On this day, October 14

In 2022: My Chemical Romance performed their 56th show of the 2022-2023 Swarm tour in Inglewood, California, USA. At this show, "Kill All Your Friends" was performed live for the first time since 2008, and "All the Angels" was performed live for the first time ever. For the first part of the show, a photo of a person (potentially their producer, Doug McKean) in the recording studio was taped to the drums. Later in the show, three tally marks were drawn on the drums. The majority of the songs performed at this show were from their third album, "The Black Parade". (🖤)

Kauai O'o A'a (Moho braccatus)

Extinction Date- 2000

Habitat- Kaua’i Island

Size (Weight/Length)- 20 cm

Diet- Snails; Fruits; Flower nectar; Insects

Cool Facts- The Kauai O’o A’a was a honeycreeper native to the Hawai’ian island of Kaua’i. These small birds nested in the thick forests of the island and licked flowers for nectar. Kauai O’o A’a relied on tree hollows in old trees to create their nests and as these forests were destroyed to make room for houses, the honeycreepers were rapidly declining. Introduction of invasive predators like the Polynesian rat and small Indian mongoose began to wipe out Hawai’i’s native birds. Mosquitos carrying avian malaria and hurricanes ended up wiping the rest of the population out. The last living bird was spotted in 1985 and the last singing male was recorded in 1987. Out of the original 50 species of Hawai’ian honeycreepers, only 17 species remain today and all are endangered. Efforts to reduce avian malaria, reduce invasive predator populations, and captive breeding efforts hope to increase the populations of the remaining honeycreepers.

Violet Sea Snail (Janthina janthina)

Conservation Status- Unlisted

Habitat- Indian Ocean; Pacific Ocean; Atlantic Ocean

Size (Weight/Length)- 35 mm

Diet- Phytoplankton; Hydrozoa

Cool Facts- Despite being a snail, the violet sea snail knows how to travel immense distances. By blowing bubbles of mucus, these sea snails float to the surface of the ocean and travel wherever the waves take them, feeding on hydrozoa as they go. The lighter color of their shell faces the ocean floor and their darker side faces the sky in a unique form of countershading that nearly rends them invisible in the deep blue. The shell itself is extremely thin, further allowing buoyancy. Despite their thin shell, hermit crabs seemingly like the coloration and will use the shell after the snail’s death.

Rating- 12/10 (Purple snail gives me serotonin.)
