Today’s book is The Code Book by Simon Singh. This book is EXCELLENT, it’s very clear and well-written and it covers everything you could possibly want to know about codes, from the history to the math to the official terminology (ie, deciphering vs decrypting something). I’m not too far in yet, but so far I would say that I highly recommend it!! :]
Here’s a peek inside:

This is a page I found particularly interesting; it’s the manuscript from the ancient Arabic man who invented the first method to decode monoalphabetic ciphers. If you don’t know what that is and are curious to find out, read the book! :P This whole chapter was a deeply interesting and thought-provoking look into history, linguistics, and logic. Fascinating stuff!!

I heard that it's Trans Rights Readathon! 🏳️‍⚧️🎉
Alas, my schedule this week doesn't look like it's going to permit me to finish any books whatsoever haha, but I thought I'd chip in with a recommendation that I've been making my way through slowly over the past few weeks - Before We Were Trans, by Kit Heyam!
This is a nonfiction book in which Heyam makes the fascinating point that our current trans history tends to focus very much on “clear-cut” examples - i.e. historical figures who identified as a different gender from a young age, whose own words and articulation of their experiences matches our current understanding of gender as closely as possible, who sought gender-affirming medical care, etc. But this is a very narrow (not to mention Euro-centric!) lens, and cuts out huge swathes of people who – even if we can never know if they themselves would identify as “transgender” in the modern sense today – nevertheless lived trans or trans-adjacent experiences.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this book so far, and can’t wait to finish it! If you’re able to today, please consider donating to the Transgender Law Center, the largest trans-led organization fighting to protect trans rights in the US, or Trans Media Watch, who help hold the UK media to account on its reporting on trans issues and aid trans people experiencing media harassment.

This has been just about as terrible as expected—and that’s the best review I could possibly give this book. I remember Don Pendleton’s ‘Executioner’ series from my bookstore days, but that was back when I was into serious artsy literary fiction because that’s what you have to read to be a “real writer.” Over the last several years I’ve embraced my love of pulpy genre writing. But while Loren Estleman, Robert Parker, Richard Stark, Simon Green, and anything put out under Hard Case Crime arguably all have something to offer the genre, whether it’s reinventing or just having fun, this ‘Joe Copp’ series is ridiculously terrible. Copp has been terrible in a dated, cliched, laughably cheesy way that would probably be taken seriously by a red pill alpha-cel. The book’s entertaining moments or clever lines were buried by the character’s ranting diatribes about society and how persecuted he is for being so manly and awesome. So, this will be a one-off read, as it’s exactly what I expected Pendleton to be from the covers of ‘The Executioner.’ #sobaditsjustbad #judgeitbythecover 📚🎧 #gsbbooks #gsbquotes #gasstationburrito #books #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #reading #currentlyreading #whatImreading #bookaholic #booklove #bookquotes #reading2022 #goodreads #donpendleton #coppforhire #privatedetective #pulpfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm9RoocOXHA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you could read only one book for the rest of the year which one would it be? 👀🍂📚 . Isabel says she would pick our edition of The Complete Novels of Jane Austen! This is smart because our edition is huge. 📚🧡 . I guess I would just stay with my current read, Ordinary Monsters, because it’s also big & it will take me 3526 days to finish. 😂 Or maybe should have just restarted Lord of the Rings. 🧐 . . #whatimreading #booksandcoffee #bookstoread #coffeeandbooks #booksaremagic #bookstagramespañol #bookishgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/ChLFHqPpuip/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lunar Love, by Lauren Kung Jessen, is a sweet romcom with rival Chinese-zodiac matchmaking agencies. There are multiple meet-cutes, good friends and bad puns, a special grandmother-granddaughter relationship (another reason this is a good read for fans of The Matchmaker's Gift), lots of tasty Chinese food and baked treats, and zany rom-com dating mishaps. I was going to find some 2023 CNY decor for this one, but it turns out the theme of the book is about enjoying and respecting the Chinese zodiac while not being completely locked into the rules... so here's my tiger year tea caddy and my ox year journal! One of my favorite Irish quotes: "Here’s to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one!" 🍀 Today was the most lovely day I've had in forever. Spent the afternoon reading on the patio - started and finished an entire book today! Murder, Mississippi River bayou, bit of magic and mystery, so good. That's my 3rd book I've finished this week. Huge nerd, 🤓 Then kitchen dance party with the wild child. Music loud, singing even louder, I hope the neighbors like Olivia Rodrigo, lol. She baked brownies to top with mint chip ice cream, I cooked potatoes and pork chops. 💚 Now, she's leading some epic online Dungeons and Dragons shenanigans, and I'm taking a bath with the biggest bubbles. Tomorrow the wild one's dad takes her to the salon - she's going shorter and dying her hair blue and is *ecstatic* we finally allowed her hair to match her personality, lol. Then Sunday she has a mall date with friends from musical theater for lunch and chaos. You have no idea how happy my heart is to see her happy for a minute. 💙💙💙 Cheers to the weekend! If you're out, drink 3 green beers and eleventy seven whiskey shots for me. 😘 #stpatricksday #shenanigans #bubblebaths #sunshinevibes #bookishgirl #readinginthesun #booksarelife #booksaremagic #momlife #singlemomlife #beautifullife❤️ #makelifebeautiful #littlethings #everydaylife #whatimreading (at Terrace Heights, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp6ulg5sMut/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
