Detective Conan M26 (Casual) Review as a long-term CoAi shipper
This is just a casual review. It's not serious and my own opinions.
Tumblr media
As someone who had shipped CoAi as a child (even before I knew what shipping was), I squealed so hard when I saw the movie trailer. It seemed like they were going for CoAi shipping HARD.
Of course, not everything is perfect, and this movie is far from the best (I still think the best DetCo movie is M6, which was the Phantom of Baker Street).
I do have certain aspects that I liked and disliked in this movie (SPOILERS AHEAD):
Let's start off with what I liked in this movie.
THE COAI SCENES.
This movie was the ultimate ship-bait for this couple. 2023 was their fucking year. The creators shipped CoAi hard this year. This was from making this movie, re-releasing the Bell Tree Express episode into a Haibara Ai-focused movie called "The Black Iron Train", the sale of official CoAi Uniqlo x ShonenJump shirts, and even an official ShinShi poster. It was like, CoAi suddenly had the spotlight - which was weird since canonically we know they aren't a couple.
There were several scenes that CoAi fans loved a lot. Two of them stood out to me:
The first was the scene where Conan gave Ai his glasses. It was a reference to the Haido Hotel case scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this was really one of the most iconic and romantic scenes in the series. Him placing glasses on her as a reassurance, and they even did a little Superman-Louis Lane kind of reference.
Granted, I still preferred the scene in the actual anime or the manga panel. They stayed in that scene longer. But it was definitely a callback to the older DetCo episodes.
Believe it or not, Uniqlo even made a shirt out of this scene. This was around in 2023 when Uniqlo would collaborate with Shonen Jump and when they sold Detective Conan shirts, one of the shirts were of this scene. Which I find really odd given that there was no sale of ShinRan shirts (I don't recall ever having one).
The Uniqlo shirt design can be found here. I actually even got this particular shirt. I just had to.
The second scene in the movie that everyone was talking about was the underwater CPR "kiss" scene.
Tumblr media
But since the movie was going to have a submarine, I figured there would be a scene where they would be underwater.
The other movie I remember that had an underwater "CPR" kiss was in Movie 2, "The Fourteenth Target". It was between Ran and Conan. It was the scene where they were underwater and Conan was losing oxygen so Ran gave him a "kiss".
But I never thought they'd actually go through with this kind of scene with CoAi. While yes, she's trying to give him CPR because he is drowning, we all know what they were trying to do with this scene. She also attempted it not once, but three times. And their ascend to the top of the water's surface was very romantic. She also seemed unhappy when she thought she had to leave him, but Conan noticed her sadness and reassured her. There was also a flashback to him in that bus episode - "The Mysterious Passenger". That episode where Conan saved Haibara Ai from an exploding bus and told her "Do not run away from your fate". I think that was a great callback too.
I also squealed when Ai acknowledged that they kissed! It was like, OH WOW HAIBARA YOU KNEW. It sucked that Conan is still clueless ever, but that was a fangirl moment for me.
There was also more spotlight on Haibara Ai, of course. Given how she's popular, we got to know snippets of her childhood. I got emotional upon knowing that Ai stood up when Naomi was getting bullied, but that in turn she got bullied and became a social outcast. I think that it is very characteristic of Ai to be a social outcast, given that she appears cold and quiet at first. But my heart ached for her as well, because she was very kind towards Naomi and she suffered so much as Shiho Miyano.
I also liked that there was more spotlight on the agents, like Sena (Kir), Rei (Bourbon) and Akai.
The scene of Ran vs Pinga was great too. Now, I'm not a big fan of ShinRan, but I am fond of Ran as a person. I do think as a character she's a Mary Sue, but as a person, VERY ADMIRABLE. She's sweet, kind and the fight scene was quite intense. I also liked how in the second battle she lost, because I would like to see Pinga win a bit (because he has to have good fighting skills if he is in the criminal organisation, it would have been embarrassing if he lost to Ran).
Now onto the things I didn't really like:
The Detective Conan Movies with Black Organisation as a plot often felt the same. There was a threat, but nothing ever changed because the movies are not supposed to affect the canon manga plot. Hence, Gin and Vodka etc. will never know Shinichi and Shiho's identity as Conan and Ai. They will have their suspicions, but it will always have a roundabout way of them brushing it off. The highlighted characters in the movie like Curacao and Pinga are then killed off in the movie because they are not supposed to exist in the manga. That's why movies with the Black Organisation plot will always seem underwhelming, and they will not be as good as the actual manga plot arcs like Clash of the Red and Black arc.
Another plot hole I didn't like is that the plot or threat was kinda "eh". I was also baffled by how the Interpol's security system is so poor, they can get hacked in seconds and also get infiltrated in the Pacific Buoy so quickly. But you know, it's for the plot purposes, I guess.
The other scene that I really found unnecessary and that I predict that most people would also find it odd and out of place was the scene where Ai kissed Ran to "give back" the kiss Ai took from Conan. Like wtf was that. It's like the creators needed to reassure the audience that Ran was the main girl. It's like "ok guys, chill, we wanted CoAi to kiss, but end of the day we can't make them canon". We all know Ran is the main girl, but let us CoAi fans have this moment. It's like giving us a huge bait for us to bite, only to get it ruined by the last particular scene. There was also no built-up for Ai to feel guilty regarding the kiss. It was a very big surprise and there was no follow-up scene on why she did that, like "I really care for you but you love someone else and it will be selfish for me to do this" moment.
Ran was also understandably stunned that Ai (whom she would think is a 7-year-old child) would kiss her like that. It would have been a good moment for Shiho/Ran shippers, but it's not Shiho kissing Ran. I felt so bad for Ran in that moment because she seemed so confused and there was no explanation (if they could actually explain to her) and the scene was really out-of-place. Conan also didn't seem to question Ai about her odd actions on that part.
The last part I didn't like was that the end of it seemed abrupt. There was no scene where they were back in Tokyo and Conan/Ai having a last moment together. It sort of sucked that the last scene we saw was Ai kissing Ran, which ruined the momentum of CoAi. I was waiting for something in the end credits, but the end credits that rolled was the teaser for the next movie in 2024.
This is the end for the review. Of course these are my mere thoughts as someone who had watched DetCo since mid-2000s (but dropped it in 2017) and had liked CoAi since I was a kid. I'm not sure how the manga is so far since I dropped it at around ep 800, but I heard that there wasn't a lot of CoAi moments in canon now (let me know if it's otherwise, maybe I'll pick it up again).

“Was it all a lie?”
Blood, trickling into his eyes. Her body, pinned by the I-beam, working slowly free. The stars, visible through the hole in the roof. His arm, shaking. Her violet eyes fixed on him, shimmering and pained. His gun against her head. His voice, cracking.
She smiles and mouths something he can’t hear; his vision is blurry; he pulls the trigger.
-
Later, the PSB will find him in a trance by the debris and blood spray. Later, they’ll wrap him in a sheet that crinkles like foil and smells like nothing and ply him with hot chocolate. Later, he'll wake up in a hospital bed with floral curtains floating by his head. Later, in a white room with white fluorescent lights, he’ll tell the story to a nodding Furuya Rei: Eri and Kogoro Mouri, secret agents for a nefarious Organization. Their child born and trained to be the perfect agent, the ultimate bodyguard, the last defense.
Later, he’ll stand next to Furuya while the video of the fight plays in shades of green and gray. Her fist plunging into his stomach, her knee slamming into his face, his body smashing into the wall. His fumble for the gun. The old warehouse roof collapsing, the beam colliding with her back.
Later, he'll watch himself stagger over, push the muzzle of a gun to her temple. He’ll read her lips forming silent words in the grainy footage: I really did love you.

“As a schoolboy, [the first psychoanalyst in Japan, Heisaku] Kosawa had idolised both Shin Buddhism’s 13th-century founder, Shinran, and a modern proponent, the Shin priest Jokan Chikazumi. Chikazumi befriended Kosawa and became a teacher and role model to him. Nevertheless, while studying medicine at Tohoku Imperial University a few years later, Kosawa’s focus shifted to Freud. In a personal letter, written in faltering and oddly romantic German, he credited Freud with seeing into the human heart as clearly as he and his fellow students had learned to observe cells under a microscope. By comparison, Kosawa’s professor at Tohoku cut an unimpressive figure. In 1932, the young student begged money from an elder brother, left his professor behind (he was told never to come back) and set off for Europe to meet Freud face to face.
He didn’t receive quite the reception he’d hoped for. Meeting the elderly Freud at the famous house at Berggasse 19 in Vienna, a Japanese friend had to interpret for him. Freud himself advised Kosawa to find a local girlfriend to bring his German up to speed.
Language was not the only thing separating the two men. As far as the philosophical and religious implications of psychoanalysis were concerned, Freud strenuously disagreed with both Kosawa and with another major pioneer of psychoanalysis in Asia at the time, Girindrasekhar Bose in Calcutta. With only a couple of notable exceptions, the Freud circle treated religion as a purely psychodynamic and social phenomenon, reducible to inner drives and conflicts. They made their camp in the now-familiar territory of faith as wish-fulfillment, avoidance of reality, a means of keeping a lid on society, and the locus of a great deal of obsessive-compulsive behaviour.
For Bose and Kosawa, this merely served to highlight Freud’s parochialism: his lack of experience with non-European cultures and patients. As a matter of fact, Kosawa agreed with his hero that religion was connected with guilt. He just thought it involved guilt of a different type. Freud said that religion derived (both in historical time and in the life of each individual) from the need to assuage one’s fear of a father figure: really, it was a kind of ‘deferred obedience’. Kosawa hoped to persuade Freud that this placatory impulse gave rise to an inadequate religion, and that another sort of guilt was far more important.
He offered Freud a simple illustration. Imagine that a child drops a plate in the presence of his parents. When he seeks forgiveness from his father, the child is rebuffed. He experiences a pang of emotion linked both to fear of impending punishment and to anger and resentment at his father for his harsh reaction. This, according to Kosawa, approximates Freud’s understanding of guilt in the religious context. But then the child asks the mother for forgiveness — and receives it. The mother takes the child’s fearful and rebellious guilt and alchemises it into a ‘reparative guilt’: an overwhelming response to total, unconditional forgiveness. This latter reaction was, for Kosawa, a truly ‘religious state of mind’ and he saw it as the core of his own Shin tradition. Freud appeared unmoved, however. ‘I have received and read your essay and will save it,’ he wrote rather distantly. ‘You do not seem to intend to use it immediately.’ There is no evidence that he gave it another thought.”

Yukiko/Yusaku: Our Greatest Masterpiece
A/N: Okay, you know what? I give up! I have saved this one-shot like two years or something just to post it on Kudo Day, but like every other year before, I missed it again D: So I decided to give up and just post it. If I didn’t remember it this year, I have no idea how I would do it next either.
But a little backstory, because I love to share those. In the winter of 2020, I participated in the Finnish fanfic -server in a challenge named Fluff10, in which the idea was to write ten fluff fics. At first, I wanted to use only ShinRan, but then I decided to participate generally with Detective Conan since there are so many pairings I like. Well, it didn’t go very well: I got four of them written, and only one of those I published. To be honest, I have no idea what happened. But when I started to share my fics on Tumblr, I thought that I shouldn’t let them go in vain, so I decided that maybe with time, I should translate them and share them with you! Though this one has been ready for a long time, I have just waited until Kudo Day ^^’
But yeah, this is the third of those four fics that I wrote in Finnish for that challenge. The first one was Eternal Flame and the second one was Can I have this Dance. But even though this isn’t ShinRan, I hope you like this ❤
Our greatest Masterpiece
Summer started to move beside and fall slowly took over parks in Tokyo. Leaves and bushes lose their green colors and change into yellow, orange, or red ones. The wind started to be a little bit colder, but somehow it felt refreshing. And yet, the afternoon sun made the scenery very bright and beautiful. Looking at how leaves one by one lose their grips from the branches and make them hover around… It somehow looked beautiful, even romantic.
Under the big-brimmed hat, the woman admired the scenery through her sunglasses. On her red lips rested a dreamy smile. The view became more and more romantic when she observed those young couples who walked through the park hand in hand, parents in each other’s arms looking after their little children, and those older ones who had seen many things during their lives, just sitting there peacefully side by side, enjoying the day and each other warmth.
Maybe someday she and…
She felt how the baby stroller moved a little bit. Her eyes moved to look into the stroller where a little, well-dressed five months old boy moved a little bit before continuing his peaceful sleeping. That loving smile that had lost for a moment, came back on her lips when she observed her beautiful little offspring. Yukiko was actually a little surprised that her curious son had been patient enough to close his eyes to take a little daydream. Shinichi has a very calm nature, but curiosity? He got more than enough. Seeing the sky or his parents’ faces wasn’t enough anymore. At home, everything, that Shinichi couldn’t get close enough, interested him very much. He had already learned to turn from back to stomach and back and was dangerously fast learning how to crawl. Yukiko was already worried about what would happen when that boy learned to move on his own.
Yukiko bent a little to stroke the boy’s cheek with her fingers. She needed all her willpower so she wouldn’t take that sleeping child into her arms just that she could press his cheek against hers and yell to the world how little and cute and beautiful her little one was! Oh, she was so proud of her son! She wanted so much to stop everyone she met only to show them her little Shin-chan! She wanted too much to take him into her arms, squeeze him into a gentle hug, drown him in kisses, and babble about how loved he was.
But she didn’t dare to do it. The boy had finally closed his eyes and fallen asleep, and that was an achievement in itself. Instead of sleeping, Shinichi was much more interested to examine and learn about the world around him. He wanted to touch and taste everything that he saw and could grab with his little fingers. Whatever his parents were doing, those bright blue eyes were glued to them. He wanted to see, wanted to know, and if they didn’t show him, he let out a scream only to get their attention, to make them show him what they were doing or what they were holding.
“Ah, you have got Shinichi to sleep?”
Yukiko took away her hand before ripping her eyes away from the boy. She turned to look at the young, dark-haired man who walked closer to her in his long, light brown jacket. Both of his hands were in his pockets, and on his armpit was some kind of book, whose name Yukiko couldn’t see. She met his dark eyes and felt so happy that her husband was finally back.
“Yu-chan!” she shouted shrilly, maybe more loud than she meant to. Fast she covered her mouth with a hand and glanced at the boy, but Shinichi seemed still sleeping without caring about a loud sound. With relief, she let her hand drop and turned back to look at her husband. “What took you so long?” she asked and decided to roast him a little bit. “I started to believe that you had abandoned me already!”
A man let out a soft laugh. He took his left arm away from the pocket and wrapped it around Yukiko, making her come a little closer. Yukiko leaned against him, feeling how Yusaku’s hand went to rest on her waist. “Why would I abandon my beautiful wife and little son?”
Yukiko felt a blush on her cheeks but decided to still be a little offended. “How do I know if some unlucky young, beautiful girl has taken you with her.”
Yusaku let out a laugh, making Yukiko look at him. “But how is that possible?” he asked with a smile and dark eyes met her. “I already got Japanese youngest and the most beautiful wife.” Yukiko felt her cheeks burning more when the man came a little closer his eyes twinkling. “No one can’t beat you.”
His lips touched Yukiko’s reddish cheek. Yukiko smiled. She turned her face a little bit, enough that she could press her lips against Yusaku’s and exchange a loving kiss. She grabbed the back of his jacket, ensuring he couldn’t leave – like he was even doing that.
Then they moved away from the kiss and pressed their foreheads against each other. Yukiko opened her eyes, looking straight into those familiar, dark ones. She wouldn’t ever get tired of looking at them…
“You know I love you?”
She felt how her heart made a somersault. She let go of his jacket and raised her hand to touch his cheek to stroke it. “Love you too”, she answered gently before leaning a little closer to steal one kiss, then another…
A little sound from the baby made them move away from each other. Both of them looked in the baby stroller where their little offspring made sounds at the same time while he was moving. For a while, he looked like searching for a better position to be before stopping and calming down. Both parents waited for a while, but when the boy didn’t open his eyes, Yusaku moved a little bit away from his wife.
“We should probably continue our walk”, he said, taking that book from his right armpit. Yukiko tried to see the name of it while Yusaku looked at the clock on his left wrist. “I have a feeling that Shinichi is going to wake up soon and be hungry.”
“Probably”, Yukiko answered and observed how Yusaku put the book into the stroller beside Shinichi’s little feet. For fast she could see the name of the book and the author before Shinichi moved his feet and hid part of it. “Is that your new book?” she asked and turned to look at her husband who was looking at their son with a soft expression. “I didn’t know they were printing it already!”
“That was only a specimen”, he answered a little absently before he straightened himself and looked at his wife with a smile. “However, they said it would be ready to be sold after two weeks.”
Yukiko’s smile widened. “That’s wonderful, Yu-chan!” she chirped happily and pressed a new kiss on his cheek. “It’s going to be your greatest masterpiece!”
“No, it won’t”, Yusaku answered, making Yukiko’s smile disappear. Yet, the man smiled and pressed a kiss on her lips before turning to look at their son. “Mine… No, our greatest masterpiece exists already.”
Yukiko stared at him for a moment before following his gaze to the baby stroller. For a moment she stared at sleeping Shinichi before she started to smile gently, feeling love, happiness, and pride. Then she let out a laugh and pressed closer into Yusaku’s arms. “You’re right”, she agreed. “He definitely is.”

coai for the ship bingo?
Tumblr media
Man I had to dig to find this bingo card but I found it!
I have really, really, really, complicated feelings about this ship. Part of it is I ship both of them with other people first (my prefered pairing for the Cone is actually a polycule with Heiji, Ran, and Kazuha), but when it comes to ShinRan vs CoAi I actually like the dynamic of CoAi better! BUT I don't ship it because the idea of having a lesbian Shiho is very very very very very very dear to me. I need my tiny child to have been confused about romance because dating guys really doesn't sound interesting but everyone dates them and so I guess I like him but you get the picture. Anyways that the short answer I won't write the three page essay (but I could).
Sorry for the very late reply!!

A Priest and His Disciples (by Hyakuzo Kurata): Book review
Tumblr media
Shinran(親鸞)
The play consists of six acts, and the two characters, Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect, and Yuien, who served him well, appear throughout the play. The age difference is just 50 years old, and it feels like the relationship between a grandfather and a grandson. Shinran will live to be 90 years old, but Yuien will die when he is 40 years old and will be reborn in the Pure Land. It seems that the process up to that point was a very difficult road.
In the first place, the teachings of Honen (Shinran) are based on Amida Nyorai's wish that ``If you do not realize that you are an evil person and save all the ``villains'' who seek your salvation, you will not become a Buddha. And since Amida Nyorai has already attained Buddhahood, even the wicked are saved.” There is no such thing as a perfect human being, and from the perspective of a perfect Tathagata, everyone is the same villain. Here lies the secret of the “absolute power of others” of the Jodo sect and the Jodo Shin sect.
By the way, even if Shinran and Yuien entered the path of faith, their worldly desires would never go away.
In the case of Yuien, when he was 25 years old and in his prime, he had an unforgiving love affair with a 16-year-old courtesan, Kaede. When the senior monks notice this, they accuse Yuien of saying that love is forbidden and ask Shinran to banish him from the temple. This attitude was as ruthless as the Pharisees of Christianity.
Shinran's answer to this was, ``It is true that Yuien may be a bad person. It is because he is a bad person that he is here.” Although it violated the general precepts of Buddhism, it was a reasonable judgment in terms of the doctrine of the Pure Land Gate.
Time passes further, and Shinran is 90 years old and is on his deathbed. Yuien is also 40 years old, married to him "Kaede" named "Katsunobu", and she has two cute children. For Shinran, the last worldly desire in this world was Zenran, the child he had when he was in exile. Zenran liked debauchery and was a do-it-yourself son, so Shinran severed the relationship between parent and child. However, after meeting him at the end of his life, Shinran will leave this world and go to the Pure Land.

Alright! First Question is hmm.. What's your favourite episode Arc?
Mine would have to be the Desperate Revival, Especially the Cave part. The detective boys finding the correct path on their own and unleashing the bats on the guard, Smart mini detectives <3 (Also gotta love the Conan Whump)
And the rest of the arc is great too- Haibara visiting Conan in the hospital and scaring him, using the temporary antidote for the first time, Heiji pretending to be Shinichi and lasting for like 3 seconds, Shinichi's reveal as the black Knight, and the Shinran angst at the end </3
- 💚
Hello anon!!! Thanks for the question, as I love receiving them! Sometimes I forget to answer them and I apologize! (>__<; )
I have to agree that the Desperate Revival is one of my favorite arcs as well! Shinichi finally being his teen self and still acting odd and child like! The hospital scenes and of course my favorite - Shinichi asking Ran to hold his hand when they cross the street hehe!
I also really really enjoyed Kir's arc! (Eps 425 to 508) It was very interesting and the episodes that took place in the hospitals were very suspenseful and interesting! We also got introduced to Conan and Akai's dynamic which was super good, especially since it was in the older style of animation!
It also drove me crazy with Conan's guilt when Akai spoke of Akemi, as he saw her last moments before her death. Super intriguing!
Thanks for the question anon, that's all I can remember off the top of my head. I'm glad we both share the preference for The Dark Revival as well! (^__^) 💓

Ok, I know this song has been out for 2 years now, but the lyrics just bring out that ShinRan vibes to me. The lyrics are about a girl who wanted her boyfriend to return home while the boyfriend was going off to his little fun time. And it is kinda similar to Shinichi and Ran but instead of Shinichi going off to have his own time, he goes shrunk and becomes a child while faking he is on a case again. I did watch an amv that took the song and added it to Detective Conan's scenes. This song is really good, I highly recommended you guys go and listen to it, it's a Vietnamese song but it had English subtitles too, the video itself even references Disney princesses too.

Whether it's entertainment, travel, beauty, fashion, food, dating, popularity, shopping, business, ideas, or advertising, money is the first consideration.
Troubles, sickness, mortgage, overwork, stress, shame, and humiliation could be all because of lack of money.
"If only I had money, if only I had money" , the world is filled with people who muttered to themselves as if it were an incantation.
----------
Sakyamuni Buddha taught that humans live a life headed for death.
He taught that all people are on a small boat headed downstream on a rapidly-moving river, at the end of which is the waterfall of death.
So what happens when we fall down that waterfall? We don’t know our destination: This is the crucial matter of the afterlife.
Regarding the crucial matter of the afterlife, Master Rennyo said as follows:
“At the moment of death, nothing one has previously relied on, whether wife and child or money and treasure, will accompany one. At the end of the mountain road of death, one must cross the river all alone.”
This is the crucial matter of the afterlife taught of in Buddhism. It is the fundamental source of life’s suffering.
Buddhism, the teachings of Buddha, lead you to instantaneously resolve ‘life’s suffering’ and attain true happiness. Buddhism urges us to listen intently to Amida’s Vow, for this Vow is genuine, telling us to hurry to do so because we never know when we might die.
“Devote yourselves to serious listening (to Buddhism), for whether you board (attain true happiness) or not depends on this”:
This is what Sakyamuni, Master Shinran, and Master Rennyo made clear.
There will come a time when it will be made crystal clear to you that the happiness Amida promised really does exist, so listen with all seriousness to Buddhism until then.

Detective Conan : Next Generation
Tumblr media
HeiZuha Children
It’s been over three years and my DC headcanons for the ‘Next Generation’returned,so... I have to many headcanons for DC Characters as parents and their kids.. Always excited to hear other dc headcanons by the way <3 “Come on ! Just reply already...”, she sighed as none of her childhood friends seemed to have time to look up their chat group. Feeling defeated Yume hid her phone under her pillow and went for a walk in the neighborhood since there was nothing else to do. It took Yume only some minutes to realize that it was way too hot outside. But the summers in Osaka were always like that. Sadly. I feel like I’m melting... Maybe I should pay Kazuki a visit..? Knowing her older brother he is probably at the school gym perfecting his kendo skills..not that there was any serious competition for the reigning ace of Osaka’s strongest high school kendo team. Why must life be so unfair ? If there was one thing Yume Hattori didn’t inherited from her family it was definitely their astonishing atlethic abilities. She wouldn’t be so mad, if she could at least perform the basics of aikido or kendo, but no.. she was a hopeless case. Honoka is most likely with him anyway.. Without wasting a second thought on it, Yume headed back to her home and tried not to look as if she was dying while feeling the humid air basically punch her whole body. These two.. Being already quite popular in middle school it took not long before one of Kazuki’s friends introduced him to Honoka Ujo, a new student that would not only go to the same class as him, but also live right in his neighborhood.
“Finally..”, out of breath Yume striped off her shoes and welcomed the refreshing temperature inside the house. “Is that you, Yume ?” “..Ah, Obaa-chan you’re already back from your visit to the museum ?” Preparing something in the kitchen her grandma looked effortless as always. “I am...Although I was invited to a round of cards by some other members of my book club, but then I thought I also could keep you company instead, so here I am.. “, responded Shizuka Hattori with a warm smile on her lips. Oh dear..am I that pitiful ? Sure it wasn’t unusual for Yume to be the only one at home while everyone else was at work or in her grandma and brother’s case out with friends. If her whole friend group would not live in Tokyo things would be quite different. Also if her stubborn dad and grandpas would allow her to help solve murder ca- There was no point in getting mad over that right now. “I appreciate the thought Obaa-chan ~ I’m just going to change my clothes quickly !” “Damnit..”, she whispered when see saw that nobody replied to her message. Think Yume, think... Alright, this could work ! Realizing what time it already was, she hastily picked a summer dress her grandma would approve of ,put it on and packed a small bag. Making sure that she has not forgotten anything, Yume joined her grandma in the kitchen who was unlike her not slightly out of breath. “ Change of plans, Obaa-chan ! Takumi invited me to spend the weekend in Tokyo, so let’s just pack this here”, she announced while packing the fruit sandwiches in some wooden lunchboxes “ And then I can accompany you to Iwasa-san on my way to the train station. She and the other members will surely be delighted by your tasteful treats ~”
“It’s not safe to ride a train by yourself, Yume. I would feel much better if you would let Kazuki go with you..”, her grandma explained while they were already on their way to Iwasa’s home right across the Osaka Station. “Don’t worry, Obaa-chan~ It’s not a long ride and you can reach me by phone any time !” Shizuka Hattori still wasn’t fully convinced. “Maybe I should check in with your parents before letting you go” Crap...No..Arghh.. I don’t have time for that..there has to be something else I can argue wi- There were times were life did treat Yume quite well. Reaching the Iwasa household they were welcomed by Daisuke Otaki who was about to leave. As expected of Daisuke Otaki he not only politely greeted them, but also brought their lunchboxes to the dining room. “Domo arigato Daisuke-kun”, replied Yume’s grandmother while sliding into her slippers from home as the young man was about to leave for real now. Now or never ! “Say Daisuke-kun you wouldn’t mind if we went to Tokyo together ,now would you ? I mean you probably are on your way there for your weekly ‘business meetings’ anyway so..” There was nothing in the way of Yume’s trip to Tokyo now. Because of his uncle Goro Otaki her companion was a family friend, so her grandma would certainly agree of the idea. And there was no way Daisuke could talk himself out of the situation. He was way too afraid that Yume would expose his secret regarding his weekly ‘business meetings’, not that she would ever really do that, but he didn’t want to take any risk. As soon as they sat done Yume reached into her bag and fished out her phone. Still nothing. After writing a second message announcing her suprise visit, she called Takumi to make sure he knew about his part in her plan. It took a while before Yume got hold of him. “I’m really sorry for not answering sooner, but Obaa-chan dragged me to a casting for a commercial and it’s been-” “Don’t worry about it ! ....Please don’t be mad, but I may be on my way to Tokyo right now and might have indicated that you have invited me there for the weekend..” “...” “ I already informed Hikaru and Mamoru over our chat group about my visit, they will surely read it ...sooner or later, but just so you know if you or your parents would get a call from someone of my family..” “Which will be definitely the case” “ Yeah..I don’t know why they are recently so overprotective..” “It’s not like our families attract dead bodies or serial killers..” A small giggle escaped Daisuke’s mouth who was reading a magazin. Yume couldn’t hold back a smile herself. “Totally not..So, see you in Tokyo ?” “You’re lucky that I have such a big heart ~ I will try to call Hikaru later - OHH..Obaa-chan looks mad..Have to go- !”
Finishing her book it just came in handy that they reached their destination. “Arigato Daisuke-kun for helping me out today”, said Yume as they walked out of the train station. Daisuke just waved aside her gratitude. He probably feels like I used him..which I technically kind of did “It’s nothing, glad I could help you”, he replied politely . “Your friends will pick you up soon ?” Yume nodded and tried to think about something that she could say that would make Daisuke less mad at her. But before Yume could even blink, Daisuke said goodbye and disappeared in the crowd. That went well.. She quickly wrote her grandma a message that she arrived in Tokyo and put her phone back in her bag. With a big smile on her face Yume dived into the ocean of people. This is going to be such a fun weekend ! Yume couldn’t know at that time that this weekend would be special...

I remember having a dream where my partner went speechless when I screamed at him that I feel unsafe everywhere I go, that I feel eyes on my back drilling into my head. He tried to tell me that he would protect me but I shouted back that we both knew if it were between me and the love of his life, it would never be me.

Dark Side Of The Rising Sun Part 1
Yo what’s up!
Tumblr media
After the success of my previous post, I’ve decided to bring a follow up where I talk about the many dysfunctions and issues facing Japan that I’ve learned in my research. Detective Conan often shows the criminal justice system of Japan in a positive light while in reality it has many issues due to the culture.
Now let me make this clear: Japan has many great things about itself that should never be ignored. However, these are real flaws that have or need to be addressed with many Japanese also recognizing them as problems.
Now I had to split this into parts as this is rather ungainly to put it all at once. If you have any questions please ask and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Tumblr media
 Suicide
Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world with about 15.2 deaths per 100,000 people.
This is due to many factors such as Suicide not being considered a sin as well as historical connotations of it being a honorable way to go.
It is also considered a act of revenge, apology, and protest.
It is mostly caused today by factors such as unemployment, alienation and intense social pressure.
Japanese society is overall tolerant of Suicide but this is changing in recent times.
Another factor is the need for acceptance over individuality.
People with mental illness are often discriminated against, stopping potential help.
Internet Suicide Clubs where anonymous people make/plan suicide pacts and commit group suicide are a major issue.
If you kill yourself via Shinkansen, your family will be fined heavily. It is also the cause of half of the train delays and referred to as a human incident.
Tall buildings have mandatory suicide fences to prevent people from jumping off. When they succeed, they take off their shoes before hand.
It is common for suicidal people to take insurance policies and wait a year or two to go through with it so their families would be okay.
Ikka Shinju or family suicides are when the entire family kills themselves together due to Asian views of the family. When the parents kill their children before themselves, this is called Muri-Shinju or murder suicides.
Oyaku Shinju or parent-child suicide are where a single parent kill their children along with themselves.
Drownings, overdoses, hangings, and jumping off places are the most common form of suicide.
Tumblr media
Judiciary
Traditionally, the judge is hated more then the lawyer is in the west as the Judge is often viewed as a symbol of the Japanese nobility judging the common man.
If you are sent to trial, you are certain to be convicted regardless of innocence due to the countries 99% conviction rate. (Really makes Eri’s work more awesome and badass doesn’t it?)
The Japanese supreme court is one of the most conservative in the world, rarely ruling against issues that are blatantly unconstitutional and anti human rights. As a result, one of the more positive proposals for amendments of the Constitution is the creation of a separate Constitutional Court.
If you are sent to death row, you will never be told in advance when you are going to die.
Culturally, once arrested the person is automatically considered guilty.
Police are often reluctant to overturn convictions as they insist that only guilty are arrested and convicted.
The law when a child is considered criminally responsible is 14.
Judges are often pressured into making convictions as their careers are negatively affected by a not guilty verdict.
Prosecutors are given the choice not to pursue a case regardless of sufficient evidence.
Prisoners in Japan, while somewhat treated better then much of the world due to it’s focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment, have to follow strict military style regulations from minor things such as being forced to fold the bed, or to wash your face to more draconian measures such being beaten if you don’t march or sit the wrong way.
In turn, many have inadequate access to medical care as they don’t have many options for their healthcare.
It can take months or years before you are tried, meaning that a right to a speedy trial is completely nonexistent.
“Periods of reflection” where inmates are forced to be handcuffed, gagged and placed in solitary, are often not recorded by the warden.
Foreigners are forced to speak and write in Japanese.
Tumblr media
Drug Use
It is considered vastly socially unacceptable to do narcotics in Japan.
Most drug addicts are even considered to be not human.
If a celebrity is caught doing drugs, his career is automatically fucked and he is blacklisted from the industry, as well as erased from current projects.
The most commonly sold drug is methamphetamine. This started after World War II due to Meth being legal for soldiers to consume in order to stay up late on petrol as well as from occupying Americans. After the was, it became a huge epidemic for 12 years.
Marijuana use has risen among youth. Despite it having little danger as well as medicinal uses, it is widely considered evil, with the law having no tolerance.
Overall, Japan has little drug use compared to the rest of the world due to the cultural taboo and strict laws. However, there are signs that it is being vastly under counted,
Most illicit drugs are imported from Taiwan and South Korea due to it being near impossible to grow it natively but it is becoming increasingly hard to do so.
Drugs overdoses are criminally under diagnosed.
Epidemics often occur due to low periods of economic growth and recessions. (Examples include the postwar period, the 70′s, and the Lost Decade after the Bubble Economy burst in 1989)
It is common for your family or doctor to call the police once you admit there is a problem. Then you are forced to take a urine sample and if it tests positive you are immediately arrested.
A lot of doctors open pharmacies to add to their income. As a result, many oversubscribe prescription drugs.
Hypocritically, Alcoholism is completely tolerated and not treated as a addiction due to alcohol being considering purifying in Shinto, a cure, and Japan having a intense drinking culture.
Tumblr media
Child Abuse
For the most part, physical child abuse is considered a private issue and often ignored. While things are slowly getting better, Japan still has a long way to go. (Imagine if Kogoro did what he did to Conan in the west. Child services would be on him like a fly swatter.)
Child services often return the children to their parents even if they say their abusing them as the counseling centers need the parents to admit to their abuse.
It is a complete myth that Japan’s age of consent is 13. That is only the lowest one could set it. Most prefectures are set at 16 or higher. In turn, child molestation of those under 12 is heavily punished. However while vaginal rape of children is illegal, basically just about everything else as long as it’s statutory is basically alright.
Enjo Kosai or compensated dating is the practice of Teenage Girls to go on dates with older men in exchange for money and gifts. While not necessarily always leading to prostitution is treated as such and the girls are often blamed if they are hurt in the process.
Child sex trafficking of migrants is a serious issue and they are often treated as criminals and sent home without counseling.
Adoption of children is rare and frowned upon so many of them have to gro up in centers.
Children of unmarried couples are discriminated against due to the violation of the traditional Ie system and do not have the same protections or privileges of married couples because of its Koseki system.
Men are not obligated to pay child support and it’s near impossible to get them to legally as they can simply hide their finances by not telling them. Plus only one person can be named on the custody sheet.
Child Pornography was effectively decriminalized until 2014. No seriously.
Sexual Harassment/Assault
Domestic violence victims are disabused from coming forward due to the idea of bringing shame to their family.
Stalking cases are rarely taken seriously by the police
OH THERE”S WAY MORE BUT THIS LIST IS DARK ENOUGH SO LET”S SAVE THIS FOR A LATER DATE.
Working Conditions
Idols are heavily exploited and forced to follow strict rules such as having no social life, banned from having a boyfriend, etc. This is because they are supposed to sell a image of innocence and be there exclusively for their fans.
Anime creators are often forced to work long hours with little pay. This has resulted in a slump in the industry with very few new hires so they are forced to rely on the older animators whose health may fail sooner rather then later.
Funds are rarely given to films with artistic intent or that are political in nature, resulting the film industry suffering compared to the more internationally regarded South Korea.
Tumblr media
Police Corruption
Until recently, Japanese police would work with organized crime to lower crime. The only reason they stopped was not out of concern for the everyday citizen but because they were embarrassed by the Yakuza when they began to show up more publically.
The media is often laughably compliant to the police, with they rarely offering a critical lens.
Police have undue influence on the Pachiko industry, with many retired officers being hired as muscle and for advice.
It is quite common for officers to embezzle from their slush funds.
In a effort to cover up crime, police often refuse to investigate mysterious or suspicious deaths, preferring to label them as accidents or suicide.
Police are often anti migrant and sexist to a fault.
It is neigh impossible to get a wiretap going due to rigid privacy laws.
Even the police can’t fire weapons as you need approval to even loose your gun so many officers have never fired a bullet.
Government Incompetence/Corruption
Voter Apathy is super high, with many elections having hilariously low turnout.
Many politicians have Yakuza connections, with the gang members serving as bodyguards and canvassing for votes.
Votes in the countryside are worth two compared to urban ones.
A lot of politicians are completely out of touch and constantly have to resign for gaffes (racism, sexism, historical revisionism, etc.)
Political acts are based on group consensus so it can take a long time to get meaningful reform done.
Criticism and debate is ironically frowned upon, with open criticism within a party being effectively banned.
Cronyism is common. While for the most part Japanese politics is based on expertise, many politicians are awarded ministries based on their support for the leader.
The NHK (Japanese version of the BBC) is largely neutral and free but the current Japanese government can dictate what it is to focus on temporarily.
Press Clubs are often given exclusive access to interviews and information from the government, so they get biased preferential treatment.
Okay I guess the point of this list is to bring attention to these issues and expand the opportunities of where to go when it comes to dark DC fanfiction. Don’t worry, here’s a cute Conan to make you smile!

A weird shinran ficlet idea I’ve been playing around with;
Say Vermouth was a little more ruthless, but still fiercely protective over Shinichi and Ran. She thinks Japan will never be safe for Shinichi, he’s made an enemy of its most powerful man after all, but of course she knows Shinichi would never leave Ran, and she’d rather keep watch over Ran anyway. So she spirits them away, somehow erasing their memories in the process (enforced amnesia? another weird drug? clearly, When Pandora’s Box is Opened is still on my mind).
In her mind, it doesn’t matter that they’d be leaving their families, that she’d be taking Shinichi away from her dear friend Yukiko, as long as they have each other, they’d be fine, and they’re her favorites after all.
In the grand scheme of things, the disappearance of two high school sweethearts probably doesn’t mean much, even if one of them happened to be famous. Others whisper, they probably eloped or something. But the ones who know the truth are shattered. Yukiko and Yuusaku at least know that Vermouth would never kill Shinichi, but Kogorou and Eri don’t even have that comfort. Sonoko breaks down. Haibara blames herself. Intelligence agencies from three countries: UK, US, and Japan mobilize to find them, and for once Yuusaku’s calm fails him, since despite all his brilliance, he still can’t find them. Vermouth’s a master of disguise after all, and with no more ties to the organization, she’s like a ghost.
Five years pass by just like that. Kaitou Kid happened to be doing a heist in New York, but is apparently foiled by a rookie cop in the force, someone who saw through his every trick, and an intense feeling of de ja vu overwhelms him. So he does a little bit of investigating.
Osakan police detective Hattori Heiji suddenly finds one day, a picture on his desk. The moment he sees it, he collapses on his chair. There’s no note or name indicating who it’s from, just an address on the back, in New York. He doesn’t get to the airport fast enough, doesn’t even go home to pack or anything. He can’t risk bringing Kazuha, because what if it’s just nothing...
He does have the presence of mind to try to contact as many people involved in the five year-long search effort, but he gets there first.
He can’t even knock. But the door opens, and it reveals a handsome Japanese couple. A bit older, with lines on their faces, but still the same face of his best friend and the woman he loves. For Heiji, it’s like seeing ghosts. But what’s worse is the lack of recognition on either of their faces. In an instant, he notices the confused politeness, the bands on both ring fingers, and a toddler’s cry from the inside.
The man asks for his name. Voice strangled, he introduces himself as Hattori Heiji from the Osakan Police Force. Thinking on his feet and remembering the news a while back, he comes up with a bogus story of a case he’d been handling crossing over the NYPD’s jurisdiction, that of a certain Japanese phantom thief. He’d been told to go here, to one of their best detectives, to discuss the case. Heiji surprises himself. He’d always sucked at lying in the past.
The sheepish gestures were still the same. Heiji thinks he might actually cry. The woman has now picked up the crying toddler and is rocking him to sleep. The man motions for the child, ‘I’ll take care of Conan. You go on ahead. Isn’t the audition for that Broadway musical today?’
Conan. Of course that would be his name. Heiji laughs a hysterical laugh or else he really would cry.
The couple looks at him strangely, but the man nonetheless introduces himself and his wife. Heiji wants to shout. Why are you introducing yourself? I know you, the both of you. You’re my best friend! Do you know how long we’ve been looking? But he holds it in. He made it this far, he won’t break now.
‘This is Rachel. I’m Jimmy. Jimmy Vineyard. It’s nice to meet you Detective Hattori.’
