SamBucky Gift Event 2023!

The @sambuckylibrary will be holding a gift event!

Just make a SamBucky fic, podfic, moodboard, gifset, piece of art, fic rec list, or edit for someone! Use one of our badges and tag @sambuckylibrary in your post for each fill. We will be tracking #sbgift2023 for reblogs.

No need for sign-up. No theme to the gift, but you can certainly make it holiday-themed if you would like to. All you need to do is gift your piece of SamBucky something to someone!

The event will start on December 1st and run until January 7th. During that time, we will be reblogging and sharing the work you guys create here on our blog.

What is this?

It’s a SamBucky gift event.

Is there any pressure?

No pressure at all. No sign-up. Just give a gift to someone, use one of our badges, and tag @sambuckylibrary if you join the event.

How many gifts should I give? Can I give more than one gift to a person? Can I give one gift to multiple people?

Give one gift to one person. Give several gifts to one person. Give one gift to several people. Give a bunch of gifts to a bunch of people. Do however many you please and give to however many you'd like to.

Will you provide me a person to give a gift to?

We won't, but if you want to, you can always give your gift to the SamBucky Library.

Are there any prizes for making anything for this event?

Yes please, just SamBucky. There can be side ships, but the main ship should be SamBucky.

How long will this event run?

RULES AND GUIDELINES

What are the guidelines for the bingo?

I will be borrowing some of this from the MYSU Valentine’s Day Bingo 2022 Guidelines, since they were fantastic.

For Everyone:

1. Remember to @sambuckylibrary in the post as well as #sbgift2023.

2. If you’re uploading to AO3, please:

a ) Say somewhere which prompt you’re filling.

b ) Add it to The SamBucky Gift Event 2023 Collection (SamBucky_Gift_Event_2023).

For Artists:

1. Create at least one piece of new art that can’t have been posted anywhere else before this.

2. All visual art forms are welcome:

a ) Gifsets, at least 3 gifs.

b ) Aesthetic boards or moodboards, at least 4 images each.

c ) Drawing/painting, that is not a sketch.

d) Fan video.

e) Graphics edit.

For Authors:

1. At least 500 words.

2. Posted on Tumblr or AO3.

3. Can be part of a series, but should work as a standalone.

For Podficcers:

1. The podfic should at least be 5 minutes long.

2. It should be posted on either Tumblr or AO3.

2. Make sure to give brief descriptions of the fics or podfics as well as their rating and wordcount.

Things to be mindful of when creating:

For Sam

Avoid framing Sam only as a caretaker or emotional support for Bucky. Be mindful of Sam acting angry or aggressive in an out-of-character way and falling into the angry/sassy Black man trope (check out the MCU source material to help with character traits).

Avoid decentering Sam as a main character and refrain from focusing entirely on Bucky.

In art: avoid whitewashing Sam’s skin and research drawing Black characters.

General disclaimer: Race affects every aspect of his life, including interacting with police/government and the white structures of the world when it comes to performing his duties as Cap and simply being a Black man that lives in the U.S.

For Bucky

Avoid phrasing “flesh/normal/human hand” to refer to the contrast between his prosthetic arm and his right arm. The phrasing is ableist. You can simply refer to his prosthesis when relevant, otherwise use “right/left arm/hand”.

For more information, please check out this document suggested by @ninesdb on how to write Bucky as an amputee. @ninesdb is also open to questions if you have any queries not answered by the google doc.

Specific Tags:

What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)

Oh god. I lose my mind a bit. I tend to keep trying and trying, which is never good and always ends with me feeling frustrated and sad, just like those last few months. I found that forcing myself to take a break helps a lot. Just actively stopping myself from thinking about it or opening the docs to try again and again. Literally worked like a charm.

Why do you continue writing fics?

Because I love writing. It’s really that simple. That feeling I get when I write a line I’m proud of, or when someone tells me my writing touched or moved them in some way. I like to see how much I’ve improved. I’ve been writing for over ten years and I just love it so much. When I’m happy, I write. When I’m sad, I write. It’s just a great way to express myself and let out those emotions. Also, I really, really enjoy putting my favorite guys in situations.

Hello there, inquiring person!

I do indeed follow some WIPs, let's do a little round-up of what comes to mind right now, shall we?

(this is by no means a complete list of all the WIPs I follow and there are also quite a few that I haven't even gotten started on but I just *know* will be fantastic, but even I can't read everything all at once.)

Here we go:

the world on fire by burlesquecomposer | 54K, Ch 18/?, Mature

Author’s summary: Steve loves old vinyl records, doodles on his files, and cannot remember a time that he didn't serve the TVA. And that suits him just fine—that is, until stray variant Bucky Barnes, fresh out of HYDRA's grasp, drops into his time theater and makes Steve question everything he believes in.

I've rec'd this one before but I like it so much and I think that it is criminally underread, so I'm just gonna mention it here again. Please read this gem of a story. It's well written, has a super fun premise, clever plotting, wonderful characterizations, and a firm grasp on the SteveBucky dynamic.

The Hand of a Devil by @tessabennet | 37K, Ch 13/30 Explicit | Part 3 in What I'm Looking For series

Author’s summary: While Steve is buried under Arctic ice, frozen in time, Bucky Barnes is alive; and he has been turned into a weapon by his enemies, living as the Fist of Hydra - the Winter Soldier. It is a half-life, and the years are long and full of pain, as the world keeps on changing. This is part three of the series, [...] it spans the years between 1945 and 2012, following Bucky during his time as the Winter Soldier, but also some other familiar faces along the way.

Can I interest you in 30 chapters (well, currently 13) of PAIN? It is very well-written pain, I promise! With lots of historical details, great mission chapters, lots of insights into the Soldier's and Bucky's mind (whenever he resurfaces), and a really interesting take on how the trigger words were implanted. I *think* this can be read without knowledge of the first two parts, but to get the whole experience and to really understand all the references (which is half the...umm...fun?): do yourself the favor and just start at the beginning.

The Last First Time by seapigeon | 55K, Ch 3/4, Explicit

Author’s summary: In which two men out of time decide to join forces to take down the worst version of the Time Variance Authority, and gain a lot more than just victory. [...] Part post-EG fix-it, part Loki journey of self-discovery, and part ‘Let Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes Be Happy’. Plus plenty of other things.

I was a bit hesitant to read this at first since it also features Steve/Loki (and even a hint of WWThreesome, but it’s really only a brief reference, and SteveBucky is very much endgame in this) and that’s usually just not something that I personally like to read. BUT I love and trust this author so I decided to give it a try anyway. And oh, I’m so glad I did. This story is not just an EG-Fix-it, it also improves immeasurably on parts of Loki, TFATWS, and even Wandavision. It is pretty much the smarter, kinder version of the MCU post-EG.

And then we have two fics that haven’t been updated in a while, but they’re not abandoned (at least to my knowledge). I will literally drop everything and run to my laptop the very moment the next chapters of these get posted:

Let me go to the window by @743ish | 16K, Ch 3/?, Explicit | Part 4 in A Home Game series

Author’s summary: “He feels like he's been reading the whole day from a book, following each line with his finger, and now that they’re alone, in arm’s reach, with the deadbolt turned firmly on the door, he’s lost his place on the page. He doesn’t know how much he can do, how soon Bucky is willing to let him give in to this. How much longer Steve has to pretend he hasn’t been dying all day from wanting him.”

In 1952, Steve Rogers has begun to live again. Down the line, it's gonna cost him.

I guess I could categorize this as a Mid-century Shrunkyclunks AU? Steve still became Captain America in this universe, but he survived the war, and in 1952 he goes to a Baseball game and meets veteran Bucky Barnes, and things go from there.

I guess you could read this part without the first three, but really why would you want to do this? Start at the beginning! The writing is exquisite & the characterizations are excellent, and on top of that you get an interesting exploration of how Steve would experience the political and social climate of post-war America in the 1950s and his role as a national symbol in it. I feel woefully incapable of conveying just how good this story is. It is so quiet and measured in a way, but also so full of capital-F Feelings. The author tagged this with ‘Intensely Requited Love’ and yes, that’s it. That’s exactly it.

i will soar, then by @pinballbrain | 61K, Ch 8/9, Teen | Sam/Bucky!

Author’s summary: Bucky Barnes gets a new therapist. But he's not the only one who needs to. aka Bucky gets his shit together and does right by Sam.

A Post-TFATWS character study of Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson. Yes, it’s told from Bucky’s POV and it is Bucky-centric, but that doesn’t mean that Sam gets short shrift in this at all. He’s not treated as Bucky’s crutch or his therapist. Instead, they both grow, and learn from, and lean on each other, and it’s written with so much love and empathy for both characters--I honestly never want this to end!

Sam stands at his bathroom sink, splashing water on his face to rid his eyes of leftover slumber, and looks up into the mirror.

Every day, he finds himself older than he ever remembers getting.

Flecks of gray sprinkle his goatee, a leftover look reminiscent of his golden years, and a small roll of his tummy peeks out over the elastic of his briefs.

He stretches out his neck and his back, the cracking noises louder every day, and rubs at the spot beneath his shoulder that always seems just a little sore these days. It’s not enough to stop him from going on his morning run—even if it is more of a fast walk/jog these days on account of his poor knees—but it is enough to make him a little more careful when he stretches.

Strong hands take over the kneading at his shoulder, and Sam relaxes into his husband’s touch, groaning when he thumbs over a problem spot just right. His eyes close for just a moment, appreciating the fact that Bucky knows his body just as well as he does, before he opens them and studies Bucky’s face in the mirror.

Bucky’ll never show his true age, sure, but the weight of the years has run down his face all the same, if at a slower pace than it would anyone else’s. There’s a bit of silver in his short beard to match with Sam’s own, bits of hair near his ears that gleam against the rest.

He wonders how many of the smile lines on Bucky’s face are because of him.

I'm going to do podfics because I don't think people always think about podfics on lists like this and they don't get as much love as they should, so here are some SamBucky podfics I love in no particular order 🥰 :

2) [Podfic] gossip about the weird guy who just showed up by blackglass, GoLBCollabs (GodOfLaundryBaskets), Ravin_Pods (Ravin), Tipsy_Kitty with the original fic written by @abhorsenbranwen (T, Gossip When Bucky Helps Fix the Boat, TFATWS, Text Group) - In between fixing the boat, some neighbors do some speculating about who the fuck this guy who may or may not have a metal arm but possibly mentioned running errands for Wakanda is.

3) [Podfic] honk honk vroom vroom voiced by @quietnighty with the original fic by @enemyofrome (T, Uber Driver AU, Reckless Driving, Crack) - Sam meets the Uber driver from hell. Apparently, the Winter Soldier has a new day job.

4) [podfic] Where's the Love We Once Knew? voiced by @funsized-loser with the original fic written by @jemgirl86 (Not Rated, Newscaster Bucky Barnes, Baseball Player Sam Wilson, Lovers to Enemies to Lovers) -

“Like I said,” Bucky replied, “Wilson is good, but he’s not the second coming.” He shook his head. “You talk about him like he’s Hank Aaron reincarnated or something, when he’s really just an asshole,” he shot back, without thinking. “Yeah, he can field, yeah he can hit, but he knows shit all about what it takes to make a team work.” And, okay, a tiny voice in Bucky’s head acknowledged that he was talking about an entirely different team — an entirely different kind of team. But he was all worked up (because any mention of Sam Wilson always got him all worked up, and he’d been having to listen to people talk about Sam nonstop all week), and he was too far gone to shut-up. Or: Bucky gets caught trash talking Sam on a hot mic, and drama ensues.

5) Buffy Burnes Ph.D. the Scientific Illustrator Roommate [podfic] voiced by litrapod (litra) with the original fic by me (M, Canon Divergence, Crack Treated Seriously, And They Were Roommates) - Sam decides to take a break from Avengers business after Age of Ultron. He puts out an ad for a roommate on Craigslist for his new apartment in Delacroix. He gets one response from a "Dr. Buffy Burnes".

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

hmmm, probably Rough Surfaces. It’s very close to my heart and even though it’s very difficult at times, I enjoy working on and writing it so much.

I think must’ve been a deadly kiss (only love can hurt like this) is a close second.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

Well, I like to pretend I’ll get to every idea I have one day but honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever write the wrestling au or finish that soulmates au, even though I really, really love both of those ideas a lot.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

Bold of you to assume I remember things. Also almost every time I do research I get distracted and just dive deep into something else and learn nothing about what I actually wanted to look up. It’s fun.

🛳️ A fic that brought you aboard a new ship

You know I kind of have a one-track mind when it comes to shipping, so it's mostly SteveBucky for me. The only other pairing I started to read regularly over the past year is SamBucky (I might make a separate rec post for that one day because I've since found some really excellent fics). I think the first SamBucky story I read that really convinced me was this one:

Muscle Memory by seapigeon | 13K, 3 parts in series, rated Teen-Explicit

Starts mid-season of TFATWS and then moves beyond that. This is only 13K but it packs such an emotional punch. This is Bucky and Sam dancing around each other, and away from each other, and then finally with each other. Also, I highly recommend everything else written by this author (including a fantastic WIP).

😂 A fic that made you laugh out loud

While we’re at it, let’s do another SamBucky rec:

we're awesome, totally genius by napricot | 4K, Teen

A short and sweet Modern No-Powers AU, in which hot teacher Bucky rescues Sam from a bad date with Tony Stark’s "evil twin". It is wonderful! Napricot is another one of those authors where I can wholeheartedly recommend everything she’s ever written. She has a special talent for taking the crackiest of premises and turning them into something moving and emotionally sincere. And still keep it hilarious!

✨ A fic you wish you could read again for the first time

Hmmm...I think I would like to get the chance to read some of the “big ones” again for the first time and really savor them this time around. When I first read a lot of them, I was just gorging myself on all things Stucky I could find at the time and so some of them kind of tend to bleed together or I can hardly even remember anything other than...they were really good? But since I want to give some love to lesser known fics, let’s go with:

As Time Goes By by Trouble_With_The_Snap | 66K, Mature

This is a tough read--there are no happy endings here--and I realize that this is not a fic for everybody. In fact, it might not appeal to most people. However, it is one of the best fics I have ever read. I’ll just copy here what I wrote in my bookmark because I think it sums it up best:

A smart & thoughtful investigation into how Steve's Endgame choice would realistically play out. Brutally honest and absolutely devastating without being pointlessly cruel or wholly lacking in compassion towards the characters. Masterfully set up, patiently developed, confidently structured, beautifully written. And the payoff! I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop - and BOY, did it DROP.

Like I said, you'll need a masochistic streak a mile wide to do this to yourself, but holy shit, it is so, so good. I realize that this may seem like a strange choice for the “I want to experience this all over again” question, but the feeling that came over me when I started to realize what the author was doing here and where it would inevitably lead was just...I was floored.

This was fun! Let’s do it again some time! You can always ask for more recs outside of this ask game.

Summary: Sam's eyebrows go up, impressed, and he reaches over to squeeze Torres' shoulder, "This is amazing, kid. Thanks, really." Bucky sits and watches in utter horror as the pink darkens on Torres' cheeks. Oh, he realizes. Oh. Fuck.

Reasons why I love it: Jealous Bucky is just the best. And I love Torres, so having him be the catalyst for some good old Sam-Bucky angsting is fantastic. Sarah is amazing in this too, I love all of their characterizations honestly. This fic is super sweet, and if you haven't already, I hope you check it out for yourself!

Subtlety Not Our Strong Point by copperbadge

Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: T Words: 2,944 Tags: Alternate Universe, Engagement, Brunch

Summary: Bucky is not good at proposing, but once he managed, he and Sam were going to let people find out organically. Unfortunately, Tony Stark has never done anything organically in his life.

Reasons why I love it: Whelp, say what you want, but you can't deny it – Bucky's way has its merits. I love this one, Sam and Bucky are so in love, and Tony crashing their plans without even meaning to is fucking hilarious. This fic is really sweet, and I hope you go and check it out for yourself!

Summary: Bucky's gotta give it to the future for this: they've turned casual sex into a goddamn art. What is a friend with benefits, he types into Google, and spends the next two hours reading about the distinctions between booty calls and friends with benefits and fuck buddies. It’s extremely informative. He’s gonna put it to good use, like, pretty much immediately.

Reasons why I love it: Jesus Christ, this fic is so hot, holy shit. And just as the cherry on top, there are feelings all over it, good, mushy feelings, fuck yes. I love how Bucky ambushes Sam in the beginning and how Sam just goes with it. It's so fun and so sweet and oh my god, you need to read this if you haven't, it's so good!

Reasons why I love it: Their voices in this are so perfect, that old-timey forties Brooklyn drawl. I love Steve and Bucky's friendship here, and Steve's need to protect Bucky and keep him happy always is so heartwarming. Plus, Bucky's crush on Sam is the cutest thing ever. I love this fic to bits, and I bet you will too!

Pairing: Sam/Bucky Rating: M Words: 8,951 Tags: Post-Civil War, Bickering, Roommates

Summary: “I’m not sharing my room,” Sam mutters, knowing as he says it that it sounds exactly like he’s a fucking ten year old facing a new sibling. Steve hastily makes what Sam thinks is supposed to be an understanding face. “Of course not,” he says soothingly. “He can bunk in with me, it’s not like we haven’t done it before. It's a twin room, anyway, there's already a spare bed.” Sam guesses a bigger house is out of the question. Whatever; the three of them have spent eight hours crammed in a Mini, it can’t be that bad. It’s not that bad. It’s worse.

Reasons why I love it: Sam and Bucky being asshole roommates while Steve despairs at them from the sidelines is something I never knew I needed. This fic is so fucking good, funny and heartfelt and adorable in turns, with fantastic dialogue and characterization. I love it so much, and I hope you go and read it for yourself, because it's amazing!
