What a fantastic read it was! I was really touched with this fanfic. It is set in ancient China but there's no guest lectures. There's also a podfic for lazy readers like me xD @reluctantways
Kay: This lovely person also created the lovely header for the fic rec!

M, 54k, Wangxian
Summary: Lan Wangji could not hope to find any other person like this, at least not so far from their home. But wu speak to birds and beasts across the realm. He may be known to them. He may be recognized, somewhere. The ravens and the hawks hear the name and cry it to the skies; the mouse and the fox both carry it with them through snow-washed fields. Below ground the beetles gnaw it into roots and bark. Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian. OR: Tasked with finding the Yunmeng Jiang's missing wu, a young man called Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji recruits a familiar and travels across the land in search of him. His familiar, a black hare with a little too much personality, seems to have his own secrets.

i'm feeling devious (you're looking glamorous)
Author: fivecenturiesverse Fandom: Stranger Things
Summary: Steve Harrington is secretly a nerd. He's also, in Eddie's opinion, a massive dick. (Or: five times nobody but Eddie believes that Steve is a giant nerd, and one time he tells everyone else.)
Readers Notes: This fic is light, fluffy, and touchingly real. Amazing writing with great characterization, what’s not to love? The author captures Eddie’s frustration and astonishment beautifully, managing to balance the humor of the situation with a plot that’s lightweight enough to feel approachable and is easily digestible. While this fic isn’t a steddie must read, its definitely a should read.

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. Reminder: This list features any and all ratings and themes.
ATLA
Perfection is Overrated by JaggedCliffs (+ podfic) (NOTE: I've recced this fic before and I'll rec it again. When I die, I want to be buried with this fic)
For his first thirteen years, Zuko was raised in a palace. And yet somehow, it's the three years outside the Fire Nation that seem to count more – at least to the palace staff, who act like he's been raised by fox-wolves.
At first, this only annoys Zuko.
Until he begins to think that the Fire Nation needs more than a formerly-banished prince.
a brush of fingers, a kick of shins by lesmiserablol (+ podfic)
"Okay, I’ve been thinking all day, and here’s my idea,” Toph tells Zuko on their way to dinner. “You’re so sure he’s not into you, so I’m going to help you out and give you a gentle nudge every time he flirts so that you notice it.”
“Okay,” Zuko says slowly. He doubts it will be necessary, he and Sokka have been best friends for over five years now and that is probably all that Sokka thinks of him as. A good friend. “I don’t know if it’ll come up, but if it does...just don’t make it obvious, yeah?”
“Don’t worry, I have a plan,” Toph smiles. Zuko knows her fairly well, he knows he should be worried at that, but he just follows her into the dining hall.
Stranger Things
who wants to live forever? by starbeyy
In which Steve Harrington has two nightmares: The one he has about the fire at the Starcourt Mall every time he falls asleep, and the one where Eddie Munson visits him at Family Video to ask him for a favor.
shape it up (get it straight) by fivecenturiesverse (+ podfic)
Mike doesn't know when he started caring why Steve and Eddie are friends now, but Dustin has made him curious. Eddie and Steve were enemies before, sort of. So why are they now best friends? They've just got to do a bit of surveillance to work this puzzle out. If Mike accidentally finds out he has feelings for his best friend along the way then... well, shit.
-
“At least I’m not using binoculars.” Mike shoots a derisive look over at Dustin. “Like we’re not in the middle of the high street, if they spot us how are you going to explain away those, huh?”
“Bird watching,” says Dustin. “My new hobby.”
Lucas punches him on the arm. “God you’re so fucking stupid.”
“You gave them to me!”
Shadowhunters
Portable Magic by smilebackwards
Magnus may go slightly overboard helping Alec set up for the book club gathering.
Technically, perhaps, he didn’t need to create a signature cocktail or barter a favor to Raphael for O neg blood for the vampires or source the biscotti directly from Italy. But hospitality is important and these are Alec’s friends. He wants to make a good impression.
Or: Alec is in a Downworld book club and Magnus finds this unaccountably fascinating.
count the ways by smilebackwards
"I know the nephilim have some truly skewed perspectives on our history and culture but have you ever seen anything like this before?” Magnus holds out the book, open to Warlock Courting Traditions. The text only takes up half a page, a mystifying run-on list of odd and impossible tasks. It’s formatted almost like poetry and his dear, pedantic Alexander has turned it into a checklist, penciled lightly down the margin.
Ragnor snorts into his tea.
“Oh,” Catarina says, looking at the book. “That."
In somno veritas (In sleep lies the truth) by lawsofchaos (+podfic)
Jace blinks, peering at the loft in vague stupefaction. “This,” and Alec’s parabatai’s voice sounds like he’s dragging each noise out from his exhausted mind and forcing it out before he can forget what word he just discovered. “Isn’t the Institute?” The final phrase comes out as a question.
Alec tilts his head in puzzlement, glancing at his brother as if wondering how he could possibly consider that Alec had taken them there instead of here. “No?”
Alec’s head moves back to level and he narrows his eyes instead. “We said we were going home after patrol.”
The ‘ergo, we are home now’ wasn’t said, but it was obvious in implication.
bloom by smilebackwards
Alec loves watching Izzy get flowers but he thinks he would have liked, just once, to know what it felt like for someone to send him something so bright and sweet, frivolous, just because they cared.

Catholic!Frank and Artist!Gerard Not!Fic by Sena [21k]
Mature | Frank/Gerard, Gabe/Mikey
I'm working on another story where teenage Frank is like, "Man, fuck the Catholic church for telling me I'm not supposed to like cock." And while writing it, I got this image in my head of a different Frank, a Frank who, like, really had faith in God and who was struggling to be the kind of person the church would approve of.
I tried writing it, but quickly realized that it was just way too big for me. Like, if I actually tried to do it justice it would take me years, and I don't really have that sort of work ethic. So it became a not!fic. Yay?
Another fic that didn't hit the first time around for unknown reasons, but was actually really good after reevaluating it years later. Like, this hit all of my bases. Soooo much yearning and really heartwarming how it wraps up, it's such a great universe.

read it on ao3   |   masterlist   |   with a wonderful podfic by GodOfLaundryBaskets and @fensandmarshes !
Fandom: Dimension 20 (Neverafter)
TWs: canon-typical body horror, blood, past canonical character death, grave robbing?? technically??, corpses
Wordcount: 632
Originally Published: December 31, 2022
Summary: The mice chew, and Rosamund bares her teeth, chomps down on bristling vines and brittle buds, spits out with blood.
She pulls the briars out—leaf by leaf, petal by petal, thorn by thorn, root from flesh—and when they try to reclaim her, she turns the spindle against them.
Fairy magic, she decides, as she watches writhing plant matter blacken and crumble and still, has something to it after all, even if she's not quite sure she believes in fairies quite the same way anymore.
(Or: Once upon a time, in the Kingdom of Reverie, a new story started, and this one is not going to go the way it's supposed to—not at all.)
Notes: wrote this during and post e4, definitely pre-e5, so it spins off from there. I have more that I'd like to get around to adding later that's already decidedly not canon compliant (though I guess this one could kind of be read as such?), but who knows if or when that'll ever happen tbh.
Transfer Notes: n/a
Rosamund du Prix wakes up, and the thorns are thick in her throat and her prince is not there and this world is oh-so-very wrong and not kind, not even so much as the last.
But here's the thing: Rosamund the Last was blessed for grace, and beauty, and sleep.
Rosamund Now, one way or another, has seven fairies in her corner.
Rosamund Now is strong, in a way just a step to the left of how she was before, and maybe one or two forward as well.
The briars won't leave, not even if she tries to make them. (They're stronger here, too.)
That's fine, though.
(Stories have a strange way of carrying on the actions of the dead.)
The mice chew, and Rosamund bares her teeth, chomps down on bristling vines and brittle buds, spits out with blood.
She wields the spindle like a weapon as she walks, eerily silent mice trailing in her wake, and takes what she needs as she must.
The curse was just supposed to kill her, she thought. (The sleep was just supposed to take her.)
The castle, though, tells a different story, as the one she walked through before did.
Not a soul in the last kingdom was spared the sleep. She has no hope for this one, either.
There are more foreign corpses in the vines, though, more blood; age and weather seems to have touched Reverie's subjects a little bit more here than she remembers, and she shudders to think how they will wake. (If they will wake, she allows herself, for the very first time, to truly, truly consider.)
She re-fashions her bow as she goes. She grabs a knife from the kitchens, a quiver of arrows from the armoury; a sword she has to wrench from a nameless prince's stiff and brittle fingers, a mostly salvageable cloak she pulls from another's bones.
This isn't like the last time. She has a goal, now, and that isn't trying to find a needle in a haystack, or waiting for them to find her.
If she concentrates, the world around her hums and shifts, and she can feel every thread.
What was it Cinderella had said Snow White saw?
A tapestry?
Rosamund thinks she gets it now.
She thinks that if she really, really tried, she could maybe take a step back, and glimpse at part of the picture this world is supposed to make of them.
But—no. That's not—quite for her.
She has a method of her own, she thinks, feels, knows.
After all—Rosamund breathes the first fresh air outside of a briar-filled hell that she has in decades four and a half months earlier than she did last time, and sets her feet on a path her mind makes for her, to a small town she's never visited, some kingdoms over—because Rosamund has friends now, doesn't she? And, perhaps not quite as importantly, she'd touched an object from—beyond the storyline, so to speak.
Rosamund breathes deep, and it is Mother Goose's book she uses as a beacon to guide her when she moves. Further, fainter, she can feel the shard from Cinderella, and she knows, in her heart of hearts that cannot be rewritten, that her new friends are making their way together just the same, if Gerard is anything to go by.
This world is different.
So are they.

💙 Contingency Plan
by krispy_kream
M, 8k | 1,5h, Wangxian
Summary: “You’ll still love me when we’re old and ugly, right?” Wei Wuxian asks. “We’ll have each other while everyone else is busy with their kids and their dogs and annoying in-laws.” And Lan Wangji asks, "Why Wait?" Kay's comments: I don't have words, this story was just so incredibly funny and cute and it made me shriek in delight every other line. The absolute peak of idiots-to-lovers, never have I seen the trope written so well! Wangxian truly deserve each other! The way they get married for tax reasons and housing benefits and both just go: but we do this as friends obviously and my feelings will never be returned but that's fine because we're friends :) Just. Perfectionn. Also, the line in the excerpt about living with Wei Ying being like living with a pet is the best line ever period. Also, this story is also available as a podfic!! Excerpt: Living with Wei Ying is a lot like owning a pet. Not that Lan Wangji thinks of him as such, that would be inappropriate, but he demands attention in a similar fashion and Lan Wangji often finds him eating things he shouldn’t, so there are similarities. “I will cook,” Lan Wangji insists when he catches Wei Ying dipping doritos in cup noodles. “What, for both of us? You don’t have to do that—” Wei Ying tries, but Lan Wangji is already ripping open the fridge to keep himself from ripping the cup noodle from Wei Ying’s hand. “I seem to recall a contingency plan that involved me as acting housewife,” Lan Wangji says. “That wasn’t—!” Wei Ying splutters. “I didn’t say housewife.” “Mn,” Lan Wangji agrees with a small twist of amusement. “You used far more words.”
podfic available, podfic length: 1-1.5 hours, pov lan wangji, modern setting, modern no powers, idiots in love, getting together, marriage of convenience, friends to lovers, moving in together, marriage proposal, mutual pining, humor, fluff and humor

Ars Gratis Artis
Author: nirejseki Fandom: The Flash (TV 2014)
Summary: Len probably should have thought twice before he revealed to everybody just how good an artist Mick is.
(years later, Mick pays him back for it)
Readers Notes: You can’t go wrong with a nirejseki fic. I swear they’ve written half the fics for this ship! This is a short and fun read! The captivating descriptions of Mick’s art draw me in every time. Len as well is always such a fun character and his combo of clueless youth and cunning manipulator is always a difficult balance to find. Litra’s podfic is, as usual, masterfully done, they’ve really got a lock on the voices for these characters!

On the Midtown Direct series by mistresscurvy [24k all together]
Explicit | Frank/Gerard
Gerard Way has a system: a system for managing his life as a city architect, a system for being a single man living in a house in Jersey he still thinks of as his grandmother's and not his own, a system for finding one of the four solo seats in each car on the train into Manhattan every morning.
He likes his system. It works. His system derails when Frank Iero sits across from him on the 7:59 Midtown Direct one sunny morning in May.
A love story, one train ride at a time.
For some reason I don't think I ever actually rec-ed this, which is genuinely astonishing. Maybe I figured it's such a popular fic it'd be dumb to rec? I have no clue, but it needs to be on here no matter it's status. Anyway, adorable, obviously. A classic!!!!!
