Minor almost godly spirits which are basically personifications of the Paladir/Necrome thing: Undine and Necro, respectively (come on even his name fits)

Regular unaffiliated humans: Goldlewis, Vernon, Daryl (I might make him a hupper..? but maybe he'd then be too similar to Ky) Crow

Steamer: Haehyun and Zappa (that or a hupper or unaffiliated..)

Steamer adjacent robot or something: Robo-Ky and RK MK II

Srams: Millia and Venom

Roublards: Zato and Zako A

Shushus: Eddie, Lucifero, Roger, S-KO, Angra, the bad guy that got ahold of Judgment and Paracelsus

As for Leopaldon.. I don't know. Maybe the human is an osa, the dog is a milou and the gear is a shushu but.. Dunno. Leopaldon is Leopaldon lmao

Idk for Ariels either.. Maybe a hupper?? Probably I'll go the boring routes or make her (spoiler) canon in this au, as the gg one, or just a high level shushu

Goldlewis' coffin friend: A very minor god who's almost in the verge of disappearing due to people not believing in them. Their only believer? Goldlewis, but he believes they're an unexplained monster (monster as in the kros.moz definition where they just commonly exist) so, they're there but not that powerful..

Janvis or whatever the jellyfish cat is called: Chacha :)

*ofc hybrid classes are a topic of contention but, they are Technically canon yet very rare. Asuka is straight up a Hupper, and probably was one before, but his perspective about pain and his eye thing that remind me of larmes de sang (sacrieur technique) so he became both. Sacrimages is a made-up word, but with Nitura calling hybrid classes a combination of their names (ex: osadida) I thought Sacrimage would fit the bill.

the vibe im getting from FHJY is that this is the season where they really lean into the high school aspect. that probably sounds bonkers since its called Fantasy High, but like. hear me out.

Freshman year, they come at high school from the "John Hughes" "80s teen movie trope" vibe, which is to say different from the real-world experience of high school.

it works great! operating in that frame of reference makes everything flow really well, and hits all the high-school-related-media notes in a very satisfying way while putting its own spin on it and not getting bogged down by the actual slog that is high school in reality.

there's still a lot of more modern inspo, but it stays in the kinda expectation-suspension-tropey area of how 80s movie high school works.

Sophomore year is spring break! I believe in you! They're not at school! They're on an adventure!

They lean into being a teenager and coming-of-age themes a lot (obvs), but the only big reference point to the institution of high school is that it'll be worth 60% of their grade.

A huge point, to be sure, and the exact kind of objectively unfair but somehow not against the rules shit that happens in high school, but not the main driving force of the season.

arthur aguefort also does a bunch of wack shit but it's more fantasy than it is high school although its a lot of both.

they lean into adventuring as a set career path much more, with the school giving money for hirelings and offering a basic incentive for other students to go, so that's a loose connection to the real-world career counseling high schools have, but again, not the main thing.

VERY Important though: we are now very much in the present. The viral shrimp party, livestreaming Kalina, online banking, the epic of Gorgug building a cell tower? this isn't john hughes 80s town anymore, this is now. (at least in Solace).

Junior year

almost everything in the trailer is about academia

we've got the cool doodles-in-the-margins style art and intro

in the interviews and BTS (so far), the cast have talked a lot about what they were like in high school (not the 80s)

and the precedent that The Seven set where the MacGuffin was getting their GED? It's time.

we're getting into what is actually hell about high school - the institution itself. the arbitrary standards that academia in the US holds, and how it leaves behind, punishes, and fails its students in its extremely important role of preparing them for life as an adult.

i could talk about this all day, but personally for me the quote from the trailer that shot me back to my junior year of high school was "You have perfect grades, and it still might not be enough for you to graduate"

riz's arc this season is shaping up to punch me in the academia trauma and personally i can't wait for the catharsis

Brennan has shown time and time again that he Gets and wants to tell stories about the ways in which the US education system affects, hurts, shapes, traumatizes, changes people, and how they survive and recover from it and make their own lives. I for one am so so ready to see that reflected with the bad kids.

my pretty pile ones you all got Aladdin as your disney couple ♡ when watching the movie everything feels and look intense, like you're in there and not watching it through a screen. the romance between you and your f/s feels real. ever lie to yourself about how strong a connection was? like "omg he and I are soulmates I know it" type of stuff? yeah with this person you don't know it, you feel it. it feels real. Aladdin plays on illusion a lot, Aladdin himself lies to Jasmine about his status to make her give him a chance, but if there's one thing that was never faked it was the connection. the love between Aladdin and Jasmine. you two are the same, this connection can't be faked it's the real deal. elements of the couple that could mix into you and your f/s could be your f/s pursuing you with the same determination that Aladdin did with Jasmine. seeing you from afar and having to have you. meeting you, not even knowing your name but wanting it all. the world could also work in funny ways in your story like it did in Aladdin. meeting by fate. the universe working with your f/s to get them what they want. you two are going to meet and want to share view points and share your stories of how you collectively got to that point in your life. their going to want to show you what they know, all they know, and you're going to accept with open arms.

also make sure that if you got nothing else from this reading you get this at least; you two are very different. like from completely different worlds. this could point to cultural differences, economic differences ect. but bottomline is you two are on unequal footing in some way.

why is that my sad pile always have a hot f/s? stop it fr 😭 my dear pile two, you and your f/s most resemble Hercules and Megan!! not only does this tell me that your f/s is a certified hot dreamy masterpiece BUT I can also see that you and your spouse are definitely into each other sexually a lot more than my other piles. your f/s is a sucker for the sad people of the world ngl they just want to fix and help everyone. pile 2, something important in about you and your f/s would be that you, like Megan, will be going through a hard time when you meet. something toxic will be reigning over your life (this could be a friend, relative, partner ect) and this person will see that.they're obvs, in true Hercules fashion, going to want to even protect you from it at times if need be. if any of you have ever seen this movie you'd know that Megan betrays Hercules and honestly I'm kinda seeing it here as well. the conflict of the story seems to be the same. someone feeling betrayed. "you said you were with me" type of vibe. you don't like that they help everyone. in fact it might even be that you never wanted or asked for their help! it irks you at first. and this is going to sound so bad but you might want to get to know them at first only for their looks 😭 or because you have something to gain from it. with time though, even though people DO NOT want you together, you will come to fall in love with their sensitivity and their good nature. not everyone has an angle, or is mean, and not everyone is the same, and you will come to realize this with your person. cute ♡

pile 3 how lucky u are 😭 in this pile we got Tiana and Naveen as your disney counterpart!! not only can we infer then that your f/s is as easy going as prince naveen but we also got the royalty oracle card which means that they're royalty that they're certainly as influential as he is. dear pile 3 you know what love is. you've seen it, you've heard about it, you've read about it. you know HOW to love. patient, loving, kind, that is you. you've begun to live in your divine feminine energy. you have no time for others! you focus on yourself, love yourself, put yourself first. your f/s is a fool - wait no sorry the fool as in metaphorically they take after these traits strongly. they're eager to try new things, they keep their mind open to opportunities and always looks for LIFE. they're alive, they want to make sure other people take advantage of it (their words not mine 😭) lmao they're a bit full of themselves. the candle of everyone's eye etc. honestly you might not even know if you love them or are annoyed by them half them time. or so you tell yourself. true love lies tried and true here. this love is gradual and it takes time and effort but once you tw begin to explore each other's personalities we see love that is hard to undo. you don't come back from this. two people become one. they chase one goal. they chase a future. they promise you forever. you know you love them because you couldn't imagine it differently. true true love.

DO I NEED TO SAY MORE?? pile four, you all got cinderella and prince charming as the couple you two resemble. and before you throw a shoe at me let me just say that 1. I love the first cinderella movie and 2. that being said I will always pick the third one over the first one. and so that's the one I'll be focusing on for now :) because we all know that both of them weren't all there in the first movie 😵‍💫 now to start off with your f/s and yourself. if there's a pinnacle of love in this world you two have reached it with your connection. this is TRUE LOVE. like ultimate love. the world has blessed you pile four. marriage, no - union is inevitable here. you two are from very different worlds. if there are levels to this you two could be on opposite sides. but that's just what makes it all the more crazy when you meet. how, you might ask yourself later when everything happens, did I meet this person when our lives are completely different?? but the answer would simply then be that it was meant to be. how did cinderella always find her prince? fate. destiny. how did they just know with a simple touch that they were the "one" for each other? fate. destiny. it ties in for you and your f/s just as much as it did for them. pile four you might think at first that this isn't meant to be, that this is unrequited, that you and your person could never function together and be ONE but time will tell you eventually that you got it all wrong. you might even reject them at first too 😭 remember cinderella running from the prince when the clock struck 12? yeah, she was fleeing because of time but you're going to be fleeing because you're scared. scared of the connection. this might be the first time you really fall in love pile four. let them in when they come knocking on your door. as the old saying goes "if the shoe fits, wear it." sending you love.

To me the core theme of arcane is this specific type of conflict that repeats over and over again in all the main aspects of the story that centers around 'sibling relationships'.

Starting with the two cities. We have Piltover and the bad side of Piltover. Technically they're supposed to be one and the same but one is the 'golden privileged child' while the other is disadvantaged and needs to rely on the rich side of Piltover for support, they can't do it by themselves. And then the rich side of Piltover fails in its duties of taking care of/protecting/supporting/whatever the poorer side and a split happens. Zaun is created and it becomes so dangerous and volatile, it becomes a menace and an active threat to itself/the outside and there's no going back. It's the monster Piltover created and even tho the Undercity suffered unfairly at this point it has become so monstrous there may be no improvement/redemption for it.

And obvs that's the exact same thing that happens with Vander/Silco and Vi/Jinx. However it's also imo completely applicable to Jayce/Viktor and even Heimer/Singed. Jayce and Viktor will only reach their break-up era in future seasons but it's a given this will happen but I know I obvs need to explain the Heimer/Singed example.

Based on what we know about them Heimer is just naturally immortal/long-living, how lucky for him, and completely lacks any ability to relate to beings who from his perspective live short life-spans. Meanwhile Singed is just a human and on top of that he had a 10yo child who died from some kind of disease(maybe?). Currently he is obsessed with discovering immortality: experimenting on ppl, mutating them, resurrecting corpses etc. possibly in an attempt to find a way to heal/resurrect his daughter. And we know him and Heimer were partners and that Heimer didn't help him and threw him out of the university or smth for his research. So the exact same dynamic as the other pairs.

So notice how we've got the cities, and then each city has its storyline, and each storyline has a pair of protags who reflect the conflict between the cities, and then each pair also has the pair that preceded them which also reflects the same conflict. In Zaun all these connections are about family ties: brothers, sisters, fathers/daughters, with inherited political/social roles like the Piltover sympathizer and criminal/revolutionary. Meanwhile Piltover storyline connections are about 'progress': science buddies, mentors and students, with Jayce succeeding Heimer as the barely-scientist-moreso-a-politician and Singed/Viktor being mad scientists. We've even got zaunite 'older siblings' associating with Piltover and piltovan 'younger siblings' being from/associating with Zaun.

Just really nice parallels all around.

But I actually have an honorable mention to add here at the end lol.

Mylo and Claggor. Obvs they don't quite fit cos they never develop into this kinda dynamic and they were never meant to but I can't help but notice the similarities. Claggor being the pure hearted hero archetype, looking like Vander, naturally good fighter, seemingly lacking insecurities, seems like the 'second in command' after Vi (second best with the fighting machine, Vander speaks to him second to get info about what happened), meanwhile Mylo giving off 3rd child vibes, full of insecurities and needing to prove himself, physically looks like a stick bug, a bit of a bully, "weird" lock-picking talents that he struggles with and isn't respected for (like Singed/Viktor's science, Powder's bombs or Silco's dream) that are actually super useful and impressive (like he could have been robbing millions from Piltover banks if he got adopted by Silco instead lol).

The kids of the manor don't really like him all that much (except for sally, but she likes everybody), and he doesn't like them

So when you toddle over to where he and heff are hanging out at on the second floor, he gets kind of anxious

He's playing mario 64, so thats good, but he and jeff tend to have pretty foul mouths and they are both nicotine addicts

He just doesn't wanna do anything that could bring up trauma for you

But instead, you decide to crawl up onto the couch between the two, looking up at BEN and asking if you can play

ALRIGHT! WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER ANALYSIS/THEORY

So I was talking to my sibs about the fact that in season 3, it oddly enough, seems like Mk is getting his powers back faster than Monkey King is, even with the meditation stuff this Monkey’s doing, which seems odd.

One of the first lessons Monkey King teaches Mk after the pilots in episode 1 Bad Weather is that “In order to have full control of your powers, you need self confidence.” And not just the flashy kind, not just the talking louder so you feel bigger, but like, true belief in yourself and your abilities. 

Along with the often repeated “Just believe in yourself and you can do anything” saying he’s so fond of, which literally was the first lesson he ever taught Mk in the pilots. But what if that’s literally it. 

What if the strength of Monkey King’s powers is based almost 100% on how much he believes in himself, (coupled with a lot of practice and mastery ofc because self-confidence comes from mastery) which could attest to what comes off as blind confidence sometimes and might seem frustrating to other people when he seems to refuse to admit he can’t do things. Because as long as he doesn’t admit that, he can do those things. 

In Journey to the West there’s a moment when someone drops a mountain on him again and although right after being freed from the initial Mountain he was imprisoned under, which he literally picked up and chucked the moment he was freed from it, but this time his self confidence drops like a stone monkey in water (severe PTSD WOO) and he cannot lift this mountain. They have to go get these other spirits to come help lift it off of him because Monkey King is trapped. 

The moment he gets trapped in his own head too much, it’s over. 

(Disclaimer: I’m not saying this is actually what happens in the book as far as the reason he wasn’t able to lift the mountain, do not take this as fact or reference I just thought it was a neat detail that seems to kinda tie into this theory, but it is just a neat thought thanks.)

The next bit here could just be a storytelling choice, but I find it very interesting that both times when Mk looses his powers, the first thing the other party does is beat down his self-confidence. 

When Macaque is working to take Mk’s powers, instead of building Mk’s confidence, he tears it down with the whole making Mk feel like he needs to surpass expectations to prove himself and succeed

along with changing his belief in himself and his skill, to his belief in Macaque and his teachings. 

“What? But last time I couldn’t even hit it?” 

“Totally. But since then you’ve had me teaching you.” 

Macaque never builds Mk’s self-confidence, he redirects it to himself. Believe in me. I’m the only reason you’re succeeding. You’re a weapon trained by ME. 

“Don’t you feel stronger?” 

He pushes Mk to do things before he’s ready so the self-confidence just isn’t there. 

And then once Mk chooses to put his trust in Macaque instead of himself, that’s when the rest of the seal is filled (also cause power usage obv) and when Macaque finally swoops in to steal his powers. 

The Lady Bone Demon literally gets inside Mk’s head. 

Makes him doubt his mentor and shakes his belief in himself and then beats him into the ground when he’s at his lowest and when his confidence is shattered she takes his powers one by one. 

With Macaque, all Mk had to do was remember he wasn’t a weapon, Macaque’s training wasn’t what defined him, regain a bit of that confidence vibe while Monkey King never wavers in believing Mk can do the hero stuff despite the fact he’s fresh outta getting his powers stolen. 

And Mk forcibly takes them back, doesn’t give up and is able to lift the staff. 

After LBD Mk seems to be getting his powers back at a pretty decent rate. We see him steadily re-learn them and his self-confidence throughout the episodes, while Monkey King goes in a meditative state. (Maybe it makes the restoration go faster.) But even with that he still seems to be re-gaining them a little more slowly than Mk. Even when he goes to fight LBD, I’m not sure he has all of them back. Because I don’t think Monkey King could ever get possessed if he was at full strength—full self confidence. 

Throughout their little quest to get the Samadhi fire, Mk has his family supporting him, believing in him, and waiting for him to be ready to believe in himself again.

They build him up

And even Monkey King, once he relaxes seems to give him more feedback and input than before, taking time after seeing him do something to tell him he did a good job and he knew he could do it

In comparison to what this trip was like for Monkey King. Granted, he didn’t make it easy for the people around him due to his inability to communicate unless he’s being yelled at,

 but for the entirety of the trip it’s everyone but Mk is doubting him, doubting his plan, even being standoffish and accusatory at him. “SUN WUKONG YOU’LL DOOM US ALL.” yelled several times by several different people he seems to view as kinda-friends (though monkey king doesn’t seem to have friends). 

And it isn’t until after they see what could have been the results of his plan that Nezha, that they all kinda step back and go “oh. he might have been onto something here.” 

But by then it’s too late, and he believes they don’t have time, has just gotten yelled at harming the people he cares about which is literally like, his least favourite thing to do (literally goes and hides in a hole when he realizes he scares his FFM fam.) 

LBD kinda did to him what she did to Mk. And hey, I mean everyone else around him helped too. Monkey King went into that battle extremely low on self-confidence. Nothing went according to his plan, and now he’s falling back on the last resort that he did everything he could and even risked the world and the people around him to avoid. Mans does not want to kill anyone. Not even LBD and least of all a child. 

And it’s in that moment where his confidence is at it’s lowest and his self-hate is at it’s highest, that’s when LBD possesses him. 

Seems like she just got lucky and hit him while he was at his low point honestly rather than planned it, but she does seem to have a habit of destroying the people around her’s mental states *looks at Macaque*. 

He’s fighting the whole time but there’s no one there, he’s alone and trapped, but then there’s Mk in front of him, telling him to stop, 

that he believes in him, 

and he manages to stop the punch and bring it down to just a throw. 

And when he finally manages to break the possession, it’s the moment when Mk stands, knowing he’s coming in for the final blow and doesn’t even turn around or look away from LBD, so unshakeable in his confidence in Monkey King, and when Sun Wukong sees that,

  that is when he breaks free from the possession, the moment someone shows that unwavering unshakeable belief in him. 

“Thanks for not giving up on me, bud.” 

If he had given up on him, I don’t think Monkey King would have been able to break free. 

Anyway, there you go, there’s your Knox theory/analysis for the day.

i have thoughts about the pjo tv show but they might not be beloved... (long post, mostly just for myself but feel free to read my thoughts) (also lmk your thoughts! im curious if my experiences are universal) (also obv spoilers for ep8)

now i recognize i am watching this show through the lens of a much older person than i was when i read the books. percy is no longer older than me - he is now just a baby to me. and the actors are so young. so that might be the cause of some of my feelings. also i realize that a tv adaption is not going to be identical to the book. but what is tumblr if not a place to vent my frustrations, despite how irrational they may be?

i'll start with the good because there were some things i liked. i thought the actors mostly did a good job. the effects and sets and lighting and design was all very good, visually i think it was great. i like the gods i think theyre mostly well cast. I don't really have many problems with grover.

ok now lets talk about my frustrations. this isn't going to be super organized or logical. first of all, i had a problem with the characterization. most characters were actually not bad, but percy didn't really feel like percy to me. he seemed kinda darker? (whats he gonna be like when its dark!percy time??). like book percy obviously was not happy all the time, but he seemed light and he made jokes and he was a little goofier and i feel like in my mind he smiled more. tv percy kinda just seems sad all the time. and this might be a controversial take, but i feel like they gave some of percy's best traits to annabeth?? like annabeth was the one beefing with ares the most when he showed up. and a lot of the time she'd have a line that seemed so percy like!!! don't get me wrong - i love annabeth and the actress did a really great job! but i feel like she was kinda percy and annabeth at the same time in a way. i missed percy. also hades was different. they made hades fun which is cute but in the first book at least hes supposed to be kinda scary!!! i wasn't scared of hades at all. hades seems like he'd be a fun drinking buddy in this. those aren't the vibes hades should have, at least not at the first meeting.

ok next!!! where is the fun. pjo was such a fun series and i feel like the show has taken on more of a darker outlook! again i realize its a tv show and it was only an 8 ep run so they probably had time constraints, but i miss the fun little scenes that make the books such a fun read! like the "say hello to the poodle" scene ? or the scene where they're telling charon they died in a bathtub? and don't even get me started on the Crusty's bed scene. they just breezed right through that!!!

and thats another thing!!!! in the book they kept figuring things out while they were in the thick of it. which was fine!!! especially for percy - hes brand new to all of this, he has some knowledge but he makes mistakes because he's a kid and he is in a brand new world! and we get to see him and annabeth and grover get out of these tricky situations and figure things out!!! but in the show they know everything basically instantly. like the lotus casino or crustys scheme. i like seeing them make mistakes and fix it!! i don't think i was ever stressed watching this show (good stressed, like suspense stress) which i guess is in part because ive read the books but also because they were never in too terrible a position. and the kronos thing!!! percy knew right away. he was like oh word big pit? must be kronos. he did everything. like that is way too quick for early percy.

and then this is just me being nitpicky but i don't like how they changed things. like the luke betrayal reveal? where was the scorpion. that was so iconic and they just completely scrapped it! i thought it made luke's character kinda scary! like this guy fully just summoned a scorpion to kill percy. instead in the show hes like swinging at percy and percy manages to hurt him. i'm not scared of this luke. young percy, away from the sea, manages to hurt him? little annabeth scares him off? he runs away? ok big man try showing up again we won't be scared. idk it frustrates me.

one more thing before i wrap up the longest (and only) post i've made in ages. Sally Jackson using Medusa's head to turn gabe to stone was SO iconic. and what a great way for her to show us and the world and the gods how powerful she is. like she went from being sally jackson, mother and protector of percy (who was already pretty sick) to Sally Jackson, Capable of Basically Murder in a Super Cool Way!!!!!! i loved that. but in the show they just have gabe snooping and accidentally getting turned to stone? if i had never read the books and was watching this show with no knowledge of the books, i'd think it was just kinda a lazy way to wrap up a loose end. kinda felt like they took sally's power away (i know she divorced him but it doesn't really have the same gravitas).

ok i do have other thoughts but this is so long already and its bedtime. is it weird that i'm worried the younger cast might come across this? they probably won't care what i have to say but incase they do come across my super long post and read it (i would if i was 15 and starred in a show with a built in fanbase), i hope they take it with the biggest grain of salt. bc at the end of the day people like the show, its profitable (i assume), and i'm just a cranky old lady who doesn't like change. most of the changes i understand why they did it and i respect it. i'm just venting here. and you know what? if they release a second season (and third and fourth and fifth) i will be watching.

i guess i just wish they maybe had more episodes, or longer episodes, so they didn't have to rush it as much as (i felt) they did. overall it made people happy so who cares. have a good night tumblr.

ok, so i’ve thought somewhat about how much of existing kaeya’s lore hoyo would be retconning by making him not know he’s from abyss order bloodline and i think the most logical way i can reconcile all of the existing in game drops and the 3.5 dialogue is that kaeya knew he was from khaenriah, but was raised to believe Alberich clan are the regents of khaenriah, without being told of the abyss order connection. like i don’t think they’re retconning him knowing anything at all

bc like i can understand that things change in long-term projects, so if it was only the starting game lore, it’d be one thing. but hidden strife didn’t happen that long ago and based on the hidden strife alone kaeya’s dad called Alberich bloodline “regents of khaenriah” and casually referred to king Irmin, which implies Kaeya had at least basic grasp of khaenriah’s history and politics. this also tracks with his voice lines about Fischl and being descendant of lost royalty. so like, i believe he still Knows Shit and much more than he lets on, but maybe not very systematically.

but also now that I think about it, if I was dad!Alberich and i was preparing my son to plant him in Mond’s family, I would probs not tell him “hey sweetie, you and daddy are from the long proud line of the founders of the Evil Order. Yeah, you know, the Evil Order, which does Terrible Things, that’s us!” and instead present yourself as the noble regents, who picked up the pieces after royals fucked the country up, which like based on what we’ve seen of Chlothar, they’d probably sincerely see like this. this lets Alberichs to claim Khaenriah as both their legacy and responsibility, and it’s better to tell small kid he has a duty to his country, for which he is the last hope, instead of being like “cutiepie, one day when you grow up, you will be an important part of the Nefarious Crochet of Destiny, which our Evil Order has been planning for generations”

that would explain how he didn’t know about the abyss connection, but still picked up enough of lore and hints, which explains him referencing “sinners” in his voiceline about khaenriah frex. like after what we’ve learned in this archon quest, alberichs probably used “sinners” a lot in reference to themselves and khaenriah, so kaeya could catch a lot of religious shit and ideology, without knowing it’s connected to abyss order, bc like. this whole time we didn’t know shit fuck about sinner too! even Dain didn’t know about it and he was abyss sibling’s boyfriend. it’s a pretty well-hidden shit.

i remember you talking about some bls blowing up enough to leave the bl bubble (kinnporsche) and i kind of noticed bad buddy getting similar attention (eg reaction channels who usually only do western content checking it out) and i was wondering why you think bb in particular was able to do that. ik it was huge in bl fandom but (i guess at least for me) what made it stand out was the show calling past tropes out - which would obvs be lost on non-bl watchers. so.. what was the special sauce?

I'm not sure Bad Buddy was ultimately as successful as KP in this particular regard (reach). But I take your meeting so far as tendrils outside immediate fandom is concerned.

I think where Bad Buddy is actually weakest (as an ambassador) is where the narrative is overly BL trope reliant. Especially in the region of campy humor and the war between the friendship groups. There's certainly some supporting elements that are quite weak (narratively) and too scenery chewing for a western audience.

Which is not a critique of Bad Buddy, it's one of Thailand's best university BLs but it is very much still a BL.

I think, like 2gether it did particularly well in Japan, which is often Asian content's first target market outside of home country. And that's where the tropes and camp worked in its favor.

KP managed to jump the shark market-wise and geographically, because it jumped the shark BL-wise. It was so wild it became the Sharknado of all romance for a while. It became the Rocky Horror Picture Show of BL. It hit the gay camp vibe.

Ultimately, I don't think KP is the bellwether we should compare BB to. I think 2g is.

Sorry, I know a lot of people don't want to think about that show. But KP is an outlier. Which means the scion of BB is actually My School President. (GMMTV's #1 in views for 2023 by a landslide)

So the real question is (putting aside KP) what makes specifically these GMMTV shows so successful on YT, and in Thai BL's highest hitting export countries - Thailand+surrounding, Japan*, India, America (all of it - English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, & French speaking), and Europe - probably in about that order.

The answer?

They remain closely tied to Yaoi roots, especially with regards popular character archetypes

They apply classic BL tropes

In classic BL settings (high-school & uni, baby)

They have lightness and humor in them

They are of a higher quality of production than most other Thai BL

They are pretty

They are well-acted (by Japan's standards)

(Incidentally the wildly successful non-GMMTV Thai BLs also have many of these qualities + HIGH HEAT. Bed Friend, Why RU, TharnType)

* Before you ask, I am 90% sure we don't see Japanese subs on YT because those are territory restricted and sold into Japan for redistribution... they're like that there.

my couple of gripes are my feelings about UNIT as "uncomplicatedly good guys." I know there's a lot of different depictions of them throughout who (I've seen Two and Three + nu!who's depictions, and I prefer early seasons making it a more tempestuous relationship, especially with Three being sort of forced to work with them but really challenging their decisions and structures), but I watched the 50th anniversary the other day and that sees Kate Stewart almost blowing up London... once a military organisation, always a military organisation, and I'd like to see some future exploration of that. not that this episode was the episode to do so necessarily, but certainly in the future...

and the "male presenting" moment -- I see where it came from, it was the one misstep in threading trans/gender political and philosophical ideas into the text, had the vibes of "women and non-binary" type gendering, and makes you (me) go "what does male presenting mean? who is male presenting to you? do you mean man? do you mean "read as man"? are you talking about non-passing tans women, non-binary people with beards, trans men? and what does that have to do with your innate self?" it's some basic gender essentialism dressed up in progressive language. I'm going deep into this Moment, but it's also the only Moment, and I feel like it's interesting to hold it to a higher standard than I have previous Who. good intentions, this one is a miss

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

HMM! ok obviously there are a lot of opinions i disagree with but i feel like this fandom is so split i can't think of something that i think everyone's wrong about. so i'll just throw out of bunch of common fandom opinions i disagree with: palamedes got lyctorhood "right" (no such thing as getting lyctorhood right), camilla and palamedes are an example of a healthy or more equal necrocav dynamic (see prev), blood of eden are just as bad as the nine houses (CLEARLY not.), pash is a nepo child with no skills (come on), wake's a bad mom (i just think this whole line of discourse is so pointless you can't just reduce her character to good mom or bad mom and it's so annoying that people try), the nine houses have achieved gender equality (even beyond the necro/cav as gender binary stuff i just don't believe we have evidence for this particularly as it's a hereditary system that relies on reproduction). obviously i have beloved mutuals who agree with these points tho.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

ok i answered this in the last ask but i'll give you another answer: i don't understand why people like modern AUs. like, i do in theory in that i understand that people want the characters (griddlehark in particularly obv) to be able to exist in a space where they don't have the weird power imbalance and constant threat of/actual death (and they don't want to deal w the imperialism of it all), but i just think modern AUs take away so much of the stuff that makes the books interesting to me. it's so difficult to recreate the fucked up toxic vibes that so many of these characters' dynamics have if you just stick them in a university (god forbid.) and that's not to say you can't do it but so few people are interested in even trying.

18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on…

gideon the first. ok but actually i think the fandom should be doing SO much more with blood of eden, just in general. there are only THIRTY fics with we suffer on ao3 TOTAL. i want fics where she and aim and wake all have some insane situationship going on, on top of wake's secret affair with pyrrha and g1deon. i want 100x the number of gideon-growing-up-with-pash-in-BOE AUs. i want to explore their horrible leftist infighting SO badly. please can we do more with boe Please.
