Bad Boy
A few meta-type thoughts about Bad Boy, now the dust has started to settle.  There could hardly have been more hype in the run up to the release of Shingeki FLY, but Bad Boy certainly delivered.  It’s classic Isayama; for such a short chapter it really packs an emotional punch, blending real pathos and tragedy with shockingly graphic violence and body horror.  It doesn't really add anything to the over all plot, which is to be expected, but it does provide insight into Levi’s character and answers one question that fans have been speculating about for years.
The story of why Levi holds his tea cup in such a peculiar way isn’t new. Isayama mentioned this in a magazine interview (I think?) way back in 2014
Q: …why he has such way of holding cup? Isayama: About that, I was thinking of drawing this one day. When he was a kid, Levi was living in slums and poverty. He was yearning for a life in clean & neat environment (not rich life). When he finally obtained the tea and tea set those he has been desperately wanted, he was rejoicing that finally he can drink it. But when he started to grip on the handle and lift up the cup, the handle came off and his cup was shattered. He was so traumatised by this experience and that’s why he changed his way of holding cups to not using the handle.
However we now know that the cup belonged to his mother and the extraordinary lengths Levi went to recover it. What is new is that we finally have confirmation of when Levi’s Ackerpowers were awakened.  Fans have been arguing about this for years; some thought it was when he killed the man with the knife immediately before Kenny left, others suggested it was when Farlan and Isabel were killed. Now we finally have an answer.  It’s not exactly clear how much time has lapsed between Kenny taking Levi in, his powers awakening, and Kenny leaving, however the fact that Kuchel’s tea set hadn’t yet made its way to the surface suggests that not much time had passed at all.
Levi’s description of his powers awakening is fascinating;
“Strangely enough I didn’t doubt what was happening to me at that moment. The pain had vanished, my head was calm, as if it had been immersed in water. Clear instructions on what to do came to my mind. I simply followed them one by one.”
This is the most information we’ve ever had about the famous Ackerpowers and goes some way to explaining Levi and Mikasa’s preternatural calm and focus when they're fighting.   They really only succumb to panic and despair when their loved ones are threatened.  Think of Mikasa in Shiganshina and at Fort Salta, and Levi when Farlan and Isabel die and when he allows Zeke to escape after Erwin rode out to his death.
The panel illustrating Levi’s powers awakening is also interesting as it looks very like a Titan transformation. This suggests there is more than a grain of truth in what the Yeagers said about Ackermans being a by-product of Titan science, who were able to access the power of the Titans without becoming Titans themselves.
Tumblr media
It’s not difficult to draw a direct line between the abuse and persecution Levi suffered as a child, with his determination to use his power to protect those in need.  Initially he used his strength to protect the vulnerable people of the Underground, such as Isabel, however once he met Erwin he was able to exert his power to serve an even higher goal - saving humanity. Isayama discussed this in the Answers Guidebook way back in 2006 and I think his comments are worth repeating here.
Isayama With the heroes of American comics, conflicts dealing with the situation “with great power, comes great responsibility” have been depicted. In Levi’s case, if he had no power, he would probably have been an ordinary person with no responsibilities but, as a consequence of having power, that he became a person excessively burdened with responsibility. Kenny talked about “everyone… was a slave to something…”, when he put the question to Levi “what is yours!?”, Levi himself too perceived it. That he himself too was a slave in regard to his own strength. The sense of duty that “I must become a hero”. …the same thing can be said of Mikasa too but…, for the Ackerman family, in the service of their master, there are many people who are able to manifest their power to its maximum.
[Translation by @tsuki-no-ura]
I think it's also very in keeping with Levi's character that he remained devoted to saving humanity after the Rumbling; providing succour to the children in the refugee camp, and working to renew the environment destroyed by Eren's genocide, despite his injuries and regardless of whether he retained his Ackerpowers.
The title of the chapter, Bad Boy, is also interesting. No one actually calls Levi a “bad boy” in the chapter (though he is called worse) which suggests that this is how Levi sees himself.  It makes me wonder how much he internalised the thug’s insinuation that his mother would have been disappointed in him, and it also recalls Levi’s speech to Historia and the 104th, where he says he’s fine playing the role of the violent lunatic.  Poor baby.
Tumblr media
Another point the chapter clarifies is the origin of Levi’s belief that Kenny was his father.  To be honest, it’s hardly surprising that Levi assumed this considering Kenny clearly had some kind of relationship with his mother and took him in without question. Still, knowing that the seed of that belief was planted by a thug who was willing to torture and kill a child, or sell him into sexual slavery, really twists the knife.
Tumblr media
[Translation by krtk.]
I am a little sad that we didn’t see more of Kenny in the chapter, but his presence certainly looms large.
I had expected to see more of Kuchel but at the same time I’m almost glad we didn’t.  Her life was brutal beyond measure and we’ve already seen her tragic death. Several fans have suggested that the reason we only see Kuchel in partial profile is because Levi’s memories of her are so hazy, all he really recalls is her grace 😢
It’s remarkable that Kuchel was able to retain such poise and grace despite living in such desperate squalor.  @momtaku has made the point that Kuchel appears to have been born into at least modest comfort, judging from Grandpa Ackermans’ home, which would explain where her elegance and also her fancy china came from.  It’s heartbreaking that both she and Levi clung on to this small memento of a better life.
Tumblr media
Levi’s devotion to his mother, his desire to emulate her grace and cling on to her belongings is devastating, is very much in keeping with everything we know about his character.  Levi has boundless compassion, is deeply loyal, and never forgets those he loves, whether it’s Farlan and Isabel, Erwin, or his squad.  He’s also very sentimental; saving his mother’s tea set, and drinking tea evokes a direct connection to Kuchel and the only good thing he remembers from the squalor and cruelty of his childhood. This makes Erwin’s willingness to indulge his sentimentality and bend the rules to procure a steady supply of high quality tea for Levi all the more poignant.
There's been some debate about Gabi's reaction to Levi's story in the final panel...
Tumblr media
Some people have interpreted her expression as holding back tears, while others have suggested she's trying not to laugh. I'm definitely in the stifled laughter camp. It just seems so very typical of Gabi and her relationship with Levi...
Gabi: - winds Levi up - Levi: - trauma dumps - Gabi: - stifled laughter / more wind up - Falco: - actually upset - "Would you guys stop??" Onyankopon: - shade -
It's also very typical of Isayama to poke fun at his characters like this, and it stops the story from tipping over into bathos.
There is one burning question that Bad Boy doesn’t answer and it’s this - what tf was kid Levi doing in Mr Smith’s classroom??
Tumblr media
Despite hoping against hope, I never really expected Isayama to answer this, because he does love to troll his readers.  Is it too much to hope that sometime down the line he’ll reappear with another chapter called School Boy??

a place between unreality and lucidity, or understanding the intentions of Chapter 12
CONTENT WARNING: DISCUSSIONS OF DEATH, SUICIDE, AND ABUSE. I ALSO TALK A LOT ABOUT LUCID DREAMING, WHICH CAN BE DISSOCIATIVE FOR READERS, SO PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
SPOILER WARNING: REFERENCED YUME NIKKI AND OMORI SPOILERS, AND OBVIOUSLY, DREAMSCAPE SPOILERS.
We're back bois, and we're back with my favourite chapter.
I love Chapter 12 so much, the same way I adore the Truth Sequence in Omori. Originally I was going to compare the two, but I realised there's little overlap other than the intentions they're written with.
...so I wrote about the intentions instead. The little bitch boy intentions. You'll see what I mean.
Buckle up, this one takes some insane turns. I had wild epiphanies while churning all this out in a couple hours. I think I may be losing my mind.
understanding what I mean by "lucidity", and discussing dreams as plot devices
Lucidity is a very particular type of plot device that I find difficult to describe - it is a specific type of fragmented narrative that fragments location, exploring an impossibility that often has links to deeper meaning. Typically it is an abstract way of foreshadowing or revealing something to the reader, and it mirrors the concept of a "liminal space".
Dreams in texts have been used as a method of foreshadowing for hundreds of years. While the human brain has no ability to predict the future, but only reframe the past, the uncontrollable fragments of memory that are spat back out at you during unconsciousness have captured human fascination since we first started sleeping.
Dreamscape itself isn't a dream, but it is a different form of consciousness, and the creator has stated that Chapter 12 draws a lot from lucid dreaming, which suggests this counts as part of the 'Lucidity' narrative trope. As someone who does not dream much, I find this shit fascinating. Like I'm sure it's horrific as hell but. It seems so fucking cool.
Perhaps some of the best examples of the use of lucid dreaming to form narrative are Yume Nikki and its fangames, as well as Omori. Yume Nikki was a catalyst for the creation of many RPG maker horror games, and it's an excellent piece of work. No concrete story, just wandering an endless abyss of Madotsuki's mind, observing the horrors within it. The fangames branched off this concept (I personally recommend .flow ) and added more aspects, but never being concrete about the trauma.
Things are illogical in the Yume Nikki dreamverse, but they don't have to be logical, and things don't have to make sense to the player - it is purely up for speculation. At the same time, we know it has to mean something. There's an innate sense of exploration and meaning in dreams, despite the real life version often being meaningless bullshit.
This is where Omori explicitly diverts - it outright states what happened on the Recital day, in a short, distorted sequence known ominously as "The Truth". While the entire game is about lucid dreaming, this section captures the horror due to the illogical nature of it, where Sunny travels from his living room, to a hospital, to stairs, his bedroom, backstage... things are wrong. At the same time, the player is focused on completing the album and collecting the polaroids, with the confusing nature of the locations building to the horror of the final moment.
Despite all this, none of these sequences are the big moment, or even nearing the climax.
Yume Nikki doesn't have a big moment, unless you see the ending as significant enough for that title. It is a game about wandering unreality, and without a plot, it can't have a climax. It uses lucidity to provide a sense of narrative, even when there isn't one, tricking the player into trying to comprehend an impossible universe.
Omori is not building up to that that one sequence, but rather, it is a stepping stone leading to the Final Duet, which is the true climax of the game. It's an emotional release for Sunny and the player, a sense of finality in a game without a proper "ending". The Truth sequence is merely a way for the player to understand plot and build horror, and without the Truth's photo album... we would understand nothing at all. An impossible universe.
This leads to my big theory...
the purpose of chapter 12 - you can't understand it
Chapter 12 is a lying piece of shit and won't admit to us more than cookie crumbs about the future of the Dreamscape universe. And I still love it. And here's why.
Due to the abstract nature of it, we can't understand it. Perhaps Sunny can, to some extent, but since we're not sure the cause nor purpose for it, we can't understand it. We can speculate, but we can't understand. Just like Yume Nikki, we might never properly understand what each segment means.
Here's some little nuggets I've been scrambling through for information.
The beginning talks about time and distortion of it, which mimics some of the issues with time Sunny has in real life. This may be foreshadowing his eviction or declining physical state.
Body horror is incredibly prevalent, particularly self-mutilation. This has several implications, but it likely hints to Sunny's feelings for himself. It may also foreshadow what Mari looked like during the Recital day scene, which I'm starting to realise hasn't actually been shown yet. Interesting.
While this is one of the first times we see Mari as more than a virus or a corpse in the text, it's also completely distorted by Sunny's unreliable narration. Despite the slightly manipulative conversation held between them, Sunny is completely frozen in grief, desperate to beg for her forgiveness.
Sunny sits there with her pain in that hospital, insisting he deserves it. It hints further to Sunny's declining mental state, but that doesn't tell us anything more than his own self-loathing. Both this and the above point foreshadow Mari's potentially abusive nature.
Sunny is completely determined to stay within the lucid dream, and is also very insistent that Mari is somewhere at the end, which turns out to be right. How he knows this is not shown to the reader.
Segments of this are related to Mari's own memory, which provides us with a better understand of the VHS system, and of the accident that lead to her suicide.
The lucid dream is a representation of Sunny's unending trauma through what he perceives to be Mari's eyes, perhaps even a representation of what he feels he needs to do for her forgiveness.
We also learn a bit more about Pianoboy, who we know is a clone of Sunny, and he specifically highlights a connected feeling of isolation. At the same time, it has to go further than that, but we're again limited by understanding. There's more, but not enough to guess what 'more' means.
But those tidbits mean nothing. And I can't do much more than spew nonsense about segments, with no ultimate conclusion.
Because Chapter 12 is not designed to be understood, but rather, it's something to look back on when you finally do understand. It's foreshadowing in its most complex form, hinting ominously to what you don't understand. It is also similar to Black Space in this way - no-one can figure out the truth of the Recital Day from Black Space alone.
I could spend hours trying to understand every symbol, every room, the essence of Chapter 12 itself, and fuck me because i totally would but ultimately, it's all fragments of a deeper narrative, more complex than our limited understanding.
And it's a horrible, horrible thing to do to a reader. An unanswerable segment, dangling understanding right in front of their nose, but making it unreachable. Haunting them with the human desire to see patterns in chaos. What utter cruelty. How could you do this to me, @omoriboii. Why would you do this to me, the analysis God, with the most overthink-y brain in existence, and yet give me, ultimately, nothing to lead to. Why leave me a crumb to look back on, something I can never understand with the information I hold. I may be stupid, but I can understand when I am beat.
It's perfection.
why even torture someone with the inability to understand?
Building horror is incredibly difficult, because it's so easy to do foreshadowing incredibly wrong. We've all seen horror movies that are so bad they're funny, relying entirely on petty jumpscares, terrible props and showing off the killer way too fast-
Wait a minute. Showing off the killer too fast ruins everything? Dammit, I wanted to flex my big sharp knife. That's right guys. I'm the serial killer of this blog. ?????
Anyway, demonstrating the inability to understand something to the reader is a common feeling that gets the emotional brain hooked and the cogs whirring in the logical segments. You need to understand. You develop theories, you discuss them with others, seeking evidence, only to find something that changes your view, ruining everything, forcing you to start again. Being teased is fun. I am kinky
That's my favourite feeling of all time. It's why I spent hours searching for that again after I played Omori. I still remember my first theories of the truth of the game, right up until the one I had just before I discovered the real Truth. Even after that, there was more for me to analyse. Analysis. I love analysis. Yk?
I love a good challenge, and analysing these segments are so much of a challenge that I actually can't do it, which is why I get so hyped over it. Why do I do this to myself?
I actually don't really know how to end this, but I think you get my point. It's fun. I like it. I love suffering. uhh. dreams cool.
new bit: song i wrote this listening to.
today's song, the main title theme from Tomorrow Won't Come for those without.

i needed a reminder of what horrible liminality feels like, and that goddamn game does it better than anyone. i love it so much. thanks, etherane, your games cursed me with a sick desire for unreality.

What will this horror game be about? Are there any particular tropes/themes you want to incorporate there? 💜
hey!! thanks so much for asking!! :-))) in short, it’s a choice based visual novel in a dark fantasy setting, called Divine Omen. i plan on making it episodic with 5 parts planned so far. here’s a little teaser i stole from the game’s page (which isn’t available yet…call that early access 😉):
“Avan did his best to ignore the nightmare from the night before. It was something he'd learned to live with - something he'd dealt with since childhood. It was easy to write them off until the pain he'd felt in his dreams followed him into the morning.
The young man holds his aching hand as he makes his way to the watchtower he'd been summoned to. A little girl was found dead in the woods outside the city early that morning. Her body was covered in black blood, a sign that something sinister lurks outside the city walls. A number of reports on the Guard Captain's desk suggest she's just one of many victims. Against the wishes of the Lord, Avan is tasked with investigating the scene where the young girl's body was found. The night before he was set to depart, two strange figures visited his dreams. They came with an eerie message:
“I know what you're looking for, and you'll find it in the cave. But not now."
It didn't mean anything. At least not then.”
with that outta the way, as far as themes and tropes go…poor old Avan is the classic tortured artist trope. this guy needs therapy. he was involved in an accident at a young age that left him permanently scarred and vilified by the townsfolk. his brother doesn’t like him. his father curses the ground he walks on. the only person who can stand to be around him is his boyfriend (yay, love interest!). poor guy doesn’t have much going for him. Avan sees the poor girl’s death as a chance at redemption, but he’s slowly coming to realize that the little girl was only the beginning. the real story is far more sinister. love that for him!
alongside Avan there are a number of other characters to get to know - some worth knowing, others…hardly tolerable. and everyone has their own motive.
we still get to see plenty of action, but part 1’s focus is more on setting up the general plot. as we get further into the story, however…your actions in the game can have serious consequences. think of a game like Until Dawn - Avan’s dreams serve as the totems you find in the game - hinting at what actions you need to take. if you pay close attention, you’ll know just what to do to save a life. otherwise, the blood is on Avan’s hands.
hopefully that gives you an idea of what to expect! sorry for the monologue, i’m just excited to share, so again, thank you for asking. it really means a lot🖤

DO NOT REPOST, EDIT, PRINT FOR COMMERCIAL USE OR BULK PRINTING
DO NOT FEED MY ART TO AI PLEASE
AI IMAGE GENERATOR USERS DO NOT INTERACT
TRACING& COPYING ARE FORBIDDEN AND BLOCKED. IF YOU ARE TOO AN ARTIST PLEASE RESPECT THIS UNIVERSAL RULE (UNLESS MEME/PARODY). “HIGHLY INSPIRED” WITHOUT CREDIT WILL BE BLOCKED AS WELL. MY HOURS OF HARDWORK AND BRAIN JUICE ARE NOT FOR YOU TO USE IN THIS WAY. I APPRECIATE THE LIKE BUT PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT, DO NOT FOLLOW.
THIS IS A MATURE BLOG OFTEN ENGAGING WITH DARK CONTENT, HOWEVER I STILL HAVE DNIs.
THIS BLOG CONTAINS NSFW, BLOOD AND GORE DRAWINGS, TONS OF TOXIC RELATIONSHIP AND OTHER TW (ALL PROPERLY TAGGED UNLESS I FORGOT ONE OR TWO. IF I DO PLEASE TELL ME!!!)
FULL DNI, DOS AND DON’T, FANDOM CONTENT WARNINGS BELOW. I AM BAD AT EXPRESSING SO IT GETS LENGTHY BUT UM HOPE IT CLEARS UP EVERYTHING
THIS USER DOES NOT ACCEPT INSULTS, VIOLENCE, ABUSE, SLURS, AND DEATH THREATS TOWARDS HUMAN IN REAL LIFE.
What to expect or not here:
⚠️VERY IMPORTANT
I can tolerate/will create darker themed content when it comes to Danny Johnson or Tom Riddle, as well as some other slashers or mature fandoms and villains. I would say this is NOT a safe blog (I mean come on those are bad guys what do you expect! Don’t be too delulu to a point you gonna make them a good guy). However I do not tolerate any form of violence, abuse and discrimination in real life. Seriously, get help if you come across to any of these.
All my darker artworks are NOT for you to follow irl (can’t believe I still have to say this in 2020s do people use their brains nowadays)— It is for me to explore darker concepts, trying to figure out how, for example, how people attracted by psycho criminals, WITHOUT using an existing criminal and hurting anyone irl. Bc everyone is FAKE, they don’t exist, it’s FICTIONAL. Also, to explore my own/seen traumas. I turn personal issues into NSFW kinks or simply dark shit etc, and cope with it as a fictional content. Not exactly the best idea I know but this keeps me sane and overthinking about the past irl. I do not tolerate death/abuse threats and insults towards human in real life, it’s stupid. And all of you should also keep every dark shit fictional content in fictional world. We do not need anymore crime irl thank you very much. Think before you act or talk. Fandom is not that serious to a point you wish death and suggesting violence upon someone.
For my Haikyuu or Naruto art those are mostly safe as hell (my opinion) just loving caring and tons of smooch smooch!😭💖 OMFG I MEAN BOKUAKA HOW YOU GONNA LOOK AT THEM AND THINK OF ANYTHING DARK HELLO EXCUSE ME
Generally I’m open-minded to all ships and kinks (even with complicated relationships where abuse are mentioned for plot reasons, or larger age difference), but l0lic0ns and ped0s you can do us a favour go fk yourself🖕😘🖕While I’m in horror movies fandom, I do not support real life criminals. If you do or even a delulu fan of them please stay away from every living beings, also fk you too🫶💓 I don’t engage with inc3st contents, however will bear it for past trauma, but will not read purely inc3st stories. Pseudo/step c3st sometimes okay (depends on context really). Also I draw& read& reblog dead doves, which contains different TW like abuse/non-con/dub-con, you have been warned!!!! If it’s dark content with NSFW, please only recommend me with characters at least over age of consent but much more better if they are of age coz tbh I’m more into adult relationships really ahem. DO NOT SEND ME CREEPY PED0 (UNDER AGE OF CONSENT) SHIT THROUGH “ASK ME”. YOU WILL BE BLOCKED AND REPORTED. Also usual DNIs coz I’m traumatised by how stupid they are considering I am the most stupid people on this planet— c0mmies/ z!onists/ transphobes/ TERF/ homophobes/ biphobes/ typical fujoshis who complains about hetero but do same shit if it’s gay, do not interact.
ABOUT NSFW OR COMMISSION— In all circumstances, I cannot and will not create NSFW art piece regarding minors under the age of consent. PLEASE DO NOT EVEN ASK COME ON DUDE…
Also I DO NOT accept any NSFW commission, even it’s purely about adult characters. Adult characters with a bit of suggestive content, maybe um okay base on context. If it’s a pairing or character(s) that is at the age of consent (not an adult), and is from NSFW story/series, but you wish to make SFW art, please check with me before commissioning. Coz sometimes I read darker content but really do not have the heart to draw it if it’s too much for me…However let me be clear again— ANY NSFW OR SUGGESTIVE ART OF MINOR CHARACTERS UNDER THE AGE OF CONSENT IS NOT OKAY FOR ME. I’M NOT COMFORTABLE DOING IT. DON’T EVEN BOTHER ASKING. PLEASE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I don’t post NSFW art directly (artistic nudes, maybe; explicit nudes? Nah). However, I talk nonsense/ adult jokes/ head canon on my socials, so please DNI if you are not comfortable with. I can’t check every single account before I reply, so minors and people who are not pleased with NSFW topics: if you see this post, do not engage with my posts even they are SFW. Sometimes posting slightly NSFW (aka suggestive) art or head canons directly, but will still tag it as NSFW.
I create art for my inner peace and needs. I cannot babysit and accommodate everyone, so, if you don’t like, don’t engage. The definition of “problematic ships” differs from person to person coz fk me people nowadays overuse this too much to a point idk what is & what is not…

⚠️IMPORTANT: It’s totally okay to consume my version of Jed Olsen X OC content and imagining in your brain it’s you or whoever his S/O is, but I block people who draw my version of Jed with themselves/self-inserts/OCs, or generally drawing him. It’s a culture here: impolite to draw someone’s design without permission😭💦 So please don’t take it personally, it’s just me not comfortable with sharing my design of Jed with other people’s self insert/OC. Also I have many plans for him so when people draws him (even not a ship art), it might actually interfere with my WIP sketches and ideas which makes me so awkward like “should I continue when someone drew it already???” However I am glad many people like him! Thank you for giving him love he really doesn’t deserve it he belongs in the trash💥
PS. There are some designs out here alike which of course is fine, I do not own the character himself, but I‘ll stay away or block if it’s too alike/ overly referenced. I stay quiet about things I don’t like so unless shoving it in my face, I will just walk away🧍‍♀️💦Need not worry!

ALSO THAT ONE TOMIONE ANON WHO KEEPS ANNOYING WRITERS WHEN THEY WRITE FOR OTHER PAIR— DO NOT INTERACT.
Don’t follow me for ships. See me as a cheap ass £10 all you can eat cushion buffet please. No quality of art here. Just pure delulu and bad drawing skills.
Naruto
KakaSaku, ObiRin, ObiKaka and InoSaku.
⚠️Note that my main ship in this fandom is KakaSaku, but only when Sakura is of age and usually I ship them in same age AU. And I don’t ship them if they were very close as student and teacher before Sakura of age (it’s really weird). I also love them as platonically best friends, the way their personalities work together if they were born in the same generation, not the teenage-creepy-forbidden-love-in-classroom-gro0ming type of shit, in case you start wondering. If there’s no KakaSaku tag or it is described as “platonic”, it means that art is not a romantic ship art. There might be some head canon etc about teenage SKR having a crush on KKS or both of them feeling butterflies in stomach, but I will always prefer Kakashi not stepping over the boundaries in some close to canon AUs. He is a very nice person and would never take advantage of SKR, I think. It’s true crushing on older people like this happens irl, so I admire the storytelling, but OOC af if KKS lets himself be this low. If you are still concerned or feeling uncomfortable about this ship, please block me. ALSO DON’T RECOMMEND REAL FKED UP CONTENT TO ME that was the reason I stopped drawing coz mentally grossed out I had to stay away from the fandom for at least a while💀 I swear those KKSK doujins from like 15+years ago grossed me a lot if you know which ones you know… hell I don’t wanna spread those out no one should ever read that… would do anything to unsee the cover of those doujins MY FKING BRAIN WAS DAMAGED FK

So with all this TNEOL criticism coming back around and some absolutely heinously Bad Faith takes that the only people who took issue with it are people mad about hcs, I'm going to take some time out of my writing to propose how simple the Actual Plot would be to fix and why hiring someone who has only watched half of the series they're writing for and never even seen the character they're supposed to be writing, forcing them to watch everything at 1.5x speed and turning enjoying a canon into a necessary research assignment (and it SHOWS) is a bad idea.
While I do have ideas on how to improve the plot that range from having Aldreda and Brevyn combined into one person (giving Lucien dead little sister angst and a "no good deed goes unpunished" angle to his arc) to Brevyn being a rival/idol that he kills at some point (and not a love interest) to hammer home Lucien's "kill your idol" mindset, I'm going to be kind and just script doctor the plot as written, fixing the glaring continuity errors and Lucien's lack of agency in his own story.
THE FORMAT. Presumably the story as pitched was "Lucien backstory leading into his version of canon events," which... fine. I think some of the fault lies on that pitch, because it's way too much to shove into a 300-page book, but maybe only Sarah J Maas can drop six hundred pages and it hit the bestseller list on impact. Whatever. There's a simple solution to this that also fixes the extremely egregious error of omitting the VERY PLOT IMPORTANT EVENT of Lucien having spent considerable time in the Astral Sea.
Start with the shattering. Have Lucien's backstory come out in alternating chapters of significant events in his life as a framing device as he pieces himself together in Cognouza. This highlights the author's strength and what she was clearly hired for and enjoyed writing- the eldritch horror- while still showing us how Lucien came to be here. You can introduce the Somnovem and play with the cosmic horror elements and weird formatting stuff that people actually came here to see, because, let's be real, no one who is reading this is not a fan of the show and if you want to be weird, why not start weird? This also fixes another glaring issue I had which was the Somnovem and Lucien bickering throughout the back half. They believed Lucien was loyal the whole time and the only reason the bickering was added was to give some excuse for why he betrayed them- an excuse that wasn't necessary because CANON ALREADY GAVE ONE. You just SKIPPED IT. The juxtaposition of Lucien discovering the Somnovem in flashbacks vs him growing to resent them as we rapidly ascend into present day would be insane, plus it provides a parallel to Molly. Both start out empty at the beginning of the two year gap, but Lucien is desperate to regain his memories and sense of self.
THE BACKSTORY. I think if you have to keep the very Caleb-expy and borderline Widomauk-pandering backstory with the burning of the cart with Mom, Dad, and Sock Brother in it, you need to change one thing to make it make sense- that the parents and Elric weren't tieflings. That's it. It makes Elric being the favorite make sense, it establishes the Tavelles frequently have been making dodgy deals with hellish entities (Azraharai is supposed to be a night hag presumably but she's, uh, hot, which is weird for a hag) and that Lucien and Aldreda are proof of that transgression and therefore their mistreatment has some background to it.
Lucien's decision to join the Orders needs to have been HIS decision. My suggestion is have him refuse to leave Brevyn alone until she brings him and Cree with her, establishing two things; that Lucien wants to be like Brevyn and that Brevyn has a soft spot for Lucien's tenacity and refusal to back down which will give SOME credence to why they're so In Love later.
The Azrahari debacle needs to have been framed as Lucien deciding to go kill her while NOT on contract and the conflict is Lucien begging Cree to help him go off book and murder someone they weren't hired to because WHY are the Claret Orders sleeping on this woman? I also think removing the contracts entirely and focusing on the Orders being religious and hypervigilant would go a long way to avoid the Witcher allegations, while also pointing out a hypocrisy- they're focused primarily on the Marrow Valley and not the Quannah Breach, and the whole reason Lucien joined was also partially so he could hunt down Azrahari. This shows that Lucien has no respect for Authority and also starts proving that he can convince people to break off and do things on their own. Having this be the mission that all the Tombtakers (save Brevyn- I'll get there) go on together (maybe Cree insists they get more help) that establishes their bond would make the fight more dynamic and remove the weird "lol vengeance is hollow" feelings from a situation that really didn't need that message, while also tying two plots together.
From here, we can establish that Lucien going off-book and doing his own thing is something he does frequently. Having the Tombtakers all go to the mission in Rexxentrum together is another way to give us a fun Tombtakers group scene, because what the book needed was more establishment of their bond to run parallel to the Nein and make everything that happens later more poignant. From here, everything with Vess and Aldreda can continue as planned, but THEN Brevyn shows up to bring them back to the Orders. Lucien, since he had planned to run off and leave the Tombtakers high and dry anyway with Aldreda (this establishes how quickly he discards his friends), is fully committed to just leaving the Orders and the Tombtakers agree. Brevyn decides she wants to follow. THIS is what sparks their romance- maybe Brevyn has always been attracted to him and he's always idolized her and this leads to some emotional reveals. I think, ultimately, the romance has to be shown to be extremely unhealthy with Lucien seeing Brevyn as someone so glorious (repeating the motif of her being "the favorite" that the book didn't do anything with) that if she chooses him, then he must be special and Brevyn... just liking him. I think Brevyn could stand to be less girlbossy, because Lucien is supposed to be the girlboss of this novel. An OC in this situation does not need to overshadow the actual protagonist which was my main problem with her. I didn't pay $20 for Ensign Oakbender to be The Best At Life and the Reason Lucien Does Everything Right Down To Wearing Open Shirts and Liking Butterflies.
So from here, we can establish the Tombtakers getting a reputation worthy enough that Vess would want to hire them for mercenary work. The Tombtakers are RARELY EVER shown to be fucking competent at any point in the book (seriously how are the tribes holding down a group of blood mages- that should have been the moment Lucien terrified the entire town into respecting him), which is ridiculous because they are in canon, barring Lucien's failed survival checks, which were as much a fault of the group as a whole. It's just funny to blame him.
I think the best way to deal with the Brevyn Death Scene is for Lucien to find the book, read a little of it in private, have his first dream of the Somnovem and excitedly run to tell his gf who is just "um that's sketch" and you can do this one of two ways: the first being that she just thinks that's sketch (and even if you can't call it that, you CAN have her use Grim Psychometry on it because someone should have) and the second being the more pragmatic approach which is that if Lucien takes something that DeRogna has explicitly said she wants (all magical items), he's putting the group at risk of not being paid. Lucien reacting badly to Brevyn not yes manning him (and possibly abandoning him the way Aldreda did- REMEMBER HE HATES BEING ABANDONED) gives credence to his tight response to Caduceus's plea for perspective. It also makes him worry that because she's Perfect Brevyn, she'll turn the other Tombtakers against him. This results in a conflict and you can go two ways with this too- either Lucien kills her on accident and lies about it or their fight starts the clusterfuck that leads to her getting mashed to paste. (I like the latter because if Lucien chooses to save the book and leaves Brevyn to die, it parallels what happens with Cree.) Either way, Brevyn's death is ruled as an accident and Vess and the Tombtakers part on sour, but not as ridiculous as they do in the book, terms. Lucien reads the book. Insanity ensues.
THE SECOND ACT. So as stated in my first point, the first act would end with Lucien being brought back as he remembers the most recent events of his life and having made the decision to subjugate the Somnovem. This part of the story is generally considered to be better than the first half so mainly what needs to be fixed are the glaring contradictions to canon events, the Tombtakers' incomptence, the Somnovem's presence, and the way Brevyn hangs over the narrative- using her more as a symbol for how much Lucien sacrifices to get what he wants would be best. Personally, I think Head!Molly needs to bring up Aldreda as his "humanizing" factor with Brevyn being solely used as a reminder of what is going to happen to all of his friends. This allows Aldreda to still haunt the narrative since she was FORGOTTEN ABOUT.
As for Molly... Look, I have a mixed bag of emotions on some of Head!Molly's shit and I'm not going to deconstruct that here. I do think his arguments need to be less "why don't you like my friends they could be your friends" though, especially since if you're going to do a Tombtakers story, you need to commit to the fact that the Nein were absolutely shitty to them for no reason from THEIR PERSPECTIVE. If you can't commit to the villain-centered morality in regards to the heroes' actions in a narrative about villains, you don't need to be writing this story. Molly's arguments look stupid when viewed from Lucien's side of things and yet he's framed as being perfectly reasonable.
Beyond that, I think not declawing the Tombtakers and allowing them to be considerably competent threats instead of half-starved, freezing idiots and focusing more on Lucien's Eldritch Madness, as opposed to just general madness would go a long way.
And there you have it! The most generous, kind script doctor for the book I can give. That is all it would have taken to make a book that was very different from what I expected, but wouldn't have utterly pissed me off and, in fact, would have been looked back on fondly as a flawed but otherwise fun story.

Ray Bradbury, an opinion by me.
There is little that I like about Ray Bradbury's work (I have only read two by the way, my opinion is based on those (All Summer In A Day and The Pedestrian)). I personally think that yes, his writing is well-constructed and a good example of how to use figurative language and metaphors, but beyond that the ideas he writes about feel too outlandish for me to really appreciate his work for what it is.
In no world are humans ever going to become as addicted to their televisions as he suggests in The Pedestrian. Humans always have and always will experience the urge to not only rebel against authority, but but also return to nature and creativity.
Perhaps Ray Bradbury intends to make his audience upset with these writings. Perhaps their purpose is to deter humans from letting this become our future. If that is what he intends, then I respect him for it.
However, from the two that I've read, it doesn't come across as that. Maybe this is because both stories were published in 1950, but regardless, if these are not satirical, it seems foolish to think that humans would really become that attached to being inside and listening to authority (as seen in The Pedestrian) or allow themselves to be in a place where they can only go outside for one hour every seven years (All Summer In A Day).
This has been shown very well in the past few years. Covid 19, with people being stuck in their houses - and not even permanently, allowed out for short periods of exercise on the daily for some parts of the lockdowns - caused so many mental health issues and suicides related to the pandemic.
Looking at how governments all over the world are reacting to what has been happening in Gaza, for example, or the USA's anti-abortion laws, and laws that are so harmful to the LGBTQ+ community (specifically transgender people), a lot less people are willing to trust the government than Ray Bradbury seems to have predicted in The Pedestrian.
Not only this, but governments all over the world are putting restrictions on the media that the people of their countries are allowed to engage with. The plot point of people being encouraged to watch their televisions so much is no longer realistic.
Ray Bradbury's work is impressive in that it uses good narrative techniques. Part of the horror in dystopian fiction comes from the chance that it could actually happen at some point in the future. The world has changed considerably in the past 70 years. Much of it is for the better, and a lot of it is for the worse. The changes we as a society have faced have made it incredibly unlikely for something similar to the two books, The Pedestrian and All Summer In A Day, to play out in real life. This removes much of the horror from those books, thus making them far less interesting to read now than they would have been even 40 years ago.
Oh my lord I am so sorry about this. I got really bored trying to answer questions about All Summer In A Day for English. Don't come at me, pretty please.

Igor
Tumblr media
“Riff Raff” © Mike Hazelwood, accessed at Comic Art Fans here
[It’s a Halloween collaboration! The concept and most of the flavor text are courtesy of @monstersdownthepath, and the mechanics are mine. The story by which the hunchbacked assistant became known as “Igor” is a long, strange one. In the Universal movies, Frankenstein’s original hunchbacked assistant is named Fritz, and Ygor has a broken neck, not a hunch. Neither of them are very good assistants, either, with Fritz being the reason the monster breaks free, and Ygor actively plotting against Wolf Frankenstein and using the monster as his personal assassin. Although Young Frankenstein did combine the Ygor and Fritz characters, and make the resulting combo funny and helpful, it’s not the first appearance of an “igor” named Igor. That’s in the Rankin Bass cartoon “Mad Mad Mad Monsters”. There’s a very good writeup of the history of the Igor archetype here
Of course, finding art for Igor was a bit of a challenge, because that’s a real name. And there’s a lot of Slavic artists on ArtStation who are actually named Igor. Eventually I settled on this pic of Riff Raff from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, who, like a fair number of hunchbacked assistants to mad scientists, turns on his master by the end of the movie.]
Igor CR 3 N Aberration This ugly little man appears to be human at first glance, but something is off. His movements are jerky in a way that suggests that his limbs aren’t put on quite right, and his facial features are exaggerated.
While there are a great many creatures that can be described as 'born from a madman's nightmares,' few can make this claim as literally as the igor, which spring fully formed from the madness of minds with psychic potential. Unlike most of those creatures, however, the igors aren't forces of mindless destruction and suffering. Quite the opposite, in fact. Mad scientists, unhinged artists, alchemists deep in their cups, and arcanists with screws loose all run the risk of falling too deeply into self-destructive habits if no one is around to pull them back from that edge, and on some level their minds realize this. The igor is something of a psychic self-defense, an emergency measure that springs into action to assure the mad creator always has someone nearby to catch them if they fall. Left to its own devices, an igor will clean its master's domicile, rid it of infestations, procure and prepare sustenance for their master to the best of their ability, and otherwise care for its master and their property.
Though all igors are devoted to preserving their master's life through whatever means they can, the methods they use to do so can be anything from simply providing meals to casual homicide to eliminate troublesome witnesses. In addition, the attitudes of igors towards their masters range from slavish adoration to casual indifference to snarky hostility, though even mistreated igors will not do or say anything that could actually cause harm to their master. Despite whatever caustic remark a more sardonic igor may have just spat, it will be said as they bandage their master's newest wound or prepare their favorite dish.
Igors are often overlooked by adventuring types, and they may find themselves without a master to take care of due to violence or old age. These “freelance” igors long to replace their fallen masters, and may be attracted to other minds of psychic potential and/or emotional instability. An igor may even prove to be a bad influence, as it were, steering a pliant mind towards grandiose plans by making seemingly innocent suggestions and telling their new master exactly what they want to hear.
An igor is typically the alignment of their original master; evil igors are more common than good ones, but all alignments are known. Igors vary wildly in both appearance and mannerisms. All of them are slightly off from human shape, typically being short and stooped or abnormally tall. Hunched backs, popped eyes, twisted arms, crooked necks and the like are common. An igor may be taken as a familiar with the Improved Familiar feat by a 7th level caster.

What are ur favorite mangas?? Love ur art btw🫶🏻
Sorry for the long reply, here it is. I'm pretty sure I have left out a lot of other manga, I can't remember the others I used to read… I'll update this list once I figure it out.. In the meantime, enjoy this collection:
Aku No Hana/Flower Of Evil/The Flowers Of Evil - Psychological/Drama, about a young man who constantly reads this foreign poetry book called, Les Fleurs du mal by Charle's Baudelaire. From the get go, you're introduced to him having an ego and looks down on others for not being in the same realm of intellect for not understanding the book he is into. The main character wants to stand out, but even he does not understand it himself.
He attaches himself to his classmate, Nanako, the top of her class. Because of her displayed intellect and proficiency in english, Takao assumes she is also different and would understand where he is coming from, placing her in a pedestal, the same way as she places him in the same light also. When his crush left her gym wear in the classroom, he decides to snoop in and wear it. Letting his perverted degeneracy take hold of his thoughts before getting found out by his classmate, Sawa, and all hell breaks lose. He is blackmailed and forced to do her bidding from here on out.
It may not seem like it as first glance but this is a love story that's not meant to be, two people who understand one another but they harm others around them in the process. The three characters that you'll be following are complex that it's hard to label them as this one thing, especially Sawa. You will have no clue what she's thinking, what she wants to do and what she's trying to say, and before you know it, you're just like the main character, wondering about her constantly.
It has an anime, but it's not well received due to it's unusual style which is rotoscoping rather than the usual anime style, but if you can't stomach the long pauses and the drag it brings I would suggest watching the live action instead.
Bradherley No Basha/Bradherley's Carriage/Bradherley's Coach - Historical/Tragedy, taking place around the 1800's, an aristocrat goes around in various orphanages to adopt young girls and train them to join his opera troupe. But upon coming with him, they make the discovery that the man's real intention is not to give them a good life..
It is a oneshot with a plot that must be pieced together to make a coherent storyline, each girl in question has their own story to tell and it is a depressing read, filled with mature subject matter so be warned if you're not good with such things. To me personally, this stuck with me and has taken my interest ever since.
Chi No Wadachi/Trail Of Blood - Or Blood on the tracks.. Psychological/Horror, it's about a mother and her son. One day, during a family gathering to the mountains, an incident happened in regards to the cousin and only Seichi and his mother, Seiko, knew of what actually happened. Throughout this entire manga, the young boy faces psychological torment through his mother and the certain day replays on his mind constantly..
What's great about this is that it let's you figure out what the characters are thinking, especially Seiko, who is the most mysterious character of this manga. There are also times where you're taken out of Seichi's perspective and left to observe his expressions and wonder what's going through his head. You're always left feeling dread because there's no way of knowing what's going to happen.
Collapse of the World as We Know It - Psychological/Horror, a collection of short stories. I'm not going to list it all here so if you wanna know what these stories are, go read it. It has marked it's place in my memory.
Daija Ni Totsudai Musume/The Great Daija's Bride/The Great Serpents Bride - Drama/Supernatural/Romance, written similarly to a folk story, this is about a human girl named Miyo who was given as a sacrifice to the lord of the mountain, Daija. And them learning to live together, they eventually fall in love and start a family. Yes, he is a large talking snake and no he will never become a humanoid. Yes, there are a lot of sex scenes between them lol but that's not the point.
This manga has a lot of plot twists and interesting characters, and deals with heavy subject matter like rape and abuse to gray morals in regards to Daija's relationship with the people who are worshipping him. It is befitting the atmosphere of that era and it feels like someone is writing their own folk story. This is a recent manga I am reading and it clearly stands out to other romance manga out there.
Inuyashiki - Science fiction/Thriller, an old man, down on his luck upon learning he has cancer and coming home to a cold family who could care less, decides to walk his dog to a park one night till he encounters a strange light in the sky and hits him. He was then transformed into this cyborg with powers capable of doing anything, while a young man who happens to be walking the same park was also hit and turned into one. The two of them will choose different paths and use their now owned powers for their own reasons.
Kimi Ni Aisarete Itakatta/I Want To Be Hurt By Love - Psychological/Drama, written by a disturbed loli doujin artist turned mangaka, good for her. It is about this girl named Kanae Kanai who is trying to be part of this group that's composed of the popular girls in the class just so she can say that she's needed and part of something. But she finds it hard to relate and go along with them, constantly needing to be reassured in her position within the group till she meets and catches the attention of the popular guy that they invited from another school named Hiroshi.
The story is dark as you would imagine, there is bullying, revenge, abuse of various degree, sexual content, etc. And I know, a lot of people who read this will say that it is over the top but I digress because the things happening and the actions she is doing is reasonable and will reach to that extent if you were ever in her shoes.. People complained that she's unlikeable and horrible when that's the point. You're not supposed to relate, you're suppose to try and understand why she is thinking in this manner.
When she told Hiroshi to quit his dreams to play, you'd say you're stupid and crazy for suggesting that when in her case, that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do because that's all she does in her life. Kanae runs from her problems and when something as a little inconvenience doesn't go her way, she instantly goes to find something to dissociate herself from that problem.
If you've seen the doujins this author makes… Man, she knows how to make a scary scene. She's really using her experiences that she went through. And when I saw those two familiar characters from her doujin make an appearance my heart sank so hard I thought I was gonna have an heart attack. Also, the english title should've been "I want you to love me like it hurts".
Koko wa Ima kara Rinri Desu/From Now On, we Begin Ethics - Drama, an episodic manga featuring a teacher teaching students about ethics. It tackles different subjects and finishes them around a chapter or two, the students are not the normal characters that you should invest for a very long time as he teaches new characters and the years pass by as well, you'd also see them having character development even after their sole chapter ends. But let it be known that it centers towards only the teacher and the mystery surrounding him and why he even wants to teach it in the first place.
The students may or may no change and do not suddenly have a change of heart nor change their opinions about their beliefs, even some of the students I hate are unlikeable and my stance on them will remain that way but the point of the manga is that these are people and people do not change willy nilly. If you like such a concept then experience it for yourself. The english title should've been "Here, we will study ethics."
Made in Abyss - Dark Fantasy/Adventure, takes place in a fantasy world called Orth, a mining town surrounding a large hole that's deep within the earth itself. No one knows how deep it is exactly besides the map that has last been documented is around the 7th layer. Depending on how deep you are, the larger the effect of the abyss' curse has on you.
The two main characters, Reg and Riko decide to embark to find Riko's mother, Lyza from a presumed letter from her, saying that she is will be waiting for her at the very depths of the abyss.
This has the best worldbuilding I have ever laid my eyes upon, there are no main villains except the abyss itself and that's rather rare. Characters using their intellect and knowledge to avoid the curse and the animals inhabiting it, from uncovering the secrets it has. It sends you alongside the main characters in learning what the abyss has in store. If you want good storytelling then look no further, because I can't get enough of it.
Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show/Shoujo Tsubaki - No surprise it's back again, check my previous post in regards to my favorite movies. I've said my case on why I am a fan of this movie and eroguro movement in general.
Nekojiru - Dark comedy, two anthropomorphic cats and their daily life. It's filled with casual child abuse, animal abuse, racism, vulgarity, and violence. All of this was inspired from the creators everyday life because she lives in a poor neighborhood and she wasalso abused so it's to no one's surprise her manga is also filled with it. Write what you know, as the saying goes.
I like collecting and reading these kind of things so this just fits in my forte, it also has a niche fandom. It has a psychological movie also, no dialogue, just straight up acid trip. Go check it out.
Oyasumi Punpun/Goodnight Punpun - Psychological/Drama, of a young boy named Punpun, drawn in this cartoonish anthropomorphic blob of a bird and his everyday life. He through the same as any boy would experience, school life and experiencing a crush for the first time. Till he comes home one day and finds the house a mess and his mother on the floor and his father stuttering to find an excuse.
The manga follows him till his adult life as his mental state deteriorates, trying to find reason to keep on living inspite of the harsh life he has experienced. He then eventually meets up once more with his childhood crush and together they embark to find even meaning in their relationship.
This holds a special place in my heart as this is the manga I've read that actually understands how I feel, watching his dreams shatter and coming home to a broken family, disassociating yourself to the world around you as this goal that you've always centered yourself around no longer bares meaning upon reaching adulthood. You won't find that feeling ever again..
Sentai Daishikkaku/Ranger Reject/Go Go Loser Ranger! - Action/Drama/Sci-Fi/Superhero, taking place 13 years after the defeat of executives, the boss monsters, the dragon keepers decided to leave the few remaining mob monsters called dusters alive and strike a deal with them to do a play every sunday where they are defeated by the keepers so that they can remain in power still and have their place in the world still relevant.
The world of keepers are filled with political and social power that makes them almost untouchable, and while they are seen as villains in the eyes of our MC, fighter D, the line between hero and villain is blurred completely. There are many plot twists and you will find it hard on who to root for.
Sundome - Psychological/Romance, about a young man who finds himself unfulfilled due to not finding someone who can fill his heart with what he actually needs till an exchange student comes around and changes his life. This is a love story between a masochist and a dominatrix, and them learning to trust one another on whether their feelings are genuine or not.
This is an ecchi manga so heads up, they deal with sexual situations that are downright degenerate but it's all in the manner of consent and trust between the two. The two are challenged constantly throughout the chapters, if this is just lust on his part of does he genuinely love her inspite of it.
This to me, I consider the best romance I've read so far but I did not like the ending, I have a lot to say about it too, but most of the time I pretend it didn't exist. But the rest of it is amazing and I don't think I will ever experience something like it again. I will thank the youtuber for introducing me to it but fuck him for mislabeling this manga as psychological horror.
Tonari no Seki no Hen na Senpai - Romance/Comedy, it is adult smut so if you're expecting a deep analysis of the story, I'm afraid this ain't it. This about two co-workers, mayumi knows what she wants, a handsome guy and she just so happens to be in the sales department filled with it, what luck! The guy in question is unfortunately a clingly stalker who's a pervert and he wants to get together with this woman who was nice to him.
Sexual hijinks ensues, and yes, there is dubcon. If you want something to have a laugh or shut your brain with then go read this lol
-- I'll type out my favorite mangaka's here instead as listing one by one their mangas is tiresome, besides, I like all of their work. Be warned, they are eroguro artists.
Suehiro Maru's Mangas - There's too many for me to list it all so just browse his name and you'll find all of his manga collection. He's very popular for his showa esque art style and the macabre surrealism of it all. Yes, he is the one responsible for making Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show.
Shintaro Kago's Mangas - Another surreal eroguro artist, known for his bizarre one shots and grotesque imagery. Unlike Suehiro Maru, Shintaro displays fecal matter just because no one else likes to draw about it and leans more into dark comedy.

Robaire!
☆ finds horror movies scary, but doesn’t really physically react! the most he’ll do is jump once or twice at jumpscares or squeeze whoever’s closest to him
☆ he’ll laugh off any of his reactions and honestly it always lessens the blow of whatever scared them
☆ big fan of psychological horror!! loves going to bed wide-eyed and pondering life
☆ might cover his face if he’s anticipating something happening, esp if it’s gore
☆ he can just barely handle gore! usually looks away for that and covers some element of his face
☆ loves to curl up with his friends or s/o with a blanket and some popcorn though, still a big sap even when you’re not watching romantic movies
Tumblr media
Jesse!
✦ LOVES scary movies even tho he’s kind of a bitch like he’ll be smiling in amusement; he thinks they’re a bit cheesy unless they’re based on a true story
✦ says he’s really not into it but is secretly a bit of a horror nerd, knows a lot more than he thinks
✦ will still jump and VERY VERY occasionally let out a little yelp or scream but he laughs it off
✦ honestly, falls asleep a lot during the movies. tae young doesn’t know how he does it.
✦ likes the ones that are based on a true story because he gets to research it and scare the younger more troublesome members with the stories
✦ he’s a bit of a menace when it comes to horror, likes to use it like i said before :3
Tumblr media
Aaron Z!
⍟ jumps at jumpscares and literally cannot get himself to stop no matter how bad he wants to look unaffected
⍟ grabs onto the person closest to him and quickly realizes and stops
⍟ screamed once and the band will NEVER let him live it down
⍟ sometimes shakes or tears up from how much he represses a reaction
⍟ when he doesn’t repress a reaction, he’s grabbing his shoulders, curling into  a ball, knees up to his chest, biting on the blanket; he’s kind of terrified and has trouble realizing it isn’t real and won’t happen in the night
⍟ CANNOT sleep for the life of him after these movies. someone else finds him awake and has to make him take melatonin or something and has to stay in the room until he falls asleep :(
Tumblr media
Aaron T!
✪ honestly thinks they’re silly, like he can’t stay still and he’s a bit fidgety but he can’t stop either internally or externally making jokes about the movie
✪ LOVES silly horror movies, he’s alright to sit through normal horror movies but safe to say it’s people like T that get Z through the scarier movies
✪ doesn’t like to think hard about the horror movies, it’s not like T is stupid, far from it! but movies and film knowledge or analysis isn’t his kind of activity
✪ if he’s actually scared, u can see his face drop and start fidgeting with his hands or sitting very, very still
✪ doesn’t jump at jumpscares, jokes about them and possibly laughs a little too loud
✪ tries to cheer up anyone that gets too scared at a movie! spends as much time with them as they need
Tumblr media
Tae Young!
⋆ stiff as a board, sitting even stiller than Z. he’s super focused on any movie, but he’s basically entranced by horror movies
⋆ barely jumps at jumpscares, usually it’s just in a little move backward and sometimes just a blink
⋆ really doesn’t talk! sits with his eyes glued to the screen and occasionally asks a question about the logic or how the plot will progress and is usually met with some shushes, not as much as T tho LOL
⋆ is usually constantly holding onto someone or something the whole time and doesn’t realize until the movie is over and his hands are a little sweaty
⋆ talks nonstop about any movie after they finish, even if it was terrifying, he just goes on and on about his own thoughts or theories on it! robaire is most pleased to talk about that stuff with tae
⋆ when he’s really scared, he might cry, not consciously but he’ll just tear up! kinda shakes like Z but most of the time is unphased

I really get overwhelmed by something that I saw on tl today...i guess an au writer, dont knw just saw the post..was asking suggestions for their fic about cheating...like is it okay to cheat someone for being with his true love or smthng..the matter is cheating here..
Does that mean whoever read that fic enjoyed the cheating? Nd if they enjoyed it who should we actually blame it on...the reader or the writer?
Just like what happens in ty's matter...I have seen lot au nd fanfics authors criticized him that if he read it that means he enjoyed evry word that written on it...they should sit nd think where do they stand when they write something like this..even if u think it's a minor sin, that doesnt matter...the point is when u write something gore, isnt that just to aware ppl there is lot of similar things happening in the world,nd u should knw these things through these stories...nd dont make prejudice that ppl actually enjoying it nd they r bad...when u persue literature in a good way u should feel nd think it in the same way too....
Tbh, I want to convey what's on my mind in a lot clearer way..but lang is a big wall to write...if u get the point that's it...I just want to share it with u...thanku
It depends. If a radio host spreads propaganda and urges to kill other people, he is up to a trial. He spreads dangerous ideas, brainwashes people with lies and installs hatred. If a reader of Crime and Punishment takes an axe and goes and kills a woman, the author is not to blame, he only explored human nature and contemplated about guilt.
If a story describes how justifiable cheating is, how wonderful is the experience, how it can be a test to the relationship and "true love" because "if he/she really loves you, you'll be forgiven", the author is partially to blame. Partially because in the end it was the reader who read the story till the end and made the decision to cheat, who acted in the real world. The author just played the devil and used the right for free speech.
As a rule, fanfiction is not a propaganda media, it is low class literature for fun to spend the time and get distracted from everyday life and chores. The author' only responsibility is to provide correct tags and warnigns, to make the reader aware of what is inside their story for an informed choice. Everything else is on the reader.
What people consume, what stories they read, what scenarios they fantasize about often have little ties to reality. You can't judge a person's real character on what he/she reads or what video games he/she plays. Like take the horror movie genre for example. People who watch it want a little bit of thrill, a scare to satisfy the primitive part of our brains that evolved to look out for predators and find joy in escaping danger (people feel more alive going through hardships or danger). Those people (most of them at least, can't vouch for sociopaths and mass murderers) don't watch the horror movies to enjoy teen girls being brutally killed or kids being devoured by aliens.
Stranger things is also a series about the charm of 80-s, friendship and family. Deaths, experiments on kids and maiming by creatures is in the plot as a story-telling tool designed to bring the best out of the protagonists, not to treat viewers with gore.
Back to cheating. Many people feel bored with their daily life, so they want some "spice". This makes them look for stories with "not vanilla"/"forbidden" themes. It's because they didn't experience the thing in real life which makes them be able to read about it. Even gang rape is a kink.
It is well known that once a couple gets together in a tv-series, it becomes dead. Writers know how to write romance, but not married couple interestingly. Same could be the case with "true love". So they live happily ever after, and what can one write about them? Kids and domestic fluff, or "trouble in paradise" - cheating and break up. If fanfic writers were as smart and creative as they like to think of themselves, they'd be earning acclaimed authors with prizes in literature.
There is a mangaka Hiroaki Samura. He likes gore. He incorporates it in his mainstream series, he also draws niche artbooks and short-stories with nude and very graphically tortured women. You can be narrow-minded and prejusticed and jump to a conclusion that he needs to be cancelled. In reality, he is one of the rare authors who writes women as real characters, who does the "strong woman" trope correctly. He also has great sense of humour, he brings all his characters to life. And I have a suspicion that his oneshot about orphaned women being gang raped was an attempt to digest the history of "war brides", something that Japanese try to pretend never happened. Hiroaki doesn't give interviews with deep self-exploration for me to know why he is into gore, but I can see whatever it is (dealing with trauma, artistic exploration of human sins, whatever) it doesn't make him a "bad human" with "bad influence". On the contrary, I'd like Japan to offer more authors like him.
Showing violence can be a way to teach about compassion or serve as a warning. Like the old fairytales were Cinderella sisters' toes were actually cut off or sibings burned a witch alive.
The art of drawing is especially detached from reality. Even though the brain matches the drawn objects to the real ones, without smell and sound, 3D-ness and other information signals of "the real world", the drawn things stay unreal. A drawing of a dead person can be considered beautiful art (Ophelia). It certainly wasn't meant to evoke those realistic feelings of disgust and fear that a real smelling, bloated and floating in water corpse will do. And the painters who decided to make their own version of the famous scene certainly weren't into dead women as sexual objects.
I think Tae being dragged into that manga controvesry in the end will bring him new fans, lol. He is too anime looking to not pick up anime folks' interest.

31 Days of Horror - Day 16 - The Secret of Marrowbone
16/10/23
I have a vivid memory from my childhood where my parents sat me down and we discussed where I would want to go if they died. Morbid, I know, but the idea always lingered with me after my discussion. In the end, we agreed my eldest sister, and my brother would look after me, and while none of this ever came into fruition, for a while I was plagued with dreams where this played out. In the end, death was an avenue for a new life I could visit in my dreams.
The Secret of Marrowbone, or simply Marrowbone, is a 2017 film directed by Sergio G. Sánchez. It follows a family as they flee from their father, only for their mother to pass away, and for the eldest sibling to have to hide this fact until he turns twenty-one, and can legally watch over them.
Before moving much further with this one, this film is built upon secrets, twists and turns that we watch unfold, and for this reason, I feel it necessary to warn anyone who may read that I will be spoiling this! I would very much recommend this film, and I’m unsure how the experience would be if the plot twists had been unearthed beforehand, so here is that warning!
To start, I want to discuss the reason I wanted to watch this film in the first place: the cast. George MacKay plays Jack Marrowbone, the eldest sibling of the family. I had seen him before in 1917 and Captain Fantastic, both of which I had watched for lessons in school and college, and while I thought both films were good but not captivating for me, he was definitely the stand out of them both for me! Anya Taylor-Joy plays Allie, a librarian who falls in love with Jack, and befriends the family. I love a heap of films she has been in, including The VVitch, The Menu, Emma and Last Night in Soho. Next is Charlie Heaton, who plays Billy Marrowbone, and although I have only seen him before in Stranger Things, I think the wildly different characters he plays between this and that are to the credit of his acting! Finally, Mia Goth plays Jane Marrowbone, and is in two of my favourite films, X and Pearl, as well as several others I love, such as Infinity Pool and The House. All of them, and everyone else in this film, puts in a great and believable performance as their characters, making them feel deeply real.
For a large majority of the film, we inhabit the Marrowbone house, which I think is an excellent setting. For one, the set design is great at making the house feel old and withered, yet having some excellent shading to characters interests and design tastes, where we can reasonably believe that they have been spending all their time there! The colours are dull and grey, which usually I would find boring, but they have a deeper purpose as they suggest the isolation and confined lives the younger siblings have been forced into. These greys and browns juxtapose the bright colours outside, and at the end of the film, as Jack finds himself free when he abandons the house, rushing through fields to visit Allie or wandering into the nearby village to sell cakes.
As far as the film's story itself, I enjoyed it! I think that the familial bond of the characters makes you care about it a whole lot more, and the mystery makes the whole ordeal captivating. Even as I sit writing this, I am putting together some of the imagery and plotlines purposes, such as Sam Marrowbone, not wanting to look into mirrors, believing ghosts are in them. Of course this makes sense when you find out about the ending.
I guess I should move onto what the plot twist was, because I believe it shaped a lot of the film! That being that the family we watch bond and grow across the course of the film, is mostly dead. After their serial killer father made his way into the house, he killed all three of Jack's siblings, leaving him alive as he locked his father in the walls. Everything we have seen play out has been a result of Jack taking on his siblings' personalities because he couldn’t cope with the fact he didn’t protect them.
The ending is harrowing, while I had a hunch that it was coming, it really hurts to watch - we see how much everyone in the family cared and loved for each other, only for the final realisation that none of this happened.
I will say, the trope usually results in some very awful depictions of real people with DID and often leads to a huge spread of misinformation. I always think of Split, which had a massive and awful effect, all because it portrays a character with this mental health condition as villains, rather than understanding that most people with this condition are victims. And so, while I felt this depiction may not be as harmful as many others as a result of the character not leaning into violence and harmful behaviour, it is something that I always think about when watching that kind of film.
By the end of this film, I found myself heavy with sadness. It is a story that relies on your connection to the sibling bond of the characters, and I very much loved it. Although sometimes the story felt a little like it was dragging on, or like a ball of yarn that was filled with knots and impossible to collect, it manages to stitch itself together by the end into a single coherent piece which is a delight to think about and watch.

Dead by Daylight
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background
Dead by Daylight is a notorious game known and loved by many around the gaming and horror communities. Many may know it due to the trends with Ghost Face and others may know it primarily from ads or recommendations. This game is overall phenomenal and if you're a fan of horror this might just be the game for you! The game consists of two sides, the killer and the survivors. There's one killer hunting up to four survivors who's jobs are to fix the generators all around the map to escape while also protecting and saving each other from the killers grasp. Currently there are 37 playable survivors including the well known Laurie Strode from the Halloween franchise, Cheryl Mason (Silent Hill), the beloved Leon Scott Kennedy (Resident Evil™) and lastly my personal favorite Dwight Fairfield (he's just there and he's great). As for killers there are 32 to choose from. Some of these killers are The Shape (Michael Myers), The Cannibal (Leatherface), The Nightmare (Freddy Krueger), The Pig (Amanda Young) and again my own favorite The Ghost Face. All characters have dynamic plots and different characteristics.
Throughout the matches players collect blood points that are spent on character upgrade/level ups. The further you get through the bloodweb (where your upgrades are) the stronger your character is capable of being and the more features you unlock. Throughout the bloodweb you also collect items which may help during matches, this includes med kits, offerings and much more. This game is very lore heavy if you're into a story line but you don't really have to follow it, there's information on each character and its all dynamically planned out through seasons of the game. It shows real storylines of the characters from already made movies, games, etc. and storylines of their own characters (Dwight). This game doesn't require you to know the lore but if you're someone into a good storyline definetely read into it!
Rating
Dead by Daylight is a fun game and I've had it for a few years. Unfortunately I can't play it consistently without getting bored of it for a while. It's good but repetitive in some aspects and the wait time for the lobbies is deadly. Literally. It takes really long to load into a game with others if you're in a solo queue so I suggest playing with at least a friend. Other than that if you're into horror and surviving games this will be right up your ally. ★★✰✰✰ Co-op Experience ★★★★✰ Scare (I get jump scared by the killers often) ★★★★✰ Lore/Content ★★★✰✰ Overall Gameplay
Pricing
Base Game: $21.99 CAD Ultimate Edition: $78.27 CAD Resident Evil - Collaboration Bundle: $44.57 Silent Hill Edition: $61.66 All DLC Combined: $240.00 (Including limited DLC)
Final Thoughts
Buy it, don't buy it. This game isn't life changing but its one of the better games out there and overall I'd rate it at least a 7/10. Its not exceptional and as said earlier it gets a tad boring at least for me. If you need something to play it's still definetely a recommendation.

The ‘monster’ in Dracula
Yeah I’m ready to totally throw myself into Whale Weekly, but that doesn’t mean that going to stop talking about Dracula
I’ve been reading so much literary analysis about the book and while there’s so many good ideas and insights being shared, I find that the ideas about the function of monsters in horror books fall a little short to me. Not untrue, but a bit simplistic, or one-sided, maybe. There’s this idea that is so often repeated: there’s a perceived threat, usually informed by the author’s fear, based in personal experience and cultural context, and that threat is projected onto the Other in the story - the monster. Who is thus made inhuman, strange, undesirable, dangerous, etc. Defeating the monster is the protaganist’s main arc, and by doing that they not only save themselves but also restore the status quo.
But Othering is such a general, broadly defined and applied term, does it still have meaning? It’s impossible to interact with people without Othering them in some way or another. A large part of conversation consists of pointing out differences and similarities between people: we always pull apart and come back together, that is the balance between being an individual and belonging to a group. Structual inequality and isolation and exclusion are where the real harm is done. Yet, does the monster represent these? In Dracula it’s nearly the other way around, a high class monster versus lower class orphan Jonathan. Is the monster still being othered if he symbolizes class and employer-employee oppression?  I also find that these theories seldom mention the very valid reasons protagonists have to be afraid of the monster. “The vampires are destroyed and british society can go on as normal”, ehm, did you forget that Dracula literally was attacking and traumatizing the protoganists, turning their lives miserable, killing children, killing Lucy, killing the whole crew of the Demeter? That the vampires themselves are portrayed as living a cursed and lonely half-life, fearing the sun, always consuming who they love? What is the alternative plot for the protoganists - to be turned unwillingly into the very being that hurt them so much, causing the same suffering to others? As a victimn of sexual abuse myself, I have some Major Problems with suggesting such a plot would be more progressive. Maybe sometimes monsters are not just about perceived social threats, but also about personal threats in the flesh. What I loved most about Dracula is how the protagonist learned how to communicate their hurts to each other, to recover from trauma, to overcome gender and class barriers to fight this monster together. Maybe nothing radical changed in british society at the end of Dracula - but this group of survivors was certainly never the same after.
Taking the threat of the monster away also doesn’t automatically solve things. For now it’s not a horror novel anymore. The harmless monsters of for example Beauty and the beast and Twilight turn it into a whole other genre. But these gentle monsters still don’t have a choice in what they are.
Which leaves us with the concept of monsters with autonomy. Imagine a character consensually turning into a monster, without it causing them suffering, changing things in society while not being inherently abusive to people - that’s a pretty rad concept. Which I’m sure is done before but I can’t name any examples. The superhero genre comes to mind, but the superhero is not a monster, it’s an idealized version of themselves. Venom or The shape of water come closer. I would love a story where a girl slowly turns into a dinosaur, is totally chill with that, she is Different but it’s Not a Problem, she continues to live in the village, and people give her animals to feed on and build her an enormous stall to sleep in. She fiercely defends each kid to become what they want to, whether that applies to gender or occupation of appearance or whatever. And then she saves the whole village from a pillaging army.
