This post Angband board is one of my very favorite visual Maedhros pieces I’ve done and for the past two years I've posted an edited and revise version!
Maedhros in Angband is perhaps my favorite Maedhros but brutal, ruthless and traumatized warlord Maedhros in Himring is such a close second. In addition to the weight of the oath, I'm obsessed with quest for revenge; ruthless, coordinated, and at times contained by the wisdom of his councilors or even kin but it is never impersonal

Visual notes: -for anyone worried the photo of the scars is from makeup artist Kristyan Mallett -I’ve talked and thought a lot about snow leopards as symbols and guardians of Himring; beautiful but heavily guarded and deadly. More in the himring tag! -Look I know the bottles are cliched in boards but I like that one for the corrosive word more than regret plus it fit the color scheme

Obsessed with the idea of Maedhros being programmed to react to crying babies.
Like, anyone could hand Maedhros a baby elfling, edain, or anything else humanoid and he’ll just Take The Baby and start cradling it on instinct.
This guy has six (6) younger brothers.
Imagining a scenario where post-angband Maedhros is sleeping (miraculously) but someone’s baby starts crying outside his tent and Maedhros just, shoots straight up immediately like “where is baby. Why is baby crying.” And it’s the most encouraging thing that Mae’s done since Fingon rescued him.

Maedhros has learned the black speech in Angband, can speak it fluently & very much prefers death than ever admitting it to anyone

I was just spontaneously hit by sadness over Finrod's fate. We often make fun of him for the let's-challenge-Sauron-to-a-rap-battle-to-the-death idea, which is then often compared to Fingolfin, but I keep thinking about how absolutely terrified he must have been.
Because, contrary to Fingolfin, he did not want to fight Sauron. He probably didn't want to be on this quest at all. He went out of loyalty to the son of his friend, and because of the oath he had sworn, but I highly doubt he enjoyed the thought of going on a suicide quest to steal a Silmaril. Finrod wasn't stupid after all, he knew their chances of survival, and he had probably already made peace with the thought of his death.
And then, after he gets betrayed and abandoned, he suddenly ends up in Sauron's throne room. And Sauron starts singing.
That wasn't a dramatic act of bravery the way it was in Fingolfin's case (though it was of course incredibly brave) (and less stupid), but of pure desperation. They had maybe seconds left until their disguises failed, so Finrod had to do something right now. So he just started singing.
And I just keep thinking about how afraid he must have been. He just started a singing contest with an Ainur. One might think that he really wasn't risking anything when doing it, the result of loosing would be that same as doing nothing at all, but that's not the case.
Had Finrod not started singing, Sauron would have seen through their disguises immediately and probably just killed them. End of the story. As it is, the disguises fail anyway, but now Sauron is faced with an elf who can stand against him in songs of power. He is both angry and curious.
And, as I said, Finrod isn't stupid. He has seen the scars on Maedhros body.
He took the greatest risk possible when fighting Sauron, and he escaped only so closely from paying the greatest price possible. Really, being killed by that wolf shortly before Luthien arrived was tragic, but from Finrod's perspective, who had no idea that Luthien was coming, that was probably the most optimal outcome.
I know this is nothing new that hasn't been analysed in 200 fics and tumblr posts before, but, you know, I was sad, so I shared my pain with the fandom the way we do it here 🙂

You know how hair can turn white when a person is put under immense stress and trauma? You know how after Angband Maedhros’ spirit burned like white fire within? Is that anything or?

Winter headcanons for the March of Maedhros
More in the himring and beleriand tags!
World Building Masterlist
Send me a location and I’ll write some winter HCs!
-Temperatures drop to the extent that access to water can become a concern. Wells that are fed from groundwater can freeze and the rivers and lakes become even more dangerous to venture upon. Water is sometimes sourced from snow which is boiled to distill it.
Second Note: I have a post about water in Himring here!
-Heated stones, primarily obsidian and certain types of sandstone are heated and wrapped in cloth as a treatment for lasting pain. The relief is fairly short lived but especially for the duration of the treatment can be incredibly soothing. Maedhros himself has benefited from this as have the many residents of Himring with lasting effects of injuries from battle, or, in some cases, torture. Changes in weather can exacerbate chronic pain and other conditions including mobility, mood, and other functions.
-The soldiers of Himring often sleep in extremely close quarters during the winter for warmth, especially when firewood is scarce. Scouts and spies limit their fires when away from the citadel to limit the possibility of being seen.
-Warm clothing and materials come from wool imported from Thargelion, and from reindeer, ermine and rabbit native to the March. Feathers from snow and tundra geese are also used for insulation.
-Much food is preserved for cold winters and for the soldiers and scouts who rotate out and need food that can last. Methods of food preservation are learned from the dwarves who aided in the construction of Himring as well as through trial and error (These are still Noldor and take pride in experimenting and exploring). Himring utilizes more of these methods than many other elven realms. Salted meat, stocks and broths that can be quickly heated over a fire, root vegetables, dried fruit from the summer, usually orchard fruit like apples that can grow in colder climates.
-There is a ghost story told by the scouts of Himring of elves who simply walk away into the winter wilderness and are never seen again. These elves were said to appear in a trance like state or to appear as though something has caught their attention. These stories are often implicitly associated with former thralls, who are often thought of or depicted as ghosts, transient, or otherwise eerie.

The best argument for Orodreth being Finarfin’s son rather than Angrod’s is that otherwise, leaving him in charge of Tol Sirion is a MAJOR violation of the otherwise consistent rule that youngest siblings/babies of the house go as far behind the front lines of the Siege as possible (Ambarussa in Estolad, to an extent Curufin in Himlad; Aredhel & Turgon (& little Idril!) in Nevrast; Galadriel in Doriath. Maedhros has never been more impressed with Finrod than in watching him maneuver his ambitious, fighty baby sister into staying behind an impenetrable maian shield)

Nghhh chewing on finweans and realizing how self-sacraficial is so deeply instilled in that family, and that that particular trait is prevalent in each generation.
Finwe knew he couldnt win against Morgoth, but he could try and protect his grandchildren. He fought regardless.
Fingolfin knew he couldnt twin against Morgoth in 1-on-1. He fought regardless.
Finrod knew he would die on his quest for Beren, and still fought the wolf to save his friend. He did.
Celebrimbor knew he could protect others by dying, protecting the knowledge about the rings. He did.
It stands to reason that Elladan, Elrohir or Arwen, would have come upon a similar fate.
#sometimes it just hits me with a sledgehammer like that family (esp the feanorian side) is portrayed as selfish a lot#(instert 'justice for caranthir for tslling Angrod to fucking stick with the people who arent hiding in Menegroth from Morgoth'-agenda)#(insert 'feanor was a selfish prick by abandoning the others in aman and forcing his sons to re-swear the oath upon his death' rant)#but i still think they are actually more opputunistic when you REALLY want to put a word ending with -istic there#feanor saw the opportunity to leave aman. fuck the brother he never liked. feanor only needs the people who'll be loyal to his family anyway#curufin saw the opportunity to get support form those of nagothrongld after he and celegorm had to flee like cowards from the dragons#which. for two people who i think have immense pride in their battle skill and strength must have been a HUGE ego blow#celegorm saw the opportunity to either: fuck over doriath and thingol by keeping luthien as political leverage (i dont think he's have#forced himself on her intimately. so fuck that. idc man. leave that shit away from me. he's an asshole but not a rapist imo anyway)#or: get a silmaril out of this mess SOMEHOW.#maedhros saw the opportunity of a possibly successful assault on angband after the silmaril quest of B+L and immediately began warplanning#and realistically speaking you cant tell me that maedhros didn't see the opportunity to casually drop the fact that it was HIS brothers and#HIMSELF holding basically all the eastern lands of beleriand in safety by closing off the Gap of Maglor while... where have you heard vague#rumours of turgon and ⅓ of the nolofinwean people maybe possibly not having died after suddenly disappearing? yeah. thought so.#just the opportunity to make slight political jibes available to shut anyone up about them being selfish#this is a weird post idk where this is going i stopped thinkig halfway though the second sentence#somehow that tag rant veered from self-sacraficial to opportunistic. didnt have that on my bingo card

I’ve been wanting to post this somewhere, and I don’t think I want to stick it on Ao3 without the associated fic, which isn’t yet ready. But I still want to share it. So here you go - see what you make of it:
Song composed by a thrall of Morgoth, free in body but still chained in mind and soul
I looked in the mirror, and what did I see
But my glassy twin sister there looking at me?
“Come through!” she said to me. “O, come through and see
All the world topsy-turvy and happy and free!
Come through, my twin sister! Come, come mirror-side
Where the world is all backwards and happy and wide!
Here the Moon shines all day and the Sun shines all night
And the mines are aboveground and darkness is light
And the Sea is the land and the land is the Sea
All the orcs are locked up and the elves all run free
And the wolves are all mousers, the cats chase their tails
The Lieutenant he forges our horseshoes and nails
We sleep all the night long, and we dance through the day
And we get lots of orders we never obey
And the ravens are sweet-voiced, and joyful they sing
For the King is a thrall, and the thralls are all kings.”
