Hobie is a culturally literate man, he absorbs history like a sponge, constantly learning and engaging with new material that intrigues him about things he already knows or new information brought to him, that being said I think that Hobie is extremely culturally intelligent ESPECIALLY as a black man, there is no room for arguments about colorism, or privilege around him, and he shuts down someone with vile opinions quickly.

“Mate you don’t really know what you’re talking about yeah?”

Hobie with an Afro Latine significant other is like having a living encyclopedia, he knows so much not just from what he’s read but lived experience with people in his communities.

If you’re estranged from your culture due to the diaspora and colonization Hobie make it his personal goal to help you build a found family with the Afro Latinxs in his punk circles, taking you to festivals and markets with them, they excitedly talk about their country specific dishes, who makes the better variants of food, linguistic similarities between each other, conversations about gender expression within each country and how indigenous beliefs shaped the land and it’s people even when colonization has deemed them eradicated and nonexistent.

You know how people say “Show me your friends and it’ll show me who you are”? Hobie is that kind of person, he holds his friends in high regard and holds them to standards he knows they are capable of, his Latino friends are amazing, they hold no judgement if you can’t speak Spanish, reminding you that the language was enforced on you all as a means of control and to diminish the histories of the indigenous tribes who lived in tandem with the earth, they are all gender diverse, all sorts of familial backgrounds. They sit and help you navigate your culture like a family would, and after a year of being with Hobie and adopted into his friend group, they are your family.

On certain weekends, even when Hobie is gone off being Spiderman, his friends crowd your space, or host in their own homes, spending all the light hours of the day prepping all sorts of dishes, and walking your through the preparation, the ingredients and the cooking, the place fills with laughter and chatter like a home filled with love and care.

Hobie is the kind of person who knows everyone, so don’t be shocked when you’re going about your day and by the time the evening hits your arms are filled with treats old women give you just because Hobie showed them a picture of you in passing and has been flooding them with all sorts of conversations about you, and like any good maternal figure that comes with all kinds of tasty snacks, elotes, small servings of baked chicken with rice and peas, fresh tortillas and empanadas, so much that when you do return home and Hobie sees the mountain of food you obtain all he can say is, “We better get to eatin’ huh? Can’t let ‘his all go to waste”

On one summer afternoon while downtown he sees another elderly woman he enjoys helping serving icees on the corner, he’s already scrounged up a few dollars to purchase, but she INSISTS on giving you both a large cup of lemon and mango icee just because Hobie had repaired helped repair her cart, and intimidate some cops who were pressing her about a ‘food license’ which makes a small child whine about how they wanted a cup that big, Hobie would kneel to the child and offer to buy them as many cones they want, even to their parents displeasure.

Culture has a symbiotic relationship to the land and it’s people, you can displace the people from the land but the culture doesn’t die, it simmers and brews in the belly of the people, forced to uproot themselves due to the violent nature of colonization and white supremacy, and Hobie helps you navigate these circumstances everyday like a lighthouse leads sailors through turbulent stormy waters.

Hobie shares with you information about the anti-colonial pro-indigenous movements in Latin America, reminding you that there are people fighting every day for reparations and liberation, when your blackness is seen as a contested subject amongst other Latinos especially those who are anti-black or colorist Hobie has no issue leaping up from his spot to go on the defensive.

“Black people exist everywhere bruv, that don’t make them any less Latine.”

He brings you all kinds of gifts, I like to think his favorite is jewelry, beaded ornamentation he acquired as payments for odd jobs and favors around the neighborhood, some of them are more alternative, and others are just crafts made with expert precision from their indigenous crafters, he even brings you to these shops so you can learn beadwork, or just to watch them work in a somber calmness.

As a Jamaican one of the things you two share in common is a taste for plantain, he buys plantain chips in bulk, but sometimes maybe after a day of spending time with Grandma Brown (who often complains about the youth losing touch with their roots) he’ll take you to the Caribbean market to buy sweet and ripe plantains, you spend all day frying them and eating them freshly hot and crunchy out the oil, until there isn’t much left after you’re done cooking.

On especially hard nights while you reminisce about family, Hobie will rest your head on his chest, stroking your head softly, conversing with you in hushed tones about how hard it is to be an immigrant, living in a diaspora and feeling disconnected from your traditions, or not feeling acclimated to your culture, he's quick to remind you about how you're living proof of your ancestors determination, that years of slavery and colonization couldn't keep you from being alive, that you existing is revolutionary enough, he traces your facial features, kissing your lips, your eyes your nose, reminding you that you're the product of their resilience.

My last headcanon is that Hobie goes only to queer people of color for tattoos and piercings, they are indigenous arts after all! He doesn’t get cultural tattoos but he loves showing off their work to other people of color, especially considering how white alt dominated body modification has become especially in the west. He pushes you to try and get some, he doesn’t press you to do anything you’re uncomfortable with but he does support you, and if getting a body modification can help you feel a bit closer to your roots, he’s your number 1 supporter.

When he’s Robin and upset, he talks in his born dialect,

but in an American accent...

Is an immigrant from Dominican Republic,

but immigrated when he was a baby

He only knew Spanish for the first few years of his life, until his mother died

His accent is also watered-down, but it's still strong to your genric American

It works when being questioned by the police,

just pretend you don't know english

As he got older and learned more english his accent basically went away (Still there, technology, just not as stronger)

Since he's from Gotham's streets, he has a heavy Jersey/Gotham accent (If you ever heard a jersey-ian (?) talk then you know what I'm talking about)

When he met Batman, he tried to play the "No Hablo inglés"

and Bruce pulls the uno reverse card and starts throwing spanish right back at him

When he teams up with Roy, Roy find him hot when he speaks spanish

He also teaches Lian spanish bc "I'm basically raising her too, Roy. That's my child as much as she is your's, and I'm teaching her spanish, danmmit"

Tim:

The only one withot an accent,

like he has a Gotham accent, but its posh Gotham (people with these accents are rich and think their shit dont stink)

Knows Korean and Yiddish fluently

Bc Tim is haft asian (I hc him as Korean and Jewish) and rich, ofc his parents had him learn a bunch of languages

Languages such as; Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Mandarin

One time the YJ (who didn't know his identity) ran into his civilian personal at a banquet and he had to speak Korean

Yj was on a mission, however, to watch over him (much to his displeasure) and he had to pretend to only speak Korean the whole night

When frustrated and/or in pain, he switches to one of the many languages he know

"What is your ethnicity? You're fluent in too many languages"

Damian:

Is actually an immigrant

(At least, I believe so...corrent me if im wrong)

His accent is the heaviest out of all of them bc he grew up in the middle east for a good chunk of his life

He hides it with posh European english (how he was taught english)

Knows a lot of languages bc Talia said knowing all of them is important

He doesn't know Cantonese, Portugese, or Hawaiian

Still getting use to speaking more in english and not Arabic

Still wasn't able to properly mask his accent yet as some words are weird to pronounce.

Cassandra:

Is taking speach therapy so she also doesn't really have an accent

She just speaks broken english bc she's getting used to talking

Talks very softly

Uses ASL mostly as it is an easier wa to communicate

Slowly gaining a Canadian accent bc her speech instructor is from Canada

he gets carsick. like bad bad. the first time moony took the marauders in a muggle car they had to stupefy him. no one brings up the "which is worse" debate: cars vs apparition in front of him or remus anymore because one mention and they're bickering for hours. its a touchy subject for them both.

he has a soft spot for late 60s soul music, a lot of the songs remind him of how he feels for regulus

he's the type to go to the farmers market and then feel bad that no one is at a stand so he buys two of whatever they're selling.. he comes home and reg is like ??? we already have a perfectly good cutting board but james is like i know baby, but i couldn’t just let the woman sit there! she was old and she looked sad :((( and she hand made them!!

he is a miserable wet noodle when he is sick. like a big baby. idk i just think effie would’ve tended to him so well, made him soup, brought him his medicine, water, potions, etc. anything he needed she would give him. so the first time he's sick at hogwarts and he has to get up and get his own medicine, he's acting like the world is ending.

summary : jason needed a drink of something strong and boy did he get something that intoxicated him.

authors note : this is my first story so bear w me. it was like so rushed because i just wanted it out of my drafts.

Jason wasn't much a smoker, the first time he tried a cigarette it left a chalky feeling in his throat. He didn't like it but it reminded him of the polluted air of Gotham while growing up. Maybe thats why he only did it when he was stressed, probably for comfort.

That same stress that tempted him, brought him here. In this average bar that was first to come into his sights after he changed from patrol.

Swirling the glass of gin tonic on ice, he held the cigarette between his lips. Jason often spaced out, when he was younger he often day dreamed. He was a really imaginative kid, it helped him block out the bad things in life. When his parents fought he imagined he was watching a tv commercial for couples therapy. Dissociation at its finest, it was a thing he relied on the most.

“Whats up with the sad eyes?” shoes clicked in-front of him as the sound of alcohol tips pouring into the mixer and the shaking of ice caused him to look up.

Bringing the dying cigarettes out of his mouth he pushed the bud down and shrugged.

“I live in Gotham, that should say alot for you.” Jasons eyes dragged onto every inch of the you analyzing you, a bad yet good paranoid habit he picked up from bruce.

He deducted that you were obviously latino, and honestly really nice on the eyes. Swallowing thickly his eyes flickered to the your hands working on what looked like a martini.

“True, this city is very hefty on the mind but it has its beauties! Like getting robbed, what else.” you chuckled after your sentence obviously finding yourself amusing.

“Jason.” gliding his finger across the glass he swallowed thickly.

Letting out a laugh, you couldn't help but shake your head in amusement, “you're like 8 feet tall basically, no way I could take you.”

Raising a brow at his tone, you shook your head,“I definitely could in that way bro.”

Laughs were shared between the two of you for the next two minutes whilst you were getting other peoples orders. Jason was a funny guy, not to mention good looking. If he was girl you would have most definitely asked him out on a date, but he was a guy.

• I know he's commonly written with blue eyes or black eyes but I'd say he has the deadest amber eyes ever.

• now going in detail on what his face looks like I'd say his face shape is like Chris Hemsworths, a couple of scars on his face including the healed smile scar he had since he was about 16, a slightly hooked grecian nose, thick eyebrows, and somewhat wide eyes, absolutely no facial hair, and thick, black hair that goes down just below his man tits.

• I wouldn't say he's the tallest crp as that award would go to Jack but he's pretty tall. Around 5'11.

the friend i always say i dont listen to because she's the problem. she's also the friend who terrorizes me with my ex friend's updates. i have realized she probably does this to make me miserable because she herself loves being miserable which is why she purposely stays at a job she hates and goes out of her way to keep tabs on her ex friends and people she hates. she likes being miserable and therefore wants me to be miserable so she's not miserable alone

i also mentioned her attitude is childish. i wont go into specific stories supporting this because im too lazy. but for example. this is the same girl i mentioned cant have a boyfriend because her requirement for a partner is be european and rich and has latino inferiority complex and puts white europeans on a pedastal. all of her attraction and crushes are so superficial. it's like you're talking to a 13 year old girl and she's telling you about her celebritiy crush. except it's not cute or amusing because she's a 27 year old woman.

So got curious and tried That 90s Show despite the shit reviews. I gotta give they nailed ‘90s’: Kitty’s decor, 70s holdover hair do, white trash moms, etc. the 4th of July was such a deal back then, i just figured it was rural not 90s.

Donkey Kong was a fail tho (graphics were 10 years too advanced). And i maintain (as i was in rural hell in the 90s) no small town in Wisconsin would have that much diversity then…or now. I mean its more likely now but unheard of back then (our shit town started gossiping about latinos coming to town, there were like 3 of them and they were all presumed Mexican but i dont think they were. Same with an asian family. No other poc dared fuck up to live there.)

And trust me: no kid would dare be openly gay in places like that back then (where i was living then regularly STILL steals pride flags and destroys them yes 2023. I was constantly assumed gay cuz no guys wanted me and i was lucky it was just being ostracized, not violence). The gay kid makes me think of Bobby Lee playing gay and its…odd. Like they just picked another ethnic kid to fey up and talk weird without being a full character.

I also wish they would’ve acknowledged Fez had been Laurie’s green card husband. Laurie should be features on Unsolved Mysteries. I cant believe parents (even ones thinking of her as evil) would just forget she existed or was missing.

And why did Fez go back to high voice? And why have they not explained wtf they’re still calling him Fez? Wilmer is creepy and looked high as a kite i dont really know why they brought him back.

Kitty and Red are delightful. Perfectly costumed and portrayed. Loved Leo! And Ashton and Mila seem to be having the time of their lives. Leia and Jay are perfectly cast as their parents kids. And if Gwen is one then her too.

Im sorry i dont believe a rrriot girl would go to a rave. There are a lot of plot holes. Frankly Nate and Gwen dont seem straigjy and Leia seems like shes way more into Gwen than Jay.

But Jay seems like a good character. Kelso is right he got his mom’s brains cuz Kelso was waaay too dumb. And they dealt with Jackie and Fez but not Fez and Laurie or even weirder Kelso’s other baby? I hate when these retcon shows just pick the most random shit to keep (like Conners kept Harris and Crystal’s kids but Andy and Jerry dont exist…maybe…jerry gets one shout out.)

OCTOBER IS A REALLY FUN NAME esp for a fallout protag given when the bombs dropepd hehehe. i have multiple specifically for fnv though depending on whichever run i do/use... i havent drawn any yet unfortuantely but i can break down their basic traits and stuff ^_^ jfc im putting these under acut because im babbling a lot here

INDEPENDENT RUN (i do this most often just naturally tbh): thimble, she/her, latino/native (in my head. fnv does only do latino. sniffles), usually primarily an agility + charisma build. shes usually a little wishy-washy/hard to count on given she gets so easily distracted by a million things but she does have a moral code she manages to stick to. usually has good or neutral karma - she does think the wasteland should belong to those who actually live there but also she steals like anything not nailed down too just out of habit so LOL. usual companions are cassidy + rex.

NCR RUN: carly, she/her, white, usually a perception + intelligence build. in my head her lore is that she wanted to be a doctor of some kind prior to the courier life but never found the means to do so, and now that shes here she wants to save as many lives as possible and feels the NCR is the way to do that even if its not exactly... agreeable... very much a sort of 'world is black and white' type of gal. usual companions are boone + ED-E.

LEGION RUN: i will disclaim with i hate legion runs the most aside from the fact that legion sucks they are just so fucking hard to do givwn you have to wait SO LONG before you can actually get into doing legion stuff in game. and it makes half the map hate you. SO i havent actually thought about this one too long since ive only run legon maybe twice... but so farrrrrr --- magnus, he/him, white, strength + perception build. of all my couriers this is the hardest hitter and alsousually the stupidest (or tied with thimble). i don't think he totally buys into legion's shit but he also knows ncr and house won't be able to maintain the entire wasteland here so. yknow. never occurrs to him that he can just go independent. usual companion is only ED-E, he doesnt see a point beyond it since he can handle anything that comes his way (in his head at least. lol)

HOUSE RUN: richard, he/him, black, intelligence + charisma build. think of every single smarmy businessman youve ever seen rolled into one. hes like if saul goodman from brba could wield a gun but worse because he really likes to show off about it all. house just makes the most sense to him since his mindset is just every man for himself, adn if you make it to the strip, you belong on the strip, and thus have earned it. fuck everything else! usual companions are veronica + rex. he thinks he can male manipulate veronica into letting him at the BOS bunkers supplies to sell for tons of caps </3.

anyway liek i said i havent drawn them ever because im just very lazy but they are fun to think about so maybe someday i will. sniffles

eren is german, carla is the german one, grisha has some german backgrounds, but carla is fluent in it— taught eren it, yada yada. however i must mention he’s a bit racially ambiguous thanks to user alert-arlert. that being said i think he needs to take an ancestry test because although it’ll come up as 90% european im dying to know what the 10% may be.... i can see him having north african roots thanks to user miekasa, as well as possible middle eastern or south american or hispanic roots too, that is carla’s doing.

Im sooooo sick of seeing shitty takes on Abuela honestly like where are people getting the idea her apology was a lie from? Just on a meta level that makes no sense, why would the emotional climax of the movie, where the emotions are let out and resolved, be a lie? 

And like I know it was a montage but the movie does show at the end the family being able to express themselves more freely and she has absolutely no issue with it? Her need for perfection stemmed from thinking it was the best for everyone and that she needed to keep her home intact but once she realized how much it hurt her family, she was willing to change. Because she cares about her family! and yeah, you can care about someone and still hurt them, but it’s so weird how people’s reactions to her trying to be better are “grrrr she can never be forgiven and the family should be mad!” when the movie shows none of them besides really Mirabel were continuously frustrated or mad at her, even after the house fell. Most of their issues were directed internally, after all. It would be weirder if they suddenly just became mad at her at the end (not to mention a latino family just throwing aside their matriarch they’re had led them for years makes even less sense aaaaand you can really tell most of the online fandom is white people)

Idk I’m just kind of sick of people seeing animated content for children and being like “they didn’t decide to stay angry at their toxic parental figures and instead decided to work on their relationship after the parent apologized and is sincerely trying to do better? what a horrible message!” and yeah some media will squander this message and the child is framed as the one who needs to reach out (think of the ending of Ladybird, which i watched recently), but here, Abuela is the one who approaches Mirabel to apologize. 

And look, I know what it’s like to have parents you’re conflicted about forgiving or keeping in your life, but sometimes media just isn’t applicable to your situation. Characters are meant to be relatable, yes, but they aren’t you.

racial diversity:

the main character, alex, and his sister june, are half mexican, and it is woven throughout the story in a very natural and believeable way that doesn't make it feel like it was added simply for diversity's sake. mcquiston is a white person (they/them pronouns) but the way that they wrote about alex and his family, especially with the entire family being in politics, is very believable, and in my personal opinion, very well done.

zhara, the deputy chief of staff for alex's mother, president claremont, is black, and her fiancé shaan srivastava (prince henry's equerry) is hindi. they are side characters so their backstories aren't delved into, but there aren't scenes where is feels like mcquiston was just trying to profit off of having diverse characcters and it felt more like she was just having her books reflect th natural diversity of the world, which i appreciate.

prince henry's best friend percy 'pez' okonjo is nigerian, and like zhara and shaan, his backstory isn't elaborated on, but again like the other two, it didn't seem like she was trying to profit off of the diversity, just trying to be accurate to real life. the main reason it doesn't feel like mcquiston was trying to profit off of diversity was because unlike the abyss surrounds us, she didn't put in small, unnecessary things about their ethnicity, but never elaborate on them and only put them in to get 'diversity points'.

another poc character is rafael luna, who is essentially alex's mentor in the books. he is gay and latino, similar to alex himself, and he helps alex navigate how to be a non-white, non-heterosexual politician.

alex and june's bestfriend (and alex's ex-girlfriend), nora holleran, is jewish, which is not elaborated on, but is a part of her character in a natural way.

overall i think that mcquiston did a stellar job of representing many diverse characters without it coming across as disrespectful, inaccurate, or only to check off the diversity box.

racial diversity rating: 10/10

lgbtq+ diversity:

this book is a gay romance, so obviously the lgbtq+ fiversity is up there. alex is bisexual, henry is gay, rafael luna is gay, nora is bisexual, and while there aren't any trans, ace/aro or poly etc, characters, i personally don't take many points off for that because mcquiston themself is a queer nonbinary person so i don't think it was meant as a slight to those communities.

two people mentioned that there actually was a trans character, a secret service agent that alex mentions during his sexuality crisis, so thanks to @r0ckwell and @releasing-my-insanity for letting me know!

also, the way they write about alex's bisexual crisis is not only so accurate and relateable, but also funny and sits with the book, as well as alex's character so well.

lgbtq+ rating: 10/10

plot:

in my personal (and Totally Unbiased Opinion) the plot of this book is amazing, there is just the right amount of angst and sadness to make it somewhat realistic, but it's also very witty and fun at the same time.

the only criticism of the plot i can think of is that it isn't 100% realistic, because it has a happy ending and in some ways unrealistic to how america and britain really are. but im not going to take points off for that, because i dont think that detracts from the plot, it's just a personal preference, and honestly i enjoyed it because i have enough of the horrid reality of america every day so escaism is fun!

plot rating: 10/10

characters/character development:

I think the character developement in this book is really god, the growth both henry and alex show throughout the book is astronomical, especially on alex's end, and the characters themselves are mulifaceted and entertaining, while also being realistic.

character rating: 100/10

readability:

fairly easy read, as long as you know basica gay history you'll get all the references, and if you don't get them, just look them up.

readability: 10/10

my personal opinion:

this is probably my favorite book of all time, and definitely my favorite lgbtq+ book of all time, that said, i tried to be as objective as possible throughout this, and i think i did passably well. but i really just love everything about this book. it checks all the boces for me, and it's very comforting to read, because queer people go through enough normally that we shouldn't have to only be able to read books that reflect the struggles we already face everyday.

all in all, this is mostly a happy, bute, fun queer romance that i would recommend to everyone, queer or not.
