in a universe where house dies with wilson, thirteen chase and foreman become a unit (probably with choreman lets be real), maybe thirteen comes back to ppth or just comes and goes, chase and thirteen sibling bonding, thirteen and foreman figuring out that actually, this is much better than trying to date, the boys taking care of thirteen as her huntingtons progresses

An innocent enough tweet on the surface, tagging Andrew and adding the caption “us”. To Neil, Andrew and their family, an obvious and even uncharacteristically sappy statement of long-held affection. i do like homestuck^2!

it has some issues with pacing (really wish they'd invested in a timeskip or two), and some of the latter updates aren't quite up to snuff, but it absolutely does not get the credit it deserves. yiffy is a fucking icon. all the character designs in the candy timeline especially are spectacular. dirk, terezi, and rosebot on deltritus were a DELIGHT and i'm so damn mad we didn't get to see more of what they were building up to there. all the bonus stories are great. the dynamic between jade and alt!callie in the meat timeline was fantastic (the chocolate!!!). BIG BOSS KARKAT

i love john putting on his old godtier outfit and finding that it no longer fits. absolutely underrated setup for the june arc. godtier clothes are supposed to be magically perfect for you no matter what! what could this possibly mean?!?!

hs^2 was a beautiful and flawed project that, in retrospect, was almost certainly doomed to fail both from the fandom side and from the company side. but its format and setups were a big inspiration for me in continuing godfeels beyond the end of 2.3, and remain the blueprint for much of 3.2's structure to this day. the scene where vriska gets shot and kills a bunch of cops and journalists in the form of non-visual chapter of exclusively prose was stupidly controversial at the time ("THIS SHOULD BE A [S] PAGE" cried the very haters who pilloried andrew hussie for exploiting unpaid/underpaid fan labor in producing homestuck's many [S] pages), but it's the only reason at all i had the guts to make [S] saturday the centerpiece of chapter 8. if i hadn't been digesting that scene for nearly two years, probably the whole ending of 3.1 would have been completely different and likely much worse.

it's hard to recommend hs2 because it is, of course, on perpetual hiatus and very unlikely to see itself concluded. what's there is good but it's undeniably mostly setup for a story that isn't on the page yet, which is such a shame. nevertheless, it and the epilogues are essential reading if you wish to understand the postcanon era in any meaningful sense, and if absolutely nothing else they're a fantastic springboard for developing entirely different postcanon fanworks of your very own

the thing abt candy jade is i actually can very easily buy her being so desperate for human connection that she grabs onto anything and everything tightly and maybe makes people uncomfortable with a lack of boundaries. the things i dont really buy though is that she would do that to dave specifically, and that she would lack the ability to see when he was uncomfortable. mainly because she and davesprite broke things off when they weren’t working out originally and she actually seemed to handle that reasonably (as far as the audience was aware ig)

i do think it’s actually a realistic tragic route for her character to go otherwise though

if madi died after silver found out she was still alive he would end the war but i also just cannot fathom a postcanon silver after that. part of me thinks he would just kill flint in the forest and then himself. i just don't know. because to me postcanon silver is literally just Waiting. he is nothing else he is so hollow. anyone else in his position i would be like well he would kill flint in the forest and then himself! but this is silver he's not allowed to die. maybe he shoots flint and then he goes to shoot himself and the musket misfires. maybe after that he can't find it in himself to shoot himself again. maybe he goes back to the maroon camp to settle the treaty terms and no one pays any mind to him. people seem barely able to notice he's there. maybe he becomes convinced he's actually dead already he thinks he's a walking ghost. he thinks he's already dead and this is the afterlife. and madi and flint aren't there so he's like oh okay this is hell. i've gone to hell and my punishment is to live with what i've done and to never see madi again. but he also can't stand the thought of never seeing her again so he just wanders around what he thinks is the afterlife trying to find her. and he never succeeds of course. then treasure island happens and maybe he thinks it's a chance to make things right. maybe he thinks if he goes to skeleton island he'll find flint. because surely flint would also go to hell, with everything he's done, and maybe flint's punishment is to be stuck on treasure island. so he goes there but he's still alone. treasure island horror movie when btw,

Some notes before I go to bed, some Homestuck stuff.

Man I wish Homestuck^2 was good. If it was and the fan backlash didn’t happen it would have been the greatest comeback in fandom history.

Off the heels of debt from trying to make physical Homestuck copies to a contentious epilogue (with some fans nonetheless) a profitable sequel made by fans with a new story to fix the plot discontinuities made by the epilogues (and generally strange characterizations) would have been the hugest underdog story in comics since Superman popularized the caped vigilante genre.

It wasn’t impossible to make Homestuck^2 good or profitable, it had a whole team of writers, famed artists on board, it reaches the 2000 patron goal in like, 1 and a half months! (Then crashed from I dunno the upd8?) and then grew again!

What went wrong was a lot of things, mainly from the start. It was rejected by Viz media, outlined by Hussie, given to writers who had no office for coordination except maybe an online server, weird mandatory plot threads by Hussie, too many plot lines, and writers who got unfairly harassed by the fans (and a few bad eggs like Kate Mitchell and OptimisticDuelist on the writing team unfairly giving other HS2 members a bad rep)

I really didn’t want HS2 to fail when it came out, it just didn’t work for me, and I’m sad that I joined this fandom in late 2018 in an age of hype and promise only to continue seeing official content blunder while fan content soars.

All in all, Homestuck^2 was a good thing in the wrong place at the wrong time raised by the wrong village. Post-canon has been dead since HS2 went on hiatus, it should be remembered and archived as a failed experiment, rushed by financial issues and fandom miscommunication. Salvage what you like from it, because you’re not gonna see more from Homestuck.
