The Reddit Blackout, #196, And Being New to Tumblr

okay i've seen a lot of people in the past ~24 hours or so confused by everything going on with Reddit & Tumblr from both sides - people new to tumblr who don't know how to use it, and tumblr users who don't know what's going on with reddit and why many of its users have joined up here i know this isn't really related to my blog but fun fact about me: i was up until recently a very active reddit user and even mod a subreddit, but I've also been on tumblr for about 3 years now on different accounts, so I think I can see pretty well from both sides of this and explain what's going on this post will be split in 2 sections: what happened with reddit (and what #196 means), and a guide for new users

1. What The Hell Is Going On With Reddit?

The thing that's caused all this ruckus is a major change to Reddit's API, which is what Reddit provides to people so they can pull directly from Reddit to make third-party apps or tools.

The change is that Reddit is changing its previously free API to be paid. Which on its own kinda sucks for developers, but it's not unexpected. They need to make money somehow, right?

The problem is that the API pricing is WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. The developer of the most popular 3rd party Reddit app, Apollo, says it will cost him $20 million a year to continue running the app as normal.

Essentially, this pricing forces almost everything third-party to shut down, which causes 3 major problems:

Third-party apps cannot keep running, which sucks for normal users because Reddit's official app is awful. It's slow, its video player is a thing of nightmares, it doesn't have many useful features third-party developers have made.

It sucks even more for visually impaired users because they can't use the official Reddit app at all. Reddit's official app does not work with iOS's native text-to-speech function. Third party apps, on the other hand, often do. So Reddit is forcing blind users away.

Third-party moderator tools cannot keep running, which sucks for moderators because many rely on these tools to properly moderate their subreddits. And moderators are often necessary, because without them subreddits get banned and hate speech and even CSA can often run rampant.

So you see why this change is bad.

Reddit users were PISSED.

So over the past week and a half or so, they have been working on organizing a site-wide blackout. The majority of the most active subreddits have now gone private. Some are only doing it for 48 hours, others (such as r/196) are doing it indefinitely.

That's why you can't access most of Reddit right now, and that's why many users have come here.

You're probably still wondering, though - what is this #196?

Well, as you may guess, it's connected to that subreddit r/196 I just mentioned. r/196 is a subreddit which only has one rule: every time you visit, you must post before you leave.

That's it, that's the subreddit.

The thing about r/196 that set it apart from most other subreddits - and what lends the subreddit's users perfectly to Tumblr - is that it was dominated by queer and leftist users.

So now they've come here and set up shop in #196 and r/196 so they can continue their merry little shitposting.

There's a ton of lore related to r/196, actually, but this is already a long tumblr post and quite frankly I cannot be bothered to write about it at the moment.

2. I'm Here From Reddit, What Now?

Hello there, random new user. As a double-citizen of Reddit and Tumblr, let me show you around this place.

First off, there are some other people who are better at explaining that I am who have made some really helpful things. Watch this Strange Aeons video as a guide to Tumblr culture and functionality and read this post which directly compares Reddit and Tumblr.

Assuming you've done that, here's some additional advice of my own:

Do you miss sorting subreddits by top of all time/the year/the month? Well, you can do something very similar with tags! If you go to a tag at the top of the screen you can select top, and then at the dropdown that says "all time" you can select different time periods! Even 6 months, which Reddit hasn't ever had.

Tumblr has a lot of cool customization features! Even outside your icon/banner/bio, you can change you blog colors and on desktop you can have an html theme (which has its own thriving community here). That customization is part of what sets Tumblr apart from everywhere else - I think you'll enjoy playing with it.

Notes will probably confuse you at first. Unlike the different numbers for upvotes and comments, notes combines the total number of likes, reblogs, and replies into the same number.

Outside of organizing your own blog, when making your own posts tags are what help other people find your post. Use them! But don't abuse them, because then people will just block you.

There are three ways of people finding your post: if someone follows you, if someone follows the tag(s) assigned to your post, and if someone is just scrolling through the tag(s) assigned to your post (and also the secret 4th way no one uses, which is finding it on the trending page, but even if people did use it no one will find your post initially that way)

tumblr is no longer The Discourse Website. And unlike what Reddit wants you to believe for some reason, it is very much alive still. Most of the people seeking fights have moved to Twitter (though some have also moved back here again). You will not get any brownie points for being a dipshit like you do on some subreddits.

So there, welcome to the hellsite (affectionate), you'll pick up on all the in-jokes eventually, for now just try not to be a nuisance and soon enough this'll be your new internet home.

im so glad you like them! i was wanting to do something like this for a long time so im happy its been so well received. ill go into how i picture them, but of course theyre based on your own preferences and tastes.

pre-apocalypse yan! zombie had unkempt, box dyed black hair that was usually up in a messy bun. ive mentioned they were a shut in degenerate, so to add to that, they had dark circles under their eyes from scrolling through subreddits you dont wanna know the names of and playing video games. their hygiene was really good though and i imagine they smell citrusy. pre-apocalypse! yan! zombie was soft. they never worked out, like ever, so they aren’t ripped at all. they have brown eyes and a tongue piercing, as well as snake bites in my mind; lots of baggy clothes, hoodies, sweatpants, and long sleeves too. overall, edgy lil dude that spends their time gaming and shitposting. definitely a reddit and discord mod.

after yan! zombie turns, i imagine that the virus turns your eyes milky and slowly rots your skin. by the time you found them, it had only been a week or so since their turn, but their flesh started to rot and have an odor, hence why i added the dialogue. in my mind they were bit on their thigh and hip, as well as their waist, the curve of their shoulder, and their forearms. when they got back to their apartment, they bandaged themself up and changed their clothes, but they were still bleeding— so i imagine they have bloodied bandages as well. i also like to imagine that the virus blows their pupils super big.

after their strain mutates again, i mentioned that their skin turns almost translucent and their rotting flesh and wounds mend, and that their veins turn an inky black. i also imagine that despite their soft tummy and thighs, they kinda turn rock hard. their eyes also take on a paler daffodil color in my mind too. if you’re wondering what their pheromones smell, it smells similar to monster energy — just because i can and they usually drank it when they wanted to stay up pre apocalypse.

oof well that is in fact a loaded question but I genuinely feel your frustration so let's give this a shot lmao

the short of it, to quote a friend of mine: 2012 tumblr called and wants its shitty shipping discourse back (derogatory)

the slightly longer of it.... to start this off, no one has to ship anything. no one's saying that anyone has to ship anything, or headcanon characters a certain way, or that you're not "allowed" to say that you don't ship certain ships. that's just . not a thing that's happening, and I do wanna reiterate strongly that you don't have to ship anything.

that said, well. maybe if you find yourself with the urge to nail your 'why i don't ship this canon interracial couple' against the proverbial church doors, you should ask yourself.... why is it always the black characters you find "badly written." why is it always the black and the white character who have "no chemistry." why is it always the black character you find unrelatable, that you think would be soo much better suited dating another character of color, etc. etc. These things do not happen in a vacuum, and you don't need to hate or even dislike that character to play into tropes, stereotypes, and issues that very many people have very extensively explained to be less than stellar, to put it mildly.

And Imma come out and say this: fandom is not activism, you don't need to be a loud, outspoken activist and/or turn this into anything more than a hobby. if, even amongst the discussions had in the last years, you have never once stopped to ask yourself how you might deal with the internalized racism that we're all dealing with, how it might affect people in the spaces you share while doing your hobby, then, frankly, you gotta do better. fandom is not activism, but we all have some basic responsibility of not causing more harm than there already is going around. this should not be a controversial statement either.

you can ship merthur without invalidating and trampling all over the frankly brilliant fact that this show went and casted a black woman as queen guinevere. you can ship merthur without taking away scenes that are not about them - god knows there are enough. you can acknowledge that 75% of your shipping takes are subjective, that merthur isn't, wasn't, and was never going to be canon, and literally none of this takes away from the two generic white dudes whose faces you'd like to smash together. this entire fandom is and has been majorly about those two generic white guys, for well over a decade, and i'm saying all this as a white merthur shipper. like, this is the bare minimum. and yet, here we fucking are.

as for the arthur being gay thing - again, you don't need to headcanon anyone a certain way, but whenever i do see this specific headcanon it "somehow" always comes with an incredibly weird (to put this mildly also) understanding of sexuality, top/bottom discourse, and - you guessed it - takes on arwen, that are maybe something people might want to uhh. examine also.

this isn't a callout, or a call for a witchhunt, or or or. personally i block and move on, and I wouldn't have said anything more on this than a vague shitpost on my sideblog, but god knows i can never shut up and even less so when asked, and I do think that while, again, fandom is not activism and I'll stand by this, people should... try and aim to make some basic attempts at not causing harm. it's not even hard (although that should not be your measure but like, again. bare minimum). it really is as easy as not constantly invalidating and side-lining ships and/or characters, by doing basic research in how not to whitewash characters, why not to compare skintone to food when writing, etc.

On that note, none of these are things that I've come up with. A lot of people, especially fans of colour, have done a great deal of work to provide resources and education that are... incredibly easy to find if you can be fucked to make some effort. Imma link a bunch beneath too but like. Yeah I guess that's my take. You can ship whatever you want, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart. But 1. maybe sometimes take some time to consider what you're saying, 2. maybe take some time to do some basic self-education on some issues in general, and 3. writing posts on why you don't ship whatever ship has never accomplished anything beyond getting people who agree with you to stroke your ego, and step on the toes of people who don't. at best.

It's my Ten Thousandth Post and I'm Talking about AASB

Could you expect anything less?

It's not any real milestone to hit but it does kind of...punctuate the amount of reading, writing, joking, shitposting, reblogging, etc. that I do. It's fun to be a part of an active fandom again, even with all of its ups and downs. I have TBT posts queued up for tomorrow while I'm in retail hell to celebrate friends, but for right now I want to talk about my story.

"Lol and remember when you said you were gonna finish SMVerse by the end of February Jo?" Shut up I'm still gonna try.

We're almost a year in. It's about halfway done, I'm in love with this dark prince I've made, I'm very happy with the personal growth I've done through all of it. I'm incredibly proud of it and the fact that I've yet to give up on it. (Me at AASB: Never gonna give you up. Cue a rickroll?) We're about to get into some really...plot dense and emotionally sticky territory. We're gonna hit the highest of highs and then the lowest of lows really fast in the next 2-3 chapters.

And somewhere between those two there's gonna be some monsterfucking and I'm so beyond ready to bring the handful of readers into the darkness that lurks in the corners of my brain.

TSAMS AUs and Designs masterpost

My Lord Eclipse AU, aka "Centiclipse" and "Sunvant"

This AU is, at its core, entirely self-indulgent. I like a character that is scary and tall and has a lot of arms and could kill me. So, naturally, I made Lord Eclipse a little freak and put him into a, like, 50-100 ft long centipede body.

There's no exact story line either, I have a very loose set-up and it can go in any direction at any time as long as I feel like it'd be cool! The only thing I can say for sure is that there is a slow, multi-year long process of Eclipse being loved by all his followers to Eclipse becoming such a shut-in that people doubt if he's even still alive.

It Runs Deeper, aka "no one dies and everyone gets better" AU

OKAY SO LIKE. I don't wanna say too much because this AU does, in fact, have a set story and HOPEFULLY will become a full fanfic someday, but the biggest detail rn is that the canon MOSTLY derails after Eclipse gets the star for the first time. There's changes before that too, since no one dies, but thats where it REALLY changes.

What I will ideally achieve with this story is that I splay every character's heart and soul and brain on the ground for everyone to see and they all have to confront hard and painful truths about themselves and the people around them. Whether they like it or not.

They are my beloveds and I think about them forever <3

Evil Lumini AU

Does this count? I want it to count. Evil Lunar AU except the astral bodies are accounted for and this leads to Lunara and Gemini having constant gayass fights because unfortunately that's the kinda dynamic I love.

He only has snapchat, he claims any other social media is for “boomers” (like okay nara spell the word boomer.)

They’re always selfies of you two, whether you realize he's taking the picture or not…

You could be asleep with drool all over your pillow or brushing your teeth with toothpaste hanging down your chin and he’ll still post it just to mess with you.

Nine times out of ten though, they’re really good pictures. Like…REALLY good. Nobody knows how he takes such good selfies. Not even him.

Danmaku Kagura, the unofficial Touhou gacha rhythm game which launched on 4 August 2021, is shutting down on 28 October 2022. While I ended up dropping the game relatively early on due to rhythm games not really holding my attention, plus gacha rhythm games in particular being kinda baffling to me (and it being too much effort to do the daily/weekly quests for their own sake, and not having even a token reason to want to collect characters), I recently went back to read/watch all the stories that I’d missed while I was away, or unlocked but not read. Thankfully the game makes it very easy and cheap to unlock past event stories with in-game currency. Aimless rambling below the cut.

I’ve heard more and less serious remarks about the full professional voice acting for every cutscene being one of the things that made the game overspend its budget, but it (together with the Live2D animation, even if simple) definitely does a lot to make even otherwise plain scenes a lot more entertaining. While there are voices I like or find more memorable than others (I seem to be especially biased in favor of deeper voices over higher ones), all the performances are pretty solid, even the choices I personally disagree with. Some events are a delight just due to certain characters’ voices. Being voice acted also forces the writing to be a lot more condensed and the stories shorter, which perhaps ironically works to its advantage compared to e.g. LostWord’s writing that often seems a bit bloated and long without actually much to say. Though I’ve gotten the impression that they only feel long to me because my Japanese reading isn’t as fluent as English, and/or because LW dialogue sometimes goes out of its way to be a bit difficult. (When I compare it unfavorably to LW here, note that I have been reading every LW story to date regardless.)

DK’s stories also aren’t bound by some of the repetitive formulas that LW’s stories kinda fall into. They’re cutscenes that you unlock by playing the game normally rather than pretending to have gameplay attached to them (which forces LW to e.g. make up excuses to fight waves of enemies every five minutes), have no costumes or new characters to sell in the story itself (which in LW’s case means most stories require a merchandisable theme), and again, are incentivized to focus on a smallish cast in each story and keep it condensed rather than stretch it out with cheap padding.

The “main” story of DK, or at least how I remember it, is an uninteresting and stylistically out-of-place attempt at an adventure plot with some high concepts it doesn’t really commit to, but the ~15 “location” storylines and especially the ~35 event storylines (totaling about 330 cutscenes, before even getting into all the short “character” scenes) have a lot of room for variety. Some are just game retellings with a twist (at least there’s always a twist), some rather generic or otherwise unmemorable, some pretty standard slice-of-life, or alternatively very out-there stories that I can affectionately call fan shitpost plots. Most have tones and structures reminiscent of “Saturday morning cartoons” as they say, but that’s actually a very broad range. That still leaves many that have interesting concepts, are actually fun comedies, or to the contrary, dare to actually be serious in a way I’m pretty sure not a single LW event story or even Cannonball ever did. (LW only has two modes: completely goofy romps for its event stories, weirdly high-concept and pseudo-serious for everything else these days.)

This isn’t really going anywhere in particular. It might also be silly to say that I’m going to miss DK for its stories when it’s been a long time since I actually “played” the game. But whether or not it actually contributed to their business being unsustainable, I have to be kinda glad that they decided to spring for the full voice acting, to make the stories really stand out and have a longer shelf-life even where they otherwise wouldn’t. I guess it’s a bit like how the fandom has to fixate on whatever voice acted fan animes it gets, even when they’re otherwise not so great.

I’ve found at least one YouTube account that has a full collection of every story in Danmaku Kagura, for however long it stays up. It’s not a bad idea to check out if you want to read some of the stories (in Japanese), or just hear the voice acting. As a particular favorite in recent memory, here’s a silly one focused on the Animal Realm cast doing some petty villainy. Saki and Yachie’s voices are both favorites of mine.

Had a brain aneurism a while ago, and I should me doing my homework, but my blog needs some water so I'm gonna drench it in the ocean Venti my beloved. I had a thought about my favorite Archon He gets drunk whenever they have church services at the cathedral so he doesn't have to suffer and cringe through praise tht he thinks he doesn't deserve which leads to...shenanigans imagine the local bard, drunk as fuck, waltzing into your church, sitting at the extreme back of the church, and just sobbing. Pathetic wet sobbing and crying but its so damn quiet you wouldn't hear it unless you go really close up, therefore not disturbing anyone. And then he leaves before the service is over and goes back to drinking through his sorrows Another thing He used to travel to Liyue to either a) have a nice chat with Liyue's biggest brick wall (Zhongli), or b) to cause disturbance to the peace by either being annoying or being drunk, or c) both I mean, he still does, but its only to say hi to Zhongli every once in a while (and for events ofc) He and Zhongli would bicker over the stupidest things back in their prime days, one such thing about what type of wine tastes best. Venti, biggest stick in Zhongli's ass: *drunk rambling on why a specific wine is better than another wine* Zhongli, tired of the stick that's in his ass: Barbatos shut the fuck up you annoying slut or I will fucking throw Narukami Island on you- Guizhong: Do we interfere or- Cloud Retainer: No no, lets see what happens (He indeed, did not throw Narukami island at him. But he did 'accidentally' spill jam on his clothes...which was indeed a horrible idea because having to restrain one of the literal thousand winds was not something Cloud Retainer and Guizhong thought was possible)
