HELLO I don’t know anything about King’s Quest! I’ve never even heard of it before. What’s it like, and how did it inspire your work?
@incandescent-creativity
Hello! Thanks for asking! This is going to be a bit of a long answer, so apologies in advance for the long post. XD
King's Quest is a fantasy game series by Sierra Entertainment, and the original series is made of 8 games (plus a reimagining of the same name that was released in 2015), all going in chronological order if I'm not mistaken. Depending on which game in the series you played, it involved a combo of point-and-click and typing in commands and/or just point-and-click to solve puzzles, complete tasks, and get past enemies to achieve some overall goal (often defeating a Big Bad at the end for story reasons).
Also, if you die (and there are MANY ways to die, ranging from nightmare fuel to straight-up hilarious), the narrator will make fun of your death. Literally. Just search up a compilation of deaths from one of the King's Quest games on Youtube and you'll get what I mean.
This franchise also has three books that are very hard to find used copies of nowadays, but I discovered that someone scanned them and shared files of those scanned copies on Reddit if you want to read those (I also have plans to read them and writing book reviews for each of them this year). Said books take place inbetween certain games, though, so be careful of spoilers.
As for my personal experience, I grew up playing King's Quest V in particular on the computer, mistook the title of it to just be "Sierra," and then I literally spent DECADES trying to find the game series again and only re-discovered it last year! It's now available through platforms like GOG.com and Steam for you to purchase and play for yourself.
The thing about King’s Quest, and I’ve mentioned it before, is that EVERY ITEM in each game is always useful for something. It might be an immediate task you find shortly after you find the item, or it might be much later in the game. If you forget to grab an item, or use the wrong item at the wrong time and realize later on that you actually needed it for a future task (some items are used unconventionally which doesn’t help, like using a pie to get rid of a Yeti in King’s Quest V), then you’re stuck. Walkthroughs exist for most if not all the games online to prevent this nowadays, but it’s still easy to screw up something and have to restart from an earlier save point.
I thought about this for a while, while replaying the games, realized that there weren’t really any fantasy novels I’d read that played with that element, and it led me to think: Why don’t I just try writing a novel inspired by King’s Quest? My goal is to capture the tone of the game (it’s a mix of lighthearted and darker moments, honestly) in its writing, but also add in the challenge of every item the main characters use HAS to be useful, even if used in an unconventional way. It’s been super fun writing this novel so far for sure!

Crash: Mind Over Mutant | Saturday, 10.14.2023
I know it's been a week since its original release date in North America, but what do you guys think of Crash: Mind Over Mutant after 15 years? I mean, the game and its prequel, Crash of the Titans are the only mainline games to lack a Japanese release for the series. Not to mention that it was the last major release for a Crash Bandicoot game until the 2017 release of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy before we got Nitro-Fueled (2019), It's About Time (2020), & Rumble (2023).
P.S.: this is the first and only game in the series to feature 2D cutscenes (parodies of either Dragon Ball Z or South Park).
box cover used is from the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail - Blast Review
Developer: Sierra Entertainment Rrp: £4.49 (Gog.com) £4.79 (Steam)
Sometimes there's nothing I like more than to play a point and click adventure game, I have fond memories of playing the likes of The Dig and Discworld 2: Mortality Bytes and sometimes I'll go back to them. Sadly, what I played here was not a game like those, in fact this might be the worst I've ever played. The word puerile doesn't begin to describe this game. I will admit I did have some knowledge of this game before even booting it up, the Leisure Suit Larry games aren't exactly known for their subtlety but I didn't expect it to be utterly insufferable. It just tries so hard to be funny, every object that can be interacted with has some 'funny' comment about it. Oh, and we can't forget that the cursor is a condom... hohoho how funny, because sex amirite.
Tumblr media
To make matters worse the way the game plays is just... awful. One specific mechanic that it has I found just frustrating, which is the 'other' option. You see, if you right click and object you get to pick from a few options; look, push, take etc. However they also have included one called 'other' if you select that it brings up a text box for you to write a simple one word instruction. The thing is how are you supposed to know what to do there? This sort of game is well known for working with 'moon logic' (which basically means that the answer for the puzzle isn't obvious unless you know exactly what the creator was thinking at the time) so giving the player a text box where you could put virtually anything in isn't helpful. I understand that this game is from back in 1996 and at the time there wasn't an 'accepted' way of implementing systems and mechanics, which meant that every studio came up with their own way of doing things. However, Lucasarts had released Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and The Dig by the time this came out, and I don't believe that they patented the way that way those games were interacted with (especially since many other companies made games that worked in a similar manner). Which says to me that Sierra just made it work differently because they could.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I say give this game a pass. Some games age well and are still a joy to play, others have something unique about them that keep you coming back. This one though? It makes me regret the time I spent with it.
