late night thoughts
i've been thinking about philosophy a lot lately... but not as in the subject i study or anything. more as in what's the purpose of life?
i once thought it meant becoming very good at one thing and making it big. or having a passion and following it with all you had, going up the ladder. but now that i've been in the workforce for about a year, this all does not illusion me like it once had. i'm very disillusioned now. i'm maybe even suspicious if anyone ever talks to me about their dreams in life, their goals, their greatest ambitions and how they will do everything they can to reach them.
and i say this while being a part of the studyblr community lol (which basically promotes these ideas of dreams and passions).
why is there so much importance given to being successful? and what does that even mean? if you ask me, most of the time success is defined by someone else's terms.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5) Thoughts - Beginning At The End
No photos this time (I might add a few later). But I've got a lot of thoughts (and photos) about this game now that I'm finishing it up, but I just got finished my last sidequest in the postgame and I wanted to gush about it.
Spoilers, by the by. Quite a few of them.
----
The Mysteriums were a lopsided a pain the ass but man am I glad I saved this quest for last.
I've been thinking a lot about how much this game seeks to embody why Peter's beliefs in having empathy for the people he fights and getting to know who these villains are as people matters, and this quest - as well as Quentin Beck's final words to cap off the story - are such a perfect capper to that.
Nothing is as it seems, especially when you look at heroes and villains. Anything can change for anybody faster than you could ever realize it. When you take the masks off, it's all people making decisions. A good person can go down a dark path, a bad person can decide they no longer want to be that person any more. Not everyone is going to, but it's important to know that such a thing is always possible.
Heck, this game has an almost ''unprecedented'' number of reformed villains for a superhero franchise: Sandman, Mysterio, Tombstone, Mr. Negative, Prowler technically Lizard, all people who understand they did wrong and whose only motivation now is trying to make their way in the world going forward.
Jonah has a podcast early in the game where he insists that people never really change (about either Sandman or Lizard, iirc), advocating for criminals to be just kept in prison in perpetuity (which, I like this version of Jonah, but goddamn is he hard to like sometimes). Wraith advocates just killing these guys because naturally they're never going to change and they might as well be removed from the equation. And naturally, Symbiote Peter eventually starts considering the idea that maybe the best way forward is just to kill everybody who could be a threat.
But this game doesn't just counterpoint that by having its ultimate evolution be monstrous like most superhero works: instead, this game makes a strong point of why that mentality doesn't work - this is a fantasy story, but it's also a good point for real life.
Coming from a law family where I had a lot of interaction with formerly incarcerated people, and living in an inner city relationship where - again - anything can happen to skew a person's life in ways nobody thought they would go, it's not just a more realistic point - it's an essential point: people always change, and any belief otherwise is just an excuse not to examine the world around oneself. They can change for the worse, they can change for the better, or just kind of laterally shift, but they always change. A failure to recognize it is a failure of the self, not the other.
There's a strong trend of former villains in this game being taken advantage of by other villains, with the new villains doing so with the expectation that nobody will come to the former villains' aid, trust them, or aid them in any way (Mysterio's partners try to frame him, Tombstone and Negative get abducted by people who were sure no one would come for them, Sandman gets driven mad and dumped onto the city to be tossed into prison). And it's absolutely amazing to be Spider-Man in this game and be the one who fights tirelessly for everybody, even the people who have spurned their chances before, because that's who Spider-Man is.
Even if their stories still don't always end positively. Because it's still the right thing to do it, and it's a worse crime to stop.
Man, I love Spider-Man.
As a final note, I especially like that none of the former villains really expect to be forgiven and several never are. This might be the philosopher in me talking, but it's not in forgiveness that one finds redemption, but in the capacity of change in and of itself.

"Conversations Between Life and Death: Exploring the Meaning of Existence"
Death: Life! What's the meaning of living when you're eventually going to die?
Life: Death! What do you think about the concept of living?
Death: I don't think there is really any meaning in this thing you call living.
Life: Living doesn't have any meaning in itself; it's the process of finding that meaning before it meets your death.
Death: So, what do you find in this process?
Life: It all depends on the person living that life.
Death: That means each person who goes on living finds his own meaning of life, and that meaning is what helps it to go on living.
That doesn't make any sense.
First, they go on living to find the meaning of their life, and when they find it, they go on living again. Why? And what if they lose that meaning?
Life: As I said before, living is a process where you find the meaning of life, and that doesn't mean there is only one meaning. You can find different meanings as you go on living. You would lose some of them or gain many others.
It simply means people go on living to find the meaning their lives, and when they find it, they can see the worth of living, and when they don't, they live in hope of finding it someday.
Now that I have already answered your question, I will ask you again. What do you really think about living?
Death: I already answered that.
Life: I don't want an answer you don't believe in.
Death: Alright, I will tell you what I think. But I don't know if it is what I really think or not.
I think people go on living just to leave behind memories of how they spent their lives.
So the person they left behind can remember them. But memories can hurt you and heal you at the same time.
Why is that? Life.

"I think therfore I am" but this "I" must refer only to the "I" of the thoughts which think this statement and therfore the "I" of spoken work may refer only to the voice which speaks, and those lucky few who's voice and thoughts are of the same consciousness.
For 'me', whoever that may be, as I say "I" in these written words, it must refer only to the thoughts which think of writing and not the thoughts which think of thinking or of the voice which speaks and often does not do much thinking, only listening, to the many thoughts that tell it what to say.
'I' feel as tho 'I' am that which exists as the soul occupying this body, which is an "I" of its own though it does not have a voice or thoughts which any of 'my' "I's" can hear, only feel, as our brain sends those chemical communications.
I am that which can say "I think therfore I am" as I exists as the soul, but I am not the only thought in this body. This body with no voice. So why must I speak for it when I can not even speak for myself because I have no voice either? I can tell the voice what to say, just as I can tell the body what to do, but sometimes they do not listen, and sometimes I do not think myself, and therefore, I must not always be me.

I'm starting to realize something about mentorship...
Mentorship is about not merely wanting someone to be better than you--because it would imply that you don't have a chance or implying the lack of interest into knowing everything and that's honestly very limiting for you as a living person to say that. I'm seeing that the best approach is wanting someone to be their best selves. Having this mindset doesn't sound threatening nor belittling, in fact, it doesn't even involve you and it will never affect your own greatness. You are capable of being your own best version.

Sometimes I want a book where it makes me think and have an existential crisis. Other times I just want the characters to get railed, you know? It’s called balance.

It is, as they always say, the way of man...
But what is man's true nature, when humanity is ever evolving?

Can people change?
Yes they can. But a very few can actually successfully achieve it.
Change requires re-engineering of immensely deep rooted attitude and ethics. Changing them will mean violently shaking out of your prolonged and persistent comfortable zone. This is the part where your mind will fiercely revolt against any efforts made towards the conversion. Therefore, a strong stubbornness against your own mind is a necessary factor.
Now what about people who change for worse? This change appears to be a whole lot easier. This is because every person tries to find an easier way of life for everything, so when an opportunity presents itself (no matter regressive), that person is bound to hop on it.
