News Writing: The Fusion of Journalism
The Art of News Writing: Crafting Stories with Impact
News writing is the cornerstone of journalism, a dynamic field that plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, informing society, and holding institutions accountable. It is the art of presenting factual information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. In this article, we'll delve into the world of news writing, exploring its key elements, writing techniques, and its enduring importance in today's fast-paced information age.
The Key Elements of News Writing
1. The 5 Ws and H News writing is built on the foundation of answering the essential questions: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How. These elements provide a comprehensive overview of the story, ensuring that readers gain a thorough understanding of the topic. 2. The Inverted Pyramid The inverted pyramid is a fundamental structure in news writing. It places the most important information at the beginning of the story and gradually leads to less crucial details. This format allows readers to grasp the core of the news even if they only read the first few paragraphs. 3. Objectivity and Balance News writers strive for objectivity and balance. They present facts and perspectives without bias, allowing readers to form their own opinions. Objectivity is a cornerstone of trustworthy journalism. 4. Attribution Citing sources and attributing information is crucial in news writing. It enhances credibility and transparency. Readers should know where the information is coming from. 5. Clarity and Conciseness News writing aims for clarity and conciseness. It is about conveying information in a straightforward manner without unnecessary jargon or wordiness. Each word should serve a purpose.
Writing Techniques in News Writing
1. The Lead The lead, or the opening sentence of a news story, is critical. It should encapsulate the essence of the news and grab the reader's attention. A strong lead is often the difference between a reader continuing to the rest of the story or moving on. 2. Direct Quotes Direct quotes from key figures involved in the news story add authenticity and relevance. They allow readers to hear directly from the sources and form their judgments. 3. The Nut Graf The nut graf, or the paragraph that follows the lead, provides context and outlines the significance of the story. It answers the "So what?" question, explaining why the news matters. 4. Transitions Smooth transitions between paragraphs and ideas are crucial for readability. They guide the reader through the story and maintain coherence. 5. Active Voice News writing typically employs the active voice to convey information directly and efficiently. It emphasizes who is taking action, making the story more engaging.
The Enduring Importance of News Writing
In today's digital age, news writing has not lost its relevance; instead, it has evolved. The dissemination of news has shifted from traditional print media to online platforms and social media. News writers adapt to new formats, engage with multimedia elements, and reach global audiences in real time. News writing remains essential for several reasons: - Accountability: Journalists uncover and report on events and issues, holding individuals, organizations, and governments accountable for their actions. - Information Dissemination: News provides the public with timely, relevant, and factual information that aids in decision-making and understanding the world. - Public Discourse: News stories often initiate public discourse and debates, shaping public opinion and influencing policy. - Verification of Facts: In an age of misinformation, news organizations play a vital role in fact-checking and providing credible information. - Storytelling: Effective news writing is a form of storytelling. It engages readers emotionally, making it a powerful medium for conveying complex issues and human experiences. In a rapidly changing media landscape, news writing continues to evolve, but its core mission remains constant: to inform, educate, and empower the public. It is a testament to the enduring importance of journalism and its capacity to adapt to the needs of society.

My thoughts on the current media landscape…
I was part of our campus publication when I was in high school. My forte was news writing and I joined numerous press conferences. From then on, I wanted to pursue Journalism but that changed when one day, I saw that the newspaper we worked hard for was being thrown in the trash bin by some students. Of course, I approached them and asked the reason why they were just throwing the campus' paper. "Reading is boring and my bag is too small for me to carry this newspaper. I'd rather browse through twitter", is what they said. On that moment, I was discouraged to continue news writing. I thought that I would not be able to find a good-paying job in this field since people prefers social media over the traditional news paper for getting news and updates.
Tumblr media
Several years passed, the traditional media such as newspaper and radio broadcasting are now slowly being replaced by social media platforms such as Facebook and Tiktok. I have now realized what those students mean back then when they said that they preferred Twitter since the news and updates can already easily be accessed through your phone and there's no need to buy newspaper or stay tuned in the radio just to hear the recent news and updates of the country. You can check it anytime and anywhere. I am also now a fan of the new media. However, a few hours ago, while I was scrolling in my Facebook newsfeed, I saw a post where in it says to view their "My Day" as they have some good news. Being the curious person that I am, I clicked and a very disturbing content flashed through my screen. It was porn. These posts are trending right now and Facebook still hasn't filtered these out. I can't believe there is such a thing on a famous platform where all ages can freely explore!
Tumblr media
This is the scary thing about the new media we have now. There is no way to filter everything immediately whether it is fake news or pornography. As we transition to the digital world where almost everything can already be done online through your phone, everybody has access to these social media platforms including innocent children that may be exposed to dangerous content and this sometimes goes undetected by their parents. These instances make me miss the times where people choose traditional media. Unlike the pages that are providing fake news, traditional media such as newspaper has a lot to go through in order to make sure that there are no errors and inaccuracy in the article through the use of proofreading and copywriting. I believe that new media still cannot beat traditional media in terms of accuracy and inclusivity as not everybody has phones or knows how to use phones and not everyone is aware of how to distinguish fake and factual content.

DICNHS Bags Total Championship in DSPC, Campus Scribes to Advance in RSPC
Marking the future of journalism inside the division, Digos City National High School’s (DiCNHS) The Pioneer earns the overall championship in the English category of Digos Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC),  with campus journalists advancing to the Regional School Press Conference (RSPC).
All individual writers of The Pioneer are set to advance to the RSPC. Two of TV broadcasting’s news anchors and a technical director saved their spot in the regional competition. An anchor from the radio broadcasting team clinches his shot in the contest.
“I and The Pioneer aim past our limits. The recognition that The Pioneer gained this DSPC brought pride and honor to Digos City National High School. Moreover, it inspired the campus journalists to reach for more. The awards the Pioneer attained not only symbolized the hard work and dedication of the publication but also signified the future of journalism inside the campus,” stated Maria Margarette Saban, RSPC qualifier, first place Copy Reading and Headline Writing (CRHW).
The Pioneer’s individual category writers will advance in the RSPC with CRHW first placer Maria Margarette D. Saban; Editorial Writing first placer Van Anjela Granada; News Writing first placer Jemimah Agnes R. Avila; Feature Writing third placer Christelle A. Degamo; Sports Writing second placer Fatima Yashmin O. Jaitoni; Sci-tech Writing first placer Rj Justine Bugador; Editorial Cartooning fourth placer Zeth Ioan Magdayao; Photojournalism first placer Xaella Dyla R. Adeva; and Column Writing first placer Chester Lance O. Sucna-an.
“The Pioneer's awards bring joy and pride to the school as they showcase the talents and abilities that both the coaches and students possess,” said Van Anjela Granada, first-place winner of Editorial writing.
The Pioneer’s TV broadcasting team’s anchors Elijah Raphael Alvarado and Jans Alyssa Jumawan will forward to the RSPC with their best anchor win. Technical director Karl Nicoli Pelletero will move on to the RSPC backed by his second place wins in both Best in Technical Director and Best in Technical Application. The TV broadcasting also bagged special awards, winning second in Best Developmental Communication by Leigh Marvin Emphasis adding to the group’s second-place wins in both Best Script and Best Graphics.
“It felt unreal. Unreal, in the best way possible. We faced major complications during our simulation, and I was a first-timer, so the sheer idea of winning an award was alien to me. Despite our difficulties, I'm glad that we pushed ourselves, even if to others it had already seemed that we had reached our limit,” declared Jans Alyssa Jumawan, RSPC qualifier, and best anchor in TV broadcasting.
Radio broadcasting’s 1st place Best Anchor Winner, Kurt Achelis Declaro will move up to RSPC. The radio broadcasting team also won first place in both Best Production and Best Script, Technical Director Haven Jozel De Leon won second place in Best Technical Director, meanwhile Mary Sarachelle Agar won third place in Best Infomercial.
“The Pioneer won as the champion during the 2024 DSPC. This wouldn't be possible without our coaches, who gave us their never-ending support. Such an award brought pride to the school and showcased that the students of Digos City National High School are skilled,” stated Rj Justine Bugador, first-place winner of Sci-tech writing.
The DSPC winners will be forwarded to the RSPC. The RSPC will be hosted by 2 different divisions. Group category’s RSPC will be held in PTV Davao del Norte Station and Bulwagan ng Karunungan, and in DavNor Gymnasium, Davao del Norte and Tourism Complex on March 11-13, 2024 hosted by Davao del Norte Division.  The individual contests will be held in Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School on March 19-22, 2024 hosted by the Davao de Oro division.

Grade 11 Reaps The Crown
Grade 11 students Gretchelene J. Abad and Denriel Arthur D. Fernandez wrapped up the titles for Mr. and Ms. Intramural 2023 at Digos City National High School on January 27 at 1:00 p.m.
The contest was held at the school-covered court and was hosted by Mr. Vincent Altagonde and Ms. Shane Jumaw-as.
“Confidence isn’t walking into a room thinking that you’re better than anyone else. It’s walking in and not having to compare yourself to others” said Mr. Intramural Denriel Arthur D. Fernandez in the Question and Answer portion.
Fernandez concludes that confidence comes from within and not having to compare yourself to others.
“A part of the fact that intramural is being held to show sports and arts, I believe in incorporating pageant at this event is to not only show the ability, talent, and sportsmanship of an individual but also show the capacity of being a spokesperson to the youth” stressed by Ms. Intramural Gretchelene J. Abad on the Question and Answer portion of the pageant.
In the authority of Abad, she reckons that pageants give candidates a voice to represent individuals and represent not just a specific group but the whole youth.
“I will not change a single thing about myself or my life. I am here in this stage before you because of my wins as well as my losses. I believe that these limitations and weaknesses grant me an opportunity for me to learn, and to create a path for myself’’ expressed Princess Diana D. Griffin, grade 10 STE student — the 1st runner up of Ms. Intramural on the Question and Answer portion of the pageant.
As stated by Griffin, she will not change a single thing about herself or her life. She gives credence to her limitations and weaknesses making her stronger and smarter in every step she takes and in every obstacle she conquers.
“A trait that Mr. Intramural should possess is confidence because without confidence we will not be here right now, and with confidence, nothing is impossible” voiced Arger T. Morano, grade 7 student — the 1st runner-up of Mr. Intramural on the Question and Answer portion of the pageant.
As claimed by Morano, with confidence he can answer questions with a smile and makes everything possible.
“Thank you to all of the supporters for believing in me and helping me achieve this incredible honor” stated Mr. Intramural Denriel Arthur D. Fernandez.
As per Fernandez, he is humbled and grateful to have won the pageant and wouldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of his supporters, teachers, and coaches.
The pageant started at 1:00 p.m. and ended at 5:30 p.m. which consisted of 3 categories: Activewear, casual wear, and formal wear. With senior high school candidates sweeping the Mr. And Ms. Intramural title.

ok I know it’s just because they need to get Katherine’s desk and chair on stage in a way that makes sense but like,,, that fact that it’s being pushed on by newsies because even though she is helping them she is also actively exploiting them to further her career and without their struggling she wouldn’t have her status in society or this opportunity to prove herself in the newswriting world.

happy three months from moni!
10 works posted, 1 fanfic series, a bajillion wips, and 129.8k words written ❤️‍🩹 it’s been more than three months since i started posting my fics, and i’m eternally grateful for all the love and support you guys have showered my works with.
over these months, i’ve definitely grown as a creative writer. i started off with only a good grasp of academic and newswriting, and had to figure out how to write these fics with all these ideas in my head. and when i decided to finally give it a shot and post my works, i haven’t stopped writing fics :’)
it’s crazy to say that my love for writing continues to grow, especially in a course that deals with a lot of academic papers and being part of my uni’s publication. but the only reason why this love continues to grow is because of your support. i love my ideas and i want to share them to the world, and i’m glad you indulged in these silly works of mine. they’ll never be perfect, but that’s what pushes me to continue.
once again, thank you so much for all the support you have given me!!! reblog or not, i still see the likes, along with the asks and feedback in my inbox. i still encourage you guys to reblog the works you read because it makes a difference <3 love you all!
