Reaction to The Devil Judge (spoilers for ep. 11-12)

Hello everyone! I hope you’re doing well this week!

Here we go! Again i’m really sorry for the english & my personal interpretations which might go a little bit overboard (❁´ω`❁)

- Huckleberryfinn’s new OST, The Nights, was released this saturday and it’s truly a gem! The guitar/bass’s place in BOTH OSTs they composed is awesome. The lyrics destroyed me haha (i’ll shortly talk about it below!). The soundtrack during these two episodes was awesome btw ;;

- Sun-Ah’s visit to the mansion felt nostalgic and shattering at the same time, she sees she doesn’t belong in this house but still indulges a little in this illusion, « wanting to fall for his trick even just for a little while ». Her expression made me feel for her for a little while too ;;

This shot above is funny because the bokeh effect (✨ the little sparkles ✨) is used in the background every time but this time it plays in front of Sun-Ah’s view: she sees in Yohan and his mansion a « shining » thing she desired for a long time. The bokeh here served also as a transition to the flashback right after.

Well, it could just be the streetlights’ reflections on the car and me reaching but there are so many symbolic visual shots in this show already i just couldn’t dismiss it in my brain haha

I liked Sun-Ah’s depiction of her choice to go against Yohan: she drops the necklace (symbolizing Yohan, this scene followed by Yohan’s cross-like scar) and not herself, like she did in the past for/because of Yohan when she was a maid + Yohan’s reflection disappears, Sun-Ah only focusing on herself: the ‘us’ she wanted for some time disappeared. And this event makes Sun-Ah’s rage on K more upsetting than it already is, but maybe i’m reaching haha

This scene also shows Yohan and Sun-Ah want two different directions to their relationship: to use her and to have him reach the top by her side respectively. They both look at the mirror, but their focus is different and they’re set in different plans on the shots.

In My Mister, (SPOILERS) the wife has a serious affair with her husband’s superior, but throughout the drama, they have divergent opinions on their affair’s developments: the wife wanted to leave her husband and settle with her lover, while the latter didn’t think any of it and, among other plot reasons, only wanted her because married women are the ‘safest choice (ending the relationship while she still loves him would be more troublesome) and always kept the affair secret’.

This was particularly symbolized by their song preferences, but also by this shot in the beginning of the series: after the wife shared her hopes about their relationship (and her lover staying most of the time silent), they both look to the distance (their affair’s metaphorical future) but their eyes almost never look in the same direction.

- « I did it because i need you (by my side?) », Sun-Ah and Gaon’s parallels:

"[To Gaon on ep. 8] I wanted you to be by my side.”

“[To Gaon on ep. 5] I don’t need you to understand, but you need to make a decision. Will you stand in my way … or stand on my side?”

"[To Gaon] If i needed to, i would’ve done something even worse. Whether it was switching him or something else.”

- When Elijah and Gaon play jenga, Yohan might have let the door to his bedroom open (even after leaving them the first time) to continue hearing them have fun in the living room. It parallels to the scene in ep. 5 where he watches them play in the garden with Kkomi through the little gap of his curtains: what piques his curiosity first is the playful conversation he hears from his bed even from the closed windows. The flashback explains it all and i’m glad Gaon insisted to have him play with them despite the front he tried to put on, Elijah’s and Yohan’s expressions in this scene ended me ;;

Look how quick he turned his attention to Gaon, as if he waited for something to happen, to get to play with them!! His eyes lit up in an instant i can’t with this —

I loved how Yohan delayed his defeat to Elijah by asking Gaon questions about the game hahah

Elijah and Yohan’s relationship growth here reminds me of 2 parallels i didn’t catch the first time (but the desperation i felt when Gaon left because everything could grow cold again between Elijah and Yohan):

Elijah getting in & out of the car (ep. 6-9):

- And Gaon’s « Once everything is over, i’ll definitely … » — you’ll definitely what, please tell the audienceeeeeeee ;;;; this screams a death flag for Soohyun (or was it just foreshadowing their confrontation in ep. 12? idek anymore haha), but let’s hope it’s not!!

- After CKH’s suicide: we can’t expect people to make perfect choices every time they are challenged, and i think this story shows it well: Soohyun when she was with Elijah, and now Gaon carelessly touching the minister’s body for the files. As judges, they could have searched the body and the room using a fabric to hide their presence. But they’re both shocked: Yohan looks dumbfounded, standing and watching (even though he’s quicker to react when he sees Soohyun and he puts on a composure at the house saying it was ‘nothing’, he looked very sour when Sun-Ah called him to rejoice in her death) and Gaon panic-stricken. The fact he might have relived his parents’ suicide when he discovered the Minister’s body … And in the worst way possible (in a daze, searching her dead body for her files and realizing he didn’t give the body minimum respect) … oof

At least Yohan could have thought about it since the story shows how prepared he is in his plans, but this scene shows even him is at a loss at what to do. After all, the minister was the way he targeted to bring everyone linked to the foundation down. They were so close, i think he was too convinced her « self-pity » would mean her survival despite everything (« Do you have any other options? ») to see what was coming. After all, when they last met, he saw she was about to shoot him.

Sun-Ah was the only one he thought was ‘unpredictable’. When Gaon talked to CKH, he let him speak and approved his speech, surely thinking everything went along his plans and the minister would surrender. And i think that’s also why he gives Gaon all this speech, to reassure himself and them, since they work now as a team.

- Ep. 9 foreshadowing ep. 11 and 12 (Soohyun facing Yohan and Gaon). It’s interesting how the two shots from ep. 9 seem to put on the same plan the three characters, as if Yohan is literally standing between Soohyun and Gaon, as if he was the one protecting/separating him from Soohyun. This is very telling of the whole dynamic between those three.

- When the minister said she didn’t want to clear her name regarding her son in the live but still does so anyway, this is pure preterition haha! It’s also why she reminds the public opinion the first case Yohan handled!

- Cha Kyung Hee’s demise (ep. 11-4 parallels):

(+ a cinematographic reference to the 2000 movie Malèna, which was recently used in Hwasa’s MV for the song Maria)

- The scene right after where Soohyun wipes Gaon’s involvement to the suicide was moving in regards to her character, we get to see how torn she is by this situation + when she faces off Yohan in the parking (and the ‘let go’ could also have referred to Gaon) … i felt bad for her!

- About Soohyun & the professor: I find interesting the way the professor and Soohyun shelter Gaon’s existence was clearly shown with these two episodes and through their rage. At the beginning of the drama, their hold on his life’s values and choices was almost impalpable but not anymore, now that they’re facing Yohan’s threat.

In these shots, Soohyun looks like she is covering Gaon’s ear, turning him away and protecting him from outside (from the pain, Yohan, the rest of the world).

And on professor Min’s part, it’s almost infantilizing, de-responsibilizing Gaon to say the least (« What are you making Gaon do? That child has been through so much. He suffered and struggled through the worst to get there. »), given he’s the one who planted him on the court’s bench to find what’s happening behind the scene: he could have asked Gaon for explanations (as Yohan underlined, « Did you hear it from Gaon himself? ») but he just snaps at him. He should have foreseen that he could’ve taken Yohan’s side.

For his defense, his family just got targeted but still, it’s the first time Gaon came back since then!

(By the way, that whole conversation with professor Min confirmed to Yohan Gaon didn’t admit to their plan to Soohyun nor the professor)

As for Soohyun, her deep concern for Gaon makes her antagonize Yohan and, in her POV, it’s pretty understandable: her friend got locked up in this judge’s house for days with no phone or permission to go out + said judge seems to not let her niece go out with her new friends, got violent against Gaon + he seems to be plotting something behind the trials he biased + Gaon’s description of the man in the first episodes wasn’t that nice but DESPITE IT ALL her friend still seems to be empathizing with him?

She’s maybe thinking he got manipulated by Yohan given the evil picture he depicted her & must feel helpless in front of Gaon’s sudden change of heart. I think that’s what she wanted to ask him when she got cut by the professor’s arrival. The lack of honest conversation between them is what’s making it worse: on one hand, Gaon goes to her every time he feels sad or confused to get comfort & advice without telling what truly is going on (or eventually telling her when she insists), on the other hand, Soohyun always tells him to give up his investigation on Yohan and never asks him his point of view to understand the situation.

And she discovered he lied about him not being involved with this man in the worst way possible, finding him by CKH’s body with Yohan. He was her reason to dedicate her life to protect people under the law (he does not owe her anything in no way, but it was her wish), and she ended up dirtying her hands for him. Her gut reaction to her moral principles being violated by both Gaon and her right now is stronger than wanting to hear the truth from Gaon. She continues to investigate Yohan on her own, to protect him. It was interesting to see this sententious side when she confronted Gaon after all this! The only time Soohyun saw him cry and didn’t support him, it hits hard ;;

But i believe the whole crisis that’s happening by the end of ep. 12 will make them team up again at least for a while. And on that note, will she meet Sun-Ah? It would be interesting!

I’m glad the professor raised as a concern on the live trials the due process & fair trial, which are essential for the rule of law to prosper.

In fact, the live trials slowly become a place of majoritarianism/ochlocracy/mob rule as the cases progress (the two best examples being the actor and Juk Chang cases), the protests against professor Min are another example. Even if Yohan has the last word on the defendant’s sentence, this issue is still there.

Maybe the viewers’ voice will turn against Yohan one day?

- The minister … Even though the story showed us how cruel her family could be, i can’t help but feel sympathy for her son with her suicide. And that is accentuated by the fact her family’s grief is not even showed, covered by the mediatic chaos. She could have fled the country as her son suggested, but she thought she was « nothing » without her accomplishments and her path to glory. As the former president of the foundation killed by Sun-Ah’s hands, she died in her office as the Minister of Justice, while her image wasn’t torn to shreds yet. The photograph she held showed her at the center and, ironically, it’s the only figure from the photo who is clear-cut, her husband and her son are out of focus (or it could just be the episode’s image quality misleading me haha). Even though she loved them (well, at least in her manner, which was kind of narcissistic tbh), she cared too much for her success and her death was her act of self-pity.

- This isn’t the first time Gaon was warned about Yohan and i find it interesting it’s the people closest to him that say that, especially K despite (or precisely because?) his loyalty to him. Elijah also warned him before.

- The whole argument … It’s a progression of ep. 5 & 8 scenes (’will you stand in my way or stand on my side?’ & ‘i wanted you by my side and if i needed to, i would’ve done something worse’). You can tell how desperate Yohan was when he reached out to Gaon. His gaze faltered, showing his hesitation to do it, but as the realization he was going to lose him dawned on him, this touch became a necessity in front of the exigency, making up for everything he couldn’t say out loud. It was a sad & hurtful mess. Yohan truly looked short on ‘arguments’ after Gaon’s question (‘what kind of monster am i turning into?’), he seemed to not even know what to say to make him stay, making him pause before talking about Soohyun.

The way his eyes lit up, almost smiling, full of hope, when he finished laying his ultimatum and how he regained a composed expression, thinking Gaon would take his side maybe?

I didn’t catch it on the first time, but Gaon’s sadness to end/put a hold on their collaboration (thus their whole relationship, stepping out of his life) transpired through him weakly rejecting Yohan’s hand with his own hand sliding down the latter's arm, as if he was unwilling to let this life with the Kangs go. You can see it’s hard on him to leave with the tears in his eyes.

I think Gaon’s response outran his thoughts, as a quick riposte, it was to make Yohan stop this. The way things went (well, it escalated QUICKLY), hurting him like that was the only effective way, and he knows it will hurt him: before saying Soohyun is his world, he tears up because of that (in addition to everything Yohan said and it was A LOT), and didn’t even have the strength/will to get angry like all the previous times:

the fact Yohan laid this very ultimatum and wanted to persuade/manipulate him into thinking this was the only choice. Even if he knew Yohan would be capable of doing this since ep. 7-8 (”To achieve his goal, would he not use another man’s pain? If the devil really did exist among us.”), he got a confirmation and it still hurts.

+ the fact he knows he has to hurt him with something as much as hurtful before he takes it too far.

+ the fact he knows he can’t live in this house any longer because of this argument when he made all these memories with them.

And (let’s hope for it) if Gaon wants to show Yohan there’s another way out of this ultimatum, Gaon’s « Soohyun is my world » might be a counter ultimatum (‘to stay by your side, you’ll have to deal with my world because there must be another way, there is no question, or else you’ll have to deal on your own’). He’s still not said anything to Soohyun (well, he didn’t have the opportunity to anyway but even during their confrontation, when she asked for details, he said nothing) nor the professor, so maybe that’s it?

- « Of course it doesn’t matter to me, but … » ELIJAH NOOOOOOOO ;;;;;;;;; After Yohan, Elijah tries in her way to hold Gaon back — and she makes a valid point tbh (look at what happened by the end of the episode!), but seeing her putting all her efforts and realizing it’s failing is heartbreaking … Given the preview for ep. 13, please let me hope this conversation won’t be their last one!!

- Utter devastation when the next scenes show how Gaon still shines even in his absence: the « You never apologize » + the scene with the nanny & Gaon’s last prepared meal + Gaon’s portrait by Elijah … ugh

- Elijah’s painting game is too strong, can’t relate haha! I wish they could show the BTS for this painting, respect for the artist behind!!

- On metaphorical images, Gaon took care of the Kangs like he tended to his plants at home. On a regular basis, he provided them attention and care, making them lively as his plants got lush. On ep. 8, we got a shot of Elijah smiling at Gaon’s plants, sort of a confirmation she loved how their house became warmer since Gaon’s stay, which led her to open up to his uncle.

- Now they’re only four! It looks like the mafia game haha, i look forward (am i though?) to the day Sun-Ah sits by herself haha

AND THIS MAN

This is true pig behavior, especially considering Sun-Ah’s past … I felt her reaction when he said all this bs to demean her, she had all her struggles with men thrown back to her face, soiled by these « jokes ».

- The monsters, the abyss and Nietzsche:

« He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee. », Nietzsche

- « I don’t care if humanity falls, as long as i have you two ». It was what he wouldn’t say to Gaon nor Elijah, and yet they’re his world! This sequence parallels Gaon’s inner wish when he leaves the Kang’s house + the flashbacks of his fond memories with the Kangs. Will Yohan give his vigilante ideals up for them? Will Gaon pursue this dream but in his own way that won’t threaten their « worlds »?

(Now we know what his whole world meant)

- The light from the chandelier (ie. their newfound family) is out of Yohan’s (metaphorical) reach, shown by its blurred silhouette, as if it’s gone from the room which regained its initial colder tones. But it’s not: once it’s made its way in the room, it remains and lingers, as a keepsake of the lost warmth. His fond memories with Gaon and Elijah flashed back through the window’s light.

On a similar note, Gaon’s room, albeit having warmer tones than the Kang’s ones since the beginning, looks dark too. The contrast with earlier episodes is clear. This reminds me of My Mister’s (SPOILERS) full shots of Lee Ji An’s room, getting warmer as she gets to know Park Dong Hoon, and losing all its fond colors when she has to leave for his sake. As if the room and inanimate objects were given life by their owner, imbuing them with their feelings. It becomes an outer expression of their feelings. Sorry for the rambling but i just love when they do that in fiction, and i think it sometimes leaves more impact to the viewers if emotions are conveyed through various angles (eg. through another character’s point of view, sounds, looks, the use of light i mentioned below, etc) !

- I wonder … since the flashbacks are giving us Gaon’s conscious point of view on this separation, was he awake when Yohan came back from his (forced) encounter with Sun-Ah? It’s a really minor point but it could be an interesting detail since this show always shows us there are some sides or spots to the stories we didn’t have yet!

The jenga scene also flashed back but this time we see Gaon’s POV seeing Yohan’s smile & we got Gaon’s angle when Yohan had a nightmare in ep. 5: while from Yohan’s POV, Gaon’s irruption truly felt like an invasion of his intimacy (the quick succession of shots expressing his panic and defensive reaction), from Gaon’s POV only one angle showed the scene, the tension was conveyed only when Yohan slapped his hand away.

We also got Yohan’s POV when he admitted to Gaon he needed him by his side (and a closer look at Gaon’s troubled expression)!

- Ep. 5 and 11-12 parallels:

Yohan’s tentative look at Gaon and Elijah playing outside, as if he wanted to join them like in ep. 11, the curtains mainly closed and only pushed by one of his hands. It let the daylight in his dark room through this sneak peek.

But in ep. 12, the curtains are drawn, Yohan taking the (moon)light fully in. And this time, he doesn’t reach out to his late brother in the flames, but to the moonlight. He gets up, as in a trance, from his nightmare like the last time, but he goes to his window instead. And it reminds me of both Huckleberry Finn’s OST’s (in Tempest, « you said i’ll live in the sun / moonlight » and in The Nights, « my / your night shines on you / me »), the suffer is here. And see how the light reveals his tear? I nearly missed it!

The fact he could not find sleep anymore after this night + he slept on his sofa where the moonlight could be seen + has kept his phone right next to him (in case Gaon called him or to know if something happened to him) ➾ 🌝 pure devastation 🌝

- I really love the show’s use of light/dark tones to reveal and contrast its characters’ emotions! What you can’t see in the light gets revealed in the dark, and vice-versa. The OST The Nights touches on this subject as well.

And it ties up very well to the plot so far: everyone has his or her own motivations and intentions, background, and makes choices, but depending on the perspective, their story changes and sparks off different reactions. Everybody’s story is interconnected.

As @skylessnights pointed out, one of the books found during the series (when Yohan revealed his past to Gaon if i’m correct), The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, depicts this angle well in its plot and epigraph: « Never again shall a single story be told as though it were the only one. » - John Berger.

When Gaon and Yohan go back to the mansion after CKH’s death, the route lights flash Gaon’s hands red, caught (literally) red-handed by Soohyun. He begins to recollect his recent memories of what just happened, and panics, short-winded, until Yohan touched his arm. He’s startled but calmed himself down, and we don’t hear him out of breath anymore. It’s interesting how the light’s focus was on Gaon’s hands, the core of his panic, until Yohan’s arm came into the light, as if our and Gaon’s attention went back to Yohan’s touch, his anchor in his panic, and begins to think clear-headed of what they had done. (btw, getting Phoenix Wright desperate vibes from Gaon’s pose haha)

Gaon’s emotions show when his phone lights up, trying to reach Soohyun again.

When Yohan’s inner wish brings him back to their happy times, the end of the flashback shows a shot of his eyes dazzled by the light of these memories and back to the present, the light now gone out from his eyes.

Yohan’s reaction to Gaon’s cry in the prison yard in ep. 7: what i loved to see was how his restraint told more about the emotions he held back. The light shifting on his face revealed his jaw clenching & frowned brows, his glassy eyes and him averting his gaze, which he often does when he’s in front of sensitive topics and it’s too much.

+ other instances he looked away:

When Jinjoo decides to accept the foundation’s offer, she steps into the dark side of the room where the two chairmen are. Up till now, she stood where the light could reach her, away from them. It symbolically seals her involvement with the foundation, and by the end of ep. 12, it is confirmed by her message on behalf of the foundation (about the plague) displayed on the screens. By the way, i love the fact so much things unfold while we focus on Yohan and Gaon’s story!

On the subject of ‘subjective’ truths, examples, besides the flashback with the priest about Yohan in ep. 11, could be the truth behind the cancellation of the donation by Yohan or Sun-Ah’s fall from the window when she was a maid. We got Sun-Ah, Elijah, and then later Yohan’s point of view.

- I think Gaon tried to call Soohyun and not Yohan (though the subs say otherwise) because the contact above has the ‘thug’ nickname with the fist emoji! It made more sense, Yohan would’ve answered right away! But i believe he will have regrets/worries in the next episodes (Yohan and Elijah seem to be getting in real danger so maybe he’ll come back to save them).

- Metatextuality in The Devil Judge — Beauty and the Beast (written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont & Disney’s 1991 animation movie)

I’ve always loved transtextual relationships between fictions, my french teacher in middle school gave us this passion haha! Ever since i read this interview translated by @deviljudge, it’s true i’m getting more and more Beauty and the Beast vibes, especially from ep. 12’s argument (and the whole premise Belle got locked up in the mansion in the beginning)! The original fairy tale and Disney’s adaptation are both relevant, some plot points differ from one another (Belle’s sisters vs Gaston, the mansion personnel turned into living paraphernalia) even though the core of the fairy tale is left untouched but for the sake of this bit, i’ll use the 1991 movie because its inevitably longer format delves more into the fairy tale moral lesson.

(Cheesy time incoming haha) The beast lets Belle go see her father he knew she deeply cared about, and let her go because he realized he loved her. He thought she would never come back, but despite it all, she came back and saved him from Gaston. Belle (Gaon) broke the spell that was casted on the mansion (the Kangs and their loneliness, especially when Yohan said he’s tired of this house). Yohan fails at not hurting the people he cares about but learns step by step, by Gaon and Elijah's side, how to live again and reconnect with his ‘human’ side.

Even the secretary looks like the modern version of the whole cast in the Beast’s mansion (Cogsworth, Lumière, …) haha

The movie intro is self-explanatory:

« Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind. But then, one winter’s night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away. But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old woman’s ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart. And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there. Ashamed of his monstrous form, the Beast concealed himself inside his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a beast? »

Belle’s characterization in the movie is also interesting:

« With a dreamy, far-off look and her nose stuck in her book what a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle ».

« There must be more than this provincial life (…) I want adventure in the great wide somewhere — I want it more than i can tell — And for once it might be grand to have someone understand — I want so much more than they’ve got planned »

& when Belle got locked up in the mansion: « I’ve lost my father, my dreams, everything. » (similar to “Soohyun is my world”).

Gaon, since his parents’ death, lived his life believing in the illusion of justice the system gave him, along with Soohyun and professor Min, his two pillars who kept him steady this whole time. Once he was showed it was an illusion, he wanted to fight this world.

Before the movie’s climax, this conversation reminded me of ep. 12’s argument:

« - Belle? Are you happy here with me?

- Yes. [looks to the distance]

- What is it?

- If only i could see my father again just for a moment. I miss him so much.

- There is a way. This mirror will show you anything. Anything you wish to see.

- I’d like to see my father, please. [The mirror projects the image of his father in danger and sick] Papa. Oh no. He’s sick. He may be dying and he’s all alone.

- [Glances at the wilting rose] Then you must go to him.

- What did you say?

- I release you. You’re no longer my prisoner.

- You mean i’m free?

- Yes.

- Oh, thank you. Hold on Papa, i’m on my way.

- Take [the mirror] with you, so you’ll always have a way to look back and remember me.

- Thank you for understanding how much he needs me.

(…)

- I let her go.

- [Cogsworth] Yes, splen … You what? How could you do that?

- I had to.

- Yes but … Why?

- Because i love her. »

Yohan did nothing to hold Gaon back even if he needs him (as shown when he clutches his hands together after he left) because he was forced by Gaon to understand how precious Soohyun is to him, this point was already made multiple times in the series (when Gaon thought he was the one who pushed Soohyun in the stairs and already threatened him about it, when Gaon told him he couldn’t live as a conman in front of Soohyun and his parents). Since his ‘to have you by my side, i would have done worse if it was necessary’ + ‘this is a life or death situation, sacrifices are also necessary’, he seemed to think Soohyun was expendable in his own world, which he shared with Gaon. With this argument, his world looks definitely incompatible with the one Gaon described (« Soohyun is my world »), and even though they already went this far in their plan, he lets him go and respects his choice. Will it make him change for the better or for the worse? Will the whole ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ apply to him?

Other moments i found interesting to note:

When Belle goes to save the Beast from the village:

« - Please, i know he looks vicious, but he’s really kind and gentle. He’s my friend. - - [Gaston] If i didn’t know better, I’d think you had feelings for this monster. - - He’s no monster, Gaston. You are! - - If you’re not with us, you’re against us. » (pretty similar to the professor’s rage in the hospital)

When Belle’s father goes to save her: « I don’t care what it takes. I’ll find that castle and somehow, i … I’ll get her out of there. » (when Soohyun talks about and to Yohan)

The Beast possessive behavior in the beginning of the story: « [To her father] She’s no longer your concern, take him to the village. » (similar to Yohan’s behavior towards Soohyun) & « [To Belle] The castle is your home now » (and towards Gaon)

A monster:

When the Beast observes Belle playing from afar:

- And i saw some Jane Eyre vibes (SPOILERS) from the whole fire haha + Wuthering Heights on Sun-Ah’s & Yohan’s mixed parts!

- And well … Sun-Ah’s character loosely reminds me of Simone in Nier Automata (which in itself is a reference to Simone de Beauvoir’s life and works), with the whole « I must become more beautiful / But he still won’t look my way », to whoever knows this game!

- These thigh boots holy hell Sun-Ah!!!! i loved this outfit!

- As soon as he said he didn’t feel anything from his revenge, K got the biggest death flag in this episode, i can’t believe they did this to the poor boy … When i asked for more scenes THIS isn’t what i meant aaaaaaaaaa

- A very random and weird note: Yohan’s almost silent and held back pain by the end of the ep. 12 fits his character so far, as well as his ‘calm’ tears. Given his past, it’s as if he’s always kept his pain bottled up and quietly bears it all and almost never got the space to properly let it all out (he had his brother, but with their father, i think they didn’t have this ‘chance’).

- My sick mind thought Sun-Ah was going to bring Gaon to the scene just in time for him to witness Yohan getting shot, but i guess it will be when she will get in the Kang’s mansion again according to the preview (since she asked Juk Chang for a « favor », i think they’ll knock Gaon out after beating him up for his own fun to leave him to Sun-Ah). Sun-Ah looked surprised when Jae-Hee shot him, so i guess only hurting K was part of the plan.

- The ‘I know i’m fucked’ look hahaha

+ the softer version:

- I now have BIG trust issues since these last episodes’ previews, and the cliffhangers kill me haha

- On another note, i find it amazing how Ji Sung and Kim Min Jung keep that upsetting atmosphere whenever there’s a scene between them that involves them and skinship, but it still conveys Sun-Ah’s complex feelings for Yohan and Yohan’s interest in her! The soundtrack really does a good job to convey that mood as well!

- In conclusion: How Dramatic do you want these two episodes to be? The devil judge: Yes

A/N: Imagine an AU where Loki attends parties at the compound will you? I would like to believe in that world. Hope y’all like it! Not my gif!

Warnings: Drinking, some angst, mostly fluff.

Music blasting from the speakers was starting to make you numb along with the alcohol you’d been chugging all night. To be honest you wanted to socialize, mingle with people and have fun, but your mind was somewhere else tonight.

The smell of expensive cologne and cigars, the unnecessary obligation to have small talk with delegates and colleagues made you wander out to the open terrace or as Stark called it ‘Party deck’ overlooking the beautiful city of New York that appeared even better at night.

You gulped the last of the whiskey from your glass, leaning over the glass railing. An involuntary shiver prickled your arms with goose bumps as the cold air bit at your skin. The whiskey burned low in your belly notifying that you’d hit your limit as the street lights down below started giving a bokeh effect.

Loki was a silent spectator at this party, as he’d been at most of such events. He only attended because Thor dragged him to these every single time. He never saw the point of all of this revelries, but he’d grown to tolerate them. Being on the good side now and wanting in on the team and everything.

Also because he’d get to see you, to which he wouldn’t admit, not even to himself.

He’d been intrigued by you since he became a part of the Avengers a few years ago. You always had something interesting to say, funny anecdotes to share with the team which he found endearing. Usually not someone to get lost in one’s own thoughts, he’d find himself recollecting moments from the past, missions where he got to spend time with you, smiling as he reminisced.

“She’s out on the balcony, brother.” Thor interrupted his train of thought, clapping his massive hand on his back, grinning.

“I don’t know to whom you’re referring, brother. I wasn’t looking for anyone.” Loki huffed, straightening up. Though Thor did not miss when his eyes flitted outside where he did see you leaning against the edge.

“Oh sure you were Reindeer Games. We can’t keep pretending you don’t have feelings for (Y/N).” Stark chimed in, irking Loki further more.

“It’s now or never, brother.”

They irritated him to the point where he was about to storm out, when he saw you stumble back inside and head towards the elevator.

…

A while later, Loki made way to your apartment floor to check in on you. The door flew open as he attempted to knock, and found you wrapped in a blanket sitting on the edge of your bed, preoccupied with your thoughts.

“Are you alright, (Y/N)?” he asked cautiously, noticing the hamper next to your feet.

“I tried to sleep but I couldn’t find any sheep.” You whispered sincerely, looking up at him.

Brow furrowing at your answer, he got closer and took a seat next to you, looking at you intently.

“You had a lot to drink. Did you get sick?”

You nodded wordlessly. The room had finally stopped spinning.

“Did no one notice you weren’t doing so well? What kind of friends are these? Do they not care?”

Loki got concerned by the second, angry that nobody had come to your aid.

“Will you stop fucking interrogating me? It’s pretty normal.”

“Drinking until you vomit isn’t ordinary.” He didn’t want you to feel worse than you already did. He also wasn’t very good at comforting or saying the right things.

“If you’re here to just snap at me, you can leave Loki.” You threw the sheets back and stood abruptly, your center of gravity swaying a bit.

You got under the blankets this time, no longer wanting to face him though he remained glued to his spot. Fists clenched, he was unsure of how to pacify you, what he could say that wouldn’t make you mad. He never had to think about stuff like this before.

“No! That’s not why I’m here, I just—I’m trying, okay?”

When you didn’t turn around, his worries worsened. Maybe he wasn’t meant to be around mortals, their feelings were too much to handle. However right now, his feelings for you were getting out of hand as well.

Looking around, he strode towards the bed slowly, hoping you wouldn’t react too violently when he approached.

He had to act now. Now or never as his annoying brother had mentioned.

You sensed his movements, glad he didn’t just abandon you and walk away. Nausea still swirling strong in your belly, you prayed it wouldn’t come to the surface at the wrong time.

The bed dipped beside your folded knees and Loki leaned over to look at your face. Sighing deeply, you sat up slowly this time and let the sheets fall off your shoulders, you still didn’t face him though. Choosing to stare outside your window at the night sky.

“Why did you feel the need to consume to so much tonight? If you don’t mind my asking.” He asked, voice quiet yet managed to quicken your heartbeat. He could be polite when he really tried.

Who would’ve thought?

“I don’t know just life not sailing all that smoothly I guess. I tend to overthink most of the time which doesn’t help in any way. This profession doesn’t really permit maintaining close friendships. And I end up turning to alcohol for support, which doesn’t help either.”

You confessed honestly, not used to expressing to anyone let alone The God of Mischief, it felt good to let it out even that little bit.

“Ah it’s all doom, gloom and irreparable despair? Try me.”

A gentle warm palm pressed against the middle of your back surprised you, as he said those words. He really was trying to be nice to you. Allowing a safe space for your thoughts, encouraging you to open up, staying by your side as you were vulnerable. This made you snap your head in his direction, to find him gazing at you with a—was that a small smile you caught?

You didn’t know what took over, but you suddenly felt the urge to hug Loki, so you did. Lightly at first, but when he returned the gesture, you tightened your hold. You were pretty sure he could hear the erratic pounding of your heart as you two hugged.

“Thank you, Loki.” You whispered.

“You needed a hug.” He replied, awkwardly clearing his throat as you broke apart.

Loki hadn’t planned on it, but seeing you stare at your hands pointedly, made him tuck a strand of your hair behind your ear which effectively gained him eye contact. Lightly gripping your chin he leaned ahead and placed a soft kiss to your forehead, which again was unexpected.

“Get some sleep now, little one. We can talk tomorrow.”

With that, he stood holding the sheets up, waiting for you to lie back down. You quickly composed yourself, getting comfortable as a smile played at your lips. You didn’t really want him to leave, you wanted to talk, but sleep tugged strongly, your eyelids droopy as you struggled to keep them open.

As if understanding what you were contemplating, he gave you a rare empathetic smile,

“We’ll talk tomorrow, little dove. I’ll be here.”

The Water Was Never Afraid - Chapter 14: Grind

“You’ll be fine, kid,” Plagg whispered from Adrien’s collar as he strode down the hall to the photography studio, all made up and ready to go. “Remember to breathe, and don’t do anything stupid.”

Adrien heeded Plagg’s advice and took a deep breath before pushing open the door.

“Adrien! Good morning!”

The effervescent voice made Adrien’s heart quicken. He took in Marinette’s appearance—her hair was loose, one side hooked behind her ear, and she wore a loose, silk crepe button-down blouse in red, tucked into form-fitting black pants and red ballet flats. She looked good in red. “Good morning,” he said, trying not to blush or think about last night.

Not that last night had been anything remarkable for her. They’d just hung out and talked over banana bread.

But for him, it was the earth-shattering night that he had realized he had fallen in love for the second time in his life.

“Violette should be here soon, too,” Marinette remarked, beckoning Adrien toward the changing booths.

Violette was a model from a partner agency, and Adrien had worked with her on multiple occasions while he was still modeling, so they were on friendly terms.

Étienne, the photographer, waved as he approached. “‘Morning, boss.”

Adrien greeted him back, as Marinette held open the curtain for him. Four outfits were hanging in garment bags on hooks inside the booth.

As Adrien was changing, he heard the door open and a feminine, Italian-accented voice enter the room.

“Marinette, love! You look gorgeous as usual, my dear. Are you sure you don’t want to take my place?”

Adrien couldn’t help but agree with her appraisal, though it was probably for the better that he wouldn’t be posing with Marinette.

“Oh, hush, Violette,” Marinette laughed. “I’m a disaster in photos. I’d rather be on the other side of the camera.”

Footsteps came closer as Marinette ushered Violette to the other changing booth. “Adrien’s already changing, so we’ll start soon.”

The color scheme was neutrals with a pop of color. For the first look, Adrien wore a cream coat with black buttons, a grey turtleneck, and ochre yellow pants. The inner lining of the coat, which showed with certain poses, was white with centimeter-sized polka dots the same color as the pants. Violette, wearing a light grey overcoat draped over her shoulders, a white chiffon blouse with ruffled collar, and white straight-leg pants with black stiletto ankle-boots, donned a bright orange scarf.

“Good to see you, love,” Violette pulled Adrien in for a hug, throwing air kisses at his cheeks, careful not to disturb their hair and makeup.

Marinette handed Adrien a black umbrella.

“Did I tell you anything about the collection?”

Adrien shook his head. “Sorry, I should know by now.”

“It’s okay, this was all last minute,” Marinette reassured him. Addressing both him and Violette, she explained, “The theme centers around the pop of color in a greyscale palette, and since rain kind of symbolizes a drab or greyscale environment, I decided to use an umbrella as a prop, and even do some shots that look like they were taken in the rain. We’ll do a round of ‘dry shots,’ where you’ll pose with the umbrella, then move on to the ‘wet shots.’ Don’t worry, you won’t actually get wet, Étienne’s just going to use props to simulate rain.”

They shot a series of photos against a neutral grey backdrop with just the umbrella. Adrien settled into the familiar routine, his mind going into autopilot. He couldn’t help but watch Marinette as she moved around the studio, checking different angles, giving Étienne directions.

“Great expression, Adrien, but I need you to look left,” Étienne instructed. Marinette adjusted his arm, and he swooned internally at her soft touch and the subtle whiff of her perfume.

It had been eight long years since he had last fallen in love. The way he felt about Ladybug had scarred over into something calm, mature, and occasionally painful. He had forgotten what it was like to feel giddy from the mere proximity of the object of his affections.

Why had he ever agreed to date Kagami without feeling this way about her?

“Open the umbrella and hold it—yes, just like that.” Étienne continued to give instructions, Marinette leaning into him to whisper something inaudible to the models. She motioned with her hand. “Violette, over here.”

Bodies shifted. Adrien peeked under the umbrella’s canopy at Marinette—she met his eyes and raised an eyebrow. Feeling burned, he reverted his gaze to where Étienne wanted him to look.

Sure, he had rationalized that he couldn’t have Ladybug, and he didn’t think he was capable of loving anyone else the same way. He cared for Kagami deeply, of course. Their friendship was irreplaceable. She was important to him, and he wanted her to be happy.

Yet, Marinette had blindsided him. Since last night, he had been drowning in reminiscence of all the moments they had shared over the past eight years. She had caused him a fair amount of grief throughout collège and the beginning of lycée, when he wasn’t sure where their friendship stood and whether she really considered him a good friend or thought of him as highly as he thought of her.

“Try a little smile. Like you have a secret.”

Adrien shifted his weight, adjusting his pose. He had a secret, all right, but it didn’t make him want to smile. Nonetheless, shooting a longing glance at Marinette, he pretended there was hope for them and smiled. Why was love always out of his reach?

“Marinette deserves nothing less than fabulous, don’t you think?” Violette remarked to him, shifting her pose. “Spice it up, darling.”

That drove the last of the clouds out of his expression.

He recalled how precious those small victories with Marinette were, like the time they’d sat next to each other on the bus for three hours on a school trip and rather than it being awkward, they had lost themselves in chatting the whole way.

Since then, they had shared inside jokes and movie recommendations, and his heart swelled every time he reminded himself that they were really and truly friends.

Could that have been love, after all? A form of love? Maybe he had loved her all along.

Maybe he was so smitten with Ladybug he hadn’t recognized the potential that was there.

“… to Romeo. Earth to Romeo.”

Adrien blinked and looked at Violette, realizing he’d zoned out. “What?”

“How was your trip to outer space? We’re done with this round—time to change.” She snaked an arm around his and pulled him toward the booths, leaning in to whisper in his ear, “So, lover boy, sweet on our little designer, aren’t you?”

“W-what?” Adrien blushed. “Why do you say that?”

“Darling, you keep looking at her as if she holds all the secrets of the universe.”

“It’s not like that,” Adrien insisted, fighting a blush. His brain caught up to what Violette had been calling him—Romeo—and he gasped in horror. “Violette, you’ve got it all wrong! I’m in a committed relationship. With… someone else. Not Marinette. Please don’t insinuate anything.”

“Whoa, whoa.” Violette held up her hands. “I didn’t mean to offend you, my love. I didn’t know, otherwise I would not have said anything, okay? Forgive me.”

They went into their separate booths, the word ‘committed’ rubbing Adrien like a grain of sand under his skin.

For the next look, Adrien wore a primary blue coat over a grey-pinstriped white button down shirt and slate grey slacks, while Violette wore an emerald fitted blouse with a gathered collar and sleeves, tucked into beige wide-leg pants cinched with a forest green fabric sash.

Marinette pulled an inflatable pool from the other end of the studio, while Étienne clamped a pane of glass to an upright stand and misted it with water droplets from a spray bottle. He set up a portable shower head behind the glass, over the pool, and adjusted the lighting.

“Are you sure we’re not going to get wet?” Adrien asked dubiously, not quite sure how this was going to work.

Marinette laughed. “Of course! Watch and learn. First, you, Adrien… stand right here.” She guided Adrien into place while Violette settled into a chair on the side to wait her turn.

Marinette switched on the shower and held the umbrella under it until the top was decorated with water droplets and trails of water, then handed it to Adrien. Their fingers brushed, and she gave him a warm smile.

A sense of déjà vu dredged up an ancient memory. “Marinette, remember the day we became friends?” he asked breathlessly before she could step away.

The smile faltered and she blushed. “Of course I remember,” she murmured. “I’m surprised you do.”

“Why wouldn’t I? That was one of the most important days of my life.”

Marinette’s lips curled up subtly, as if she were lost in thought, then she looked Adrien over, choosing not to respond. Several seconds passed achingly as she adjusted his jacket, smoothed his shirt, and shifted a few strands of hair. Though she did it with all the innocent attentiveness of an artist examining the composition of her piece of work, Adrien couldn’t help but imagine tenderness in her touch.

When she stepped away, the atmosphere reverted to all business.

Étienne took his position behind the pane of glass, snapping a few shots as Adrien improvised poses.

“Violette,” Marinette called, and she switched places with Adrien.

Adrien hovered over Étienne’s shoulder as he photographed Violette.

“Let me work in peace, boss,” Étienne said with gruff affection, elbowing Adrien lightly without taking his hands off the camera.

“I just want to see how the ‘rain’ is turning out.”

Étienne humored him with a sneak peek. The droplet-covered pane of glass created a glittering bokeh effect in the foreground, and combined with the streaks of falling water droplets in the background and the water-covered umbrella, the shots looked convincingly to have been taken in the rain. “They’ll look even better after post processing,” Étienne added.

“Very impressive.”

“I’ll confess, the idea was Marinette’s.”

“Ah, she’s brilliant,” Adrien sighed.

The look Étienne gave him went over his head.

Violette snagged Adrien on the way to the dressing booths for the third outfit change. “You made her blush, Casanova. What ever did you say, love?”

“Violette, I’m serious,” Adrien pleaded, looking her firmly in the eyes. He lowered his voice and gave in to the fact that she could see right through him. “I’m not supposed to feel this way about her. If anything gets out about it, it’s not going to look good for either of us, so please stop.”

She looked at him pityingly and squeezed his arm. “If she’s the one you want, there’s always a chance. I don’t see a ring on your finger, after all.” She winked, a sly expression flitting across her face.

“Maybe,” Adrien sighed.

“I won’t breathe a word, my love, don’t worry.” She patted his shoulder, and they split into their respective booths.

“She’s right, you know,” Plagg whispered very quietly in his ear once the curtain was secured. “You’re gonna get yourself in trouble if you keep this up. You don’t have to be with Kagami if you don’t love her that way.”

“I can’t do that to Kagami,” Adrien returned quietly. “And I do love her.” Just not that way, maybe.

“Did you say something, love?” Violette called from the neighboring booth.

“No, nothing,” Adrien called back.

Adrien cut into his steak and, spearing an asparagus tip along with it, put a small piece in his mouth.

The low-lit restaurant was hushed, the sound of subdued chatter and silverware against ceramic filling the room.

“How did the photoshoot go?” Kagami asked, nudging his foot with hers under the table.

“I thought it went well.” Adrien took a deep breath to quell the sense of anxiety that was rising in his chest. “The photographer used this cool effect to make the shots look like they were taken in the rain. I can’t wait to see them published.”

“I’m really happy for Marinette.” Kagami’s smile didn’t show that she had any reservations about this sentiment.

Adrien nodded, then changed the topic because he couldn’t bear to talk about Marinette with Kagami. “I heard this dinner was your doing?” He looked around at the table, where some of Gabriel’s biggest backers were seated, enjoying the food and conversation. Best of all, Gabriel himself was present, with Nathalie at his side.

Kagami shook her head modestly. “I had lunch with your father, and we talked, that’s all. It was his idea.”

Adrien knew better. Kagami had a way of inspiring people to action. “Thank you,” he whispered, sliding his hand across the table to brush her fingers.

“I know you’ve been encouraging him to go out lately. I just wanted to help… I thought it would make you happy.”

“I am happy.” With a rueful smile, he retracted his hand to cut another piece of steak.

Week 2

Practice & Test Shots at Location 1 - R.A.O.B Social Club

Below are a series of test photographs from one of my possible organisation location for the possibility to create a promotional video for them. The organisation is called the R.A.O.B, it’s a social club that does charity work and numerous other activities. One of the reasons for my choice of this organisation is that I know the owner and members of the club as I have visited this place many times. This helps get me access and permission to film there as often as I want, of course, I did ask beforehand and said they didn’t have a problem and I am more than welcome.

The photograph you see below in fig 1 is the outside of the organisation’s building. They recently repainted the building, making it much more appealing as before paint was peeling off and looked outdated, the new colour updates the look and makes it look like new. I was thinking for an opening establishing shot that this shot in fig 1 would be perfect as it would show the audience what the outside of the building looks like, it’s so that they know what to look for if they want to go here in the result of the video. In terms of framing, cars usually park outside businesses, but this is not the case here as this building is on a busy main road, so I do not need to worry about cars being parked, but I do need to worry about the timing of my frame. The reason for this is vehicles are continually passing by so I need to time my video/photograph right making sure I manage my time by planning beforehand.

Fig 2 & 3 are slightly different kinds of shallow focus experimentation, this is me experimenting with varying depths of field. In the two photographs, you can see the focus swap from one glass to the other while the background behind the beer glasses remains out of focus, this results in giving a subtle Bokeh effect with the High-Key lighting. The multi-layered depth of field gives the impact of an ample space even though the shots are close-ups, they still appear like they aren’t, it makes the room look longer.

The High-Key lighting works well in this case since the glasses are transparent, it allows the light to reflect and bloom. The lighting in these photographs are a warm shade of Whitebalance, but this is not the camera’s doing but the light sources in the room and the colours they reflect off.

Fig 4 & 5 are shallow focused close-ups on some beer taps in the organisation at the bar upstairs. At this time, I was using a 50mm lens which, if I knew ahead of time, I would have gotten a wider lens or a lens that doesn’t crop the shot so much. The space in this area was tight, I was as far back as I could to try and get all the taps in the frame. The one other problem that I encountered is not in fig 4 but in fig 5, when the focus is targeted on the background, the light is focused and is more defined. This highlights the shadows and the unpleasant appearance of the back wall to the left when compared to the right side, which is lit up and has more colour. The lighting is too Low-Key for my liking and doesn’t match the rest of the lighting and colour for my idea.

Except for these problems, I feel like I could get a nice shot of the bartender pouring a beer which would be an excellent starting shot after an establishment like the outside of the building like in fig 1.

In fig 6 below, this is a close-up shot of one of the organisation’s bar areas, one of which has a large selection of alcohol hung on the wall, not only for decoration but for practical use. If I decided to choose this organisation for my video, I am definitely going to include this, possibly as a panning shot or a sliding shot, something like what you would use on a Digi-Slider.

I would need to lower my Aperture as it’s High-Key lighting, although there is a little too much light blooming off the glass bottles. This makes it harder to see each individual container and kind of blends some of them together, especially the Vodka bottles on the right side, which are almost transparent. I love the colours of the Rum & Whisky bottles on the left side as the light highlights the brown/golden liquid

Fig 7 is a test shot of a mid-long shot of the Social Club downstairs area when it is busy. To get an idea of what it might be able to film here, I needed to take photographs of when the place is occupied to see what space I have and see if I can work around the people in the room while not interrupting them. The shot you see below is shallow focused, the man on the left of the frame is out of focus. I wanted to have the audience focus on the main part of the bar which you can see its in focus where the two men are socialising having a drink.

In terms of areas to get camera shots & angles, the space available is too small/cramped, especially when the organisation is full every day of the week. However, the lighting in the building is warm and not overexposed, this means that I wouldn’t have to worry too much about overexposure or filming directly into a light source. I don't need to adjust the Aperture & ISO too much as in fig 7, the colour and lighting are pretty much what I want for this kind of organisational promotional video.

Fig 8 & 9 are some more depth of field shallow focus practice shots, this is in the same position & time that these photographs were taken but with the focus changed. At the time of the photographs (fig 8 & 9), the social club was hosting a charity event which resulted in the upstairs area being slightly decorated, one of which is the string of hearts you see below positioned in front of a window in front of Carrickfergus Castle across the road.

The red hearts stand out well against the dark brown & grey colours of the castle, it helps create and see the focus point of each photograph, fig 8 the red hearts are focused whereas fig 9 is the opposite. This kind of shot would be useful as an opening/closing shot of my promotional video if I decide to go with this organisation. Still, it all depends on how I want the promotional video to go.

The video below is at the same location, R.A.O.B, it is me experimenting with Rack Focus in a video to see how I could incorporate it into my promotional video if I do decide to choose this organisation.

The video below is me practising rack focusing the beer glass in the frame against the background. The focus is being pulled, at the start, it is concentrated in the beginning and then switches to the environment while the glass goes out of focus. Unintentionally captured bokeh when the glass is in focus, this happened because the light reflections in the background become unfocused, which let the light blooms which you can actively see on the left side of the frame.

here are my photos for the translation assignment

i wanted to play around with photoshop now and manipulating my photos, as well as using some of my props. in the first picture, i photoshopped rain drops to the lamp. i also photoshopped the planet earth and moon in the second and fifth photo respectively. for the last photo, i cut out a heart in a piece of paper and held it up to the camera to get the bokeh effect to be heart-shaped. overall, i was going for a dark erethrial aesthetic since that’s what vibe my song choice gives me.

The reasons why we date and break up

Pairing: Hyun/Zen x Reader/MC Genre: Angst. Disclaimer: None. A/N: Hyun, that idiot. Specific is good, Anon-san (〜￣▽￣)〜

Snowflakes landed painfully on the window of the taxi he was in. A deep sigh escaped, leaving him with only more of this consuming emptiness. It was nighttime, the perfect hours to get sentimental, but it seemed that it could not make Hyun any worse. A glance outside and he sighed once more. Big sparkling lights like a bokeh effect in a photograph contrasted with the pale coat the earth was wearing at this time of the year. If not for their stubbornness, they would have been walking down those shops, laughing wholeheartedly while sharing those street snacks (y/n) used to be fond of. Was it his fault after all? He had blamed her so easily but now that he felt hopeless, he realized he had acted like a spoiled child. Her love was so pure, so unconditional, it seemed he grew used to it and became ungrateful.

- Mister, where are we going?

A weak startle ripped Hyun out of his thoughts and he contemplated the scenery once more before answering. Was there anywhere he could go?

- Just go straight, please.

The car started, leaving the sidewalk for the consolation of the road. Hyun’s body sunk in his seat, wishing it would help him disappear from all those regrets. His life, now, had the filter of a sad movie, making him a desolate actor trapped in a dramatic cinematic record. This sounded so pathetic. Was it even worse that he wallowed in self-pity? He should have been rehearsing some more, exercising or jogging. Anything as long as it was useful.

Streets drew shades of desperation as the taxi brushed them with the soft purr of the engine. Having a nice body and a pretty face was useless if he was all alone in the end. Maybe he should call her. How long as it been since the last time they spoke? Barely a week but it felt as if years had already past, leaving poor Hyun as an old man embraced by a film of sorrow and bitterness.

His phone was fidgeting in between his slender fingers as digits pondered the intact recall of her number. Sadly, his heart pumped with joy as the calling vibration gave hope that she made the first move. If only she saw the wringing of his face when he realized it was only his ex-girlfriend. The disappointment was at the verge of an insult to this girl but it just confirmed where his heart was. Nonetheless, he picked up his phone, trying to sound as collected as possible.

- Zenny, I heard you had a dispute with your current girlfriend, are you okay?

Was it because he was irritated that he seemed to notice some satisfaction in her tone? He faked a chuckle and assured her that it was nothing serious. After all, it was not something terrible. It could not be. (Y/n) and him loved each other, they would get back together eventually. She just needed some time in order to learn how to fully trust him. The drama they made had been catastrophic enough.

- I hope it is not because of our relationship.

Now he was doubtful. They had no “relationship”. Was that why (y/n) lied to him? Maybe she did make the assumption they were having something again and she got scared. It could have been the case if his ex was spreading nonsense.

- What are you talking about?

Silence lengthened as she appeared to be carefully choosing her next move; strictly followed by her lovey-dovey voice acting that made him somehow uncomfortable.

- What do you mean? You are casted in dramas, you cannot show yourself with such a plain girl! I only told her that, for your career, you should appear with me in public instead of her since I am a sexy idol.

Seriously, what was wrong with all those pop singers? Echo Girl and her; was he a magnet for people like them? Now he also remembered how much she valued herself and anything that revolved around her. So that had to be what happened in the end. She must have told (y/n) to back off or something with that weird excuse that she was “not enough”. His lover had already expressed this fear once or twice and, at last, he was the one who did not trust her and only made her insecurities worse. He sighed heavily before clearing his throat.

- Is this for my career or for yours?

His free hand roamed on the fabric of his jean. How did he get to a point where he would not even believe the person he loved the most? Since when did he stop fully supporting (y/n)? He should have acted better when he still had her.

- I would not be here if not for (y/n). You made your choices back then and I am making mine. I think we have nothing else to say to each other so please, next time, pretend that we never knew each other. I do not want to be associated with you any longer.

He hanged up just as he finished talking and exhaled tiredly. His ex-girlfriend broke up with him for the sake of her career and now that? At the time, he perfectly understood her decision and supported her even if it did pain him. But this? This was nothing he could accept. It was wrong and, moreover, it did hurt his precious princess. How he felt guilty. Sinking further in his seat, he closed his eyes for a minute, wondering again if he should call (y/n). Currently, she was at Jaehee’s apartment. For the past damn week. They fought about this and that and now he was all alone, unsure if he had anything worth (y/n)’s perfection. All she did was to care about him and… What got to him to act this way? He wanted to drink now.

Before he realized, Jaehee was answering the call he made. She was jaded but stayed faithful to both of them and managed more or less to deal with their fight. Even though, she distinctly stated that she trusted (y/n) with her version of the story.

- Oh Zen, I am glad you called. (Y/n) insisted on watching one of your DVDs… I do not know if I am in right of telling you this but she looks deeply sad… It seems to be getting worse… Do you really wish to stay on your grounds? You know (y/n) would never lie to you…

- I know. I made a mistake… But will she accept my apologies?

- I am sure she will if you try. At least, give yourself a chance. She loves you, Zen.

The two friends ended the call shortly after. Now was a good time to go back. No need to keep his depressed movie character mood; it was time that he took action and got his girlfriend back.

When he finally arrived in front of Jaehee’s flat, Hyun stopped on his track for a short moment. Even though he did not trust her when he should have, now was another opportunity. He was sure she loved him enough to try to understand his mistake. Three shy knocks on the door and it was Jaehee who greeted him with a relieved smile. He made his way into the home, intending to not make any noise so (y/n) would not suspect a thing. While his friend went to the kitchen to make some tea for the three of them, he approached his dear love before sitting gently next to her. Their eyes locked in a silence where he took her hand in his before pressing it lightly. He missed this touch so much, it seemed all his sadness took a final painful wave before disappearing. Same thing occurred to (y/n) as she started crying shortly after and Hyun pulled her for a tender embrace.

- I missed you, Zen…

- I know, I missed you too… I am sorry, I will always trust you from now on.

A fist hit his arm without any real force as she muttered that he was an idiot, which made him laugh before acknowledging.

Shortly after, Jaehee came back with a tray of warm tea and various treats, glad to see them finally back together. For she knew just how much they loved each other. The rest of the night was spent watching the musical, laughing at every cheesy line he got to say and realizing that, if they had been in a movie, they would have been, once again, a beautiful happy ending.

Moving Image - Research 3 Adverts

This is a Polish TV advert of Allegro ( on-line shop similar to Amazon) that probably touched many hearts. In this advert an older man orders a book called "English for beginners" to learn the language to be able to talk in English with his granddaughter and family abroad.

This man very meticulous learn English day by day, at home, in the bus. etc. He is putting sticky notes with English names on different things to help him remember. next thing he orders from Amazon is suitcase, then he packs his stuff and is ready to fly to Argentina constantly repeating words in English. Finally this man meets his family and speaks his first world in English to wee granddaughter.

I think this advert is great, it show persistence in pursuing the set goal, simplicity, a lot of emotion and finally how important the family is and how much we can do for them.

I think the sound and narration plays huge role in this advert because it could be hard to understand the sense of it. Also subtitles included add more interest to it and reminds me of the times when I watch movies/videos with subtitles.

In many scenes it looks like the camera was hand-held and I think it gives kind of "home made" video feeling and I really like it.

This is a Philadelphia cream cheese advert that I already planned to recreate for this brief.

It is early morning, sun is shining through the window. The smell of fresh coffee spreads around the house. The dining table is ready to prepare breakfast... Philadelphia cheese spread on fresh and crispy baguette, topped with a little bit of honey, looks delicious. The advert finish with a smiley lady who's enjoying her breakfast and is ready for a new day.

I like this advert because it shows how small and simple things can change our perspective of seeing things around us. Often there is no time to enjoy the breakfast and take it slowly.

I think that music and narration plays important role in this advert as it adds a sense of peace and relaxation - because that is how we would like start the day - with calmness not in a rush.

In this advert there are not to many camera movements, I can recognize tracking, panning and pull focus. A lot of scenes are done without any camera movements (static).

Point of view is mostly in eye level of subject matter. Composition: close up, extreme close up and medium.

The background is mostly blurry with natural bokeh light effect.

The last ad I chose is about kids trying dark chocolate, probably for the first time. I love kids face expression when they try it, it is so funny and natural. I can see that excitement and happiness in first child eyes and then this disgust just after. After that there is a lady eating the same chocolate with enjoyment.

I really like the humorous part of it, the excitement of trying something new which is probably the best and surprising only for kids because as an adults we are already used to so many flavors and they don't surprise us that much (maybe). I guess I need to try something new :)

The ad is simply done. there are not much camera movement, mostly static and gentle tracking. Point of view is eye level. The composition is medium and close up.

Dramatic music adds even more humor to the ad .

This is a good example of ad without many camera movement but with good idea and great final result.

Today was absolute trash (don't worry, this time of the semester is always trash) yet these subs turned the day around.

And then the boys' colors merged again during the bokeh effect.

Then, THEN, whoever is subbing this (I have the link. I know who is subbing this. I donated nine whole dollars because I love them now.) put little orange and blue hearts dancing around the subs of the song playing in the credits on the top of the screen.

Other girl edits (part 4 - final edits of the colour fill)

These images i created on the 13th april.

The first 2 pictures I knew I wanted to take them further and improve them.

In the 1st picture I loved the idea of the fully brown colour pallet. In editing this image i chose to edit the eyes with the darker green colours ranging from darker to lighter depending on whether or not it was the iris or not, and then the light effect is added to give the look of a life like aspect to the image.

As for this image it was by complete accident that I created the colour pallet. I edited this image by changing the colour of the background colour to a teal green and then to make the dress and the hair a different colour, i had to add lines to the top of the hair and then then bottom of the hair. The dress colour I picked a colour that was a contrast to both the green colours and then the skin colour. Then I edited the eyes to be a pink purple colour, i then added the star effect around the edge of the eye, this makes the eyes look more lifelike. I like that the outline of the image stayed a dark brown colour.

In these 2 pictures the only difference between them is the effect I used at the end. For the first picture I used the glimmer brush in the luminescence section and in the second picture I used the bokeh lights brush in the same section.

This is an edit of of the image. I wanted to create an Arel look to it. So I picked 2 shades of red for the hair, one darker for the highlights. Then I chose a green for the colour of the dress and a skin colour that went with the dress and the hair. I chose blue for the background as to represent the sea. Then the only colour left to choose was the colour of the eyes, lips and the nail colour, i had to pick a colour that went with the all the colours of the picture.

Then i edited the colour of the eyes with a blue as this colour contrasts with the colour of the purple.

I then I used the decimal section of the texture brush to create the dotted effect. This effect created a look to the piece that made me think of a pop art and the idea of comic strip art work.

This is the way that this layer was created. The red colour is used to change the pencil layer, this really makes the red layer highly contrasting from the black layer of the background. I decided to create the black layer over the whole of the remaining space and then I picked a really light pink for the skin colour of the arms and face.

I really like this piece of art work it gives me vampire/ witch vibes.

These images are edits of the black edit. I edited these images by with this image. I changed the colour of the dress from black to red. This made the highlights of the hair and the red outline more noticeable. I then changed the colour of the eyes by using the .. brush to change the colour from black to a purple/grey colour. Then I added the red circular layer to complete the look of the piece, by using the pulse brush.

I edited this image by changing the background colour from black to a pink/red colour. Then I changed the colour of the flare brush to a green colour and then another smaller layer, on top that is white.

This image has the pulse brush to create the yellow circular layer. Then I edited the colour of the flare brush to a dark yellow and a bright yellow and gold and then layered these together to create the evil look that the eyes get.

In editing this image the bokeh light section became the effect I used for the heart, in the colour grey. Then I changed the eye colour to a pale purple and then used the flare brush to make the white colour.

I do like the 8th image the most as it looks like the one that is the most finished.

Suspicious Partner (Korean Drama)

This is the first Ji Chang Wook drama I’ve watched-- and the advent of my love for Wookie baby. It’s also the drama that I felt so attached with because every time that it’s getting too intense I’d just pause, go to the kitchen, and drink water. They really succeeded in putting their viewers into the shoes of the actors!

What was the story about?

It was about a prosecutor and a lawyer who tried to unravel the mysterious interconnected deaths of people, and along the way, romance began to bloom between them. However, as they unravel the deaths, it also lead them to become the main target of the serial killer.

My opinions:

With the combination of Ji Chang Wook’s (No Ji Wook) angst and flirtatiousness, I think it would be impossible to not fall in love with him. Especially, on that part when he gave those swoon-worthy stares to Nam Ji Hyun (Eun Bong Hee) while they were washing the dishes-- oh god it was really really good! That was the exact moment I swooned and realized that I love him~ oppa sherenghae

It was my first time watching Nam Ji Hyun (Eun Bong Hee) and her character, the clumsy but smart girl, fitted her well and she was able to give justice to the character. Although, I didn’t like the way she speaks sometimes because it seems like she’s trying to act cute and it’s just annoying. I don’t know if it’s just a pet peeve but I would really appreciate if she would talk normally.

Dong Ha (Jung Hyun Soo) is another nasty little jerk who succeeded in scaring the heck out of me because of how he acts, stares, his words, and how crazy he is as a person. I remember pausing every time his scenes are getting intense, just to go to the kitchen and drink water. I need to snap back to reality because I really felt like I was one of those people whom he’s chasing down.

I like most characters in this drama because I’ve watched them before especially Lee Deok Hwa (Byeon Young Hee) and Nam Gi Ae (Hong Bok Ja). But some of the new faces I’ve seen is Nara (Cha Yoo Jung) and I like the way she looks like, she’s tall and very pretty. However, I think she’s new to the drama world because her actions are still calculated. I also noticed Kim Ye Won (Na Ji Hae), I like it when she’s bickering with Bong Hee and of course when she pushed her to be hugged by Wookie baby. Of course, I like that!

With their plot, it was a mix of romance and thriller. It was balanced well that you won’t feel like you’re being deprived of romance because it has been scaring the heck out of you. It almost comes as alternate because every time that there is an intense scene, it will always be followed by another romantic scene from the leads. If you can’t imagine the degree of intensity of this drama-- just imagine how intense the drama is that they had to really do a french kiss?? Are ya kidding me?? I told you they had to balance it!!

The dialogues are quotable, sometimes there an in-depth analogy from a relative object, they still make sure that they fit into the context of the situation. They don’t just insert dialogues for the sake of rhymes and the like, they make sure that they are going to give impact every time that they include something. Not to mention that this is also a crime/law related drama so they really had to sound witty.

As we all know, the Korean entertainment industry has already leveled up in terms of their cinematography. There may be ones that exceed the expectations like Goblin, but they have maintained the standard for almost all their dramas. The way they add bokeh to romantic scenes, or the way they unstabilized the camera, they all have codes for every situation. Some of it was unnoticeable since this is not really a fantasy genre drama, but with the way they mix the sound effects and the focus of the camera, it was enough to really put in the emphasis.

For the OSTs I wasn’t really able to understand but I know the tune, I love the songs “The Same Day” by Ra.D, “How about you” by CHEEZE, the jazzy feelings brought by “Eye Contact” by Kim E-Z of Ggotjam Project, the RnB vibes by “Breathing All Day” by Bumkey, and of course my baby’s “101 Reasons Why I like you” I LOVE YOU JI CHANG WOOK BABY

Thinking about what I didn’t like about this drama is very difficult because I really had a heart for this drama. Ji Chang Wook was the complete Achilles heel I don’t remember anything I didn’t like about this drama.

In this drama, I learned that it’s okay to feel bad losing someone, but you should never use it as an excuse to be vengeful to other people.

This looked interesting so would like to share with others too. Here’s what’s available on the link. (Please go to the actual site to see the shots that come from the photographer’s homemade lenses!) “I probably should have called this "Confessions of an Obsessive Lens Maker," because I must admit that I've been more than preoccupied by making lenses. At some point soon I need to actually spend time taking photos. I have no formal training in optics and am far from an expert. However, I thought I'd produce this brain-dump in case it's any use to others who may be starting down the lens-making path. Why make lenses? My real reason is that I love to experiment and I love the challenge, but there's also a practical reason: I want to experiment with certain optical effects that are difficult or extremely expensive to do with commercial lenses: spherical aberration that causes the glow of monocle lenses; non-circular apertures (and I don't mean little hearts) to produce extreme bokeh effects; and my biggest goal, tilt-shift to swing the plane of focus for selective focus and DOF effects. First lens: single element, fixed aperture, fixed focus. Any lens that focuses light (a double convex, plano convex, or positive meniscus) and has a focal length that is at least as long as the flange-to-focal-plane distance for your camera (46.5 mm for my Nikon) can be used as a camera lens. Magnifying glasses, lenses from binoculars, reading glasses, are all potential camera lenses. I got most of my lenses from SurplusShed ( www.surplusshed.com/ ), where lenses typically cost $4.00 to $10.00. Since I wanted to play with a lens with a very fast focal ratio, I ordered a positive meniscus with an advertised focal length of 65 mm and a diameter of 47 mm (price: $6). This should theoretically produce a fast focal ratio of 65/47 or about f/ 1.4. As it turned out, SurplusShed's measurement of the focal length was a bit off. The actual focal length of this lens turned out to be about 45 mm. Interestingly, at a diameter of 47 mm, this lens exactly fits in my Nikon lens mount without falling into the camera. Even so, with a 45 mm focal length, it would not focus to infinity. The maximum focus distance was about 10 feet. On the plus side, a 45 mm focal length meant that this lens was theoretically faster than f/ 1.0. And so, I decided to call this lens the antipinhole. the antipinhole First results: optical aberrations. As I stated, with the lens resting in the lens mount, the focus was fixed at about 10 feet. The images were about a half a stop brighter than my Nikkor 50 mm at f/ 1.4 so I don't think I quite achieved f/ 1.0 but it was measurably faster than f/ 1.4. But the big surprise was low contrast and very large halos around any bright objects. And unlike what you might expect from a lens at about f/ 1.2, there is no thin plane of focus that snaps in. Instead, there seems to be a very broad area from about 7 feet to 14 feet that has nearly the same degree of focus. Of course, the low contrast, halos, and soft focus can all be put to good use as long as you are not looking for the crisp images produced by commercial lenses. home All of the distortions I mentioned above can be largely explained by the spherical aberration in this lens. Parallel rays of light passing through the lens near the center come to focus as expected at the focal length. However, light rays passing through the lens toward the edge focus at a different distance. spherical aberration in the antipinhole This can also be seen in the following photo. The center of the lens magnifies as expected, but notice what happens as you move outward. The field become increasingly blurry and lines that should be parallel are not even close (indicating pincushion distortion). aberrations Spherical aberration is the largest cause of distortion on this lens but it is not the only cause. Color fringing (noticeable as blue and/or red fringes at high contrast transitions between black and white) from chromatic aberration is also present, and is caused by the fact that for a lens like this the focal length for short wavelengths (blue) is different than for long wavelengths (red). Next lens: Using an achromat to address chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration can be significantly reduced by using achromatic lenses, which are made by combining a convex lens made of crown glass with a concave lens made of flint glass. Fortunately, inexpensive achromats are readily available. In searching for a large diameter achromat with a focal length between 70 and 90 mm (to give me some buffer beyond the 46.5 mm flange-to-focal-plane distance so that I could insure infinity focus), I found one at (you guessed it) Surplus Shed with a focal length of 75 mm and a diameter of 53.5. This time the specs were correct as advertised. Once again, spherical aberration resulted in soft, "glowing" images when the lens was used wide open (f/ 1.5). wide open As the lens was stopped down, the glow was reduced. Here's a shot at f/ 10. closed Mechanics: connection to the camera; adjustable focus; adjustable aperture. The mechanics, or plumbing, involved in making lenses tuned out to be every bit as challenging as the optics. Rather than attaching all my lens components together permanently, I opted for a reusable, interchangeable-parts approach. Fortunately, I already had a set of Nikon K rings. One side of the K2 ring mounts to the camera and the other side has a thread that fits 52 mm filters. This 52 mm thread is a convenient standard to use for quickly connecting multiple lenses, spacers, focusers, and diaphragms into a working lens (and then disassembling it for the next experiment). Here is my 75 mm lens along with some aperture rings. Note that the achromat was friction mounted (thanks to a layer of masking tape) to three 58 mm rings that were recycled from some junk filters. A 52 to 58 mm step up ring allows this lens to fit my 52 mm standard. (By the way, I've found two good sources for step-up/step-down rings and cheap filters to make lens mounts: CameraGear.com and KEH.com) homemade 75 mm lens and paper diaphragms Macro: easy for the DIY lens maker. Macro photography is one area where cheap homemade lenses can compete with expensive commercial ones. Generally, for macro photography, you don’t need or want fast lenses. I find I usually use f/ 16 or higher. Even a simple achromat stopped down to f/ 16 can be pretty sharp. Also, adjustable focus, though certainly nice to have, is not a necessity. Precise focus can be attained by adjusting the distance between the camera and the subject. Finally, extreme close up is not a problem. If you want to get closer, just add another spacer or extension tube. The same 75 mm achromat that produced such soft images wide open, produced this shot at f/ 32. Telephoto: also within reach. You may not be able to make a well-corrected 300 mm f/ 2.8 lens, but a decent telephoto lens in the 150 – 300 mm range is quite doable as long as you don't mind staying above f/ 8. Of course, if you consider aberration a "feature" rather than a defect, then single element lenses as fast as f/ 4 are no problem. Telephoto lenses absolutely need some kind of focuser, and an adjustable diaphragm is certainly a nice feature. Fortunately, building a simple lens with a focal length over 150 mm gives you lots of room between the lens and the mount for these items. I "recycled" a helical focuser from an old junk lens, and found an old iris diaphragm for $3 at a local surplus shop. I attached rings from junk filters to both of these so I could use them in my interchangeable system. I attached these items to a 191 mm achromat ($9 from SurplusShed) and I had a working lens. homemade 191 mm lens And the results of a quick lens test. lens test Time for multiple element lenses. As much as I was enjoying my simple lenses, I wanted more. My next goal was a fast lens (f/ 2 or better) with a focal length of less than 100 mm, complete with a focuser and variable aperture. Such a lens could be used as the basis for a tilt-shift lens. It was time to investigate multi-element lenses. Starting with two positive lenses (double convex, plano convex, positive meniscus, or positive achromat), what focal length results from the combination? For example, what happens when two lenses with focal lengths of 60 mm are combined? The resulting combination has a focal length of approximately 30 mm or half the focal length of one lens. combining two positive lenses The general formula to compute the effective focal length of two lenses is: F = (f1 x f2) / (f1 + f2 - d) Another critical factor for DIY lens makers is the distance from the second lens to the focal plane. This is called the back focal length (BFL). If the BFL is too small, there won't be enough room for the diaphragm, focuser and flange-to-focal-plane distance. On the other hand, if the BFL is too large, the lens may be unmanageably long. The BFL is computed via: BFL = (f2 x (d - f1)) / (d - (f1 + f2)) A camera lens made from two positive lenses doesn't really give us a great advantage over a camera lens made from one positive lens. However, there is one small advantage: The space in between the lenses is a convenient place to put the diaphragm. If you work your calculations carefully, you can save a few precious mm of back focus distance. (By the way, some early lens designs such as the Rapid Rectilinear and the Orthoscopic Doublet were made from two positive achromats with a diaphragm in between.) Adding negative lens elements. The truly interesting thing about the equations above is that the values of f1 and f2 do not need to be positive. Combining a negative lens (double concave, plano concave, negative meniscus, or negative achromat) with a positive lens produces a combination with the focal length greater than the positive lens alone. For example: combining a 100 mm positive lens with a –120 mm negative lens with a distance between them of 60 mm produces: F = (100 x –120) / (100 + -120 – 60) F = 150 mm Note that the order of the lenses does not matter in determining the combined focal length. However, it gets much more interesting when we calculate the BFL. In this case the order matters a great deal. BFL (100, -120) = (-120 x (60 – 100)) / (60 – (100 + -120)) BFL (100, -120) = 60 mm BFL (-120, 100) = (100 x (60 – -120)) / (60 – (-120 + 100)) BFL (-120, 100) = 225 mm Hello! So either way we order the lenses we get a focal length of 150 mm, but if we put the positive lens first we get a back focus distance of 60 mm, and if we put the negative lens first we get a back focus distance of 225 mm. This could be quite handy. In fact the first case (positive then negative) is key to making telephoto lenses that are not unmanageably long, and the second case (negative then positive) is key to making short focal length lenses fit the flange-to-focal-plane distance. Armed with this information, it's time to play. With a goal of producing a lens of intermediate focal length (around 100 mm) with a BFL sufficient for a focuser and/or some tilt-shift device, I pieced together a three lens combination based on parts I had on hand. In this case, that meant a negative achromat (-500 mm), a positive achromat (191 mm), an iris diaphragm recycled from a very old Ilex #4 Syncro shutter, and another positive achromat (165 mm). I think Rube Goldberg would be proud. homemade 6-element, 3-group lens Shorter focal length lenses would have gotten me closer to my goal, however this combination tested out at about 135 mm. The diaphragm allowing me to go from about f/ 2 to f/ 20. The real fun was about to begin because this combination gave me enough room for a tilt-shift "bag" MacGyvered together from black felt, a body cap, a lens back-cap, hot glue and binder clips. It isn't pretty. homemade lens with tilt-shift bag Now the next challenge: shooting with it. I have a long way to go to master the use of the tilt-shift lens. The effect I am most interested in is the lens tilt that swings the plane of focus so it is no longer parallel to the front of the lens. One obvious result is the ability to take a scene with a number of objects all at equal distance from the camera and, by tilting the lens, place the focus on only one of them. This first test shot was my attempt to do just that. tilt test Another tilt effect that I hope to master is the ability to swing the plane of focus such that objects at different distances are sharp. We have a hard time to wake up. May be because we were too tired the day before. So, we just bearly make it to the breakfast cut off time. Hahaha.

The food is simple. But enough for us to eat.

Wow, the restaurant selling Tottori crab. I have never seen crabs has so many black dots. This is the marker of Tottori crab.

龙见台

We start our journey by driving out towards the Sand Dunes direction. It will takes 1 hour to go to that place.

The first stop we stopped is 龙见台. It’s a beach, that has a car park and a coffee restaurant.

It is always fantastic feeling to see a beach.

As usual, Kay does not like direct sun light. So, he uses his camel that he just bought at one of the highway stopover to cover his eyes.

I also wanted to take a picture here.

This is the place and the landmark.

Look at the sky. So blue. So, hopefully tonight has better luck to see the stars. Later at night, I was wrong. The clouds came in so fast and covered the whole sky around 9pm.

White Rabbit Beach & The Surfers

We then reach another beach. White Rabbit beach. 白兔海滩。

And welcome Kay Kay in the picture. He is back facing the sun. That is why he can open his eyes.

It is a very nice sandy beach.

I made them sky jump, but the effect not so good. Using my iPhone to do the job.

Spotted a surfer here. Not come meh???

Oh, there are two more surfers in the water.

They were in the water for long time. And they try to catch the wave. And finally, he made it.

Most of the time, he just body surfing.

And here the go out to the sea again.

Finally they retired the surf and go back to the car park. Smoking and resting. So, they are the surfer yuppee I suppose.

Love the bokeh. I am glad that I brought along my trusted 100-400mm telephoto lens.

Why do you think I can take very close up shots of the surfers. Of course using maximum zoom, the only regret is I forgot to bring my x2 adapter. hahaha

White Rabbit Shrine

Opposite the beach is the car park. Beside the car park is the White Rabbit Shrine.

Why this shrine is there.

As this is the sand dune area. So there is a sand sculpture here too.

Every where you can see the rabbit stone statue.

This is a nice pose.

A nice picture for the three of them.

There is a place for you to wash hand, pray and drink the holly clear stream water.

Quite nice to drink.

There are instruction to teach you how to drink.

There is this pond here too. In Chinese it says no gain no minus pond. Does it mean the water here always at the same water level?

Sand Dune Art Museum

We continue our journey. That is why I said, renting a car is so fun and so good. Because you can see more things.

And we are finally here. We have not eaten. But let’s visit the museum first.

This is a fantastic museum. They have different exhibit every year.

All the sand sculpture is done by these international team. Wow. A lot of hard work.

Sand Sculpture of South Asians is 2019 theme.

This Gandhi sand sculpture is done by this Russian Mr. Pavel Mylinkov. It looks so real.

I cannot believe all these were done using sands.

Camel Ride

Across the road is the sand dune. Basically it is dessert, a very small one with some dunes.

Kind of strange to find sand dune in Japan, but here you are.

Let’s sky jump here.

Sorry Kay Kay, this year we didn’t plan for a skiing trip. So, you could not see any snow. But we have sand.

And he loves to run on the sand.

Although it looks small, from one place to another also takes some time.

That’s the sand dune. See how small the people are?

Now, when you walk on it, you will find it quite big actually.

So, we need to ride camel first.

And they charge for taking photo of the camel too. So, please ask if you can take photo.

So, in order to take photo of the camel, we paid for the kids to ride a camel.

It would be cheaper for both to ride on the same camel.

And we can take picture of it.

They have ride horses before. So, riding a camel is the first time experience for them.

And Kay insists to bring the camel soft-toy he bought just now with him on a camel.

Wow, now I can see that how important a camel is to the dessert people.

Sand Dunes & Climbing it

Here comes the next challenge.

And the kids can’t wait to climb it.

It is a dessert but not too hot. The sea breeze make it very pleasant.

While we are happily taking photos, the kids has already reach the middle of the sand dunes.

Really no joke. Big.

Look to the left of the very steep hill, there are actually brave people climbing that. It must be more than 50 degrees inclination.

Of course, I am a heart patient so I cannot climb that!!! hahaha

No joke. Very steep. But climbable.

She did slip a few times. Hopefully she won’t roll down.
