#celibacy
aroaceconfessions · 9 hours ago
I saw a friend post on Twitter that they made it a whole month being celibate and they’re so proud of themselves and all the replies were from people also being like “yess I’m 2 months celibate, it’s so hard but I’m hanging in there” and I was like wow I guess I really am ace lol. It was so illuminating for me to see that people actually desire sex so much that refraining from it for even a month is a huge deal🤯. Like this is a real need for people? Not just something overhyped in movies, music, and tv shows? Mindblowing to me

Is it true that the Catholic Church demanded celibacy because they didn't want to share property with descendants?
No, priests are celibate in imitation of Christ who's bride is The Church, in other words, priests are married to The Church and therefore can't marry someone else. Nuns/religious sisters that take up vows of celibacy are similarly considered to be brides of Christ.
Priests are meant to be fully devoted to tending their flocks (their spiritual children), if a priest had a wife and children on top of that he would have to divide his care and attention and it would be unfair to both his family and his congregation. Husbands are expected to be ready to die for their wives and children, priests are expected to be ready to die for The Church and their flock, there's no way he could be fully devoted to both.
Voluntary celibacy has always been considered a way of devoting oneself entirely to God -not to a family or spouse. Marriage is a good and holy thing, but it requires you to devote a large part of your time to your family. By remaining celibate a person can fully give themselves to a relationship with God.

In Sparta and many other Greek cities, failure to marry was grounds for loss of citizenship, and could be prosecuted as a crime. Both Cicero and Dionysius of Halicarnassus stated that Roman law forbade celibacy. There are no records of such a prosecution, nor is the Roman punishment for refusing to marry known.

Celibacy has existed in one form or another throughout history, in virtually all the major religions of the world, and views on it have varied. Judaism strongly opposes celibacy. However, the priests of the Essenes, a Jewish sect during the Second Temple period, practised celibacy. The Romans viewed celibacy as an aberration and legislated fiscal penalties against it, with the sole exception granted to the Vestal Virgins. The Islamic attitudes toward celibacy have been straight forward. Several Hadiths indicate that Prophet Muhammad denounced celibacy.

Saw a video the other day about women seeking independence, and the pipeline to celibacy. i couldn’t watch it bc i am realizing that as much as i would love to have sex with attractive people, I simply would rather be alone. The thrill of a one night stand isn’t enough, but literally no one is attractive to me once I talk to them too long. Like, it’ll be too much work to go through the talking phase with someone who i know i have no intention of actually dating because i can not find anyone who can match me well enough to think in terms of “forever” beyond platonic relationships.

I don’t want to have children, ever. The thought of being someone’s mother is terrifying. I know that motherhood would not make me happy. It would make me miserable probably. But most lesbians seem to want to have kids, so here’s another reason that might lead me to be a single cat lady. But that’s fine with me.

Aroace and nonbinary inclusion in "The Acts of Paul" (not the Acts in the Bible)
Just finished up week three of seminary, where we discussed various apocryphal letters and acts (i.e. writings from the 1st and 2nd centuries that weren't included in the Bible).
My professor / church leader blew my mind when she mentioned the Acts of Paul features asexual and agender representation. So, naturally, I'm likely going to do my final presentation on this text.
Here's a summary in the meantime.
Paul's teachings on celibacy:
[pt. II, pp. 5] "Blessed are they that keep the flesh chaste, for they shall become the temple of God.
"Blessed are they that abstain (or the continent), for unto them shall God speak.
"Blessed are they that have renounced this world, for they shall be well-pleasing unto God."
[pt. II, pp. 6] "Blessed are the bodies of the virgins, for they shall be well- pleasing unto God and shall not lose the reward of their continence (chastity), for the word of the Father shall be unto them a work of salvation in the day of his Son, and they shall have rest world Without [sic] end."
Heroic portrayals of an aroace-coded character:
[pt. II, pp. 22] "Now the boys and the maidens brought wood and hay to burn Thecla [a virgin more interested in following Paul's teachings than getting married] ... And they lighted it, and though a great fire blazed forth, the fire took no hold on her; for God had compassion on her, and caused a sound under the earth, and a cloud overshadowed her above, full of rain and hail, and all the vessel of it was poured out so that many were in peril of death, and the fire was quenched, and Thecla was preserved."
[pt. II, pp. 27-28] "But [Thecla's would-be abuser] alike loving her and being ashamed of what had befallen him [Thecla's rejection], brought her before the governor; and when she confessed that she had done this, he condemned her to the beasts; ... Now when the beasts were led in procession, they bound her to a fierce lioness, ... but the lioness, when Thecla was set upon her, licked her feet, and all the people marvelled."
Instances of characters rejecting or challenging gender norms:
[pt. II, pp. 25] "And Thecla said unto Paul: I will cut my hair round about and follow thee whithersoever thou goest."
[pt. II, pp. 34] "And when she had ended her prayer, [Thecla] turned and saw a great tank full of water, and said: Now is it time that I should wash myself. And she cast herself in, saying: In the name of Jesus Christ do I baptize myself on the last day."
[pt. II, pp. 40] "[Thecla] sewed her mantle into a cloak after the fashion of a man"
[pt. II, pp. 41] "And Thecla arose and said to Paul: I go unto Iconium. And Paul said: Go, and teach the word of God."
[pt. VIII] "But Eubula and Artemilla, wives of eminent men among the Ephesians, being his attached disciples"

After years of being a Reverend Sister, lady quits celibacy as she decides to serve God in marriage
After years of being a Reverend Sister, lady quits celibacy as she decides to serve God in marriage
A Reverand Sister who professes the Catholic faith has decided, after years of servanthood, to choose marriage over celibacy. In the Catholic faith, Reverend Sisters just like their male counterparts are supposed to lead a chaste life; a life dedicated to serving God only. The dictates of the catholic faith backed by Biblical references forbid individuals who want to serve in the church from…

So apparently Richard Sipe is a former Catholic priest and psychotherapist who became a well known activist who dedicated his life to fighting for sexual abuse survivors within the Church and advocated for change and I have never heard of him until now????? He wrote several books on the subject of the abuse crisis and celibacy and has a documentary about his work????? He was mentioned in the movie Spotlight too???? I gotta track down his books and read them for myself AND watch whatever films or documentaries he was in, I would be very interested to hear what this man had to say and knew. Maybe I'll post a little book review whenever I get around to reading his books.

Liu Kang: Is it true that Shaolin monks take a vow of celibacy? Was it difficult for you and Kung Lao to choose to break it?
“From the time we are young, we are made aware of the dangers of... Temptation. How it clouds the mind, what untamed passion does to the soul.” The young man sat cross-legged upon stone, hands in his lap.
“I cannot say that it was easy, the weight of such a vital teaching of our hanging over us like that. but...” The brunette took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts to speak again.
“We have found that a bond such as ours, it nurtures us. Makes us stronger. It is more than infatuation. To make the choice was a natural progression. Never something to be taken lightly, yet something that felt right, even if tradition did not come to the same judgement. I have no regrets, and neither does he.” That is a certainty within Liu Kang’s mind, for he knows Kung Lao’s heart, and the same can be said in the reverse.

Not sure why but lately I have been having the most intense dreams about sex... but I chose to be celibate most of the year I feel like the feeling of depriving myself of the act has either broadened my will to survive without it or stressed me out even more. Am I the only one who feels this way? Am I a weirdo for dreaming about it? Like I kinda feel like I’m going crazy but staying sane at the same time. Sexual frustration is definitely real but at the same time not depending on it has made me realize it’s not always a need.
