 Saint Agatha
231 - 251
Feast Day: February 5
Patronage: Sicily, breast cancer, bakers, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wet nurses, natural disasters
Saint Agatha was born into an important Sicilian family and from an early age dedicated herself to Christ as a virgin. Legend has it that one suitor, Quintian, after being rejected, had Agatha imprisoned in a brothel for one month to change her mind. After suffering abuse and humiliation but never wavering, Quintian then sent her to prison where she suffered the torture of having her breasts cut off. Then an earthquake struck, killing Quintian and Agatha died peacefully. She has been invoked during Mt. Etna’s eruptions.

To Lovino and Tolys:
Any Saints you guys have a particular devotion to?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tolys: I'm not terribly religious, but there is a certain comfort in having someone looking out for you.
**Contextual Note, TW for brief mention of sexual assault and torture:
Just a brief overview of the saints Lovino and Tolys mentioned. St. Agatha of Sicily was a Christian noblewoman who was killed during the Decian persecutions. She made a religious vow of chastity that a Roman prefect attempted to break. As punishment for rejecting him she was imprisoned and forced to "work" in a brothel. When this did not break her, she was tortured, most notably by having her breasts ripped off with hot tongs. This is why she is often depicted in art with tongs or presenting her breasts. A miraculous earthquake prevented her execution and supposedly St. Peter appeared to her and healed her wounds, but she eventually died in prison of unknown causes. Among other things, she is the patron saint of victims of torture, rape victims, breast cancer patients, fires, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions (particularly from Mt. Etna). As Lovino mentioned, she is the patron of Sicily, as well as the Sicilian city of Catania.
St. Christopher was also killed during the Decian persecutions. According to legend, he traveled to find a king who claimed great power, only to find he feared the devil. When he found a marauder who claimed to be the devil, he found that this criminal feared Christ. Learning this, he chose to become Christian and serve people by helping them cross a dangerous river. In doing this, he helped a small child across the river who was much heavier than he anticipated, and almost died in the process. After crossing, the child revealed himself to be an apparition of Christ, pleased with his work. Christopher was eventually beheaded after travelling to Lycia to help his fellow Christians. Among other things, he is the patron saint of travelers, transportation, bachelors, athletics, and storms. As Tolys mentioned, he is the patron of Vilnius, Lithuania's capital (Riga as well!)

Are there any Basque martial arts or fighting styles?
Kaixo!
Ooooh anon, how we love you asked us that! Because we would have bet there wasn't but investigated and there actually IS and we didn't know and now we're kinda obsessed with it??
Ok, ok. We calm down.
You may already know that Basque people love sticks. We just do. We come from shepherds and it shows. We give a stick - makila in Basque - to the elected Basque president:
Tumblr media
We use it to sing:
Tumblr media
And to dance:
Tumblr media
And we used it to FIGHT.
Tumblr media
Yes! The Makil Borroka or Basque Stick is presumed to be a very ancient self-defense technique developed by shepherds to protect themselves and their flocks from wild animals, but it slowly evolved as some sort of poor people’s fencing. Its practice peaked between 18th and 19th century, and Basque fighters - called makilkariak - were said to be excellent. So good, in fact, legend goes Napoleon hired some of them for his army.
It’s documented mainly in Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Iparralde, where they would use shorter makilak. In 1951, etnologue René Cuzacq wrote how this style was still in use in certain areas of Iparralde: «They quickly start fencing after the slightest argument. Basques wield sticks in a unique fashion that has rules and masters.(...) During a while entering Baiona with a stick was banned, because it was rare a single market day without a skull cracked or several limbs broken.»
The sticks were made of loquat, blackthorn, ash tree or hazelnut tree wood, and wheighed around 1kg / 2.20lb. The attack and defense in Makil Borroka is based on rotation, making it a very elegant but dangerously swift fight that only needed one hit to be decisive, just like with a sword. As you can see in the video, it’s not surprising that the set-phrase to start a fight was goazen dantzatzera or let’s dance.
youtube
Iñaki Ganboa - the one shown solo in the video - is the one who rediscovered this Basque fighting style and is currently working hard to recover this tradition and to train future masters who will later teach around Euskal Herria.
Fun fact: he rediscovered it thanks to a Sicilian friend who told him that he just watched a documentary about a Sicilian stick fight - called Paranza Lunga - that was taught by Basque soldiers around 1400. Ganboa went to Sicily and talked with the documentary makers, as well as with masters in the Paranza Lunga, and it’s believed to be a true story.
Any Sicilian friend who can confirm??

The Top 40 Most Popular Operas, Part 3 (#21 through #30)
A quick guide for newcomers to the genre, with links to online video recordings of complete performances, with English subtitles whenever possible.
Verdi's Il Trovatore
The second of Verdi's three great "middle period" tragedies (the other two being Rigoletto and La Traviata): a grand melodrama filled with famous melodies.
Studio film, 1957 (Mario del Monaco, Leyla Gencer, Ettore Bastianini, Fedora Barbieri; conducted by Fernando Previtali) (no subtitles; read the libretto in English translation here)
Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor
The most famous tragic opera in the bel canto style, based on Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor, and featuring opera's most famous "mad scene."
Studio film, 1971 (Anna Moffo, Lajos Kozma, Giulio Fioravanti, Paolo Washington; conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario)
Leoncavallo's Pagliacci
The most famous example of verismo opera: brutal Italian realism from the turn of the 20th century. Jealousy, adultery, and violence among a troupe of traveling clowns.
Feature film, 1983 (Plácido Domingo, Teresa Stratas, Juan Pons, Alberto Rinaldi; conducted by Georges Prêtre)
Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI
Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)
Mozart's comic Singspiel (German opera with spoken dialogue) set amid a Turkish harem. What it lacks in political correctness it makes up for in outstanding music.
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1988 (Deon van der Walt, Inga Nielsen, Lillian Watson, Lars Magnusson, Kurt Moll, Oliver Tobias; conducted by Georg Solti) (click CC for subtitles)
Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera
A Verdi tragedy of forbidden love and political intrigue, inspired by the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden.

Part I, Part II
Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann)
A half-comic, half-tragic fantasy opera based on the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, in which the author becomes the protagonist of his own stories of ill-fated love.
Opéra de Monte-Carlo, 2018 (Juan Diego Flórez, Olga Peretyatko, Nicolas Courjal, Sophie Marilley; conducted by Jacques Lacombe) (click CC and choose English in "Auto-translate" under "Settings" for subtitles)
Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman)
An early and particularly accessible work of Wagner, based on the legend of a phantom ship doomed to sail the seas until its captain finds a faithful bride.
Savolinna Opera, 1989 (Franz Grundheber, Hildegard Behrens, Ramiro Sirkiä, Matti Salminen; conducted by Leif Segerstam) (click CC for subtitles)
Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana
A one-act drama of adultery and scorned love among Sicilian peasants, second only to Pagliacci (with which it's often paired in a double bill) as the most famous verismo opera.
St. Petersburg Opera, 2012 (Fyodor Ataskevich, Iréne Theorin, Nikolay Kopylov, Ekaterina Egorova, Nina Romanova; conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov)
Verdi's Falstaff
Verdi's final opera, a "mighty burst of laughter" based on Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Studio film, 1979 (Gabriel Bacquier, Karan Armstrong, Richard Stilwell, Marta Szirmay, Jutta Renate Ihloff, Max René Cosotti; conducted by Georg Solti) (click CC for subtitles)
Verdi's Otello (Othello)
Verdi's second-to-last great Shakespearean opera, based on the tragedy of the Moor of Venice.

Il Principe
Or- Power, as held and wielded by Kinn, my beloved son.
[Korn] [Porsche] [Vegas]
After the Insanely Amazing response I received for Part 1 of this series (particularly from my idols, my heroes @luckydragon10 @antique-forvalaka @moerusai and @yeetlegay ), here's my attempt at dissecting Kinn as a source of authority.
First- the man, the myth, the legend: Kinn Anakinn Theerapanyakul.
Tumblr media
Let me introduce you to a fun little concept called somaesthetics. Or as my professor called it, power is as power looks. Basically, the more aesthetically pleasing or powerful-looking a person is, the more power they amass. And Kinn has attractiveness in spades. He commands not only every gaze in the room, but also the minds behind them. The reason why most popular (or at least widely known) figures of authority/politicians have a signature style is because it is 1. designed for maximum impact and 2. meant to foster a feeling of affection through a sense of "knowing" or familiarity. Kinn uses this effortlessly by wearing a bespoke silhouette and a rich, jewel toned palette (mostly a deep maroon which, wouldn't you know, is considered a royal colour). His facial expression is a deliberate Imperious Raised Brow moment paired with a smirk, his shoulders and back are straight but relaxed (unlike Vegas, whose relaxed lean is also coiled and full of tension), his physique is chiselled and well-maintained and, as has been pointed out in previous IMM posts, he makes his every seat a Goddamn Throne- ALL motifs associated with power and authority. Simply put, Kinn gets part of his sway by looking powerful.
Much like Papa Korn, our boy Kinn is also seen as kind, mature, stable and honourable. We see bodyguards clamouring to be part of his inner circle. Unlike Papa Korn though, Kinn has another factor working for him- a tight inner circle of advisors who are the only people he places his trust in (as seen in- the classical Athenian parliament, the Pharaoh's inner court, Mughal emperor Akbar's 9 gems and yes, the classic Sicilian mafia structure- all extremely powerful, stable structures). He shows a basic level of courtesy and respect for his staff, as any employer would, but they're always held at an arm's length. And that exclusivity, my friends, has the effect of people simply attaching power to his person, without him having to do anything.
However, the Young Master's power is just that- young. He's more under threat of assassinations, horse-trading, betrayals because his claim to the throne is still in its fledgling stage of legitimacy. Only the masses have given him their seal of approval, not the other elites around him (except, of course, for his father). And the thing is, Kinn has a simple, yet uniquely ingenious safeguard- he shares power with his inner circle to reinforce his strength through numbers. Think about it- a circle of people who have the rare gem of his trust and adore his every breath. What better protective circle could a King ask for?
At this point, I'd also like to pick at a running theme with Kinn's character arc:
The juxtaposition of Kinn's unwilling, loving rule with that of Vegas' compulsive need for Absolute and Brutal Control.
The Queen and the King
First, Kinn vs Vegas- the two princelings
Tumblr media
If you look carefully, even though it's Vegas in the foreground, your eyes are immediately drawn to the far better lit and mystic-looking Kinn. As the older cousin, Kinn is not only a rung up in terms of age (a component that lends more power to your position in Asian cultures) but he is also actively given control of the Theerapanyakul operations. Why? Because Vegas is, simply put, one clown shoe short of a circus. He is cruel, needlessly violent, with a volatile emotional state, and palpably slimy (think Roman emperor Nero). You cannot cannot CANNOT trust this guy, even for what little trust is transacted in a Mafia setup. That is not to say that Vegas lacks power, but I'll talk about him in a later post. Again, look at the photo. See Kinn's expression? That is how I look at my nephew when he says that he's a big boy and can cook his own food- sure buddy, thank you for your contribution. He's actively dismissive of Vegas, not because he thinks his cousin is stupid, but forcibly stripping your rival of their power is what keeps yours going (Machiavelli, anyone?). Kinn outweighs Vegas in all aspects, except for one- Porsche. Which brings me to-
Tumblr media
Porsche is a wild card at this point. Yes, he is a kingmaker- Kinn's closest advisor, the only soul the prince can rely on eyes closed. Yes, he becomes the very thing that propels Kinn into, dare I say it?- overtaking his father's influence over their world. But for now, Porsche makes Kinn vulnerable. He makes Kinn jealous, anxious, irrational, honest, soft. So unless he locks that down and puts a ring on it (something that senpai @iffervescent explores in their fic The Power in the Taking), Porsche is a very visible chink in his armour and will be used by Vegas as a bargaining chip and an emotional battering ram to break Kinn. Overall, though Porsche is good for Kinn, because he stabilises the man, gives him a confidante. Any psephologist would tell you that an alliance of two is the ideal, because it has higher stability, flexibility and better cooperation and conflict resolution. Plus, like I mentioned before, Porsche's allegiance, his complete devotion is Kinn's (Porsche is that weapon that @laughsalot3412's fic talks about). He is the Queen- near indestructible and irrevocably, almost ferally, in love with the King. And what is a Kin(n)g without his Queen?
Tumblr media
In conclusion, Kinn is the manifestation of Machiavelli's Prince. A Lord of the Shadows, he rules with benediction and deception as his favourite weapons. He doles power out so it is returned tenfold. He is an enigma, beloved by his people and a cold, brutal opponent. He sacrifices his own personal code of honour so he can protect and bring order to those he rules over. This is the only incarnation of royalty that has my approval.

Saint Vitus c.290 - c.303 Feast Day: June 15 Patronage: actors, dancers, comedians, epileptics, dogs, and against oversleeping, snake bites, storms, animal attacks, lightning and Saint Vitus Dance (Chorea).
Saint Vitus, the son of a pagan Sicilian, became a Christian along with his tutor and nurse at the age of 12. When his father found out he had them arrested and tortured. Legend has it that an angel freed them from prison and they fled to Rome. While there, Vitus exorcised a demon from Emperor Diocletian’s son. When Vitus wouldn’t sacrifice to the pagan gods, they attributed it to sorcery and threw him in a pot of boiling oil, along with a rooster (as part of a ritual against sorcery). The rooster became a symbol for Vitus, making him the patron against oversleeping. He was martyred in Lucania, Italy and is one of the 14 Holy Helpers.

Some headcanon Nyotalia names I'd like to share plus some of my reasoning behind them, because why not?
America: Eleanor Louisa Adams; it's primarily a reference to Eleanor Roosevelt (but also Ellie makes a cute nickname for her)-- there's some debate over whether it's another form of Helen or not, but if it is I think the 'bright, shining' meaning would suit her a'la 'shining city upon a hill' vibes! Her middle name Louisa is a reference to Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, and I don't think I need to explain the Abigail Adams reference with her surname.
England: Emma Guinevere Hargrave; I wanted to give her a name in reference to literature, so why not draw inspiration from Jane Austen's Emma herself? The Guinevere is in contrast to 'Arthur', and basically a name drawn from Arthurian legends because yes; Hargrave means 'grey thicket/grove', and it brings to mind the idea of gray skies over London.
Canada: Sarah Maud Cartier; Sarah is biblical like 'Matthew' is, and I mostly chose it because it sounds homey and I like to think she has a more homey personality compared to Matthew's weirder vibes, but also it's a reference to the poet Sarah Anne Curzon; Maud meanwhile is from from Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. Evidently, I like my literature names.
Russia: Svetlana Rurikovna Akhmatova; Svetlana's an Orthodox Slavic name, but also a reference to Vasily Zhukovsky's ballad 'Svetlana'; Rurikovna is a patronymic that pays homage to Rurik, the founder of Novgorod and whom Russian history likes to trace far back when it comes to the founding of the nation (though there's a lot of contentious debate on that which I won't get into, so feel free to substitute with your own patronymic headcanons); Akhmatova is a reference to 20th century poet Anna Akhmatova.
Germany: Ava Schelling; Ava sounds simple and practical, which is something I think that suits her, but also a reference to Ava of Melk.
Prussia: Dorothea Ritter; Dorothea means 'God's gift' which I feel tells a lot about her already, but it's also a reference to the princess Luise Dorothea of Prussia; Ritter means 'rider/knight' and both give names of power, and overall together they make a very powerful name that suits her somehow I mean--
North Italy: Sofia Bandettini; Sofia means 'wisdom' which is a reference to how a lot of cities during the Renaissance were in the north (and specifically I'm thinking of Florence, because while I like to think Veneto is Feliciano's heart, in Nyotalia North Italy's heart is Tuscany); Bandettini comes from Teresa Bandettini, who was a famous performer during her time.
South Italy: Fiammetta Bandettini; Fiammetta is the nickname of Maria d'Aquino, a Neapolitan noblewoman, but the name also means 'little flame' which is also a reference to the south's prevalence of volcanoes in the south like Mount Etna; Bandettini is from her sister ofc, which I think she was forced to change her surname to during Risorgimento, but prior to that it was Sciara, which is a Sicilian surname.

Granita di limone
One cannot speak of Sicily and lemons without a mention of lemon granita, an intensely refreshing sweet-sour frozen confection of sugar mixed with water, lemon juice and rind. Sicilians' passion for granita is such that many eat granita even for breakfast, often accompanied by a soft roll called brioscia, or brioche. In a traditional cafe or bar, with or without brioche, in every season and at any time of day or night, waiters serve up elegant glass dishes with pale yellow scoops of the island's signature delight, granita di limone.
Tumblr media
On Sicily's eastern side this passion is connected not only to the coast's prolific lemon groves but also to Europe's most active volcano, Mount Etna. Along with plumes of smoke and slow-moving lava flows, the mountain is known for its snow. Before refrigeration, snow provided an astonishing and invaluable source of cold in the relentless scorch of summer. In ancient times Greeks and Romans packed snow into caves on Etna's slopes and withdrew it as needed to chill their wine. Snow merchants profited from Etna's natural cold power into the 1940s, collecting snow from the grottos every night and hauling it in horse-drawn carts down the mountain to Catania, where it was used to preserve food and make ice cream.
The island's earliest Arab residents must certainly have employed Mount Etna's snow for their delicious slushy drink called sarbat or sharbat. A cold fruit-sugar syrup, it was consumed between courses to refresh the palate and likely evolved into the sweet ice we call sorbet or sherbet. Yet it is only legend that sorbet and gelato were born in Sicily during the Arab reign, since real ice cream was not made until the endothermic principle of putting salt on ice was introduced around 1650. Granita, however, is not a true ice cream but a kind of frozen lemonade, and its origin is probably much older, enjoyed long before ice cream was invented. Lemons and sugar, both native to India and Persia, formed a natural marriage of sweet-tart tastes, and the most natural concoction one could make was simply to combine the two.

The Arco di San Benedetto was built in 1704 to connect the two parts of the Benedictine monastery in Catania, Sicily.  Following the Sicilian earthquake of 1693, a city ordinance prohibited the construction of the proposed bridge on the grounds that it would be a hazard in the event of seismic activity.  According to legend, the Benedictines defied the ordinance by building the entire structure in one night so it would be completed before city officials knew about it.
