I believe in God. But I do not believe the same things about Him that I did years ago, when I was growing up or when I was a theological student. I recognize His limitations. He is limited in what He can do by laws of nature and by the evolution of human nature and human moral freedom... I can worship a God who hates suffering but cannot eliminate it, more easily than I can worship a God who chooses to make children suffer and die, for whatever exalted reason.
Rabbi Harold Kushner, When Bad Things Happen to Good People

“Are we assailed by a sense of grievance? Then let us respond by saying: "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me" "I give thanks, my God, that I have suffered for You. How greatly did You suffer for me?" and let us ponder on our Lord's limitless love for us and meditate on the examples from the life of Christ. If we persevere with this line of thought, other thoughts will flee.”
-Gerontissa Theosemni.

"Do not seek earthly glory in any matter, for it is extinguished for him who loves it. In its time it blows on a man like a strong wind, and then quickly, taking from him the fruits of his good works, it goes away from him, laughing at his foolishness."
- St. Gennadius of Constantinople

"He who is not angry when there is just cause for anger is immoral. Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice. And if you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust."
-- Thomas Aquinas

Quote
Remember, if any one of you wants Christ, he wants you; and if you long for him, he longs for you. If you seek him, he is seeking you. If you will now cry to him, he is already crying after you. ‘Whosoever will, let him come and take of the water of life freely.’
Charles H. Spurgeon (excerpt from a sermon delivered on 1 June 1873)

“I am sure that using a prayer rope when you pray will be a deep consolation and solid support for the entire time of our life. Hold on tightly to it, dear, trust in it, and peace will descend on you. Then you will no longer be able to live without these words, connecting us with the Giver of all joy, suffering and the very life, both in this world and beyond.”
Saint Elizabeth the New Martyr to Duchess Zinaida Yusupova
