BeatBeat challenges with elegant movements and beats
Tumblr media
BeatBeat rhythm platformer game comes in hot with a launch for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to Janarik Games for their incredible creativity. Available now on Steam with 100% Positive reviews. BeatBeat isn't your typical digital game. It's a unique blend of rhythm and platforming, drawing players into a symphony of well-timed movements and beats. At its core, BeatBeat revolves around an elegant system. While coordinating two types of gameplay with separate hands. With your left hand, you'll manage character movements. This isn't as simple as just left or right; you'll need to navigate a variety of challenges in BeatBeat. These are due to test your coordination and reflexes. Jumping, running, and other platforming elements are standard fare here. Similar to that of classic platformers we've seen over the years. In BeatBeat you're in a world that's bursting with vibrant vaporwave visuals. Such as neon lights, digital art, and retro designs that give off a kind of '90s internet nostalgia. And while the aesthetics alone are enough to captivate anyone, it's the beats and rhythms that truly make this game stand out.
BeatBeat - Launch Trailer

So here's the deal in BeatBeat. Your left hand? That's going to control your movement, making sure you're dodging obstacles, making leaps, and nailing those landings. Your right hand? It's all about feeling the groove. You'll be tapping, holding, and just syncing up with the funky beats playing in the background. The best part? You're going to need to flex both the rhythm and platforming muscles in your brain simultaneously. Think of it as a wild dance-off between your brain's left and right hemispheres. Sure, each part sounds good on its own, but combine them, and you've got a symphony of coordination and quick thinking. In BeatBeat can swap out your keyboard for a gamepad. And speaking of tunes, there's this stellar 15-song soundtrack. These aren't just random tracks, they're the kind of future funk, bleep bloops, and chill lofi hiphop vibes you might have playing in the background while you're doing... well, anything! If you're into streaming, these tracks are safe to play on Twitch, so no pesky copyright strikes. Now, if that's not good enough, there's a feature to connect with other players. You can dive into levels crafted by other talented folks or put in your creativity by designing a challenge for others. Hence the Steam Workshop Integration.
Casual Minigame
Oh, and just when you think it's all about the beats and jumps, there's a surprise element – a fishing minigame! BeatBeat lets you relax after an intense rhythm-platforming session to fish. There's also a dog. And you can pet it. If that doesn't seal the deal, I don't know what will. So, dive into the world of BeatBeat and experience rhythm like never before. BeatBeat rhythm platformer offers a fresh, engaging, and challenging game. While combining two beloved genres into a seamless blend. Its high-energy, coordination-heavy gameplay might not be for everyone, but for those seeking a unique challenge and a feast for both ears and eyes, it's worth diving into. Available on Steam for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Priced at $12.74 USD / £10.87 / 12,57€ with the 15% discount until September 19th.

*takes a deep breath*
Okay, game, I'm ready to be proven wrong and that this game isn't the Man of Action energy vibe that I felt it was giving me, thus supporting my initial hesitations to play when it originally came out.

You know what would be so funny
If some disgruntled obey me fans got so tired of the og game that they make their own knock-off but it gets better ratings than the og one. It clearly takes dunks on Obey Me and does everything they do but better and consistent.

Krimson is the best game shown off in Steam's Next Fest, for people with weird, niche tastes. In terms of game feel, it's like if somebody made Thumper into a platformer. The aesthetics are jarring, the platforming feels smooth as hell, and the soundtrack is incredible (it sounds like the game looks).
It's a rhythm platformer, but it doesn't really play as slow as it does in most "the platforms are synced to the music" games. The gif is kind of slow, but I really only chose it for the V I B E S.
It is 100% Seizure Warning: the Game, however, so... definitely avoid if your orbs aren't compatible with that sort of thing.

The Nintendo 3DS eShop closes on March 27th! Remember to grab the games you want before the shop goes kaput. I recommend Groove Heaven!

I made something cool for my friend
Ok so basically yesterday I offered to make an fnf sprite of my friend’s character (character in question is called Jolt and the friend is called TaelsDaFoox) , then while on a walk I thought “hey what if I turned this into a full mod”
so I spent like seven hours making a mod of a silly tanuki boy and when Taels woke up and saw it he was amazed
So while I would link the actual mod, I will instead direct you to Jolt’s origin game: Tanuki Defusal Co., where you can find a billboard in the hub world that will take you to the mod, but PLEASE play the actual game first (I’m not even a dev on it but cmon I wanna support my friend)
anyway I had fun making this mod and I hope you enjoy playing it (and yes there will most likely be a V2)

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! The evil Ghastly King has sent his forces across the land to steal all the bananas and solidify his rule as king of the jungle. Donkey Kong wants to show him otherwise. Go get him! This game comes from an era of the stubborn ape's history where Nintendo just didn't know what to do with him.  An era that gave birth to the DK Bongos, a bongo game controller peripheral that predates the first Guitar Hero. For this instrument of fun, only five games were made but considering Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is one of them, I'd call the whole experiment worth it. DKJB is a platformer with a functionally simplistic control scheme all about collecting bananas, stringing aerial combos and tricks together, and mercilessly pummeling any weird looking creature that gets in your way. It's got plenty of variety too with swimming segments, riding segments, and even Punch-Out styled fighting matches against evil gorillas! Yeah, the lack of every other notable DK character is concerning, it is a bit of a short and easy ride, and your arms will probably hate you after prolonged play sessions but like the story I describe to start this post, it doesn't really matter. The fun, frantic, unique, accessible and super repayable score based gameplay does. That's what make Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat so wonderful!
P.S. I think I've only played this game on the DK Bongos once as a demo in a Toys R'Us. I actually beat the game with a Wiimote and Nunchuck using the New Play Control! version on the Wii. Aside from that one time my brother and I got grounded because we got into a brawl after I said he was stupid after he called Donkey Kong stupid (yes, that happened), I have really fond memories of this game.
P.P.S. I do currently own the version with the DK Bongos but I haven't played it yet. It's currently on the long list of things I need to do.
P.P.P.S. Did you know that the team behind this game would go on to make Super Mario Galaxy and the teams' leader would go on to be the director behind the Nintendo Switch? Yeah, not bad for the bongo platformer!
P.P.P.P.S.  I was originally going to end this post with a crack about how a platformer played with a music peripheral is something that a speed runner would come up with but then I wondered "Wait has someone beaten Dark Souls with the DK Bongos?". Lo and behold, here is a video of a guy beating a boss from Dark Souls with DK Bongos.

Nintendo Direct July 2023 Thoughts!
I miss E3. I miss having a set time of year to be able to schedule time off so I can watch the onslaught of summer game trailers and reveals live, an not having to worry about sandwiching my viewing experience between work hours.
I did eventually, in the dead of night, manage to watch this latest Summer-time Direct and even after a night’s sleep I’m still unsure what to think of it. There were a games of interest in it but not so much for me specifically and perhaps too much focus on Mario related properties overall.
Let’s get onto some highlights though: Princess Daisy is playable in a mainline Mario game... oh, and there is a new 2D mainline Mario game. Super Mario Bros Wonders is looking pretty awesome, even though it took a while for it to grab my interests. Along with Daisy getting her time to shine, I also like the incorporation of Yoshi as a playable character, but with the capability of carrying other characters as if he were the mount/power-up like before.
On that Mario note, Kamek is playable in Mario Kart! I don’t play Mario Kart 8 but given the long history of Kamek not being playable in Mario Kart despite being planned for Mario Kart 64, this still feels pretty noteworthy and I’m glad for the character.
A new WarioWare game also got announced. I’m... unsure what to think about WarioWare: Move It. It’s likely going to be fun but that’s purely based on the experience of the other WarioWare entries being fun. Given we already had a WarioWare entry on Switch, an having read this article recently, I do feel that a different IP (Rhythm Heaven perhaps, I do believe the same team make them) should have been the focus.
There’s also a new Princess Peach game being worked on... which doesn’t appear to have Perry the Parasol in and so doesn’t appear to be carrying on from Super Princess Peach 2... a game that ended with questions left unanswered. I guess we didn’t really see enough of this outside of it existing, so I’m currently curious but a bit pessimistic (I don’t think my day at work helped my view going in).
This post is getting pretty long so let’s be quick with this non-Mario stuff; Sonic Superstars continues to look great. That game is probably a guaranteed game for me to purchase at this point. Penny’s Big Breakaway is another game that looks pretty fantastic so far and I adore the character design. Headbanger Rhythm Royale seems quite amusing, an whilst Pikmin 4 never was quite my thing, the new entry looks pretty stellar.
So yeah... I’m still unsure about my thoughts to this Mario Direct. What do you think though; any games that interest you? Feel free to say in the Notes.
