pie and chips. But he isn't really like that - he's quite well educated. He worked as a teacher - design and technology or something like that - and I suppose he's probably the most cagey person in the group in that you don't know what he's thinking about a lot of the time because he doesn't volunteer information about personal things. He prefers to talk about football and things like that.
And then there's Steve the bass player who was the last one to join in 1988. He used to be in a very bad heavy metal band. Well it wasn't heavy metal - they kind of missed their time because they were a bit like the Stooges and stuff like that. But since then there've been lots of groups that have tried to do that kind of thing, but no-one else was really doing it at that time. But he left to come down to London. I'd say he's the most efficient person in the band. He's good at being organised. When we make videos he produces them because he can phone people up and organise things to be at certain places at certain times.
He's currently homeless and living in a hotel. I think his life's in a bit of disarray at the moment which I feel a bit sorry for him about. He's probably the best looking person in the band and lots of girls like him. And I don't blame them! He's also the tallest member of the band - he's about an inch taller than me. I suppose I kind of know him best because we both live in London and so we tend to see each other more than the rest of the group who still live in Sheffield. So we go out to concerts together and things like that.
