I'm so happy you loved it! 💚💕🥰 I can't explain to you just how much this fic just took hold of me and kept going and going, and the different routes kept changing too. I really love how it turned out 🥰

I especially loved incorporating little things YN learned along in her adventures, such as lock picking and self defense. Dawny caring for YN was planned from the get go, but Baul appearing later on came about later. Which I love because I like to mess with him too.

"You said you would be in my future." and "You better keep that promise." lines is what drove this fic. It's what I knew I wanted to add and have it center around with YN and Lilia. Another fun fact: "I will be" and "I will." are purposely written that way, but Lilia doesn't realize exactly what that means yet and ahhhh, I just adore the little intricacies.

Meleanor being the older sibling she is and just making fun of him is hilarious. She knew he would be fine and would come back eventually. He is too stubborn to die. Lilia is trying his best not to smack talk back, he still has wounds that are almost healed after all.

I love how Levan is in the fan club. He's the one out here supporting his OTP and wants to know the whole tea, especially seeing how Lilia is obviously infatuated with this girl.

Levan was already interested in YN because of the fact that Lilia was interested in her and she 'proposed' to him like his wife did. But what really got his interest was the fact that Lilia sounded jealous.

Lilia, the wild cat, this overly arrogant fellow General. He's jealous and he's jealous of another human nonetheless. Oh, how interesting this all is.

(I can imagine Levan internally laughing his head off when he realizes the competitor for YN is the Knight of Dawn. Also, I can see Levan now think of ways this Human Vs Fae war can be stopped, so Lilia can pursue his love life 🥹😂)

ContraHero: OTP of all time, literally akmskdidkdkdkejd. The way Contrarian mellows out in strange beginnings and how fond Hero seems to be of that. And I also think they balance out each other really well, with Hero keeping Contra grounded and reminding them their efforts to be more responsible aren’t in vain and with Contra reminding Hero that he can loosen up and have fun. And also how Hero being agency and Contra being individuality and how that fits together and how they both can make up the heart and AAAAAAAHHHHH. (I am insane about these two). Uh, headcanon: Hero calls Contra sunflower and Contra calls him buttercup <3

ParaCold: Secondary OTP. You WILL see them in most of my works lol. Just. the way they balance each other out and how Cold can help Paranoid stay calm and focused and Paranoid reminding Cold his emotions do affect him, how they constantly challenge each others view, pushing the other to grow and be better URGH. Headcanon: Cold can easily pick Paranoid up, and likes doing it just for the heck of it. Paranoid is always Confused by that happening, but also doesn’t mind it.

Ghost Lily | Witch/Spectre: The princess ship I most invested in tbh aoksskdkmx. Not quite an OTP, but getting there, I feel like. Just. Think about it. Spectre’s honest and understanding nature would very easily get through (heh) all of Witch’s walls, and I can see them bonding after a while of hissing and scratching at the fuckin’ ghost haunting her! They’re also both very witty and somewhat playful and. just imagine the banter iamsdkmdkkdmekd. Headcanon: Once their relationship develops enough, Witch offers to let Spectre possess her so that she can feel real sensations for 5 minutes (and 5 minutes only!).

Skeptunist: Hear me out– Skeptic might just be the only person who could poke and prod at Oppy’s 457 masks with gentleness and understanding so that he doesn’t completely fall apart at the prodding. I can see Oppy slowly becoming more comfortable in Skeptic’s presence and even beginning to appreciate all his quirks and traits besides being ‘the smart guy’. Headcanon: Oppy almost cries during their first kiss.

Bare Root | Thorn/Wounded Wild: I don’t necessarily see them as a romantic pair, but I need to talk about these two, they occupy a special spot in my brain. Just. IMAGINE. A burned down forest that was once the Wild, now left to wilt and rot and she can’t do anything about it. In comes Thorn, who’s just seeing if there’s anything worth saving in what seems like wasteland and finds Wild instead. She immediately goes to her, sympathizing with her position as stuck in a bunch of dying roots, and helps her get out and takes her to another, younger but healthy, forest. One they tend after and help grow together. Just. IMAGINE. Headcanon: Wild is the one who named Thorn ‘Poppy’ and Thorn calls her ‘Lady Nature’.

in the anime the only internal monologue we get is from jearmin, which is a big rewatch tell of oh shit! why are reiner's thoughts private (armored hehe). but the ONE time, ONE time we get reiner's thoughts in this arc in the manga... it's about jean. and it's not like he takes over narration like armin did when he encounters annie alone, or like jean does once these three meet up. it's just one stray 💭 of "jean really... is different."

sure, other characters note jean's maturity since joining the corps, but recognition from reiner stands out here as a vote of confidence from marcel!reiner, AND four years later: when he still describes jean as "an irresponsible jerk who only ever thought of himself," even though reiner knows first hand that jean grew so, so much after trost. and it's his fault.

i previously posted SASAMI's I Was a Window, but another one that screams reijean to me is Till Death by Japanese Breakfast. briefly, it's about marriage, but she wrote a whole book about the context that this song and her relationship come from, which i highly recommend.

so many images in it are so post-rumbling to me: "get these days to go by like the swaying of a ship," (the studio recording starts with ocean sounds); "sing me to sleep, soothe this insomnia"; "your embrace healing my wounds / teach me to breathe, teach me to move." the beginning of verse 2, "steering on hostile waves of panic, like fighting a wheel that pulls to the right" makes me think of a later jbrekkie song, Slide Tackle, which IS reiner.

from shiganshina with love by @fromriches-tosin: this is really the one that lured me in. it feels like a locked room, three-hander play, when even being in the wide open air (well, not reiner) is claustrophobic because two characters are intertwined and dug into one another. and as someone who has inhaled shelves' worth of eruri fic and doujinshi, vee's levi is one of my favorites.

i binged the anime so late, just in time for season 4, and when the finale came out i could hardly think of anything other than "we're scouts, we don't know when to quit."

back in my day (i'm turning 27 this month), one dude beating up another in shounen launched a ship, a fleet of ships, and kept it afloat for years, but yams gave us their more obvious, huge interactions in the last... fifteen chapters. but there's so much history between them that screams to be noticed on initial reread and rewatch: the reijearmin (horrendous throuple name) date that was the female titan arc, that jean keeps his cool when the 104th hop on the armored as reibert and ymir try to flee, the whole return to shiganshina, the echo i come back to of "the jean kirchstein i know only thinks of himself."

with jean's OVA, they're the characters whose moms we see the most of besides carla jaeger??? the difference between karina and jean's mother is vast, yet their sons turned out so similar, despite it all. so caring, so haunted by that care. jean takes his leadership in the post-time skip survey corps so seriously, he agonizes over his field leadership in trost, while reiner feels like he killed marcel and bertolt and doomed annie, and in his lowest, lowest moments still manages to protect and worry for falco and gabi.

musings upon the good ship nwalin

as I was walking the dog earlier, I was thinking about my original OTP and how very much I adore contrasting Nori and Dwalin against each other

They’re both survivors. Erebor fell to Smaug, Azanulbizar stole even more of their people’s lives away, and they survived it. But the way they have done so is different:

Dwalin has his deep and unwavering loyalty to Thorin, to his family, and to his people. With their people wounded and scattered, he has his pride and his honor. His honor and loyalty are even more important when their people have so little else. They have their spirit when everything else has been taken from them. Dwalin has looked at devastation and said ‘there are things worth dying for’.

Nori’s focus is much smaller than Dwalin’s, I think, much more insular. He is every bit as fiercely loyal as Dwalin, but only just to himself and his immediate family. He has seen his family struggle, and decided ‘take anything you can get when you can get it’ and ‘do anything it takes to survive’. He’ll cheerfully lie, cheat, steal, and go so far as murder because honor means nothing when you’re hungry.

They inevitably clash with their disparate world views, but really, neither one of them is wrong

At their best they help ease each other’s rigid beliefs. Nori can learn to trust that he has people at his back, and get out of the immediate-survival mindset to widen his fierce loyalty to more than three. He can accept that it’s not always ‘us vs them’ and that collaboration and community are possible. Dwalin can be more flexible, less rule-bound, and be a person instead of trying to be everything a Dwarf is because there is nothing else. He doesn’t have to shoulder the weight of all Dwarfdom alongside Thorin. He can just be.

I just love them so much, and will never be over them. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

The strong implication that Phineas is Gloria’s actual son is also good to know. A friend and I had been theorizing that Theo and Saoirse’s father was the son of a previous wife, but at least now we know Phineas is Gloria’s, whether by direct blood or strong affection. Enough to the point that Phineas calls her “eomoni” when he’s exasperated.

Charles's laughter was softer. He didn't need her to protect him, though he appreciated the thought. Just her presence was enough.

There was music, of course, something low and electronic and pulsing, and the air smelled of alcohol and cigarette smoke and sweat and leather. It was overwhelming, and Charles tried not to breathe it in too deeply lest it choke him. There were more people than he would've liked, too, but if St. Cecilia could behave at industry parties for him, he could be here for her. She'd promised to make it worth his while, anyway. He asked, his voice almost lost beneath the music, "You come here often, Miss Jameson?"

"Before you, yeah." It wasn't hard to imagine. With her dark jeans and leather jacket and heart-shaped pasties in place of a shirt, St. Cecilia looked like she belonged here. He'd never seen her blend in before; She usually stood out. He wound an arm around her waist, pulling her close as they stepped farther inside, through the dancing lights and the smoke, towards the bar.

There was a big man in a leather harness behind said bar, and he grinned and asked, "Your usual, Miss Offdensen?"

Though St. Cecilia tried to cover it with a hasty, "Yes, please!," Charles was soon smiling, too.

"Miss Offdensen?" he echoed, something like pride and possession bubbling up in his chest. "I thought you didn't plan to change your name?"

"Well, why not?" she shot back, though the indignation was clearly a farce. She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, her golden eyes on anything that wasn't him. "Maybe I like the sound of it."

Charles didn't fail to notice how, even in the smoke and the dazzling lights of the club, her blush was obvious.

Snuggling is mandatory.

Children:

How many children will they have naturally? - if they can conceive though magic, one. Janai would carry, as she would believe it her duty as queen to carry the heir. Amaya would do most of the early childcare though, to allow Janai to reclaim her strength and her queenly duties :)

How many children will they adopt? - They formally adopt Callum and Ezran after their wedding, not forcing them to live with them or anything but to solidify the unity between their kingdoms and to ensure Callum and Ezran can always have motherly figures. (Amaya basically adopted them after Sarai's death and loves them like her own, they just make it official.) They also, while informally, adopt Soren. He isn't technically their son, but he's much younger than either of them and never really had stable parents, so they assume that role :) He accidentally called Janai "mom" once and she cried to Amaya about it for hours because she was so grateful he looked up to her.

Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - Again, Amaya does most of the early childcare, so her. But she's a firm believer in early potty-training because she dealt with Callum and Ezran when they were little and no way in hell she's doing that again

Who is the stricter parent? - Amaya seems scary, but she's such a caring mom. Janai tries to enforce rules, but doesn't believe in punishments, just corrective behavior. Both of them have the mental development of kiddo in mind, and they collaborate on everything :) the worst punishments for their daughter are NEVER more than a reprimand and some very thoughtful discussion.

Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - Big bro Soren! Once kiddo's old enough to do school, Mum is back to being full-time Queen, and Mom is back to being the head General! So Soren babysits and teaches them how to properly do dangerous shit, and stops them from doing anything that will seriously hurt her

Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - Amaya would actually chuck somebody out the window if her kid doesn't eat all 3 meals, so either SHE does it, or she instructs a handmaiden to do so (if her and Janai can't make it home on very rare occasions)

Who is the more loved parent? - Both have pros and cons :) Amaya is the "fun one" and she loves to joke around, but Janai is the queen of pep-talks and really well-needed hugs. (janai is a better hugger, but only ever hugs her family so everybody assumes amaya's the more physically affectionate)

Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings?- ... Soren. Amaya would get frustrated ith not being able to properly read lips froma a distance / not having an interpretor, and Janai can't sit through those meetings without getting pissed that her kid isn't getting the accommodations she needs. Soren's used to doing PTA stuff because he (secretly) volunteered at the school to get out of his house as a kid (viren is a shitty dad)

Who cried the most at graduation? - Amaya would UGLY CRY at anybody's graduation, especially her kid's or nephews' or Soren's. Janai would be proud, and make sure the kid knows this, while Amaya just fuckin sobs

Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - Janai's the queen, so she'd get them out of trouble but make them do community service and help with whatever they did. Unless it was completely justified, in which case, she'd be a proud mum. Amaya would commit a crime for her kids, so. She'd be the one in trouble. Getting her kids out of trouble. And Janai would just sigh and let her go because that's her wife right there.

Cooking: 

Who does the most cooking? - The handmaidens, Janai never really learned because she was busy and always had somebody to do it for her, and Amaya can't cook for shit. She'll eat just about anything from her army days, so she doesn't care to make it taste good. And no way Janai will allow her wife to eat terrible food. Plus the Sunfire elves use more spices and have different cultural ways to eat it than members of Katolis, so she shows her traditional Sunfire cuisine and Amaya goes NUTS because it tastes so good :) Amaya can make a mean sandwich though

Who is the most picky in their food choice? - Janai. She's used to being catered to, and has specific things she likes and doesn't. And Amaya would eat a stick of butter covered in dirt if it was what she got served

Who does the grocery shopping? - Handmaidens shop for all the dinner/formal meal food, because they do the cooking, but Amaya shops for fresh produce for snacks and informal meals, and goes to the baker's once or twice a week for fresh bread :) she actually secretly loves domestic errands

How often do they bake desserts? - Amaya loves sweets, so she usually gets a few pastries when she's at the baker's. And if her nephews are home, it's jelly tarts every day

Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Both love a good chunk of meat. Janai doesn't eat some due to cultural reasons, but isn't a huge fan of vegetables. Amaya likes the textures in salads and vegetables in general. She's a happy girl if she has any food though

Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - Janai is the hopeless romantic in the relationship, so she goes all-out for anniversaries. Sunfire elves don't traditionally celebrate those, but her years with Amaya are precious and will eventually draw to a close. (elves live much longer than humans usually. janai tries not to think about that though)

Favorite thing about them: I love it whenever he's allowed to be a bit of a massive bitch. When ACD lets him be petty and mean, such as when he decided to arbitrarily dislike Doulgas' wife because she was laughing with another man just a few days after his death. It gives him such a clear personality flaw, and yet one that I can't really make fun of all that much because I also act like that. Gives him a personality, even if he barely focuses on himself when he writes.

Least favorite thing about them: He's more of a writing tool than a character sometimes, to the point where there are instances where he just speaks and speaks about other people and just downplays himself. There are times in which I wish he could've shown more character, such as when Holmes comes back from the dead and his only damn reaction is passing out and then afterwards everything's okay immediately like bro where's your fucking anger where's your rage

brOTP: Surprisingly enough, I don't really have one with him. While I do believe that there's a lot of potential in pairing, for example, Sherlock Holmes with Isa Whitney (from Man With a Twisted Lip), where the two of them can help each other heal from their addictions, I don't see anyone in the canon who could have a similar role in Watson's life. Perhaps I would if Doyle explored his relationship with Stanford, Phelps, Thurston, and the two doctors that were willing to take care of his practice in the canon. Sigh

OTP: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson/Mary Morstan, but like all variations of it. Holmes and Watson being queerplatonic, and Watson and Mary banging. The two of them sharing Watson because he has two hands. Lavender marriage. They just work.

serious argument: bellroc. both are aware of their feelings and both unafraid to acknowledge them, but bellroc in particular is prone to talking around things—or at least it appears so to outsiders—or to simply being Done, haha. if they pull out this card, they're really at the end of their rope—they would mean it, deeply, and wouldn't invoke it unless they were really at the end of their patience. unserious argument: skrael, 100%, oh my god. all the time. for the stupidest possible things. (it won't win bellroc over every time, but...probably more often than they'd want to admit.)

initially, yes. (i'm writing mainly early days stuff now, and...yeah. Yeah.) they meet each other at a point where neither are at their best, and on top of the fact they initially don't share a language they come at big questions from more or less opposite world experiences. bellroc has never had magic, skrael has always had it, but never this much; bellroc is an optimist, skrael is not; bellroc cuts the knot, skrael (often) unpicks it. but as they get to know each other, and particularly, as they get to better know themselves in each other's company—once bellroc really learns magic, enough to be comfortable with it, once they both start talking about how they want to spend their lives, with all this fondness and power and obligation—such arguments tend to disappear. not that they never disagree—i think they do, and sometimes quite strongly—but that they know better how the other speaks, they know the attitudes and pre-suppositions they're working with. after a certain point: it's never me vs. you, it's the only side i'm on is ours; how can we solve this problem, together? as to how they smooth things over...? hm. for bellroc: deliberate, direct, painstaking explanation. much as it galls: genuine apology, sincerely offered, if they were in the wrong. (or accepting such apology, conversely.) skrael i think would be more oblique, especially compared to how he usually is. he's never above flattery (and bellroc is very susceptible), but while he'd straight up apologize sometimes i think he'd much more often offer gifts or favors without an immediate connection. he can count the people whose opinion of him he cares about on one hand; he's not used to feeling contrite, if that opinion threatens (however unlikely) to sour.

do you know, i think neither of them would sort of—jump to throw down the gauntlet, so to speak? not because they don't care, but simply because there are so few insults they would take as genuine threats—or would want to acknowledge as such. both of them would be very aware that the other is perfectly capable of defending their own honor. 99% of the time, it's hardly worth the time. (the one exception to this is when i've imagined skrael after killahead, where he very badly wants revenge. but even then he holds himself back, even in the depths of all his wrath, because the thought occurs to him: bellroc needs this more than me.)

skrael argues he is always spiritually jumping in an elevator "bc floaty powers." Ozlem and the romances

Every now and then I go down the rabbit hole of thinking about intertextual influences on R/WBY and then I end up debating with myself how seriously to take Rhodopis, because Rhodopis pretty majorly changes things regarding my OTP. I think I have arrived at a reasonable conclusion which should - and this is the reason I'm writing this - give myself relief. It's a pretty organic conclusion too, because I've otherwise said as much in the past - allusions only matter insofar as they intensify R/WBY's storytelling, not the other way around.

Yeah so this is true for the romances, and Ozlem is the thing motivating the romances - I mean this in the most concrete way, more than I've said as much before in terms of thematic stakes. The allusions in the romances - if used at all - are crafted only insofar as Ozlem matters, because that's the story proper. We know they knew what caused the moon to shatter very early on in the show, so it's probably likely to some degree they knew what was going on with Salem (she was the fifth created character if I recall correctly), but whether the planned canon romances reflect Ozlem or Ozlem reflects the planned canon romances, it doesn't really matter. All stories evolve, and I'm pretty sure the basic roadmap with Salem was clear all along; you can't kill her. I'm only writing this out because I think it's worth thinking about when people want to say that R/WBY isn't 'intentional'; it's a serial work but it's not a serial work without intentions. It's not rocket science.

A case study here might be Ruby and Oscar, where the popular frame of reference I see for the ship (as a relative outsider) is that the Little Prince (obvious influence with Oscar) loved a rose. I think they specifically built his character in mind with The Little Prince because of its thematic resonance with R/WBY (if you haven't read The Little Prince, you ought to) which appropriately fitted in with a romance with Ruby, as a consequence of Ozlem. I think it's most obvious that a redeeming romance of Ozlem involving Ozma's final reincarnation is going to happen one way or another, and Ozma himself is the chief obstacle to that relationship (outside of Ruby's own emotional/spiritual development and mother wound). The key here is Ozlem, not that you can solely reason for Ruby/Oscar based off of The Little Prince - because it is really easy to start arguing in one direction or another with the allusions and rely on them too much without considering why they're being used.

For a much more obviously canon ship which is not a point of speculation anymore at all, Blake/Yang more obviously redeems Ozlem than Blake/Sun ever did (if you even want to bring that into the argument here). Beauty and Beast realises and reprises fundamental themes of Ozlem (seeing past the exterior/compassion valued as idealism/spiritual beauty/complicated stuff surrounding towers and imprisonment and freedom, I'm thinking of the unicorn on a leash here, and everything to do with the God of Light lol) and I think there's a reason that the first True Love's Kiss in the show was between Beauty and Beast and that Beauty and the Beast is the romance allusion of two main cast members. It's clearly been afforded real consideration (it is not a cynical realisation of BatB like it's often twisted) and gives us an emotional roadmap as to how the romances should work (the fact they translated the Beast's physical imprisonment into emotional imprisonment means they understand the core message of BatB). But I don't think the sole argumentation for Blake and Yang is Beauty and the Beast (and I would argue that of what I remember of the fandom from Beacon era, this wasn't the only angle they took) but rather that it hits the reprisal of the Ozlem feud (Adam and an emotional imprisonment/curse, allegiances to greater powers, working back from painful abandonment, etc.). I would certainly say the BatB is feeding into Ozlem or vice versa, and it's probably hard to delineate where one begins and one ends, but it's impossible to read why Blake/Yang works so well without Ozlem in my estimation.

Ren/Nora, by virtue, actually gets intense once there's a real confrontation of motivations and self-individuation. They're the lotus, which grows in mud, and is similarly to BatB about a relationship between beauty and ugliness, and so this is similarly reprising that thematic idea of from wholeness comes brokenness... which is why I believe the prominence of Nora's scarring is tied to a love confession (this idea of love and pain is related, I think, and pain and growth; it's very Wound of Love, you have drunk your death, if by my death you mean this agony of love etc.). To this relationship the allusions of Thor and Mulan don't actually matter as much - the symbolic idea of the lotus (pink/green) seems like a bigger idea here, which is much like Emerald/Mercury (Emerald Tablet and Mercury). But despite the fact I've never been able to identify anything outside of the lotus for the ship, I think very few would argue against this ship, and I think its development has been written in respect to Ozlem (confronting disguised feelings actually feels like foreshadowing for future Ozlem development).

It's impossible for me to read any of these relationships without Ozlem; they're metaphorical reincarnations in the story realising, reprising and redeeming it, and no matter what allusions are at play they're beholden to what the romance is actually achieving character- and plot-wise, and both character- and plot-wise Ozlem is a huge deal. Salem's the lead villainess, Ozma is the resident bad wizard along for the ride: however the story eventually finishes, it's going to involve some sort of confrontation between the two, and it would never happen without the main cast. This is the cycle breaker and they're all examples of how it could be 'fixed'.

It's not necessarily going to be pitch-perfect, since the broader ideas of Ozlem are pretty gestural and most of it's pretty Jungian and mythically loaded - and so I don't know if you could, say, exactly predict a relationship solely through how it is or isn't Ozlem---

This is the bit I keep coming back to, because so far I can make the case for Ozlem motivating the canon romances (yay structural poetry) and then I get to this point and I'm not sure what to do because I do think the allusions are made more intelligible this way - no more pointless speculation, let's think about how this services the story - and yeah, Jaune/Pyrrha is akin to Ruby and Penny, there is definitely the experience of Ozma's loss hammered in to the characters (and loss generally as a theme), and then I get to fucking this and I don't know what to do. Because I'm wondering if I'm reasoning backwards - Jaune/Cinder is reverse Ozlem, therefore the romances are Ozlem motivated - but this is literally the only way I've been able to parse what is and isn't relevant when it comes to the allusions and the romances and then further when it comes to the actual plot-related allusions. Jaune is Ruby's Huntsman in V9 insofar as he rescues them all from the Big Bad Wolf but he's Ruby's Huntsman in the sense of Cinder's Huntsman (Rhodes), which is a source of disllusionment - so the work being done here is character-motivated (and Jungian), not solely 'did you get it? It's just like in Red Riding Hood!' That's an example I can think of off the top of my head because it's such a recent example with very specific and successful intentions (particularly contrasted against her disillusionment with her Huntress mother - who wielded an axe - it's actually in this whole same episode/sequence this idea is explored. It's intentional).

I don't know. I can't make a case here for Jaune/Weiss because Jaune/Weiss is like, the Old Man and the Winter Maiden, but almost nothing to it is Ozlem in any way that I can think of but with Jaune/Cinder I have this very in-my-face Ozlem parallel I simply cannot ignore. I've gone over in the past why I think a positive resolution works as opposed to a cautionary tale-esque version of Ozlem. Could Jaune/Weiss be made to fit-to-form? I would expect more meat from it personally since Weiss is a major main cast character and outside of her family if she gets a romance that does a lot of work for her character and the Schnees' legacy (particularly a big deal thematically since Ozlem lost their children, the Maidens are surrogate daughters, Salem's all-in-one vessel is her surrogate daughter/she's an 'evil stepmother' as well as evil fairy godmother). How does any of their conflict answer Ozlem? How does Weiss not taking notice of Jaune for eight volumes answer Ozlem? What does it achieve for their characters? Thematically? Plot-wise? It gets Jaune out of his rut, like Sun got Blake out of her rut. I don't fucking knowwwwww. It's not straightforward the way BB, RG, and even to some degree RN are. Sure - sure - I know - it could just be badly written, last minute, a joke, it could simply break the Ozlem paradigm.

But if the Ozlem paradigm justifies the romances - and no, I'm not arguing here about whether R/WBY is well-written or not with morons who wouldn't know the first thing about basic storytelling - and something breaks that paradigm, irrespective of Jaune being one of Weiss' many Huntsmen (I'm not going to go over this again... Yang is one of Weiss' Huntsman with the other Evil Queen/Maiden Raven, Winter is another Evil Queen, Cinder is an Evil Queen - the Maidens are Queens chess-wise, etc. etc. etc.), I need to know if it's Ozlem motivated. So. What am I to do?

I'm back at the Ozlem in reverse with Jaune/Cinder and Rhodopis.

This ended as a true Jaune/Cinder post. I'm sorry. The romances are Ozlem-motivated. The only conclusion I can come to is that Jaune/Cinder being Ozlem in reverse (lovers to enemies -> enemies to lovers) is relevant. (She's even Grimm-cursed, he was the Old Man in the Four Maidens fairytale with team R/WBY as the Maidens). That's why the Rhodopis - (proto-Cinderella) of Herodotus is freed from her second master (Madame, Salem) by Sappho's (Sapphron's) brother (Jaune). If I were writing a secret, twist romance I would absolutely choose a nested reference within a (found on Wikipedia) version of Cinderella not everybody's aware of which I would gradually seed and reference throughout the show, when it is more concretely beholden to Ozlem. You might say that things don't happen exactly as they do in the allusions - and no, they don't (see the thesis of this post), but specific to Jaune and Cinder is that their enmity is the remix. The twist is the romance and the unlikelihood of Ozlem working back their conflict.

I'm not depending upon anybody to figure out the romance through Rhodopis, but it's a pretty good one if you ask me. Ozlem is the secret history of the world, after all. But you don't need Rhodopis to figure it out. It's all there in the text. It's all Ozlem. It's all Jaune's character, it's all Cinder's character, it's all wounded idealism redeemed. The allusion is there for flavour, if you catch it, the way BatB enhances and justifies Blake/Yang.' i think though that a lot of creators have a misguided relationship to their own fandoms

back in adventure time the creators were very, very, very cagey and only ever responded to questions about the show once every year, the guy in charge adam muto expressly asked the creators to not discuss adventure time, because he knew that anything they said could snowball into some horrible controversy

he was right to have that attitude especially with the situation the show found itself in in 2011 after the mathematical! controversy

the issue is that adventure time's radio silence meant that they couldn't talk, at all, about any queer writing in the show, even new staff members who were really invested in it, and they had a limited capacity to talk about anything else either

but on the other hand i see more modern show writers like matt braly actively starting shit with fans and being weird, of course he's going to get backlash for that!!! he's right for recieving backlash for the recent controversy too. him and his team have done some creepy shit so yeah that's on them. though i wouldn't go so far as to accuse them of crimes, and people absolutely must have done that by now, and they need to calm the fuck down.

related, i was talking to my friend last night about voltron wherein she said that, even she agreed though the votron team were really weird about gay rep, they had started recieving GLASS CUPCAKES in the mail and stuff like that. what kind of fucking psychopath sends some poor artists GLASS CUPCAKES because they didn't like how they handled a cartoon!!! what the fuck!!!!!! if you want to send someone GLASS CUPCAKES go after the US supreme court or something, don't go after random artists because they wrote queerness in their show but were horribly misguided about it?????

and that's the kicker, isn't it? there is no room for mistakes anymore. people make absolute permanent value judgements on each other based on one mistake and assume they can never change and deserve to be hated forever.

if one thing is a bit off the entire thing gets condemned. look at she-ra. theres plenty that she-ra messed up (why the leash jokes???), but when it first aired people tried to say that it was perfect even though it had stuff like that, then when it made decisions that broke away precious OTPs, or when it finished and everyone moved onto the Owl House, people were saying that it's the worst show in the world and should be condemned.

can it not be in between? steven universe was utterly condemned, sure theres a hell of a lot wrong with that show but less from a moral front and more from an overall quality front. there's a ton of stuff in steven universe that is absolutely worth watching. i think that people just like trashing the old show to support the new show and pretend that there is some kind of moral basis for it.

I suppose the HSAU Taro and AkeJun fics aren't my only annual fic - "Matsuyama gets a wound infected and Yoshiko has to wrestle that out of him" is another. 2021 had my first CT fic, "Little Things", serve as a fill for "Infected Wound". 2022 had "Helping Hand", another challenge fic which was a take on traditional H/C, but make it my OTP. And now 2023 has this fic! Wowie kazoowie, mental illness never stops!

I did swerve a bit on the formula by setting this a year after both LT and HH (…not Hungry Heart)... so that's something, I guess?

There are things you learn throughout your life for which it’s worth sucking up your pride and ask for someone else’s help. There’s improving yourself when just doing it on your own isn’t cutting it anymore. There’s asking for help when it involves someone other than you and your skills or knowledge isn’t enough.

And there’s admitting when you’re not doing well. It takes a bold amount of trust in whoever you need to tell that too, a good assessment of one’s limits and – most painfully – an admission of vulnerability that’s not easy for everyone.

The thing is, right now, that’s exactly when he needs to do, but he can’t do it; yet this isn’t even a matter of pride.

He’d guess, for some, it’d be a gigantic bruise to their ego they may never recover from – but for him, it’s not. How do you expect a good team captain to consider admitting to your weaknesses something to be ashamed of? None of your teammates will ever tell you what’s wrong with them if they read on your face disdain and shame about it. Even just for their sake, upholding such a senseless sense of pride wouldn’t be of any use – quite the opposite.

But this isn’t a matter of pride. He isn’t above admitting he needs help. He has before and he will do it until he dies, that’s just how being a human is. He isn’t stupid enough not to know that nor too proud not to recognize that, actually, today’s difficult on him and he’s tired.

He just hates worrying people, man. Every single time he’s unwell, he sees the weight it puts on the shoulders of those who care about him and the way it drags their faces down. He sees how his friends will drop what they’re doing, ask if he’s fine, and never be able to fully focus back on what they were doing before that. All of it, he hates it, because he isn’t worth distracting yourself. He can take care of himself without any issue… most of the time.

A leader has to take on himself, sometimes – well, in his case, it’s most of the time. He treats colds like he’d treat small scrapes and handles it all on his own. The leader, however, is also the one who serves as an example, and for all of his unwillingness to worry people, there’s also an undeniable feeling that he can’t let his teammates follow in his footsteps, in this instance…

Well, if he’s come to this conclusion, it’s ironically because his brain’s much too fuzzy to properly work on anything and the guys have noticed. Oda has said multiple times he’d take care of his workload and he’s noticed Kato very unsubtly assume a role as assistant coach. Neither of them is slick, but he appreciates it, no matter how much his sense of responsibilities and duty is barking at him to get back to work, not to let anyone worry about him.

Not to mention, there’s nobody he wants to confess this crap to. Who even has time for that? He’s supposed to streamline the team’s efforts, not add onto the pile. A pair of hands is never too much around here, not when there’s snow to shovel away and strategies to brainstorm. All in all, no, there’s nobody he should be telling this stuff about.

Well… that’s not entirely accurate. There is one person he’d be willing to talk to about this. Unfortunately, it happens to be the one person he’d rather not worry at all, because of all people he knows, she’s the one who’s plenty concerned for him already on a good day, perhaps even more so than his parents because she isn’t too used to him yet.

Fujisawa has become perhaps not the centre of his life, but saying she’s half his heart is pretty accurate. The fact they’re even both dating is somewhat of a miracle, because he’s rough and while she’s solid as steel, she’s also soft to the touch and not the sort who likes rubbing elbows and getting dirty. He does love the parts of her who will get her hands dirty and do it, fix what needs to be fixed, without a complaint. Oh, that’s part of why he doesn’t want to burden her with worry, her natural compassion, her strive to take care of issues and the inability to speak of her feelings if she feels they’d also be a burden… (They’re kind of made for each other, in that sense, huh?).

But you know what his parents have always told him? That a husband and a wife are always here for each other – and if they’re not married (they’re sixteen, give them some time dammit)

So there he is, inside the clubroom, holding onto an aching arm that’s not stopped causing him issues for a couple days – hey, maybe it’s part of the issue, actually.

“Hey, Fujisawa,” he says without any real intonation.

She turns around almost immediately, the unhappy expression on her face all but confirming she has noticed something was off before he could even tell her about it.

“Oh, it’s you, Matsuyama,” she greets him. “What can I do for you?”

“Can I… ask you something a bit private?”

The flush that comes to her face, oh so quickly, is beyond endearing. He’s really down bad, but also, isn’t that the point?

“Of course.”

He gets closer to her, to the point where he can start counting her hairs.

“See, I’m a bit, uh… I’m a bit loopy, today.” Yeah that sounds accurate. “By that, I mean, uh… I don’t feel so good.”

He’s pretty sure confessing his feelings to her was less difficult. Even now, he doesn’t really want any of this.

“I thought you were feeling off,” she replies in a tendre tone. “Can I take your rtemperature to check something?”

“Oh, sure, go for it.”

He expects her to get a thermometer from the first-aid kit under the desk; but all she does is tiptoe to his height, push his hair out of the way and put a hand on his forehead. The contact is enough to make him have to repress a chill – it’s not a bad feeling, far from it, just a little overwhelming.

“You do have a fever, I’m pretty sure,” she tells him as she recovers her normal footing.

“Ah, crap, that doesn’t sound good.”

Her eyes slide to his left arm.

“Is your wound not getting any better?”

“Ah, uh… No, it doesn’t seem to. I dunno why, maybe I’ve done something wrong when I dressed it….?”

“Can I check it?”

“Oh, sure! Sure.”

He tends his arm so she can easily unwrap the bandage… or try to, because as it turns out, she has trouble taking off his skin, the damn fabric sticking to the wound. There’s fresh blood just peeking through the worst of it and the stench – oh, he forgot how much this thing stinks.

“It’s gotten infected,” she verbally recoils as she announces it. “That’d explain your fever pretty well…”

He forgot to disinfect the thing the other day. Goddammit, that didn’t sound too hard to do too.

“Oh, yeah, that makes sense.”

Fujisawa frets a little, looking around, before settling on him back again.

“Can you sit down, please? I’ll take care of it, but I need you to sit still as I do.”

“No worries.” He takes a seat right where she needs him to be. “You’re sure you don’t mind, though? I could do that myself or just ask the nurse.”

“No, it’s fine, I’ve learned to do it. Plus…” She blushes again, right as she opens the first-aid kit. “I want to do it for you.”

“Then go for it.” He watches her prepare the operation with undenied fondness in his eyes. “Thank you so much, Fujisawa.”

“Don’t fret it. Now, I apologize, but it’s going to sting a little…”

A dab of water on the wound just to wash it does remind him to be more careful, next time.

Day 45: Stabbed

Draco loved the chase.

It was one of his favorite things about being an auror, dashing after criminals, Harry racing along beside him. He loved the chase and the duels, heart pumping, and adrenaline racing through his veins.

Chasing down Calvin this afternoon was no exception.

He was just a few paces ahead of Harry as he rounded the corner after Calvin. He drew up short, surprised to find that Calvin hadn't kept running, but was instead standing just around the corner with his silver blade, that he probably used to make positions, poised to be plunged into someone's body.

To say he was shocked to be stabbed (when they had wands and magic available to them) would be an understatement.

But Calvin did in fact stab him and there was a flash of vindictive glee before Harry was around the corner and casting a quick incarcerous.

"You stabbed me," Draco said, uncomprehendingly as he staggered backwards and started to fall.

Harry caught him and lowered him to the ground. "Oh Godric," Harry gasped and Draco looked up at him to see that his face was completely drawn with panic, he could see his pulse thundering in the vein in his neck.

He started to reach for the knife, intent on pulling it out and casting a quick episkey to heal it but Harry batted his hand away.

"No! Don't touch it."

"But-" Draco started.

Harry shook his head frantically, "No buts. The knife is stopping the blood flow," he said as he pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and transfigured it before pressing it against Draco's wound.

"Ow, Potter," he hissed. "Fuck. Just let me-"

"No!" he said, shaking his head again. "No. I'm not letting you die." He shot off a patronus to ask for help and hit Calvin with a stunner, which brought Draco a bit of glee.

"Let me take the knife out-" he tried again.

"No," Harry replied, holding him tighter and it was nice, Draco thought, worth being stabbed to be held in Harry's arms. If it wasn't for the pain he might have been able to pretend that Harry cared for him the way Draco cared for Harry. "Stay with me, alright?"

"Yes, but-"

"You can't die, Draco," Harry whispered, his eyes filling with tears. "I need you," he added. "And I'm in love with you and I won't have you dying until I've had a chance to tell you."

"You're in love with me?" he squeaked.

Harry nodded, "Yes. Now save your strength, it's going to be okay."

"Harry," he said, "Pull the knife out and-"

"No!"

"Listen to me," he said, reaching up to cup Harry's cheek in his palm and direct Harry's eyes to his. "Listen to me," he repeated. "Pull the knife out and cast an episkey. This isn't a life threatening wound if you don't let me bleed out."

Harry blinked, like for a moment he'd forgotten that healing spells existed. "Episkey," he said, "Right. Of course." He reached down and pulled the knife out, Draco hissed. "Sorry," the other man murmured with a wince before casting a quick episkey.

He let out a little relieved sigh as the pain subsided. "Thank you," he said.

Harry just nodded, refusing to meet his eye.

"Hey," he murmured. "Look at me."

"I just panicked," Harry said.

Draco couldn't help his smile, "It's adorable that when you panic, you tell me that you love me and can't live without me."

"Forget it," Harry said, starting to pull away.

Turning a bit in Harry's arms so that he had better leverage and said, "I don't want to forget it," before pressing a soft kiss to Harry's lips.

"Really?" Harry breathed.

"Yeah," Draco replied before catching his lips again, fingers sliding into Harry's curls as he angled their heads.

A groan interrupted their rather perfect kiss and Draco looked up to see Ron standing there. "Seriously? Harry sent an SOS."

"He forgot that we're wizards and can heal minor stab wounds."

"I panicked!" Harry said, his arms still wrapped around Draco. "I panicked and my brain restored factory settings."

Draco blinked at him, "I've no idea what that means." But he couldn't be arsed to care as his eyes from wandered to Harry's lips once more.

"Well, before you two go back to whatever it was you were doing," Ron said, "I'm just going to take Calvin back to the DMLE and you two should go to St. Mungo's and make sure that you're alright." They watched as Ron cast a quick leviosa, to lift Calvin off the ground. "And you should probably just take the day after that," he added. "Just to be safe. I'll let Robards know."

"You're a good friend, Ron Weasley," Harry called after him.

"I know," Ron replied before apparating away.

Draco stood and pulled Harry up off the ground with him. "So, St. Mungos," he said, "And then what should we do?"

The corner of Harry's mouth tilted up, "Oh, I'm sure we'll think of something."
