Anime conventions and their Yamato roots

“Conventional” (ha ha) wisdom says that the first American convention devoted to Japanese animation was Project A-Kon 1990 in Dallas, Texas. This prototypical event was instigated by a group of Texas anime fans gathered under the banner of Star Blazers’“Earth Defense Command,” a Space Battleship Yamato fan club that grew to embrace all of Japanese animation. As of this writing, Project A-Kon is preparing for its 20th show.

But was A-Kon the first anime convention in North America? No. Not even close. For years, we’d seen references and offhand comments about a “YamatoCon” that was held in the Dallas area years earlier. Were these references true? Our crack team of researchers donned their explorer togs, dusted off their pith helmets, and began the harrowing search for enlightenment. Well, to be honest we sent some emails. Here’s what we found…

The first YamatoCon – that is to say, the first American fan convention devoted to Japanese animation – was held on August 13, 1983 at the Harvey Hotel in Dallas Texas. This one-day affair was the brainchild of Mark Hernandez, Don Magness, and Bobb Waller, each of whom had experience in the Dallas comics/SF fandom community and each of whom put up their own hard-earned cash to make YamatoConhappen. Scheduled the next-to-last weekend before school started, Mark Hernandez remembers the planning being as simple as getting commitments from dealers, finding a venue, and setting a date. Yes, it really is that easy to start a convention.

Programming consisted of the first 26 episodes of Star Blazersrecorded off TV, shown in continuous order (minus commercials, of course) and a bonus Yamato film. This 13-hour Journey to Iscandar (“It was a long day,” says Mark) was a primary attraction at YamatoCon, 1983 being a time when VCRs and blank VHS tape were expensive, collections of Star Blazers on video were hard to come by, and the experience of watching Star Blazers outside the morning or afternoon UHF timeslot was a draw in and of itself.

Star Blazers on video wasn’t the only activity, of course. Like other conventions past and future, YamatoCon had a dealers room consisting of 22 tables of for-sale memorabilia. It might sound small by the standards of 25 years later, but we must remember that anime merchandise of the day – what was available in the States, anyway – hadn’t achieved the tidal wave proportions it would reach in the wake of Robotech, to say nothing of the total saturation of the post-Pokemon, post-Sailor Moon years. Anime merchandise in 1983 consisted chiefly of books and model kits. Roman Albums, Anime Comics, black and white manga volumes, the occasional manga weekly, and other publications streaming from Japan in the wake of the Yamato Boom battled for the anime fan dollar alongside model kits from Yamato, Crusher Joe and My Youth In Arcadia…not to mention the endless ranks of giant robot kits from unseen shows like Mobile Suit Gundam, Dougram, Ideon, and something called Macross.Along with the remnants of late 70s super-robot merchandise sold here as Shogun Warriors, the anime con dealers room in the early 1980s was far from barren. In fact, I still waste my money on that sort of stuff.

Also available at YamatoCon were copies of Mark Hernandez and Don Magness’s Star Blazers fanzine Argo Notes. Future EDC officer/contributor, fan artist and “Between Galaxies” author Logan Darklighter won the model contest with, naturally, a Yamatomodel. It proved to be a pivotal day in Texas anime fandom. Approximately 100 attendees and 8 dealers made the show an unqualified success. Don remembers it this way: “I remember we got to the hotel early and set up the rooms, then went out to breakfast. When we got back, there were 3 young men sitting on the front steps, one of them had a convention flyer. Mark asked if they were there for the con, and they said they were. We went inside and out of their hearing range and had a little celebration. 3 people had come! We had no idea that the place would soon be packed.”

A showing of 100 might not sound like a lot in today’s numbers (“that was about 100 more than we expected,” said Don). However, when considered against the attendance at general SF conventions in 1983 – a time when your absolute largest cons MIGHT draw five or six thousand attendees and your typical Dallas or Atlanta comic book show maxed out at three – YamatoCon‘s ability to nail down that many dealers and customers is commendable.

The show’s importance went beyond the one day; people across Texas and indeed, across fandom as a whole, who were unable to attend or who heard about it after the fact were spurred into action by the mere fact of YamatoCon‘s existence. That such a thing could happen – that Americans could organize and hold a successful anime convention – was both revelation and reassurance. Anime fandom was going to be more than just a video room grudgingly tacked onto the local Star Trek show or a half-page of merchandise in the back of the latest issue of Fangoria.

First Ship Ever: Kirk/Spock. I grew up watching Star Trek the original series with my dad, and even though I had no idea what shipping was, I knew Kirk and Spock were meant to be married.

Last Song You Heard: Loser, Baby from the new Hazbin Hotel series. Keith David's voice is transcendental.

Favorite Childhood Book: Unwind by Neal Shusterman. These books freaked me the fuck out, but I was addicted to that series. I also read it at way, way too young of an age. (Sorry to reveal that I'm a Gen Z kid like this)

for the bandcamp post you rbed earlier, what were the cool music recs that you were mentioning in the tags? 👀

Been meaning to get to this ask for a bit and since today (12/2/22) is Bandcamp Friday (meaning all proceeds from purchases go directly to the artists!) I figured it was a perfect time to share recs!

Cheshire Moon are a really lovely filk duo (wonderful humans on top of making wonderful music) with several albums out. Highly recommend their stuff to people who like folklore and mythology, and I am a big fan of the electric violin that features heavily in many of their songs. Some of my favorite tracks of theirs include Banshee, Build Your Wings, and The Witch in Your Story

Run Boy Run are a folk/acoustic/americana group with some really phenomenal fiddle featured alongside their vocals. Some tracks of theirs I really like are Hoot Owl, Under the Boughs, their take on Waterbound, & Who Should Follow Who?

Derina Harvey Band are a Canadian Celtic rock group whose electric strings I also adore, they do cover of a lot of classic sea songs and folk music and I especially like their versions of Caledonia, The Mary Ellen Carter, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, and Drunken Sailor

Vixy & Tony are a filk group with a REALLY incredible strings section who do a nice mix of some of their own songs and covers of some other classics (their version of Dawson's Christian remains my favorite I've heard, the cello on it alone is just incredible -- also, Dawson's Christian is the best, it's a classic filk space "ghost ship" story), I also quite like We Are Who We Are

Grace Petrie is a queer folk/protest singer whose stuff I have fallen a little bit in love with this year. Her music is often extremely political in the best way but also very, very heartfelt and I think it's my goal in life to be able to write parts like her fiddle player, Ben Moss. My very favorite song of hers is The Losing Side, which I have emotionally belted along to..... a lot this year, but I also highly recommend Northbound, We've Got an Office in Hackney, Storm to Weather, her version of Tom Paine's Bones, Farewell to Welfare, and last but not least by any measure, Black Tie (which is an ode to butch/gnc identity that also got me to cry the first time I heard it over on the transmasc side of things)

The Faithful Sidekicks are a rock filk group that leans equally sincere and comedy (and also are really lovely humans, who I got to hang out with a bit at DragonCon this year!). I know they have a fun new parody album out I have not listened to yet, but some of my favorites of theirs are I Built a Time Machine, Fatty Bolger, Spoons, Meetings, and Sancho Panza.

Beth Kinderman & the Player Characters are some friends of mine who also make really excellent, largely acoustic filk. Someday they will hopefully release their newest album which has some songs I'm dying to be able to buy, but in the meantime I also really like Supernatural Aid, Refusal of the Return (both off a whole concept album that's a feminist deconstruction of the Hero's Journey), The Dread Gazebo, and Across the Water, which is technically about Game of Thrones but honestly, as a non-GoT fan, also just slaps

And for a rapid-fire round of a few more favorite songs: try Ship of Stone by Leslie Fish, Home to Me by Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, Oops We Split the Party by Clearly Guilty, Everybody Hates Elves by Kari Maaren, Neil Armstrong by Cat Faber, Row On by Ninebarrow, Somebody Will by Sassafrass, and Cheshire Kitten by S.J. Tucker

Also, if I can be shameless for a moment at the end here, my filk duo, Astrisoni, has an EP and a rough apartment-recorded single up on our page. We're hoping to maybe get some more songs up next year, but for now there's at least a couple of things!

Thoughts about "The Night Market"

I adore the use of puppetry in this episode, and the synchronised/joined way the Valkyries move.

It feels like Laszlo just needs to learn the same lesson he seemed to learn last week: try being nice to Colin and don't pour scorn on everything he likes. Let him love fairy tales!

I enjoyed the way Marwa popped out from behind Nandor (seriously, for anyone of medium to small size Nandor would be SO FUN as a boyfriend because you could just move around totally unseen in his slipstream and then boing out the way Scully sometimes did with Mulder) but really hope she's going to be able to break out of the control she's currently under because it sucks

Nadja is a rotten employer but I really like her cherry-red extensions; her hair is so fun, always with the Sailor Moon miniboss vibes.

This whole episode ends up just being a showcase for Harvey Guillen looking strong and agile fighting and his curls getting progressively dishevelled, and I respect that.

"You're being kind of a fucking dick, okay?" says Guillermo, dodging perfectly without apparent effort but increasing exasperation

Since someone wants to vague about me making a comment on a PUBLIC blog post, let me explain the importance of taglines in titles.

A tagline/secondary title adds further context to the show without spoiling too much, while also setting an expectation to the audience. Now, such expectations can be met in unexpected ways, or surpassed, but what a show or project chooses to use as its secondary title should in good faith tell you what part of the show is going to focus on.

For instance; She-Ra. Specifically the reboot. Now, colloquially in the fandom it's just referred to as She-Ra right? But the actual title is She-Ra and the Princesses of power, and what do you know? The show actually does develop the other princess characters. Or what about Avatar: the last airbender? Yes I expect the show to focus on Aang's journey as both the avatar and the last of the airbenders, but guess who else was focused on? Oh that's right, the supporting cast! Or what about a show with a singular title that's a bit of a mouthful? Star versus the forces of evil? Well I get from the title it's about someone named star taking on the forces of evil. Whether they did that well is not the point, I got star fighting the forces of evil.

What about games? Bendy and the ink machine gave me bendy and gave me an ink machine. Indie game Edna and Harvey: Harvey's new eyes? Yep, Harvey got new eyes there.

So forgive me for expecting a show titled Miraculous: tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir to give me tales of Ladybug AND Chat Noir. I don't care if the show is colloquially called miraculous ladybug, voltron isn't called voltron legendary defender in casual conversation and half the time the show is further shortened to just miraculous. Point being, the show isn't called the miraculous ladybug. The show isn't billed like sailor moon, or Steven universe, titles which indicate both the premise and the protagonist as a solo perspective even if there are secondary characters.

People got drawn in by wanting to know about Ladybug AND Chat Noir, and I feel like that title drawing people in, to be told by the narrative that ladybug and chat noir are EQUALS only for the narrative to completely destroy the lore of them being balance, of no singular person being able to wield both of them, with the whole reason they are kept secret is because unifying them is supposed to grant the user ultimate power instead of whatever the finale pulled; only for the narrative to consistently demote what should be a secondary protagonist to less than a deuteragonist and remove him from a confrontation that all narrative setup created as expectation in its audience, I'm not surprised people are pissed and feeling like the title lied to them.

If it had been just ladybug from the get go people wouldn't be as upset. Tempering one's expectations however, is easier to do when the narrative including the title remains consistent in what it's trying to get across.

Hi! Thanks for the ask! Here are some of my headcanons for Rachel T. McKenzie, AKA Numbuh 362:

-Bisexual (has had crushes on Nigel, Chad & Fanny at different points in her life)

-Absolute nerd. We know she’s a fan of Yipper (their world’s Pokémon) and Dr. Time Space and the Continuums (their world’s Dr. Who). I’m 100% convinced she fangirls like nobody’s business and is very involved in the fandoms of her favorite shows & movies. I can see her being into whatever the equivalents would be for stuff like Star Wars, Sailor Moon, Sonic the Hedgehog, DC Animated Universe, Spider-verse, ATLA, just to name a handful.

-She has anxiety & is admittedly not the best at coping. As per the norm in the KND, Abby is the one who nags her to sleep, drink water, take self care days, & not bottle up her feelings. She also regularly receives a lot of encouragement & reassurance from Fanny and Patton.

-She’s a designated Responsible Oldest Sibling™️; She wants to be the best role model she can be to Harvey. He definitely looks up to her, but given his hot-headed nature it can be difficult to reason with him, and she worries about his lack of healthy social skills.

-She is an Animaniacs stan & her favorite is Yakko because Oldest™️
