2022 Year in Books. I don't set a yearly goal for myself because I don't want to feel pressured to read, it kills my joy and gives me stress. This was such a fun year for reading ❤❤ I went to in-person book festivals and author meet n greets, bought way too many books, had book hangovers and book slumps, was wonderfully emotionally destroyed by some books, fell in love with new book boyfriends/girlfriends and overall lived some amazing lives through these stories. Here are some of my favorite reads of 2022, plus a repost from @mercys.garage that made me feel like a celebrity for a day! @therealsjmaas @tracydeonn @justina.ireland @imaginariumbookfestival @kezarthur @ilona_andrews @naominovik @seananmcguire #bookstagram #booktok #readingislife #goodreads #urbanfantasy #yabooks #crescentcity #readingislife #booksandcoffee #booksaremagic #reading #pocauthors #weneeddiversebooks #goodreadschallenge #2022readingchallenge #goodreadsreadingchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CmWynZrOOdJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer
I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I thought I knew the story, but this peppers in so much more detail that I didn’t even know I wanted. I definitely found myself throughout the original four books wondering Edward’s thoughts and perspective on things and this was a satisfying delivery. In the sixth installment in the Twilight Saga, Meyer takes the reader through the events of the first novel, Twilight, through the eyes of Edward. For the first time the reader is able to hear Edward’s thoughts, experience the events that Bella was not present for, and hear the conversations among the Cullen coven. Additionally, the reader is given a behind the scenes view of Edward’s mind reading ability in live action throughout the novel. Via his gift of mind reading, Edward offers the reader new insight on familiar characters from the mundane school drama of Mike and Jessica to the sinister thoughts of James and Laurent. Though Edward and his family’s backstories are told to Bella in the original book, the reader is treated to a much more thorough account of that past and a deeper dive into the early days of Carlisle’s coven.
I was a big fan of the Twilight series (books and movies, though a lot of the movies didn’t live up to my expectations) at the height of the Twihard fever days. I’ve never thought that the books were particularly well written but also not so poorly written that it really affected my ability to enjoy the events of the books. As I’ve grown older I do have to agree that the story is predatory and more than a little icky. A one-hundred-year old man in a seventeen-year old’s body is able to overcome his overwhelming bloodlust for a seventeen-year-old girl and they become obsessed with one another and fall in love? I mean its problematic. We can analyze and say that. But as in most fantasy novels I read, I do not find it so problematic that I am not able to see it for the fiction that it is and fall into step with enjoying the story.
I found the change of perspective refreshing. I enjoyed the new insight into Alice, Jasper, and Edward’s gifts and the history of Carlisle’s life. After reading this I am now craving more story that gives the proper time and attention to Esme. I feel like she is such a powerful character who shaped so much of Edward and the others in his coven but is not given nearly enough of the spotlight. I’d also very much like to see more of the Edward perspective during parts of Breaking Dawn and maybe even a little beyond. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and would undoubtedly read more in the Twilight series should Meyer indulge us.

I'll make a short work of this. 'How We Disappeared' A 13 year old Kevin is charged with the mission to find the truth about his family's past. The reason? His dying grandmother tells him a secret she almost carries to the grave. At the end of the spectrum is Wang Di, a survivor of the Japanese occupation of Singapore. If you read enough books or watch dramas, you can predict where this is going. The arc of this story encompasses the plight of comfort girls who were held captive, mistreated (putting it mildly) and later abandoned in the face of defeat. I was slightly impatient with the book for having figured out the plot too early and because I had already read a couple of books dealing with the occupation earlier. But that's on me. Is the book well-written? Yes. The characters? Well-formed. The storyline? Fleshed out. It punches all the right spots. If this is your first read about the atrocities committed during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, Singapore and the region- trigger warning. If you want more material on the occupation: 1. The Rape of Nanking 2. Finished my first book of the #2022ReadingChallenge @stories-by-shanna-p put together! I wanted something simple and easy and quick for my first book of the year and I was still feeling the Christmas spirit. I read Christmas at Harrington's by Melody Carlson. I checked this out as an e-book from my public library and it was exactly what I wanted. I'm horrible at reviews, but I'll give it a shot.
How do you do life again after spending eight years in prison for a crime you were wrongly accused and convicted of? This is Lena Markham's problem. Just after Thanksgiving, she is released after doing time for embezzlement of funds from her church. She decides to begin a totally new life in New Haven, Minnesota with a few contacts from her social worker and a few bucks to get by until she gets a job. She begins work at a local department store, one that is most likely closing after Christmas. Lena becomes Mrs. Santa and in the process learns to stick up for herself, forgive herself and others for hurting her and that even in the darkest times, a little faith-even when you've tried to ignore it-will always provide a way.
This intrigued me when I read the official synopsis and I found myself relating to Lena in more than one way. The despair and loneliness Lena felt after being released wasn't far off how I felt after a few happened in my own personal life. The fear of trusting again, realizing how naive she had been, that was me. The difference though? Lena let her faith lapse while I kept mine. Lena didn't have much support in the beginning, but by the end, she, like me, had a wonderful system of people who loved her, no matter what. Lena reminded herself what Christmas was about and that she could rely on God to help guide her. That said, this is not what I would call over-the-top religious fiction, just a reminder of what Christians celebrate.
Overall, this was a great book. Kept me engaged and I wondered right up until the last chapter how it was going to all come together in so few pages. It does seem rushed at times, and could have used a bit more background in places. I enjoyed it.

Covid has finally stopped kicking our training resumption to the right and now we’re back into full swing Individual Training. We’ve got the Training Centre’s first Reg Force Decentralized BMQ, and the other night I had to break out my old beret I haven’t worn in a decade to show the troops how to get theirs formed up. I also thought my night duty shift would be a good chance to grab a pic for my monthly book post 👌 First month of 2022 for books read included a modern day professors take on how to live a good life through applying stoic philosophy, Matthew McConaughey’s super interesting and hilarious autobiography, Erwin Rommel’s Classic study of Infantry Tactics, An account of TF 1-07 (2RCR Battlegroup) tour in Afghanistan, and Jack Granatstien’s comprehensive study of the Canadian Army from colonial days to the Modern Era. 📚 #bookstagram #januaryreads #2022reads #2022readingchallenge #aguidetothegoodlife #WBIrvine #greenlightsbook #matthewmcconaughey #erwinrommel #infantryattacks #kandahartour #jackgranatstein #canadasarmy (at Aldershot, Nova Scotia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZxmyBQJevUqX5CN5g1pDVwPUVItZktYR_zvNU0/?utm_medium=tumblr

One of the reading challenges I’ve signed up for this year is The TBR 22 in ‘22 Challenge. I’m bad for making TBR piles and never following through on them, so this is a challenge to try and rectify that. This is a random pile of 22 books that have appeared on a variety of my TBR lists over the past couple of years, but are still unread. Hopefully I can get them read this year! 📚 #tbr22in22 #bookstagram #tbr #bookaddict #readersofinstagram #procrastinatingreader #igbooks #instabooks #2022readinggoals #2022readingchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CYxOBlHrJ38/?utm_medium=tumblr

First read of the year goes to…. HEART OF CINDER ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Heart of Cinders took me on a ride, and sometimes the ride wasn't the best. While overall I enjoyed the story, I felt at times it fell a little flat, it dragged too long, yet the scenes I would have liked to have more of cut too short. The world-building was a bit confusing and hard to understand, but I loved every character, my favorite being Gus or the King. The fight scene just felt a bit too long and then everything else happened very quickly, the ending was a cliffhanger and I shouted out in frustration,(the good kind). In the end, I still loved the book and can't wait for the sequel. #heartofcinders #reading #bookstagram #booknerd #books #2022readingchallenge #bookblogger #retelling #jdarleneeverly #cinderella #kindle https://www.instagram.com/p/CYR4PTGpb5_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bad Girl Reputation by Elle Kennedy
Tumblr media
A great sequel that tells of the power of second chances. A special thanks to @stmartinspress and @ellekennedy33 for the chance to read this #eARC !
Picking up where Good Girl Complex leaves off, Bad Girl Reputation tells the story of the other half of the Hartley twins, Evan, and his tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship with Genevieve. When Genevieve, nicknamed Gen, arrives back in town for her mom’s funeral it is clear that she is in the midst of a maturity metamorphosis. She left the town the day after a blackout bender that found her drunkenly embarrassing herself. She ran away from her relationships, her alcohol dependency, and partying and thrill-seeing ways. When she collides back with her ex, Evan, she is forced to reconcile her past self with who she is now and decide who she wants to become and what that means for her relationships.
This was an intoxicating tale of growth, decision-making, love, and second chances. I ripped right through Good Girl Complex obsessed with the push and pull of Cooper and Mackenzie’s improbable relationship and was so far that Elle Kennedy decided to revisit the Avalon Bay and tell Evan’s backstory and relationship background with Genevieve as well. I can’t get enough of this character development in these devious guys and journey to self-love and acceptance for these strong female leads.
I highly recommend this for those who love love and second chances.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 - 4.5/5
