When you came to the apartment, you realised that most of your stuff was still packed into bags.
“Oh, brilliant! I’ll go put these by the elevator.” Natasha explained as she took the two main bags, leaving you with your duffle bag.
You quickly threw in the few bottles of suppressants before silencing them with the last of your clothes in the cupboard, making sure not to shake the bag too loudly as you found Natasha by the elevator.
“All packed? Let’s go.” She smiled at you, walking you back into the Tower.
The elevator ride was silent, save for the music, and you carefully put your bags into your room with your duffle bag going straight to the ensuite bathroom. Natasha left you for a moment to put away your things, even if you tried to do it agonisingly slowly.
Eventually, two hours had passed and you finally packed away the toiletries, using the sink drain pipe and the stacks of toilet paper to hide your suppressants. You also knew that it was a new day, so you popped one of the strong ones and cleaned your face.
*Why oh why did you agree to meet? You could have avoided everything about this for another month before dying, according to Bruce.* You thought to yourself.
*Death was mercy in this cruel world.*
You finally came out of your room to find Natasha, Wanda, Yelena and Kate chatting in the kitchen. You crept past silently but not without the scent of your Alphas hitting you, making your hindbrain melt.
“Hey, Y/N. Come have some dinner.” Wanda offered as the other girls ate up the delicious-looking meal.
“No thanks.”
“It wasn’t a question.”
You looked up sharply at the Alpha witch, her glowing eyes dragging a chair behind you before pushing you towards the counter. She placed a bowl in front of you before magicking the spoon into your hand, giving you a quaint but sharp look. “Eat up. We need to talk, too.”
You watched Yelena and Kate stack their empty dishes before heading to the lounge, turning on the TV to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The voices were quiet but you could still hear them if you focused and it was quiet around you.
“Y/N.”
Great, now the talking part.
“What?” You asked the redheaded Alpha, poking and prodding at your bowl.
“We need to introduce you to the rules.”
Natasha plucked the piece of paper off of the fridge before handing it to you, watching your eyes scan the top half of the page before giving it back.
“No.” She pushed it back towards you. “Read your own rules too.”
You had only skimmed through the rules of the Tower, the Alphas and the Betas, but now you know you had to properly read it:
Tower - No intentional hurt, physical or emotional - No ignoring, yelling or swearing - No power use to control - Traffic light system - No entering rooms w/o permission
Alphas - Deliver punishment - Respect Beta/Omega choice of punisher - Care above control - Stay close to Omega when out of Tower
Betas - Know when to interfere - Help Omegas where possible - Stop/Help Alphas were possible - Can follow any Omega rules if comfortable
Omegas - Look after yourself - Eat and Drink  - Bedtime rules (set by Alphas) - Do not leave Tower without an Alpha - Communication - Alert Alphas of drops/other problems - Accept punishment - Room = safe space
“I seem to have a lot more rules.” You commented annoyedly.
“You do because you are an Omega.” Natasha replied.
You slid the paper back over and she pinned it back on the fridge, with the two Alphas taking a seat on your sides.
“What?” You grumbled.
“Eat. As much as you can, nobody will force the whole bowl down your throat, but eat.” Wanda explained.
“I’m not hungry.” You retorted before you felt hands fall onto your waist.
“Hey!” You yelled as Natasha put you on her lap.
“Wanda?”
You looked at the witch, who took a spoonful of the dinner and held it in front of your lips. “Open.”
You shook your head and wriggled in Natasha’s lap. This wasn’t what you wanted. People touching you, forcing you to eat- you shut your eyes and pushed yourself out of Natasha’s arms.
“Y/N, come on-”
“Wait, Natasha.” Wanda cut her off, watching you sprint down to your room.
“I know that. Where do I know that?” The witch thought to herself.
She lightly brushed a finger over your mind to calm the pool, observing the memories that had been pushed to the front. She gasped, dropping the spoon into the bowl before she came to your closed door.
“Y/N, Y/N, please, I’m sorry. We didn’t know you were in HYDRA too.” She knocked fervently on the door.
“G-Go away!” You barked through.
“What’s happening?” Natasha asked her mate.
“In HYDRA, when somebody didn’t eat for a few days and HYDRA wanted to keep them… they would force them to eat.”
“What?”
“Tie us down, feed us by hand. It was a manipulation tactic, to get you to listen to at least one person regularly and form a bond. Then, they would abuse that bond until it was broken. Repeat the process until you don't trust anyone to feed you but yourself.”
Wanda turned back to the door. “‘Mega, please let us in… we can help.”
“I’m not just a fucking Omega!” You howled through the door.
The two of them sighed in defeat. “I’m sorry, malen’kiy. We didn’t know.”
“That’s the problem. You don’t bother to get to know.” You grumbled to yourself, but she heard it.
“Come on, let’s give her some space.” Natasha cooed, taking her mate into their room for some quality time.
Tumblr media
When you woke, you were still in a heap on the floor. The room was slowly darkening by the setting sun and you stood up, feeling utterly wrecked to the bone. You shuffled out of your room, not paying attention to anyone as you grabbed some water from the fridge.
“Y/N-”
“Don’t talk to me.” You clipped Wanda’s words off quickly.
“We need to talk about more rules, specifically bedtime since it’s almost upon us.” She continued.
You huffed, rolling your eyes. You were twenty-four, not a baby - you didn’t need a bedtime. “Why?”
“Because it’s a rule.” Natasha added, folding her arms as she came into your view.
“Come on. Come sit.”
You eyed the empty chair between the two Alphas and you shook your head. “I’ll stand, thanks.”
Neither of them reacted. “Okay. First off: Do you have a job?”
“I’m a waitress and bartender at Danny’s Diner, remember? Where you first decided to have me?” You replied, watching Natasha taking notes as Wanda asked questions.
“When do you normally work?”
“Any shift I can get. Typically night, early morning. Rarely during the day.” Your answers came with a short clip at the end, showing the Alphas that this was not a favourable discussion.
“What’s your boss’ name?”
“I have Sophie as my manager and then the owner, Danny. His wife, Alura, does the shift management.”
“Can we speak to her?”
“Why?”
Natasha lifted her head from the paper and laced her fingers together. “We want to have a schedule that aligns with your bedtime. Probably four or five days of the week, you’ll be in bed by 10:30.”
You let a huff of air out through your nose. “That’s ridiculous. I’m not a child.”
“That’s why we’re giving you the option of four days.” Wanda retorted, raising an eyebrow at you.
You growled out deeply. “Fine. What else?”
Natasha chuckled. “You get to choose if you want to sleep in our room or yours. We’ll go out tomorrow and buy some more clothes, things for a nest, et cetera. We can even split up so that Wanda goes shopping with you while I go talk to your bosses.”
“Good. I don’t want to see Danny’s eyes when he finds out I can’t work like a normal person anymore.” You mumbled, trying to remove yourself from the uncomfortable situation.
“Okay. Now, for punishment, I take it you don’t want physical touch like spanking?” The Widow continued.
“No.” You shook your head, the only time this conversation didn’t have a snarky remark from you.
“Alright. How about physical exertion? Standing on your head in the corner, planking, balancing books on your head?”
You raised an eyebrow. “That’s a punishment?”
“Yes. We will push you until we deem the punishment over or that you can no longer carry on.” Wanda clarified.
You nodded, comforted by the familiarity of your training. “Okay. What else?”
Natasha glanced at the rules on the fridge before looking down at her notes. “Ah, yes. ‘Drops/other problems’. Who do you want when you drop?”
You thought about it for a moment, making sure to hide your thoughts in case Wanda wanted to look. You hadn’t dropped since you learned how to control it, no thanks to HYDRA and the Red Room. You would get a slight fuzz in your head but that was all, which didn’t help when making this decision.
“Can we wait on that one?” You asked, receiving nods from them both.
“Of course.”
You nodded and felt awkward just standing there with a cup of water in your hands, watching Natasha pack up her notes whilst Wanda looked over to you. “Do you want to come and watch a movie?”
You nodded and followed Wanda to the lounge area, watching her take her place. You knew you shouldn’t have hesitated to sit on the couch, because the three pairs of eyes on you looked worried.
“Y/N, you don’t have to sit on the floor unless you want to.” Kate spoke, pulling out a pillow for you to sit on.
“I’m not sitting on the floor like a mutt.” You growled, choosing to sit in the end corner of the couch.
“Okay.” The archer took the pillow back and cuddled up to Yelena, something you watched closely.
Wanda observed your watching eyes before she patted the spot next to her, giving you a welcome smile. You scowled at the patting motion, choosing to stick to your corner, even if you were a little bit cold.
Then, Natasha came back. She sat down next to Wanda, with a space to fit another person and a half between you and her. “Y/N, come over here so we can share the blanket.”
“No thanks, I’m good.” You replied monotonously.
You watched the movie about amazing black women sending astronauts into space whilst fighting for rights; that was, until, an alarm went off and Natasha pulled out her phone.
You despised the alarm’s name - Omega bedtime.
“I’m not just a stupid Omega.” You growled, storming out of the room and slamming your door shut.
Wanda grabbed the phone from Natasha and stopped the alarm from ringing, glancing at her mate. “Change it.”
Natasha quickly changed it to Y/N bedtime before making her way to your door. “Can I come in?”
“No.” You answered, slightly muffled from both the door and your pillow.
Natasha sighed, placing her head against the door. “I’m sorry, love. I should have known better.”
“Mhm.” You answered.
“You’re not a prize to be won. You’re a charm to be treasured.” She added.
“Goodnight, sweetness.”
You didn’t say it back.
Tumblr media
When the morning came, you made your way to the kitchen to see Wanda already cooking.
“Hi, Y/N. Want some breakfast?” She handed over a plate of fried eggs on toast with cutlery.
“Thank you.” You murmured sleepily, watching as Wanda poured you some water.
You ate half of the breakfast before Wanda noticed how you didn’t want any more, coming over and giving you a gentle touch along your back. “Good job, Y/N. That was a lot, I shouldn’t have plated so much, sorry.”
“It’s okay.” You replied, going back to your room to change only to bump into Natasha.
“Sorry, love. How are you feeling? Had some breakfast, I see.” She pointed at the egg that had dripped down onto your shirt.
“Yep.” You clipped.
“We’ll be leaving in about an hour, okay?”
You nodded and closed your door, leaving Natasha to be with her sister and mate. You popped a strong suppressant before getting changed into your outfit of jeans, shirt and hoodie. You left your room with your shoes in hand, tying them by the elevator as you waited for the two Alphas.
They eventually came out wearing simple civilian clothes like yours, but they frowned at the sight of the hoodie. “Y/N, it’s going to be warm today. Are you sure you want the hoodie?”
You nodded, knowing that your body struggled even on a hot day. Whilst walking with them through the carpark, conveniently next to a train station and Danny’s Diner, you noticed how some Omegas acted with their Alphas. Some had collars on, some were leashed, others were like you and free.
“Do you want us to find you a collar while we shop, baby?” Wanda asked and you growled.
“No collars.”
She nodded and kissed your forehead before those lips transferred to Natasha, bidding her goodbye as she walked towards the diner. Wanda took your hand and pulled you into stores and you noticed that some of them didn’t even question your status as Wanda led you around.
After two trips to the car, you and Wanda went to lunch. You both found a table, with the witch determined not to let you out of her sight, and she watched you eat slowly.
“So, Y/N, I was wondering if you would consider something for me and Nat.” Wanda asked, waiting for you to swallow your chips.
“What about?”
“Could you cuddle with us tonight? Natasha’s been feeling antsy and I don’t have the right pheromones to calm her like you do.”
You looked down at your meal and put your hands in your lap, taking a few deep breaths. “I’m… I’m not great with touch.”
“Is it because of HYDRA? And the Red Room?” She offered, watching you nod.
“It’s not appropriate here, but I have some… less than admirable markings across my body.”
Wanda’s eyes turned to steel as she looked at you. “What kind of marks?”
“Um…”
Wanda put a hand on top of yours and you stopped talking. “You don’t have to say if you’re not comfortable.” She reassured you.
You nodded. “Thank you.”
“You’re always welcome, love.”
When you saw Natasha walking towards you both, you shifted in your seat and a small scowl came onto your lips. She was beaming, pride wafting from her, and you huffed. “What are you so happy about?”
“Danny says he’s more than happy to let you work afternoon shifts, from about 2 until 7:30.” She smiled.
You huffed out slowly. “Great.”
She looked at you and sighed, your eyes not meeting hers. “Will you please look at me?”
“Not unless you use my name.”
“Y/N, please look at me.”
You lifted your head and with an annoyed sigh, opened your eyes slowly. “What?”
“Why are you making this difficult?”
“I liked my life how it was before, so excuse me for trying to keep it that way as much as possible.”
Wanda took your hand and when Natasha tried to take yours, she was met with a hostile growl before you removed your hand from the table. The alpha was done, and you could smell it on her.
“We’re going home. Now.”
Wanda helped you pack up the last of your things, including taking some leftovers, before she guided you into the back of the car. You fidgeted in your seat as your omega brain began to get stressed, your mind getting fuzzy as Natasha kept looking back at you.
“Natasha, you’re scaring her. Stop it, right now.” Wanda scolded.
“I am not! I’m being an Alpha.” She retorted, albeit reining in her scent a bit.
Wanda looked at you in the rearview mirror and saw how unhappy you were. You were her Omega, one of the two most important things in her life, and you were unhappy.
“Malysh, would opening the window help you?” She offered as she turned the corner.
“Mhm.” You muttered.
She opened the window a little bit, no more than halfway, but she saw how it calmed you. She even released a few calming pheromones to combat Natasha’s frustration and you pulled the window up higher of your own volition.
“How much further?” You asked quietly.
“Not too far. A few more minutes.” She smiled at you.
Meanwhile, Natasha was frustrated as the emotion in her heart was new. Why did you like Wanda but not her? She acted the same, she gave you the same options, but why did you like her more?
She was jealous, and even you could tell that much.
When Wanda pulled into the garage of Avengers Tower, you already saw a few of the Avengers waiting to help unpack the car. A few new faces were there, most having some scrapes, but they still helped where they could.
“Miss Romana, a meeting will be held in five minutes to introduce you to the Avengers you did not meet beforehand.” FRIDAY spoke above you in your quiet room.
“Thank you for telling me, FRIDAY.” You replied, laying out a blanket on the end of your bed.
You entered the bathroom and noticed how the graze along your cheek was almost healed, whilst your arms were still a bit scuffed. You replaced the bandages on them and threw a hoodie over the top before following FRIDAY’s directions to the penthouse.
When you stepped out, the foreign area put you on alert until you saw Wanda and inevitably, Natasha. You don’t know why you weren’t as comfortable with her as you were with Wanda, and for some reason, you thought you should be more comfortable since the Widow had gone through similar things to you.
“Ah, Y/N, you’re here. Let’s get started.” Steve gathered everyone, some with drinks in hand made by Tony at the bar.
“Would you like a drink?” Wanda offered and you shook your head.
“I’ll get you some water then.”
You took the glass into your hand before nodding to Steve to start the conversation. “This is pretty much everyone you’ll meet, Y/N, but you already know everyone that lives here. These guys have their own places outside of the Tower, or rarely come by enough to have a room.”
“Okay.” You shrugged, hearing a few chuckles.
“Feisty Omega.” The blonde woman, another Alpha by her scent, snickered.
Natasha growled. “Carol, watch it.”
“She’s cute, too. Anybody claimed her yet?”
Natasha snapped at her, with Wanda pushing you behind her and taking Natasha’s wrist. “Not yet, but she holds our marks. Careful, Danvers. Natasha is not in the mood for your antics.”
You wriggled out of Wanda’s grip and stood to her side, shooting her a glare before you nodded to Steve to continue.
“You already met Peter, but he thought he’d come and say hi.”
“H-Hi, Miss Y/N.” He waved at you, the young Beta’s pheromones reeking of nerves.
“You almost smell like an Omega.” You smiled at him.
“I have anxiety.”
You nodded sympathetically. “I know all about that, don’t you worry.”
“This is Rhodey, Tony’s best friend.” Steve gestured to him.
“I’m a Beta soldier.”
You nodded softly, respecting his status and service.
“Then there’s Scott, Sam and Bucky. Sam and Bucky are mated, whilst Scott’s girlfriend is the only pairing so far in the Avengers that’s opposing primary sexes.”
“Hi. Beta with an Alpha girlfriend. You seem very nice.” He shook your hand, his smile almost fatherly.
“I’m Y/N, as you know. Y/N Romana.”
“Let me guess - Romanian?” He chuckled, making you do the same.
“Just a little bit.”
Natasha and Wanda both felt jealousy rise. You were with Scott for what, five seconds, and you’d already told him more personal things than either of them knew. Natasha took your hand and let you stand in-between them.
“Can we see your marks?” Sam asked and you nodded, spinning around.
But Natasha didn’t let go of your hand, making you huff and wrench it out with a whispered ‘ow’. You parted the hood away whilst lifting your hair up, showing off the three marks.
“And proof?” Bucky questioned, to which Wanda stepped forward and moved her shirt collar over.
“Nat?” Steve gestured for her turn and she lifted her pant leg, showcasing the marks by her ankle.
“Good. Now, I hope that you all understand that those marks means Y/N is off-limits, unless she asks you specifically for help with a drop or to take her out of the Tower.”
They all nodded, with Wanda bringing you back to her side, and you looked over at Natasha. Soon, a meeting was held by the Alphas and you were left outside with Scott, Rhodey and Bucky who were all Betas.
“So how come you smell like a Beta, Y/N?” Scott asked as he bit into a small sandwich.
“Oh, I don’t know, actually. If you’d like…” You pulled up your sleeve whilst calming your heart rate, undoing a bit of the bandage to reveal your healing wound.
“Does that help?”
They all leaned towards you and sniffed the air. “Oh yeah, that’s an Omega.” Rhodey commented, making you all chuckle.
“I just… I must have practised a lot with hiding my scent that I smell different when my blood’s not exposed.” You shrugged.
“Well you seem like a lovely person to be around, Omega or not.” Bucky smiled, patting your shoulder.
“Whoa! A metal arm?!” You exclaimed and he chuckled, taking off his jacket to reveal the black and gold design.
“It used to be made out of titanium, but our friend T’Challa built me a better one.” He grinned, flexing his fingers slightly in your grip.
“Whoa.” You chuckled, tracing the different grooves of the arm up until his elbow, to which you were pulled up by Natasha’s strong arm.
“No touching, Barnes.” She scowled and you pulled your arm out of her grip.
“It’s fine, Natasha. If anything, I’m the one touching him. Sorry I didn’t ask, Sam.” You apologised, but he shook his head.
“It’s okay, he likes the attention.”
Bucky rolled his eyes but when they came to Natasha, he lowered his eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t ask if I could touch Y/N, Natasha.”
“You better be.” Natasha stepped towards him but you pulled her back, to which she spun around and growled at you.
A slap echoed in the room, with Natasha’s jaw clenching as her skin stung.
“Don’t you ever try and Alpha command me again.” You snarled, pointing a daring finger in her face that she had an idea of biting.
“I am your Alpha!”
“And I’m a fucking person!”
“Y/N…” Steve warned you, your mind drifting to the rules.
“Sorry, Head Alpha.”
He was surprised when you addressed him by his proper title, to which he let the foul slide. “Natasha, Y/N, Wanda - return to your level and talk this out.” He commanded, but you felt no power over you.
You stepped into the elevator and waited for FRIDAY to control it, keeping your cool as Wanda and Natasha came too. Wanda stood next to you whilst Natasha leaned against the wall, staring at you.
“How are you able to resist an Alpha command?” She questioned.
“Red Room. Resist the command or die.” You replied shortly.
“That’s not what I remember.”
“You’re an Alpha - of course you don’t remember, because it didn’t happen to you. It wasn’t a part of your training program.”
Wanda took your hand and kissed it gently, brushing her thumb over your skin like she was smoothing out a pebble.
“Stop trying to be a kiss-up, Wanda.” Natasha growled.
“I’m not. I’m respecting my mate, just as you should be doing.” Wanda shot back, her eyes glowing.
Natasha stood up as the elevator slowed, standing next to you. “Don’t think we forgot about your swearing, Omega.”
“Steve let it slide.” You stated, but she shook her head.
“Steve is not your Alpha. I am. Your punishment is ten spankings.”
“Y-You said no spanking.” You stammered, suddenly feeling very small as the Alpha’s scent overwhelmed your systems.
“Do you want ten more?”
“Natasha, enough!” Wanda threw her out of the elevator just as the doors opened, letting her skid along the ground before she hit a chair.
“Y/N, go to your room. I’ll be there soon if you’ll allow me inside.”
You scurried past and shut the door, leaving the Alphas to ‘talk’ it out. “Natasha Romanoff, I don’t know what has gotten into you lately, but this is the most restless I’ve seen you! You need to either dial it down or I will knock you down a few pegs, got it?”
Natasha took a few deep breaths before she stood, looking at your door. “Why can’t I do anything right?”
“Start by treating her like a person instead of an Omega.” Wanda snapped, coming to knock on your door.
You opened it and she saw how downcast your expression was. “Look at me, Y/N.” She murmured, waiting for your eyes to meet hers.
“May I come in?”
You nodded, taking her hand and shutting the door before you led her onto your bed and lay down. She didn’t make any advances to be nearer, but she did watch you closely as you fidgeted.
“I want to go home.”
“I’m sorry, frumoasă, but you can’t go home. You have to stay here.” She sighed, gently running her knuckle up and down your unmarred cheek.
She watched as a few tears sprung forth and you curled yourself into a ball, your sad pheromones ringing alarm bells in Wanda’s head. “Y/N, can I hug you?”
You nodded and she slowly enveloped you in her warmth, the scent of cinnamon and apples making you calm slightly. Your head became fuzzier and your vision blurred, but it soon refocused as you looked up at Wanda.
“I’m… I’m gonna…”
“You’re gonna drop?” She asked gently and you nodded.
“I haven’t dropped in a while.”
She kissed the crown of your forehead gently. “I’ll keep you safe, Y/N. No harm will come to you as long as I am here.”
You slowly closed your eyes and although every instinct in you said not to, you let go. Wanda felt your release as a sinking of your weight into the mattress, making her smile gently as she continued to pamper you with kisses, a hand running up and down your spine, a blanket slowly peeling over you.
“Good, love. Would you like to sleep?” She offered and you nodded slowly.
“Isokay? No mad?” You slurred.
“Not mad. It’s okay.” She confirmed, feeling your breathing slow until it evened out into slumber.
Tumblr media
When you woke, you felt the most refreshed you’d ever felt in your life, like that sleep was the only true sleep you’d ever had. In a way, it was, as having no reason to be on your guard was astoundingly good for your mind.
You sat up groggily before a knock came to your door, the sight of Wanda making you smile. The long shirt covered most of her torso, leaving the bottom of her silk shorts to poke out. “Morning. Can I come in?” She asked, to which you nodded.
“I wanted to talk to you about Nat.”
Your eyes opened properly after a few blinks. “What about her?”
“She wants to talk to you. Spend time with you and you alone. She wants to know Y/N, not her Omega.”
“I thought they were one and the same.” You chuckled, but Wanda saw the dejection behind your eyes.
“I can’t deny the fact that I love that you’re an Omega. But I also know that it doesn’t define you. You’re strong, independent, caring, witty, just to name a few.”
You blushed at her description. “Thanks, Wanda.”
She leaned in and kissed your cheek gently. “Will you give Nat a chance? Please?”
You took a deep sigh and nodded. “One chance. If she blows it, she blows it. No Omega for her.”
She smiled. “Carol was right, in a way. You’re so feisty, it’s cute.”
You playfully growled at her and she giggled, biting her bottom lip before she stood. “Come on. Yelena and Kate are making pancakes for breakfast.”
You yawned and walked with her, hand in hand, and smiled at the Alpha-Beta pair that beamed at you.
“Y/N! Do you want a pancake?!” Kate offered over the music, which Wanda turned down with her magic.
“Sorry. Do you want one?” She asked again at a normal volume.
“Yes please.” You smiled, looking down at the delicious spreads.
You shuffled onto a chair and thanked Kate for the pancake as it flopped down in front of you. You watched Wanda’s magic bring over the Nutella, to which you almost grabbed from her, but her magic manipulated a knife to spread it evenly over the pancake.
“I wanted to do that.” You whined playfully, rolling it up before eating it like a burrito.
“I’m just trying to practise my powers, love.” She chuckled, sitting down next to you.
“You may drown the pancake in Nutella for your next one.”
You munched on them slowly before you objected to a third, but you could tell that your stomach was expanding as you never would have thought you could eat this much a week ago. You were laughing along with Kate and Yelena as they dotted on one another, the noirette Alpha taking care of her Beta, whilst Wanda observed you.
You watched as Kate fed Yelena a bite of pancake-wrapped banana and a feeling grumbled in your heart. You wanted that, to be dotted on and loved so carelessly. You wanted to feel as safe as you did last night, to be at peace like that, and you wanted it with Wanda and Natasha.
Then it dawned on you.
*Shit!* You looked towards your bedroom before making an excuse to freshen up, quickly scurrying into your ensuite at the sight of a shocked Natasha.
A bottle of strong suppressant pills in her hand.
“Y/N, what…?” Her heart broke, and yours raced.
“Natasha, it’s not what it looks like.”
“It’s not? So these aren’t Omega suppressants? Ones that could kill you?” She growled, but noticed how the room stank of fear.
Wanda, Yelena and Kate came rushing into the room, the witch with her magic whilst Yelena held two spatulas and Kate held the hot frying pan.
“Y/N, get back!” Yelena yelled, ready to attack whoever was in the bathroom.
You scrambled into the corner of the room, eyeing your cupboard before you clambered into that and held it shut. Voices were muffled, gasps of shock too, but it was clear what you had done and you knew you would be a goner.
“Malen’kiy, can you open the cupboard door, please?” Wanda’s soothing voice was clearer as she knocked on it.
“No, no, no, no, no… Gonna punish me, gonna whip me… bad Omega, bad bad Omega…”
Wanda pulled the door open by your muttering to see you in an out-of-body state, rocking back and forth on top of a pile of dirty laundry. She knelt down in front of you and tried to grasp your attention, but was struggling with the two other Alphas, one with fear and one with shock.
“Everybody just calm down.” Wanda cooed, mostly to you.
“Bad bad Omega… got caught, gonna whip me…” You kept muttering, only to flinch wildly at Wanda’s touch.
“Shh, Y/N, I’m not going to hurt you.” She tried to calm you but still failed.
“Natasha, get your butt over here.”
The Widow knelt down in front of you and her heart shattered at the sight of your fear-stricken form. Your entire body was shaking while you rocked back and forth, your voice sounding like a broken record.
“Dom her.” Yelena spoke.
“Sestra, stay out of this.” Natasha growled.
“I promise, dom her. She needs to know she’s safe, and it’s not going to do much to just tell her. Dom her, overflow her senses with your pheromones. Trust me, it works.”
Wanda and Natasha looked at each other before looking at you, their fingers lacing together just as their minds did. Yelena and Kate left, closing the door behind them, and that’s when Natasha and Wanda decided to scent the entire room.
As soon as it hit you, your body stilled. No more rocking, a little bit of shaking, but a whimper came out of your lungs.
“Omega, your Alphas are here. Come and sit here.” Natasha pointed at her lap.
She watched as your eyes seemed foggy as your sluggish movements guided you into her lap, sitting just like a cradled baby would. Natasha held your torso and Wanda came to her side, running her fingers through your hair as you continued to whimper.
“Gonna whip me, gonna hurt me… M’sorry, Alphas…”
Wanda shushed you gently. “No, Omega. No whipping. Punishment, yes, but no harm like that will come to you by our hands.”
You curled further into Natasha, burying your head in her neck to breathe in every possible scent of hers you could. Wanda watched Natasha relax, a calm expression built upon her face whilst realisation hit the witch.
“This is what you needed, my love. You needed to dom her.”
“I guess so. I feel very relaxed.” The Widow commented.
“It’s her.” Wanda smiled as you stopped shaking. “Can’t you smell it? She reeks of calming scents.”
Natasha gently tilted your head to the side and smelled your scent glands, the addictive and sweet scent of honey filling her lungs. A purr exuded from her chest and it calmed you to the point of near-sleep, your head lulling back into Wanda’s hands.
“Okay, bring her out slowly.” Wanda guided as she pulled her own pheromones back in.
Natasha didn’t want to, though. You were finally calm, compliant, a true Omega. But she trusted her mate and pulled back her pheromones, only keeping the ones that essentially blocked off your fear.
“Hmm… Natasha? Wanda?” You muttered, looking around the room.
“Hi, darling. How are you feeling?” Natasha murmured.
“I’ve never… I mean I have, but only in the Red Room.” You stammered.
“That was a really, really bad stress-drop, Y/N.” Wanda explained, helping you move to the bed.
“I feel so drained, but so energised.” You looked down at your body to see a sheen of sweat covering it.
“Y/N, can you tell us where all of your suppressants are, please?” The witch tucked a hair behind your ear.
You froze. That’s why you dropped, now you remember. Natasha found them and you tried to hide from her. “Are… Are you mad at me?”
“Not anymore, my love.” Natasha shook her head, kissing your temple.
“Um… okay, please don’t get mad.”
You shifted throughout your room and grabbed every bottle and loose pill before placing them on the bed. Natasha and Wanda’s heart sank as a few tears shed down your cheeks, sniffles accompanying them until you stood empty-handed in front of the duo.
“Th-That’s everything, I promise.”
Wanda stood up and hugged you tightly, something of which you never thought would happen. You hugged her back just as tightly before you started sobbing, your legs failing you but she brought you to the bed.
“Ple-hease, I was g-going to wean off of them, I promise. Please don’t b-be mad, I’ll be a g-good ‘Mega. I-I’ll wear a collar, I’ll t-take the spankings, I’ll kneel out-outside.”
“Shh, little ‘mega.” Natasha cooed.
“You won’t be punished for this, Y/N. We were going to, but not anymore.”
“W-Why?” You sniffled as Wanda pulled away, cleaning up your cheeks with her thumbs.
“Because you gave us everything else. If we just got angry at finding that one bottle, then you would have hidden the rest from us and stayed on death row. We could not be more proud or happier that you decided to be honest with us.” She explained.
You let out a shuddering exhale of relief, with feelings rising up in you that you hadn’t felt in a long time.
“And did you really mean those things? You’d have worn a collar and knelt in public because you thought we were mad?” Natasha asked gently.
You nodded. “Other Alphas did it. I-It’s why I didn’t want a collar at the shops.”
Natasha and Wanda steeled up slightly. “Baby, you’ve been handled by other Alphas?”
You nodded again before looking at Natasha, realisation dawning on her. “Of course. The lease program.”
“What?” Wanda looked between you two.
“It’s where the few Omegas in the Red Room were leased out to the highest bidder for 24 hours, with no law standing in-between them.”
Natasha wrapped you in a tight hug. “I’m so sorry I’ve been ignorant. I’ll be a better Alpha than those pigs, I promise.”
You nuzzled into her slightly. “Don’ wanna go back there.”
She shook her head as she let go a bit. “Never. Never in a million years will you ever have to go back there.”
You relaxed into her grip and felt an overwhelming urge to kiss her. You leaned forward and captured her lips in yours, leaving it after three seconds to be just a simple kiss.
“My… My Alpha.” You murmured.
A stronger-than-steel purr ripped through her chest as her pupils dilated. “What did you just say?”
You blushed deeply before taking Wanda’s hand, pulling her in for a kiss too. You sighed relaxingly and pulled the two impossibly closer, almost to the point that they could kiss over your shoulder.
“My Alphas.”

🌼 summary: going back to the countryside where you grew up was at the bottom of your list. unexpectedly, your life changes course, and you eventually find your home in weekly village cleaning, the sound of the waves, and with the local jack-of-all-trades, jeon wonwoo.
🌼 feat: wonwoo x reader fic (written, fluff, angst, hometown chachacha!inspired)
🌼word count: ~1.9k

The words in the letter surprise you. In some ways, it gives you mixed feelings.
Happy, of course, that you’d gotten the job, signed the contract and you could move on from the clinic you’d dedicated over six years to after getting your degree to a larger hospital. It meant a change of pace, change in the people around you, and a step upward in your career.
Sad, that you couldn’t start immediately.
The letter announced the start of your contract to be in three months. But you were already packed up from your previous clinic and ready to move out.
Sitting back on your couch, you scan the letter again. “Commencement of the job will be three months from the date on the letter. Please contact us in the case of any confusion.” You sigh and toss the letter aside, leaning your head back.
Three months. Three months to do anything you wanted. Go on a long-needed vacation, binge-watch all the seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, buy a whole supermarket’s worth of ice cream.. the possibilities were endless.
As you were in your reverie of much-anticipated relaxation, your phone rings.
You pick up, and your uncle’s voice rings out in a cheerful baritone, loud and joyful.
“Y/N!”
“Hi, Uncle.”
“Oh, I haven’t heard from you in a while, dear. How’s everything?”
“Good,” you say, a little awkwardly. “I got a new job.”
“Goodness! How wonderful.” Your uncle seems positively delighted. You clear your throat, and ask quietly, “Why'd you call? Is everything okay?”
“Definitely! We were just calling to ask if you were going back to the countryside this year.” Your uncle says. You freeze slightly. “I know it’s hard with how busy you are. But it’s good to have a break before you continue running off everywhere, you know?”
“But you aren’t living in the countryside anymore, Uncle,” you remind him. “I don’t have anyone to visit.”
“I know,” your uncle says, sighing. “Part of me wishes we stayed, but… oh well. That’s life. You have to move on from something.”
You stay quiet.
“But enough about us! Maybe try to go back at least once.” Your uncle says again. “Eat well, have a good rest… some sea air would be great for you. Call me if you need anything.”
“I will, Uncle. You too. Send my love to Aunt.”
With a cheery farewell, the call ends. You take a deep breath and try to recall the last time you went home to the countryside for a short visit three years ago.
Your aunt’s fragrant chicken soup. Your uncle’s over-interest in your knowledge about a shoe brand he liked. Your cousin’s feeble attempts to get freebies from when you did a checkup on the child of the owner of a popular makeup brand. Laughter, togetherness, the feeling of finally having someone to come home to.
But there would be no internet, no socialising. No fine dining, no external staff for the cleaning and dirty work you didn’t like. No polished floors, air conditioning wherever you went.
It was a win-lose.
Yet the feeling of not going back irked you, an emotion you couldn't place.
Five minutes. Ten minutes as you considered your situation.
Three months to do whatever you liked.
After a power struggle with your mind, you sat up, inhaling deeply and then letting it go. A day trip. You could spare a day trip visiting your old home, before you came back to reality, where you should be, instead of reminiscing on memories long past.
You were going home, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine would have to wait.
───✱.。:。✱.:。✧.。✰──────✱.。:。✱.:。✧*.。✰ ───
You hate it here.
Your heels dig into the rough gravel as you step out of your car. A bad choice to wear Louboutins, you surmise, as you reach into the backseat for your bag.
You had decided to go to the beach, before maybe grabbing a bite at a cafe, taking some pictures in a weak attempt to relive your childhood memories, before the one-hour-fifteen-minute drive home. It wasn't as if you were here to visit anyone, you reasoned to yourself as you picked your way through the old country road you remembered all too well -- there was absolutely no need to stay any longer than you had to.
Besides, after the abrupt death of your parents in a car accident midway through your diploma, you had sworn to leave the moment you could, the memories of two people who would never return sitting heavily on you.
And that was what you had done, a mere two months after receiving a full university scholarship. You had left and never looked back since.
Nostalgia rushes through you as you find a less sandy and hot spot and sit down, careful not to get any sand into your precious heels. The beach is mostly empty, save for a few people swimming, surfing, or having a family day out. Your gaze goes out to sea, hugging your legs to yourself.
You silently hype yourself up. No more sad memories. You didn't have time for that. You would take this chance to wallow for a bit, and then you would look forward. Better things were coming for you.
A full thirty minutes pass before you feel yourself about to combust. You get up, wincing at the roughness of the sand on your hands. As a kid, you loved the beach. But it was different now. You were a grown-up, and grown-ups don't soak in self-pity. Or sand.
You struggle back on to solid land, deciding to get a quick coffee at a small cafe before leaving. As you approach a store with the large sign reading 'Hwang's Coffee Corner', you reach for the aged, wooden door and pull it open.
The cafe smells not of coffee, but of a soft, vanilla-like aroma from a scented candle nearby. A middle-aged woman sitting at the counter humming to trot music looks up. Your instincts, long honed by long rides on lifts and shopping trips, force an up-down look at her as she stands to welcome you. Thick, curly, and unstyled hair held back with a purple headband, too-pink lipstick, an old blue dress, worn-out sandals.
You force yourself to ignore the judgmental comment at the tip of your tongue and grit out a barely-there hello. The woman smiles, big and unrestricted, introduces herself as Ms Hwang, the owner, and asks for your order.
"Just a latte, please."
"Got that!" Ms Hwang chirps, and you cringe at how loud her voice is, ringing in the silence of the cafe.
You fish in your bag for your wallet, deciding to just get a takeaway cup instead, and you pull out your credit card.
Ms Hwang shakes her head, "We only take cash."
Your face burns as you look back up at the woman. "Um..sorry. I don't have cash on me."
Her eyebrows shoot up. "What?"
"I only have credit cards."
"Oh. Well, it won't be of much use. The card machine hasn't been working for a while anyway, we only take cash." Ms Hwang's tone is slightly dismissive, as she taps away on the cashier screen.
Your face drops. What place doesn't take credit cards now?
Turns out the question was said out loud and not in your head. Ms Hwang looks up, eyes slightly wide at the intrusive question.
"What are you trying to say?" Her voice isn't that of the friendly lady-next-door anymore and has a sharpness to it. You sigh in mild irritation and reply. "Forget it. I'll try to get cash first."
"No, you won't! Explain what you meant. Are you trying to say this store is outdated?" The woman seems to be getting agitated, and you really don't want to have a conflict in the middle of this god-forsaken town right now.
"No, I-"
"Oh, Wonwoo!" The angry owner suddenly exclaims to someone who just entered the cafe, the bell above the door announcing their arrival. "Help me over here! This lady thinks the cafe is outdated just because she doesn't have cash and can't pay!"
You roll your eyes and turn around, ready to defend your case to the next person who is clearly going to take her side after her accusation.
Everything you were going to say flies right out of the window when you see him.
Clean-cut, damp, dark brown hair, strong and defined eyebrows that are currently raised at the unfolding situation, and deep-set eyes. Dressed in a simple flannel outerwear with a T-shirt and jeans, glasses perched on his sharp nose bridge, he looks every bit like a local heartthrob. You subconsciously recall your outfit.
But this heartthrob is currently striding in behind the counter, next to Ms Hwang, and raising his eyebrows at you in mild disapproval.
"You really shouldn't have said that." His voice is deep and rich. You snap yourself back to the present moment, and begin to protest hotly. "I said nothing of the sort! I only hold cards in my wallet, and she said that cards wouldn't work since the machine was broken. And that's strange, isn't it? Every place takes cards now-"
"Strange?" The man- Wonwoo, you remember, interrupts, head tilting in curiousity as he surveys you. "Strange how?"
You huff impatiently. Seriously, does no one here know the wonders of credit card transactions?
"Go to any shop in the city. I'll bet you anything they take cards-"
"This isn't the city, miss," he shrugs. "Most stores here usually take cash. And you should probably be carrying cash around with you anyway."
You sigh, massaging your temples. "Look, this is getting more complicated than it has to be, alright? I'll get some cash first, and-"
"How do I know you're not a swindler?" Ms Hwang cuts in, narrowing her eyebrows.
You sigh. She's not easy, that much you've figured out. You didn't even get the coffee, and she's already making a big fuss.
"I can leave my bag with you while I'm at it." You shrug the handbag off your shoulder, wincing internally when your beloved Marc Jacobs lands on the aged wooden counter. Ms Hwang immediately descends upon it, glaring at you.
"All this for a coffee?" Wonwoo asks, bemused, as he runs his hands through his hair.
"I'm proving that I'm not a con job, mister." You glare at him. "I don't even need the coffee, forget it!"
He shrugs, half-amused by your outburst. "Okay then, Miss Not-Con-Job. Hope you get the cash."
───✱.。:。✱.:。✧.。✰──────✱.。:。✱.:。✧*.。✰ ───
The waves are large today, Wonwoo muses as he hoists his surfing board out to the water and mounts it, careful to tuck his glasses away. Before long, he's soaring and cruising, sea air hitting his face in a cooling spray.
Humming to himself, he gets to his feet easily on the board, and sways with the water's direction.
This is life, he sighs out in relief. As his gaze crosses the beach he loves so dearly, of the laughing children and fond parents, he catches sight of a woman. Sitting all alone, hugging her legs to herself as she gazes out at the very sea he's cruising through.
No one should look sad in a place as beautiful as this, he thinks. And while his view keeps on wandering across the villagers' familiar faces, across the infinite span of the sea, he finds that his eyes, too, keep going back to her.

2nd Gen Shawpack Pookies
I’ve had them in my notes for AGES and I’ve still yet to finish a design, but i do intend on creating little skits of them cuz of how much I’ve invested giving them all personalities and pinterest boards. (If this isn’t me exhibiting my deep love for the Redactedverse idk what is)
Some descriptions are longer than the others, I’ve obviously put more thought into certain characters
•Shaw Twins
- both children are sadly ungifted in the kitchen, despite the fact that David has made them his little helpers when since they were little. Multiple flames have been put out because of them.
-Both do share a love for nature like their father.
Gabriella Shaw (Gabby)🫶🏻
- Angel carbon copy with a dash of Gabriel’s silliness and courage, which always made David smile.
- Natural born Leader. Despite being the eldest child (4 fucking minutes) David has never burdened them with the responsibility or thought of inheriting the business. She stepped into the leadership role on her own, with more brighter approach, personality wise.
- Rollerskates, Angel started taking her to roller rinks since age 6 and she loves taking Lyss and KC with her
Callum Grey Shaw 🌱
-Yes he’s named after the sweet Caelum. David wanted to commemorate his childhood friend.
- Inherited David’s resting bitch face, if you point it out he’ll even growl like he does.
- Great Observer. Because his sister was the more outgoing one of them, he was always the listener, making him more emotionally aware, noticing things most people miss.
- Loves sitcoms. He’s probably watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine so many times he can name episodes in order. This also translates his love for the security company his dad runs. Always begging David to take him to work with him. (I think we know who inherits the company)
•Talbot Troop
-Asher is the only one I picture having multiple kids with a range of age gaps.
-No doubt the most outgoing ones of the pack.
August Talbot (Auggie) 🍕
- Foodie
- Life of the party, stealin’ hearts with his million watt smile
- DDR is his sport
Kelcee Talbot (KC/CeeCee) 🧠
- Designated driver of the group
- Straight A student. When she was young she’d share all the interesting facts she’d pick up on to her parents and it always astounded Asher, how she can command a room, especially being the SOMEWHAT, mellow one among the three.
Oliver James Talbot (OJ/Ollie) 🪲
- Very inquisitive
- Youngest of the pack (the only 7yr old in a group of 17 year olds)
- Has a special bond with Alyssa
•Greer Icon
Alyssa Marie Greer 💥
-Now while i think of Milo and SW as the D.I.N.K (dual income, no kids) couple, and i will somewhat always think that, but— this name crossed my head and I just cannot let it go. IT HONORS MARIE OK—
-Unsurprisingly is always the best dressed. Milo is very proud.
-Has a very ‘takes no bull personality’ making them the most intimidating out of group.
- Plays archery competitively
- Straightforward
-Weirdly great with babies, explains her close bond with Oliver
•Collins
Sean Riley Collins 🥐
- aka Peace Officer Collins
- The code name speaks for itself, he is very much like his old man when it comes to ensuring his friends don’t do anything stupid, and in the very common occasions they do, he of course serves them with a patented Collins lecture.
- He may be half vamp, but that doesn’t mean he has to have a mundane food pallet, this man can COOK and bake, a soft, crispy shelled sourdough being one of his specialties
•Solaire
Hugo Solaire 🎭
- theater kid
- sarcastic, confident, somewhat frivolous, despite his royal status, which gets him in trouble for
- May or may not have a thing for the alpha’s daughter.
- Like Vincent, he’s mostly only close to the Collins’ but has occasionally hanged out with the shaw pack.

Jake Peralta x Male!reader - surprise
Tumblr media
Ooooo can I please request a “Brooklyn nine nine” Jake Peralta x platonic shy male reader who’s in the military and the adoptive son of Holt and Kevin. Pretty cute he surprised them and the 99 at his dads house having party - Anon💜
Standing in front of the door, you smiled to yourself as you quietly opened it and slipped in, setting your pack on the floor by the door, you turned around.
A few people stopped to look at you, and you walked over to one of them.
“Do you happen to know where I could find Keven and Raymond?” You asked quietly.
“I believe I last saw them upstairs.”
Nodding, you made your way upstairs, and followed the sound of talking.
The sound of what seemed to be people being told off and you pushed the door open, making everyone turn their attention towards you.
You smiled and saluted.
“(Y/N)…” Kevin whispered.
You smiled and the captain from the 99th precinct saluted you back.
You stepped into the room and walked over to them both, standing in front of them with your hands clasped behind your back.
“I missed you guys…” you whispered.
“We missed you too.”
Kevin placed his hand on your shoulder, and Holt held his hand out to you and you rolled your eyes, hugging him tightly.
He patted your back a few times and you hugged Kevin and he hugged you back.
“How long have you been back?”
“About two hours give or take.” You said.
They both nodded and you turned to the other people in the room.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to interrupt I uh.. I just wanted you guys to know I was home.”
“Are you turning in for the night?”
You shook your head.
“I’m going to head into my room.”
“It may be a mess, we had some snoopers.”
You smiled and nodded and wondered back downstairs to grab your bag and you rushed back up to your room and closed the door.
“Who’s that?!” Amy whisper yelled.
“That is our son (Y/N). You will leave him alone.” Holt said.
“You have a son?!” Jake gasped.
“Leave him alone.” Kevin repeated.
They finished scolding everyone and ushered them all down the stairs, but Jake had to get upstairs to talk to you.
So when he saw his opening he took it and rushed to the room he saw you go into and knocked frantically on the door.
Walking over, you opened it and Jake all but barrelled inside and grinned at you.
“Hello?”
“I’m Jake Peralta! What’s it like having captain holt as a dad?! Is he stern?! What’s Kevin like?!”
You just stared at him and peaked down the hallway, closing the door and you turned around to look at him.
“I uh.. didn’t my dads tell you to leave me alone?” You asked confused.
“Yeah but I suck at listening.” He grinned.
You nodded your hand and awkwardly stood there looking at him and Jake grinned at you.
“Are you all robotic too?”
You gave a small laugh and shook your head as you walked over to your desk, pulling out a chair you placed it in front of your bed and gestured to it.
Jake sat down and you sat at the top of your bed, looking at him.
“No, I’m not.”
“Is it weird they’re all like robotic basically? Like do they show emotion?”
You shrugged a little.
“Not really I guess. I’m used to it, I know they care…”
Jake carried asking questions and you sat there awkwardly answering them and not long later both your dads came rushing into the room.
“Peralta!” Kevin snapped.
“Sorry! Sorry I was curious!” Jake laughed.
“I’m sorry if he bothered you, he is going now.” Holt said.
You shook your head, waving your hand a little bit.
“It’s alright I guess. Is the party still going on?”
“Yes. You do not have to come down if you choose not too.”
“Thanks dad, but I’ll come down, at least you know he won’t sneak off again.”
Jake grinned sheepishly and you all went down the stairs.
Except this time Kevin and Holt both stuck to your side like glue, scaring anyone from the 99 away if they tried to get closer.
Sitting in a chair behind your dads, you gently tugged at Kevin’s hand and he looked down at you, turning around to look at you.
“Are you okay?” He whispered.
“Stop scaring them away.”
“You want to talk to them?”
“Not really but you know they’re going to keep asking you questions right?”
Kevin sighed and nodded his head.
“I suppose you are right. Raymond it may be best to address this now, you know they will not drop this subject.”
“I know.”
So they rounded up the 99 team and made everyone stand in front of them to ask questions and pretty much all of them were about you and about you growing up with your two dads.
As much as they didn’t want to, they answered the questions in the hopes it would make everyone drop the subject.
But Jake was determined he wanted to know anything and everything there was to know and he wasn’t going to stop until he knew literally everything.
Before leaving Jake looked at you and grinned.
“You’re my new best friend…” he whispered.
With that he left and you looked to your dads.
“He can’t be serious.”
“Unfortunately he is.” Holt sighed

Bucky
“You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, Asa Nusara.” Bucky’s voice was like warm honey laced in gold.
“Your attempt at lying is becoming more unconvincing by the day, James.” Asa replied jokingly, but with a serious tone.
Bucky frowned as the back of his fingers traced over her dark beautiful skin on her cheeks. His thumb runs over her brow bone and then up over her head.
A beautiful black tattoo in the shapes of waves followed over her skull.
He traced those as well.
Asa could feel her heart accelerate as his blue eyes finally found her black ones.
Usually, he would play along with her jokes, but this time, his face stayed serious.
“I’d never lie to you, Ukatana.” He whispers.
The last word dangles in the air. The post coital energy around them envelopes the word tightly, holding onto what’s left of the conviction he’s trying to convey to her.
He feels her bare legs run in between his and she lets out a pleased sigh.
She takes his hand that’s on her face into her own hands and intertwines their fingers together.
Leaning in closer to him, she rests her forehead against his.
She thinks she’s going to fall asleep.
Bucky lets his nose slide against hers, tilting his head just slightly to capture her lips in a soft and gentle kiss.
“You really have to go in the morning?” He asks, pouting his bottom lip like a little boy.
“Ayo and Okoye need me. I need them. We need possession of the orifice necklace.” She states, her authority and dominance showing him that there is no hesitation in the matter, leaving no room for anything to get in the way.
He respected this greatly.
“I’ll be damned to find out why that necklace is so special that you must be away from me for a weekend,” he brings her hand to his lips and kisses the matte black band on the ringer finger. It was interlaced with gold vibranium, “unacceptable. you’ve only been my wife for nine days and I already have to let you go.”
Nusara chuckled.
“Forty-eight hours. It’s barely letting me go.” She leans forward and kisses him again, “I’ll return Monday morning. We have to start packing anyway to go back to Wakanda. Did you forget our beautiful home awaits us?”
“And our little goats.” Bucky adds with a small chuckle.
“The goats are to stay at the farm, James. I mean our home.”
Bucky smiles and nods slowly.
He lets go of her hand and grabs the side of her waist, bringing her in closer to him.
“I know, Asa. I know.”
Asa drapes her left arm over Bucky’s torso and rests her right cheek just over heart.
In minutes, they’re both asleep in his small Brooklyn apartment where they had fallen more in love two years ago.
~
Monday evening rolls around faster than Bucky had thought it would. With packing and getting things ready for his move back to Wakanda, it took up most of his time and it kept him busy.
He had packed most of his things. He left most of Asa’s stuff untouched as to not invade her privacy, nor the Dora Milaje’s.
The black and red cape he was gifted on his wedding day to wear is the last thing he packs away into suitcase before he hears a knock at the front door.
He’s confused as he look at the door.
All his friends weren’t in town so it couldn’t be Sam or Wanda. The Thunderbolts haven’t been together in months, and Yelena was oversees.
Asa never knocked.
Bucky, with the help of his job to the government, had special biometric locks installed at his apartment so she would just use that to get in.
A knock wasn’t necessarily normal so the uneasy feeling he gets is expected.
Letting out a deep breath, he finishes zipping up the bag and stands up on sturdy legs before making his way over to the door.
When he opens it, standing there are Nakia and Ayo holding their vibranium spear, their postures high and head straight.
Standing in front of them is Shuri.
Aside from the formal arrival, what pushes Bucky’s nerves off the edge is Ayo’s obvious tear streaked cheeks.
His stomach sinks.
Hard.
“White wolf.” Shuri’s tone when she calls Bucky his title is sturdy but soft.
He knows that tone all to well.
Bucky ignores her completely, his trained eyes fixing on Ayo. Through much training and durability, she looks strong and powerful, but Bucky’s experience quickly helps him see the falt in her facade.
Her inexperience to hide emotion is in her eyes and the way she is currently blinking.
Bucky has a gut feeling but he won’t listen to it unless it’s said.
He puffs out his chest and his eyes stay on Ayo.
“Where’s Asa and Okoye?” Bucky asks Ayo. But Ayo is staring over his shoulder, unmoving, “Ayo-”
“Sergeant Barnes-” Shuri starts again.
“Okoye is back in Wakanda already.” Ayo responds, cutting Shuri off.
Bucky’s expression doesn’t change but his left eye twitches slightly. He can feel his hand tightening around his doorknob.
Nakia, Ayo, and Shuri step foot into the apartment, forcing Bucky to take a step backwards.
The door is closed behind them.
It’s then, in the privacy and intimate setting of his and Asa’s home, that Bucky’s walls start to deteriorate a little more. His breathing picks up and his eyes are switching back and forth between the three women.
They also are less stiff and Shuri’s eyes soften.
Time goes by slowly as nothing is said.
Bucky’s practically huffing out of his nose now as he take another step back.
“No.” Is all he says. It’s a low growl.
“I’m sorry—” Shuri barely gets her words out before Bucky’s palms goes to his eyes and he closes his lids tightly.
“No.” He says loudly.
“Bucky—” Shuri tries again.
Her words this time are cut off by a very audible shaky inhale through his nose.
Oh, he was going to cry.
They watch as his fingers grip into his hair, his eyes finally opening and gaze gluing down to the ground.
“I’m very sorry, Sargent Barnes.” Nakia.
His face turns into an angry snarl as he turns around.
“Damn it, damn it,” he repeats. His left hand grabs desperately as his hair, “damn it!” He yells so loudly it bounces off the walls.
His vision is compromised now. Water is all he can see.
Pain and anger is all he can feel.
Ayo isn’t one to easily flinch, but Bucky’s kick to the glass coffee table does it for her.
“No, no, no,” he keeps saying to himself. Shuri swallows hard, wiping a lone tear off her face that had fallen during his last yell, “Shuri, no.” Bucky whimpers as he finally turns around to face them. Their heart breaks as they watch him finally burst into tears, “please.”
Bucky looks like he’s moments away from collapsing, his face paling dramatically, when Shuri’s hands goes to his shoulders. She gives him a sympathetic look as she guides them both slowly to sit down on his couch. The shards of glass breaks underneath her shoes and the soft fabric of the sofa underneath them, is the only sound for a few seconds until they are finally next to each other.
He falls apart.
Bucky brings her in for a tight hug.
She swallows thickly as his sobs echo loudly around the room.
They don’t know how long they stay like that.
It feels like hours until he speaks again.
Eyes bloodshot, he stares at his hands between his knees as he picks at them.
He’s also cried out; heart and soul deflated.
“How’d it happen?” He asks, ripping off the bandaid.
His voice is hoarse and he sounds rough.
“We had traced down the orifice. We were just about to enter the chamber it was located in when our entire system was breached,” Nakia states with a steady voice, “it caught us all off guard. He—” she stops right away and Bucky’s eyes drifts from his hands to the space above it. He knows she’s talking about whoever it was that murdered his wife, “It— we don’t know who the figure was—it wore all black, covered head to two, not nearly as skilled but it caught us off guard enough that when they came in—” Bucky’s face twists at this, he almost looks disgusted and physically repulsed by what he was hearing, “she was the one inside —it was fast. Too fast for reaction.”
There’s a long silence. They can feel his fury as Bucky slowly stares up at Nakia.
“You’re telling me,” He sounds menacing and cold, “an incompetent criminal in comparison to the Dora Milaje, caught my wife and her friends off guard enough to kill her in a fraction of a second and escape fast enough for you to not even see who the hell they were?”
His loud voice reverbs around them.
They felt guilty, and just as pained as him.
Nakia swallows thickly and blinks away the tears in her eyes.
“They were fast.”
“I heard you the first damn time!” He screams.
Ayo’s spear comes down hard in front of Nakia as a form of protection.
Bucky stands abruptly and points behind him as he stares at Nakia.
“My wife was in there alone! You let her go in alone! You left her without protection, without guarding her back. You let her with a will of your own step into that room and didn’t think to keep your guard up after a breaching, and watched her get killed!”
A spear is placed horizontally to his throat by Ayo and Bucky swallows hard.
He knows better than to react this way.
These girls weren’t just the most powerful women he had ever known in his life and deserved the upmost respect, especially after what they’ve done for him, but they were his friends.
He’s being emotional and irrational.
“James. Step back.” Ayo says. Bucky does as he is told, more tears falling out of his eyes, “Nakia wasn’t even on this mission.”
Bucky looks at Ayo. He sniffs.
“But you were, Ayo.”
Ayo swallows hard.
“I was,” her voice is less uneven, “And what she is telling you is the truth. None of us saw it coming. I don’t think the person that was there even realized we were either. I’m so truly sorry. I know you are in pain, and so are we. If we could’ve prevented it we would’ve, but it happened very quickly. She was killed before we realized someone else was even in there.”
He didn’t know what he wanted to do anymore. As his heart trembled, Bucky wasn’t sure if he wanted to set the world on fire or himself.
He steps away from them and walks over to his window. He looks outside into the Manhattan skyline.
He bites at his bottom lip as he tries to control more bottled emotions.
He refuses to look around his apartment, but it’s hard to when he sees some of the reflection of it in the glass.
It was a reminder that Asa had been here just two days ago, living a domestic life with him.
His heart pains again and he whimpers.
It takes him minutes to realize Ayo had come up behind him and put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“I’m assuming they got away? Since you don’t know who they are.” They don’t have to verbally respond. The silence is already an answer for him, “and that they got the necklace.”
Pointless mission.
Failed mission.
With a cost- a loss.
His wife.
“How did it happen?” He asks, emotionless.
He had to find out information. He needed it. No matter how hard.
“Gun shot.”
He swallows the knock in his throat and keeps his back rigid, eyes never deviating from the skyline.
“Where?” He asks next. There’s a long silence and he can feel his anger brewing even further. Brewing for the stranger that did this to his wife, “where?”
“Her skull.”
Bucky cringes.
“Fuck.” He breathes out.
He runs a hand down his face.
“And Okoye?”
“Stray bullet grazed her cheek. She’s in recovery.”
~
Bucky’s welcome to Wakanda a week later was much more than warming.
Everyone was heartfelt and kind to him. He appreciated it, he always would from this country, but he also expected no less.
They felt pity for a young widower. For a loss of one of their greatest in their force.
The loss of a powerful woman, the greatest he’s ever known; fallen to a bullet.
He never would’ve expected this. Not in a million years.
The funeral is a nightmare. People greet him as if they’ve known him forever, some he never even knew. They don’t give him space and they mention her name each time.
He could only handle so much.
He hates thinking about it, but her coffin is gorgeous, laced in gold and red vibranium.
He watches, sucking his bottom lip into his mouth, as its lowered to its resting place at the end of the evening, just before sun fall.
Bucky doesn't take off his wedding ring.
He doesn’t think he ever will.
The Wakandans still allow him to reside in the city if he chooses. He’s surprised they’ve even given him an option since what happened with Zemo. Asa had been, for the most part, his plane ticket in.
His and Asa’s beautiful apartment remains untouched and brand new. It grazes the highest of clouds as it overlooks the rivers and hills he’s learned to call home.
Now, this beauty reminds him of his lost love. It physically breaks his heart.
Looking into the bright orange sun, he’s reminded of the stolen nights in the huts.
He remembers their long nights where they would help their goats and sheep give birth to their little babies, when she had taught him how to bottle feed them.
When they had fallen deeply in love and had their beautiful Wakandan wedding.
Being here, in their apartment, without her, felt wrong.
“Hey.” Sam’s voice startles Bucky for a moment before he turns around to face his best friend.
Sam gives him a weak but genuine smile.
Bucky sticks his hands in his pockets and looks back into the setting Sun.
“Doesn’t feel right being here anymore.” Bucky feels that anger again, the one that makes him physically boil.
“What’s next?” Sam asks.
“I’m going to find him, Sam. I’m going to find who did this and stick a knife through his heart.”
~
You
Your life was destroyed at nineteen years old.
Up until then, you served as a Hydra operative. Your father was one and Hyda is all you’ve known. You were taught by them and trained by them. Willingly, you stayed. You worked as a recruited spy, performing mediocre missions for them when needed.
It had been going well for you, until your nineteenth birthday.
You were taken in the middle of the night, drugged and blind folded.
When you woke up, your living hell began.
You woke up in a dark cell.
To your left was a bolted door that probably weighed hundreds of pounds. To the right of that was a little metal bucket.
The stench was unbearable and you were freezing cold.
The walls around you were cement, molded, and so was the floor underneath you. You were terrified as you continued to awaken from your drugged state, finally gathering the energy to begin crawling at the chains around your wrist.
You were chained.
You began hyperventilating.
You became frantic as you tried getting them off.
“Hayden.” You stopped. The voice got your attention and you looked towards the door. It began to creak open. You found yourself moving away from the man, your legs flailing wildly as you tried to get away, but he kept getting closer. “Hayden.” He says again.
“That’s—that’s not my name.” You stutter out, throat dry like sand paper.
“It is now.” He crouches down in front of you and repeats, “Hayden.”
You didn’t have the patience for games.
“Where am I?” You ask, stronger this time.
“You’re at a Hydra facility, agent.”
You frown.
You were being held captive, treated as an enemy. Why were you taken against your will? By your own people?
“I don’t understand. I would’ve just come if asked.”
The man chuckles and shakes his head.
“Not for this,” he leaches forward for a strand of your hair and rolls it between his fingers, “you were chosen specifically for this, but we wanted to make sure you wouldn’t back out.”
You felt pride.
“As long as it’s in the desire of Hydra and helps us, I most likely wouldn’t back out.” You say matter-of-factly.
It’s then that you realize your face is covered entirely. The only thing peaking out are your eyes. That’s why your voice was muffled.
The dark eyed man nods his head.
“You were chosen as test subject zero eight seven six for the orifice experiment.” He says.
You’ve heard of it before.
“Human enhancement, but with the capability of healing and given any power of their choosing, based off placebo and free will. Mental. It’s energy is off psychosis.” You say.
“Correct. Which is why it needs to be a hydra agent. Your power of your choosing will side with our shared desires. Your controlled power will originate from this,” he holds something up in front of you.
It’s a gold chain, and dangling off of it is a red stone, circle shaped.
It shines, its light bouncing off your face.
It was gorgeous.
You find yourself reaching for it naturally before he pulls it away from you.
“We will train you, little girl. Then we’ll begin experiments. But between experiments, your endurance will be put to the test.”
You could only frown as you heard the door open again.
When your eyes landed on the new guest of arrival, a shiver ran down your spine.
You weren’t star struck.
You were repulsed.
Despite the urge to get away as far as possible, his blue eyes were startling in the darkness of the room. They were piercing and hard to look away from.
You had only ever heard about him.
Hydra’s biggest and best asset.
The man who not only surpassed you in every way possible, but believed in everything you didn’t.
It didn’t matter to you that he was now part of Hydra, because in reality he wasn’t.
He, Bucky, believed in everything you didn’t. This man in front of you right now was just a puppet.
You never understood how Hydra could accept that.
You hate everything he stood for as both Bucky and the winter soldier.
You were equally envious of this Weapon as you were disgusted by it.
He had only gotten so close to you before you quickly hocked up what you had in your throat and spat it at his shoe.
“Slap her.” The man instructs loudly, “Enough to hurt, but not kill.”
Oh, bring it.
You grunted before the pain escaped in your skull. Your head fell back against the wall and you could taste the iron in your mouth.
Your vision went black for a fraction of a second.
“Hayden, this is just the start. He will make you endure pain so you can build your endurance and tolerance to it. And you’ll learn to take it.”
You didn’t enjoy this part of your gift.
You spat at the winter soldier’s feet again, this time blood was mixed in with your saliva.
“Hit me again, you piece of shit.” You grit your teeth at the soldier.
The man looks at Bucky and nods at him, and as the soldier is about to hit you, you kick his arm away, making him fall forward. You wrap your legs tightly around his head.
You let out a growl as you began to choke him with your thighs.
“Fight back, soldat.” You grunt through clenched teeth.
The soldier obliged, easily slipping from your grip and wrapping his left hand around your trachea.
You gasped for breath as you stared at those soulless eyes.
Blue like the sky on a sunny day.
Your least favorite kind of weather.
“Tomorrow will be your first dose, Hayden.” The man kicks the Weapon’s leg to let you go, “Soldat.”
You gasped again as his grip left your throat and you were able to breathe again.
“Rot in hell, you disgusting pig.” You say hoarsely through burning pain.
~
You were excited to be Hydra’s next test subject, and it started off well.
After your first dose of the burning drug, you became faster and gained more dexterity. You’ve never felt anything like that very first dose. You were convinced, you were all convinced, it was going to be a success.
But that was also when the accident happened.
You knew it was an accident when it happened, and not intentional, because you knew for a fact that Hydra wanted you in prime condition. They wanted you trained, but they didn’t want anything getting in the way of the experiment failing.
It happened fast.
You had been in the room again with the soldier. Your face was still covered, minus your eyes. You figured they wanted your identity hidden.
Bucky’s eyes never left yours. Not when you were punching him or when he kicked your head.
He had stood up, stepped on your cheek with his boot, and forced your face into the ground.
You’ve never felt any pain like it.
You grabbed his leg, pulling him down onto you when you felt that searing pain in your lower stomach.
You were gasping and breathing as your wide eyes stared back into his cold ones.
What the fuck did he just do?
“Soldat!” The shout came and the soldier quickly pulled himself off of you, knife still in hand.
They had punished him in a severe way that night, as deserved, and you were taken away to the medical wing.
For the first time in your short life, you almost showed a reaction of sorrow when after your surgery the doctor that told you he had shredded your entire uterus.
They had to use 15 litters of blood to keep you stable.
After three weeks in recovery, and being of no use to your people, you were finally allowed to resume training again.
This time, the soldier was only pulled out for you every once in a while.
Each time, you wanted to kill him. Kill him for being a disgrace to existence and for taking away something you never really wanted until it was gone.
After your second dose, you were the same in terms of strength and skill, but when three weeks went by without another dosage, they could sense something was wrong.
You started getting sick.
You were dying.
It didn’t take much for everyone to realize you were being poisoned by the serum.
Wether it was the incident with the soldier that threw it off, it was never confirmed, but suspected.
After your fourth dosage, you got better again, almost like a cure, and you were able to go three and a half weeks without getting sick.
With each dosage you stayed better for longer, but that was all it did for you.
Hydra took you off the mission five months later, choosing they’d terminate the project all together. You weren’t gaining more powers and it was killing you instead.
Issue with that was you now needed the dosage to keep surviving. After your eighth and last dosage at the facility, you’d knew you’d only be okay for two months before your body started dying again.
They promised to help you by sending you what you needed to keep you going. By your first year, you noticed your cure time was no longer prolonging. After each dosage, you’d only be able to be okay for four months before you got sick again.
The feeling you got when you were sick and being poisoned was unbearable.
It’s been ten years, and you still weren’t used to it.
You never had to worry about a lack of shortage or help since Hydra still had smart scientists prepping your medicine for you.
That is, until exactly three months ago when you got the news that the orifice dose was being discontinued due to lack of certain resources.
“They expect me to just die?”
“There is one way. One way we can try. The orifice necklace. Its power is immeasurable. Some of the strongest on earth. Maybe it could even cure you.” Your closest friend, and your favorite Hydra agent partner, Ivan says.
The orifice necklace.
“Gabrïël destroyed that after he found out my mission was a failure.” You say.
“That wasn’t the real one, Hayden. I can tell you where it is, but the issue is, there are others after it now, too.”
“Who?”
“Wakanda. Even some of the lasting Avengers. Other spies working for the government. Sword, even.”
“Tell me where it is. I can get there first.”
The night before you left for Mexico for the orifice necklace, you stared at what little you had left of your medication in your medicine cabinet.
You had two doses left, one which you would need to take in four weeks.
If you didn’t get that necklace soon, you were dead in nine months.
You wouldn’t dare tell a soul, but you were terrified.
Your hand trembled as you held one of the remaining doses.
You didn’t want to die, and least of all, you didn’t want to run into anyone while trying to retrieve it.
One of the people which was a complete waste and a vermin in your eyes.
You took a deep breath, and put the bottle back in the cabinet. You walked back to your room and sat on your bed.
You began looking through your photos on your phone.
It was a photo of you and Leo, your best friend, just a week before his murder.
He was killed by the attack in New York by the Avengers nearly a decade ago.
This was your reason for trying to get that necklace.
You would keep yourself alive for him.
Placing your phone down next you, you then roll up your left sleeve.
A large scar runs down the skin.
He had done that after your third dose.
You had then stabbed him in his thigh. You felt great when you’d done it, but when you were finally alone in your cell, you cried for the first time.
Bucky Barnes.
That’s what his name was.
~
“Get me in, Ivan.” You spoke through your com, “I can get out just fine with my speed, but I need it open first.”
“I’m trying, Y/N. You need to bare with me. Try going a little to your right.” Ivan says.
You roll your eyes and hold your arms a little higher. You had already gotten inside the coal mine and you were standing just outside the chamber, but through the back.
To avoid any possible run ins with the cocky avengers, you both decided this was the best approach.
You were lasering thorough the thick rocks, but the laser was acting up.
Just when you’re about to to complete the circle, it goes out again.
“Jesus, fuck, Ivan.”
“I’m doing my best here. I’m pulling what power I can without the risk of calling attention. Even if that side of the freaks aren’t here, if Hydra even finds out too, we’re screwed. They don’t know we’re here stealing this.”
“Don’t know why they never tried to get it before. Also, do you really think the avengers are even here yet? They don’t have the same power of jets they used to have when their lord and savior Stark was still around. And Hydra will give me a promotion for this. That is, if this necklace really works and actually saves my life.” Your voice drifts our towards the end.
“You’ll be fine.” Ivan says quietly, “Got it!” Just as he says that, the power returns to your laser and it finishes the cut. You keep your left hand on the rock so it doesn’t fall and make a loud noise. You lay it gently down on the floor.
You stand back and look at it.
“I guess it’s big enough for me to crawl through.”
“Make it fast.” Ivan says.
With a sigh you stick the laser in your back leather pocket and crawl down onto all fours. You shimmy your way through the whole and into the chamber Ivan led you to. It’s dark, smells like wet earth, and is humid. Your eyes dart around the room, until finally you find a marble box on a stand on the far right side of the room.
You were thankful for your enhanced eye sight. You knew a regular person wouldn’t be able to see it right away.
You could feel your excitement brewing.
This was your ticket to survival.
You didn’t want to die.
You open the box, and you feel the tears brewing in your eyes when you see it.
A beautiful red stone.
You take it into your hand. You don’t feel different yet, but you figured it takes time.
A very small sound of a foot on a small rock has you quickly going for your gun on your waist.
Pulling your face and hair covering higher over your head, you blindly aim your gun behind you, giving away three shots.
You know reaction is reckless and stupid. Under normal circumstances, you wouldn't haven’t pulled the trigger that soon, or at all. But with that necklace in your hand, you were afraid of losing it.
You were desperate. Your action was irrational as you shot at whatever was behind you, and escaping through your man made hole.
And then you ran and ran in the darkness.
The orifice necklace was right there, right in your hand.
“I have it, Ivan. I have it!” You shouted happily as you ran towards your jet.
“Make it quick, Y/N. I see something here on my radar.”
“On it.” You reply back curtly.
You retrace your steps with practice. The second you’re back in your seat, the sigh that leaves your mouth is palpable.
Ivan’s already in the pilot seat, getting the aircraft ready for take off.
You pull the necklace out of your jacket and stare at it in your hand.
Then something happens.
Your stomach drops.
There in your hand, the necklace begins to unravel into several pieces.
The red stone is the only thing still in tact, but in it is a message you hadn’t seen before.
Nice try.

Bucky
It’s been the hardest month of Bucky’s life since he’s been back.
He left Wakanda the day after the funeral.
He had decided that Brooklyn would be the best option for him.
His first home.
He still hung out with Sam and Wanda, and on occasion he kept contact with Yelena.
Him and Sam were the closest, though. They went on rogue missions together for the government and did their part when needed.
Every now and then, Peter Parker would stop by and say hello. It’s not like Queens was far. A whole different world, for sure, but he was practically a neighbor. Peter was like the little brother Bucky never had. It took him a second to warm up to Bucky, though.
Nobody would ever get closer to him as much as Steve or Sam ever did.
Getting used to life again after Asa was terrible.
Bucky even had to clean his internet history to make it.
They had googled places for puppy adoptions and vacation spots just the days before her death.
Bucky wouldn’t think about puppies for a long time now. Nor any vacations.
He just wanted to be alone.
The scarce missions with Sam helped some to distract him, but he’d still come home tired and depressed.
Everyday he’d try to contact Shuri or Ayo to find out any status of the mystery person from the chamber. When every-time he’d hear the same thing “nothing yet”, he’d do his own research, and also ask Sam for help.
One day, the answer was different.
“Hey, Buck. We’ve got a possible lead.”
He felt several emotions.
Excitement, fear, and anger.
For some reason, the confirmation of an actual killer reminded him that this wasn’t some nightmare he was just dreaming.
This was real.
Bucky had never sped so fast on his motorcycle before. Running a few red lights and nearly getting hit by a suv was the least of his concerns right now.
When he arrives to where the mission meetings have been held lately, Fury is already sitting there with Sam to his right.
“The Orifice Necklace,” Fury starts, a photo of it is on the screen behind him. Bucky eyes it like it’s the most disgusting thing he’s ever laid his eyes on. What was so special about this piece of shit necklace? “It’s a supernatural stone that releases some kind of healing power. Wakanda has known about it longer because of security reasons. They don’t want this in the wrong hands,” Bucky still doesn't understand the hype, but he understands it’s danger now in the wrong hands. Whoever it was that killed Asa really wanted it for some self gain, “Under certain circumstances, they’ve decided to ask us for help. The orifice necklace that was at the chamber in Mexico was a fake. The real one was taken we suspect maybe months before. We actually think it’s in the position of some undercover agent in Sword, which makes this tricky. Reasons for suspicions aren't disclosed other than sword members reporting strange incidents since a few months ago.” Fury says.
Bucky scoffs
“I know, Barnes, this isn’t easy for you—”.
“What?” Bucky practically laughs out the word, “you think going after the person who killed Asa is hard for me?”
“You aren’t to kill that target. That person doesn’t even have it. Their death is no use to us. Bring them in alive and alive only.”
“Are you going to tell me where?” Bucky asks.
“You sure Bucky is the right person for this? He’s too close to this case.” Sam says.
“You’ll both go together.” Fury answers. He turns back to Bucky, “There will be a gala in Venice next weekend. We suspect that the person who knows who has the real necklace, the person from the chamber, will also be at this event,” Fury doesn’t lose eye contact with Bucky when he says the next part very slowly; “We suspect them to be Hydra affiliated.”
Bucky’s jaw clenched and his nose flares.
“I expect no less from an inhumane group of people.” He’d say worst, and he wants to, but he’s feeling emotional again. He quickly rubs his nose over the back of his hand and moves up closer to Fury, clearing his throat, “Name?”
“We only have one name that came up in suspicion, based off an experiment that was done ten years ago. It was in a file we found during one of our hydra facility raids. Experiment Orifice. The subject’s name is Hayden,” Bucky takes in a deep breath as he hears the name for the first time.
“Any distinctive features to watch out for?”
“A scar on their left arm. Starting from the palm to the elbow. That’s all we know.”
“Bucky. You’re really sure you want to be the one to do this?” Sam asks, unsure about this whole thing.
“Who else are we gonna call, Sam? Wanda’s lost her shit. Peter’s a bartender now. Who the fuck knows where thor is. We have no options anymore. Even Maria is dead,” Bucky stands up, “We’ll go.”

By the time you were nine, you had met so many “friends” of your mother’s that you stopped listening to their names, if they even bothered to acknowledge you at all. Somehow they all showed up in various stages of dress in the kitchen when you were eating your breakfast before school. There were the ones that wore only tattered boxers and wife beater tanks. There was the one who actually stole the toast you were making on his way out the door. There was the one who sat down with you and did the crossword and asked how old you were and what your name was, only to never be seen again.
Mostly, they were simply ghosts. There for a moment, gone the next. That was how your mother liked them. Practically useless and only for one night.
You told yourself that you wouldn’t turn out like her. You studied and you left that tiny slice of hell in Appalachia and you never looked back. You went to college. You met Bob. You got a job. You traveled anywhere and everywhere they would send you at the drop of a hat.
And yet, somehow you had turned out just like her. You might be sitting in a bedroom in San Diego near the beach. But a thousand miles away, in a house with a cracked roof, your mother was sitting in a room not too dissimilar from the one you were in, fighting the same demons.
You had promised yourself you wouldn’t live the way she did. That you wouldn’t sabotage any chance of happiness because you were too scared to keep someone around long enough for them to realize you had nothing to offer except your body.
***
You weren’t sure where to go.
You had given up your Brooklyn apartment. Going home wasn’t an option. You hadn’t been back there in more than five years.
Usually, when you weren’t sure where to go, the first thing you did was call Bob.
That was no longer an option.
He left two days after the fight for a three week mission. The two of you stood in the foyer, looking at each other. You had only been there for one deployment, early in his career. You remember sitting on the steps of Bob’s Newport apartment and crying so hard when he left that someone shouted at you from an upstairs window to shut up.
Bob was wearing his green flight suit, his bags packed into his truck. He had on a pair of aviator sunglasses, so you couldn’t see his familiar blue eyes. But even without being able to see his eyes, you knew what he was thinking. With Bob, you always knew.
“I’ll see you when I get back,” Bob said quietly, one hand on the door handle.
You looked at him. “I won’t be here.”
“Honey,” he whispered softly. “Please, let’s not be like this.”
“Be safe,” you said, stepping forward, pressing your lips to his soft, familiar cheek. Bob’s hand found your waist naturally, fingers tightening, continuing to hold you even when you pulled back.
“Always,” he murmured.
You took a step back, Bob’s hand falling from your waist down to his side.
He looked at you, dejected. “I love you, Reid. I’ll talk to you soon, OK?”
You nodded. “You should get going. Or else the boat might leave without you.”
Bob pulled open the door, giving you one last look, before heading out down the steps toward his truck.
You pressed the door shut, sliding down against the wood, your butt slamming down onto the floor. You couldn’t bear to watch him drive away.

“It’s a good thing you’re getting this checked out,” the doctor said, rolling on her stool to the shelf on her right, pulling on a pair of gloves. “Always better to be safe.”
You laid back on the exam table, bare legs shaky in the stirrups.
“Can you scoot down for me please?” she asked and you wiggled down toward the end of the table, feeling the thin waxy paper beneath you tugging, threatening to rip. “Perfect.”
You stopped, feeling the air hit your exposed center.
“Going to feel a pinch,” she said and you closed your eyes, feeling the metal of the speculum as it spread you open. You cursed whoever invented it in your head silently. You had always thought it looked like some kind of demonic shoe stretcher.
For a few moments, the room was silent. And then there was blinding, searing pain as she punched a hole in your literal cervix. You gasped.
“OK, you can sit up,” she said. “I’m going to send this off to pathology. I’ll give you a call when the test results come in.” The doctor leaned forward, putting her hand on yours. Somehow in between cutting out a piece of your internal flesh and bagging it for the lab she had managed to peel off her soiled gloves. “Do your best not to worry, OK? Not until we get the results. Most of the time, symptoms like this are nothing to be concerned about.”
You nodded and she left the room, leaving you to dig your panties out from the pile of clothing on the chair.
A week later, your phone rang. You were sitting at a cafe in Dumbo when Mount Sinai’s contact flashed on the small screen.
You lifted the phone to your ear. “Hello?”
“Ms. Coleman?” There was a pause on the other end of the line. “The doctor was hoping you could come in today to discuss the results of your biopsy.”
You frowned. “Today? Is that bad?”
There was another pause. “We’re open until six. It’s important that you come today.”
You agreed, ending the call with a shaky hand and putting the phone face-down on the wooden table.
The first thing that popped into your head was how devastated Bob was going to be when you told him.
***
The house was quiet. Bradley called three times. Once when they first got to the location, which he couldn’t tell you about. A second time at the end of the first week. A third time in the middle of the second week. Each time, he gave you a verbal update on how Bob was doing.
Each time, you left the call feeling worse.
Your things were packed. You had a lead from a former colleague on a beach house in Santa Barbara. One thing about moving to San Diego was it had reminded you of how much you liked California.
You had just gotten home from pilates, wearing a cropped sports bra and a pair of matching biker shorts when your phone rang. You dug around in your purse that sat slumped on the countertop.
“Shit, shit,” you muttered, digging in the endless depths of the bag. “Finally.” You pulled it out and swiped right without looking at the caller ID.
“Hello?”
“Reid?” It was Bradley.
“Hey,” you said, leaning down and putting it on speaker phone as you unloaded the bag of groceries on the counter. “How’s it going?”
“Reid, honey, there’s been an accident.”
You froze. The blood rushing through your veins stopped. Your fingers dug into the countertop, keeping you standing.
“Reid, are you there?”
You felt your breath catch in your throat. “I’m here.”
“We’re at the hospital on base,” Bradley said quietly. “You should come.”
A tear slid down your cheek. “Can I talk to him?”
“I’ll explain when you get here,” Bradley replied.
“Is he OK?”
There was a pause. You could hear commotion in the background. “Reid?”
“Yeah?”
“Come now.”
You burst through the hospital doors. Everywhere you turned, there were people in Navy uniforms. Doctors in scrubs. Nurses with frowns on their faces. You felt like your lungs were on fire. You weren’t sure where you had parked, or if you had run every red light between Bob’s house and the hospital and you were only vaguely aware that you had forgotten to put on a sweater so you were running across the linoleum floor in a pair of Hokas and a tiny blue sports bra.
“How can I help you?” A nurse looked up at you from where she sat at a curved desk.
“Lieutenant Robert Floyd.” The words spilled out of your mouth in an avalanche.
“Relation?”
What were you to Bob? Best friend? Roommate? Family? The girl whose bed he sometimes slept in? You grimaced. “I’m his emergency contact.”
The nurse nodded, clicking her mouse. “Lieutenant Floyd was brought in an hour ago. He’s in critical care.” She looked up. “You can wait in the waiting room at the end of the hall.”
“Is he, is he OK?” you asked, voice shaking.
The nurse gave you a sympathetic look. “I’m sorry, the doctor will have to walk you through Lieutenant Floyd’s injuries, ma’am. Just take a seat. Someone will be out shortly to update you.”
She pointed down the hall toward a room that was encased in glass walls. You floated down the hallway, opening the door and struggling with its weight.
A tanned arm pulled it open and you looked up.
Bradley.
You were in his arms in an instant. The familiar pink peppercorn smell, mixed with jet fuel, flooding your nose. He was everywhere, all at once. But you still felt empty, even in his embrace.
He pulled back, his handsome face drawn and tired.
“Come here,” he whispered, steering you by the shoulders to a nearby chair. You watched as five pairs of eyes landed on you. Phoenix. Hangman. Fanboy. Payback. And an unfamiliar aviator. He was older than the rest, and shorter. But he had an air of importance around him. Wisdom. “This is Mav,” Bradley said, watching your eyes as you fixated on the additional person in the group. “He’s our team leader.”
“And Rooster’s uncle,” Fanboy chipped in.
“I didn’t know you had an uncle,” you murmured.
Bradley gave you a thin smile. “Lots we still don’t know about each other sweetheart. That’s OK.”
“Have you seen him?” you asked, craning your neck around, looking at the room. It was just the seven of you in a corner.
They shook their heads. Phoenix laid one hand on your knee. “Reid. He’s going to get through this.”
“I didn’t say it,” you whispered. “I was mad, so I didn’t say it.”
“Say what?”
“He said he loved me before he left. We always say I love you before he leaves.” A tear tumbled down your cheek. “And this time, I was mad. I was trying to prove a point. So when he said it, I didn’t say it back.” You put your head in your hands. “What if I don’t get the chance to tell him?”
Phoenix squeezed your knee. “You’ll get the chance.”
“Family of Lieutenant Robert Floyd?”
Seven pairs of eyes turned to the doctor standing in the doorway. You stood up, Bradley hovering next to you like you were about to fall. “Yes.” Your voice was thin, weak.
The doctor nodded. “Come this way ma’am.”
You looked around.
“Do you want us to come with you?” Jake asked quietly.
You shook your head. “No, um, I think I need to go alone.”
Bradley squeezed your bare arm. “We’ll be right here, OK?”
You nodded, following the doctor out of the room and into the hallway. The doctor led you down a winding hallway, the flickering overhead lights adding to the surrealism that you felt in that moment.
He paused outside of a closed door. “Lieutenant Floyd sustained a brain injury from the accident,” he said. You gasped. “We won’t know the extent until he wakes up.”
“So he’s in a coma?” you asked.
The doctor nodded. “He has a broken leg, he came in with a collapsed lung, and he’s currently in a coma.”
“Oh, my God,” you whispered.
He turned the handle to the door. “I’ll leave you with him.”
Inside the room was dim. You stepped forward. Bob laid on the hospital bed in the middle of the room. He looked small. He was so tall, and you always saw him as so strong. But there, in the bed, he looked feeble.
He looked the way you felt inside.
His glasses sat perched on the rolling table next to the window. You picked them up. There was a small crack on one of the lenses.
The room was quiet, save for the machines. This time there was no intubation, just a tangle of IVs and a heart monitor. You sat down on the edge of the bed, smoothing your hand over his hair softly, running your finger down his cheek.
“I love you, too,” you whispered. “I’m sorry I didn’t say it before. I was holding out because I was mad, and that was wrong of me. I don’t know if you know this, Bobby, but I’m kind of a bitch.”
No response. You hadn’t expected one, but the reality that he was there, but he also wasn’t, was difficult to wrap your head around.
You kicked off your shoes, and gently eased onto the bed, curling yourself around Bob’s side, careful to make sure that all of the IV wires were on the opposite side. You slung one arm across his abdomen, resting your head on his upper arm. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to happen,” you whispered. “You’re the one who sticks around, Bobby. You’re the dependable one, remember? I need you.” You squeezed your eyes shut, tears spilling out, soaking the coarse white cotton sheets between your body and Bob’s. “I fucking need you, honey. Now more than ever.”
You didn’t even realize you had fallen asleep until you heard voices whispering around you. You opened your eyes in a small sliver. Jake, Phoenix and Bradley stood near the doorway in a huddle, whispering in hushed tones.
“We can’t let her stay here like that,” Phoenix said. “She’s gotta go home. Shower. Eat. It’s not healthy.”
“Just leave her be,” Jake said and both aviators turned to him in surprise. “What? I’m a nice person. Besides, what harm could it do to leave her another hour? Doctor said he could wake up any minute. How do you think he would feel if he wakes up and she’s not here?”
“Seresin is right.” This time, Phoenix turned to Bradley in shock. “Floyd would tear this entire place apart if he woke up and she wasn’t next to him. I’ll go to their house and get her some stuff. Change of clothes. Something to eat. I’m sure the nurses will get a cot or something.”
“His glasses.”
The three of them turned. You had your eyes open, but they were focused on nothing. Just staring, blankly, at the wall.
“He needs his spare glasses. He keeps them in the top drawer of his bathroom. Green case.”
Bradley stepped closer, approaching the side of the bed. He reached out with one hand, touching your shoulder, and you moved away on instinct, crawling closer to Bob, practically laying yourself on top of him.
Bradley retreated.
“OK, honey. I’ll get his glasses.”
“And a book,” you whispered. “Whatever is on his nightstand.”
Bradley nodded. “What can I get you?”
You closed your eyes. “I don’t want anything.”
“Reid—”
“No,” you snapped. “Just leave. Please. I want to be alone with Bobby.”
You heard footsteps and the door closing and you opened your eyes, expecting peace. But Jake Seresin sat in a chair on the opposite side of the bed, one ankle crossed over the other knee.
You rolled your eyes. “Leave, Hangman.”
“He’s my friend, too,” Jake said.
“You pick on him. He told me.”
Jake nodded. “Yeah. And I’m sorry about that. Just like I know you’re sorry about the fact that you two were fighting before we left.”
You sat up. “How did you know about that?”
“Floyd over here told me.”
“Why would he tell you that?”
“Because we’re friends,” Jake said. “That’s what I’m trying to tell you.”
You looked down at Bob, brushing your fingers over his forearm, slipping your fingers into his. “Does he hate me?”
“He couldn’t hate you if he tried.”
A salty stream of tears started to fall and you didn’t even bother to try and stop them. “I hate myself right now.”
“That’s not what he wanted.”
You blinked before raising your eyes to Jake. For the first time, he looked genuine. Like he truly, actually cared about the conversation the two of you were having.
“He wanted to take it back.”
“Take what back?”
“Telling you to leave.”
You shook your head. “You’re just trying to make me feel better.” Jake smiled. “Does that seem like something I would do?”
You looked at him, and despite everything, found yourself smiling along. “No, I guess not.”
Jake stood up. “He’s going to be OK.” He approached the bed, and to your surprise, patted Bob’s unresponsive shoulder in a familiar, friendly way. “See you later, Floyd. Don’t make your girl here wait too long for you to wake up.” He smiled down at you and then he was gone, slipping out the door into the hallway and it was just you and Bob in the stillness of the hospital room, the quiet hum of machines, the sterile smell in the air.
You laid back down, head on the pillow near Bob’s, fingers trailing softly across his arm and chest. “I miss the way things used to be,” you whispered to him. “It was so much more simple when it was just you and me. Back in college. Before you left for the Navy.” You sighed, tracing your fingers up through his hair. “Before I fucked everything up.”
It was quiet. Too quiet. You missed the soft way that Bob snored in his sleep. You missed the way he hummed along as you were talking, small reassurances. You missed his goofy, crooked smile. You missed the way he held your hand sometimes when you drove long distances together, content in the silence.
You missed him, even though he was right beneath your fingertips.
***
Jake stepped into the elevator, pushing his hands into his pockets. It had been a day and a half since Bob was admitted. Everyone had gone home at some point except for you. Last time Jake checked, you were asleep on the cot that a nurse had rolled into Bob’s room.
He wasn’t paying attention, so when the elevator doors opened, Jake stepped forward, only to find himself face to face with you.
“Shit,” he said, blinking. “Sorry. Is this the fifth floor?”
You frowned and stepped inside. “Going to see Bob?” you asked, ignoring his question, pressing the five button for the fifth floor.
Jake looked out as the doors slowly closed. It was an unfamiliar floor, with a different layout than where they had Bob.
There was a small plaque sign on the wall in front of the elevator banks.
Oncology.
He turned to you. “What were you doing on that floor?”
You shrugged. “Went looking for better coffee. Thought there might be a cart or something.”
You kept your eyes turned straight ahead. Jake’s eyes roamed over your body, stopping at your hand where it was shaking next to your thigh.
The door dinged and opened. You glared at him. “What are you looking at?” you snapped, stepping out onto the fifth floor.
Jake followed you out into the hallway, heading for the waiting room. Phoenix and Bradley were huddled in the corner, deep in conversation. You were about to reach for the glass door when Jake’s arm caught yours.
You whipped around. “Hangman? What the fuck?”
“Why were you really on the oncology floor?” he whispered.
You shrugged his hand off. “Like I said, I was looking for coffee.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“And you think I care whether or not you believe me?” You scoffed at him, opening the glass door. Bradley and Phoenix looked up. Bradley stood up and gathered you into a hug and you melted into him. “Any update?” you asked.
Phoenix shook her head. “Not yet.”
The glass door skidded open and all eyes turned. A tall doctor in blue scrubs looked around. “Reid Coleman?”
You dropped your arms from where you had been holding Bradley and turned, tension filling every crevice in your body. “That’s me.”
The doctor smiled. “Lieutenant Floyd is asking for you.”

More spoons to go with these spoons. 🪴
“Go.”
“It’s for a month.”
“Yeah, you mentioned that. You should go.”
Before Ronan, Adam wouldn’t have thought twice about agreeing to a conservation trip. As soon as he received an email with an offer, he would have said yes without hesitation and immediately started preparing, making lists of what he needed to pack and scheduling appointments for vaccinations. Because as much as Adam loved his job at the United States Botanic Garden, the opportunity for fieldwork, to see species where they were meant to grow and not in pots in a greenhouse—Adam had caught an itch for it in college and every once in a while it flared up enough he needed to scratch.
But after Ronan—
“That’s a long time,” Adam said from his place sitting on one the workbenches in Ronan’s woodshop. A pellet stove in the corner chugged out heat, but Adam still wore his coat, hat, scarf, and one glove, his other hand bare so he had a better grip on his phone as he read the email about the trip to Ronan: someone from Brooklyn Botanic Garden backed out, someone else recommended Adam, would he like to go to the Andes for a month and collaborate on conservation efforts in the Amazon. “And it’s short notice.”
“When did three weeks become short notice?” Ronan looked up from the pattern he was carving into a drawer front to meet Adam’s eye before he went back to work. “And a month is not a long time.”
Nine months ago, Adam would have agreed. He’d gone to conferences and on business trips with far less lead time than three weeks, and he’d been on research trips longer than a month. But since he’d started things with Ronan, a week of vacation at the Barns passed in the blink of an eye while a Tuesday night in D.C. was languorous if Ronan was there.
Time, Adam found, did funny things when he was spending it with Ronan Lynch.
“So a month’s not a long time, but last weekend you got pissed off when I had to drive down here Saturday morning instead of Friday night,” Adam said. “That was all of, what, twelve hours?”
“You’re making—I know you’ve got a science term for this.”
“False equivalency.”
“Yeah, that. You’re making a false equivalency.” Putting his gouge down, Ronan brushed wood shavings off the drawer front before sitting back on his stool and crossing his arms over his chest as he looked at Adam. His safety glasses—not plain plastic ones like Adam sometimes wore, but a black-framed aviator style—turned Ronan into a 1980s computer nerd, and Adam was a little distracted as Ronan continued. “You staying in D.C. to help Gansey because the Pig shit the bed again is different than you going away for a month when I know about it three weeks in advance. I had plans that night that were—disrupted.”
“Your plans were delayed. I’m pretty sure they happened as soon as I walked through the door.” Setting his phone down next to him, Adam pulled on his other glove and pushed himself off the workbench. “And I’ll argue a month’s worse than a night.”
“So defend your argument, Dr. Parrish,” Ronan said, smirking a little as Adam approached him. He still wore his hat, but he’d lost his gloves and coat as soon as he’d started working, though Adam knew he had thermals on under his t-shirt and hoodie. “Tell me all the reasons you shouldn’t go to Peru.”
Adam had no defense that would hold water, no legitimate reason he shouldn’t go to the Wayqecha Cloud Forest Research Station to document and preserve native local plants threatened by ongoing timberline migration. There was funding for airfare and room and board, so money wasn’t an issue. It would be a good thing to stamp his name on, to associate with the Garden’s conservation efforts.
The reasons for Adam’s reluctance were personal, something he’d never let impact his work before, and it was a strange feeling. But going away for a month affected Ronan too, and even though Ronan told him he should go, Adam knew sometimes Ronan put Adam first without fully acknowledging his own wants and needs. Adam wouldn’t ignore that. He loved Ronan too much.
Sliding between Ronan’s stool and the table he was working at, Adam mirrored Ronan’s posture, crossing his arms over his chest as he made his first argument. “Not seeing you for one night is more tolerable than not seeing you for—” he paused and did a quick calculation of the length of the trip “—twenty-nine days.”
“I’ve gone more than twenty-nine days without seeing you.”
“Before you met me, yeah,” Adam said. “Since, I think the longest we’ve gone without seeing each other is four days.”
Ronan tipped his head a little from side to side, as if he agreed with this part of Adam’s argument. “Alright, so it’s a long time. What else?”
“Cell service is probably non-existent.”
“There are these things called satellite phones.”
“Funding only covers dormitory housing.”
“Better than camping.”
The next wasn’t a defense Adam was proud of, but he gave it nonetheless. “I’ll miss Valentine’s Day.”
Ronan’s reaction was precisely what Adam anticipated. He stared at Adam for a long moment before he asked, voice derisively flat, “Do you really give a shit about Valentine’s Day?”
“I don’t have enough data to make an informed opinion,” Adam replied.
Laughing loudly, Ronan shook his head as he uncrossed his arms and pushed Adam’s out of the way so he could unzip Adam’s coat. Tucking his hands inside it, he held onto Adam’s ribs, burying his fingers in Adam’s sweater as he looked up at him and said, “You’re a goddamn nerd. You know that, right? What else?”
And though he was doing everything he could to not say it, Adam only had one more defense. One that was short and truthful but increasingly important, something he didn’t recall ever saying to anyone before. Even the thought of it left him a little raw and bruised, the kind of thing he couldn’t stop himself from prodding, and Adam pushed firmly against it until he finally said, “I’ll miss you.”
“Do you think I won’t miss you?” Ronan’s face softened as he climbed off his stool and stood in front of Adam. “I will, asshole. You know I will. It’s going to be fucking awful.” Taking one hand out of Adam’s coat, Ronan took off his safety glasses, and, looking at Adam unobstructed, he said, “But you would have gone before you met me.”
It was true, Adam would have, but part of him still wanted Ronan to ask him—to tell him—to stay, to not fly three thousand miles away to a remote research station in Peru’s cloud forest where they may only have the chance to talk a few times over the course of a month. Living where they did, they couldn’t see each other constantly, but they spoke everyday, made arrangements to see one another on weekends and a time or two during the week. They were well acquainted with being together, apart. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked, and if either of them had a desperate need, they were only two hours away, not three thousand miles, a thirteen-hour flight.
But Ronan would never ask Adam not to go. The trip could be a month, two, six, and his response would be exactly the same. He’d never want to be the thing that stood in Adam’s way and stopped him from going after the things he wanted.
Just like Adam never wanted to stand in Ronan’s way either.
As much as their roots had tangled, as often as their trunks were parallel, there would be branches they’d have to travel alone. This would just be the first of many for Adam, and though he’d traveled through life perfectly fine before meeting Ronan, now that they were inextricably linked, those solo journeys felt like a real pain in the ass.
Particularly being apart for a month.
“I would have” Adam said after a moment, wrapping his arms around Ronan and pulling him close so they were chest to chest. “I would have said yes as soon as the message hit my inbox.”
“So go, Adam,” Ronan replied gently, putting his glasses down on the table behind Adam and pushing his arms under Adam’s coat again. Swaying them from side to side, Ronan leaned in and kissed Adam, murmuring against his lips, “I’ll be right here when you get back.”
After Ronan finished working, they walked back to the farmhouse through the few additional inches of snow that accumulated while they’d been in Ronan’s workshop, and sitting in front of the fire, Adam agreed to the trip.
Then he put his laptop away and showed Ronan a little appreciation.
In the lead up to his departure, Adam took a few days off and went to the Barns, where most of his time was spent in bed having frequent, feverish sex with Ronan, like they were far younger than they were, like they were stocking up for the time they'd spend apart. Then the day of Adam's flight, Ronan drove him to the airport and stayed with Adam as long as he could, until they had no choice but to part at the entrance for security.
Standing in front of Ronan, Adam held onto the lapels of his jacket, fingers clinging to the butter-soft leather. He wouldn’t rehash things they’d talked about repeatedly the past few weeks—emailing was the best way to stay in touch, Ronan would work with Gansey and Blue to keep Adam’s plants alive, Adam would call whenever he could, he would not bring Ronan an alpaca as a souvenir—so all Adam said as he stood toe-to-toe with Ronan in Dulles was, “I’ll see you when I get back.”
He could have said he’d miss Ronan, but he didn’t want to say it more than he had to, like it would lose its weight, its meaning, if he said it too much. And Ronan already knew; Adam didn't need to remind either of them it'd almost be Spring before they saw one another again.
"Twenty-nine days," Ronan replied, and a fizzy warmth spread through Adam, knowing Ronan was already keeping a countdown. Folding Adam in his arms, Ronan put his lips to Adam's cheek and murmured, "You'll be so busy doing all your plant nerd shit you won't have time to think about me."
That was untrue. Adam couldn't remember the last time he'd passed a waking hour without thinking about Ronan, because there was always something to remind Adam of Ronan, even if it was only leftovers from dinner the night before. It also made Adam think of the converse, that Ronan wouldn’t be busy with plant nerd shit and would therefore have plenty of time to think about Adam, and Adam didn't like that thought.
They kissed and hugged harder, and as the zero hour approached, when Adam was at risk of missing his flight if he didn't get in the line for the TSA, they said goodbye. Ronan lingered until Adam had to put his backpack on a conveyor and take his shoes off, and after he passed through scanners and retrieved his bag and shoes, Adam looked back to the check-in area and Ronan wasn't there.
He'd thought it was impossible to already miss someone he'd just seen so much, but he was wrong.
A layover in Lima, a night in Cusco, and a four-hour drive later, Adam arrived at the research station. He settled into his shared room, took Tylenol for an altitude sickness headache, and in his first spare moment, he connected his laptop to the patchy WiFi in the dining room.
He had an email from Ronan waiting for him in his inbox, just a single line.
28.
Adam replied, An eternity.
And though it might have seemed like an eternity, it passed quickly. There were plenty of plant nerd things to keep Adam occupied: cataloging current species to compare against the last census, observing more protected Phragmipedium in the wild than he’d ever seen in person before, collecting specimens in the hopes he’d discover something undocumented and get to name an orchid.
But the remoteness, the quiet, the lack of connectivity to the outside world, gave Adam ample time to miss Ronan. He tried filling his free hours with books he’d loaded onto his ereader and playing cards with the other researchers on the trip, but he wasn’t immune to sending the occasional brooding email. It’s so green it reminds me of the Barns last summer, and If we met ten years ago I could have missed you then instead of now.
To the second, a single-line reply came within a minutes: The elevation is doing something weird to your brain. Another email quickly followed: I miss you too. A third: Stop being maudlin. Youre turning into Gansey. And a fourth: 9.

Finally, it came to an end, and while Adam was glad for the time and opportunity at Wayqecha, he was also glad to leave.
To go home.
To see Ronan.
Which were really one in the same.
The day before he flew back to Washington, Adam started the reverse trip, and in Cusco, he walked around the city, picked up souvenirs, found a barber. There was another layover in Lima and the flight to Dulles felt interminable, but then the plane pulled up to the gate, Adam proceeded through customs, and there was Ronan, waiting for him in the baggage claim.
The sight of Ronan, smiling sharply, blue eyes brilliant, waiting for him—waiting for Adam to pick him up, to take him home—snagged around Adam’s spine and carried him forward, and it took more than a little self restraint not to run. A month, he thought as he walked toward Ronan, wasn’t so bad if this was what awaited him at the other end.
“What is this?” Ronan asked without greeting once Adam reached him, putting his hands on Adam’s face, Adam’s beard. A little wide-eyed and a little slack-jawed, he scratched his finger through the coarse blond hair on Adam’s cheeks and jaw, and beneath Ronan’s hands, Adam grinned so hard he thought his face would get stuck like that.
“When a man doesn’t shave the hair on his—”
“Jesus, shut up.” Ronan pulled Adam to him and kissed him hard for a long, long moment, so long Adam thought he was back in the Andes from how breathless it left him. When eventually he broke the kiss, Ronan left his lips against Adam’s and shook his head a little as he muttered, “I don’t like it. ”
“Come on.” Adam kept his face close to Ronan’s and moved back just enough to grab Ronan’s chin, Ronan’s own stubble rough against his fingers. It was exactly how Adam liked it, darkening Ronan’s jaw in a way that made him look a little rough and rugged, like Ronan wanted to be Adam’s favorite version of him when Adam got back. “You haven’t even given it a shot.”
Ronan shook his head again and swatted Adam’s hand so Adam dropped it from his chin, and despite his apparent dislike of Adam’s beard, he put his hands on Adam’s cheeks again. “I don’t care. It covers up your pretty face. Get rid of it.”
All at once, it felt like they hadn’t spent any time apart at all, like Adam hadn’t been gone for a month, because they’d fallen right back into the comfortable casualness they’d had since the very beginning. Adam had missed that almost as much as he’d missed Ronan, the easy touches, the mild teasing, the small, intangible things that came with loving Ronan Lynch.
“Okay. Point taken,” Adam replied. “If you still hate it in the morning, I’ll shave.” He had grown the beard more for ease of getting ready than aesthetic, and while Adam didn’t mind it after the initial itchiness of growing it out, he didn’t want to impede Ronan looking at his pretty face.
“That,” Ronan said as the buzzer for the baggage carousel delivering the luggage from Adam’s flight echoed through the baggage claim, “assumes we’re getting out of bed tomorrow.”
Laughing, Adam wrapped his arms around Ronan and kissed him again as the carousel came to life and started spitting out bags.
He was so, so glad to be home.

Dan's voice here is so ❤️
Too bad this song isn't officially available on any streaming service (except SoundCloud). Lyrics below the cut ⬇️⬇️⬇️
We can make our heart move in another place
We can touch the ground up in outer space
We can find the sun in another way
We can hold each other for another day
Oh, the way, the sound
The silence is from the mushroom cloud, away from everything
Time to face ourselves
In preparation for the shells to keep us safe from everything
Ten, nine
Eight, seven
Six, five, four
Three, two, one
'Cause when the bomb arrives
There'll be nowhere left to hide
Yeah, when the bomb arrives
There'll be nowhere left to hide
Yeah, when the bomb arrives
There'll be no one left behind
No, no, no one left behind
We should pack our things, hope to get away
We could make our move at the break of day
We should disconnect, no more time to waste
We could ride it out in a distant place
Oh, the way, the sound
The silence is from the mushroom cloud, away from everything
Time to face ourselves
In preparation for the shells to keep us safe from everything
Ten, nine
Eight, seven
Six, five, four
Three, two, one
'Cause when the bomb arrives
There'll be nowhere left to hide
Yeah, when the bomb arrives
There'll be nowhere left to hide
Yeah, when the bomb arrives
There'll be no one left behind
No, no one, no one left behind
We can watch the fire rising up like morning light
We can watch the beam shoot across the evening sky
We can watch the fire rising up like morning light
(Ten, nine)
(Eight, seven)
We can watch the beam shoot across the evening sky
(Six, five, four)
(Three, two, one)

Idea time! group of young liaisons doing their work but one of them started to sing I Want It That Way by the backstreet boys and soon the whole skit of Brooklyn Nine-Nine I want it that way being acted out by them
Omg my favorite joke of all time
Well....
Rodimus sings along, probably from the start, because he loves this song. Swerve would be one of the only bots to join him unprompted, but they'd have a lot of fun jamming out with their little humans. They both know the scene by heart. Rodimus can't put his finger on why, but he likes to think does a really good Peralta impression.
Ultra Magnus happens to be passing by and he's... confused. What is happening? Why are they singing? Why is the Captain joining in? Where did he go wrong?? How can he reach these children???
Whirl is awed by their power and wants to learn more, specifically about the Backstreet Boys.
When the initial laughter dies down, it's decided that a Brooklyn Nine-Nine watch party is in order. The bar will be packed, the snacks will be plentiful, and the quoted jokes will be endless. No one can stop talking about how Ultra Magnus needs to say "THE FULL BULLPEN" and he's so incredibly baffled.
