Chapter 1-Wicked Witch of the West
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: You're practically family to the Winchesters and their surrogate father, Bobby Singer. So when Bobby lets it accidentally slip that you're a witch to Sam and Dean, a whole soap opera occurs.
Author Note: Character introduction, SupernaturalxFemale reader, Y/N, Alcohol consumption, Movie/TV show references, Witch, Witchcraft, Covens, Death of family members
Pre Castiel, Pre 6 Seals, Pre Crowly, Pre Lucifer
Story takes place during Seasons 1-2
~~~~~~~~
You’ve grown up with the Winchester family. John and Mary Winchester were always the parents you never knew. You’ve been raised most of your life by your grandmother after your parents died from a fatal car accident when you were only three in a half years old. Since then, you lived with your grandma. After she passed away and left you her cabin in one of the more rural areas of Wichita, you did ok making it through life alongside the Winchester brothers, Dean and Sam.
After the incident with the yellow eyed demon that claimed Mary’s life, spinning John into a dimension of vengeance and mania, he dragged Dean, Sam, and eventually you all around the United States hunting for the entity that murdered his wife. Sam having only been an infant when this happened didn’t know his mother as well as you and Dean did. You remember Mary fondly, and respected John without question.
You shared a special bond with Dean and Sam’s parents because they were fully aware that you came from a long blood line of witches. The Winchester boys, however, did not know. Due to Mary’s family being a family of ‘Hunters’ of the supernatural, she befriended your grandmother and several witch covens also building a rapport with the hunting community. Your grandma often counseled hunters and helped prevent many deaths amongst them while searching for paranormal threats.
Your grandmother having been a Priestess of an ancient coven since early adulthood, she educated you on the most sophisticated crafts while she was alive. After Mary was killed by the demon, John saw you to be a valuable resource, and brought you along for the hunt of the creature along with Sam and Dean as he desperately sought to avenge Mary.
As the years passed, the three of you growing into young adults, Sam went off to college not before getting into a heated argument with his father, John, about leaving the ‘family business.’ You and Dean, on the other hand, remained at John’s side until one day, John went on a hunt alone, and didn’t return. Against your better counsel, Dean traveled to Stanford University to rope Sam back into the hunting game to help find their dad. Sam refused to help at first, until his steady girlfriend, Jessica, met the same demise as his mother, Mary, filling Sam with that familiar rage as his father. Sam decided to leave school to search for his father with you and Dean, and from there, the rest is history.
The three of you having bested the Croatoan Virus, hellhounds, the super demon Lilith, The Apocalypse, The Four Horsemen, The Archangel revolt, vampires, wicked witches, Leviathans, zombies, demon possessions, hexes, curses, and evil spirits. Not to mention each of you dying and making deals with demons about a hundred times between the three of you.
After about a collective twenty-four years of hunting shenanigans with the Winchesters, their family friend and veteran hunter, Bobby Singer, let it slip you were a witch to Sam and Dean. Not too long after John Winchester’s untimely death in 2006.
“What did you just say?” Dean dared Bobby to repeat.
Bobby rolled his eyes at Dean. “Look, don’t get your panties all in a twist, Dean. Your father brought Y/N along on hunts because he knew she could help. He figured it would be best you two didn’t know because you were little tots together and didn’t want to spoil that bond.” Bobby explained.
“Yeah, well a lot of good that did.” Dean shot back.
“Dean,” Sam spoke up, “maybe dad had a good reason- “
“Oh, now you want to defend dad’s life choices? When all you ever did was question and resent the man?” Dean interrupted.
Sam continued, “All I’m saying, Dean, is that mom had her reasons keeping it a secret, so dad was just honoring her choice.”
Dean scoffed sarcastically.
You walked back into the room after unloading the Impala. They all turned to face you. You stopped in your tracks awkwardly.
“Um, everything ok, guys?” You asked.
“Yeah, everything except that you’re the ‘Wicked Witch of the West.’” Dean barked.
You hung your head with a sigh of defeat. Sam rolled his eyes and looked at Dean with his teeth clenched.
“Dean…” Bobby scolded harshly.
“What, Bobby? Am I just supposed to pretend like she didn’t lie to us this whole time? That she had every opportunity to tell us the truth and decided not to?” Dean went on not taking his resentful stare off you.
Dean never felt a deeper sense of betrayal. It was already difficult for him to trust anyone, let alone having trust someone who was a close and dear friend to the Winchester family.
Was he and Sam not approachable? Hell, even Bobby knew. Why wouldn’t dad tell them about what you really were?
Dean had so many questions swirling in his head.
“Dean?” Sam broke the silence in the room.
Dean shook his head and looked at his little brother.
“I need a drink. I need drinks.” Dean finally responded, stomping out the front door of Bobby’s house.
You finally look up at Sam. He met your gaze with an apologetic expression.
“Sam…I’m sorry.” You whispered.
Sam tilted his head at you compassionately, at a complete loss for words, then walked out of the room after his brother not before placing a comforting squeeze on your shoulder as he passed you.
You sighed loudly massaging your eyelids with your fingers attempting to tame the headache this soap opera just created.
Bobby walked over to you and pat you on the back.
“Don’t you worry about Dean, Y/N. He’s thrown his fits with Sam for lesser things. He’ll get over it.” He assured.
“I don’t know, Bobby. For Dean to find out he was deceived into working with someone who is the exact thing he hunts? He’s really big on trust and of course he’s going to forgive Sam. I’m not his brother, Bobby.” You argued.
Bobby shook his head smirking, “Trust me, he’ll get past this. You may not be his brother, but you sure as hell are an object of his affection.” He hinted.
You snapped a look of confusion at him. “Excuse me?” You managed to ask.
Bobby chuckled at you.
“Just give the man his time to process what he just found out. He’ll come around.” He reassured.
You raise an eyebrow at him, skeptical at his vagueness, but nodded anyway. Bobby never steered you wrong, so you trust his sentiments on the Winchester brothers.
OC Character's Instagram edit | Deputy Calahan Hartley | Template by @dayslily | Sabrina's
Tagging some people that said they adore Cal, just to feed their crushes a bit esp with the story video <3 (hope you all don't mind) @josephslittledeputy @trench-rot @poisonedtruth
I'm low-key laughing at the username I came up with for Hurk. I'm so happy I managed to complete Cal's edits today too and finally putting my ideas for his IG together.
Feed
Closer look at posts:
fishing trip with Sabrina, a picture from Sabrina's Birthday party Joey threw for her, Calahan just raging at John's sign (totally no foreshadowing here), Zorro's first "drive" (*hilarious lore on that little dude below the cut)
Story: Making breakfast <3
*(pre Reaping) Zorro is a pesky racoon that kept sneaking into Calahan's cabin no matter how many times he threw Tiny out. At one point he even put him in his car and drove him miles away in attempt to get rid of him, then days later, he comes home from work and finds Zorro scratching at his front door. Since then he basically adopted Zorro, including getting him a collar so he'd tell him apart. Tiny has gotten so good at following instructions too.
(during the Reaping) More to be revealed in upcoming chapters, but I find it hilarious to picture Calahan sitting at a campfire, Zorro by his side, his only option for making "conversation", when a bunch of Peggies show up and chaos ensues...
And John... he'd be like:
"YOU HAVE A PET RACOON, DEPUTY?" Calahan: "Don't you touch him, sinnerman. One, I'm gonna go John Wick on your ass. Two, he'd probably eat your face. Actually, change of plans, try to touch Zorro."
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4
In the lead up to its release, I’d heard no small amount of seemingly-hyperbolic praise heaped up on John Wick: Chapter 4 by friends lucky enough to see advanced screenings. Surely, I reasoned, this is merely pre-release hype fed by the thrill that comes with seeing something highly anticipated before everyone else.
I was wrong.
Believe the hype. This really is an incredible feat of moviemaking. John Wick: Chapter 4 is the rarest of sequels. Most film franchises are barely running on fumes by their third film, much less a fourth. Director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves, however, have delivered a movie with such ferocious style and breathtaking intensity that I walked away wondering if I’d hallucinated half of it.
The John Wick series has been one of consistent escalation. The first film feels almost quaint now with its eponymous protagonist leaving a miles-long trail of bodies through New York City on his sympathetic quest for vengeance. Now fully drawn back into the neon-drenched underworld he so desperately fought to leave, Mr. Wick brings his unparalleled expertise across multiple continents as we are immersed even further into this alternate reality of assassins and shadowy rulers. Chapter 3 never found the right balance of world building and characters, resulting in more than a bit of cinematic wheel-spinning, a problem Chapter 4 solves by shifting the focus from John as a loner against all odds to him navigating a web of relationships old and new in an all-out battle royale for his ultimate emancipation
He’ll just have to go through the toughest, most ruthless opponents he’s ever faced, including a former best friend, to get there. What unfolds is something exhilarating.
Chapter 4 is as much a love letter to every twin-fisted action flick Chad Stahelski has ever loved as it is a modern classic of the form. This may be the fourth time in a row that Keanu Reeves has pumped boxes of bullets into endless waves of underworld goons and assassins, but it’s an experience that he and Stahelski have honed to a mirror sheen. Throw in the likes of Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Rina Samayawa, Shamier Anderson and the godlike Donnie Yen and the result is the most relentless action movie since Mad Max: Fury Road. Every time you think the movie has topped itself with inventive ways to beat, slice, stab, bludgeon, whip and otherwise maim both heroes and villains, Stahelski says, “Nah, hang on.” Save for the aforementioned Fury Road, this may well be the ultimate form of an action movie, delivering a perfect blend of Asian-influenced mayhem and Stahelski’s own decades of experience as a Hollywood stuntman.
It’s a visual knock-out, too. The complexity of Wick’s action successfully escalates with each film and Chapter 4 delivers a symphony of destruction to the point where it’s nigh impossible to pick a favorite. The siege of the Osaka Continental featuring what may be the single best use of nunchucks ever in a movie? John’s rampage through a dilapidated apartment building viewed largely from a top-down perspective? A fight in and around traffic at Paris’ Arc de Triomphe that has to be seen to be believed? Any one of these would be considered the high watermark of any action director’s career.
These scenes are electric thanks to the outstanding choreography and a level of visual panache that puts every other recent film of this kind to shame. Any given environment is stunning to look at thanks to phenomenal production design and art direction (as well as Dan Laustsen’s gorgeous cinematography). But what makes these scenes as impactful as they are is something far more fundamental than fancy moves and good photography: Stahelski lets you see what’s going on. You’d think something this basic would be a principle more widely embraced, but getting a Hollywood action movie where the lighting is intentional, the edits are minimal and the camera movement precise and steady is maddeningly rare. The John Wick films at large have embraced this fundamental approach, but Chapter 4 takes it to an echelon above where even its predecessors unquestionably succeeded.
What really makes this one sing is the cast, though. Stahelski has made a habit of putting fantastic character actors throughout this series, but the additions in Chapter 4 are, as with most everything else, a cut above. Even ignoring the fact that I could listen to Clancy Brown read the phone book, the gravitas he brings to a role like The Harbinger cannot be understated. It’s abundantly clear that Bill Skarsgaard was put on this Earth exclusively to play movie villains. And Hiroyuki Sanada reminds us why he’s been a mainstay of Asian cinema since the 1960s. But it’s Donnie Yen who completely steals the show as John Wick’s friend-turned-nemesis Caine. Yen has been a mega-star of Hong Kong cinema for years, but he’s either been woefully underutilized (a la Blade II) or been cast to play second-fiddle (XXX: The Return of Xander Cage) and never given a true chance to fully shine for audiences in the West. Stahelski lets Yen cut loose in a way that is sure to blow the minds of at least a few moviegoers, and that’s on top of him playing a character that feels every bit as sympathetic as Keanu’s.
And speaking of Keanu, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about his work in these films. Say what you will about the quality of his acting, I dare say no award-winning actor could bring the level of commitment to authenticity and the bottled fury Reeves lets loose across these four films. Keanu Reeves could play Forrest Gump, but Tom Hanks probably couldn’t go toe-to-toe with some of cinema’s greatest martial artists. The amount of pain and abuse John Wick endures is basically superhuman at this point, but Reeves manages to make the impact land and be felt because he believes in this character and the exaggerated world he inhabits.
It feels almost miraculous that this series exists, much less that it has flourished in such a way. In a landscape filled with movies based on pre-existing intellectual property and remakes, we now have four movies bursting with creativity and originality that also serve as love letters to the inspiring source material. If this is the last we see of John Wick, there’s no better way to send him off.
I have absolutely nothing written for it yet.
Student Handbook: 😳😳😳 yeah, this is one of those 'should not see the light of day' fics. It is a smutty john wick x reader that takes place in a private school AU. It's some of the only smut I've ever written. Chapter titles are 1. Dress Code Violation, 2. Playing Hookey, 3. Teachers Pet, 4. Graduation.
I still have not finished chapter 1.
I’m not sure if Nobody was meant to be an absurdist movie, but I couldn’t take it seriously at all. There’s a shot which I can’t get out of my head, where RZA is surprised by a guy with a pipe after smiling to the camera, so Saul† throws him one of his dual pistols in slow motion, which is used to shoot a different guy (with a wrench this time — notably, at this point it’s escalated to everyone else having automatic rifles).
I also half-watched The Equalizer films recently, and can’t help but see the similarities. In both, the ‘civilian’ lives seem so far removed from their vigilante personas that they detract from the believability of the action (which also lack stakes and almost have me rooting for the bad guys). While Denzel’s use of pointless booby traps isn’t as egregious as Nobody’s, it also suffers from a similar thing of poor action blocking and seriously incompetent bad guys.
Watching John Wick’s imitators puts in perspective just how definitive it was. Maybe I should watch some pre-Matrix action to remind myself just how sophisticated our standards for action have become.
†: This ‘joke’ is a bit cheap, but I really did find it difficult not to see/hear Saul Goodman. I genuinely wasn’t sure if the main character would ‘wake up’ from his power fantasy with a hard cut at times.
(I quite liked John Wick: Chapter 4 – probably a bit too long, but more memorable than 2 and 3; none of them as well-rounded as the first.)
Naishuller says that the hardest thing for Odenkirk wasn’t the training, but the humiliation.
While Nobody was in pre-production, so too were films like John Wick: Chapter 3 and Hobbs & Shaw. For months, the facilities at 87Eleven were crowded with bonafide action stars taking on twelve (or more) stunt guys at the same time.
On the other side of the gym was Odenkirk, struggling to figure out a fight scene with just one.
“It was a little humiliating when you had Jason Statham and Keanu Reeves in this little boxed-off space in this huge hangar, doing one versus 12 [men]. I went to Bob, who was practicing against one, and he was sweating,” says Naishuller. “It was not easy for him in the slightest.”
screaming and crying at this but also laughing at how silly the notion of hollywood is. buncha guys all right next to each other training very hard for their little pretend fights
Over the last couple months I finally upgraded to somewhat modern TV and gaming rigs in the form of a 55” Samsung 4KTV and Xbox Series X. I own three 4K UHD discs, but one I already covered a couple years back with my entry of the BluRay version that came bundled with the 4K disc of Die Hard. The other is a two pack of the first two John Wick films, and rest assured those will get their day in the sun here eventually. From my research, the Xbox Series X is not a top shelf 4K BluRay player, at least not at the system’s launch before presumable system software updates, but also sounds like a fairly better quality version of the drive that came in the Xbox One X|S, and also supports upscaling of regular BluRays to 4K. Coincidentally, on top of my movie backlog pile was a movie I absolutely wanted to take advantage of that 4K upscaling and thus here we are with today’s write-up for 2019’s The Avengers: Endgame (trailer). WARNING: Unlike nearly most of my other movie recaps I will be diving into serious spoiler territory ahead. The amount of hype leading up to Endgame was insurmountable. Anthony and Joseph Russo did an astounding job directing the first part in 2018’s Infinity War (read my entry for it here). Both that and Endgame top the three hour mark to squeeze in as many characters, references, periphery side plots and so much more from the previous 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe films that lead up to this finale. By accomplishing just that, both movies are the breeziest three hour viewings I have experienced because the Russo brothers do a commendable job at keeping the scenes flowing and doing their best to give everyone their proper time to shine. The ending of Infinity War saw Thanos (Josh Brolin) deliver the snap heard around the world that vanished half of all life in the entire universe. It was a soul-crushing downer of a cliffhanger to end on, but the post-credits tag hinting at the cry of help for Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) left crowds with a glimmer of hope. This being based around comic books there is the unwritten rule where no one truly stays dead either, so part of the experience going into Endgame was to see how the remaining Avengers plan to bring everybody back. Endgame kicks off with the fresh effects of ‘the snap’ when it starts with Hawkeye’s family all getting dusted from him in the middle of a picnic.
Tumblr media
The film transitions to the remaining un-dusted Avengers squad of Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Iron Man (Robert Downer Jr.) floating aimlessly in space until the convenient deus ex machina that is Captain Marvel miraculously tracks them down and hauls them back to Earth. A few weeks Avengers HQ tracks down Thanos on an isolated planet and with Captain Marvel’s power, they anticlimactically kill him off in a brief scene. This was one of the parts of the film that did not sit well with me after building up Thanos as this unrivaled threat in all the previous films, and to have the Avengers cold-bloodedly put him down in quick order seems so……unlike them, but he did off half the universe so I understand how the Russo’s felt justified for filming it that way, but I cannot help that it did not come across right, and could have been handled better. Of course, a more proper Thanos battle would be coming later in the final act thanks to my pet peeve plot device that is…. …TIME TRAVEL!!!! This and alternate dimension traveling I despise and have turned me off to many shows over the years like Lost and CW’s DC shows. The worst of it is indeed present here because meaningful character deaths that happened in Infinity War to Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Gamura (Karen Gillan) become undone and their sacrifices proved for naught. All that griping aside however, I will give the Russo brothers credit because even with those qualms I feel they pull off time travel and have it appear as more than a convenient storytelling method. Again, major props because that is a hell of a hurdle to overcome. The filmmakers go out of their way in a couple scenes to directly call out Back to the Future’s style of time travel bullshit, and have a couple characters ever-so-carefully explain in detail and for the laymen how “real” time travel works.
Tumblr media
This is all thanks to a rambunctious rat who inadvertently zaps Ant Man (Paul Rudd) out of the Quantum Realm…after being trapped there five years due to his team being on the end of a dusting before bringing him back. Ant Man deduces upon his return that he is able to undo the dusting through his van-quantum-realm-contraption, and convinces the Avengers to conjure up a plan they cleverly dub the “Time Heist” to travel back to capture all the Infinity Gems Stones before Thanos does. I loved how these scenes played out, and there is a plethora of fan service throughout it as the three squads of Avengers jump to different periods like the final battle of the original Avengers film, and a 1970 military base where Howard Stark (John Slattery) unknowingly meets his son. Plans do not proceed swimmingly to say the least, and past timeline Thanos becomes clued in to their plan and thwarts the Avengers attempt at trying to undo the past in a CG showpiece for the ages with his assault on Avengers HQ. The CG fireworks continue to dazzle for the bulk of the final hour of the film with a climatic showdown between Thanos and his forces against The Avengers and the returning of the dusted Marvel characters. I have seen too many comic book films fail at translating over-the-top comic book action on the silver screen, but the Russo brothers always manage to pull it off. I fondly remember the theater crowd going gaga when Captain America (Chris Evans) summons Mjolnir and wallops Thanos with it. The women of Marvel have another moment to shine together where they collectively team up to kick ass. Moments of levity are brilliantly peppered in throughout the chaos for a much-needed chuckle from the nonstop adrenaline-boosting action. That final battle masterfully builds up to the dramatic sacrifice of Iron Man in the standout emotional scene of the film.
Tumblr media
The resulting aftermath was heartwarmingly done here with a pre-recorded farewell from Iron Man, and a collage of nearly all the major and minor MCU characters at Iron Man’s funeral. I believe this is the first MCU film without a post-credits tag, and that is 100% fine by me, because the beginning of the credits is a lovingly crafted tribute to the original Avengers cast done in the fashion of the Original Series cast of Star Trek VI that resonated with me feeling the end of a pivotal era of the MCU that I have been largely enjoying since the original 2008 Iron Man. I usually do not dive into this much detail and spoilers when recapping the movies here, but due to this being the final chapter of this era of the MCU films I could not help myself, and believe me there is so much more I wanted to dive in here on because like I said, the Russo brothers crammed in an incredible amount of narrative into three hours. There is so much ground in here it is impossible for me to recap it all, and that it will in all likelihood be the fastest three hour movie you will ever endure. I did not get a chance to even touch on over-the-hill Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the hybrid Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo (spoiler: they both killed it!)). Endgame unsurprisingly did major bank at the box office, so I feel safe knowing most of you reading this already watched it by now which is another reason I went all out on the spoilers.
Tumblr media
I re-watched the film for this entry a second time with commentary from the Russo brothers, and writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and that greatly helped explain some little tidbits that were easy to miss and/or not fully comprehend in the midst of the three hours. I know this is a little detail, but I want to give props to Marvel for being one of the few companies out there for shelling out resources to caption the commentary track! I exponentially appreciate it more than you know! The commentary helped with understanding why they did not do a lot for Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) aftermath of her death because she has her prequel film set to release. Other notable takeaways from the commentary was how Stark’s “I am Iron Man” line was a last minute addition to the film, giving credit to Star Trek VI as inspiration for their credits sequence, being hopeful for Marvel capitalizing on Falcon donning Cap’s shield and lots of understandable love for the visual effects team for their hard work. Aside from the commentary track, the BluRay has a second disc with just under an hour of bonus material. There is the requisite short, but top-of-the-line gag reel that is standard in most Marvel Studios home videos. There are five minutes of deleted scenes worth a look, with some of them lightheartedly covering up plot holes. Remembering Stan Lee is a touching tribute to Stan, filled with archived interviews from him on his experiences in the cameos, and showing plenty of delightful off-camera interactions with the cast and crew. There are well done character profile pieces for Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Iron Man, with each one having countless cast and crew state proper kudos to what the actors have done for those characters over the years. If you only have time for one then I recommend Man Out of Time: Creating Captain America, because it goes into a little more detail than the others and Chris Evans has some intriguing introspection from his years with the character. Finally, there are short, but worthwhile pieces on the Russo brothers and the women of the MCU that should not be skipped out on either.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned above, the hype building up to Endgame was insurmountable, but Joseph and Anthony Russo overcame the odds and delivered a gratifying conclusion to this era of the MCU. Watching the BluRay upscaled in 4K on a TV about a third bigger than my previous set made it a grander experience too for those showpiece moments. Sure I had quibbles and nitpicks I mentioned above, but by and large those are easily overcome by how much the Russo brothers got it right with this film. I am kicking myself for waiting a year and a half to re-watch it, but picked up on a lot of little things that went right over mine and Drax’s heads the first time out. If you have yet to give The Avengers: Endgame another viewing, then do not hesitate because you will not regret once again taking in this landmark epic that delivered against all odds! “little t&a” playlist
what i like to do, as much as possible, when i’m able, is to try to suffuse a story in its particular era. the further out from any decade, the more easy it is to lose the nuances of the time period and start being incredibly reductive. i don’t really like that-- plus, it’s fun to try to get as much of the “vibe” right as possible. i like trying to do that through songs. the late seventies were a lot more than punk rock and disco, i promise.
when i wrote “little t&a,” i had a pretty lengthy list of songs i’d listen to over and over in an effort to inspire myself. some of them ended up played in the story itself; others, not so much.
songs played in the story: “blinded by the light,” manfred mann --i picked this one because i thought it was a little amusing that manfred mann, much like KISS, had about a decade between his stints in the u.s. billboard top ten (though manfred mann had two #1s, while KISS... didn’t). it’s also an easy one to mess up the lyrics to.
”i honestly love you,” olivia newton-john --paul sings one line of this in the car with gene. he’s singing it as a joke, but olivia was seen as a very angelic/pure/overly good girl singer at this point in time (pre-grease and obviously very pre-”physical”), and it’s a little foreshadowing for later when carol mentions being at the record store to buy one of her albums.
a ramones setlist --i did a fair amount of research for the cbgb and studio 54 portions of the story, and the ramones’ borderline residency at cbgb was really cool to me. “tonight’s the night,” rod stewart --this one is obvious. the song’s about a girl giving up her virginity to rod. it’s just paul trying to make those overtures to gene, though he gets embarrassed about it and tries to deny it. “country girl,” crosby, stills, nash, and young --“country girl, i think you’re pretty/got to make you understand/have no lovers in the city/let me be your country man” is pretty obvious (gene’s growing feelings for paul), but the song itself is very wistful and maudlin. the “too late to keep the change/too late to pay/no time to stay the same” part is a reference to both of their uncertainties at this point about the curse. “got to give it up,” marvin gaye (not mentioned by title, but this is the song playing in studio 54 during the dance scene) --again, this is mostly just a sex reference
songs and albums mentioned in the story: *“witch doctor,” alvin and the chipmunks
*“the purple people eater,” sheb wooley
*a night on the town, rod stewart *deja vu, crosby, stills, nash, and young --this is not a good album to dance to at all. why paul tries to anyway is mainly because the album is pretty indicative of the music he was listening to when he and gene first became friends (yes, yes, beatles superiority in both their opinions, yes, but have you heard any of wicked lester’s stuff? they were just as influenced by folk rock). it’s nostalgic for both of them.
*flowing rivers, andy gibb --not mentioned by name, but barry gibb mentions his little brother andy’s solo album in his conversation with gene and paul, saying it’s a guaranteed hit-- the lead single off this album, “i just wanna be your everything,” hit #1 on the u.s. billboard charts later that year, 1977. this is several months prior to saturday night fever soundtrack’s release, which absolutely sent the bee gees’ popularity into the stratosphere and, rather unfairly, linked them inextricably to disco.
*dressed to kill, KISS *alive, KISS *have you never been mellow, olivia newton-john --the album carol intended to buy at the record store. more indicative of the kind of girl carol was, or at least, the music she was into prior to meeting paul.
*“when you wish upon a star,” pinocchio --gene’s love for this song (he put it on his solo album) and this movie has been stated repeatedly and i think it’s so sweet. paul takes the whole pinocchio thing in a way i don’t think gene intended (”work hard, get your wish” and assuming gene’s wish is that he’d stay a girl); it’s kind of sad how he initially envisions that as the ideal.
*more of the monkees, the monkees --paul plays this alone in the basement. it’s mostly meant as a contrast to gene’s being upfront and honest about the things he enjoys, whereas paul feels like he has to put on constantly.
songs i listened to: “little t&a,” the rolling stones (the title of the story) “the spider and the fly,” the rolling stones (most of the chapter titles) “let me!” paul revere and the raiders “give in,” leif garrett “twelve-thirty,” the mamas and the papas (later chapters, but mainly chapter 25 as paul waits on gene’s return) “dark star,” crosby, stills, and nash (smut scenes, primarily) “i’ll wait,” van halen “back into my arms again,” ace frehley (last chapter title)
Peering into Prophetic Progression
: By Terry James      Published on: October 15, 2021
For those who observe the signs of the times—the end-times weather report—indicators continue to mount that Christ’s Second Coming must be near. For pre-Tribbers, this accumulation of signals means the Rapture of the Church could be near indeed.
We’ll take a brief look at two signs that point to the approaching seven years of Daniel’s seventieth week, also called the Tribulation. Like so many other developments, these seem to speak specifically of major prophetic fulfillment following the Rapture (see 1 Corinthians 15: 51–55; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; John 14:1–3; and Revelation 4:1).
First, we have the two beasts of Revelation chapter 13, the Antichrist and the False Prophet. The first beast, Antichrist, will be the world political dictator who ultimately will be indwelt by Satan. The second beast, the False Prophet, will head the global religion that is against the God of Heaven and Jesus Christ with all demonic power that the “woman that rides the beast” can muster.
Like so many other signs we analyze in these increasingly wicked times, the second beast’s system of false religion is coming into focus. The current Catholic pope, as many Bible prophecy students have suggested, seems to be at the forefront of prophetic progression. The foretelling of this demonic, religious system is described in the prophetic passage below. The strange “beast” described here is comprised of the future ten worldwide spheres of control, Antichrist’s government. The “great whore” who rides this beast is the False Prophet’s evil, religious organization.
“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration” (Revelation 17:1–6).
So it shouldn’t surprise us that if this generation is near the end of this Church Age (Age of Grace), there should be signs of this evil system at least in some stage of development.
The following excerpt, I believe, provides such a signal:
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, held a special Chrislam summit in the Vatican, following their participation in the Summit of Religious Leaders on Climate Change, entitled “Faith and Science.” Welcome to the One-World Religion!
Pope Francis flew to Abu Dhabi to present the end-times covenant of Chrislam to Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb, how both men signed this document and then sealed their pact by a kiss on the mouth. Today, Ahmed al-Tayeb was present and accounted for at the Vatican as part of Rome’s preparation for their upcoming participation in the COP26 UN Climate Conference in Glasgow in November. (“Pope Francis Holds Special Gaia One-World Religion Meeting With Chrislam Co-Founder Grand Muslim Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb at Vatican Today,” Geoffrey Grider, NTEB, Rapture Ready post, October 6, 2021)
The other item that lets us peer a bit into prophetic progression toward Tribulation-era fulfillment involves Revelation 13:16–18).
This, of course, is an area of prophecy we’ve looked at many times. It’s almost uncanny, the clarity with which we can detect the rapid coming-together of satanic control that will mark the Tribulation era. We are, for example, seeing now advanced stages of manipulative, governmental machinations through growing mandates demanding that people around the world obey COVID compliance. Already their dictatorial tyranny is declaring that people can’t buy or sell without proof of vaccine compliance.
A report several days ago stated that one man was so eager to display his vaccine “passport” that he had it tattooed, in detail, on top of his hand. He was about to take a booster shot, so was going to get that additional detail included to bring his compliance up to date.
It also shouldn’t be surprising that the nation and people most mentioned in Bible prophecy yet future are at the very center of the developing Orwellian demand with regard to governmental compliance.
After earlier claiming that only two injections would be necessary in order to obtain a “green pass,” the government of Israel is now forcefully demanding that all Israelis received a third jab of the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) in order to maintain the “privilege” of buying and selling.
As many as two million Israelis who took the first two “vaccines” from “Operation Warp Speed” but not the third recently lost their green passes, according to reports. Until they comply, these double-jabbed people will now be considered “unvaccinated” in the eye of the government. (“Israel just nullified vaccine passports for all double-jabbed people…now only the triple-jabbed get ‘freedom,’” Ethan Huff, Naturalness, Rapture Ready post, October 05, 2021)
The entirety of the prophetic horizon seems filled with such developing Tribulation storm clouds.
Stage-setting for what might be soon fulfillment inundates our daily lives. The Rapture will suddenly bring judgment and wrath upon an unsuspecting world of anti-God rebellion and wickedness. That should cause all of us who are looking for our blessed hope to witness of Christ’s soul-saving power and of His offering supernatural safety from the coming Tribulation storm.
“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Luke 21: 28).
