Hello everyone and hope your Monday has got off to a great start. I’m still doing half days at work because my body clearly hates me 😅 but here I am with my Monday book haul! (Some things don’t change! 🤣) You might already know that certain covers do entice me to buy them and Chouette was really screaming my name. It’s a dark modern fable about mothering an unusual child - an owl baby. It will grip you in its talons and never let go. Why do I feel as if this could be me?? 🤣🤣🤣 I’m taking part in the #greatthomashardyreadalong2022 and it’s been one of my favourite things this year. A Pair Of Blue Eyes is one of the Hardy books I haven’t read and tells the tale of Elfride, daughter of a Rector who faces an agonising choice between two men - the boyish architect Stephen Smith and the older literary man, Henry Knight as the two friends become rivals for her affections. Finally Wuhan, a real chunker of a book at 608 pages. Set in 1937, this epic historical fiction is set in China where Wuhan stood alone in a whirlwind of war and violence against the Japanese army. This forced unprecedented culture and political changes that shaped China’s future. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments. Have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #ohnoanotherbooktogetthrough #chouette #claireoshetsky #apairofblueeyes #thomashardy #wuhan #johnfletcher #historicalfictionbooks #classicnovelsnerd #quirkybook #readinganythingandeverything #obsessedwithbooks📚 #newbooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/ChkjiucrvM9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Two Rivers by Bob Rogers ~ Book Tour https://bit.ly/3QZMhKE
July 1854, Colleton District, South Carolina
A half-dozen years before Abe Lincoln’s inauguration, comes another collision between European immigrants and African abductees that does not end well.
By 1854, the Tiffany family had enslaved over 300 Africans for more than a century on the 1,100-acre slave labor camp that they called the Tiffany Plantation. The Tiffanys were the largest rice producer in South Carolina’s Colleton District. While the toil of enslaved Africans earned untold riches for the Tiffanys, the Africans endured violence inflicted to force increased rice production and profits followed by the indignity of the bodies of loved ones being stolen from their graves and delivered to a medical school.
Determined to put a stop to robberies of African graves was Posey, an eighty-four-year-old man whose ancestors came from the shores of the Bigh of Biafra, now known as Nigeria. It was Posey’s expert river-irrigation skills that made Tiffany crops successful.
More conflict arose when James, the new general manager at Tiffany, realized that Posey’s expertise would be essential for the success of a plantation he planned to gain with ill-gotten money and slave mortgage-backed securities. All the while, the widow Ella, an enslaved nurse-midwife, sought to realize her dream of marrying widower Posey. Matters grew worse when Posey thwarted James’ first attempt to force his attention on Penny, a comely young enslaved wife and mother.
Rich with history and a cast of unforgettable characters, Two Rivers is a sweeping saga of two peoples, European immigrants and African abductees. Together, they experience courtships, infanticide, homicide, rape, rebellions, revenge, sabotage, storms, high-stakes gambling, grave-robbing, counterfeiting, and more.
“De troubles Posey be sees” in Two Rivers reminds one of Southern Gothic storytelling.

PANDORA
by Susan Stokes-Chapman
First of all I would like to say that the atmosphere and writing style were really immersive. I was fully committed to the story from the very beginning and just for this, this book deserve to be read.
That said, there was for me some little flaws. Some related to the story others that were basically my perception of the book even before reading it.
I was convinced that this book was a retelling when in facts it’s an historical fiction with a touch of magical realism.
Obviously the Pandora’s Jar myth is the inspiration of the book but unfortunately it was not really its epicentre but more an accessory to the story. I was expecting chaos, tragedy, mondial cataclysm and all that kind of stuff but no… there was only some sickness and some war issue in the background. So yes I was a bit disappointed about this.
Otherwise, it was really good! The topics were obviously well researched by the author and it was super interesting to read about jewellery, antiquities and how the history influenced both.
The characters too were well developed during the story, and even if I wasn’t really attached to them I really wanted to discover where their path would take them at the end.
I’m really happy to have discovered this quick and easy read and I’m looking forward to this author’s new work!

Book 6 of 2023 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @katequinn5975 “The Alice Network” - I loved it and I know I’m fashionably late to the party as always. I am beginning to love historical fiction more recently. I’ve only read non-fiction for the majority of my life. Women’s stories need to be told and I’m here for it in any genre. Unsung female war SHEro’s of WWI. Great characters. I laughed and cried.👏🏻 #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreview #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks @reesesbookclub https://www.instagram.com/p/CpdUR7cPZP4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I'll make a short work of this. 'How We Disappeared' A 13 year old Kevin is charged with the mission to find the truth about his family's past. The reason? His dying grandmother tells him a secret she almost carries to the grave. At the end of the spectrum is Wang Di, a survivor of the Japanese occupation of Singapore. If you read enough books or watch dramas, you can predict where this is going. The arc of this story encompasses the plight of comfort girls who were held captive, mistreated (putting it mildly) and later abandoned in the face of defeat. I was slightly impatient with the book for having figured out the plot too early and because I had already read a couple of books dealing with the occupation earlier. But that's on me. Is the book well-written? Yes. The characters? Well-formed. The storyline? Fleshed out. It punches all the right spots. If this is your first read about the atrocities committed during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, Singapore and the region- trigger warning. If you want more material on the occupation: 1. The Rape of Nanking 2. Two sisters. Two cultures. One love. One war. Set in 1st century Scotland, SISTERS AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD features a neurodiverse main character and some rather complicated romance! Paperback and kindle: mybook.to/sistersedge From a recent review: “It's a fabulous story, a real page-turner and so well written. It made me think about the passage and circle of time, of the constancy of the land on which we live and the transient nature of human life. Loved it.” #HistoricalFiction #KindleUnlimited #NewRelease #bookstagram #ukbookstagram #ancientworldromance #romanhistory #scottishbooks #scotland #aberdeenshire #romancebooks #taezali #taexali #caledonians #history #historicalfictionbooks (at Aberdeenshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjFK2jyA6dU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 🏔 I was so excites to have the honor to read another Pepper Basham book, and this one did not disappoint. This book takes readers back close to where Basham grew up when Cora Taylor travels from England to these Mountains to find her brother, after her father planned her marriage to a man she certainly would never marry. She soon meets Jeb McAdams, a man that has a past of not so good baggage, but the two have an interesting relationship.   I love, love, love this story. Pepper Basham has a way of writing that draws you into her stories and you just can’t leave. I love that she writes her home town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as her family as inspirations for her stories. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the Blue Ridge Parkway because it is close to where I live, and we have made many, many trips down the Parkway, stopping along the way, getting to know the people. This makes this book so much fun. I really appreciate the cast of characters and the way they grow and develop along the way. I felt I was right there in the story with them, and I Love’s that! Basham deals with some tough issues in Jeb and Cora’s story, and she handles these issues like the professional she is. Readers are sure to see the love, forgiveness and redemption through Jesus in this story, but never fear, it is written in such a subtle way its fits well as part of the story. I Always love they way Basham weaves the faith and the Christian life into the lives of her characters. If you love a good historical fiction that is post WWI, you will love this one I am more that happy to give The Heart of the Mountains by Pepper Basham Five Stars! A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255. #historicalfictionbooks #historicalchristian #historicalchristianfictionwriter #Christian #historicalchristianfiction #pepperbasham #theheartofthemountains https://www.instagram.com/p/ChIQQjhrBdC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Beloved Girls by Harriet Evans Catherine, a successful barrister, vanishes from a train station on the eve of her anniversary. Is it because she saw a figure someone she believed long dead? Or was it a shadow cast by her troubled, fractured mind? The answer lies buried in the past. It lies in the events of the hot, seismic summer of 1989, at Vanes a mysterious West Country manor house where a young girl, Jane Lestrange, arrives to stay with the gilded, grand Hunter family & where a devastating tragedy will unfold. Over the summer, as an ancient family ritual looms closer, Janey falls for each member of the family in turn. She & Kitty, the eldest daughter of the house, will forge a bond that decades later, is still shaping the present . 'We need the bees to survive & they need us to survive. Once you understand that, you understand the history of Vanes, you understand our family.' This is my first read by Harriet Evans & I really enjoyed this sometimes creepy but addictive story! There's dark family secrets & an outsider trying to fit in. There were a few times this book had me feeling the chills down my spine. The story moves back & forth in timelines from the 50s to the 80s & shifts character pov. But it makes for a great build up! You see the past build into the present of Catherine's disappearance. The pace was nice for me & I can't say that I really connected with any of the characters but I did enjoy them especially Sylvia. I did form an idea of the who & when everything happened but not the why but this didn't take away from the story for me if anything it made me want to read faster to understand why it happened. The book has a goth feel which I wasn't expecting. Overall I truly enjoyed the mystery, the intrigue & that sense of foreboding the story gives! Thank Grand Central Pub & Harriet Evans for sharing this thrilling tale with me! #thebelovedgirls #authorharrietevans #grandcentralpubbooks #book #bookreview #mystery #thrillerbook #contemporary #historicalfictionbooks #booknerd #readingisfun #readstagram #bookreviewer #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CdYiSf5M6OZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When #TheSavageInstinct opens, in the late 1800s, Clara Blackstone is being released from the asylum after a breakdown. She plans to live quietly and avoid annoying her husband so she’ll never be sent back to the madhouse, but it turns out that leaving the asylum is just the beginning of her trials and mysteries. Her meetings with accused serial murderer, Mary Ann Cotton, aren’t even the darkest or most surprising part of this page-turner about madness and control. #bookblogger #bookstagram #amreading #bookster #botd #bookoftheday #bookish #historicalfiction #bookgram #suspense #historicalfictionbooks #bookblogging #instaread #readersofinstagram #bloggerlife @mmdelucaauthor @inkshares @bookstagrammerscom https://www.instagram.com/p/CPvZ4qMFg2E/?utm_medium=tumblr
