"Are you alright? Worried!!"

You tilt your head to look up at Medibot, wondering what could possibly have him worried.

"Yeah, I'm all good." You turn your eyes back to the screen ahead.

"...I am not reassured."

You were lying down on a pillow placed atop where Medibot's lap would be- if he had one. You were introducing him to an animated movie. A studio Ghibli movie, in fact; it seemed right up his alley, and he had seemed to be enjoying it- up until his last comment.

You tear your eyes from the screen once again.

"I've seriously got no idea what you're talking about, what makes you think I'm-"

"-Your heartbeat. It is beating at an unusual pace."

You sat stunned for a moment. You shouldn't be too surprised that the Medic Robot had noticed of all people- but you didn't figure it was that big of a deal.

"Apologies for interrupting you-"

there was slight guilt in his voice, which quickly turned to panic with his next phrase:

"It is only getting faster! I believe you need medical attention!!"

Then, it clicked.

"Ah.." You kept your composure, which calmed him… until your cheeks started tinting pink out of embarrassment, another sign of possible sickness, to Medibot. He was quick to address this:

"You are sick!! Panicked!! You are in need of-"

You quickly sat up and paused the movie, facing Medibot and asking for him to calm down and give you his full attention.

"Hey, I'm completely alright. It's just… a weird thing that human bodies do sometimes."

"Why would sickness symptoms show when there is no sickness? Confused!!"

You chewed on the inside of your cheek for a moment. How could you explain this?

"It's- it just means that I enjoy being around you, is all. You bring me joy."

You could have sworn he blue screened for a moment before tapping his hands together, a nervous stim of his that you've noticed.

"Ah. Human heartbeats quicken when excited, if I remember correctly. Is it the same thing? Curious!!"

"...Yeah, basically."

You let out a relieved sigh. He didn't have to learn about complicated human feelings just yet- all he had to know was that you two were friends, and you enjoyed hanging out.

Generative "AI", American copyright, and fanworks

Many folks have questions about what generative "AI" tools mean for copyright - and fanworks like fanfic and fanart. I've compiled here a list of basic reading on the status of fanworks in the copyright world and what AI is, as well as an evolving list of legal coverage of machine-made works.

The short and dirty:

Fanworks are not legally derivative, they are transformative, which you might recognize from the name of Ao3's parent org the Organization for Transformative Works. Generative "AI" content is derivative, which is not legally allowed without proper licensing. Fanfiction and AI output aren't the same thing, but corporations would like you to think so. They'd like you to think anything if it meant they could once again gain the momentum to change copyright law in their favor, whether that meant scrapping it or expanding it to their tastes. The articles I include can hopefully help elaborate.

The basics of fanwork and copyright law:

Fanworks rely on fulfilling the transformative portion of the fair use test in copyright law. They also shouldn't make money, in order to not compete with the original work.

What is the "AI" we keep hearing about anyway?

Statistics, machine learning, and artifical intelligence are the same thing - but "AI" rakes in more cash and acclaim

Generative AI is derivative and can only create what it has been fed, which perpetuates social ills but also illustrates what it really is - not human "intelligence", but a statistical machine

For example, fanfiction generated by a number of the free big name tools somehow manages to be straight and confusingly narrated

Why are corporations so invested in generative AI? AI in general?

An interview with an AI engineer who uses AI to generate endless patent applications - to profit from ideas before they are even invented

If corporations all use the same AI to fix housing prices as a cartel, they want the feds to agree its the machine's fault, not theirs

Even if generative AI improves to the point that it is totally unbiased and can write just as well as a human, it is still a machine. A tool, not a person. Corporations will try to scapegoat it by confusing the conversation.

What are any rise fanfic recs that you have?

I got so excited for this ask. Okay so, I'm not going to recommend things with over 1k kudos on Ao3, because they're easy to find. 'Tale of Spirits', 'Sorry, Teenage Mutant What Now', 'Ronin Discord Admin', etc. (I would also LOVE to rec things besides RoTTMNT if anyone is interested...) But here's one's I've reread MULTIPLE times.

tried to grow up good by @sroloc--elbisivni Absolutely banger of a Casey Jones fic. The pinnacle of Casey Jones fics. It's the second in the series, and the first one is very good as well, but this one reads just fine as a stand-alone. Casey Jones Jr. stealing cars is just very near and dear to me.

The Whispering Forest and Other Tales ALSO by @sroloc--elbisivni, as well as Waywayrdwitchcat. (If they have a tumblr someone let me know please.) I NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS FIC SERIES. it's probably my favorite ROTTMNT fic series of all time. (I'm going to say that a lot in this list but it's all true.) The whole series is absolutely wonderful, spooky, romantic, and set in feudal era Japan in a world similar to the Usagi Yojimbo comics. If you're worried about not knowing Usagi Yojimbo comics, don't be. I didn't and had no trouble following along; it provides all the context you need, and blends it with the ROTTMNT universe anyway.

BuzzfeedUnsolved: The Strange Disappearance of Lou Jitsu Self explanatory, a fic in a Buzzfeed Unsolved True Crime episode format. Hilarious, and the author did a FANTASTIC job of capturing what I love about cheesy crime youtube. Lighthearted and short!

Things That Ought To Crawl by @thisonesforturtles Sep!Donnie AU, wonderful Draxum adjusting to rehabilitating effectively completely feral and very young Donnie who doesn't remember much, and a lot of very cool and incredibly smart mystical head canons. Hugin and Munin are absolutely wonderful in this as well. It actually takes the idea of what a feral child growing alone would result in, and digs into it. (Not completed)

No Rest For The Weary by @plothooksinc POST MOVIE FIC probably my all time favorite post movie fic actually. THIS HAS EVERYTHING. I won't say anything about it because most of the twists and turns are so interesting I don't want to ruin them. Mind the tags though! (Not completed)

And LASTLY Empathy is Learned by @alicat54c If you enjoyed LSoW, you'd enjoy this but in a different way I think! I don't want to spoil too much, but it has a lot of cute fluff, turtley nonsense, and little April O'Neil. (Not completed, locked to AO3 users)

Who did you fell for first? Alan or Snape or Alan as Snape? Like did you fall for Snape first from the books or did you fall for Alan Rickman playing Snape? Orrr did you already like Alan before he even played Snape? This is such a weird and random question I'm sorry 😭

Cause for the longest time, Snape was my guilty crush. I've always liked him and read fanfics about him having a daughter. When asked I always say I like him as a father figure but as time pass and as I grew older and found more people who loves him the more I accept that I really love that old (not so old) bat lol. Having accepted that made me realize how I also love Alan himself 😩. Like I try to watch every movie he was in, even if the plot doesn't interest me at all. Just seeing him on screen makes me smile. Too bad I only started being a fan when he passed :((

I'm not going to lie pals, I've been struggling with my relationship/my place in the fanfic writing world. I think with how emotionally and mentally tasking the fics I wrote in 2023 were has drained me from wanting to write fics for the foreseeable future.

In other words, ya girl is struggling.

So in my way to reconnect with my love for fic writing, I've been rereading my fics bit by bit! This month, I've been slowly rereading my dwd fix-it fic and its sequel.

Why I love them:

When I decided to write a Don't Worry Darling fix-it fic, I was doing my best to fill in every plot hole and answer every question I already had about the movie. I was thrilled to have finished Don't Worry, Darling the day the movie premiered in the US and I LOVE the twisty ending I gave it. PS. I was quite literally writing this fic the same day it was posted because I was so determined to post it on Sep 23rd.

But I also knew that I wanted to write more in that world and continue answering questions I had beyond what the movie showed which is how Come Back, My Love was created. I started CMBL and either wrote, edited, or planned out my first 100k fic from April 1st 2023 - October 7th 2023. Which is a long ass time to be working on a fic. The only time I took a break was when I was on vacation for a week.

I'm incredibly proud of those two fics and what I accomplished with them.

If you're a fic writer out there reading this, I hope this encourages you to find the things you love about your writing if you're struggling with your own place in fic writing. 💗

Admin Michelle here, and I am once again (mostly) functional after my meltdown about Jensen at the DC con last weekend. I have occasional wibbles, still, when I see photos of him with that damn kazoo in his mouth, but otherwise I'm back to normal.

Fishing For Treasures weekend at the @fanficocean. This weekend is FFT weekend over at the Ocean, and this month's theme is AU fics! Head on over there to read some excellent AU fics from other fandoms. Here at the Pond, we will be celebrating on the 21st and 22nd. Admin Marie will be hosting a rewatch of SPN! This was just announced a little while ago, but we've been excited about this idea since Marie first mentioned it. Everyone will watch on their own time, and then we'll get together to discuss the episodes and find inspiration for fanfics! The first chat is scheduled for next weekend! Competitive Writing Sprints with Manta Ray Dean! After the Rewatch chat with Marie, Dean will be hosting writing sprints in the Discord server. Rumor has it, these sprints might be centered around ideas that come up during the Rewatch chat! We can't wait to see what everyone writes!

How? Sign up here!You will be able to give several prompts (different types of prompts, too! Music, scenarios, one word prompts…) and you will, of course, receive several prompts ^_^

Your job? Use at least one of these prompts to create at least one fanwork! You can combine several prompts in one work, use the same prompt for several works… The one hard and fast rule is to respect your giftee’s squicks!

Please get in touch with your giftee anonymously if only to let them know someone is creating something for them, and of course if you have any question :-)

What types of fanwork? Here’s what you can do: Gifsets (6 gifs min), Fanfic (1,000 words min), Fanmix (6 songs + cover min), Fanvid (1 minute long min), Graphics / Fanart, needle art, podfic.

What’s the timeline? Signups until Sep 4 (your time zone is fine), prompts sent around a day or two after that (depending on your time zone), fanworks due OCT 28 in the AO3 collection if you're using AO3, and must be submitted to Tumblr. AO3 collection revealed on Halloween! If you have a scheduling issue please get in touch with the blog, we can probably work something out ^_^ And you will be able to post on the dedicated AO3 collection earlier since it will be kept unrevealed until D-Day- aka Halloween!
