breaking down Ace of Diamond - the "Hero's Journey."
Using the model/guide presented by Overly Sarcastic Productions in their youtube video Trope Talk: The Hero's Journey, I will attempt to discuss how Sawamura Eijun's story in DnA is his Hero's Journey to becoming an ace pitcher in the Japanese HIgh School Baseball environment.
Blue from OSP put forward the 12 basic parts of the Hero's Journey Cycle. The illustration below will be our reference. I simplified a graph made by Signy Wilson in order to match OSP's less rigid guide.
disclaimer: I am by no means any kind of expert. I was just fascinated when I learned about the Hero's Journey as a general trope/framework when it came to writing stories. I want to apply what I learned by breaking down the story created by Terajima Yuuji in Ace of Diamond.
Tumblr media
A. ORDINARY WORLD
STAGE 1. THE HERO IN HIS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Hero: Sawamura Eijun. Captain and Ace Pitcher of middle school baseball team. He has no formal training in baseball whatsoever but was the one who gathered and convinced his friends to start a baseball club. He's the best player in their small team. Good at sports but bad at academics .
He is generally a baseball idiot and quite a naive/simple guy with a strong heart. He does not have any idea what competitive and pro baseball looks like because not only does he not have experience but also he does not watch the broadcasts on tv/radio at all.
Ordinary World of the Hero: rural town in Nagano Prefecture, where Sawamura formed a small baseball team with his childhood friends. Acording to him, as long as they all stay together they can always play baseball anywhere.
Tumblr media
STAGE 2. THE CALL TO ADVENTURE
2.1 Problem/why hero's ordinary world is going to crumble: - He lessened his chances of being scouted/accepted in a good baseball school after he btchslapped an entire opponent team and the umpires in their first and only match as middle school team in Saitama Stadium.
He also has low chance of being accepted into the high school in their area (where his friends are all going to) because he struggles with his academics a lot.
Unless he does something he won't be able to be together with his friends and/or play baseball at all.
2.2 Caller of the adventure - Takashima Rei pursues Sawamura into Nagano Prefecture in order to scout him as a sports scholar for Seido High School, a baseball powerhouse school located in the West Division of Tokyo Prefecture.
2.3 medicine/ solution to hero's crumbling world: being a sports scholar for Seido. This would solve almost all of Sawamura's highschool enrollment problem and also give him the chance to play as much baseball as he wants.
STAGE 3. REFUSAL TO THE CALL
3.1 reluctance to go: Sawamura refuses to leave Nagano despite Rei's "sales pitch" to him and his family. He doesn't want to leave his friends just to play baseball in a stronger school far away because he had promised his friends that they would always stick together.
3.2 hero punished for this - his grandpa literally smacks/slaps him in being stupid and doubting his friends.!!! / technically circumstances are already punishing him for being a hotblooded baseball idiot in the first place.
3.3 do you think you have a choice - this is probably the only chance he'll get to play baseball with all his strength AND finish highschool.
Tumblr media
B. EXTRAORDINARY / UNKNOWN WORLD
Venturing out into more competitive/pro baseball is a world beyond him. It's scary and unknown and he'd rather defeat bigger teams than leave his friends.
STAGE 4. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD
4.1 crossing physical threshold - Rei persuades him to at least check the school out with his own eyes. They leave Tokyo together for one visit.
4.2. crossing a metaphorical threshold - in that visit, sawamura, picks a fight with a senior who's bound for baseball drafts, works together with a nationally acclaimed catcher in defeating the senior player, thus changing his worldview because he had so much fun.
4.2. conscious and irreversible decision - Because of the experience he goes home conflicted. His family encourages him in their own way to follow his guts and heart and go to Tokyo.
Tumblr media
STAGE 5. REALM OF ADVENTURE
5.1 hero learns to navigate the unknown world - Sawamura learns the harsh realities of being in a baseball school once he actually starts to live there. Our boy also gets educated in Baseball and Pitching 101. He also finds out the true personality of the catcher he played with before.
5.2 meeting allies/rivals/mentors - he learns about the team better when he meets a whole bunch of people: batchmates, coaches and senpais. He builds interesting dynamics with all of them.
5.3 trials and initial failures - Sawamura undergoes difficult initial training and is barely allowed to play in matches.
5.4 meeting enemies - Sawamura being allowed to play as relief pitcher in the games and face talented pitchers and scary batters mostly in tense situations.
5.5 growth, new skills - Sawamura grows with each match, thus bolstering his confidence. Sometimes he falters but he learns from his mistakes.
5.6 first major success - striking out scary batters with each new thing he learns.
5.7 major challenge that leads to downfall - seido vs inashiro finals match where he goes in full of confidence and courage but then he and his team gets defeated in a devastating way.
Tumblr media
STAGE 6. BELLY OF THE WHALE
6.1 lowest point of hero where hero physically or metaphorically goes down - one month after their major defeat, a lot of intense practice matches and change in team dynamics, the team find out that Sawamura has the YIPS. This condition took away Sawamura's ability to pitch in his trademark style/ the only thing he was good at.
6.2 hero's darkest hour - without the ability to pitch, Sawamura questions his reality and why he is still on the team.
6.3 Face and overcome inner demons - with a lot of help from allies and mentors, Sawamura finds a way to bring back a bit of his ability.
Tumblr media
STAGE 7. ROAD OF TRIALS
7.1 Discarding old self - In the duration of his downfall and eventual healing, Sawamura turns to books, meditation and becomes even more careful in maintaining his form and body.
7.2 Accepting the new role - instead of fixating on the ace position like before, Sawamura is just glad that he is still allowed to pitch as relief.
7.3 Finding path out of the belly of the whale/The road back - After figuring out a solution to fix his pitching, he focuses on it and regains some of his ability. Sawamura is then allowed to play in matches. Just like before, he improves little by little as he recovers from each failure. He gains fresher mindset and new weapons, thus becoming an even stronger pitcher than he ever was before.
7.4 more trials - they face new opponent schools and old but improved opponents which test the best of Sawamura and the team's ability
Tumblr media
STAGE 8. PRE SHOWDOWN BREATHER
every major match in ace of diamond has this part of the story but usually the most critical breather episode is the one before the final match.
8.1 show humanity of other characters - Somethng bad happens to the other mc without Sawamura knowing. This could absolutely wreck their chances of winning the final match. This shows that the other guys are not 100% invincible after all.
8.2 last chance to relax. - calm before the storm. It is also the time where they finalize sawamura's weapons.
8.3 quiet moment to reminisce - usually happens before each match. However the night before the finals was the major one because their old senpais went to visit their practice and encourage them.
STAGE 9. CLIMAX / STEPPING UP TO THE CHALLENGE
9.1 Final Showdown - Sawamura helps in the team defense with the best of his ability and weapons and he succeeds. Their team eventually wins Fall Tournament even with a few setbacks.
9.2 Apotheosis - Sawamura's worldview changed once he realises that even with his improvement and skill, his goal of being the ace is still out of reach for him.
9.3 Ultimate Boon - Sawamura gets to be a pivotal member of their baseball team and can play baseball as much as he wants with his team.
Tumblr media
STAGE 7. ROAD OF TRIALS start again after the Fall Tournament Act 1 because Sawamura faces new challenges in Ace of Diamond Act 2.
Meiji Jingu Tournament - Play in matches without Miyuki
WInter camp and break - Intense Physical Training and development and improvement of his weapons which he will use and improve on throughout the rest of Act 2.
Spring Koshien where he realises that he has to do more in order to surpass the current ace which was Furuya.
Start of New Term/ Practice Matches - Sawamura and co. meets their new kouhai and team dynamics shift once again.
Spring Tournament / Summer Tournament - Sawamura meets old foes and new enemies. He also becomes the Ace Pitcher of the team, which adds more pressure on his part.
Tumblr media
ACT 2 STAGE 8. PRE SHOWDOWN BREATHER
This is the big and long one before Summer Tournament Finals match where injuries and problems were discussed and feelings were explored.
ACT 2 STAGE 9. CLIMAX
Final (Or most hyped and awaited rematch) Seido vs Inashiro in order to qualify for Summer Koshien Nationals.
**everything after this point will be prediction and just my opinion
STAGES 7-9 start again
Koshien Nationals Arc.
STAGE 10. CROSSING THE RETURN THRESHOLD
Miyuki/3rd years retirement/graduation. Sawamura and his batch will have to lead the team.
STAGE 11. THE REWARD
Sawamura gets to play with his team as ace pitcher.
STAGE 12 / STAGE 1. THE HERO IN HIS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Sawamura may become both ace and captain, same as his role back in his middle school team, albeit in a stronger school. Even if he won't be the next captain, as ace he will still be in a strong leadership position.
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION
That's how Ace of Diamond is written in the style of A HERO'S JOURNEY.
Act 1 writing especially followed the trope quite rigidly.
Notes:
I still don't want Sawamura to be the next captain. I hope that does not happen. However if it does, it means the story will have gone back full circle. That would be quite poetic ngl.
Gotta applaud Terajima's pacing. Can you believe that the story only reached its lowest and most pivotal point at around episode 70 of the anime???? thank godt that after ep 63 I read spoilers about yips arc in tv tropes or else i would have dropped the series completely.
I had difficulty in classifying the events after the climax stage into hero's journey stages because technically sawamura has not gone "home" yet. Moreover the challenges and trials just kept on piling up after Fall Tournament.
In this whole story, Sawamura has experienced only one true "Belly of the Whale stage" during his YIPS arc. I don't think he really came to a low point in Act 2 other than his first official match as Ace Pitcher. I treated that in the same vein as the effects of Raichi's first homerun off Sawamura back in Act 1.
I realized that having stages 7-9 recur starting from Meiji Jingu to the current summer tournament is what made reading Act 2 quite frustrating for me. That's at least 5-6 arcs of endless roller coaster ride loops.
I consider Miyuki's departure to be the "CROSSING THE RETURN THRESHOLD" moment because playing with him was the major reason for Sawamura's decision to study and play in Tokyo. Something will change Sawamura when this eventually happens.
As Blue from OSP said, the Hero's Journey is just a general guide/framework to writing stories. It is flexible, writers don't even have to use it or all of its parts to make a good story. Terajima just seemed to have adopted A LOT of the hero's journey trope in his baseball series.
I wanted to add more pictures tbh but tumblr is a killjoy :(
This was a fun thought exercise. There were probably even some parts which I have used the tropes wrongly. Please feel free to dispute me.
I talked about Sawamura's mentors here (x).

Tumblr media
Genre: Min Yoongi x oc
Warnings: none
Word Count: 4.2k
I have a surprise for you guys in this chapter!!! 😊😊 Aaaaand we’re all set up and ready to go for the finale!
2 Months Later
Anacortes, Washington, USA
The distant sound of a bell pulls me back to reality, and I turn to face the wind. Waves are pushing their way onto the shore, the choppy water fighting for my attention.
I watch as the ferry grows ever closer before putting my earbuds into my ears to answer my incoming phone call.
“Funny, I was just thinking about you,” I smile as I close my eyes.
“Really? What a coincidence. What are you up to right now?”
“Just about to board the ferry. You?”
“I’m going to head to bed soon.”
“Wow, so early. You’ve become so disciplined!”
Yoongi’s breathy laugh fills my ears and I can almost picture him rolling his eyes if I close my eyes tightly enough. “I’m assuming you’re not available to facetime?”
Frowning, I shake my head even though he can’t see me. “No, too many people around. You’ll just have to deal with the beautiful sound of my voice.”
“That’s what I was afraid of.”
It’s been two months since I last saw Yoongi outside of Bong-cha’s apartment. The chill that comes with currently residing in the northwestern United States is almost the same as I felt that morning when we said goodbye.
‘Young Rising’ came out just over a month ago, and it’s received a lot of success. Thankfully it was just enough to help me land a role that is already receiving speculation for possibly being a critically acclaimed role.
It wasn’t the one I originally wanted, that role went to Bryce Dallas Howard. I suppose I’ll have to try for a 1700’s romance some other time. This time around I get to play the daughter of one of the first lighthouse keepers in the United States and all the crazy events that unfold. It’s fun, and getting to take the ferry out to the San Juan islands here in the state of Washington is an added bonus.
My favorite part of the role? Every morning I get to sit here and watch the ocean and talk to Yoongi.
“Rude, but I’m not surprised. Isn’t it barely midnight there? You really are heading off to bed early.”
“Yeah, it’s midnight. What can I say? It was a long day and I’m exhausted.”
Now that I listen closer, I notice the hint of tiredness in his tone. “Why? What happened today?”
Yoongi sighs as I get up to board the ferry. Another great thing about being here in Washington? It’s cold and rainy enough that nobody bats an eye at me. I’m decked out in my raincoat and my beanie is pulled down low. During this time of year there aren’t many tourists either, so most mornings it’s just the ferryman and I. Today there are a couple of small groups milling about, though.
All the better. It gives me an excuse to not facetime Yoongi and have him laugh at my bundled up state. Which, for the record, he finds hilarious.
“Promise not to laugh?”
“Promise.”
There’s a second hesitation before he speaks up again. “I miss you.”
It’s a blow straight to the heart, and I cling to the railing so as to not fall overboard. We try not to dwell on our current state too much, things are complicated enough. Still, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one struggling with this.
“Why would I laugh at that?”
“I don’t know, you like making fun of me and how weirdly sentimental I can get-”
“Soft. That’s the word you’re looking for.”
“...right. How could I forget.”
“I miss you too, Yoongs. A lot.”
It’s silent on the other end of the phone for a little while, so I just lean up against the railing and watch as the ferry begins to edge out to sea. Once again I close my eyes against the crashing waves and try to convince myself that I’m sitting in the genius lab or making a mess of things in the kitchen.
How could a span of less than a week affect me so much? It’s a question that I’ve come back to many times over the past couple of weeks. Occasionally I get a moment of understanding. Sometimes that understanding comes late at night as I cuddle up in bed, propping my phone up to chat with Yoongi as he sits at his desk in the genius lab and tells me about what he’s working on.
Just watching him mumble incoherent things under his breath and seeing his eyes flit back to his phone to check that I’m still there makes me realize that there’s so much going on here. So much going on whilst being so far apart.
At least the media frenzy has died down a bit. Sure, there’s still a lot of theories tumbling around, but the mobs of heartbroken fans seems to have lessened significantly.
“Are you sure that’s everything, though? What else have you got going on?”
“What, me missing you is not enough?”
I chuckle into the phone. “Nope.”
“Fine, you caught me. We’re finishing up the final touches on the mixtape and I always just get really stressed before a release, you know? Like you did the night before ‘Young Rising’ premiered?”
Shuddering at the memory I groan. “Ugh, don’t remind me. But what is it exactly about this mixtape that has you so nervous? I mean, this isn’t the first time you’ve released one. Maybe whatever helped you de-stress last time will help you this time around, too.”
There’s a long pause but I wait patiently for him to speak. The island is just coming into view now, I’ve probably got about fifteen more minutes before I’m officially on the clock and have to hang up.
I hate that part.
“I’m not so sure...it’s different this time around.”
I frown. “What’s so different? You’re even more loved?”
A wry laugh on his part. “No, not that. It’s just...this mixtape, these songs...they’re even more personal this time around. Sure, I’ve talked about some pretty personal things on my previous mixtapes, but this time around the entire mixtape is personal.”
That’s news to me. Ever since Yoongi changed the concept of the album he’s kept everything under lock and key. He told me he kept most of the tracks, ‘My First Mistake’ obviously being one of them. Other than that, though, I have no idea what to expect.
“Yoongs...I think that will make this mixtape your best one yet. Really. People will be able to relate to it, and they’ll love you even more for it. Just, get some sleep tonight. You’ve worked your hardest - don’t try to brush it all off, you’ve nearly worked yourself to the ground over this mixtape! - and that’s all you can do. I’m absolutely positive it’ll be great.”
“Thanks, Car. So what scenes are you doing today?”
We get lost in the conversation for the remainder of the ferry ride before suddenly the ferry is coming to a stop. I hurry off the boat, the tell-tale change of tone tipping Yoongi off to what I need to do.
“Talk to you later?”
“Yeah, sounds great. Get some sleep!”
Yoongi chuckles. “Will do. Have a great day.”
I sign off the phone and roll my shoulders. One of the producers, Melissa, is waiting for me in a little golf cart.
“Hey Cara, ready for the day?”
Grinning at her, I jump into the passenger seat. “Definitely.”
🌙
It’s the middle of the night when I’m awoken from my slumber, and I groan as I contemplate just turning my phone off. It was a late night, I’ve probably only been asleep for a couple of hours at this point.
When I see who’s calling, though, I pick up.
“Bong-cha?” I ask blearily. “What’s up?”
“Have you listened to it yet?!”
I hiss as Bong-cha screams into my ear. “What are you talking about? Did you and Jimin finally kiss or something?”
“No, you idiot. Yoongi’s mixtape!”
My eyes widen and suddenly I’m completely awake. “His mixtape? I-it’s out? When?”
“It just dropped like an hour ago! Didn’t he tell you? I mean, I get that he wanted to surprise everybody, but I thought he’d at least tell you.”
I’m already on my music app, searching for Agust D. When I finally hit search, I scream involuntarily.
“That little punk! He didn’t even tell me!”
“Wait, Cara!”
“What?”
“Just, listen to it.”
“That’s what I’m trying to do, weirdo.”
“No, but really listen to it. I mean, it’s about you.”
My chest stops rising as my air gets cut off. “What do you mean it’s about me? We already knew about ‘My First Mistake’-”
“No, not just that track. I mean it’s all about you. Just look at the name of it! Isn’t it a little weird that he didn’t stick to his m.o. and title it ‘D-3’?”
I was in such a rush to click on his profile that I didn’t even bother to look at the title. When I do, I come gasping up for air.
Mine.
Written there in big, bold letters is the word mine.
“That doesn’t mean any-”
“Nuh-uh, you listen to the mixtape and then we’ll hash out the details. Got it?”
“Fine. Call you in the morning?”
“Isn’t it already morning for you?”
“Yeah, 4!”
“Right. Yeah, call me later.”
Clicking off the call, I take a deep breath to steel myself before clicking on the album. 8 tracks stare back up at me, most of them I recognize from that first night in the genius lab. The leading track is ‘My First Mistake’, which makes me smile. When my eyes trail down to the final song, I can’t help but click on it.
My Last Mistake. Turning the volume up, I sit back against my headboard and listen. And then, note by note, I fall under his spell.
Yoongi’s heartbroken voice talks about details of his life, how he goes by many names. The world knows him by Suga. His true fans know his other name, August D. Min Yoongi controls the strings of those two personas. A heavy beat pounds out the words alongside him.
Then the music slows, becomes calmer. Clearer.
In the most tormented voice he can manage, Yoongi talks about a girl that called him Yoongs. He talks about a girl driving under the stars that called him Yoongs and how in that moment, he decided that none of the other names mattered anymore, just so long as he could hear her say it one more time.
As the song falls from its crescendo, Yoongi brings up his last mistake.
“What’s your last mistake, Yoongs?” I whisper, hoping for an answer.
He answers it a moment later, the same melody from ‘My First Mistake’ being played out, only this time it’s on the guitar rather than the piano.
He’s reminded of his last mistake every time a plane flies overhead and he can’t run fast enough to catch it.
🌙
The entire mixtape is hauntingly beautiful.
As I finish listening to “Naksan”, a song set Naksan park, and what I assume to be the gazebo that overlooked Seoul, I lean my head back and sigh.
There is so much we don’t say. There is so much that Yoongi has never said, but now I’m beginning to realize why he was so nervous about this mixtape.
Here, crammed into these eight songs that talk about everything from t-shirts to being oceans apart, Yoongi says everything he never could before. It’s obvious, painfully so. He didn’t try to cover anything up.
I am so dead.
Yet, I can’t find it in myself to care. The only thing I wish I could do right now is show up at his apartment and sit down on his couch. Maybe eat some food, and watch as he fumbles for an explanation to this mixtape that is no longer a mixtape but more a cry out into the void.
And of course, don’t even get me started on the title track. The song that the album is named after, “Mine”.
In it Yoongi recalls his dreams of having a big car and house, and how he gets to call all those things his now. He has it all, essentially. And yet, the one thing he wants more than anything is far from him.
‘I have it all, I hear them say it. I have it all, they chant over again. When will they realize that it means nothing to me, if I can’t call you mine?’
Dragging myself to check Twitter, I see what the number one trending topic is right now.
#Mine
And in second place?
#CaraisMine
Somehow, I can never quite make it to first place. How disappointing.
Groaning as I realize that the sun is about to come up, I linger over Yoongi’s contact information.
One call. That’s all it would take. A single phone call, and maybe everything would change. But what would I even say?
Hi, it’s the girl that’s ridiculously in love with you. Do you feel the same way? Great! Let’s end our careers and live in Fiji!
As enticing as that sounds as I watch the rain pouring down, I know that it’s unrealistic. I’m here, caught up in some strange, long-distance relationship that’s technically not a relationship.
And Yoongi’s there, hopefully receiving all the praise he deserves for coming out with yet another great mixtape.
So I just let the dim light from my phone fade out before slipping back down under the covers. I know what Yoong is thinking now.
Ball’s in my court. But how on earth do I return it?
🌙
Seoul, South Korea
“And she still hasn’t said anything about it?”
Yoongi knows that Taehyung is trying really hard to understand his current predicament, but if he asks him if he’s heard from Cara one more time, he’s going to lose his mind.
“No.”
“Have you reached out to her?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Sighing, Yoongi rubs his hands over his face. “First, because it’s only 8 o’clock in the morning over there. Second, I basically just told the world about my feelings for her, I think I can give her a little space to breathe before jumping on her.”
Taehyung plops down beside Yoongi, his eyes wide. “You’re really stressed, aren’t you?”
Somehow the question makes Yoongi laugh. “You think?” He feels restless; he has for the past two months. He thought releasing the mixtape would diminish that feeling, but instead it’s been heightened to the point that he can’t hardly sit still anymore.
Which is saying a lot, because Yoongi loves sitting still.
“Hyung?”
“Hm.”
“I think you should borrow my car and go for a drive or something. Just get out for a while. You’ve been cooped up in this studio for weeks; it’s messing with your head.”
Sometimes Yoongi forgets how much everyone cares about him. It’s in times like these that he remembers. Without saying much else he takes Taehyung’s keys that he extends to him and heads out.
When he gets into the car, he doesn’t know where he’s going. His mind is filled with worry and doubts and worst of all, regret. Was he too blind in his feelings that he overlooked Cara’s? After all, maybe she’s listening to the mixtape right this very moment and wondering why he would write something like this.
Maybe she hasn’t called him yet because she’s trying to come up with a way to let him down easy.
Yoongi drives and drives, turning up the music so as to drown out the thoughts in his head. He drives on and on, clueless to the fact that it’s the middle of the night and he should really be heading back to the apartment now.
When he parks before a lit path that leads up, Yoongi realizes that his body knew this entire time where he was going.
Without questioning it further, he hops out of the car and shrugs on his coat and mask. It’s late enough that hopefully most people will have had the sense to go home.
As Yoongi climbs up the path he only passes a couple of people; a couple that are too tangled up in each other’s embrace to even notice him. The path continues ever upward until he’s panting, but he’s grateful for the burn in his lungs. For a brief moment, his mind isn’t consumed by the what ifs of his current situation.
As Yoongi clears the final steps, his gaze immediately turns to the gazebo just down a ways. It’s the same as before, the night a similar one to that night when he watched Cara from afar before mustering up the courage to go talk to her.
Tonight there is one major difference. As Yoongi edges closer, there’s a tightness in his chest. There’s some part of him that half-expects Cara to appear, leaning up against one of the pillars and looking out at the city.
As Yoongi steps into the gazebo, that wish vanishes into thin air.
It’s empty.
Cara is not here. Yoongi is, though. Which has proved to be the most miserable thing in the world over the past two months. Cara is gone, but somehow Yoongi is still here and seeing her everywhere he goes.
The songwriting and production process is enough to make anyone go a little insane. Usually, once the project is finished, Yoongi feels like he can finally breathe again. He’s able to enjoy the fruits of his labors.
Not tonight.
At first he laughed at himself, back when he’d first started learning about Cara from Bong-cha and curiosity overcame him. He thought it was silly of him to want to learn everything about her and what it was that made her tick. There was just something about her that made Yoongi dive right in.
Of course, the boys had noticed. Even Bong-cha, who hadn’t known him for very long, had noticed the difference Cara had made. That was before they even met. Before any of this had even started.
Yoongi knows his place. His place as one of the most famous stars in the world, his place in the group’s dynamic, his place among his family. His place among ARMY. Yet, when he met Cara, it was like the ground disappeared under his feet and he’s been falling ever since.
He used to come to Naksan park often and just think. He’s not one for hiking around outdoors, but something about the view and the beautiful architecture of the gazebo and old city walls that line the path have helped him think.
He used to stand where Cara stood, and think about everything. However there was one topic that he tried to avoid at all costs: love. It wasn’t because he didn’t believe in love or didn't want it; if he’s learned anything from his time with ARMY he’s learned about love. But there was always this giant, impenetrable wall that stood between him and love.
Yoongi knows his place, and because of that clear role he has also always known that him falling in love with someone other than his fans was off the table.
That night when he came to meet Cara, he was coming to tell her just that. He was coming to tell her that he was a horrible human being that was dangerously close to breaking that unspoken rule, and he needed to mark a clear line in the sand. Friends, he had thought We can still be friends.
Yet, as he’d watched Cara head to the same spot; the same pillar he had frequented so many times, his words had gotten caught in his throat. She’d looked out over the city and Yoongi would have given anything to know what she was thinking.
Instead, he’d just asked for what so many people had been unable to give him throughout his career.
Just someone to sit in silence with.
No demands, no questions, just be together.
And as Yoongi sat swimming in his feelings, Cara’s head resting on his shoulder, he learned something about himself.
Yoongi had avoided the topic of love for so long not because he didn’t think it was appropriate for his lifestyle, but because he’d known deep down that the chances of him finding someone he was willing give everything up for were nearly nonexistent.
Cara’s hand was wrapped up in his, sharing his pocket. Quiet breathing, feeling warm despite the oppressing chill. No demanding answers, just sitting together.
He had realized that while he was looking for someone to convince him to leave everything behind, he was sitting beside someone that already understood. Someone that would never tell him to abandon it all just to be together.
He was sitting beside someone that might just be open to the possibility of being together, and would be open to the chaos that would ensue. There was no need to change everything to be together, but there would be the need to fight for that privilege of calling Cara his.
As Yoongi now steps into the gazebo and rests on the bench opposite from where they had sat, he remembers when it all started.
The night after he’d watched ‘Under Nine’, he’d felt restless and wandered up here. It was the first time in over a year that he’d come here. He knew why he didn’t bother to anymore; he didn’t feel inspired anymore when he looked out over the city.
Yoongi had seen the world, and he’d fallen out of love with it.
It was a horrible, lying, cheating thing. He’d seen too much suffering, fought so hard against it just to see evil rise up again and again.
Yet when he came up here that night after watching Cara on screen and seeing that humanity can be beautiful even in all its flaws, something amazing had happened.
He looked out over the city, and a little spark had jumped up in his heart. That night, Yoongi looked out over the world, and began to fall in love again.
Yoongi has never been very confrontational. Some may think he is simply due to his status as a rapper, but that’s never been the case. However, he is known for his undeniable work ethic. For his unending effort to obtain what he thinks he deserves.
When Yoongi placed a letter into the mail a few days ago, he was reminded of why he was going to do everything in his power to make this work.
When he looked at Cara, he thought that she deserved a chance at love, too.
Giving one last look out at the city, Yoongi gets up and stretches. There are a lot of uncertainties swirling about right now, but there is one thing he is completely certain of.
He is going to do everything in his power to give him and Cara a chance.
🌙
Anacortes, Washington, USA
I have mail.
It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve gotten mail, but I can’t fight the feeling of dread as I wonder if the awkward pleas from fans are about to start up again. There’s a single envelope addressed to me sitting on the ground in front of my hotel door, which I scoop up before heading back inside.
No work today; we’ll be taking a two week break to wait out the rainy season before picking things back up again. I’m grateful for the small reprieve, I would much rather stay cuddled up in my blankets today while I try to wrap my mind around everything.
I haven’t reached out to Yoongi yet. Granted, it’s only 10 am, but I still feel a little guilty. I just want to make sure I have my thoughts in order before I freak out, you know? After all, there’s still a chance the mixtape being about me is just a coincidence...right?
Stacey, my PR rep, just got off the phone with me. Nobody really knows where I am right now, which is good. There are perks to being holed up in a small town in the northwestern United States.
She gave me an earful on how many calls she’s received over the course of the last few hours from various magazines and gossip collectors. When she asked me if there was a statement she would like for me to relay, I blanked. Stacey just laughed and said she’d come up with some vague for the time being.
My attention returns to the item in my hand. Cautiously opening up the letter, my brows furrow as I take out a small slip of paper and a piece of thick cardstock.
Cara,
Hopefully this gets to you when it’s supposed to. I thought of just sending you an email but that seemed to detract from what I was going for. You understand, don’t you? When you told me about your break from work, I managed to pull some strings. Follow the directions on the back of this letter, I’ll be waiting for you. And no, I can’t do this over the phone. It’s an ‘in-person’ kind of thing.
Yours,
Yoongs
Flipping the letter over I frown when the directions are in French. Then, scrambling for the cardstock, my mouth drops open as I see just what Yoongi is talking about.
One boarding ticket for tomorrow morning, leaving at 10am.
Destination?
Paris.

a Thing i think people overlook, including myself, regarding Akechi and his views on the PT:
In Rank 5, Akechi asks Ren about a hero--is a hero someone who sticks to their own code of justice, or someone who does what the public wants? If you pick the first, he then follows up by wondering if that sort of hero is really just a self-righteous person, since they’re doing what no one else supports. If you pick the second, he says he’s surprised to hear that from you.
In September, thanks to Mishima being a fucking idiot (seriously, he set it up for this to happen lmao), the Phansite gains the feature of letting the random public vote on who they want the PT to target next. Instead of the PT doing their own investigation and simply reaping the rewards of attention after, they shift their focus onto the attention and chasing after anything that seems poised to keep it. They turn from heroes following their own moral code, to heroes merely doing what others demand. They willingly do this.
Addendum to thing: Makoto, to her credit, insists that the focus is on finding the Metaverse culprit. This doesn’t change the fact that the PT only first set eyes on Okumura because the poll tells them to.
And this is really the crux of the problem Akechi has with them: People with strong moral codes and the (literal) ability to see them through are always going to be dangerous when they put that power into someone else’s hands, even if it’s for the sake of a greater good.
As a sidebar: I believe they would have gone after Okumura since he was all over the news, but Mishima putting in that voting feature is what drew them to Okumura instead of their own investigation. And that is the key difference here. Shido was banking on the PT being like him, desiring public approval for their own means, and using that against them by rigging the vote on the Phan-Site.
I bring this up because I think this is a pretty important bit that makes Akechi’s views of the PT so complicated, and land on believing they are childish idiots. He not only is concerned the PT are just going to be another Shido, this time with Metaverse powers, but because they are giving up the freedom Akechi wishes he had. He has to do what others demand, and they choose to do it. Akechi has to live by a twisted code of “justice” (and remember, Shido’s name uses the same kanji as the word “justice”, so he’s always stuck serving a false justice no matter what), as he tries desperately to find a way to still pursue his own.
The PT always have the option to do what they believe in, full stop. Akechi does not.
By asking Ren whether a hero who does his own thing could truly be self-righteous, Akechi is not only reflecting on himself, he’s also wanting Ren to think this about himself. If Akechi has to have an existential crisis on what it means to be a hero, and particularly a revenge-seeking hero of justice, he wants Ren to be the one to consider such things, too. They’re equals, they’re rivals, they understand and connect with each other the way no one else can or has. It stands to reason Akechi would want Ren to consider these concepts of heroism and justice as they both navigate and survive in a corrupt society.
I don’t think many people in the fandom truly acknowledge just how much the PT fucked up not only with the Okumura voting thing, but in letting themselves get bogged down by people close to them who only wanted popularity and acclaim and said that was the way to justice. Now, I’m not saying they shouldn’t have done this in the story. Characters need flaws and stories need conflict, otherwise they’re a bland bit of nothing and boring and not a story at all. What I’m saying is that it’s frustrating that so few people in the fandom give Akechi’s critiques of the PT much thought. He’s not going on TV JUST to taunt them, nor is he JUST spouting Shido-endorsed propaganda, nor is he JUST being petty and spiteful. He’s mixing together all these things and filtering them through his own views of justice, which are that people who circumvent the law to force changes on others are dangerous.
And that’s true. (And nowhere in that comment is he implying he doesn’t think that way about himself--but people don’t seem to consider that, either.)
The PT are the closest thing to the heroes Akechi pretended to be when he was a child. His Metaverse powers are also the closest thing he has to being a hero, and yet both his powers and PT are not only corrupted by Shido, the injustice of the very society he suffers from, both the PT and Shido are threats to him.
I once. Again. Really. Wish. We had someone to speak up for Akechi in the game. Someone who reinforces his view point, his beliefs, his criticism of the PT. No one speaks up for Akechi. No one. And it’s so infuriating.
and this is also why i hate it when y’all goroboys make fun of him lmao knock it off

battle magic
a witcher, a bard, and a sorceress encounter each other on a hunt. it all goes downhill from there.
(aka jaskier may have a little combat magic. as a treat.)
this is the dumbest, most chaotic thing ive ever written. please enjoy.
Fuck, Geralt hated monster hunts.
Not the contracts he took from frightened villagers, or even those given to him by the local authorities of the bigger territories. It was the spectacles, the hunts that people flocked to for huge sums of coin and acclaim, put on by the bored and rich.
Geralt didn't hunt monsters for sport, or glory; nor to furnish bastard lords with trophies to mount over their mantles. But Geralt was a Witcher. He had a job to do, and that job didn't make enough coin to turn down the bounty on a creature he already intended to pursue.
The reports told of a monstrous beast, roaming the forested mountains that formed the border between Kaedwen and Redania. From what Geralt could tell, it sounded like a wyvern; but mutated somehow, strange and twisted. A kindred spirit, Geralt supposed, lips curving bitterly.
Whatever. The hunt began tomorrow--up the mountain and through the trees, avoiding the others as thoroughly as possible, hopefully reaching the wyvern before they could. Geralt was grateful only for the fact that the mountain was shorter than its nearby brethren.
Well. That, and the tavern at the bottom of it. Ugly and dirty, but a tavern, still. Geralt bought a drink and claimed a table in the darkest, dingiest corner of it, assuming that his demeanor was foreboding enough to dissuade those foolish enough to want to talk to him.
Apparently he needed to rethink how fucking foreboding he was, Geralt thought, darkly, given that it took naught but a half hour for some idiot to approach him. Geralt took stock of him out of his periphery; tall and lithe, clad in a ridiculous blue outfit with an instrument--a lute, maybe--strapped to his back. Handsome, enough that Geralt would bet good coin that he was also profoundly annoying.
He reached Geralt's table and struck a casual pose, to limited success. The dark, messy hair swooping over his blue eyes looked stupidly, purposely disheveled. "You know, for a man as dashing as yourself, you seem to be tragically lacking in company."
Of course Geralt wasn't lucky enough to get a regular idiot. He got one with balls to hit on a Witcher. “Fuck off.”
The man had enough sense to not sit down, but not enough to stop talking. “The name's Julian! Julian Pankratz. Just a humble bard, as you can see.” He gestured towards his lute. “My apologies for interrupting whatever deep thoughts you’re clearly entertaining, but I’ve never met a Witcher before. I can’t imagine how many stories you must have, of all of your noble deeds and, just--general heroism, I suppose." He smiled at Geralt, eyes bright and eager.
Geralt scowled, but the bard's baffling enthusiasm was sincere enough to lower his hackles. Just barely. "Well, then. Fuck off, bard."
Undeterred, Julian flashed him a saucy grin. “How about this? I’ll fuck off and leave you to your Witcherly business, once you’ve let me buy you a drink far better than the swill they’re slinging for the rest of this lot.”
Geralt swept his gaze across the room and let it fall on the bartender, who was serving everyone from the same dingy barrel. "Must've missed the menu." His voice turned mocking. "Or are you going to pull some strings? Have a lot of connections in bumfuck Redanian taverns?"
“I’ve found that purse strings are the most effective strings to pull. Well, the second-most effective.” Geralt raised an eyebrow and Julian winked and waved towards his lute once more. “Through the lute, one can reach the purse and, just as critically, the heart! Which also happens to have very pull-able strings. It’s tremendously versatile, really. The, ah, lute.”
Geralt snorted despite himself and considered his ale. It really did taste like goat piss. Geralt carefully weighed the prospect of a decent drink against being forced to suffer through the bard’s...everything. “Will you keep your mouth shut while I’m drinking?”
"I cannot, in good conscience, promise that,” Julian replied, beaming. “But! I’ll buy you an especially expensive drink as compensation for your time.” Geralt rolled his eyes, but shoved his mug towards Julian. He watched the bard dart over to the bar and chat with the bartender; the man raised his eyebrow at the coins Julian subtly slid over the counter and, to Geralt's immense consternation, pulled something out from beneath the bar and poured two mugs of it.
Julian sauntered back and took the liberty of sliding into the booth across from Geralt, looking deeply smug. Geralt frowned and took a wary sip from the mug passed to him. It was good. Fuck.
"So," Julian said, resting his elbows on the table and leaning forward. "Would you prefer to regale me with what I'm sure will be tremendously vivid and intrepid tales, or would you like me to fill the silence while you drink?"
"Is that an offer or a threat?"
Julian pursed his lips in thought. They were very pink, and very soft-looking. "Hm. Both, I suppose." The bard cupped his chin in his hands and leered. Geralt groaned and took another swig.
One drink turned into two, turned into three, turned into Julian fumbling the fourth mug and cleaning the fancy ale trickling down his wrist with delicate swipes of his tongue, turned into Geralt hoisting Julian up by the thighs and shoving him against the back wall of the tavern to suck dark bruises into his throat and grind their hips together in a rough, dirty rhythm.
Julian dragged Geralt into a hot, biting kiss, moaning breathlessly against his lips. "Let me down, come on, let me see it,” Julian panted, scratching his nails down Geralt’s arms. Geralt gave him a parting bite just below his jaw and dropped him, allowing the bard to frantically undo Geralt's pants.
“Oh, fuck," Julian panted, pulling Geralt out. He licked his lips and stared at Geralt’s cock. "Gods, that is something.” He nuzzled against it, before heaving a regretful sigh. “Listen, love--”
Geralt scowled through the hazy lust and tugged at Julian's hair. “Don’t call me that.”
Julian pulled back to make a disbelieving face at him. “Are you always this crotchety with your bedmates?" He directed his gaze towards the night sky and sighed again, dramatically. "You really are lucky that you’re so incredibly attractive.”
Geralt stared at the bard with matching disbelief. “What about you? Do you always fucking talk this much?” Julian licked a stripe down his cock and Geralt’s mouth snapped shut.
“Anyways, as I was saying, I would really, truly love to tackle this, but I've got a job to do tomorrow, and I need everything, you know." Julian gestured vaguely at his throat. "Intact." He looked wistfully at Geralt’s cock. “And that would ruin me. Fuck."
Geralt bit back a groan of frustration. His cock throbbed. “Then what do you propose we do, bard?"
“Ah, well,” Julian said. He tilted his head and paused in mock thought. "I can eat you out until you cry. Or you can fuck my thighs. Or you could jerk us off with those massive, lovely hands of yours." Julian sat back, legs spread, eyes glinting. "You've had sex before, right? With a man? I wouldn't want to deflower you behind some shamble of a tavern."
Slowly, Geralt raised both eyebrows and looked down at Julian. "You want me to answer those, or do you want to get up so I can show you?" Julian nodded quickly in assent, a blush rising to his cheeks. Geralt offered him a hand up.
"Wait, wait, wait! One for the road." Julian leaned forward to suckle briefly, gently at the head of Geralt's cock. “Okay, okay, I’m done,” Julian breathed, rocking back, ignoring Geralt’s shocked moan and instinctive thrust. He slapped lightly at Geralt’s thigh. "Down here, anyway. What do you say to a location change, Witcher? I’m sure you’ve got a tent or something somewhere.”
***
Geralt woke the next morning with the sun, and without Julian. He wouldn’t have cared, if it hadn’t meant that he slept so deeply that he somehow missed the bard leaving. Swearing, he rifled through his supplies and gear; swords, potions, coin purse, each of them present and accounted for. He huffed out a breath, relieved that he hadn't been robbed blind, and by a bard at that.
Readying himself quickly, Geralt set out for the day, armored and armed to the teeth. He made it to the border of the forest in good time; he'd taken a different route than the other parties, and while he couldn't be sure that it would pay off in the long run, he certainly appreciated the quiet.
He smelled Yennefer before he saw her, the scent of lilac and gooseberries drifting in the breeze; it took but a moment for her to fall into step with him. “I thought I might find you here, Geralt. It’s good to see you."
Geralt looked her over. “Good to see you too, Yenn. Bored with your lordling already? Looking for somewhere to summer?” Geralt gestured broadly to the forest around them. “Seems like the Pustulskie mountains are nice this time of year. Rampaging beasts aside, that is.”
Yennefer rolled her eyes, gathering her skirt up to step over a muddy patch of grass. “No, to both. But you know that. I’m here on business, and I thought we might be able to help each other.”
“Oh, is that what you thought?” A smirk played at Geralt’s lips. “And I figured. This isn’t your usual crowd.”
"Quite," Yennefer said, dryly. "I happened to see some of the others on my way. Charmers, all of them, with their quaint little blades and ratty beards."
Geralt hummed in agreement, pushing a tree bough aside. "There's even a bard here, if you can believe it.” The words were out of his mouth before he could think about them. Shit. He felt a touch of heat rise in his cheeks.
To his surprise, Yennefer tensed. “And what, exactly, did this bard say his name was?”
"...Julian?" Geralt paused, trying to remember through the haze of drink and his own indifference. “Fuck, not pancakes. Pankratz?”
“Jaskier’s here?" Yennefer hissed. "Geralt, we need to move." She quickened her pace, hurriedly traipsing through the trees.
Geralt matched her stride, snorting in amusement. “Why, are you secretly afraid of lutes?” The rest of her words caught up with him. “Wait, who the fuck is Jaskier?”
“Because I refuse to let him jeopardize this endeavor.” Yennefer scowled, brow furrowing. “Fuck, what is that idiot even doing here?”
Geralt rolled his eyes. “I don’t know, Yenn. I heard we’re hunting a wyvern, might be for that.” Yennefer stopped in her tracks, turning to shoot him a look that suggested that he should hold his tongue if he wanted to keep it in his mouth. “But if you tell me what the fuck you’re talking about, I might be able to help.”
"Julian Alfred Pankratz," Yennefer said, voice dripping with derision. "Otherwise known as the troubadour Jaskier." She prodded at a flower emerging from the dirt with the tip of her boot and rolled her eyes, tone turning lofty. "Oxenfurt's first mage."
Geralt stared at her. "Mage? He told me he was a bard." He scoured his memories of the night before, trying to remember an instance in which Julian--Jaskier--had used magic, had given any indication of magical ability whatsoever.
Yennefer made a disgusted face. "Ugh. He is." Her eyes narrowed intently, gaze sharpening. “What else did he tell you?”
Geralt kept himself from coughing, just barely. “We didn’t exactly bare our souls under the moonlight, Yenn. I think he mentioned that he had a job to do today, but that was it.”
Yennefer closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, grimacing. Geralt could hear the grind of her teeth. Without speaking, she reached into a pouch at her side, picking carefully through the contents and quickly withdrawing a blue scrap of cloth tied with twine.
"I swear, this had better be worth it," Yennefer muttered under her breath, undoing the twine. Wrapped in the cloth was a lock of soft, brown hair. Pinching it between her fingers, she brought it to her mouth, whispered something Geralt couldn’t parse, and blew on it.
Geralt startled as the lock of hair immediately burst into flame, billowing smoke that drifted against the wind. Yennefer’s gaze snapped to the direction that the smoke had begun to waft, a vicious, determined spark in her eyes.
"You find the wyvern, Geralt. I'm going to go have words with our bard."
***
Geralt saw the glade before he walked into it. Even through the trees, he could tell it was gorgeous--the light of the midday sun shone brightly upon the foliage dotting the clearing; at its heart lay a clear, glittering pool of water.
It would've been the picture of serenity, if not for the massive, fuck-off wyvern right in the middle of it.
Geralt had seen wyverns, had seen royal wyverns, with their golden fringe, massive horns, and venomous barbed tails. But the creature before him was far larger than it should've been; besides, all of the wyverns Geralt had encountered had just a single tail. This one had three of them.
Wings folded close to its body, the wyvern dipped its gaping maw to drink from the spring. Geralt let out a very quiet breath, grateful that it hadn't seemed to notice him.
A slight movement to the right caught his eye. There, weaving slowly, quietly through the trees, was Jaskier, wearing no armor, carrying no weapons, and seemingly oblivious to Geralt’s presence. The only equipment that the bard seemed to have with him was his fucking lute.
Geralt watched, dumbfounded, as Jaskier inched closer; using what Geralt could only assume was his singular shred of reason, the bard kept to the shadows where the forest canopy was too dense for sunlight to break through. By the time he’d managed to process the idiocy he was witnessing, Jaskier had tiptoed right to the edge of the glade.
Mage or not, Geralt thought, that fucking moron was about to get himself skewered.
Gritting his teeth, Geralt growled, drew his sword, and burst into the clearing. The wyvern reared up, towering over him as it unfurled to its full height; Geralt should've been prepared for the beast’s ear-splitting screech, but he still had to fight the urge to drop his sword and clap his hands to his ears.
Because of course he did, Jaskier swore and rushed into the clearing, entirely defeating the point of Geralt’s ploy. The bard stumbled to a halt beside him, staring at the wyvern in awe.
Geralt shoved him away and hefted his silver blade, bracing for the heat of the wyvern’s breath as it snapped and bit, the sharp rush of air as its tail--fuck, tails--whipped around to stab at him. Instead, the wyvern just shrieked and flapped its massive wings before taking flight, vanishing over the tops of the trees.
“Shit,” Jaskier breathed. He bolted into the forest, following the direction that the wyvern had flown. Geralt followed instinctively, faster than Jaskier but slowed by the foliage in his path.
He crashed through the treeline just after Jaskier, emerging onto a flat, grassy plateau. They both watched the wyvern soar through the air, making its way towards the peak of a nearby mountain. Jaskier clenched his fists and let out a wordless yell of frustration.
“You’re welcome, by the way,” Geralt sniped, sheathing his sword. He surveyed the plateau, noting the cliff's edge a couple hundred feet away.
“No!” Jaskier hissed. “That was not the time for--for gallantry!” Comically aggrieved, Jaskier threw his arms out in a broad sweep. “Gods, do you know how much harder this is going to be? At this distance? With these acoustics?”
Geralt stared at Jaskier, but the bard just sighed, reaching for his lute and checking its strings. “Needs must, I suppose.” He quickly strode forward and turned toward the forest, frowning when Geralt followed and stood in front of him.
“Listen, if you don’t mind, I really need to get to this,” Jaskier said, hurriedly, peering over Geralt’s shoulder into the trees. “I encountered an, ah, acquaintance of mine back in there, and as delightful as I find your company, I really don't think I bought myself enough time to hang around and enjoy it.”
An acquaintance. “Yennefer,” Geralt breathed.
Jaskier stared at Geralt, aghast. "Excuse me, you know Yennefer?" His eyes widened with mounting horror. “Oh, gods, are you with Yennefer? Professionally? Sexually?” He brought the lute closer to his body, cradling it protectively. “That’s--horrible, really. For both of us, I suppose.”
“What the fuck did you do to her, bard?” Geralt snarled, drawing his sword.
Jaskier eyed the blade. "Not to worry, just something to hold her in place, for the time being.” He bit his lip, a hint of mischief glinting in his eyes. "This is a nice forest, really. Quite a bit of flora and fauna, all very obliging."
Geralt lunged forward. Jaskier danced just out of reach, shockingly nimble. "Oh, she’ll be fine! For that matter, it’s only going to keep her occupied for so long, and I would really, really, rather not have to deal with what comes after.” Geralt growled, but Jaskier just grinned at him, clever and confident. “Fighting Yennefer would be messy, to say the least.”
He took another swing, but Jaskier dodged once more and leapt back. “So,” Jaskier announced, strumming lightly at his lute strings. “If you’ll excuse me, love.”
Geralt barely had time to wonder what the fuck the bard was doing before Jaskier’s fingers came down on the lute and a battering wave of force smashed into Geralt, throwing him backwards. Like Aard, Geralt thought, dazed, as he tumbled head-over-heels through the grass. Skidding to a halt, he coughed up a mouthful of dirt and lifted his head.
Ahead of him, Jaskier looked to the sky, opened his mouth, and started to sing. The bright swell of it burst forth from his chest, accompanied by the sound of his lute, a livelier tune than what’d sent Geralt flying. He couldn't understand it, but that didn't keep it from filling his head so completely that he could barely think over it.
Gritting his teeth, Geralt got up and stumbled a few steps forward, only to hear Jaskier weave the same violent sound from before into the lute's melody, unleashing another concussive blast and hurling him to the ground once more. Geralt punched the dirt, furious, and looked up to see Jaskier wink at him, lips quirking up as words continued to spill forth from them.
"Shut. The. Fuck. Up." Geralt shouted, trying to pitch his voice to carry over Jaskier's. Instead, Jaskier closed his eyes, voice spiraling through the air, head cocked as though waiting for something. After a moment the bard's eyes flew open, shining with delight. His voice rose to a crescendo before hitting one final note and breaking off, just as suddenly as it had begun.
Geralt staggered to his feet, yet again, only to see Jaskier scrambling to return the lute to its place on his back. "I'm going to rip that lute apart with my bare hands," Geralt seethed at him, hands flexing, teeth bared.
"No," Jaskier said, looking past Geralt, blue eyes bright and wild. "You’re not." With a parting grin at Geralt, he turned and began running towards the cliff's edge.
About to give chase, Geralt paused for the barest moment, tilting his head; just beyond the echo of Jaskier's song ringing in his ears, he could hear something that set his teeth on edge, something unearthly. It sounded like--
Geralt dropped like a stone and flattened himself to the ground just as the wyvern barreled through the sky, swooping over the plateau and missing him by a claw's breadth, keeping low as it hurtled past him.
Screeching, the wyvern pulled up to Jaskier's flank, about to outpace the bard. Geralt watched, stunned, as Jaskier put on a final burst of speed and leapt sideways, grabbing the stringy tendrils hanging from the wyvern’s sides and scrabbling up onto its scaled back, situating himself ahead of the beast’s dorsal spikes.
With two flaps of its wings the creature soared over the cliff edge, bringing it and Jaskier into the open air. Taking the wyvern into a broad turn, Jaskier wheeled them around to face Geralt, looking tremendously smug.
Something bright and scorching roared past Geralt’s head. Whipping around, Geralt saw Yennefer run forward and send another fireball hurtling towards Jaskier and the wyvern, just missing them. The wyvern shrieked in agitation and Jaskier crooned at it, patting at its spines. He glared at Yennefer, who held her hands up, flames already beginning to lick at her palms anew.
Geralt grabbed her arm, ignoring the heat of the flickering fire. "Yennefer, enough. You'll just shoot them both out of the sky."
"Who says that's not what I intend to do?" Yennefer muttered, viciously.
"Yennefer!" Geralt growled, tracking the way the bard tightened his grip on the wyvern, lips parting around a volley of words. The creature's jaw lolled open, too, teeth bright and sharp; its tails flicked from side to side, dripping venom. “Don’t do this.” Yennefer glowered, but extinguished the fireball.
Seemingly reassured that Yennefer wasn’t about to take another shot, Jaskier laughed, joyously, and flashed them a winning smile.
“Yennefer, good to see you! As always, kindly consider dying in a fire. Geralt, genuinely lovely to meet you, and I hope that this is but a mere bump in the road of our blossoming acquaintance!" Geralt snarled when the bard had the gall to fucking wink at him, again. "Swing by Oxenfurt, if you get a chance. A week, give or take." With that, Jaskier petted fondly at the wyvern’s side and whistled, beaming when it trilled and beat its massive wings, taking to the sky.
Geralt stood there beside Yennefer, rooted in place. Silence hung between them. It was almost jarring, after the tremendous noise that had reverberated through the air just moments earlier.
“Well,” Yennefer said, finally, huffing out an annoyed breath. “Fuck.”
“Fuck,” Geralt agreed.

A/N This is actually a fic I have had sitting in my draft folders forever. Someone a while back requested another first time meeting gone horribly wrong for this OTP and I kept getting stuck on the ending. Once more, let’s get these two stubborn people together, LOL!

Great Expectations
Olivia quirked an eyebrow in question as Amanda walked into her suite.
Instead of the usual calm, sweet greeting followed by an attempt to coerce her into doing something fun, Amanda threw her purse across the room and let out a strange, strangled noise that sounded suspiciously like a string of curse words trying to be smothered by guilt.
"I would ask what is wrong, but I assume you are about to tell me." Olivia drily remarked.
"Remember when I was excited that Maxwell invited us all to come here and see how The Royal Romance movie was going?" Amanda asked.
"I believe I recall you skipping down the palace halls." Olivia responded.
Amanda narrowed her eyes at her. "Well, the skipping is done." She flopped face down on Olivia's couch. "I hate everything here." She mumbled into the cushions.
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Must we succumb to overly dramatic behavior?"
Amanda turned her face toward her. "Are you seriously asking me this when just last week you threatened to throw every dagger you had at the waiter for accidentally calling you Madeleine?"
Olivia flicked her hand dismissively. "Details." She sat down in a chair across from her friend. "What happened?"
Amanda closed her eyes. "It all started this morning."

Around 8 a.m., The Beverly Wilshire...
"Wake up!" Maxwell burst into Amanda's suite and proceeded to jump on her bed.
"Wha?" Amanda rolled off of it in a tangle of blankets. "What time is it?"
"Time for you to get ready and go to the studio." He leaped off her bed and went straight to her closet. "Hmm." He pulled one dress out after another. "Is this all you packed?"
Amanda stumbled over to the closet. "Why are you going through my clothes?"
He finally settled on a skirt and sweater. "I need you to go to the studio and give this to Thomas Hunt.” He held up a large manila envelope. "Within this lies the very heart of The Royal Romance."
She blinked sleepily a few times. "Why do I have to do this?" She gestured toward his body. "You're already dressed and fully compos mentis."
His dimples deepened with his grin. "You shouldn't use Latin if you are trying to get out of this with the excuse that you are dumb with sleep." He gently pushed her into the bathroom. "Get ready. I arranged a surprise for you."
"What kind of sur--" her words were cut off by him shutting the door.
She dropped her head back in frustration while going through a list of reasons why she shouldn't crawl back into bed. It was then followed by a list of reasons of what Maxwell would do to get her to do this. After a quick three minutes of debate, she reluctantly started the shower.
****************
Olivia’s suite
"So, this is about making you get up early this morning?" Olivia snorted. "This is why I don't give my room keys to anyone."
"It wasn't that horrific event that cemented this burning hatred of mine." Amanda turned over on her back and stared up at the ceiling. "It was that jerk, Thomas Hunt."
Olivia did not bother to hide her surprise. "Wasn't he the reason you had that little hop to your skipping?"
Amanda closed her eyes. "They say never meet your heroes."
"He's a hero?!" Olivia wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Does the man even know how to fight?"
"I don't mean that kind of hero!" Amanda muttered. She let out another strangled, frustrated sound. "I admired him. His movies are some of my favorites."
"And you certainly never shied away from admiring his underwear modeling days." Olivia artfully dodged to the right when Amanda threw a decorative pillow at her. "Wasn't there a poster in your bedroom at one point?"
“FINE! I THOUGHT HE WAS ATTRACTIVE!" Amanda shouted. "Today proved differently."
"Was he not in his underwear?" Olivia easily batted a second throw pillow away that was aimed for her face. "What did he do?"
****************
Earlier that day, at the studio…
"I've seen your picture in magazines."
Amanda smiled at the intern escorting her toward Thomas Hunt's office. "Hopefully, I didn't look like I normally do." She shuddered. "I take horrible photographs."
"I thought you looked pretty." The hopeful actress replied. "You and Queen Riley were laughing at Maxwell Beaumont."
Amanda chuckled at that. "So, a normal day was photographed?"
The girl's phone vibrated. "I have to go handle this." She apologized to the duchess. "Mr. Hunt's office is the last door on the left."
"Thank you." Amanda watched her leave, then pulled out Maxwell's packet for the script. "Why did I agree to deliver this?" She mumbled as she continued down the long hallway.
When she reached the door, she paused before knocking. Voices raised in what sounded like anger could be heard.
Not wanting to walk in on an argument, Amanda checked to make certain no one else was in the hallway. She then pressed her ear to the door.
******************
"You know I don't have time to cater to a rich, spoiled woman! Maxwell is now suggesting that I take this--" Thomas checked the text message once more. "This Lady Amanda on not only a more in-depth tour of the studio but also to some of the historical sites around Los Angeles." He slammed a drawer shut to help rid himself of his mounting irritation. "If I ever act remotely interested in another story from some playboy royal, you have my permission to have me committed to the nearest asylum."
Holly rolled her eyes at his dramatic outburst. "Then don't take her out. It's a simple fix."
"If Maxwell's unhappy then the studio heads will become upset." He explained. "Next, it rolls downhill on us." He glared out the window. "What right does this duchess have to demand I take her around as her glorified tour guide?!"
"It might not be so bad." Addison pointed out. "She must be important to Maxwell if he asked you to do this."
"Apparently she is his bff or whatever acronym he used." Thomas spat. "I would rather deal with practically anyone else on this planet than babysit some snobbish, probably doesn't even know how to act in public, idiotic woman."
******************
Amanda took a step bac from his door. Her heart sank at discovering the director she had so admired was in truth a spoiled jerk.
Her lips firmed in a frown as her anger slowly took over her sadness.
“He--I’ll show--oohhh!” She gasped, unable to get a complete insult out.
She took a deep breath and returned to the receptionist desk. “Something has come up.” Amanda explained. “Would you mind giving Maxwell’s notes to Mr. Hunt?” She nearly strangled on his name.
“No problem.” The young intern replied. She tilted her head in question. “Are you okay?”
Amanda nodded quickly. “I am.” Or at least I will be once I get away from here, she thought. I will NEVER spend a moment in that loathsome man’s company.
******************
"I don't think I have ever seen you this angry." Olivia's eyebrows were lifted in surprise as she observed Amanda pacing about the suite. "Why didn't you confront him?"
"Because I don't do that kind of thing." Amanda snapped. She quickly apologized to her friend. "You know I try and be nice to everyone." Her eyes narrowed. "Something about that man got under my skin. How dare he judge me without meeting me?!"
Olivia's lips turned up somewhat. "What will you do when we are all at the set tomorrow?"
"Maybe I shouldn't go." Amanda muttered. "I can't embarrass Maxwell by setting Thomas Hunt straight."
"Now I'm making you go." Olivia announced. "I think it's time you felt that sweet relief of finally unleashing your temper." Her smile grew. "You don't know what you have been missing all these years."
“We’ll see.” Amanda murmured. “Do you know where Maxwell is?”
“No. Why?”
“Because I am going to make sure that I am never put in the path of Thomas Hunt again.”
*************
The Blvd restaurant, The Beverly Wilshire...
"There you are." Amanda said between clenched teeth.
Maxwell looked up. "Hey! How did the meeting go?"
She sat down across from him. "Why did you decide to ask Thomas Hunt of all people to give me a tour?!"
His blue eyes widened when he realized she was upset. "Because you've always been crazy about him."
"I have not." She snapped, refusing to accept she remotely found the director anything other than repulsive.
"Really?" Maxwell folded his arms on the table and leaned forward. "I would like to present to the jury, exhibit A: The Calvin Klein poster of one man, Thomas Hunt, in nothing but boxer briefs." He shuddered at the memory. "I still suffer from PTSD whenever I see your closet door cracked open."
Angry spots of color appeared on her cheeks. "I was young and stupid and had horrible taste in men."
"Exhibit B: You own all his movies, including the one he has a brief cameo in." Maxwell continued.
"I own a lot of movies." Amanda muttered. "He just happens to make some."
"Exhibit C:," Maxwell pointed out. "When I told you, I had been offered a chance to have The Royal Romance turned into a film, you literally chanted that Thomas Hunt needs to direct until I talked to my agent."
"I wanted your story to earn critical acclaim." Amanda averted her eyes.
"Exhibit D--"
"Enough!" Amanda hissed. "I get it, okay?" She leaned forward, looking directly into his eyes. "Don't ever force me to--"
"Thomas!" Maxwell yelled out, waving toward the director.
Amanda felt her stomach drop when she felt his angry presence pause behind her right shoulder.
"Maxwell." Thomas greeted curtly. “I waited for as long as I could on your,” his tone hardened, “Lady Amanda, but she never showed up.”
Maxwell turned his attention to her. “You didn’t deliver my notes?”
"I did." Amanda snapped, her eyes darted to Thomas. "But I didn’t want to spend a single second in your company."
His eyes widened. "I beg your pardon, what--"
"I refuse to spend the day with a man who so readily judges a person without meeting them." Her chin lifted. "You made it quite clear this morning what you think of me."
Thomas remembered his intern bringing in Maxwell's notes. "You were the one who came by today." His temper snapped. "On top of everything, you listened in on a conversation that wasn't any of your business. Why am I not surprised?" He mocked.
Amanda moved quickly out of the booth until she was standing directly in front of him. Her eyes flashed as heated color flooded her cheeks. "It wasn't hard since you were yelling like a petulant child." Her mocking smile appeared. "I'm grateful that I found out what type of egotistical, judgmental, miserable old man you truly are before being forced to accept your escort anywhere."
"Nowhere nearly as much as I am." Thomas barked, stung by her insults. "I wouldn't escort you a single inch across this room. You've proven that I should continue to trust my gut instinct when it comes to people like you." He bowed in an exagerated insult. "Thank you, Lady Amanda, it has been a pleasure that I hope is never repeated."
Unable to think of a proper insult, Amanda’s eyes sparked with unshed tears. She didn’t want to give this wretched man the satisfaction of thinking he had hurt her to the point of crying.
Without a word, she shoved past him and quickly left the restaurant.
"I had that going differently in my mind." Maxwell said once Thomas sat down. "Maybe after she cools off, the two of you could--"
"Maxwell, there will never be the two of us if Amanda is a part of that equation." Thomas stated firmly. "I will never spend a moment alone with her."
****************
Olivia’s suite, again…
"You should have used one of the butter knives on him." Olivia told her. "I've trained you in the places on the human body that will cause the most pain."
Amanda sighed.
"At least you stood up for yourself." Olivia continued.
Amanda nodded silently.
"Don't tell me you regret this?" Olivia prodded at the lack of verbal response.
"I'm exhausted." Amanda finally said. "I haven't lost my temper like that in years." She ran her hands over her face. "I just stopped by to let you know I'm not going out tonight." She got up and gave a swift hug to Olivia. "Thank you for letting me vent again."
"Don't let that man keep you from going out." Olivia ordered. "Take a nap. I'll make certain you're not disturbed, and we can join everyone else for dinner."
Amanda neither agreed nor disagreed. She gave a halfhearted smile and left.
****************
That night...
"I want everyone who has a spare key to my suite to return them." Amanda announced at dinner.
Maxwell and Olivia ignored her request.
Drake quirked an eyebrow at her. "How many keys were you given?"
"I thought just one." Her eyes narrowed. "Yet, I've had no less than four people enter my room today."
Hana blushed and handed her key card over. "Maxwell told me to help with picking out a dress or two."
Riley slid hers over. "Me too."
"I appreciate the concern." She narrowed her eyes on Maxwell as he raised his menu up to hide his face. "But it is not necessary." Her bitterness then settled on Olivia. "Nor was the wakeup call."
The red head merely shrugged. "I'm not going to allow you to lock yourself away to wallow in guilt and misery over Thomas Hunt."
"I wasn't wallowing!" Amanda snapped. "I was sleeping because Maxwell woke me up after at practically the crack of dawn!"
"As soon as you awoke, you would have started the misery and guilt trip." Olivia calmly stated. "It never fails to happen once you lose your temper."
"It's true." Maxwell added.
Amanda slumped in her chair. All the fight left her. She knew they were right.
“Don’t worry about Thomas.” Maxwell told her. “Tomorrow, he’ll be so busy with the movie that he won’t even notice you’re there.”
*****************
The next day...
Thomas surreptitiously peeked over the script each time he heard Amanda's voice or laughter. Seeing her this way made sense that she was friends with the group whose story he was filming.
She wasn't the irrational shrew he had unleashed the day before.
She looked like a different person. Gone was her insulting temper. For some reason, he was puzzled by her appearance. She hadn't bothered to wear any jewelry other than a watch, which she kept glancing at. He expected her to dress according to her station. Yet she looked like she would easily blend in with a crowd.
He suspected that he would have spotted her immediately.
His eyes moved down her figure when the group followed Addison, leaving him to review today's schedule. Since their altercation, he had been unable to get her off his mind. He had even dreamed about her.
It was disturbing that he woke up in a cold sweat over her. The dream had him ending their fight differently. That was the last thing he wanted to do with her.
Thomas couldn't hear what she was saying, but the entire group were laughing at an observation she made.
He swallowed the last of his coffee and decided to get another cup as the group moved closer to craft services.
"Where are you going?" Holly asked.
"Coffee." He muttered, wondering why Amanda wouldn't look his way. He had expected glares the entire time, not being completely ignored.
“Three cups of coffee wasn’t enough?” she asked.
"What?" He asked.
"You've had three cups." Holly pointed out. "You never have more than that in the morning."
He couldn't think of a clever enough retort, so he walked off without a response.
"This might be my favorite part of filmmaking." Maxwell teased as he reached for one of the fresh pastries Addison offered.
Amanda's smile disappeared when Thomas approached. She moved away from the table, pretending interest in a prop, when he came along next to her for the coffee pot.
He glanced at her back, deciding to force her to acknowledge his presence. "Is there anything I can get you, Lady Bridgerton?"
Her shoulders stiffened. Without looking at him, she automatically responded. "No thank you." Before Thomas could say anything else, she quickly walked over to the set that was a recreation of the palace's hedge maze lit by moonlight.
Her lips curved. She was impressed with the attention to detail the film crew had done. She walked the familiar path, turning to see the swing she had spent a great deal of her childhood on.
Thomas appeared beside her.
She stubbornly looked straight ahead.
"What do you think?" He prodded.
"About what?" She responded, folding her arms across her chest.
"The soundstage? The sets?" He motioned around. "I know you were wanting to tour a studio. Does this meet your approval?"
"It does." She couldn't quite hide her excitement at seeing something like this in person. "I find it fascinating."
He blinked at her words. "I'm…glad."
She stiffened once more at having inadvertently complimented him and tried to get around the hateful man. "If you will excuse me,"
"Perhaps I can--"He began, surprised at the thought of trying to rectify her opinion of him.
“Good day, Mr. Hunt." She tried to escape yet saw that he blocked her path. When he seemed unable to move, she squeezed past.
Their bodies brushed one another, causing her to pause.
Their eyes met and she quickly wiggled free.
He watched her hurry off to rejoin the others.
Thomas tossed his untouched coffee in the garbage and returned to work.
*******************
A few days later, they bumped into each other inside the hotel.
"Lady Bridgerton." He gently grasped her arms. "Nice to see you again."
She grit her teeth. "Please stop calling me Lady." Her eyes narrowed. "Since I discovered your opinion on nobles, I know you mean it as a verbal jab."
He quirked an eyebrow. "Then what should I call you?"
"Amanda." She replied. "But I don't believe I will hear it often since we will never spend more time together." She smirked and left him.
He knew he was supposed to meet with Maxwell, but instead decided to follow her into the hotel's restaurant.
He talked the hostess into seating him in a booth beside Amanda's. He couldn't recall a time in his life when he desired to annoy anyone as much as he did her.
He settled his gaze on her after ordering a drink.
Amanda gripped her menu and purposefully kept her eyes averted.
After a few moments, she dropped her head into her hands. "Why are you trying to drive me crazy?" She practically pleaded. "You can’t stand me, yet you sit there on purpose to stare!"
"You never allow me to finish what I’m saying.” He countered, scooting around his booth.
“Why should I?” she snapped. “You are only going to hurl more insults my way.”
“How do you know?” He asked. “Do you dare presume to know my mind?”
She scooted closer, eyes narrowing. "You don't like me!" She hissed. "And I'm not too fond of you." Her eyes searched his. "Why are you trying to talk to me? I made certain to not bother you at the studio and have not returned each day when the others have."
Thomas propped his arm on the seat and leaned closer to her. "I don't know." His eyes touched on her hair softly curling toward her cheek, guiding his eyes to her lips. "But you have been on my mind." His eyes lifted to hers. "Perhaps it is because I have yet to meet the real you. I’ve seen you at your worst, and yet with those you care for…you’re a completely different person. Who is the real, Lady Amanda?"
"I assure you; this is the real me. Regardless of how irritated I am at the moment this is me!" She quickly thanked the waitress for her drink. "Now, I think we--"
"That we should eat together, I agree." Thomas rose and told the waitress he would be joining Amanda.
He slid into the booth, bumping into the shocked duchess. "I recommend the lobster frittata."
"I'm allergic to shellfish." She said in a stunned voice.
"Then I will order something else." He remarked. "I'll have the steak and eggs." He handed his menu to the waitress. "Shall we have a bottle of champagne with brunch?"
Amanda absentmindedly ordered the cheeseburger. Once they were alone, she settled back against the seat, intent on pretending she was dining alone.
"I'm considering taking time off once filming wraps up." Thomas announced.
"What about the sequels?" Amanda forgot about her plan to ignore him. "You aren't going to let someone else direct, are you?"
He shook his head, turning more toward her. "The screenplay for the second part hasn't been completed yet. Ryan and Chris both have obligations to other directors that they will complete in between the first and second part."
"I see." She tried to ease away from being so close beside him, but her skirt was caught under his leg. He apparently was not inclined to give up his hold on her.
"Amanda, have you been on any other tours?" He asked when she became stubbornly silent again.
"I have." She replied. Her smile held a hint of mischief. "Ryan took me to some points of interest."
Thomas narrowed his eyes. "Did he?"
"Yes." She propped her chin on her hand, attempting to have a dreamy far off look. "He was a perfect gentleman."
"He's seeing someone." He informed her, wondering at this new irritation he felt.
Amanda shrugged. "Like I said, he was a perfect gentleman."
"I expect to hear news of his engagement at any moment." Thomas continued.
"Then perhaps you should be drinking champagne with him." She kept a pleasant smile on her face. "For you and I have nothing to celebrate over."
"I disagree." He countered.
"Of course, you do." She pointed at his shirt. "I would call this blue, but I'm positive you would say it was another color."
"I always thought it was more gray than blue." He said to purposefully needle her.
She ran her fingers through her hair. "Of course, you would."
Their food was brought out and each focused on eating while ignoring the emotions the other was causing.
He poured her a glass of champagne then lifted his in a toast. "To expectations."
She searched his eyes for some hidden meaning then tapped her glass to his. "Cheers."
"What are your plans today?" He asked.
She set her glass down. "I'm going to see a movie."
"Really?" He slowly smiled. "What will you be--"
"There you are!" Maxwell walked over, his dimples deepening with his delighted grin. "I must have forgotten we were to meet down here."
Amanda took that moment to jerk her skirt out from under Thomas' thigh. She smiled with her newfound freedom. "I was just on my way out." She wished them both a good afternoon and escaped.
"I knew you two would hit it off." Maxwell boasted.
"And when exactly is that supposed to happen?" Thomas asked.
************
A few nights later...
"Everyone knows the drill." Maxwell whispered.
"Yes." Hana reassured him. "I spill my drink on Amanda."
"I drop a plate in Thomas's lap." Addison whispered.
"They are both forced to go to the master bathroom because I have food poisoning in the hall bathroom." Riley added.
"I get everyone to move to our suite." Liam added.
"I turn everything off." Holly glanced over her shoulder to make certain no one was near enough to hear.
"And I lock them in the bedroom." Maxwell announced.
"What about the phone situation?" Ryan whispered.
"Bastien is confiscating everyone's phone for security purposes." Drake explained. "And I have already removed the hotel phones from the bedroom and living room."
"You all have your missions." Maxwell looked around at his group. "Good luck."
Addison and Hana nearly bounced with excitement as they took their places.
****************
Thomas sat down when Addison insisted yet again. "I still don't see how this helps the crick in your neck."
She rubbed the side while rolling her head. "Because it doesn’t hurt tilting it down, only up." She huffed. "You're too tall."
She eyed Hana and watched as the graceful lady stumbled, splashing her glass of wine down Amanda's dress.
"I'm so sorry!" Tears filled Hana's eyes. She grasped Amanda's hand and dragged her into the bedroom.
"I have something that will help get this out before it stains." Hana made Amanda remain in the bathroom. "It's in my room. I'll be right back."
Addison waited patiently, keeping Thomas talking. She then saw Hana give her the sign.
"...and then we should--" Thomas jumped to his feet when Addison dropped her plate.
"Oh my gosh!" She exclaimed. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to."
He brushed her hand away and went toward the bathroom. He heard Riley's sounds of sickness and quickly backtracked.
"There's a bathroom in the bedroom." Maxwell pushed him toward it.
"Thank you." Thomas stepped inside and opened the bathroom door.
Amanda whirled around. "You startled me."
He glanced down at the red stain on her peach colored dress. "My apologies. We both seem to be the ones with accident prone friends tonight."
She wet a rag for him. His fingers brushed hers when he reached for it. Their eyes lifted to one another's.
Amanda looked away first. "You should take your jacket off first."
He shrugged out of it, thanking her when she offered to hold it for him. Thomas brushed at the different stains on his shirt and tie.
She did the same with his jacket.
The two worked quietly.
"Do you hear that?" She asked once the water was turned off.
He stilled. "I don't hear anything."
"Exactly!" The two hurried to the bedroom door.
It wouldn't open.
Amanda knocked on it. "Maxwell! We're stuck in here!"
Thomas leaned his ear against it. "There's no noise out there."
"I'll call someone to--" she twirled around. "Where are the phones?"
They searched throughout the drawers and closets. Nothing except a pair of pajamas and a nightgown were in the drawers.
"What is going on?" Amanda wailed, slowly backing away.
"I think," Thomas began, recognizing his pajamas from home. "that Maxwell and the others want us to spend the night together."
**************
After changing their ruined clothes, the two sat down on the bed. It seemed that Maxwell had removed the chairs that had also resided there. He had also had the television removed.
"Now what do we do?" Amanda asked. "It's only eight thirty."
Thomas tried to keep from staring at her in her silk nightgown.
She guessed that Riley and Hana had taken it earlier that day when they kept having her try on dresses. His eyes traveled up her legs --
"Why don't we talk? Settle this...whatever this is between us?" He suggested as she stood up to pace.
Amanda quit her agitated movements and sat down in a breathless huff. She reclined on the pillows and attempted to not stare at how sexy Thomas looked in pajamas. That little bit of hair flopping over his forehead softened his angular features, making her want to run her fingers through his hair as his lips touched--
"I expected you to be different." Amanda began, lowering her eyes. "I think this might be as much my fault as yours."
Thomas stretched out beside her. "What do you mean about expecting me to be different?"
She ran a hand through her hair. "I guess I expected you to be nice." She grimaced. "I thought we would get along. Perhaps become friends or...something."
"I see." He said softly. "And I ruined that when you overheard, that I was expecting the worst."
"Yes, I mean," she dropped her head back on the pillow. "I was so disappointed that you were like so many people I have encountered at court. That you were so set on disliking me…I just thought why bother even trying to be nice."
“Ah.” He snorted softly. “And in my preconceived notions, I decided you had proven me right.”
“And now we are being tortured by our so-called friends.”
He turned his head toward her. "I don't feel tortured right now."
She turned too and realized how close their faces were. "You don't?"
He focused on her mouth. Perhaps he was being tortured. "No, I actually like being around you like this."
"So not hostile or hurling insults at you?" She teased.
He surprised her with a sudden smile. "If we must make that distinction, then yes, I prefer this version to any of the others I have encountered."
Her burst of laughter made him scoot closer to her.
“I must admit, it has been exhausting remaining angry around you.” Her warm smile was focused on him for the first time. “You sir, have kept me on my toes during every altercation.”
“You have been a worthy adversary.” Thomas chuckled when she solemnly thanked him. “I haven’t’ wanted to annoy any woman as much as I have you.”
The pair became quiet in thought after sharing another laugh.
Amanda turned on her side and studied his face. "Thomas?"
"Hmm?"
"Why do you think we have been snapping at each other all this time?"
"You've been doing most of the snapping lately." He reminded her.
"I suppose I have." She admitted. "Why have you been chasing after me though since I have been, you know?"
"Cruel?" He offered. "Cold? Mean?"
"I get the picture." She grumbled. "I apologize for my rudeness."
"I told you once before I wasn't certain what it is about you, but I think I might have solved the mystery." He inched closer.
"And that is?" She asked.
"I think we have some unresolved sexual tension." Thomas waited to see what her response might be.
He didn't expect laughter.
"Hold on.” she said once she saw he was serious. "You find me attractive?"
"I did even when I despised you." He admitted.
Amanda blinked. "Oh."
He cleared his throat. When she still remained silent, he prodded her. "Any chance you find me attractive?"
"I do." Was her hurried response. "I mean, I always thought you were handsome."
"Being thought handsome is not the same as being attractive." He reminded her. "Do you find Liam handsome?"
"Of course, I do." She sighed, knowing where he was going with this. "And no, I am not physically attracted to Liam."
Thomas gently placed his hand over hers. "Then, should we use this time to test out the waters? See if the fights can cease once and for all after we discover what this is?”
Amanda slowly nodded. Before she could think too hard about all the ways this could backfire, he had pulled her flush to him. Her breath caught as he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.
His fingertips slipped down her neck and over her shoulder, sliding down before coming back up. She closed her eyes as he caressed her skin. His eyes followed his hand before flickering up to her parted lips. He closed the distance and placed a tentative kiss to them.
And then they knew why they had been fighting so much.
**************
The next morning…
“There’s no noise.” Maxwell whispered. He had his ear pressed to the bedroom door.
“Either they are asleep, or they killed each other.” Olivia hissed. “I’m hoping he is at least bleeding out in there.” She smacked Maxwell on the back of the head. “Why did you persist in putting them together?”
“Because I know what I’m doing as a matchmaker.” He grumbled. “If you would only listen to me about you and Dra—“
She put her hand over his mouth. “I’m warning you, Maxwell. Do not ever link my name with his again.”
Addison pushed between them and pressed her ear to the door. “I say we leave their clothes here and quietly unlock the bedroom door. “I don’t want to walk in on something I shouldn’t see.”
“Good idea.” Maxwell carefully removed the chair he had wedged under the doorknob. He then unlocked the door and jumped back in case one decided to open it.
As his coconspirators sneaked out of the room, he quickly jotted down an apology in case he had been wrong and slipped it under the bedroom door.
Just as he was about to leave, the note was slipped back with a response written.
You better book another suite for yourself. This one is ours now.
Thanks for locking us in together,
A & T

Title: Just Ask
Pairing: Bruce Banner/Tony Stark
Warnings: some swearing, some discussion of being fascinated by bombs, slight sexual innuendo, some negative self talk, mild angst but there’s a happy ending. :)
Synopsis: Bruce and Tony are grad students at Caltech where Bruce is a college DJ in the spring of 1990. Tony is a frequent caller of Bruce’s late night show, but his last call leaves Bruce with a lot of confusing feelings to sort out.
This is a part of my 80s college AU. It will probably play out a bit differently in the scheme of things, but I was really inspired by this song (”Ask” by the Smiths) and wrote the entire thing in one sitting, so I thought i would post it to inspire myself to write more. Also if it ends up playing out differently, I don’t really want to lose this. So I hope you enjoy this oneshot and hopefully there will be more of this AU soon. :)
Word Count: 1,809
Bruce settled in the old orange colored office chair, propping his feet on the edge of a crate of records. He flipped through the box of his favorite tapes and put in Three Imaginary Boys. He thought he’d just play the whole thing, Tony probably wasn’t listening tonight and if Tony wasn’t going to heckle him about what he played, he didn’t really care what other people thought. Though Bruce would have been lying if he said he didn’t sometimes play a particularly poppy or techno sounding song just so Tony would tease him. The Cure’s debut record wasn’t really mock worthy, but it wasn’t critically acclaimed either. It was kind of weird and rough and had been mostly been ignored. If Bruce had been talking to Tony he would have added “like me” in his classic self-deprecating way, that didn’t seem to make Tony uncomfortable like it did everybody else. Tony was somehow encouraging even when he was teasing and razzing him. Bruce never felt ashamed for the things he said about himself when they were together, but somehow ended up leaving conversation liking himself a little more or at least laughing more than usual.
Bruce shook his head and exhaled heavily. He hadn’t come here to think about Tony. He had come here because, well, he had been every Wednesday from 1:30-3:30AM for the past five months. Even if no one listened this late, he had requested this time slot to DJ and felt obligated even if no one would notice if he stopped. Anyway, he enjoyed it.
It wasn’t like he and Tony were even fighting. It had just been...different lately and he hadn’t seen him since Friday. Bruce tried his best to shake all his thoughts away and pulled out his homework and zoned out to the abrasive yet jaunty sounds of his favorite band in their garage state.
“No sound. No clocks. No people.. Stop. Short. Grinding halt. Everything’s coming to a grinding halt.”
When Side A ended Bruce didn’t bother to flip the tape right away, opting to finish the page he was reading instead. It was already 2AM, the only people listening were probably drunk and busy doing something more stimulating. Bruce jumped a little when the silence was interrupted by the loud ring of the studio phone.
“Hey, Mr Tamborine Man, will you play a song for me?”
It was Tony. Full of energy and spice like always. Even at two in the morning. Especially at two in the morning. Before Bruce could say “you’re on the air” Tony kept talking
“I like your new Avant-garde approach to radio, but if I could interrupt Simon and Garfunkel for a moment, I’d like to dedicate this one to someone special.” When Tony said ‘someone special’ his words oozed with romance and playful flirtation and it almost made Bruce’s stomach turn with a mix of anxiety, attraction and jealously.
“I’ll play anything you like…” Bruce said, his voice calm and casual and in complete contrast to how he felt. He closed his eyes tight and thanked himself for not saying “do” instead of “play.”
“You like the Smiths: Cousin Brucie?”
“Don’t call me that, I can’t afford a law suit on a grad student’s pay…” Bruce paused to smile and shake his head a little, Tony could almost hear it “but you know I do”
“Well there’s a song I think really fits this situation I’m in….it’s a single they put out a few years ago….Ask… I’d like to dedicate to my...lab partner. I think we’ve gotten a lot closer, but they won’t give me the go ahead, and I’m just not sure where we stand…”
Bruce suddenly felt warm and that awful drop in his stomach again. Lab partner? Tony had a lab partner? Who?
He continued in his cool, even voice; that didn’t even have a hint of the rejection (no matter how irrational) and panic he was feeling.
“Sure, of course, the Smiths 1988 single “Ask” coming right up. I hope your lab partner’s pulling an all nighter.”
He hung up the phone and found the tape and started to play it, listening intently trying to picture who Tony was talking about. Tony always joked that they were lab partners, but it was just a joke. Bruce helped him with physics sometimes because it was one of the few things that didn’t come completely naturally to him, but they didn’t actually have any classes together. Who was he talking about? They didn’t really do lab partners in grad school…did they?
The jaunty, island-y guitar reminiscent of Paul Simon filled the airwaves. It was one of the Smith’s happier sounding songs, something that had done intentionally to off-set a the previously politically leaning single.
“Shyness is nice, and, Shyness can stop you, From doing all the things in life, You'd like to”
Tony was never shy. Bruce didn’t think shy girls..or boys..were really his type.
“So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?”
It sounded like Morrissey was trying to get his significant other to be more adventurous. In bed probably. Was Tony seeing someone? And didn’t bother to tell him? Bruce took a deep death and tried not to feel hurt. It wasn’t any of his business, really. He had just thought they were closer than keeping those kind of things from each other, but then again, Tony had so many friends and Bruce had one other good friend, he was probably over estimating the closeness of their friendship. It had happened before.
“Ask me, ask me, ask me,
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Because if it's not love
Then it's the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
That will bring us together”
The bomb. And when it finally hit Bruce it did feel kind of like a bomb.
Of course. Why else would Tony request the Smiths? Tony didn’t even like the Smiths. He said they were sad and boring. A point Bruce had neither agreed or disagreed with, but had simply shrugged in response to and said he couldn’t really explain why but he loved them anyway. Everything was suddenly starting to make sense. It felt like the turning point from when Burce was just learning Physics to when he really started to know and understand it.
“the bomb would bring us together.” From the very beginning it had always been bombs that brought them together. It was a dark secret understanding that only they shared. They both knew that it was their fate to work on them for the rest of their lives and were both darkly fascinated and horrified by them at the same time.
Bruce started frantically going through his tapes and records, trying to find the perfect follow-up. Something to let him know. He did want to ask Tony. There were lots of things he would like to try with him. Everything. Anything. All at once.
Bruce pretended that he only cared about work, but he was really just a horny, lovesick bastard underneath it all and he had been for months ever since he and Tony had started spending long, late nights together. He could still remember the first time Tony had called in at the radio to complain about the lack of “barn burners” he was playing.
“If you’re listening to the radio this late, you’re trying to stay AWAKE.” He had ranted to him, while pushing him to play more AC/DC. Bruce had been annoyed at first, but even before they had met in person, he had started secretly looking forward to his calls and requests. Then one day after class, this gorgeous brunette with a smile to kill over, tapped him on the shoulder and asked “are you the night radio guy on Wednesday’s that plays all the goth techno shit?” and the rest had been history.
Bruce went for the Cure automatically and then stopped. No, Tony had chose his language, Bruce had to at least meet him half way. And he couldn’t pick something like Orchestral Maneuvers in the fucking Dark. He flipped through the classic rock, and the punk side of New Wave, frantically trying to find something appropriate. He paused at the Blondie record, not fully able to remember what he liked on it. He flipped it over. “Atomic” was written in yellow cursive. Bruce had never put a record on so fast. Perfect.
As the Smiths winded down, he pressed the “on air” button. “this one goes out to my lab partner.” And with that he let the needle drop on the record, turned off the lights and locked the door.
“Make me tonight, tonight, make it magnificent, tonight”
“Atomic.”
.............
The warm Californian spring air whizzed by as Bruce peddled his bike as fast as he could down to Tony’s apartment. The streets were empty and everything was quiet except for the faint sound of some undergrads’ drunken shouting in the distance. He skidded to a stop on the sidewalk below Tony’s apartment. Tony’s bedroom light was still on.
Bruce paused. He didn’t usually put himself in situations like this. There was still a chance he has misinterpreted everything, but there still seemed to be a bigger chance that he had been being an oblivious idiot for awhile and Tony had been trying his best to patiently spell things out for him. He leaned his bike against the railing, took a deep breath, and ran up the stairs, like he was in one of the romantic comedies he not so secretly loved.
Before he could even knock on the door, it swung open to reveal Tony’s trademark cocky grin.
“I’m really digging your new hands off approach to DJ-ing, Banner.”
Bruce laughed, still out of breath from the bike ride over. “Tony…Tony!” he stammered, finding it difficult to even hear himself, his heart was beating so fast and loud in his ears. “Tony, I want...I want to ask you…”
“You don’t even have to ask” And there was that sly, but warm smirk that made some guys want to punch him, but made Bruce want to do a whole variety of different things.
Tony’s lips were still at first, when Bruce’s met his, surprised that Bruce had made his move so fast. Tony felt one hand on the small of his back and the other grasping at his hair, but before Bruce could pull away, thinking he had made some kind of terrible mistake, Tony bit his lip and pulled him back in, not hesitating to deepen the kiss with his tongue. He pulled on Bruce’s shirt, guiding him out of the door way, and kicked the door shut loudly.
He knew Bruce was a sucker for cheesy romantic comedies.

Let’s debunk this shit.
First off...why should we, on the topic of Spider-Man, actually place stock by the guy who has in the past argued Sins Past is as, if not more, bad than One More Day when anyone with an ounce of knowledge of how writing craft works would realize this is abjectly false. As a story the flaws in Sins Past amount to it inserting something into the past that doesn’t fit at all. One More Day by contrast not only does this but needs to violently ignore 45 yrs of established characterization to even function and even then it fails since it needs to contradict its own narrative.
Oh and you know MovieBob is the guy who said ‘That Spec cartoon wasn’t as good as people make it out to be. People like it more for what it could be than what it was.’...WTF was he even watching.
But let’s dive into some more specifics of Bob’s argument.
 “OMD ‘needed’ to happen.”
 This is objectively untrue.
Let’s give the benefit of the doubt and say what Bob meant wasn’t so much that Spider-Man needed to make a deal with the Devil but rather it was necessary to get rid of Spider-Man’s marriage.
I can’t bring myself to do a 3000 word essay on why the latter alone is idiotic, sexist, myopic and utterly false but here is a cliffnotes version.
There are 2 fundamental problems with Bob’s line of thinking.
The 1st is that to end the marriage you needed to outright alter Spider-Man’s history via a soft DC style continuity reboot thus creating in a literal sense an alternate universe version of Spider-Man who’d just never been married in the first place.
Put simply Spider-Man’s marital status could’ve been ended in universe through numerous methods that avoided that. He could’ve gotten divorced. The US government as some kind of petty revenge upon Spider-Man turning on the Registration Act could’ve legally annulled his marriage along with certain other legal aspects of his life. There could’ve been a reveal that due to a legal loophole nobody realized at the time technically speaking Peter and MJ had never been married in the first place despite believing they were.
None of this would’ve fixed the most egregious contrivance of OMD and OMIT, that by simply never having been married magically this = Peter and MJ would break up. You still need to justify THAT separately which OMD didn’t even attempt to do. OMD in isolation erases their marriage but it doesn’t explain or justify why doing this would mean they are now no longer in a relationship. OMIT tried and miserably failed to do that because once again it required the abject ignoring of decades of established (and logical) characterization.
But what should we expect from the guy who in another video once said Superman would be a jerk if he married Lois Lane because of the stress and dangers it’d expose her to, specifically comparing it to real life people who’s jobs offer comparable examples. ‘Superman would never put Lois Lane through that’ said Bob (though I am paraphrasing I admit.
  Why?
If REAL people do that then why WOULDN’T Superman OR Spider-Man do so?
It’s a line of thought which amounts to Bob saying those people shouldn’t have marital relationships. And that is gross.
The 2nd problem with Bob’s ‘it needed to happen’ assertion is the notion that CREATIVELY it was necessary for the health of Spider-Man.
Let’s ignore how creatively (and financially) Superman has been on the up and up since 2016 when he got his marriage BACK.
 Instead let’s consider for a moment...why?
Why CREATIVLY does Spider-Man need to not be married to work? Why does he need to be single for his long term creative/financial health?
There is no answer because the truth is he isn’t. Spider-Man’s love life is relevant only in so far as the series follows his life and not being asexual romance is a part of that. At which point if you are arguing for his long term creative health he needs to be able to swap out the women he’s going to be romantically/sexually involved with why then does that not also apply to literally every other character connected to every other part of his life?
 It doesn’t.
It’s a bullshit argument born of an ignorant lack of questioning. It’s born of “Well it’s got to be this way because it’s always been this way and it’s worked that way.” Ignoring how it doesn’t and how you know...Marvel comics itself exists off the back of saying “Maybe it doesn’t have to just be this way. I don’t like that way in fact, I like the idea of trying it this other way.”
Spider-Man being single keeps Spider-Man stunted and in a state of doomed to failure. It literally renders his love life redundant because every reader (and this applied before 1987 when he got married, but applies a thousand times more now) knows his romances will never amount to anything and that they are glorified Bond girls. And I’ll be honest the substance (such as there is) in the Bond movies NEVER lies with the Bond girls with the sole exceptions of those few movies where they tease you with the idea that he has deeper feelings for them.
Then you have the fact that marriage as a part of most people’s lives and a responsibility is outright tailor made for the character who’s core concept is entwined around the interconnected idea of responsibility and being a (relatively) normal person. It’s not different to him graduating from High school or moving out of Aunt May’s house or getting a job.
But let’s look at the franchise in the wake of OMD creatively and financially has it been doing better than before?
 LOL NOPE!
In 2016 we had the Power Play arc. This arc was THE Spider-Man event of the year. It tied into the previous Spider event of 2015, Renew Your Vows by introducing the incredibly powerful villain Regent who’s powers were that he had the powers of EVERY other hero virtually and in RYV took over all of NYC following killing the X-Men and Avengers on his own. It guest starred fan favourite Miles Morales, the first substantial appearance of the character in Amazing Spider-Man since his migration into the 616 universe. It also guest starred lead character of the MCU and (then) Marvel comics poster boy Iron Man fresh from his hyped up run under Bendis, the biggest name in comics of the previous 20 years. It also teased the appearance of the newest team of Avengers, a brand that has been huge since 2012 for obvious reasons. Oh and it featured the return of another fan favourite Mary Jane who was once more being used to tease the possibility of her and Spider-Man’s romantic reunion which had been a surefire way of raising hype for a story since 2008 onwards. Oh and it was clearly a tie-in to the international blockbuster and critically acclaimed movie, Captain America: Civil War.
And of course you had much promotion from the Marvel hype machine, Dan Slott interviews and the usual variant cover artificial sales inflation gimmick that had become common to Marvel.
Safe to say that this story was a big, big deal and sure to sell well right?
Well....it actually sold less than a barely promoted, run-of-the-mill ASM arc from 2005 by J. Michael Straczynski that featured in the first issue Tony Stark sitting on a chair sans armour and beyond that no guest stars....oh and there were no variant covers....and btw Spider-Man was married in it
  . ...Oh....
But hey what about some OTHER Spider-Man stories since OMD. Haven’t THEY been creatively enriching?
I mean we had classics like:
The Lizard ruins the interesting humanizing aspects of his character when he becomes a cannibalistic monster who eats his own son and maybe rapes someone
Black Cat’s characterization gets flushed down the toilet so she can be an indulgent juvenile sexual fantasy for Joe Kelly who believes Spider-Man is fundamentally a man child Black Cat’s characterization gets shot to shit again by her ripping off Catwoman by becoming a gangster, something she has never held aspiration for before and seems to want to get involved in now for no reason at all beyond being angry that Spider-Man imprisoned her and exposed her identity that wasn’t even secret in the first place
Dan Slott who likes Doc Ock more than he likes Peter Parker decides to say screw it and make Doc Ock Spider-Man thus invalidating the entire reason he was hired, which is to write about Peter Parker. He proceeds to make Doc Ock a villain sue and cause readers to wonder if he’s this smart and this dangerous he lost so many times in the past at all? Also he tries to rape Mary Jane in issue 2 and then succeeds in maybe raping Spider-Man himself in the same issue and definitely succeeds in raping the only dwarf character in Spider-Man’s canon.
Spider-Man becomes like Iron Man thus invalidating the entire point of his character and reasons people like to read about him.
A mystery surrounding the Green Goblin’s identity that turns out to be the twist that he was Norman Osborn all along meaning this was a pointless mystery the whole time.
Ben Reilly finally comes back after 20 years but doesn’t act even a little bit like the character people knew and loved causing people to wish he’d stayed dead
Betty Brant is physically assaulted and Spider-Man tracks down the assailant but when he finds him lets him go (thus enabling him to assault other innocent women) because Aunt May guilt tripped him by saying he was a jerk at age 15 for allowing her, a 50+ year old adult and his parental guardian, to cope with Uncle Ben’s death alone on the night of his death.
Fan favourite Mayday Parker has her character now defined by the death of her father invalidating the entire point of her character which was the ongoing relationship between herself and her Dad
Every spider person ever fights a bunch of one note cosmic vampires across alternate niverses who are variant action figures of another one note cosmic vampire villain. The story is utterly reparative and makes Spider-Man play second fiddle to all the other characters cramming for panel time.
 I could go on but I won’t.
To count the creative successful and enriching Slott and the post-OMD Spider-Man stories is a far easier task than to count the ones which are for the most part mediocre-God forsakenly terrible and miss the whole point of the various characters involved (most of all you know SPIDER-MAN himself!) because the latter is the norm post-OMD.
Tellingly both volume 1 and volume 2 of Renew Your Vows a book BUILT around the concept of a married Spider-Man have (when judged appropriately given their out of continuity status) garnered perfectly respectable sales (especially in volume 1) prior to their recent time skip (an ill advised move regardless of what the series was about) and critical acclaim. And critical acclaim from people besides Marvel/Spider-Man sycophants like CBR who have vested financial interests in positively reviewing the stories.
In fact there is a very strong argument in favour of Slott being the single most creatively damaging Spider-Man writer in history. The list of things that need to be FIXED because of his idiocy and incompetence is vast.
Moving on to Bob’s other points:
“Peter and MJ being together was a dumb stunt when the did it in the first place”
If Bob had you know READ the stories leading into the wedding he’d know
 a) That relationship and marriage was being built up since 1984 albeit with the initial intention being Peter stranded at the altar.
 b) A stunt isn’t rendered invalid merely because it is a stunt. A Stunt can make sense and with the build up the wedding had this was one such example
“The marriage generated very few decent stories that wouldn’t have worked just as well without it”
Here is a list of a FEW decent or above stories which in some significant way make use of the Spider marriage between 1987-2007
 Kraven’s Last Hunt
 Venom
 ASM #400
 Revenge of the Green Goblin
 A Death in the Family
 ASM volume 2 #49-50
 ASM volume 2 #51-54
 Sensational Spider-Man volume 2 #32
Sensational Spider-Man Annual 2007, the only Eisner nominated Spider-Man story ever
 Spider-Man unlimited volume 3 #2 Story 2: Making Contributions
Eleven Angry Men and One angry Woman
 Parallel lives
 Spider-Man: the Final Adventure
 Web of Death
Revelations the end of the Clone Saga
  Spectacular Spider-Man #241
  Spectacular Spider-Man #242-245
 ASM vol 2 #39
Ultimate Spider-Man Anthology book: Five Minutes
I Heart Marvel Web of Romance #1
  Spectacular Spider-Man #199-200
  Spectacular Spider-Man #250
  The Tombstone arc
  Peter Parker Spider-Man volume 2 #14
 Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-12
Hmmm...it’s almost like Bob sucks at mathematics and story evaluation or something. Then again he did say there was no problem with Luke Skywalker in Last Jedi so you know...I should know better.
Oh and btw the whole ‘those would’ve worked JUST as well without the marriage’ argument is a double edged sword since there are literally less than 20 Spider-Man stories post-OMD that WOULDN’T have worked with a married Spider-Man and only one of them is good...and only if you also take entirely in isolation of Spider-Man’s wider history. Every other story with tweaks could work AS if not MORE effectively with a married Spider-Man.
If the argument is there should be no elements in a story that do not actively contribute to it then shit....why should Spider-Man’s SINGLE status be in a book? Why should Aunt May, Jameson or shitton else be multiple stories across the decades of Spider-Man? Hell by this logic Aunt May or Betty Brant are superfluous to ASM annual #1 which inspired part of Spider-Man 2.
“The Spider Marriage left the franchise spinning it’s wheel for a very long time.”
This is another lie. After Peter and MJ got married there was precious little wheel spinning. Almost immediately we jumped into ongoing stories involving Betty Brant, Joe Robertson, Peter going to school again, MJ and Peter’s finances taking a hit when MJ lost her job, Jameson being impersonated by Chameleon, Black Cat dating Flash, Peter’s parents returning and THEN you got the Clone Saga FFS.
Following that we got Norman Osborn running the Daily Bugle followed by the true wheel spinning garbage of the Mackie/Byrne run which was bad BECAUSE they axed the marriage. Following that when JMS took over his wheel spun for maybe 5 months tops? The rest of the time he reconstructed Peter and MJ and Aunt May’s characters, thrust forward with his Spider totem storyline and then began the slow build up to OMD starting with Peter becoming and Avenger.
There were few months were NOTHING was really happening and the number of issues where that was the case owed much more to the fact that the writers needed to pad out FOUR monthly titles each month!
“By contrast BND and Slott’s run has been good”
By objective writing standards this is a fallacy and Bob is offering no proof to this. He just says ‘it’s been good’. Except Bob’s word isn’t proof unto itself despite how much he must like to think so.
“Peter and MJ are more interesting now”
This is the proof Bob is not a...I don’t want to say he isn’t true fan. I rarely use that term. It’s more that he...isn’t an informed fan.
Anyone who knows any legit shit about Spider-Man could tell you Spider-Man is far from more interesting now than he was prior to BND.
Pre-OMD Spider-Man was the sum of 45 years of experiences. A 30ish average guy who’d been through Hell and a lot of battles and survived them and coped with that pain. He was a competent hero and a flawed human being who was just trying to look out for the little guy and take care of his family.
MJ meanwhile was a woman who’d also lived through Hell but demonstrated sheer steel by surviving it in spite of having no powers to fall back on. She’d gone from a carefree party animal who was seemingly selfish, to a hero in her own right who had an endless well of inner strength.
In contrast post-OMD Peter Parker is a man-child fuck up who illegally invades foreign nations with his giant G.I. Joe action figures whilst often playing second fiddle in his own fucking book to whatever guest stars want to steal the limelight. And he’s not believable anymore. He isn’t a grounded guy who copes with the shit thrown at him. He’s the guy who just shrugs off being killed, having his body stolen and his life upended by his enemy and then losing a year of his life.
That isn’t more interesting unless you are arguing being a Saturday morning cartoon character is inherently more interesting than being....welll actually inherently more interesting than being a certain character Stan Lee and Steve Ditko invented in 1962.
Which Bob plainly isn’t arguing because he’s also listing MJ as ‘more interesting’....how?
MJ isn’t even IN the book regularly any more so HOW could she be more interesting. Worse when she WAS in the book she had 2 roles. Ship tease the fans by being Peter’s friend and confidant (i.e. something she used to do BEFORE BND) or being a blind idiot in Superior which is NOT more interesting.
So what the fuck is he talking about?
I don’t know WHAT he’s talking about. But when you make a statement like: ‘on balance this story that eviscerated and betrayed everything about who Spider-Man is and invalidates his motivation from now on because he sold out in the biggest way possible, was on balance worth it because we got t see Doc Ock as Spider-Man try to rape people’ I certainly from WHERE he is talking from.
And the sun don’t shine there son.

[MALE, HE/HIM] — i wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve seen KWON JAEBUM around century records, considering they’ve been working here for SIX YEARS. according to their file, they’re a TWENTY FOUR year old PRODUCER who you can often find working with [N/A]. on a good day you might notice that they’re ANIMATED & DEDICATED, but if you catch them on a bad one they can also be INDOLENT & OVERBEARING.
↱ wuddup everyone! my name is ella (18,she/her,gmt) and i’m super excited to be apart of this group! i’ll be playing my weirdo idiot jaebum, and if you’d like to know more about him just click down below. if anyone wants my discord just hmu! can’t wait to start threading with everyone. ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ)
BACKGROUND:
born in seoul, south korea, but grew up in california, usa due to his father being relocated because of his job and the high demand of fishermen in the west.
raised with loving and supportive parents who didn’t disapprove of his dream in becoming a musician.
was very active in school, played many sports, received great grades, and soon began developing his love for composing/writing lyrics.
at a young age he’d play around with random music programs and would pass out mixtapes at school (he was that kid lmao).
ended up taking the california high school exit exam to test out, earning his diploma at 15. all this to be able to move back to seoul to build up his career.
he did audition for three different companies, but only got accepted into two, one of them being century records.
started out as a trainee and was promised to debut as a leader/rapper in the future, but after he turned 18, the company decided they’d like to keep him as a lyricists/composer.
jaebum was irritated by this decision, but soon learned he worked better in his own space.
the ceo also allowed him to start posting on his soundcloud again, and gradually, jaebum started to receive positive feedback from his solo tracks.
the lyrics he’d write and the songs he’d compose (for the company) were being critically acclaimed by the public, and attention was beginning to be drawn to his name.
a big name record producer decided to take him under his wing and taught jaebum the ropes of producing music --- that along with majoring in music theory, the company decided to promote him to producer once he turned 22.
jaebum is very laid-back and doesn’t like rushing into anything until he’s set on completing it. however, he can be a little too laid-back and is sometimes lazy. he only becomes bossy if he hasn’t had enough sleep, but he generally tries his best to set up a comfortable environment when he works with anyone from the label.
he may look mean and grouchy but really he’s just a big ole softy! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و

13) You find a journal belonging to your bias
Member: Got7′s Jaebum x Y/N
Type: fluff
“I’m just going to drop out,” you sighed, plopping on the bench alongside your best friend.
“And abandon me? Negative,” she grumbled, shaking her head. “Thermodynamics can’t be that bad...can it?”
“Did you hear the question you just asked?” you croaked. “How did I even end up in thermodynamics?”
“Well, seeing as it has almost nothing to do with your desired field of study, I have no idea,” she hummed, patting your knee. “You can always drop it?”
“Drop it?” you gasped. “Do you know how much I paid for it?”
“I’m guessing it wasn’t necessarily the cheapest class,” she muttered. “Maybe get a tutor?”
“That’s admitting defeat,” you spat. “I’m just going to soldier through and barely pass and complain about it the entire time.”
“Sounds like a plan,” you friend nodded. “I have a class that is actually IN my curriculum to get to, so make sure to make good decisions while I’m away.”
“I’ll try,” you murmured, letting your face fall into your hands. You took a deep breath as you stared out from your fingers. The student union was busy that day, with flurries of activity in nearly every corner of the open area. Several clubs had tables set up and the student government looked as if they were handing out free food. You lifted your brows and sat up, attempting to examine that situation just as a heavy grunt sounded directly to your left.
Glancing over, you noticed a handsome boy had sat down beside you, slinging his book bag near his feet. He had a bowl full of whatever student government had been passing out and you eyed it curiously.
“I don’t know you and I’m not sharing,” he muttered, shoving noodles into his mouth without looking up.
“I wasn’t asking to, on either counts,” you grumbled, crossing your arms, and looking away. What a prick.
“Sorry,” he sighed. “Well, I mean, I’m not sorry for what I said. I’m just sorry for how it came across.”
“Glad you cared enough to apologize,” you chuckled, lifting your brows. This guy was a trip. “What’s in the bowl anyway?”
“Black bean noodles?” he muttered, pausing his chewing for a moment. He separated himself from the bowl and looked down at it curiously. He scooted his chopsticks within the contents and tilted his head. “I think?”
“Delightful,” you hummed, shaking your head. Maybe you wouldn’t go in for a bowl after all.
“Good talk,” he nodded, finishing up his last bit of noodles before standing. He picked up his bag and swung it over his shoulder. Wiggling his eyebrows at you, he smirked. “Later.”
“Later,” you grumbled, shaking your head. Since you had begun college, the amount of strange interactions you incurred daily seemed to skyrocket. You had seen everything from students in t-rex costumes to full scale 18th century reenactments prepared by the theater department. At this point, boys like the one you had just talked to didn’t even make you bat an eye anymore.
That was until you heard the gentle smack against the concrete.
Looking over, your eyes searched the ground for the source of the noise and immediately found a small, leather-bound journal. You glanced back up to see the retreating body of the boy who had been sitting next to you and his unzipped bag. In that moment, you understood what had happened, and instantly jumped toward the notebook.
“Hey!” you gasped, shouldering your own bag and jogging toward him. “Hey...um...guy!”
Several students walking by looked up curiously, but you needed none of their attention.
“Hey, you! Black bean noodles!” you shouted, navigating through the crowd of people. You glanced down at your phone, noting that it was indeed one of the common times for a class change and groaned.
“Hey!” you cried, at this point annoyed as the boy got further and further away from you. “Idiot!”
Once again, several people turned, but not him.
“Really? You people turn around when I yell idiot?” you cried, finally stopping and letting your shoulders fall. “Ridiculous.”
You had had the mysterious, leather journal for two days and you still hadn’t caught the boy from the bench. Stationing yourself at the same bench, at the same time, had not yielded any results. You hadn’t even seen him in passing.
Pacing around your dorm room, you eyed the notebook that you had positioned on your bed. Upon looking at it closely, you noticed two small letters were imprinted on the cover. JB.
“JB...should I open it?” you murmured, continuing your pacing. “No, that’s an invasion of privacy...
...but what if his full name is in it? What if he left behind a phone number? So if someone were to find it...they could contact him....to return it?”
You heaved a sigh, but continued to walk. Crossing your arms, you finally paused, and picked it up. “Is that still an invasion of privacy? Maybe if I just...”
Dropping the notebook from your hands, it landed on it’s spine and instantly parted it’s pages. You chuckled to yourself as you leaned down, crouching on all fours above it to study the open pages.
“See, it fell open,” you whispered. “I didn’t intentionally open it. It just happened.”
You glanced over the pages, and gulped. Secretly, you had hoped for a few To Do lists, maybe a shopping list or two, but no, you felt as if you had stumbled into something much deeper...
A complete stranger’s inner thoughts.
10/4/16 It’s hard to accomplish anything on campus when music is so demanding. It’s not that I don’t enjoy being a musician, I just wish I had more of a chance to enjoy being a student. The dating ban has been lifted, but I’ve never felt less at ease around people. I wouldn’t know how to be romantic if I tried. It’s amazing what flows from my pen, but not from my mouth. I can be harsh and cold. I just want to be a better me. I feel like school just reminds me of what I should be doing at my age...and is working really it?
“A musician,” you hummed, tilting your head. He looked vaguely familiar, but you were unsure of where you had seen him and didn’t know how you would ever place his visage. You weren’t necessarily the most pop culture savvy now that school dominated your life (specifically thermodynamics) and it wasn’t like he had ever been in any of your classes.
You looked over the page, trying to keep your eyes from scanning over more words, but it was difficult. Smiling as you noted each margin doodle or random line that didn’t quite belong, an inner voice in your head pressured you to read more.
“I can’t,” you whispered. At least not tonight.
But just like that, you were hooked.
You took the journal everywhere with you; classes, mealtimes, out on the weekend. If you were to go anywhere, the notebook would be tucked firmly within your bag or under your arm. It was like a novel you couldn’t put down. Eventually it had become a bit of a secret for you, something you would reward yourself with on especially bad days.
Particularly after your Thermodynamics class.
You nestled up on one of the lounge chairs in the corner of the library and pulled your knees to sit below your chin. Cracking open the journal you took a deep breath as you flipped through a few pages.
9/7/17  Tomorrow is a very important day. Yet again, I get to expose my soul to millions of people to receive criticism or acclaim. This is one of the first real times I’ve written something so deep and overwhelming. It was just Jinyoung and I for this and it will be just us in the end getting the feedback. I know our members support us, yet I still feel a great amount of anxiety. It was us in the beginning as well. I’m glad to be able to rely on my friend.
“What’s up?” a familiar voice chirped, dislodging you from your thoughts. Your best friend snatched at the journal in your hands and looked it over casually. “What are you reading?”
“Ah, give that back,” you groaned, launching from your seat and reaching toward her. She snaked away from your grasp and continued to read.
“Are you...keeping a journal?” she muttered, scanning over the sentences. “But this...this isn’t your handwriting.”
“Come on,” you whined. “Please give it to me.”
“This is someone’s journal, Y/N,” she gasped. “This is someone’s journal who is not you!”
“Keep your voice down,” you shushed. “Do you want the whole library to hear you?”
“Who does this belong to?” she whisper-shouted.
“I don’t know,” you whisper-shouted back.
“How do you not know?” she grumbled. “You’ve been reading about this person’s life for....”
“Two weeks,” you cringed.
“TWO WEEKS?” she hissed. “What the hell? Why are you being such a creep?”
“I didn’t mean to be a creep,” you groaned. “It fell open and-”
“Oh, it “fell” open,” she muttered. “Likely story.”
“Okay, so I was nosey!” you argued. “Tell me you wouldn’t have done the same!”
“This isn’t about me!” she murmured.
“It is now! Quit being a turd!” you spat. “Alright, so I’m reading some guy’s journal. Now what?”
“It’s a guy?” she hummed. “Like...a cute guy?”
“That’s not the point,” you whined.
“Why can’t it be the point? I like this point,” your friend muttered.
“What am I supposed to do with the damn journal?” you groaned.
“Well...you tried to find the guy?” she asked, beginning to pace.
“Of course I tried to find the guy,” you hissed. “I lived in the student union for like three days after he dropped it.”
“And you haven’t seen him on campus?” she continued.
“Oh yeah, I did,” you spat sarcastically. “He told me to keep it. I had a few more chapters to finish.”
“So...take it to the lost and found,” she said simply with a small shrug. “If you can’t find him, maybe he can find it himself.”
“The...the lost and found,” you whispered, your eyes wide. “I uh...I totally thought of that too.”
“Right,” she nodded. “Of course you did.”
“If...If I wanted to put it in the lost and found,” you hummed, now your turn to pace. “Where...uh...where exactly would that be?”
Your friend grinned and shook her head, trying to keep a laugh from falling from her lips. “Come on.”
Your best friend navigated you back toward the union and into one of the adjoining buildings you were familiar with seeing student government members disappear into. She gave you quick directions to the reception area, which also doubled as home base for the campus lost and found. Grinning, she swiftly abandoned you to grab a scantron before her class.
For some reason, you were oddly nervous as you pulled open the door to the small reception office, taking much too much time to shuffle toward the desk. You ran your fingers along the familiar leather of the journal as you walked, and released a sigh.
“Goodbye friend,” you whispered as you finally reached the desk, looking over the edge to the attendant sitting behind it.
“How can I help - oh, hey,” the familiar face of the man you had been looking for all along smirked. “What’s up?”
You stared at him for a moment, incapable of making any move or sound. You knew almost all of his deepest thoughts and biggest life milestones up until this point...
...well, up until September because that was as far as you had gotten in his journal.
And he knew absolutely nothing about you.
The feeling sent a shiver down your spine.
“I...um...I found this,” you whispered, sliding the journal across the desk’s surface. You looked at the small initials on the front cover. “You’re uh...you’re JB?”
“Jaebum,” he nodded, eying the item curiously. He took it into his hands and flipped it over. “And this...this is mine.”
“I tried to find you,” you continued quietly, incapable of making eye contact. He was incredibly attractive which made the situation about ten times more uncomfortable.
“You read it,” he deadpanned. His expression was unamused as he stared at you. It wasn’t an accusation, but a simple fact, a statement you both knew to be true.
“I read it,” you squeaked, feeling extremely small.
“Of course you read it,” he sighed, his cheeks growing brighter by the moment.
“Why wouldn’t I read it?” you whispered with a wince.
“Because it didn’t belong to you?” he muttered.
“I thought maybe-”
“You’d find my contact information and return it, casually reading excerpts of my life by accident?” he asked, lifting his brows. “Isn’t that kind of cliche?”
“Would you believe it if I told you that it fell off my desk to an open page?” you croaked.
Jaebum groaned and tilted his head backwards, running his long fingers over his face. “This is perfect.”
“Well, um...” you hummed. “I’m happy...that I could return it for you?”
He lowered his chin and stared at you, an expression void of emotion on his face. You were unsure if he would begin shouting at you or start smiling. Feeling a heat begin to rise on your neck, you were deep within the throws of embaressment as you locked eyes. Luckily for you, he was blushing as well.
“Look,” he sighed, searching your face. “I’m not going to lie, I’m annoyed. But you’re cute, so I’ll let you make it up to me over a cup of coffee. Then you can tell me all about myself.”
“To be fair...” you whispered. “I haven’t caught up on the past month.”
JB let out a loud laugh. You could tell he was attempting to keep it from turning into a groan. “Then I guess I’ll have to get you up to speed.”

we know the start, we know the end, masters of the scene
here you have it my friends, part 3. shout out to my baked goods for helping me in this long and boring process xD
1 | 2
AU: Matteo Balsano is a famous singer who has been crushing on this one girl he saw every day behind a window many years ago, back when he first started recording his debut album and inspired his first big hit, “Princesa”. Luna Valente, professional Olympic skater turned actress is at a local (and very popular) talk show to promote her breakout movie. This is where it all starts.
BENSON VS SMITH: LOVE RIVALS?
After a couple of weeks of the stars of SHATTERED WINGS being photographed together with Matteo Balsano in what appeared to be a heated discussion, sources to the off and on couple conformed by Smith and Balsano, confirm it was all caused by Smith’s jealousy.
The actress was apparently ‘incredibly upset’ when she learnt what had really happened in JA JAZMIN’s dressing room minutes prior to their cast interview in the show, more so after in said interview Mexico’s ‘Little Sun’ hinted the incident to its international audience.
However, as their promotional tour around the globe for their very acclaimed movie continues, the duo has done nothing but deny all rumors regarding their rivalry; with Smith going as far as calling Balsano ‘an idiot I wouldn’t fight over for’. Benson affirms it’s a matter taken out of context by the fans and media.
The SHATTERED WINGS stars are set to return to the city after two months on the road two days from now, bringing home numerous ticket records from all around the world, as well as the critic’s overruling acceptance.
For more scoop on these three, click here!
Had it really been two months?
They hadn’t even able to finish their conversation, much less his apology from coming off as a creep. Now it’d been two months, and probably wouldn’t have the chance to see her again. Ámbar had warned him she’d kick his balls if he even dared to ask about her when she came back, and his relationship with Simón was anything but close to ask such manner.
Basically, he’d be stuck in her mind as a creepy memory. He didn’t like it, but he might as well accept it until he found a way to clear the water; not only for her sake, but for his too.
“You keep track of the media, now? We have a PR team for that, y’know?” his manager asked from over his shoulder, not missing the open article on his phone.
“I’m not. It was just a suggested article, that’s all.”
“Suggested means you’ve read articles like that one more than once.” Delfi arched her brow, questioning him while she sat on the chair next to his. Maybe citing her in his apartment wasn’t a good idea, he had no way to evade her questions in his own home.
“Maybe Gastón has.”
“From your phone?” He didn’t have an answer for that. “Hey, it’s okay, I’m not judging you. There’s nothing wrong with keeping personal tabs about what the world has to say about you. Just don’t get too fixated on with it, it’s not healthy.”
“It’s not even an article about myself.” He admitted. There were no secrets between them, and he’d learnt that the cleanest they were between each other, the less problematic it’d get when it came to talk about and planning his career moves. Plus, Delfina knew how to keep everything confidential, which was the reason he’d chosen to take Ámbar’s advice so many years ago when she suggested Delfi to work with.
“Let me guess, this is about the Sol girl?”
“Luna.” He corrected quickly, not even realizing he’d done it until Delfi gave him ‘the look’. She didn’t comment on it, though.
“Luna, right. What worries you in that matter? You were the one who told me not to release any statement.”
“I guess I just – I don’t know, she’s new to this world.”
“Are you worried she can’t handle it? I wouldn’t, I know her team, she’s in good hands. And from what Pedro has told me, Simón warned her about everything that’d come her way, so she wouldn’t walk in blind.”
He’d forgotten she was seeing Simón’s best friend. “Still, I haven’t apologized yet.”
“Is this the reason of your writing block?” she asked suspiciously, folding her arms. Her tone wasn’t accusative, nor was her face annoyed, but he still felt bad it was that noticeable.
“Is it that obvious?”
“You’re not subtle, buddy, but don’t worry because no one else has noticed.” Yet. “You got time, the deadline isn’t for another year, there’s no pressure from the label.”
“But?” he knew better than to think there wasn’t one.
“But you know post-production is long AF, and your perfectionist ass will drag it as much as your brain can… if you don’t hurry with the base songs it’ll only make it longer.”
He groaned lowly, “I know.”
“I’m going now. I’ll call you tomorrow to schedule another time, okay?” She told him as she stood from her seat to grab her purse. Their meeting had gone nowhere, but then again, he had no progress in his songwriting and he was on a break until his next album released, so there wasn’t much to discuss to begin with. “I’d advise you to go and try to find yourself a muse, though.”
“Yeah, I’ll-” Wait. A muse. He needed to find his muse. Matteo called for her before she could get out of the apartment, startling the even more confused girl.
“I need you to help me find her.”
“Are you excited to be back?”
“Aren’t you excited to be back? This is huge for you Nina!” she told her friend excitedly, holding onto her arm while they walked through the airport to wait for Simón, who was picking them up. “A new book! That’s not an everyday thing!”
“It’s just a photography book, Luna. Not a big deal.”
“Just? What have I told you of selling yourself short? The book and the quotes are beautiful and it’s definitely a big deal!”
Nina beamed at her, “thank you. I’m nervous, what if people don’t like it as much as the others? I would die if it flops, or if they question why I’m even still coming out with these.”
“Nonsense! Felicity’s fans are loyal, and they’ll love your work no matter what, have more faith in them!” she bumped her shoulder against her lightly.
“You never answered me.”
“About what?”
It was Nina’s turn to bump her shoulder. “I asked you if you were excited.”
“I’m so happy I’ll finally be in my bed again. I hate sleeping in unfamiliar places.”
“You got to sleep on your house in México, though.”
“I almost didn’t leave.” She admitted with a giggle.
Both fell into a comfortable silence afterwards, in no hurry to keep the conversation flowing. Travelling together, living together, and knowing each other after so many years made it easy to stay in silence without it being awkward. Simón joked all the time that they were a married couple, and the only thing they needed now was a dog (mostly because he wanted one, too), and Luna could swear they’d have one already if it weren’t for Nina being strongly allergic to pets.
That, and that their time was mostly spent travelling between competitions and cool places for Nina to take photographs for her blog or her books.
She sighed silently when she remembered the competitions. Now that her ties with the movie were almost over, she needed to get her thoughts straight and decide what she was going to do next. Will she be able to compete again after the break? Did she even want to? Everyone had warned her already that everything in the skating community would change for her after this. More exposure usually meant double the pressure; and she wasn’t sure it’d sit well with her. She skated because she loved to, not because she wanted to be the best, or have everyone thinking she was. Juliana had told her that was why she fought so hard for her to play her in her movie, why she reminded her of herself.
But, did she want to change her career? She loved the experience of acting, loved how fun it was to pretend to be someone else for a while every day, but she didn’t love it the way she’d seen Ámbar do it. For the blonde, you could see, hear, feel how much she loved what she did. The girl poured everything into what she did, and she succeed marvelously. The thing all critics agreed on from all over the continents was exactly that: Luna glowed the most when she was skating, and when she spoke about how much the sport meant for her; yet, Ámbar shone in all of hers because she made you believe them, which made up for her lack of experience in the sport.
So, now she had to pick what exactly to do. If she wanted to go to the next Olympics she’d have to start her training as soon as possible, even if she was on a technical ‘break’.
“What are you thinking so hard about?”
“Huh?”
Nina smiled, “you seemed to be lost – even more than usual- in your thoughts. What’s up?”
“Nothing, just… the future, I guess.” She sighed again. Luckily, her friend knew her better than anyone and gave her a short, but strong, hug.
“You still have some time to think about it, don’t go crazy.”
“Time flies, though.”
“Aren’t you the first to say time isn’t real?” Nina joked, mocking her accent a little.
“I don’t speak like that!”
Both laughed, ignoring the annoyed looks some – probably jetlagged- people threw their way.
“But, for real, Luna, you don’t even have to choose between the two. You can always pick something else; some people will be disappointed, yes, but it’s your choice. Do what makes you happy.”
“What would I do without you, Watson?” she half joked, half seriously questioned. Nina beamed at her once more.
“The same thing I’d be without you – be my less great self.”
“True that.” Luna pretended to cheer with her imaginary cup, her friend being quick to follow her suit. “Now, call Simon. He’s late and Felicity can’t be late for her own book release.”
“Aye, aye, capt’n!”
He wasn’t going to lie, he was nervous. (He also could almost hear Gastón’s voice in his head correcting him to nervous-wreck – he kinda agreed).
Delfi, bless her, hadn’t even bait an eye when he asked her to ask Pedro about Luna’s possible whereabouts in the city. He felt like a total stalker, so he ruled out her house and the rink she skated at, as well as the gym and Simón’s apartment. Thankfully, Delfi was able to get him last-minute invitations to an event she was going to be at.
Originally, he’d thought about going solo, so the possible – or most likely, probable- embarrassments would be for him only to know. However, as soon as Gastón heard the event was Felicity For Now’s newest book launch he’d made him ask Delfi for a plus one pass (God forbid his friend asked his ex for a favor). And, since Pedro was apparently a close friend to Felicity herself, she tagged along too. She was a lot more considerate than Gastón, though, because she promised not to cross him while his ‘apology’ took place.
“I can’t believe we’re going to see Felicity’s real identity.” Gastón gushed beside him, now at the party, careful to keep his tone low. Not because he didn’t want to embarrass him, but himself.
“Calm down, fanboy. We still have the whole party to look forward to.”
Matteo, on his own, was more worried about making himself look like a fool. He knew he’d already stood out – his black suit was a lot more formal than everyone else’s semi-formal attire- but if that wasn’t enough, the way he kept glancing around like a lost puppy made more than person stare at him for a moment.
He was too concentrated on finding her on the crowd.
Not that the crowd was too big – it was rather small, actually- but still, he didn’t want to miss her; if she was there at all.
“Do you know how long I’ve wondered who she was or how she looked like? Years! I’ll finally put a face to the character!”
“Character? I thought her book was consisted only of pictures.”
“Well, yeah. They’re pictures but they’re ordered in a sequence that tells you about her life and short quotes to help you understand the concept. It’s like a photographic journal of herself.”
“Yet she never shows her face?”
“Nope, it’s always shadowed or blurred out.” Gastón sounded bummed out by this. He must’ve really been wondering about this mystery girl longer that he knew about. Matteo felt almost bad he wasn’t aware of this, even if his best friend never really told him about his fanboy life.
He palmed his back lightly, “cheer up, bud. Tonight’s your night.”
“Matteo, Gastón!” he knew that voice. When he turned to the direction of the call, he wasn’t surprised to see Simón. Matteo should’ve figured out that if not only Luna, but Pedro were here, then he would too.
“Hi, man.”
The guitarist threw him a smile. “What a surprise! I’ve never seen you two in events like these before.”
“Yeah, well, Gastón here is a big fan of hers.” He pointed to his friend, “and I was free from songwriting, so I came too.”
“How’s that coming along? Wrote another hit yet?”
Matteo grimaced slightly, “I’m blocked, so no. How’s your album?”
“Ouch, man, that sucks.” Simón patted his shoulder sympathetically, “we’re still editing ours out, gotta choose the right songs before we pass the final demo.”
That brought back memories. Hadn’t they been in the same exact situation six years ago, the same day he saw her for the first time? He, staring on a blank music sheet, desperately trying to find inspiration for his debut album, while Simón – and her- were on the room across listening and trying to choose which tracks to pass?
He mentally sighed. Everyone was right, he was a creep.
Simón must’ve not noticed his momentary train to his memories, because he continued talking, “- she’s not here yet, if she’s the one you’ve been looking for the past hour. Felicity is arriving with her.”
“Who?”
The guitarist was amused. “Luna. She’s arriving with Felicity in ten minutes.” His heart almost busted with this information. However, when he realized what Simón was probably thinking, he went into denying mode.
“Oh- no, no, no. I wasn’t- I didn’t- she’s not why-” Simón laughed.
“Don’t worry, man, Delfi explained to us you came to apologize to her for the headlines. It’s chill.”
He was so firing her for this (no, he wasn’t). “She did?”
“Getting last-minute invitations for this is hard, if not impossible. Especially since Ni- Felicity handpicks her guests for privacy reasons.”
“I didn’t know Delfi was that close with her.”
“She’s not, Pedro is. I gave my five cents in your favor, too.”
“Thank you.” He meant it. Simón just patted his shoulder once more and reminded him of the time, pointing to the entrance before leaving to mingle with other guests. A question popped in his head, “are they always late?”
Gastón, who’d remained quiet during his exchange with Simón, chuckled, “you really went to la la lunaland, didn’t you?” Matteo flipped him off, “Simón said he was late to pick them up at the airport, so they went behind schedule because of this.”
His friend went quiet after this, anxiously waiting for the main door to open. Matteo sipped on his forgotten drink, trying to calm his own nerves. Five minutes later, it happened.
The door opened, and in came Luna and her friend – Felicity, as his friend had mumbled beside him, smiling and hugging everyone that came to greet them. He noticed how Luna would fall a couple steps back from the photographer, letting her take all the attention.
He wanted to go there and say hi, he really did, but it was as if he was glued to his spot. Watching her laugh, smile, and talk to others from afar was the sight he was used to, and to get closer, on his own (Gastón had fled to Felicity as soon as she’d entered) was something he wasn’t sure he was ready for.
Just jail him already, really. His creepiness was scaring him too.
In the end, he waited until the whole book introduction was made, the food was eaten, drinks were drunk, to go ask her for a minute (or twenty). When she saw him, he could see she was taken aback; no one had told her he’d be there, however, she still smiled at him.
“Hi.” Gosh, was he lame.
“Hi!” she managed to sound somewhat excited to see him. Surprising, really.
“Do you think I could steal you for a couple minutes? I still haven’t apologized.” He got closer, being careful not to step into her personal bubble, and offered her his hand.
She didn’t even hesitate to take it, leading him to a quiet place to talk. They ended up in the terrace, sitting down on a bench near a lit – and warm- candle arrangement.
He wasn’t sure how to begin his apology. Should he just say sorry? Should he explain why he knew her? Why he knew she liked to be called Luna instead of Sol? Should he pretend he was star-struck that day?
“I’m sorry.”
That wasn’t his voice speaking for him.
“What?”
Luna sighed quietly, posing her bright green eyes on his own, “I know it’s my fault our names – and Ámbar’s- have been on the headlines lately. I’m sorry I put you in this situation, it must be very annoying, since you’re on your break from it.”
He shook his head, “no, no, no, no. It’s my fault. I was the one who dragged Ámbar with me and the only one who should be apologizing for my actions the night we met.” He didn’t add that his creepiness was an on-going thing, “you have nothing to apologize for. It’s all on me.”
Her face scrunched up. It was cute. “I was the one who answered wrongly with Jazmín. Had I not, the media would have no idea, or perhaps would write a different story.”
“That’s on Jazmín, not on you, Luna. She lives for making other people gossip about their lives.”
“Still, I feel bad and I apologize for it.”
Matteo sighed, “I told you, you have no reason to do so. I, on the other hand, am sorry I came off like I did. I just, well, you remind me of someone I met many years ago.”
She smiled, “do I?”
“Yeah. She was just as tiny and pocket-sized.”
“Okay, now you’re pulling my leg.” Luna laughed, her bright eyes shinning even more as the laughter reached them.
“Jokes aside, I’m sorry I made you feel uncomfortable.” Her smile remained.
“Apology accepted; but only if you accept mine.”
“Oh, but I can’t do that. Such a beautiful miss like yourself shouldn’t be apologizing for nothing.” He could see her compliment affected her in the light pink shade that now covered her cheeks, “besides, you seem to be forgetting I’ve been on the headlines longer than you. This is nothing, really.”
“But you’re on a break.”
He sighed, “yes, but like it or not it’s still publicity. It helps me stick around for a little longer.”
“So, you don’t mind being in the headlines even if they’re lies?”
“They have an image of me already; it’s not a lie, and it’s not a truth, but it’s still a part of who I am.” He had confused her now, he knew it. The small frown was proof of it. “If you choose to stick in this job you’ll understand.”
“I’m not sure I will.”
He guessed so. “Going for another gold, then?”
“Not sure of that, either.” That surprised him. Partly because he was sure she’d stick to skating, and partly because he couldn’t believe she was being this open. There was a reason he spoke in riddles sometimes, just like Ámbar, Simón, or literally any ‘famous’ person he knew. Privacy, and sometimes inner thoughts had to remain for close and trusty people only.
She’d just admitted something he knew she’d been avoiding in every interview he’d watched of her, and she’d done it freely. Was she this open always? Or did he give her the vibe that he could be trusted? Maybe she didn’t think it was as big of a deal as he did?
“Oh.”
“Yeah. I still have time, though. Not a lot, but there’s some.”
“There’s no bad in what makes you happy. I’d go for that.”
“Is that why you chose music? Because it makes you happy?” she questioned him, sincerely curious. He nodded.
“It’s the only constant thing that has made me happy since I was a kid. I fought hard for it, and I’m lucky it’s worked out this well.”
“Hmmm.”
“I’m glad I bore you.” He joked, when she seemed to be lost in her contemplating after a moment in silence. She laughed, shaking her head and making a couple ringlets fall around her neck.
“You don’t. You’re actually a quite good companion, I’d like to keep you as a friend.” She shot him a quick smile, “creepiness aside, you’re pretty cool.”
His heart did a flip. “Friends, huh?”
Luna offered her hand, beaming. “Friends.”

Fall Movie Preview 2019
Tumblr media
Fall movie season is here! This is always my favorite time of the year to see movies. There’s such a wonderful variety of films available to see in theaters. Everything from awards season contenders, indie darlings, and exciting space adventures! Get ready to make your way to the theater because this looks like it’s going to be a great season at the movies. Let’s take a look at what’s coming soon.
SEPTEMBER September 13th The Goldfinch Starring: Ansel Elgort, Oakes Fengley, Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard Bring the tissues and prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions because this is gonna be a wild ride. The Goldfinch is based on the Pultizer Prize winning novel by Donna Tart. This is one of the best books I’ve read recently, but it’s quite an emotional journey. It follows 13-year-old Theo Decker after the traumatic death of his mother in an art museum bombing. It’s a haunting and powerful story about the human condition once grief becomes a prominent force in one’s life. The film is directed by John Crowley with Roger Deakins as director of photography. That’s what I call must-see cinema.
youtube
Hustlers Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart Based on a New York Times article, former strip club employees band together to hustle their Wall Street Clients during the late 2000’s financial crisis. This looks a bit like the heist of Oceans 8 meets the real world story of Molly’s Game. It has quite a star studded female cast of movie/TV/and music stars and is directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, The Meddler.)
youtube
September 20th Downton Abbey Starring: Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Boneville, Jim Carter You love Downton Abbey, I love Downton Abbey. Everyone loves Downton Abbey. I can hear the theme song playing in my head just thinking of the movie being released. That’s right, the beloved TV series is coming to the big screen. Hopefully, it won’t be anything like the season 3 finale. (Real fans know the pain and struggle. We can’t go back to that time.) In the film, Downton Abbey will be visited by the royal family. I’m sure it will make for quite an impressive cinematic experience. As a fan of the show, I can’t wait to see it all on the big screen!
youtube
Ad Astra Starring: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler Just two months after showing the world that he doesn’t age in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is back and he’s going to space. It makes sense, fall is the only logical time to release a film in the space genre. (The Martian, Interstellar, First Man, Arrival, Gravity were all released in the fall,.) Ad Astra is all about an astronaut who takes on a mission to uncover the truth about his missing father. The film is directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z, The Immigrant). I just hope Brad Pitt gets to wear his iconic Hawaiian shirt. Audiences demand to see it again.
youtube
September 27th Judy Starring: Renée Zellweger, Finn Wittrock, Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell There’s nothing like a good biographical drama. Throw in musical numbers and it’s a hit in my eyes. Renée Zellweger stars as the iconic Judy Garland in this biopic that explores her life in 1969 as she arrives in London to perform a series of sold out concerts. Word from the Telluride Film Festival is that Renée Zellweger gives a very strong performance as Judy. Could she have an awards season run on her hands for Best Actress? We’ll see very soon!
youtube
OCTOBER
October 4th Joker Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert de Niro, Zazie Beets Joaquin Phoenix stars as the Joker in this standalone film that focuses on the origins of the DC villain. The film received an 8 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, which seems pretty excessive for any movie. I’m just not a movie applauder. It’s unnatural to me. I’m also not much of a Joker enthusiast so I can’t get too excited about this or the way it seemingly wants me to feel sympathy for the Joker. I don’t. He’s a terrorist. However, this is going to be a huge cinematic event. There are striking similarities to 70’s hit films The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver in the first trailers of the film. Director Todd Phillips clearly wanted to make a unique comic book film and this one will have people talking.
youtube
Lucy in the Sky Starring: Natalie Portman, Dan Stevens, Jon Hamm Another space movie! Fall movie season demands it. After returning from space, astronaut Lucy Cola begins to feel withdrawn and disconnected from reality. The film is loosely based on Lisa Nowak, an astronaut who lost her grip on reality after returning to earth after space travel. One thing’s for sure, with a cast including Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, and Dan Stevens, this one promises some impressive acting.
youtube
October 11 Gemini Man Starring: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen An assassin becomes the target of a mysterious government operative who can predict his every move. Soon he finds out that the mysterious operative is a clone of himself. Can Gemini Man help director Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) find critical acclaim again after 2016’s underwhelming Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
youtube
The King Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton Based on Shakespeare’s Henriad, The King follows Henry V as he takes the throne after his father’s death and navigates a kingdom filled with war, chaos, and political strife. While all of that is very interesting, I think we need to discuss the hair in this movie. First of all, there’s Timothée Chalamet’s bowl cut, which is quite a situation. So very round and tragic. Why Timothée? You know you have great hair, but the bowl cut is not your look! Then, there’s Robert Pattinson’s wig. It’s kind of amazing. The hair in this movie alone is going to keep me entertained for 2 hours. The King will be in limited release theaters on October 11th and begin streaming on Netflix November 1st.
youtube
October 18th Zombieland: Double Tap Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin This sequel comes 10 years after the popular zombie comedy first made its way to theaters. A lot has changed for the cast since 2009. Emma Stone has won an Oscar for La La Land, Jesse Eisenberg received a nomination for The Social Network, and Woody Harrelson has appeared in several projects including the Oscar nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and the critically acclaimed series True Detective. That doesn’t stop this cast for returning for a sequel!  This time around, the team is back in the American heartland to face off against evolved zombies.
youtube
The Lighthouse Starring: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe I was initially indifferent towards this movie, but after watching the trailer I have to see it just to solve the mystery of who spilled those beans! Willem Dafoe is going INSANE over it. “Why’d ya spill your beans?” Someone please answer him before he turns into the Green Goblin! This movie is about two lighthouse keepers who try to maintain their sanity while living in seclusion on a remote island in Maine. (It’s also about beans, I think). The cinematography for The Lighthouse has a unique old Hollywood feel that is very intriguing.
youtube
Jojo Rabbit Starring: Taika Watiti, Scarlett Johannson, Roman Griffin, Sam Rockwell Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) directs and stars in Jojo Rabbit, an “anti-hate satire” about a young German boy whose imaginary best friend is an idiotic version of Hitler. One day, he discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home and Jojo’s world is turned upside down. There’s no doubt this will be controversial, but the key word here is satire. Taiki Waititi is Jewish himself and the film is obviously making fun of Nazis.

NOVEMBER
November 1st The Irishman Starring: Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci Martin Scorsese’s long awaited gangster epic is finally premiering this November. The 3 1/2 hour crime drama (Scorsese loves a good 3-hour runtime!) focuses on the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran a mob hitman who played a role in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Netflix is distributing the film, but it will be available to see in select theaters on November 1st for cinematic purists. It will begin streaming on Netflix November 27th. (Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Go ahead and watch a 3-hour mafia epic with your family for the holiday! It’s Martin’s gift to you.)
youtube
Harriet Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monet, Joe Alwyn The true story of Harriet Tubman and her harrowing escape from slavery that eventually led to the Underground Railroad. Cynthia Ervio is going to be amazing in this role! She was such a breakout star in Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. Can’t wait to see her portrayal of Harriet Tubman.
youtube
Terminator: Dark Fate Starring: Mackenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger The Terminator is back. In yet another installment of the franchise that will last forever, Sarah Connor and a hybrid human must protect a young girl from a newly modified Terminator from the future.
youtube
November 8th Doctor Sleep Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay 39 years after The Shining, it’s getting a sequel. Based on the novel by Steven King, Doctor Sleep focuses on an adult Danny Torrance as he meets a girl with similar “shining” powers and tries to protect her from a cult called The True Knot. There’s a lot of talent involved in this project, but The Shining is untouchable in terms of classic movies. There’s no need to make a sequel. Not to mention, this plot summary sounds kind of weak. Consider me very skeptical that this will be good.
youtube
Last Christmas Starring: Emilia Clarke, Henry Goulding, Emma Thompson A Christmas rom-com! Let’s jump for joy because a Christmas rom com is making its way to theaters! Last Christmas is all about Kate, a depressed woman working as Santa’s elf in a department store. She keeps bumping into the same man, Tom, who may help her find happiness in the holiday season. Henry Goulding/Emilia Clarke romance+Christmas? Sounds like a recipe for the perfect holiday movie!
youtube
Honey Boy Starring: Shia Labeouf, Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe It’s no secret that Shia LaBeouf has had a chaotic lifestyle in his post-Disney days. It looks like audiences are about to find out what has gone on behind-the-scenes in Honey Boy. The film is written by LaBeouf and follows his own experiences with fame and the strained relationship with his dysfunctional father. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges will be playing Shia LaBeouf as a child and teen actor, while Shia LaBeouf will play his own father for a meta twist. As someone who grew up watching Even Stevens and saw Shia LaBeouf’s career progress, this is one of my most anticipated films of the fall.
youtube
November 15th Ford v. Ferrari Starring: Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Catriona Balfe American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles attempt to build a revolutionary race car for Ford to battle Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966. The premise of this movie reminds me a little bit of Ron Howard’s Rush which is a very underrated movie that should be watched if you haven’t seen it.
youtube
The Report Starring: Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, Tim Blake Nelson The Report is a political drama about an FBI agent’s investigation into the CIA’s torture practice on suspected terrorists after 9/11. Adam Driver stars in the film and he’s about to have a major fall movie season. The Report and Marriage Story (more on that one a little later) could easily get him awards buzz. In fact, I predict he’ll be nominated for an Oscar for one of those roles. Plus, he’ll be in Star Wars in December. You’ll be seeing a lot of him in the next few months.
youtube
Charlie’s Angels Starring: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Elizabeth Banks Did we need another Charlie’s Angels reboot after the 2000’s movie trilogy and the ABC TV show? No. Yet there’s nothing Hollywood loves to more than to reboot a franchise we’ve just seen! This time around the angels are played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinski. Elizabeth Banks is directing and co-starring in the project.
youtube
November 22nd Frozen 2 Starring: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf go on an adventure to an enchanted autumn forest to find the origin of Elsa’s powers and save their land. Just when everyone finally got Let it Go out of their heads, Disney is gonna hit us with another Frozen movie. I have to admit, I’m intrigued by the concept of the autumn forest. We need more movies that take place in the fall! It should be it’s own sub-genre.
youtube
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Starring: Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson He’s already played Walt Disney, Captain Phillips, and Sully so it’s fitting that Tom Hanks would play Mr. Rogers on the list of “America’s favorite people” up next. The movie is all about the friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. I cannot wait to see this. If you haven’t watched the documentary about Fred Rogers called Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, do it before this is released! It’s going to add so much depth to the cinematic experience.
youtube
November 27th Knives Out Starring: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette When a famous crime novelist is found dead on his estate, a detective is enlisted to investigate the family. Knives Out is directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, The Last Jedi) and packed with stars. It looks a bit like Bad Times at the El Royale meets the style of a Wes Anderson movie. I’m very interested in the central mystery at play here, but I can’t lie, Chris Evans is the reason I’ll go to the theater for this.
youtube
December 6th Marriage Story Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern This one is gonna be majorly sad, so let’s all take some time to prepare ourselves. A stage director and his actress wife struggle as their marriage falls apart and they proceed with a difficult coast-to-coast divorce. Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha) directed the film which has already been receiving high praise from early festival screenings. This will definitely draw comparisons to Kramer vs. Kramer and Baumback’s The Squid and the Whale based on the trailer’s tone. The juxtaposition of the couple’s happy memories vs. the court scene at the end of the trailer is just heartbreaking. Marriage Story will be available to stream on Netflix December 6th.
youtube
December 13th A Hidden Life Starring: August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts Few movies have affected me the way Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life have. It’s certainly not a movie for everyone, but it works for me. The unconventional narrative, epic cinematography, and orchestral score are unforgettable. Critics from festival screenings have said that A Hidden Life is his best work since The Tree of Life meaning I’ll need to see it ASAP. The film is based on a true story about an Austrian farmer named Franz Jaggerstatter who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. The trailer looks beautiful and poetic.
youtube
December 20th Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Starring: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega The latest Star Wars trilogy will complete with The Rise of Skywalker. Taking place after The Last Jedi, the members left in the Resistance will face the First Order once again. The conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches a breaking point bringing the Skywalker saga to an end. I have so many questions about this movie! Was Kylo Ren actually lying to Rey about her parents in The Last Jedi? Could they really be important people? Will she turn to the dark side like this preview suggests? (I hope not). Why is Palpatine (the villain who died in Return of the Jedi) talking in all of the trailers? Thankfully, J.J. Abrams is returning as director for The Rise of Skywalker to answer all of my questions and hopefully deliver a great Star Wars film.
youtube
Jumanji: The Next Level Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest surprise box office hits in recent years, appealing to people of all age groups. It’s no surprise that The Next Level is being released so quickly after the massive success of Welcome to the Jungle. This time around, the group goes back into the game, but a few of their grandfather’s are sucked in as well. That means Kevin Hart will be playing Danny Glover and Dwayne Johnson will be portraying Danny DeVito.
youtube
Cats Starring: Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift Forget Star Wars, forget A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, forget A Hidden Life. Disregard everything on this list. Cats is going to be the cinematic moment of 2019! That CGI? Legendary! The actors could have worn cat suits or make up like the stage play, but director Tom Hooper decided that this is the 21st century…time to try out a new technique called digital fur technology! So now this movie exists. It’s difficult to describe what this digital fur technology looks like, but it’s not cats. I will say the trailer was released with plenty of time before the movie gets to theaters so there’s hope that the finished product will look way better than the original trailer. If I’m being totally honest, I love anything musical, so I’m totally going to see this.
youtube
December 25th Little Women Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern Greta Gerwig’s highly ancitipated second film is a remake of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel, Little Women. You all know the story, but I’ll do a quick plot recap anyway. Little Women is told through the eyes of Jo March as she recounts her life growing up with her 3 sisters: Meg, Amy, and Beth. Each have their own distinct personalities, but have a very strong bond with each other. The film reunites Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet as Jo March and Laurie for a mini-Lady Bird reunion. It also contains a little Big Little Lies reunion with Meryl Streep and Laura Dern. What a great Christmas day release!
youtube
That concludes this Fall Movie Preview! As you can tell, there are tons of movies releasing this season in all genres. What are you most excited to see this fall?

you're idiot for defending other m. other m is known for destroying samus' backstory by including things that were never mentioned before. therefore, you are not a metroid fan and a sexist if you like other m.
My turn? My turn.
First, let’s look at that first statement of your argument.
“Other M is known for destroying Samus’ backstory by including things that were never mentioned before”
Tumblr media
You and half of the Metroid Fanbase that claim to be ‘true’ fans of the series seem to think you know everything about Samus’ backstory. And while it’s true that the backstory of Metroid isn’t always the focus of the series, but you seem to have forgotten something about the backstory of Samus Aran.
Exhibit A: Adam Malkovich. Metroid fans seem to hate this dude, but he’s always been apart of the series. Even before Other M.
Yes. You read that right grey face. Adam has always been apart of the Metroid lore.
Wanna know when we first got to know about Adam? From Metroid Fusion. A game that is critically acclaimed among fans and critics alike as one of the best Metroid games out there.
In that game, you find out that the Galactic Federation takes the minds of their greatest generals and makes digital copies of them to upload into a computer in case something happened to said commander/general.
Guess what? Adam was seen as one of the greatest generals ever in the Federation. And at the end of Metroid Fusion, you find out that the computer that has been giving you orders the entire time through out the game is indeed, Adam Malkovich.
And this would not be his only appearance in the franchise.
Tumblr media
You see, if you and half of the fan base were to actually do research, you would find out that there was in fact, a manga of Metroid. And in fact this manga, is canon to the series plot!
This manga in fact, goes into more detail about Samus’ backstory than any other Metroid game out there. As it literally serves as the stepping stones for everything that happened to Samus in her life before she became the most feared and well known bounty hunter in the galaxy.
Guess who also was in the manga and had a significant part of its story?
You guessed right. Adam Malkovich. Who was not only one of her few friends in the Federation, but one of her many surrogate fathers. In fact, during one chapter in the manga when Samus finds out that her home planet is being invaded by the Space Pirates, and the Federation won’t let her go back to Zebes to stop them, guess who was the only one to allow her to go back in secret to try and save her adopted world?
You guessed right again. It was Adam.
So no, Adam did not just ‘appear’ in Other M. He had always been apart of the series lore even BEFORE Other M came to development. (Even though I will admit, the Varia Suit activation until you fight the lava boss is stupid as hell.)
And let’s address something else real fast too since this is still on the topic of Samus’ backstory.
We all know what it is. It’s this bastard in the Metroid universe.
Tumblr media
Yes. Ridley. We all know the scene I’m talking about. As I do not want to play the clip, allow me to tell you something interesting about Samus’ lil PTSD moment with the Space Pirate commander in that scene in Other M.
You see, people say Mother Brain is Samus’ arch nemesis. This is in fact, false. Yes Mother Brain is often the primary antagonist in the games that she’s in, but Ridley is the Bounty Hunter’s arch nemesis. And has been since Ridley’s pirates destroyed her original home world.
“But she wouldn’t have freaked out the way she did in Other M!”
Tumblr media
We again, go back into the manga.
In the manga, specifically chapter 1, we see the first time Samus and Ridley ever met with one another. Samus was merely 3 years old when she bumped into the space dragon. And at first, she wanted to try and make friends with him as she believed that they could be friends after she met Old Bird of the Chozo.
However, since this is Ridley we’re talking about here, he decided that he was going to kill her, right there and then. And almost did were it not for Samus’ mother barely managing to keep her daughter alive before the space dragon could kill the girl who would become the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy.
Years later, in said manga, Samus and Ridley have another encounter with one another.
And if you thought the break down in Other M was bad? Then you have awholenother thing coming with Samus’ break down in the manga.
In Other M, she took a few steps back and lost her suit. In the manga? Not only did she not MOVE ONCE, she couldn’t breathe, her body locked up, and she had dived down into a fear induced madness that nearly got her killed. In fact after Ridley left, she was begging everyone around her to KILL HER because she was so terrified by the sight of Ridley.
Later on she would have to work to overcome her fear of him, and up until the final battle she had with him in Super, she was able to maintain that control.
And as to why she freaked out in Other M?
She saw him DIE. On an exploding PLANET. Meaning that Ridley could by no means necessary, unless it was the meddling of the Galactic Federation, could ever come back to life.
Come to find out on the bottle ship, they cloned everything from Planet Zebes. Meaning guess who came back to life unintentionally?
That’s right. Ridley.
And again, Other M takes places MONTHS after the end of Super Metroid. Meaning that the last time Samus saw her arch nemesis was on an exploding PLANET. You don’t get that much deader than being killed on a planet, and then having said planet EXPLODE.
Of course she’s going to freak out at first because Ridley fucking DIED. Like, full on DIED. The only way he was gonna come back from an exploding planet was from being cloned by the dumbasses in the GFD. Which, as we saw in the events of Other M, SAW THAT HAPPEN.
Tumblr media
So unless you can disprove FACTS FROM THE MANGA, which the creator himself stated is canon to the over all plot of Metroid, I highly suggest you do our homework before you come at me making claims up that you don’t have the sources to back up your arguments.
Until then I am done with people and their arguing about Other M.
Have a nice fucking day, Grey Face.

Brunch Over Business
Tagging → Jesse St. James [with Cole Kingston & Viviana Rose] Time Frame →  10:45 a.m. | June 20, 2017 Location → Motta-St. James Residence | Tribeca, Manhattan, NY General Notes → Brunch bananas and another career shift
It was the rare occasion that a late night meant a late morning, and Jesse was thankful he was able to catch up on some sleep. He actually had the energy to eat more than a bowl of cold cereal and tend to Viviana’s needs. Getting up when he heard her babbling in her crib, Jesse had taken her downstairs to get food going, cooking oatmeal for himself and picking out some past favorites for the little. A spoon for him, a spoon for her--they’d done this routine before. He’d be done in time for the Skype meeting with his agent at 11:30. Or he would have been if the sixteen-month-old Motta-St. James wasn’t rejecting her dining experience like the little princess that she was. He even had to start his oatmeal all over after the first batch overcooked.
No avocado. No peaches. No pears. No applesauce. No blueberries. No cottage cheese. He was running out of options and from her whines in the high chair, Viviana was running out of patience. One cup of yogurt and half of the last banana on the counter later, she was pacified, lips pursing and smacking with each baby bite offered from the super small silver spoon. She was cute, that much couldn’t be denied. Cute and difficult. A spoon for him, a spoon for her; back and forth, nearly in a rhythm until it was broken by the ring of a video call coming through on Jesse’s laptop that was on the table in front of them.
“Shit,” Jesse said, checking the time again on his phone. “Ooh, you didn’t hear that.” He’d been so busy trying to get Viviana to eat something for breakfast, he didn’t realize how much time had actually passed. What felt like ten minutes had been close to forty-five. He hadn’t even changed out of his pajamas, a pair of red sweatpants and a gray shirt that was now smudged with yogurt. How was it that her food ended up on his clothes?
It was just Cole anyway. He could handle the sight of a young, handsome, slightly disheveled father even if he’d probably have some choice words about it. Jesse answered the call, turning away to move the high chair closer to where he’d be sitting for the video chat.
“My God... the wedding was less than a month ago, and you’ve already let yourself go,” Cole quipped as his client appeared on the screen, shifting the laptop for a clear view.
Rolling his eyes, Jesse sat back in the chair, coming face-to-face with his agent. “I didn’t realize I was being evaluated. I might have freshened up.”
“You know by now to always be prepared. Where is Sugar, by the way?”
“She’s here. We started the day a little later than planned, so...this is brunch,” he explained, turning at the sound of Viviana’s call of “Daddy” to find her trying to worm out of the high chair.
Cole had two kids at home, but it had been some time since they were in diapers. “Adorable...” he said, briefly watching Jesse interact with the toddler as he stirred a bowl of oatmeal. “However, we do have some business to discuss.”
“Cooksey?”
“Cooksey,” Cole confirmed. “They want an answer by the 28th. The meeting has already been penciled in, and there’s a plane ticket to L.A. with your name on it.”
“They want me to come to L.A.? Why? What if I say no?” Jesse asked, taking the banana bowl from the table to scoop out more for the baby. Viviana’s hands reached for her father’s as he brought another bite of food to her lips, trying to take the spoon from him that he wouldn’t let go.
“Sit down with the team, let them make their last plea. You know, people would be clawing to be in your position. One of the biggest shows on TV right now is courting you and you’re seriously considering saying no?” It was hard for Cole to believe it. Cooksey was critically-acclaimed, Emmy-nominated, a network’s Nielsen dream come true; and Jesse was treating it as if it was beneath him. “I trust your judgment, I do. You fought for the role in Galilei and made it to the top floor of theatre circuit because of your belief that you’d found something good.”
“And that’s what I worry will happen again,” Jesse admitted, “except this time I won’t be able to drop everything and get back to the stage because I’ll be tied down to another project.” That they were even having this conversation was a privilege and Jesse knew it. If this was happening even just five years ago, there wouldn’t have been any hesitation. Such was the struggle of being a relevant cross-platform hit.
Just as Cole began to reply, Viviana’s tiny taps on the tray became full bangings of little hands as her voice picked up in volume, babbling a mix of words and gibberish. “I’m sorry, give me a second.” Jesse twisted from his chair and stood, unbuckling his daughter from her seat. Leaving behind an echo of child laughter, he bounded upstairs with Viviana on his hip and her bowl of breakfast in his hand. Quickly apologizing to Sugar as he delivered the small girl to their bed, he delicately set her food on the nightstand with a rushed explanation that he had to finish his meeting with Cole. “We’ve already crossed the line of proper business meeting etiquette, I think,” he said to the other man when he sat back down at the dining table.
“Tell me about it.” Cole’s exasperation was nothing new. “Jesse, just let me know if I’m wasting my time. If you wanted to do it, you would have already said yes...”
“Well, wait... that’s not entirely true. My life is completely different than it was when I first booked the show three years ago, and I didn’t think becoming a regular was something that should be taken lightly. I had to consider what that meant for me and my family.”
“Do you think I don’t--” “I want the job.” “--understand that--what? What did you say just now?”
“I said I want the job, Cole,” Jesse repeated as they were no longer speaking over each other. “I had to think about it, but I’m not an idiot. I mean, they’re moving the whole show to New York for me. It’s the least I could do.”
“Okay, you know they aren’t moving the show for you. Don’t be an asshole,” Cole laughed. “And please do not tell them that in the meeting.”
“Didn’t I just say I’m not an idiot?”
“I know you, Jess. You’d say it with a smile on your face.”
“And everyone would laugh, you know me.”
Cole shook his head. “I’m glad I’m not your publicist.” Part of him wanted to chastise Jesse for taking him through the ringer with this opportunity, but this wasn’t the first time and probably wouldn’t be the last. What couldn’t be denied was that Jesse always came through with the right decision for his career when all was said and done. “So you’re definitely in? I can pass along the message?”
Nodding, Jesse relaxed in his chair. The weight of pressure finally leaving him as he spoke. “I’m definitely in.”
Cole grinned. “Alright, it’s a deal. We can finalize everything when you get to L.A., and I’ll give them a call right now.”
“With me on Skype...?”
“No, I’m hanging up. Unless there was something else we needed to discuss?”
“Oh you know what, there is something,” Jesse said thoughtfully as he ran a hand through his hair that was once again getting long. “I’m thinking about shaving my head...”
The Skype call disconnected before Jesse could get the rest of the sentence out, and he rolled his eyes. A buzzing noise from a kitchen counter made him reach for his phone moments later, and he breathed a laugh at the message illuminating the screen from Cole:
DO NOT SHAVE YOUR HEAD JESSE.

The Bodyguard ch.8
Chapter 1    Chapter 2 Chapter 3    Chapter 4 Chapter 5    Chapter 6 Chapter 7
Here is the latest from the critically acclaimed cross over AU fic, The Bodyguard.  Written by @alittlemissfit and yours truly!
“We’re going to the office, Fox. Your father’s found you a permanent bodyguard.” “Great. A new babysitter,” Mulder snorts.
She sits in the waiting room feeling like an idiot.
What am I doing here? I know he’s going to live, I did all I could already. Why can’t I leave? Why can't I make myself leave?
Her hands ball into fists on her lap in frustration. It feels like some unknown force is holding her in place and she hates it, yet obeys it.
“Damn it,” she mutters, rubbing her forehead and staring at her shoes.
“Ms. Scully?” a man asks as she frowns, shakes her head. Running her hands down her face she looks up at the doctor.
“Yes?”
“I just wanted to inform you that your friend is stable. Remarkably he’s walking away from this with only a mild concussion and a hairline fracture to his left ankle,” the doctor says, looking up from the clipboard in his hands back at her.
Scully nods thoughtfully, wondering what the hell she’s going to do next.
“You can go in and see him if you’d like. We’re going to keep him here for observation until this afternoon but then he’ll be free to go. Are you going to  be the one taking care of him?”
“Uh… no,” Scully says, getting to her feet. “I just was at the scene when it happened, I’m not... Is he conscious?” she asks, having difficulty meeting the doctor’s eyes.
“Yes. And that’s alright. We have some other contacts for him that have been called. I just wanted to make you aware of the situation, make sure that you weren’t-”
“I understand. What room is he in?”
The doctor gives her directions to Fox’s room that Scully follows in a fugue state. When she makes it to his door she pauses, looks in the small window to the right of the door to see into his room.
He’s reclined in bed with his eyes shut and a nurse is looking over his charts. The woman, a tall, leggy brunette, moves to stand by the side of his bed. Able to see her better, Scully swallows hard, tries to work up the nerve to go in. Nearing the open door though she promptly stops in her tracks, now able to hear their conversation.
“Give it to me straight, Nurse...uh.”
“Shelby.”
“Nurse Shelby. In your professional opinion, am I gonna make it?” Fox asks with a flirtatious smile.
Shelby’s melodic laugh makes it’s way to the hallway, turning Scully’s stomach.
“I’d say your chances are good. We might need to run a few more tests though. Just to make sure.”
The seductive tone in her voice coupled with her sexy laugh, her looks, Scully shakes her head, realizes sticking around was a huge mistake. Turning on her heel she moves quickly down the hall. Grateful at least that she’d come to her senses, hadn’t barged in the room and made a bigger fool of herself.
“We might need to run a few more tests though. Just to make sure.”
Shelby purrs, tracing a manicured finger down Mulder’s bicep. He lightly laughs, flashes what he hopes comes off as a charming smile. In his present state though he can’t be completely sure. The slightest movement, even speaking, sends pain through his head and this is no exception. Groaning he slumps back further in the pillows, shuts his eyes.
His recollection of the accident is fuzzy, but bits and pieces come back to him in flashes.
He remembered the car being t-boned and the subsequent flip landing them in a ditch. Horrifying memories give way though to calmer ones. He can still hear a soft alto voice, feel soft, cool fingers brushing the hair back on his forehead.
Opening his eyes a crack he looks at Shelby who’s now standing at the foot of the bed, scribbling something in his chart.
“Do you know who it was that found me?”  he asks curiously.
Frowning Shelby looks up.
“You mean at the scene?” she asks as he nods gingerly.
Shrugging she moves back to the side of his bed.
“You’d have to ask one of the EMTs. I think their names are on the chart.” Reviewing it Shelby chews her lip before glancing up, remembering something.
“They said though there was someone in the waiting room for you. Would you like me to check if they’re still there?”
“Yeah, if you could,” Mulder says, wondering who the hell would be out there waiting for him.
He doubts it’s the Smoking Man. He was up front in the car and even if he did survive his injuries, he doubts they’d release him this soon. Mild curiosity comes over him about the status of his new guard, the status of the driver who t-boned them. He loses the train of thought though when his doctor comes back in the room.
“Mr. Mulder?” he asks, getting a nod.
“Nurse Andrews said you were curious about the woman who found you at the scene.”
“Yeah. I’d like to speak to her if she’s around,” Mulder says as the doctor frowns, looking perplexed.
“I thought that she’d be in here, actually. She asked for your floor and room number. I guess she must’ve changed her mind.” he shrugs.
“Anyway, we’re going to put in a call to your emergency contact. Is there anything else that you-”
“Do you have the woman’s name?” Mulder asks.
“Let me see here.”
Rifling through the paperwork in his hand he nods.
“We have a ‘Ms. Scully’ listed here.”
“Thanks.” Mulder says. The doctor exits then, after giving him instructions to rest and relax.
The doctor nodded and gave him instructions to rest before leaving the room. He ran the mysterious woman’s name through his mind over and over but couldn’t place her. He groaned and closed his eyes trying again to remember her but coming up with nothing.
When Scully reaches the car she lets out a groan, bumps her head into the steering wheel once, then twice. Trying to figure out what the hell is compelling her to act this way. Over a one night stand no less. Her oncoming headache is broken by the ringing of her cell phone and she lets out another groan, pushes the button to answer the call.
“Scully,” she mutters.
“Dana, it’s Walter Skinner.”
“Hello, sir.”  Straightening up in her seat she clears her throat. “What can I do for you?”
“I’ve been informed that we’ll have to move the Cambridge meeting to later tonight,” Skinner says, sounding even more gruff and no nonsense over the phone.
“That’s fine. What time is it being rescheduled for?” Scully asks, rubbing her eyebrows.
“Would 9:00 be too late for you? We just got word that our client is in the hospital.”
“Oh my God. Is he alright?” she asks, trying not to panic over the fact her detail had already landed himself in the hospital. “Was he attacked?”
“He’s set to be released but he’s going to need monitoring over the next twenty four hours. Mr. Mulder said he’d like if you could take the spare room at the estate. Start working the detail right away.”
“Sure. I...I can do that, sir. Not a problem.”
“Good. I’ll meet you at the residence in my car. If you arrive before I do wait in your car until I get there. For your initial introduction, especially to Mr. Mulder’s wife, it’s better for the sake of appearances that I’m there to-”
“I understand. I’ll be there at nine.”
“I’ll see you then. And try and relax, Agent. You’ll be fine.”
“Thank you sir,” Scully says before hanging up. Hoping that he’s right.

Have you ever wondered what could have been if Kevin Smith directed Men in Black? Us either because that’s kind of a dumb thing to wonder. Besides, why obsess about “What ifs?” when you could be reading the defining sci-fi-rom-com-dram-actioner of our time! From the writer of The Bunker and the artist of My Little Pony—wait really? Okay, I guess we’ll go with it—comes an alien invasion the likes of which have never before been seen by human eyes.
The space invaders are real. They’re here. They’re mean. And they’re standing in judgement over the citizens of Earth. The human race’s final exam. They’ve chosen a single champion to test and, unfortunately for us, it’s none other than Jeff Steinberg. Romantically challenged idiot, video store clerk, constipated, confused, distractible. In other words, the planet is totally doomed.
