CEVV I'm here to ask you per our convo the other day.....headcanons on cooking specialties/skills of the heart pirates? whichever ones you prefer ❤️ (bepo cooking lol)
a/n: EEEEEEE i get to break out the completely self-indulgent Hearts intro i did for this!! >:3= (also hi i didn't forget this or esp the kata hcs, writing brain just leaves for long periods of time and i have little say in it 😭😭)
Skills of the Heart Pirates (headcanons)
he/they law, various pronouns for other Heart members word count: 0.6k
Bepo my darling light, probably just as clumsy in the kitchen as his captain is... Bepo tries his best to help out when it's his turn to cook for the crew (along with a couple of other members) but a lot of the time he ends up bumping into things and becoming more of a hazard than a helping hand, everyone's only respite is that he isn't as fire prone as their captain is; Bepo is, however, great at washing the pots, pans, and in general the bigger cookware after meals
Penguin started out making little snacks for Shachi on Swallow Island because he'd spent a lot of time with his mom doing the the same at it brought some comfort to him - when Law and Bepo came along, it was mainly so that Penguin could make sure this weird kid who saved his life actually ate
The Tang doesn't have a designated chef in the same way that the Strawhats have Sanji, many members rotate in and out of the kitchen depending on the day but it's usually Dorie, Bas, and Laeno that are in there the most; Pengy still makes small things anyone can munch on throughout the day to keep their energy up or if someone just asks, though - it remains very much a comfort to cook for his loved ones
I vaguely remember a mention in the light novel that Shachi worked as a hairdresser and I 100% agree - it's super cute to imagine Shacchan cutting everyone's hair when it gets too long, helping crew members pick out new styles or looks for certain occasions, having a field day when it's time for Bepo's yearly molt lol, and all free of charge! It's mostly because he's doing this out of the kindness of his sweet little orca heart, but a small part is also because he gets to chat and gossip a lot with whoever it is he's working on
I'm not sure where I picked up the notion that Ikkaku was an engineer along my fandom journey, but I like the idea that it's her in charge of something super important like keeping the ship running, she also pops into the captain's office occasionally to refill their coffee and haul Law out to dinner <3
The Hearts are inked just like their captain - not necessarily all over like Law, but it's unlikely that you'd find someone without at least one tattoo be it big or small - and the one to turn to for that would be Hake! They're the artist responsible for all the work done on this crew, though they do tend to be a bit mingy about prices, you can usually get away with a decent discount by praising their work and fluffing up their feathers a bit (only works for long term crew members, terms and conditions apply)
Smaller hc time!
Uni and Clione are typically in charge when laundry day rolls around, with the latter yelling at his peers to stop goofing around with the freshly warm sheets before they get dirty again
Bepo, Dorie, Bas, and Jean Bart do a lot of heavy lifting when it's time to restock supplies, not that everyone else doesn't help out too, they just take pride in being the ones that everyone relies on the most for their size and strength in heavy lifting (it's also very amusing to see the 'small fry' squabble amongst themselves about who can lift the most)
Bookkeeping and crunching numbers is left to Hoki and Gul, when Gul isn't in the infirmary with Marl taking care of their injured since Law isn't present again
Fang (Hakugan) is really knowledgeable about foraging, he and Laeno will often go together to pick out wild game/herbs if the Tang docks at an island with lush flora and fauna
Since they spent a lot of time underwater though, the Heart Pirates end up eating a lot more seafood than anything on land, and the ones who bring home the bread there are Penguin, Shachi, and Ani

Four:
Two weeks had passed, by your estimate, since you last saw Ben. Since you last saw anyone besides anonymous storm troopers who only came by your cell to drop off your meals. The food was rather meager but you had hardly expected a feast. At least it kept your stomach relatively full and your body in decent enough condition.
With little options left to you for entertainment, you spent most of your time meditating.
It felt strange to return to your old habit. As a child, you spent hours a day meditating in between training. Master Luke said it would help strengthen your connection to the Force. The more you welcomed its presence, the easier you could call upon your power in times of need. It had been many years since you had actively reached out to the Force. When you were in hiding, you never tried to create a connection. You had wanted nothing to do with it.
When you meditated back then, it was simply in hopes of calming your mind. The hard work you forced upon yourself kept you distracted during the remaining time of your exile. As long as you kept busy, your mind didn’t wander and the temptation to return to Leia, to find your wayward Master, or to dwell on thoughts of Ben didn’t overwhelm you.
But there would be little benefit from denying your connection with the Force any longer. You didn’t know why the Supreme Leader wanted you here, or what Ben intended to do with you, but you would need your wits about you.
Your powers were weak, had always been in comparison to Ben, but if you hoped to survive your imprisonment you would have to embrace them once more. You could no longer deny your Jedi training.
It might be the only thing that saved your life.
You closed your eyes, taking a deep breath through your nose and exhaling out your mouth. Your back rested flatly against the cold wall of your cell, legs crossed and hands in your lap. The background noise of the ship, the marching feet of storm troopers, the occasional announcement on the loudspeakers, faded as you allowed the Force to flow through you.
When your eyes opened you were no longer in your barren cell.
Taken aback, you pushed yourself slowly to your feet. You studied the room you where you now stood, unsure. The gray walls resembled those on the ship and you imagined you were still within its confines.
It had been so long since you had even attempted projecting your consciousness, that feeling had you floundering.
A lone pedestal caught your attention and you took hesitant steps toward it, regarding it curiously.
Something warped and black sat atop what almost looked like sand. But the color was too dark, and it’s texture flaked instead of gritty. Your stomach dropped when the only logical answer came to you.
Ashes. But what, or who, had burned?
The prized piece at the center of the pedestal was mangled but anyone who had lived through the Empire’s reign, or its subsequent fall, could tell what it was. Its owner had been the stuff of nightmares.
Darth Vader. His melted and disfigured mask was on display like a treasured possession.
It was then when you knew exactly where you were, whose rooms you were in.
“Kriffing hell,” you muttered in shock.
“How did you get out?” a sharp demand caused you to turn on your heel. You were confronted with an angry Ben glaring down at you.
His mask was off, but his expression only spoke to the fury that was running though him. His hand shot out, calling the power of the Force to him as he tried to pry your answer from you. “Tell me.”
You didn’t feel any compulsion to reply, which took you slightly by surprise. Instead, you cocked your head to the side curiously.
There had been a time when you and Ben were so close, so entwined in friendship that it felt as if you shared thoughts. As if you could speak to each other with merely a look. But nothing like this had ever happened before.
Kylo’s eyes narrowed, looking you up and down.
“You aren’t here,” he considered, taking a tentative step forward. You took an unconscious step back. “You aren’t strong enough to project,” he was mostly talking to himself. “It would kill you. No…this is something else…
“I can’t see where you are. Can you see where I am?”
“You have Vader’s mask,” your voice shook, appalled. “Like a trophy, an idol. Kriff, Ben!”
You could never quite bring yourself to call him by his chosen name. You didn’t know Kylo Ren. You knew Ben Solo. And no matter what he had done, and planned to do, you wouldn’t delude yourself into acting as if he were a separate person.
“No!” he shouted furiously. He pointed an accusing finger in your face, “Don’t call me that!”
You shook your head in stubborn refusal.
“He was a monster!” you exclaimed, disgusted by the sight. Your normal sense of caution around him vanished as you stumbled away from the cursed object.
“He was a leader,” Kylo snapped. “He was powerful. He had a vision for the galaxy and I will see it through.”
“You’re delusional,” you murmured sadly, forcing yourself to stand your ground as he strode angrily toward you. He dwarfed you with his presence, made you feel paltry and fragile.
“I am stronger than he ever was,” he spat, his body crowding you now as you turned in on yourself, making yourself smaller. “He allowed emotion to overcome him, to weaken him. I won’t make the same mistake.”
The sneer that crossed his face spoke volumes about how he felt about you. Whatever feelings he had for you in the past, platonic or other, they were gone. He had smothered all trace of affection and care until only a shell of his former self remained.
It made you want to cry. To see what had become of him shattered a tiny part of your heart you didn’t even realize still belonged to him.
“Then why am I here?” you wondered, voice soft and confused.
And you were utterly confused. If his new Master taught him to eschew all attachments, what was the benefit of keeping you around? You were nothing but a physical reminder of his past. A reminder of his parents, Master Luke, the Jedi, everything he had left behind that night in the temple.
You met his stare and you saw the first crack in his stone faced facade. You inhaled sharply at the uncertainty in his eyes.
Jaw clenched and mouth tense, he reluctantly admitted, “I don’t know.”
You licked your lips nervously and allowed a sliver of hope to enter your heart at his hesitation.
All too quickly the steely determination returned to his gaze and he spoke softly, with a dark promise.
“But I am going to find out.”
And in an instant you were back in your body, back in the cell that had become your home, and you felt fear like never before.
———————————-
The larger than life hologram of the Supreme Leader glitched before coming into focus. In the darkness Snoke appeared like a colossus, dwarfing his apprentice who greeted him on one knee and with bowed head.
Kylo attempted to look pliant and submissive, but Snoke was hardly fooled. Ren’s temper was nearly a physical thing and even from a distance he could feel it ebbing and crashing as his pupil struggled to remain calm.
“Why have you called upon me?” he drawled, his scarred mouth pulling into a deep frown.
In truth he knew what had brought Ren to his throne, it had only been a matter of time. Snoke had purposely left the boy to fret and seethe these past weeks. The dark side was fueled by passion and anger, after all. Kylo Ren, with all his resentment and indignation, was feeding it heartily even when he was merely thinking of the girl.
“Supreme Leader,” the vocoder on Kylo’s mask making his voice sound hollow, “I seek your wisdom.”
Snoke waved his hand lazily and Ren moved to stand, still showing deference to his Master.
“The girl…” he began again, unsure how to approach his temperamental lord. “She is no Jedi. She has no knowledge of the Resistance. She is of no consequence and yet she remains on the Finalizer—”
“And there she shall remain,” Snoke interrupted with a curl of his lip.
“She is a distraction!” Ren erupted, and Snoke didn’t bother covering his delighted grin.
“Precisely,” he agreed, and Kylo fell silent. “She distracts you.”
Leaning forward in his throne, Snoke towered above Kylo. It made the Commander of the First Order feel like an errant child and he loathed it.
“You say she is of no consequence,” he continued drolly. “And yet you failed to kill her at the temple. You allowed her to escape. I have taught you to reject sentiment, and yet sentiment is what has kept her alive all these years. Even now, locked away and out of sight, she haunts you. Do you know why that is?” Snoke eyed his apprentice with vague amusement.
“A bond, when forged through the Force, is not easily broken.” Kylo was thankful for the mask he donned, it kept Snoke from seeing his embarrassed rage. “Your grandfather, without benefit of such a bond, allowed jealousy and passion to consume him and caused him to lose sight of his plans. To waste his potential. But where Vader failed, you will flourish.”
“Supreme Leader—” Kylo tried to argue, but Snoke huffed scornfully.
“The bond exists,” he jeered. “Do not deny it, boy. You may not have felt it as strongly until now, until the girl began to connect to the Force once more, but it has endured since your youth.
“It has benefited your training until now to allow it to remain unacknowledged,” Snoke revealed, and Kylo’s body tensed. “You needed to separate yourself from the child you once were. Now that you have grown so powerful, it can be of use to us.”
“You taught me to renounce emotion,” Kylo tried to understand.
“Emotion is what fuels the dark side,” Snoke hissed. “I taught you to reject sentimentality. Love. Love is a weakness. It is what cost your grandfather everything. But passion is an emotion. Passion, and hate, and anger, all are food that nourish your strength and power.
“If you are to grow to your true potential, you also need control. No one can rival your power, but you lack discipline. You are reckless. You are heedless and feckless and it will get you killed.”
Kylo’s teeth ground together at his Master’s reprimand.
“The girl is no match for your power over the Force,” Snoke admitted blithely. “But in regards to restraint, she is your superior.
“The bond you wish to deny can grant you the control you lack. But you must nurture it. The girl is but a pawn,” he said dismissively. “She is a conduit. Through your bond, you will only grow stronger.”
Head bowed in reluctant acceptance, Kylo entreated, “What would you have me do?”
“Keep her close,” Snoke command was low and coaxing. “Foster the bond you share. Learn from it. Master your emotion until you can wield it just as steadily as your lightsaber.”
“And then?” he wondered aloud. Snoke gave a sinister grin. It was a terrible thing to behold and a small part of Kylo worried at the sight of it.
“When you have succeeded,” the Supreme Leader declared, sitting back in this throne with an air of victory, “you will sever the bond and kill the girl.”

Hokinson
Helen Hokinson, or “Hoky” as her friends called her, contributed nearly 1,800 cartoons and vignettes and 68 cover designs to The New Yorker. Her long-lasting association with the magazine began just a few months after the magazine launched, when a drawing of a round, middle-aged woman standing on the edge of a dock and enthusiastically waving good-bye to a departing ship was published in the July 4, 1925 issue. She had moved to NYC from Chicago in 1920 to pursue a career as a fashion illustrator and completed work for Lord and Taylor, B. Altman and Company, and John Wanamaker. She had also explored her comedic side in a short-lived comic strip that she created with her friend Alice Harvey titled “Sylvia in the Great City” for the New York Daily Mirror. While studying at the School of Fine and Applied Arts (now Parsons), Hokinson’s instructor Howard Giles was shown her drawing of the waving woman and responded with laughter, encouraging her to try submitting such pictures to magazines that featured cartoons.
Hokinson took an anthropological approach to her assignments for The New Yorker, investigating various locations and events in New York City and recording what she observed. Initially her drawings appeared in The New Yorker without captions, but eventually editors started captioning her drawings and making suggestions for situations to draw. In 1931 she met James Reid Parker, a writer for the magazine, and they began a collaboration that lasted for the next eighteen years. Parker convinced Hokinson to focus her efforts on suburban, upper middle class women, and the “Hokinson Woman” was born. This type of woman spent her hours shopping, gardening, and attending club meetings, theatrical performances, flower shows, and pet shows. She was very concerned about club work and civic duties, unafraid of trying new things or being laughed at, and perplexed at times by modern life. Hokinson Women could also be recognized by their distinctive plumpness, perky noses, and tiny feet.
This drawing, published in the November 21, 1936 issue of The New Yorker, features a typical Hokinson Woman seated on a large chair in the middle of a bookshop, asking an attendant, “Haven’t you got a thin best-seller?” The attendant is holding a copy of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind, published in 1936. Working with gray wash and an energetic, fluid line, Hokinson portrays the seated woman with the earnestness and fearless sincerity that is characteristic of all Hokinson Women.
Although Hokinson drew attention to her women’s imperfections, she always portrayed them with affection and compassion. While attempting to write a play with Nancy Hamilton, an author of Broadway comedy hits, her reluctance to have her characters laughed at prevented the project from coming to fruition. Hamilton wanted to add dramatic conflict to the play by making one or two of the women catty, and Hokinson cried, “But my women are honest, they’re good, they’re well-meaning!” Although Hokinson was self-effacing and shy, she began to feel as though people were laughing at her women rather than with them and undertook a public appearance crusade to help explain her work and defend the women from being unfairly ridiculed. While en route to one appearance at the opening of a Community Chest Drive in DC, she died in a tragic plane crash. Although her death was a great loss for New Yorker readers everywhere, her legacy lives on, continually inspiring us with her gentle, affectionate sense of humor and enthusiasm for documenting urban life and interpreting the social scene.

Treaty of Waitangi
Notes:
1769 - J Cook
Maori population - 350,000
Governed by - Tikanga and Kawa (principals) ------- Constitution made by chiefs and iwi representatives.
Iwi- tribe,
Hapu- Subtribe, Swell with life
Whanau - Family
Whenua - Land
Trebas
Mana : Status, prestige, power, respect, strength etc. Bound by spiritual power - whakapapa (genealogy) in terms of mana in relates through authority and ancestry. Can enhance Mana through acts e.g not sustained by class.
1769- Settlers, whalers, convicts (100 ) ------ 1814 - missionaries - John Busby hired to bring
back convicts to australia, was not granted an army/ defensive but rather told to use the relationships with Maori, in order to kick out convicts and therefore send them back to imprisonment in Australia.
1840- Euro 2,000 Maori- 250,000
1810-1830- 100,000 died of disease due to no exposure to outside germs, sicknesses, animals etc / immune system
.Iwi configerate agreements in order to divide land into provinces. - can also be done through war.
. Each province had their own autonomy and identity- was protected. Important because they had their own variations of language kawa/tikanga, and understandings of symbols etc.
.
1805- Te pahi - asks about european laws. Colonization dates back 400 years.
Trust and Trade. Te rauparaha made an agreement with a trader in order to get a ride with his warriors to seek revenge on a iwi. This meant the traders were untrustworthy to iwis. Iwi were reluctant to use traders because of this.
Missionaries- want to convert the uncivilised ( white man's burden)
Missionaries convert maori to a christian based society. Despised whalers, convicts etc because it does not fall under christian construct. Maori have own autonomy , interested in trade, technology, literacy, knowledge and medicine
Missionaries translated the bible into maori. In 1811 in Rangihoua opened the very first university for maori , in order for maori  to be educated and taught christian ideals  by Samuel Mardon.
Impact of colonization - Made trade with aboriginals in sydney- used as evidence to show that aboriginal people had laws when it comes to land.
1830- Paraone taoni ( ship) flagless ship (sought out as a pirate) . Needed a flag ------>  Later,  a flag was designed called Te Whakaminenga.
Blackbirding- Steal maori and pacific islanders and sell them to the slave trade.
Declaration of independence ---->  Busby convinces them (Tribe) to declare that they are an independent sovereign nation that is governed by rangatira.
Civilised - Christian and white. Maori traded well, Bible study becoming more capable of being “ Civilised”. Opportunities to travel, maori gain information of the wider world. Maori want to protect trade and engagement. If sovereignty wasn't given to the queen, would maori have cars today : Yes due to trade.
After 1840- Economic takeover.
Edward wakefield- Plans to buy acres of land, and ship settlers over to colonise New Zealand.
Abolition of slave trade, sex slaves and child labour. - Humanitarian rights. Can no longer go to lands for the sake of acquiring resources for the queen because it comes at an extreme cost of indigenous people.  1839 - Edward leaves and claimed 3 million acres of land in New Zealand ( wairau massacre) . Sold onto settlers however found out to be a fraud. Mass immigration is about to begin in 1840, 1840- 2,000 settlers by 1870 there was a growth in settlers to 250,000 throughout 30 years. Maori not selling land fast enough for the settlers
Why history of settlers / colonization is important:
Motivations about why people were willing to sign the treaty
Why there's differences in the treaty text - isn't a word for it e.g transliteration( word that represents a word in another language e.g sounds like. . Kawanatanga (governor) - is a transliteration in the treaty made up to represent sovereignty. - maori first met this word in 1805  through tipahi ( went to australia to find out about european laws ). Kawanatanga seen in bible through missionaries, and the declaration of independence (rangatiratanga)  in 1835. Declaration sent to France and England. Therefore maori knew what they were signing because they had heard the word sovereignty before.
Sovereign - power held by the sovereign , divine power (Mana, Rangatiratanga).
Background to treaty: Protecting maori and european from lawlessness. This statement comes from the savageness of society eg murder, rape, disrespect. There is no local authority to instate these laws this is why lawlessness has occurred in NZ. Busby was sent over as a man of war without the guns. What is needed is a local authority to insure that law is followed and respected even though maori has been asking for this a while ago. Establishing a government which is ruled by the queens law . Maori have laws already (tikanga and kawa) so the queens government is for europeans, as maori is preserving their independence and have their own kawa. People believe in white man's burden and that maori were uncivilised so therefore needed to be governed by the queens law.  ---------> Maori have the absolute authority in NZ.
“ there are many of her subjects already living on this land , and others yet to come.” directly relating to Edward Wakefield.
France is not interested in colonizing the entirety of New Zealand.- given permission by the government to start settlement in New Zealand.
Nz freely making relationships with other nations.
Article one difference between maori and english text - give absolutely to the queen of england forever the complete government over their land.
Sovereignty in the english text because : British saying maori give absolute sovereignty, and the rule to the queen. Missionaries translated the bible and the treaty ( reason why maori did not understand this piece of information, they were taught otherwise). If they knew they would have broke ties/ ended relationship with england. - english did this so that under british law they are entitled to the resources of nz generation of greed. Need to keep this from the treat of France.
39 maori signatures on the english text .
540 maori signatures on the maori text.
Maori trust the missionaries because they are “righteous people” . Maori became christian and maori trusted the missionaries because they were christian and therefore trusted the treaty because it was directly related to the queen who has a “close link to god”
Article two difference between maori and english text :
Maori:
Independence over their lands, villages and all their treasures.
English:” The full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their lands and estates, forests, fisheries and other properties.”
Both also confirmed trade in land should maori wish to maori - trade english text- Pre-emption pre emption is in there because the english, plan is to buy for cheap land and then sell this land for more. However it is not in the maori treaty because it symbolise trade and independence instead of pre-emption -
Guaranteed Rangatiratanga - self management with resources under the law ( whose law? - one law e.g queens law?) . indigenous rights that pre-existed the treaty.
Independence: you are the one who makes the laws
Possession: Under capitalist rule . How assets etc may be acquired. English version is specific to possession. Seen as good to the movement of humanitarian movement.
TONGA -  Treasures e,g feelings, values, tangible and intangible.
Article three difference between maori and english text:
Maori texts: “Ka tukua ki a ratou nga tikiranga katoa rite tahi ki ana mea ki nga tangata o ingarangi”
( Will give them the same rights and customs as her subjects of the people of england)
English texts: “Extends to the natives of New Zealand her royal protection and imparts to them all the rights and privileges of british subjects. “
Not to treat maori badly
Relationship with maori is important
Article four  difference between maori and english text : Delivered orally not written
Maori texts ; “E mea ana kawana ko nga whakapono katoa o ingarangi o nga weteriana , o rama, me te ritenga maori hoki e tiakina ngatahitia e ia”
English phrase: “ The governor says the several faiths of england, of the wesleyans of rome and also the maori custom shall alike be protected by him” .
Problems : two texts written for different audiences.
Mcnairs law : 1960’s - not fair to blame , rather to blend treaties. 1975 waitangi treaty is blended between maori and british. Principals are a blend of current day principals and application .- how we come up with a partnership.
Kawanatanga---------> good governance
Rangatiratanga----------> Self determination ( means independence back in the day)
Rights and Customs ------------> Equality
Taonga-------------------------------------> Active Protection
Sovereignty + Rangatiratanga ---------------------------> Partnership
1840- governor
1882-1884- maori went over to make sure the queen upheld the treaty, maori were told that anything to do with the treaty is treated by the government ( why it is called the crown) - Maori not happy due to the conflict of interest- different power thresholds .
Development of maori
Savage
Noble savage
Led to be civilised
Good government : consult with maori .
Summary:
The treaty of Waitangi has essentially supported our greater acceptance of maori in today's society. The ongoing feud between settlers and maori sparked the declaration of independence in 1835 which declared that maori be ruled by tikanga and missionaries/settlers be ruled by the queens constitution however this was exploited. In 1840’s the treaty was signed, which stated maori had independence and rule over their land, villages and treasures and to protect maori and european from lawlessness. Nethertheless the british  found a way to exploit the treaty through translation, for example the maori and the english text both have different claims, and due to maoris lack of understanding of english language and the lack of maori terms for english words, this manipulation was relatively easy for Britain. The english text states “ give absolute authority to the Queen of England, forever the complete govern over their land.” This fundamentally meant that Britain was entitled under law, to the resources of NZ and sadly it was signed by maori (which therefore established this law). If maori had known these translations, the treaty would not have been signed and all ties with Britain would have been cut. The effects of this treaty have been good and bad. Negative effects is Maori were and are still subjected to some kind of discrimination in society, not because of the genetic makeup but because of cultural or “civilised” superiority this included racism from the pakeha community. From 1926- 1940  maori received 25% less on pensions for old age. In 1937 Regarding the pension, the Treasury official Bernard Ashwin is quoted saying  “On the face of it, it may appear equitable to pay the average Māori old-age pensioner the same amount per week as the average European pensioner, but in this matter questions of equity should be decided having regard to the circumstances,The needs and the outlook on life of the individuals concerned … the living standard of the Māori is lower – and after all, the object of these pensions is to maintain standards rather than to raise them”. Maori are also more subjected to poverty due to the barrier between pakeha and maori job equality. Employers are more likely to hire a white male over a maori male - not considerate to ethics and moral reasons but due to a perception of the quality of performance from each candidate, many people are hereditary racist and not consciously aware that they are discriminating maori, in today's society, discrimination is generally a more subconscious issue. Positive effects of the treaty include establishing a more integrated society between maori and pakeha, a general acceptance of maori in society and a decrease in racism and discrimination of maori and its culture.

Kawanatanga---------> good governance
Rangatiratanga----------> Self determination ( means independence back in the day)
Rights and Customs ------------> Equality
Taonga-------------------------------------> Active Protection
Sovereignty + Rangatiratanga ---------------------------> Partnership
Positive effects of the treaty include establishing a more integrated society between maori and pakeha, a general acceptance of maori in society and a decrease in racism and discrimination of maori and its culture.

what a mess i’m in, you’re so masculine
a/n: something very self indulgent for me, but i did keep my promise in that the next writing post i made wouldn’t be angsty sooo (ノ∀\*) i didn’t expect it to be this long either but in any case-- i hope all three of you within this niche on my page enjoy and have a nice day~ (〃‿〃)つ・*:.。. .。.:*
gnc transmasc reader, he/they law minor PenShachi, suggestive but not explicit word count: 1k
The party was loud; a celebration of their beloved Penguin’s birthday.
Older Heart Pirates teased one of the acting first mates - a position shared between him, Bepo, and Shachi since the inception of this crew - for finally reaching the big three-o.
Music blared from every corner of the ship, far away enough from any island to cause a disturbance, but this much noise would usually upset the captain themself. This time, though, you watched Law fondly across the room as he afforded his childhood friends bemused smiles, even squished between them as other Hearts gathered round to share the joy.
You had your fill of it all earlier, drinking Fang and Ani under the table, listening to Hoki tell exaggerated tales of his cunning before Hake cut him off and enlightened the round table with actual stories they’d heard as a tattoo artist from folks long before joining this not-so-little ragtag crew of misfits. It was enjoyable night, so fun that you had to recharge your social energy sooner than expected on one of the loveseats on the sidelines not too far from everyone else.
There was something missing, however.
Your gaze absentmindedly drifted like the leftover contents of your drink swirling in its glass. From the corner of your eye, you can make out Uni and Clione sneaking away from some privacy - one of them catches the knowing smile thrown their way, flustering a bit before disappearing down the Tang’s echoing halls.
Of course there were sweethearts slinking off to get it on after all the booze everyone had. Even Bepo had fallen asleep with his partner cuddled close atop his fluffy, warm body. You were almost envious of the two, so open about their affections despite the crowd. Then again, being the most obvious lovebirds on board, aside from two certain childhood friends, also meant that they were the easiest targets for the others teasing so you were grateful that Law erred on the conservative side of things when it came to publicizing their affections; even if it was only ever in good fun.
Penguin and Shachi were the next couple in your sights; you always felt comforted around them, even more so when they were together - a warmth that seemingly radiated from the spaces between them washed over anyone in their immediate vicinity. As of now, it looked like your partner was absolutely smothered in it.
Ikkaku made herself comfortable on the other side of the sofa, neither of you spoke but the pleasant buzz still running through your systems kept awkwardness away.
Not that you’d ever feel awkward around Ika-chan anyway.
Shachi’s bright laughter at his own joke filled the air just as you closed your eyes for a bit, taking your mind back to the week prior when the two of them had linked one of your arms with theirs and cheerfully announced that you were accompanying them on a shopping trip.  Truthfully it just was an excuse for Shachi to get something nice to wear on Penguin’s birthday, Ikkaku had offered to tag along and with you in tow, presumably also picking out a new fit, it was hard for Law to argue in the few seconds Shachi and Ikkaku afforded them to even reply before the three of you were long gone from the port.
It was a day full of gossip, giggles, and gorging on whatever snacks your captain would otherwise nag at them for indulging too often between trying on a third of the clothes available and making every sales assistant in each store consider crying or hitting the button underneath their counters to alert the navy.
As the sun set on that summer island, you finally found an ensemble that was to your liking; a mesh top that exposed muscular arms, your tits cupped by comfortable black material that matched the black choker you wore, adorned with a small metal heart, all pulled together with at last form fitting skirt, sitting just above mid-thigh - though everyone was nothing but supportive and complimentary, Shachi couldn’t help but tease,
“Can you even bend down in that thing?”
Adjusting your skirt in the present, you huff at the orca’s good natured jest floating around in the back of your mind, pulling heat to your ears and cheeks. When you open your eyes the couch is vacant again, but you do catch a familiar set of footsteps coming towards you.
“Haven’t seen much of you tonight,”
“Sorry, I’ve been preoccupied.”
Law catches the bemused lilt in your returning hum, leaning up for a kiss as you stand. Their hands trace well-worn paths around your waist, the swell of your hips - you feel the breath leaving you following every gasp, your chest fills with fairy floss instead - your fingers tug gently at his hair, trying to find some kind of way to ground yourself before you get lost it in all too quickly. Far too soon - even after all this time, they’re able to affect you like this so easily.
Thankfully, you muse, he’s not much better.
It doesn’t take more than a slight nudge for you to be seated again, although this time it’s within the confines of Law’s room instead of that beat-up old loveseat in the Tang’s living room. Your smile widens as flickers of blue light fade quickly.
“Aww, too shy to show me off, captain?”
“You’re gorgeous, darling, I’ve been waiting all night for this.”
They don’t rise to the bait, you would pout if their want wasn’t so palpable, their need so apparent when Law smooths down your thighs, positioning himself between them. Your feel the way their heart stutters when you put a hand on his chest, rubbing against the comfortable fuzz there, relish in the damn near whine your captain makes when you brush your fingers against the soft underside of their neck.
What the hell. You had the rest of time to tease each other into oblivion. For tonight, you’d grant him permission to do as he pleased.
So long as Law kept making those sweet, tantalizing noises.

In which the family talks about fruit
Katsuo: Fun fact: blueberries are the only fruit named after a color!
Miyako: Star fruit?
Katsuo: So close! That is a shape.
Kyo-1: They deadass forgot about oranges.
Vio: In English, the color orange is named after the ripe orange fruit.
Kyo-2: Okay, they also forgot about blackberries.
Morgan: Black isn't a color.
Semi: Redcurrants!
Matthew: Currants come in both black and red. The color isn't part of the name, but an adjective.
Terry: Kiwis.
PK: I'm very sorry, but kiwis are a bird, not a color.
Sylvain: What about raspberries?
Kyo: Green bean?
Shingo: Lemons!

Okay I need to talk about my sons and daughter because???? I love them and they are the best siblings to each other!!!!!
Here’s everyone in order of age: Vio (23), Semi (21), Kyo-1 & Kyo-2 (19), Shingo (17), Morgan (16)
Despite being the third oldest ones, Kyo-1 and Kyo-2 are definitely the most childish ones among the siblings. They’re always scheming and playing pranks on the others.
Shingo, Semi, and Morgan are the best study buddies! They help with each other with their homework all the time!
Morgan has been teaching Shingo how to use fire magic so he can be like Kyo
Semi and Shingo frequently go to hobby shops together to collect models and figurines
Vio babies Semi a LOT. She’s still can’t get over the fact he’s like a full grown adult now because he was just so pure and innocent???
Adding on to that, Semi, would sometimes drop a “fuck” or “shit” around Vio just to remind her that he is an Adult.
Kyo-1 and Kyo-2 teach Vio self-defense techniques so they don’t have to worry about their big sister having to go out alone at night for whatever reason
Oh and if Vio gets into a relationship? You’ll bet your ass that all five of her brothers will be there to give her S/O crap if they mistreat her in any way
