PMDD awareness month is almost over, but there‘s still 11 days left for pre-ordering my PMDD t-shirt on Everpress!

I myself suffer from the premenstrual dysphoric disorder. As of now I had to teach every doctor about this condition because it is still pretty unknown. This has to change because so many people don't know they have this condition. Some get wrong diagnoses like borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder. But PMDD is a neurobiological sensitivity to natural and normal changes in progesterone and estrogen levels.
The symptoms can include anxiety, depression, irritability, extreme anger, hopelessness and suicidal tendencies.
In a recent study with 599 individuals that have been diagnosed with PMDD, »34% have attempted suicide during a PMDD episode. On average, patients waited 12 years and saw around six providers before receiving an accurate diagnosis of PMDD.
The data also showed high rates of lifetime active suicidal ideation (72%), planning (49%), intent (42%) and preparing (40%) for an attempt, and non-suicidal self-injury (51%) among patients with PMDD diagnoses.« (source: https://neurosciencenews.com/pmdd-suicide-20820/)
In my case, I only have two out of four weeks in which I can function. The other two weeks are always a struggle. And sometimes in the good half of the month I have to recover from the hell weeks, because these experiences alone can be traumatizing.
PMDD impacts every aspect of my life. Relationships, work, taking care of basic needs, interests and hobbies, anything. Everything seems meaningless, everything is called into question. Every month.
Part of why this disorder has not gotten a lot of attention is sexism. The patriarchy leads to medical issues that mostly impact women being ignored. This means that there is a lack of clinical studies and there is no cure for PMDD. There are a lot of ways to try and treat the symptoms, but every affected person has to do their own research. We all have to go through a lot of trial and error which is extremely frustrating.
This needs to change. I hope that with this project, I can contribute to spreading awareness.

When I was a teenager I took my mom’s whole bottle of Xanax a couple of weeks before my 19th birthday because I wanted to die. Plain and simple. I. Needed. To. Die…I still remember watching myself do it, like from a bird-eyes view. Dissociated. I blacked in &out of consciousness for 48hours &spent 4 days in a mental facility. 11 years later, family matters are way worse now to the point I’ve cut off all contact. I’ve gotten much stronger and I’m so thankful to be here because The Most High put something great inside of my soul. In 2020, I felt hopeless &plotted on death again. Christ met me at my lowest &The Holy Spirit made itself known to me. God showed me my true power &worth. I promise to make You proud for saving me. You are my everything. I realize now that I’ve never been alone. The stone the builders refused will be the key cornerstone. 👑

as an Autistic person i am grateful for autism acceptance month and the advocacy shown by fellow Autistics but i also want to remind everyone that April is also PMDD awareness month which gets far too little attention, empathy and research. I did not know anything about PMDD before developing it 4 years ago and it has made my life absolutely unbearable for most of those 4 years. i am now at the point where my last resort may be inducing menopause in my body and people will still think that it's "jUsT pMs" and "moody women on their periods" while I'm trying not to throw myself off a bridge two weeks out of every month.
so i am begging you to sit down this month and educate yourself on PMDD and what it is (and is not), particularly from people with PMDD themselves

✨ March is Endometriosis Awareness Month! ✨
I just wanted to take a short moment this morning because, although it's nearly the end of the month, it's an important topic I want to cover with any of my uterus-owning followers. I know I don't often talk about real-life things on this blog, but repro-issue visibility is important to me and so is healthcare!
If you don't already know, I have a chronic disease called Endometriosis which has effectively stunted my quality of life for most of my teen and adult years. I am Stage Four, but have been in remission since 2019.
If you ever feel immense emotional changes or pain during cycles, please know you are seen and you are valid! Your pain is not normal. Your suffering is not normal. So many doctors dismiss uterus owners but I just want to tell you that you can fight for advocacy and push back.
You are not alone in this world if you have anything like Endo, PCOS, PMDD, Adenomyosis, etc. Awareness and conversations about these diseases that diminish quality of life to millions are so important, and my inbox/dms are always open to my followers and mutuals if you're going through something and need someone to listen. Hello, I was hoping to ask about schizoaffective disorder depressive type if that is okay with you.
I saw a new therapist today and talked about past hallucinations and stuff I’ve had and whatever and it led to her suspecting shizoaffective disorder depressive type. I saw a post of you saying that there’s not much resources on depressive type and in researching today I have found the same thing to be true. I would like to ask what your experience is like having this disorder, and what it looks like on a day to day. While the disorder seems to fit me I worry that I’m faking and that I’m not that bad off… I have very mixed feelings.

Hi anon! There aren’t many resources on Schizoaffective depressive type, and I don’t have any that I can remember off the top of my head.
I can tell you what mine was like though. Below this cut will be talk about suicidal tendencies, homicidal thoughts, and depression.
My experience has been rocky. I started showing signs very young, and started hallucinating very young as well. For as long as I could remember I was hallucinating and having delusions. I was also showing signs of depression at a very young age, as well as very extreme depressive mood swings.
I would have these mood swings, where one minute I was fine, and the next minute I’d be crying and having suicidal thoughts and ideations. These mood swings were severe, and continued to ruin my life. Because of these mood swings, and homicidal thoughts as well as paranoid thoughts, I was hospitalized several times for months at a time throughout my youth.
My mood swings continued to get worse into my teens, especially during my period, which I at the time thought was PMDD, but later learned it was just the increase of emotions plus my mood swings, dangerously swirling together.
Although I had delusions, I almost always experienced something called “double bookkeeping” meaning I was aware of my delusions being fake, however still believed that they were real to an extent and had to act on them. This is apparently a pretty rare thing to have and do? But I’m not sure how true that is.
No doctor knew what was wrong with me, and they had thrown around the word schizophrenia for awhile but didn’t want to diagnose me with it because I was so young. Throughout the years, I learned to mask my disorder, and basically make myself look and feel ok although I constantly felt like I was faking it. I continued to have extreme depressive mood swings, but not to the point I needed to be hospitalized.
After awhile, I took a break from medications and doctors because I was quite frankly done with it and just wanted some time to breathe. I quickly realized that I wouldn’t be able to continue my life off medication and at 19 I saw a psych who finally gave me the answers. She knew exactly what was wrong with me and I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder depressive type within the first appointment.
I feel like the diagnosis fits me well. I am on medication now and I’m the most stable I have been in a very very long time. It has taken three hospital stays, dozens of medication trials, dozens of doctors, to get here. But I’m here and finally happy.
I still experience a lot of symptoms, especially negative symptoms. But I take it one day at a time.

Hello. My period dates keep changing. Is it normal? There's no other problems I'm feeling but the changing period dates make it harder to make plans.
Hi Anon,
By "dates" - do you mean the number of days in your cycle, or do you mean that you are expecting your period to fall on the same day of the month each month?
If you mean the first (actual # of days in your cycle keeps changing), it depends on how long its been since you got your first period, and how much the change is month-to-month.
If it's been within 2 years of your first period and your periods have never been regular, normal.
If your cycles are always between 21 and 35 days long, probably normal.
If your actual menses is 7 days or less, normal.
If any of these things is not true, it's good to get checked out to rule out any potentially underlying issues!
If you mean the second (period starts on a different "date" in the calendar month-to-month), then the issue may just be that you're tracking your period incorrectly!
Either way, this is a great jumping off point for a post I've been meaning to do!
TRACKING YOUR MENSTRUAL CYCLE
Why should I track my menstrual cycle?
Helps to predict your next menses, so you can plan ahead.
Can be used to identify fertile days to either avoid or promote conception, or identify a pregnancy very early
Tracking your "normal" can help identify changes that may be indicative of an underlying problem
Can identify if you experience PMS/PMDD, and see it coming.
Generally promotes awareness of your own body and health
The goal is to figure out what's normal FOR YOU! Once your periods have settled into a regular pattern (usually within 2 years after menarche), they should remain relatively consistent.
How do I track my menstrual cycle?
BASIC CYCLE TRACKING
At least to start, I recommend doing this on paper or on a digital file you keep on your local device. It helps with developing the skill and your understanding of your cycle, and protects your privacy. (As another Tumblrina mentioned, not all period apps protect privacy, which may matter in states with draconian anti-choice laws).
You can do it right in your school planner, on a wall calendar, or on a printed piece of paper like this. You can even do it in a google calendar. The format doesn't really matter!

Here's how it works:
Mark the 1st day of your period. This is the 1st day of your whole cycle. When a provider asks you when your "last menstrual period" (or LMP) was, this is the date they are asking about.
Indicate each day that you bleed. Periods are usually between 3-7 days. If you have spotting/light bleeding in between periods, note this too. When your provider asks how long your periods are, this is the number they want.
Note the heaviness of your flow. Periods usually start out relatively heavy, and lighten over the course of a few days. "Heavy" is often defined as soaking through 1 or more super pads/tampons every hour for several hours, needing to double-up on protection, or needing to change protection overnight. You can identify this by using different colors, or a code like H/M/L, a series of dots, or whatever makes sense to you.
Count your cycle length. When your next period starts, that's your new day 1. Count up the number of days from your last cycle's day 1 to the last day before this new cycle. The total number of days is your cycle length! It should be between 21 and 35 days, and the average is 28 days. Record this number. When your provider asks how long your menstrual cycle is, this is the number they want!
Start again! Over a few cycles, you will be able to see what your average cycle length is, how long your average flow is, whether there are fluctuations in these (and by how much), how much it changes, and how heavy your overall bleeding is.
Calculate your next cycle based on your average. If your average cycle is 28 days, or 4 weeks, and your last period started on September 1, your next cycle would be expected to start on September 29 - NOT October 1! If it's the first cycle you're tracking, you can make a guess of 28 days/4 weeks.
INTERMEDIATE CYCLE TRACKING
And that's not all! You can keep track of other things, like:
Physical symptoms
Pain (cramps with your period or otherwise - some people experience a pain mid-cycle that's actually ovulatory pain, called mittelschmertz)
Breast tenderness
Fatigue
Headaches
Vaginal discharge
Psychological symptoms (these are most likely to come in the back half of your cycle, after ovulation - the luteal phase)
Mood swings/lability of affect
More intensity of emotions, especially irritability, sadness, anger
Depression-like symptoms
Changes in libido
If you notice patterns in these, that is good information.
ADVANCED CYCLE TRACKING
If you want to get very advanced, it's possible to add tracking other physical signs (like your temperature and your cervical fluid) to put together a picture that tells you when you ovulate. This is called is obviously helpful if you're trying to either conceive or avoid conceiving. But it's also helpful if your cycles are always a bit irregular, because that's usually due to the ovulation date changing. If you suspect you may have PCOS, this is very useful information. (Remember, the "cysts" in PCOS are from eggs that fail to ovulate, which is what causes irregular periods).

I'm fully aware of the possible effects of BC lol. There's also more than one form/kind of BC and that's something I'd 100% research to determine the best one for me. Besides who knows it might even help with my cramps so 🤷🏾‍♀️
This is former bloody masturbation anon here to weigh in. BC saved me from severe depression. I had excessive bleeding and a period that would not end. A couple days after I took it my period ended. Then when I tried another bc it stopped my period completely (I take it continuously), and no more blood after masturbation. I get zero cramps or period symptoms. The most I’ve gotten is breast soreness around my usual period. I highly recommend the right pill for you! And it’s impermanent so if you want off, you just stop taking it. Anyways it depends on the person but I was legitimately su*cidal every period because the symptoms were so bad. So it does help some people! Especially if you take it for nonsexual related reasons
See this also! I have PMDD and while I've been trying to do what's recommended to make that easier, I genuinely wonder if BC will help too bc it's so scary and frustrating to be so suicidal like 1-1.5 weeks before your period comes on every month like clockwork
