Here’s my 5* book review of The Rat King by Emma Miles.
The Rat King is a wonderful adventure for hearts young and old (or like me – in between). The main character, Rothfel, may be the son of a wealthy coven lord, but that doesn’t mean that he feels safe or loved. It’s hardly a surprise that his loyalties are split, or that they waiver over the course of the book.
This is an exciting but heartfelt novel as you follow Rothfel’s journey from being a miserable boy with no control over his life to someone altogether more… Sorry, that would spoil the ending for you. Following Rothfel’s journey, though, was immensely enjoyable. There are so many brilliant characters in this novel, and as it’s the first in a series, I look forward to revisiting those faces.
If you enjoy fantasy, young heroes, and morally grey characters, you’ll love The Rat King.
The blurb:
Being the son of a Coven Lord is a far and desperate cry from luxury and safety. Every day Rothfel must prove he is worth the food his father puts on the table, and avoid the notice of Lord Atise’s brutal bodyguard, Bicken. When his only friend, a lowly slave, is cruelly taken from him, Rothfel finds himself alone in the sprawling, chaotic city of Letniv.
Yearning for friendship, love, and approval, he is offered a hand from the unlikeliest of places…
But who is really worth his loyalty?
Akimas Atise, his distant, cold, and terrifying father?
Golghen, the mysterious chameleon of Letniv city; king of liars, king of thieves?
Gentle, brave Leida; slave, concubine, descendant of the free women of the north?
Or Zephyr? Ghost, murderer, and devoted follower of the King of Rats.
Rothfel is only ten, but his choices, his love, his loyalty… will change the Land Beneath the Sky.

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com Good day, my bookish peeps. If you’ve followed me for any time now, you’ve probably noticed that I have several favorite genres: romance, mystery, suspense, thrillers, and romantic suspense. I do read from other genres, like science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but these aren’t my standard go-tos. However, since we’re in the middle of “Spooky Season,” I…

Forever, Interrupted - Taylor Jenkins Reid “You loved him. He loved you. You believed in each other. That is what you lost. It doesn’t matter whether it’s labeled a husband or a boyfriend. You lost the person you love. You lost the future you thought you had.” Everything changes when Elsie meets Ben at her local pizza shop. They fall head over heels in love and skyrocket straight to marriage. When Ben suddenly passes away, Elsie is left to reconcile their secret elopement with a mother-in-law she has never met while grasping to hold on to the remnants of her brief life with Ben. Elsie and Ben are ordinary people who get the chance to experience an extraordinary love. The characters being so relatable made the story that much more heart rending. This novel broke my heart in the first chapter, then proceeded to rip it up into tiny little pieces and then light them on fire. I don’t think I’ve ever cried my way through a whole book start to finish. Recommended if you’re looking for a good cry! #bookishfeature #bookstagram #bookish #romance #booklist #recommendedread #bookreview (at Bookstagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/CY5Ad31rUAp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Great Dog in Heaven! Beasts of Burden is amazing!
This book collects a series of stories about a crew of neighbourhood dogs (and one cat) who sleuth out the forces of darkness plaguing their town of Burden Hill.
Superbly written and gorgeously illustrated, I was immersed in every page.🔥🖤

looking for oddly specific tropes, please recommend me some books/podcasts/shows on these tropes
found family tropes
rough on the edges (preferably middle aged) man/woman looking after a kid with trust issues
an unlikely bunch bounding over everyday things
angsty tropes (preferably not a romance book/podcast/show)
character A saves character B’s life (for example, A takes a bullet for B. another example, A covers B when an explosion happens). even better if there’s treating wound scenes after
anti-hero/fallen hero trope, with morally grey characters
manipulative person A who tries to use innocent person B, but slowly getting attached to them
post apocalyptic trope
post apocalyptic world, with a physically strong survivor finding a kid whom decided to tag along. preferably a book with fluff and angst
sci-fi/dystopian tropes
set in near future, the government had became corrupted and the world was caught up in capitalism. a bunch of outcasts are trying to get by in a world like this and finds comfort in each other
tired/traumatised yet rough on the edges protagonist who is just trying to live life in a near-future world, but keeps on getting caught up in troubles
please recommend me some books/podcasts/shows with these specific tropes, thanks a bunch!

This is a book that has helped me immensely in my life to make me feel less alone. I suggest it to any woman who is struggling with needing male attention or struggling with slut shaming ideologies. Loose Girl by Kerry Cohan made me feel comfortable in my own skin <3

Book review: The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
Tumblr media
Here's my 4* review of The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman.
Heart warming and magical
My introduction to Alice Hoffman was through her novel Practical Magic and as soon as I’d finished reading that story, I wanted to find out more about the Aunts. So it was rather helpful of Alice Hoffman to write The Rules of Magic.
If you want a pacy, exciting tale of adventure, this isn’t it. Instead, this novel takes you on a thoughtful journey of discovery, the discovery of magic and the discovery of self. Who am I? What am I capable of? What should I dare to do?
It paints a richly depicted picture of how the sisters, Jet and Franny, grow into the aunts we will meet in Practical Magic. It also questions what a happy ending truly is.
The blurb:
In this sparkling prequel we meet the Aunts from Practical Magic, sisters Frances and Jet and Vincent, their brother. From the beginning their mother Susanna knew they were unique: Franny with her skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, who could commune with birds; Jet as shy as she is beautiful, who knows what others are thinking, and Vincent so charismatic that he was built for trouble. Susanna needed to set some rules of magic: no walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles and certainly, absolutely, no books about magic…
But the Owens siblings are desperate to uncover who they really are. Each heads down a life-altering course, filled with secrets and truths, devastation and joy, and magic and love. Despite the warning handed down through the family for centuries – Know that for our family, love is a curse – they will all strive to break the rules and find true love.

Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer
I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I thought I knew the story, but this peppers in so much more detail that I didn’t even know I wanted. I definitely found myself throughout the original four books wondering Edward’s thoughts and perspective on things and this was a satisfying delivery. In the sixth installment in the Twilight Saga, Meyer takes the reader through the events of the first novel, Twilight, through the eyes of Edward. For the first time the reader is able to hear Edward’s thoughts, experience the events that Bella was not present for, and hear the conversations among the Cullen coven. Additionally, the reader is given a behind the scenes view of Edward’s mind reading ability in live action throughout the novel. Via his gift of mind reading, Edward offers the reader new insight on familiar characters from the mundane school drama of Mike and Jessica to the sinister thoughts of James and Laurent. Though Edward and his family’s backstories are told to Bella in the original book, the reader is treated to a much more thorough account of that past and a deeper dive into the early days of Carlisle’s coven.
I was a big fan of the Twilight series (books and movies, though a lot of the movies didn’t live up to my expectations) at the height of the Twihard fever days. I’ve never thought that the books were particularly well written but also not so poorly written that it really affected my ability to enjoy the events of the books. As I’ve grown older I do have to agree that the story is predatory and more than a little icky. A one-hundred-year old man in a seventeen-year old’s body is able to overcome his overwhelming bloodlust for a seventeen-year-old girl and they become obsessed with one another and fall in love? I mean its problematic. We can analyze and say that. But as in most fantasy novels I read, I do not find it so problematic that I am not able to see it for the fiction that it is and fall into step with enjoying the story.
I found the change of perspective refreshing. I enjoyed the new insight into Alice, Jasper, and Edward’s gifts and the history of Carlisle’s life. After reading this I am now craving more story that gives the proper time and attention to Esme. I feel like she is such a powerful character who shaped so much of Edward and the others in his coven but is not given nearly enough of the spotlight. I’d also very much like to see more of the Edward perspective during parts of Breaking Dawn and maybe even a little beyond. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and would undoubtedly read more in the Twilight series should Meyer indulge us.

☂️VIOLETS☂️
BY KYUNG-SOOK SHIN AND TRANSLATED BY Anton Hur REVIEW
“Violets pulled up some deeply-hidden childhood trauma in me, which now has the chance to heal itself.”
I've managed to master some courage and I have written a quite emotional review.
This was my goal from the beginning because there are way more people who could professionally analyze an author's work than me but it's only me who felt a certain way reading this book so, here I am.
"I had a complicated relationship with my mom. This book brought me closer to her even if I didn’t want to."
When I have seen the title of her other book: Please Look After Mom I had a feeling that she writes about motherhood and mom-daughter relationships and I was scared.
Because I wasn't ready to deal with this emotionally.
In Violets, I had to face a few of my demons but I felt like both the author and Anton were 'holding my hand' through this journey so I felt like I wasn't alone.

and @wnbooks @orionbooks (UK edition)
I highly, highly recommend this book. If you haven't read it yet but you were tempted many times to get it. This is your sign to grab it.

One of my favourite authors, Peter Hoskins brings a unique perspective on things especially in his battlefield analysis and carefully determined paths that were taken by medieval commanders such as the Black Prince. I find these perspectives reveal sone aspects of personal character and challenges that had to be faced that we usually miss. Plus Peter is a really nice guy, a true gentleman. #medieval #peterhoskins #hundredyearswar #historian #author #middleages #recommendedreading https://www.instagram.com/p/Chbu04Xr7VJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tour Wrap-Up
I have been mentally struggling since the beginning of the pandemic, I'm not going to lie. But around a year and a half in, and I found myself struggling more and more mentally, to come to terms with the pandemic, its handling, while sinking more and more into a deep depression.
So, I once again took to writing about the pandemic. Just putting some of the chapter headings together was enough to pick me up, to feel less mentally challenged. The more I wrote, the more I wanted to highlight my struggles with mental health, what I also saw as misgivings and an injustice of how the pandemic was being handled and just how much I was being affected. Three years in and with mental health now at critical levels, none of us have scathed the pandemic well.
The following reviews conclude my tour for Survival: The Covid Years - Time for Change.
escape_into_a_good_book
After reading both of Ilana's previous books I knew I didn't want to miss this one. In this book Ilana shares her physical, mental and emotional challenges through the Covid pandemic. Everyone had their own very personal experience of the pandemic. For someone who really struggled mentally, with overwhelming anxiety throughout the pandemic, I knew reading this book would help me. There were times throughout the book where I found myself really resonating with Ilana's experiences. I had a really bad experience of Covid at the very beginning of the pandemic which then gripped me with extreme fear for my health and the health of my loved ones. Not everyone understood why I was feeling or behaving in certain ways and at times that was something I struggled with because I didn't always feel I could explain my worries and anxieties. Reading this book has helped me validate some of those feelings, the ones that I didn't understand or couldn't explain.
This is such an important book for mental awareness month, this month. It shares positive steps which Ilana took to help her with some of challenges she had to endure. She encourages the reader to explore their own thoughts and feelings of their experience and how it affected them so they can heal from some of the trauma. We know Covid is not going anywhere so everyday we are learning and adapting our lives to live with it, each one of us will be able to do this at a different pace to one another. Just remember to show kindness, patience and consideration for others. This is a must read for anyone needing help, advice or just being able to read about someone else's journey of the pandemic. Know that you are not alone.
Thank you to @literallypr and @ilanaestelle_author for having me on this book tour and for gifting me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Rhianydd Morris
This is an amazing book about a memoir of someone life dealing and coping with Covid. It deals with her disability illness and anxiety how she managed. Her shielding experience her mental health her anxiety. About going out wearing mask and dealing with everyday life. I like these types of books I find them interesting read.
Conclusion
If you care about your mental health, you'll want to read this book. It's not just a book for me, it's for everyone. It's a book that will bring understanding in the world's history. It's also a book that can bring you acceptance and unity.
Thank you to @literallypr for the successful book tour.
