The Robin to My Batman (Neil Lewis/Fem!OC)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Neil Lewis/Fem!OC
Summary: A comic book store opens up next to Gumshoe Video prompting a hot and heavy feud between the two businesses and their nerdy owners.
Theme: Romance - Enemies to Lovers
Warnings: Nerds being nerds, smut
The early morning walks to open Gumshoe Video are always enjoyable for Neil. He loves getting coffee from that family owned Armenian coffee shop down the street, greeting the old man who owns the hardware store across the street, and contemplating what the day’s theme should be.
However, his gorgeous, peaceful morning comes to a screeching halt as he spots a large moving truck parked in front of Gumshoe— no, parked in front of the vacant store to the left of his. He quickly darts into the alleyway across the street and watches with mounting horror as some—so far unrecognizable—new business moves in.
“No no no no no,” Neil mutters to himself, already picturing the worst case scenario. What if it’s a competing video store? Or perhaps on of those Christian shops that sells over priced bible themed tchotchkes? Both are miserable possibilities and he has no idea what he’ll do if either of those ends up being the case.
When the coast is clear of movers, Neil goes sprinting into his store and making a made dash for the phone to call his friends.
He has a bad feeling about this.
The first time he sees her is at the grand opening of Golden Age Comics, the new comic book store next door. The first thing he sees when he walks in isn’t the life sized cutouts of various comic book characters placed strategically about nor the wall display of rare figurines.
No, the first thing he sees is her, Bailey Taylor, the owner of the shop. She’s dressed like Wonder Woman, displaying these long shapely legs that have Neil’s jaw going slack in awe. She flutters about the store, greeting customers and advertising the big grand opening sale she’s running.
Johnathan and Lucien, who came into the store with him, start needling each other excitedly, muttering about how hot she is and Neil can only feel dread. This can only spell bad news, he just knows it.
Not at all like a coward, he quickly flees the store before she can approach him.
The first time he actually meets Bailey, she comes into his shop. Today Gumshoe is having a deal on westerns and so Neil is dressed accordingly as a cowboy. When she walks into his store, it creates a rather comical juxtaposition as it appears her own store is having a sale on Japanese manga.
Sailor Moon Bailey and Cowboy Neil stare each other down.
“Um, hi,” she greets with an awkward little wave, her smile bright despite the uncomfortable mood, “I own the comic book store next door. My name is Bailey.”
Neil nods stiffly, doing everything in his power to not stare at how hot she looks in that cosplay. When Neil fails to respond, an irritatingly adorable frown mars her features
“Okay,” she mutters to herself before saying, “Well, I just wanted to see if you’d be willing to do a team-up and have a collaborative sale.”
Neil scoffs, “And what? Hock old Adam West Batman tapes?”
She perks up and nods enthusiastically, “Yes! Exactly! I actually have this really great id-.”
Neil shudders at the thought and cuts her off before she can get going, “The old Batman show is absolute garbage in its cinematic delivery— no way would I subject my customers to that.”
The glare she gives him could cut steel and admittedly makes his happy bits stir in interest.
“Garbage?” She snarls, “That show was a pioneer for superhero media! Just because some over hyped alcoholic wife beater didn’t direct it, doesn’t mean it’s not good!”
Neil’s eyes narrow at her and he crosses his arms, trying to appear more authoritative than he usually looks, “Oh believe me, the director has nothing to do with the bad editing and poor visual shots!”
The woman looks like she’s visibly holding herself back from launching herself over the counter and decking Neil in the face. His cock makes another inappropriate twitch at the thought and he internally scolds himself for these reactions.
Without another word, Bailey storms out of the store and stomps her way back to her own shop and Neil breathes a sigh of relief.
God, he really needs to get laid if some uneducated comic dork is getting him riled up.
After that disastrous first encounter, a Cold War of sorts settles over the two businesses. If Neil is having a sale, Bailey will have a better one. If Neil does a midnight showing of a movie, Bailey hosts a free-to-join D&D party. If Neil dressed up, Bailey does too but does it better.
It’s aggravating.
Neil doesn’t even know what it is about her that has him going absolutely insane, but it’s beginning to be a problem. For instance, last week she dressed up like Cat Woman and strutted about both in and out of her store, placing herself in full view of Neil boredly manning the register of his own shop. He had to go and jerk off in his office like five times; and he was still horny afterwards!
Like he said— problem.
And it’s only getting worse.
“Dude, oh my god! She’s dressed like a school girl today!” Johnathan says while rushing into the shop, a lecherous grin on his face, “Her skirt is so short!”
Lucien cheers and Neil rams his head onto the surface of the checkout counter repeatedly.
He’s gonna die horny and infuriated by her subpar taste in cinema, it’s inevitable.
Lucien just gives him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder and leaves him to his melancholy while he and Johnathan go next door.
“Ugh what do I do?!” He laments pathetically to himself.
The second interaction that Neil has with Bailey happens on a slow night for both businesses.
Neil is parked on the shop couch, watching Lady in the Lake and barely staying awake when she comes into his shop. She’s dressed normal today in a worn Captain Marvel t-shirt and denim shorts and he’s a little too tired to properly hide the slow up and down he gives her.
A little blush settles on her face when she catches him doing that.
“Slow night?” She asks after clearing her throat awkwardly.
“Yeah, you?”
Bailey blows a raspberry and nods, walking over to the couch and throwing herself down onto it next to Neil. He quickly scoots over, giving her room while trying to smooth his shirt and hair down to look less like a mess.
“What are we watching?” She asks.
Things sort of devolve from there. Whether it was one innocent comment taken the wrong way, or an intentional dig, it prompts a fresh new screaming match between the two of them over the cinematic quality of the Adam West Batman series. This woman will not let go of that trash TV series, Neil realizes.
Bailey gets up from the couch at some point, Neil hot on her heels as they move their heated argument about the store. It’s when they’re next to the wall that Neil pushes her against the surface and pins her arms high above her. He’s not thinking when he kisses her, pushing his tongue into her mouth to taste her— he’s running purely on adrenaline and instinct.
That first kiss they share is not a gentle one; it’s rough and filthy and hot.
“You are such a brat,” Neil bites out scathingly, his hands slipping away from her wrists to start running over her chest, cupping those perky tits of hers in his hands.
“You are an obnoxious tool!” She sneers in return, her now free hands making quick work of his belt buckle and the button on his jeans.
“I can’t believe how terrible your taste is in cinema! A rock would have better opinions!” Neil helps her push his pants down and then reaches forward to yank her shirt off. The bra she’s wearing is just a simple navy colored one but it has him physically biting back a moan at the sight.
She smirks up at him, then pushes him away with a rough shove, sending him into one of the shelves. She gets into his space, wrapping her arms around his neck and initiating another one of those blood racing kisses.
He reaches down and grabs her under her thighs, hoisting her up to wrap her legs around his waist. He starts walking them back towards his office, fully intent on throwing her down onto his couch in there and getting all this frustration out of his system.
Sex has always been pretty gentle and by-the-book for Neil, he’s never had a desire to be rough or for a partner to be rough with him, but Bailey makes his head fuzzy. She makes him want to do things he’s never done before.
“Fuck— Neil!” She gasps when he puts her down and immediately sticks his hand down the front of her shorts and starts rubbing along her slit. It’s so wet and he groans, his cock twitching in anticipation.
“Can’t wait to shut you up,” he tells her, his long fingers alternating between rubbing vicious circles on her clit and slipping down to enter her with harsh thrusts, “Been thinking about this for weeks.”
Her fingers scratch lightly across his stomach as she pushes his shirt up, “Well, you’re going to have to do lot better than this to make that happen.”
His eyes narrow and he pulls his hand out of her shorts, ripping the button open and yanking them down her legs. He grips her around her hips and flips her onto her stomach, climbing onto her legs to keep her from kicking about.
“I am so sick of that smart mouth,” he tells her before laying a loud slap to her right ass cheek, making her cry out in surprise that dissolves into a moan. He would spank her in earnest, but he’s been so fucking horny for so long that he only gives her a few smacks before slipping his fingers up under the edge of her panties, rubbing the buttery soft skin of her ass.
Trailing his hands up, he unhooks her bra and climbs off of her so that she can turn over onto her back. She’s quick to shuck off her bra and panties, exposing herself entirely to his hungry gaze.
“You said you thought about this for weeks,” she remarks while slipping her fingers down to her folds, “How many times did you jerk off to me?”
He groans and goes down to his knees, leaning forward and shouldering his way between her thighs.
“So many fucking times,” he admits shamelessly before licking into her with enthusiasm.
Her fingers thread through his hair, tugging him forward and using the leverage to grind against his face. He could die here, smothered between those shapely thighs, and it would be in total bliss. Her moans are the sweetest thing he’s ever heard and he endeavors to hear them get louder.
“Are you gonna cum for me, baby?” He asks, his fingers returning their journey of entering her and his eyes watching with hooded rapture as her cunt sucks them into her.
“Neil,” she gasps his name, chanting it like a prayer and he picks up the pace with his fingers. He sucks on that hard little bud of hers and feels her cum around his fingers, that soaking cavern gripping him tightly.
“Fuck, baby,” he groans, “please let me fuck you.”
Her thighs are shaking as she comes down from her orgasm high, “Yes, fuck yes.”
He doesn’t need any more encouragement— he’s barely got his underwear down before he’s pushing into her. She’s tighter and wetter than any other pussy he’s been in and he tells her as much, rasping filthy things into her ear as he begins a brutal and unrelenting rhythm.
“Thought about bending you over the front counter and fucking you stupid so many times.”
Her nails dig into his back, raking along the surface and certainly leaving their mark.
The thought alone of her marking him could make him cum. He bites his lip harshly to try and wrestle back some control, unwilling to see it end so soon.
It barely works as his hips stutter in their thrusting.
“Can I cum in you?” He asks— no, practically begs her.
Her arms snake around his shoulders, tugging his head forward to rest against hers, their mouths finding each other hungrily. Between filthy, tongue filled kisses, she gasps, “Please!”
Permission granted, he buries himself as deep as possible inside of her, the head of his cock nudging her cervix, and he cums. He groans loud and long as those warm, wet walls squeeze every last drop from his cock, sucking it better than any blow job could manage.
He pulls out of her slowly and almost reluctantly, sad to part from that perfect cunt of hers. A flow of white cum follows his departure, dripping from her opening and over her ass in thick globs.
He’s never seen something so sexy in his life and he doesn’t know what he’ll do if he doesn’t get to see it again.
Stepping back from Bailey, he grabs his shirt off the floor and uses it to wipe her clean, chuckling at the deadpan look she gives him for the effort. Tossing the shirt aside, he climbs onto the couch and lays himself out next to her, pulling her to rest against his chest.
They lay like that for a long time, catching their breaths and basking in the after glow.
“You don’t really hate the Adam West Batman series, do you?” Bailey asks, her eyes looking up at Neil imploringly.
Neil about answers the way he normally would but when he looks down at her and sees the earnest expression she’s wearing, he doesn’t have it in him to be an asshole.
“No, it’s not that bad,” he lies and feels his heart flutter when she shoots him a beaming smile in return.
He thinks he can stand mediocre cinema for her sake.

December 2023
I decided to make a list of every fic I read each month.
I would like to interact more, but life has been complicated recently and when it comes to interacting, I get very anxious which is something I'm trying to overcome.
So, here I made this to appreciate such amazing writers and stories that inspire me and others everyday. To the authors, I want to thank them for their dedication and time spent on writing to offer us fascinating stories.
I totally recommend their work.
(If you are in this list and you don't want to, please let me know so I can fix it).

[ masterlist ] [ win lewis bio]
Tumblr media
It had felt like hours since Win had given up on trying to keep her mind occupied and away from thoughts of Billy and the date he’d boasted of having that night, instead giving into sleep despite the early hour.  Though she’d tossed and turned at first, she’d finally slipped into a semblance of slumber when a frantic pounding at the front door roused her like a shot, her heart leaping into her throat at the urgent racket.
Nearly falling out of bed, she scrambled up, grabbing her robe on the way to the door.  Switching on the kitchen light, she unbolted the lock and yanked the door open, not ready for the sight that awaited her.
His fist raised, poised to knock again, was none other than the man she couldn’t get off her mind.
Billy Hargrove.
As soon as he saw her, he dropped his arm and looked over his shoulder anxiously, shifting his weight from foot to foot as if ready to make a break for it.
“Billy, what–?” Win began, her indignant exclamation catching in her throat as she got a better look at him.
He looked like he’d been in a fight, the angry gash above his eyebrow was smeared with dried blood and his rumpled curls clung wetly to the sheen of sweat and dust on his forehead, but it was the haunted look in his eyes that made Win pause–she’d never seen him this scared before—not even on the night Max had gone missing and she’d witnessed Neil’s abuse first hand.
“Billy, what happened to you?” she exclaimed, her voice coming out hoarse with concern and she caught him as he stumbled forward, practically collapsing into her arms.
“M’sorry, didn’t know where else to go,” Billy mumbled and Win shook her head, waving his apology away.
“C’mon, let’s get you cleaned up,” she said, pulling him inside.
Before she shut the door, she noticed the cracks across the Camaro’s windshield and the dent in the dark hood and frowned.  It looked like Billy had hit something big.
“Take your jacket off, I wanna make sure you don’t have any other injuries,” Win instructed as she led him to the bathroom and flipped on the overhead light, pausing to wash her hands before grabbing the first aid kid from under the sink.
“Shirt off too,” she added, surprised that Billy obeyed without a word, shrugging off his leather jacket and unbuttoning his dress shirt.  Any other time he would’ve smirked smugly and made some coy comment about how she just couldn’t resist getting him naked or some shit, and the marked difference in his demeanor made Win’s stomach churn nervously.
In addition to the cut on his brow, his palms and chest were scratched raw, as if he’d been dragged across the ground and Win hissed at the sight, trying to wrap her head around what could have caused it, a nagging worry that it was because of his father.
“Billy, what happened?  It looked like you hit something.  The Camaro was all banged up.  Did Neil have something to do with this?” Win asked, using a clean towel to wash his wounds, gently wiping away the dust and dried blood at his temple, careful not to scrub too hard.
Billy didn’t answer, letting his eyes flutter shut only to wince when Win dabbed at the cut with alcohol, a sharp breath ripping through his nose.
“Billy, please–” she tried again, kneeling at his side to clean the cuts on his chest and trying to catch his gaze.
His hands tightened into fists for a moment before he forced them to relax atop his thighs and he finally opened his eyes to look at her, a wild frightened look in his blue gaze that chilled Win to the bone.
“I’m sorry.  I’m sorry, Win,” he breathed, his voice hushed–hoarse with desperation–and Win had a feeling he wasn’t just apologizing for showing up unannounced in the middle of the night all banged up.
“I’m sorry for everything.  I fucked up.  I fucked up bad,” he insisted, wetting his lips as he held her gaze, imploring with his eyes for her to believe him.
“If anything happens to me, I need you to know–”
“Whoa, Billy wait–” Win exclaimed, cutting him off, not liking the sound of what he was saying.  “You’re scaring me.  What do you mean if anything happens to you?” she demanded, ice filling her veins, but Billy shook his head.
“No, listen,” he growled, grabbing her arms, his fingers digging into her flesh hard enough to bruise, the desperation in his voice enough to make her hold her tongue.
“If anything happens, I need you to know I’m sorry.  Losing you was the worst mistake I’ve ever made, and if I could take it back, I would,” he exclaimed, pain flickering in the dark depth of his eyes.
“Billy–” Win breathed, her pulse pounding loud in her ears, nearly drowning everything else out.  Why did it sound like he was saying goodbye…?
“Please forgive me, Win.  Please?  I’m scared,” he whispered, his voice dropping toward the end, the last words squeezing her heart.
That wasn’t like him.
The Billy Hargrove she’d known would never admit his fears out loud, no matter how frightened he was.
“Billy, I–” she breathed, blinking back the tears she could feel coming.
Did she forgive him?  Could she?
After his explosion the previous year, he’d stayed away from Steve, from Max and her friends.  He hadn’t been in any fights since Tommy on New Years Eve—at least that she knew of—and he’d done as she’d asked and stayed away from her, though it was the furthest thing from what she’d actually wanted.
He’d done everything she’d said and now he was apologizing.
Even if he hadn’t, in that moment Win knew it wouldn't matter and her answer sprang to her tongue without a second thought.
“I forgive you.”
As soon as the words left her lips, Billy clutched at her, pulling her into his arms, pressing his face to the crook of her neck to hide the way his eyes swam with relieved tears and Win held onto him just as fiercely, as if she feared he’d disappear on her–that she’d wake up to find it was all just a dream.
Before she could ask what this meant for them, Billy pulled back, taking her face between his large hands and capturing her lips in a desperate searing kiss that stole her breath and left her reeling.
Win kissed him back, her fingers tangling in his golden curls.
“I’ve missed you so much,” she breathed, pressing her forehead to his, their panted breaths mingling in the close space between them.
“I–” Billy began, his eyes finding hers before he froze, his expression shifting, warping into a look of terror as he gasped a sharp breath in, every muscle in his body going taut.
Before Win could ask what was wrong, Billy jerked back, his wide eyes rolling wildly, as if he saw something she couldn’t.
“I can’t–” he rasped, fumbling frantically at the thin chain around his neck, his hand circling the little golden pendant and yanking, snapping the chain and pressing it into Win’s hand before closing her fingers around it and squeezing, fear and desperation battling across his visage.
“You need to stay away from me,” he ground out, springing to his feet and grabbing his jacket.  “It’s not safe– I can’t trust what I’ll do,” he exclaimed, swallowing thickly, silently pleading for her to understand.
“Billy, what?  What do you mean it’s not safe?” Win cried, jumping to her feet as well and letting out a sharp gasp as Billy rounded on her, grabbing her arms, his fingers digging uncomfortably into her skin.
“Promise me!” he growled, his face contorting in pain, as if he were waging a battle with himself, but Win shook her head, standing her ground.
“No, Billy.  I don’t understand!” she insisted, her heart in her throat.
Billy took a shuddering breath.
“Stay away,” he repeated, his eyes shining wetly.
Without another word, he released her and ran for the door.  Moments later the Camaro peeled out of the drive in a spray of stones, leaving Win standing in the doorway, more lost than ever.  As silence filled the night once more, she looked down at Billy’s necklace still clutched in her hand.
She knew its importance to him–the only reminder he had left of his mother.  So why had he given it to her?
“It’s supposed to protect you.  I don’t think it works.”
A shiver ran through Win as she held the necklace to her chest, her heart aching numbly.  Something had frightened Billy to his core, enough to push her away after only just getting her back.  And though he’d warned her to stay away, he had to know that was the last thing she’d do.
Tumblr media
The rest of the night, Win could barely sleep, it felt like her heart had been ripped out all over again, and by the time morning came, she was ready for some answers.
Stringing Billy’s pendant onto a fresh chain, she dressed and biked down to the pool, determined to get some answers.  He couldn’t just give her hope only to snatch it back in a matter of minutes and then act like nothing had happened.
Plus there was the matter of what had terrified him so badly to run away like that.  If he was in some sort of danger, Win couldn’t just sit by and do nothing.  No matter what he’d said to push her way, he hadn’t been lying about his feelings for her.
Reluctantly paying the entrance fee, she slipped through the women’s locker room to get to the pool side–already packed and it wasn’t even noon yet.  Shading her eyes from the scorching sun overhead, she scanned the pool for any sign of Billy, but it was Heather that was perched at the top of the lifeguard tower across from some other girl Win didn’t recognize.
Figuring he was either still in the men’s locker room or in the staff office, she set in to wait, leaning against the building in the shade of the overhang.
A thought had clutched her during the night after Billy had left, and she couldn’t seem to shake it.  What had happened to Billy’s “hot date” he had bragged about?  Had he even made it to the date, or had he been waylaid on his way there?
She knew it really didn’t matter at this point, but she couldn’t help but wonder who he’d been supposed to meet.
The office door swung open moments later and Win sank back slightly as Billy emerged, not noticing her as he walked past, heading for the gated storage area marked with an employee’s only sign.
Waiting to make sure no one was paying attention, Win stepped out of the shadows to follow after, only to freeze when he noticed Mrs. Wheeler approaching.  Assuming the woman was merely headed to the ladies’ room, she frowned when instead she slipped through the gate after Billy, hesitantly calling his name.
“You gotta be fuckin’ kidding me,” Win muttered under her breath as she followed, keeping her distance and peering around the corner.
“Billy?  I– I understand if you’re angry with me.  I just–I wanted to explain why I didn’t come last night.  It’s not you, it’s just… I have a family, and I can’t do anything that would hurt them.  You can understand that, right?” Karen said, taking a hesitant step closer, but Billy didn’t even turn around to look at her, keeping his back to her and Win’s blood boiled, her anger seething hotter.
So that was his hot, older date, she thought, her jaw clenching tightly, until she remembered that he’d come to her last night.
“Billy, please?  Won’t you even talk to me?  Say something,” Karen pleaded and Billy scoffed.
“Stay away from me, Karen,” he finally replied, his voice cold and hard, and Mrs. Wheeler flinched at his tone, clearly surprised.
“Billy, please?” she tried again, and he finally turned to regard her, his eyes flashing dangerously.
“Get the fuck out.  I said, stay away,” he said, his voice just as hard.
Karen opened and closed her mouth, unable to think of anything to say before giving in and backing away reluctantly, hurrying for the exit and nearly colliding with Win on her way out.
“Oh my God–” she gasped, clutching at her throat in surprise until she realized who she’d ran into and her bright painted eyes went wide in recognition, guilt suffusing her expression instantly as her gaze settled on the all too familiar pendant resting against Win’s chest and she swallowed thickly, trying to work moisture back into her mouth as Win stared her down, her grey eyes turning stormy.
“I-I’m sorry, excuse me,” she mumbled, tripping over her words, her face flushing redder with embarrassment before hurrying out the chain link gate back to the pool, her heels clacking loudly on the concrete.
Touching Billy’s pendant, a frown marring her expression, Win tore her eyes from Mrs. Wheeler’s retreating form and pushed her roiling anger down, remembering why she was there in the first place.
Stepping further into the supply room, she found Billy, setting a half empty bottle of ammonia back on the shelf in front of him, his outstretched arm freezing when he heard her footsteps approaching.
“I thought I told you to leave,” he snapped sharply, not even bothering to look back, his hand at his side clenching into a fist.
“I can’t say I’m all that surprised that it was Mrs. Wheeler you were supposed to meet last night,” Win scoffed, ignoring his words.
At the sound of her voice, Billy straightened, spinning to face her, surprised alarm flitting across his visage.
One look at him and Win instantly knew something was wrong, concern outweighing the anger that clutched her, churning her stomach and racing through her veins.
Completely drenched in sweat, Billy’s dark golden curls stuck wetly to his face while his dark cut off shirt clung to his chest and back.  She’d never seen him sweat that profusely, not even during basketball practice.
“Billy, you don’t look so good…”
He took a shuddering breath and the tension around his eyes softened for a moment as he took a step toward her, only to freeze, his expression once more contorting, his jaw flexing.
“I’m fine,” he spat, turning his face away from her.  “I told you to leave me alone,” he growled, but Win’s frown only deepened.
“You’re clearly not fine,” she countered, taking another step toward him.  “Just tell me what’s wrong and I can help.”
“I said.  Get.  Out.  I don’t want to see you any more!” Billy exploded, lashing out, his fist connecting with the shelf opposite him, nearly knocking it over, and Win jumped, flinching back at his outburst.
“I don’t believe you,” she whispered, her pulse pounding deafeningly in her ears.
“Dammit Win, can’t you just do what you’re told for once in your life?” he snapped, glaring daggers at her, though this time she held her ground, lifting her chin defiantly and Billy scoffed, jerking his head.  “I doesn’t matter if you don’t believe me, it’s not gunna change anything.  There is no help for me,” he added under his breath as he stepped around her, striding back toward the pool.
“Billy, wait!  Billy–!” Win called after him, but he didn’t look back, pushing the gate open and stumbling out into the sun.
Lingering by the gate, Win threaded her fingers through the chain links, fighting the urge to follow Billy as he made his way unsteadily to the lifeguard tower, climbing the rungs only to collapse wearily into the seat, sweat running freely down his face as he squinted into the sun beating down overhead, his expression practically deflating.
Fighting back the sob that caught in her throat, Win tore her eyes away from Billy and stubbornly turned away.  If he wasn’t going to give her any answers, then she’d have to find them elsewhere.
As she stepped into the women's locker room, however, she nearly ran into Mrs. Wheeler once again and the thread that was just barely holding her together finally snapped.
“M-Miss Lewis,” Karen gasped, hastily stepping back.  “I didn’t see you there,” she said, bleating an awkward laugh.
“What were you thinking?
At Win’s hushed accusation, Mrs. Wheeler flushed in embarrassment.
“I-I don’t know what you mean,” she murmured, not quite able to meet the younger woman’s eyes, but Win didn’t hesitate, her anger only flaring brighter.
“I know he's like, totally bodacious–” she mocked, her words dripping sarcasm “–and every bored housewife’s wet dream, but he’s eighteen!  He’s only a year older than your fucking daughter for Chrissakes!” Win exclaimed, her voice growing louder and more hysterical, and Karen flinched, backing away from her as she advanced.
“I know, but– h-he’s the one who came onto me.  He said– I thought you two–”
“Oh?  He came onto you?  So that makes it all okay, then?  Be the fucking adult, Jesus,” Win spat, interrupting her and Karen flushed redder.
“I didn’t go.  Nothing happened,” she insisted, but Win was too wound up, the words spilling out of her mouth without thought now.
“You have absolutely no idea what his life is like and all the horrible shit he’s had to endure!  No, all you see is a hot barely legal piece of ass to oggle and project your pathetic fantasies onto!  You should be ashamed of yourself!”
By the end of her tirade, Win was surprised to find her cheeks slick with tears, and she took a shuddering breath, trying to compose herself, her chest tight.
Pressed up against the row of lockers behind her, Karen looked thoroughly chastened–face bright red and eyes trained on the tiled floor.
“I-I’m so sorry.  I had no idea,” she murmured hoarsely, finally pulling her gaze up to look at Win, empathy softening her gaze when she saw how distressed she’d grown.  “Are you alright?”
Win swallowed, her expression twisting into contempt.  “You don’t get to act concerned about me now,” she hissed, wiping angrily at her face before turning and striding for the door, trying not to break into a run, though she desperately wanted to.
Grabbing her bike, Win took off toward Cherry Street, pushing down the wave of panic that threatened to carry her away and instead focusing on finding answers.  Maybe Max knew something she didn’t.

pairing: John Paul Jones AU x original fem!character
a/n: My very first multiple chaptered fic, good lordt! It has been a long time coming. Also, I thought it was the time to switch to an original character from the usual reader insert for this one. There will be mentions of the oc's ethnicity, some physical features and dialogues in another language (I will put the translation at the end of the chapter) along the way. And as I have said, this is heavily inspired by ivy and would even have a few inspirations and features of other tracks in Taylor Swift's album evermore.
So here is the short prologue, but a very necessary part of this series!
theme(s): AU, character death/grieving.
summary: After years of being a con artist, Hiraya Javier had mastered the ability to mask her real identity to get herself the life she had always wanted: adorned with jewelries, expensive dresses and be a wife to an influential and rich businessman.
When an urgent call demanded her husband, Neil Lewis' attention for a month, she met the quiet but quick-witted John Baldwin, a stable boy and the gardener of the manor. Then she finds that her facade wasn't so strong after all.
the prologue
Tumblr media
1958 - Dedham, Essex
Cold.
Cold was the gust of autumn air as it washed over her already shivering frame. She pulls her coat tighter to her body as she looks around, no other soul in sight. Well, none that were visible to the eye at least. Not that she was a believer anyway. Her fifteen-year-old self had stopped believing when she lost the most important figure in her life, her mother, to a disease she could call a curse. And with that, she had lost herself in the process.
Her fingers trace the indentation of his name, gliding over the rough texture of the stone, still partially moist by the heavy rain the night before. Words were lodged in the back of her throat, causing an uncomfortable ache that an involuntary swallow can't take away.
It was taking everything in her to utter the words that the dead wouldn't even hear out of her mouth, even to a rigid, and now mossy gravestone before her. She knew she couldn't hold on for too long. It had been years after all.
Everything was still vivid. The fire left a permanent scar, not only physically but mentally. Deeply embedded and forever will haunt her.
But it was time to let the rope go and let the blood flow. The key was there all along, and all she had to do was set herself free.
From guilt and grief. Pain.
Her head whips behind her and finds him, the cause of her absolute undoing striding towards her.
“Aya.”

The Director’s Cut (Neil Lewis/Fem!OC)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Neil Lewis/Fem!OC
Summary: Neil tries his hand at filming with some unintended results.
Warnings: Smut - Unintentional Sex Tape
Neil has been wanting to do this for a long time now— make his own noir short film. He’s splurged on an old film camera and made you visit various antique stores for months until you put together proper 1940s outfits for the two of you.
And to be clear, you’re really only going along with this because you love your boyfriend, not because you have any interest in the art of noir films nor acting. But Neil gave you that hurt puppy look and you couldn’t say no. So now here you are, dressed to the nines as the mysterious dame to Neil’s detective.
Every shot is carefully placed by Neil before he runs to his spot. (While you were helpless to Neil’s sad face, Johnathan and Lucien were not.) The two of you have been at this for hours and all that was left to film was the big climax where the two characters would declare their love for each other and passionately kiss.
“Okay, baby, really give the kiss your all,” Neil instructs from behind the camera he’s adjusting, zooming in so that the two of you would be the center of the frame. Setting the camera to record, he races to to his place in front of you.
His character, gruff and stern, says his lines before wrapping you up in his arms and capturing your mouth in a heated kiss. Whatever you’re supposed to do next completely leaves your mind as you lose yourself in the passionate make out. Neil has never kissed you like this before, like you’re the air he needs to breathe.
It’s the kind of kiss that immediately makes you weak in the knees, leaving you no choice but to throw your arms around his neck and hold on for dear life. And it seems that Neil is not immune to this moment because he doesn’t pull away when he’s supposed to, instead burying one hand into your artfully styled curls and the other slipping down your body to grasp your ass firmly.
The two of you lose yourselves completely in the moment, forgetting all about your characters and the still rolling camera.
Breaking away to breathe, Neil’s lips travel across your jaw to your neck, licking and sucking with single minded focus, seemingly intent to mark you as his.
“Fuck, Neil,” you gasp, your hands scrambling to push his blazer off. And it shows how lost the two of you are in each other that he doesn’t try to correct you to use his character’s name.
Shucking his jacket off, he reaches under you and hoists you up, letting you wrap your legs around his trim waist while he backs the two of you onto the love seat nearby. The next kiss you share is a filthy one, full of tongue and bites that smears your lipstick everywhere. His fingers slip up your stocking covered legs, hooking into the straps of the garter belt you’re wearing.
That’s when you regain enough clarity to remember the still filming camera.
Trying to push Neil back, you squeak, “Wait! The camera!”
He pulls away from the hickey he was giving your throat to look back at the camera. That’s when a rather naughty grin stretches across his face.
“Fuck, good idea,” he gets up off of you and dashes to grab the camera off the tripod, slipping his hand into the strap and making his way back to the love seat with you still splayed out on it.
You quickly close your legs and start trying to shove your skirt back into place.
“No, no, no, baby, c’mon,” he cajoles, the camera still focused squarely on you, “Let’s keep going.”
You’re certain your face is unattractively red as you stutter, “But what if—I can’t—“
Neil gives you gentle little shushes, his face finally peaking out from behind the camera to look at you directly, “It’ll be okay. No one will see this but you and me.”
Biting your lip you contemplate your options. On the one hand, the fear that someone will see this is quite high, but on the other, the thought of getting fucked by Neil on camera is the hottest thing you’ve ever heard of.
Coming to a decision, you give your boyfriend a timid nod and try to relax. His grin is victorious and lecherous as he returns to operating the camera.
“Fuck, baby, you look so pretty,” he tells you, one hand leaving the camera to squeeze his tenting cock in his pants.
Scooting forward, you reach out to undo his pants, gasping when his cock springs out red and hard as you’ve ever seen it. You pump the length a few times, memorized by the glistening head and the bead of precum spilling out of it.
“Suck me, baby, please?” He begs, the camera focused squarely on you and the cock at your eye level.
Deciding to fully commit to what the two of you are doing, you lean forward and lick a long stripe from the base to the tip, moaning at his salty taste. His hips jut forward, encouraging you to take him into your mouth and you do with relish. You love sucking Neil’s cock and the way he becomes a begging, stuttering mess every time you do it.
He throws his head back as you suck him down, his moans loud and his words filthy, “Fuck, that’s it. I love your mouth, god, you feel so good!”
Emboldened by his response, you begin sucking him with enthusiasm, taking him as far down as you can and swirling your tongue over the slit. His one free hand gathers your hair up, gripping it firmly and guiding you up and down him with increasing force.
Pulling off of him with a pop, you lick your lips and say, “Use me.”
You barely get your mouth open in time for him to start fucking your mouth in earnest, his grip on your hair just shy of hurting and his litany of praises soaking your pussy. You don’t look away from the camera once, keeping your eyes firmly on that shiny lens.
You’re alerted to Neil’s impending orgasm by his stuttering hips and the way he pushes you to take him all the way to the root, making you bury your nose in the trimmed hair at the base.
“Fuck fuck fuck!” He chants, shoving himself down your throat and cumming loudly and wantonly.
He pulls you off of him just as you’re about to run out of air, your face a mess of cum and spit as you pant.
“Take off your clothes,” Neil tells you, sitting down onto the loveseat next to you.
You stand up on shaky legs, trying to regain your wits about you as you begin unbuttoning your dress. The camera captures it all as you peel the fabric from your body and let it drop to pool around your feet leaving you in the vintage lingerie set.
Neil doesn’t stop his monologue of praise at all, telling you how sexy and beautiful you are as you shed each piece of clothing until you’re entirely bare before him. His cock is already hard again and he’s lazily fisting himself while he films you.
He motions for you to get onto the couch, directing you to lie back.
He’s apparently taking an artistic approach because he slowly traces your form with the camera, the fingers of his free hand running over your body reverently.
“God, you’re fucking perfect,” he whispers, leaning away from the camera to leave gentle, biting kisses along your stomach.
You spread your legs to accommodate him, revealing your most intimate self to the camera when he sits up fully and looks down at you.
“I need you, Neil,” you whine, your hands cupping your breasts in what you hope is a seductive manner, your fingers pinching the buds of your nipples. You needn’t say more than that apparently, because he’s quick to line his cock up with your sopping entrance, the head of it teasing your opening by pushing in slightly and pulling back out.
“Gonna give you what you need, baby,” he promises before pushing into you fully, your cunt sucking him in to your tight heat.
You throw your head back and arch your back in pleasure, that feeling of finally being full, of finally having that spot deep inside of you rubbed electrifying from the tips of your toes to the top of your head.
The camera is fully focused on you, on your bouncing tits, on his cock pushing in and out of you, on your gasping mouth.
This video is going to be Neil’s holy grail. He’s going to watch this video till the end of time— till the tape fucking gives out.
His free hand snakes down to start rubbing furiously at your clit, matching the brutal rhythm he’s fucking you with. You moan and spread your legs wider, pulling your knees up to your chest and nodding frantically. The new position lets him sink even deeper into you, his balls hitting your ass.
“‘Let me cum in you, please, fuck,” Neil begs you, his hand holding the camera getting shaky as he begins to peak. You’re close too, that building pressure low in your belly beginning to become too much.
“Please, Neil, I’m so close!” You try pushing up into his hand that’s still rubbing you, that’s dragging you to the edge.
You cum just a moment before he does, your cries echoing around the room and the camera clattering to the ground as Neil drops it and braces himself over you.
You stare at each other for a long time, your foreheads touching.
“I love you,” he tells you not unlike how his character declared earlier but this time real.
“I love you too.”

Tumblr media
Picking up her tube of mascara, Win leaned in closer to her vanity mirror to put the finishing touches on her makeup when the bright green corded phone at her elbow rang, making her jump.
“Jesus!” she hissed, reaching for the phone.  “Y’ello?” she answered, resting the receiver between her cheek and shoulder so she could finish her makeup while talking.
“Hey, baby.”
Billy’s voice on the other end of the line, however, brought a grin to her face.
“What’s happening?  You about to head over?” she asked, giddier than usual for their date – it had been a while since they’d gone anywhere other than Lover’s Lake.
“Uh–” Billy hesitated, blowing an exasperated sigh.  “Not yet,” he answered, annoyance thick in his voice.  “Neil and Susan haven’t gotten back from their dumb shopping trip yet and I have to stay here with Max til they do,” he grumbled.
“Oh…” Win breathed, her grin slipping for a moment til an idea hit her.  “That’s okay, I’ll just get a ride there and we can hang out til they get back,” she suggested.
There was a beat of silence before Billy replied.  “You sure you don’t mind?”
“Not at all,” Win assured him, twisting her mascara shut and grabbing the phone as she straightened.  “I’ll just call Holly for a lift.  I’ll see you soon, kay?”
“Alright, see ya soon, Princess,” Billy replied before hanging up, sounding a little less peeved than he had.
As soon as she heard the dial tone, Win punched in Holly’s number, hoping her friend wouldn’t be too busy to give her a ride.  She half thought about searching for the key to the garage and borrowing the Chevelle, but Holly picked up before she could give it any serious thought.
“Hampton residence, Holly speaking.”
“Hey Hols, it’s Win, think you could do me a solid and give me a ride to Billy’s?” she asked, curling the phone cord around her finger idly.
“Yeah sure.  There something wrong with his car?”
“Nah, he’s stuck at home with his stepsister til his folks get back from Terre Haute,” Win explained.  “I figured I’d go keep him company til they get back and we can leave for our date from there.”
“Yeah, course!  I’ll be there in ten.”
It wasn’t long before Holly arrived in her dad’s car, her little brothers in the back seat.
“You brought the whole family along,” Win laughed, turning in her seat to wave to Josh and Sammy.
“Yeah, they wanted to go to Dairy Queen after I drop you off,” Holly sighed, making a face at them in the rear view mirror before grinning.
“Where’s Steve?  I’m surprised you’re not with him tonight,” Win pointed out and Holly’s grin slipped.
“I dunno, actually.  I haven’t been able to get a hold of him all day,” she admitted, chewing her lip nervously.
“Oh," Win breathed, frowning.  "Well, I’m sure he’s just busy with something and he’ll call you as soon as he can,” she assured her friend, hoping it was true and that he wasn’t trying to win back Nancy Wheeler or something dumb like that.
When they pulled up in front of the Hargrove residence, Win noticed Neil’s car in the drive and relief washed through her.  At least now Billy would be free to leave.
“Thanks again for the ride, Hol,” Win said as she climbed out, waving once more to her brothers before she turned toward the house and made her way up the walk.
When she knocked on the front door, it was Susan who answered, her eyes going wide at the sight of Win.
“Hey Susan, I’m supposed to meet Billy,” she said, her smile slipping as Billy’s step mom didn’t move aside to let her in, instead glancing nervously back into the house and flinching.
“I’m sorry, dear, i-it’s not exactly a good time… Why don’t you come back later?  O-or I could let Billy know you stopped by and he could call you?” she suggested, her voice trembling slightly.
Win stared past her into the house, only half hearing her as Billy and Neil’s voices echoed from within.
“Where is she?  Where’s Max?” Neil’s voice demanded.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?” Neil scoffed incredulously.
“Look, I’m sure she just, I dunno, went to the arcade or something.  I’m sure she’s fine.”  Billy huffed.
“You were supposed to watch her.”
“I know, Dad.  I was.  It’s just that you guys were three hours late, and well, I have a date.  I’m sorry, okay?”
“So that’s why you’ve been staring at yourself in the mirror like some faggot, instead of watching your sister?”
Win tensed at the turn the conversation had taken, chewing her lip as she strained her ears to listen, Susan still blocking her way, her own head tilted as if she were listening as well.
“I’ve been looking after her all week, Dad.  Okay?  Look, she wants to run off, then that’s her problem, all right?  She’s thirteen years old!  She shouldn’t need a full time babysitter,” Billy exclaimed, his music shutting off.  “And she’s not my sister!” he spat.
The sound of something heavy slamming against the wall was followed by Neil’s level voice.  “What did we talk about?” There was a beat and then the loud crack of a slap, and Win felt her body move without thinking, pushing past Susan to run to Billy’s room, her heart in her throat.
When she reached his open door, she saw Billy pinned to the wall, his father’s hand gripping his chin, holding him in place more so with his sharp gaze than his grip, and she froze.  Billy’s cheek stung bright red and his eyes swam with unshed tears.
“What. Did. We. Talk. About?” Neil repeated slowly.
Billy swallowed, his eyes not leaving his father’s.  For a moment Win thought he wasn’t going to respond.
“Respect and responsibility,” he answered levelly, his voice low, almost hoarse.
Win felt Susan join her, hovering next to her anxiously, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from Billy.
“That’s right,” Neil said.  “Now, apologize to Susan.”
“I’m sorry, Susan,” Billy ground out, staring straight ahead, a quiet defiance in his stare as if he were balancing on a razor’s edge.
“It’s okay, Neil, really–” Susan spluttered, her voice barely there, trembling pathetically.
“No, it’s not okay,” Neil snapped.  “Nothing about his behaviour is okay, and now he’s gunna make up for it.  He’s gunna call that whore he’s seeing and cancel their date.  Then he’s gunna go find his sister, like the good, kind, respecting brother that he is.  Isn’t that right, Billy?” Neil asked, expecting to be obeyed.
“A-actually, Neil, she’s a-already here…” Susan stuttered, but he ignored her, not even bothering to look back at his wife.  Billy however, finally shifted his red rimmed gaze, his glossy eyes meeting Win’s across the room.  As soon as he realized she was there, his jaw tensed, embarrassment radiating off him.
“ISN’T THAT RIGHT?” Neil yelled when Billy didn’t respond and his eyes snapped back to his father while Susan flinched.
“HEY!” Win cried, unable to hold back any longer.  Without thinking, she surged forward to grab Neil’s shoulder, hauling him back.  “Leave him alone!”
Neil spun to face her, his expression livid, but Win didn’t back down, righteous fury running through her veins.
“Get. Out.” Neil ground out, his eyes flashing dangerously.  “This is none of your business!”
“You made it my business when you laid hands on my boyfriend,” she snapped, but Neil merely scoffed.
“My son, the pussy.  You need a girl to fight your battles for you?” he taunted, his voice dripping contempt.
At his words, Billy flinched, his mouth tightening as his eyes squeezed shut for a moment, as if he were fighting to keep it together.
“The only pussy I see here, is you,” Win replied coldly, and Neil’s head swiveled to her, silent rage painting his face.
“A real man would never hit his wife or kids,” Win spat.  “Does it make you feel big when you scare them into submission?” she demanded, though she didn’t expect an answer, nor did she wait for one.
“Fear isn’t the same as respect, and no one here respects you, you fucking pig.”
For a moment, she thought she’d gone too far, her nerves close to snapping as she waited for all hell to break loose, but Neil merely stared her down, his hands balling into fists as his jaw clenched tighter, his muscles flexing.  Despite the fear that kept her heart in her throat, Win lifted her chin defiantly as she stepped between him and Billy.
“What’re you gunna do, Mr. Hargrove?  You gunna hit me too?”
He held her glare for another minute before turning away, Susan scurrying back from the door to let him through.
“I said.  Get out,” he repeated, pausing in the doorway, his eyes fixing on Billy.  “And you.  Find your sister.”
Without another word, he strode away, not even waiting to see if he’d be obeyed or not and Susan quickly followed after him, her hands gripping her skirt hard enough to turn her knuckles white.
As soon as his dad left the room, Billy seemed to deflate.  The angry tears he’d been fighting back in his father’s presence finally spilled over, rolling down his cheeks as he shut his eyes, taking a shuddering breath before lashing out in frustration, slamming his hand against the wall.
“Billy… are you alright?” Win asked, taking a hesitant step toward him.
When he finally looked at her, his expression hardened, shame twisting his features at the reminder of her presence—the reminder of what she’d witnessed.  Hastily wiping his eyes, he sniffed, grabbing his car keys before his fingers circled her wrist, dragging her behind him toward the front door.
Once they stepped into the empty street he released her, turning on her, his pent up frustration finally finding its release, even if it was the wrong one.
“Why don’t you mind your own damn business!” Billy bellowed, throwing his arms up.  “I didn’t need your fuckin’ help!” he spat, his voice shaking with rage.
“Your dad’s a fuckin’ bully and someone had to stand up to him!” Win yelled back, her heart still hammering in her chest while her veins buzzed with adrenaline, her own anger rushing back to the forefront.
“You sayin’ I ain’t man enough to stand up to him?” Billy hissed, his voice dangerously low.
“That’s not what I’m saying.”  Win shook her head, standing her ground.  She managed to keep her voice level in the face of his misplaced rage.  “You don’t deserve to be treated that way.  It’s not right!”
Instead of soothing him, however, Win’s words only seemed to fan his anger hotter.  “I don’t need your fucking pity!” he screamed, his voice hoarse with emotion, but Win didn’t flinch.  Instead, she took a step closer, her gaze fixed on Billy’s flushed face, his eyes red rimmed and swimming, fighting to hold back more tears of frustration.
“This isn’t pity,” she said, her voice trembling softly.  “Like it or not, asshole, I actually give a shit about you, so you better get used to it.”
Her words seemed to knock the wind out of him, his next retort dying on his tongue as he tried to process how that made him feel.  Win took advantage of his stunned state to step closer, wrapping her arms around him.
“You’re not weak.  I’ve never thought you were,” she whispered, pressing her face to his chest.
In that moment, the rest of his fight dissolved and Billy hesitantly pulled her closer, tucking her head under his chin.
Not trusting his voice, or maybe not finding the right words to say, he merely held her, letting the silence stretch.
“Come on, let’s go find Max,” he said, finally pulling away, rubbing the dampness from his cheeks as he slipped behind the Camaro’s wheel.
———
The first place Billy stopped in their search for Max was the arcade, but her telltale red hair was nowhere to be seen, and Keith confirmed that he hadn’t seen her there since earlier that day.  The next place Billy decided to check was Lucas Sinclair’s house, having seen him hanging around Max, despite his warnings for her to stay away.  His folks hadn’t seen her either, but pointed them in the direction of Mike Wheeler’s house, saying the kids usually ended up there to hang out.
Once more climbing back into the car to continue what was starting to feel like a wild goose chase, Win could sense Billy’s growing tension.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find her.”
Billy let out a heavy breath as he ran his hands over the steering wheel.  “She’s the one who ought to be worried when I find her,” he huffed, pulling back onto the dark road, heading for Maple Street.  “That brat ruined our night and got me in hot water.  She fucking owes me,” he growled.
Win didn’t know how to respond, so she held her tongue.  If she was being honest, she was a little resentful that Max had snuck out, causing problems for Billy, though she knew not all of it was the younger girl’s fault…
By the time they parked in front of the Wheeler’s, the sun had completely set, blanketing Hawkins in darkness, a thick cover of clouds rolling in to blot out the stars overhead.
Win circled the car, falling into step with Billy as they made their way up the walk, his hand lightly touching the small of her back as he rang the doorbell.  Several seconds ticked by and no one answered the door.  The light from the tv inside was visible through the lacy curtains, so it was obvious someone was home.
Billy’s frown deepened and he impatiently rang the bell again, shoving his hand back in his jacket pocket against the cold while they waited.  When the door finally yanked open, Mrs. Wheeler stood there in a robe, her hair messily pinned up and an annoyed look on her face.  When her eyes fell on Billy however, her expression quickly changed, a hesitant smile curving her lips and Win’s brows furrowed when she noticed Billy’s gaze fall to the exposed swath of the older woman’s chest for a moment.
“I’m sorry, who are you?” Mrs. Wheeler asked, looking between the two of them, finally pulling her gaze from Billy.
“Billy, Billy Hargrove,” he answered, his voice lowering to a drawl as a grin stretched across his face, his usual self confident mask slipping into place.  “This is my girlfriend, Win,” he added, nodding toward her at his side.
“Oh, are you guys here to see Nancy?” Mrs. Wheeler asked, tilting her head.  “I don’t think she’s home–”
“No, no no no,” Billy cut in quickly, shaking his head.  “We’re actually looking for my little sister, Max.  Goes by Maxine.  She’s been missing all day,” he explained, his expression dripping faux concern.  “To be honest with you, I’m uh, I’m worried sick,” he continued and Win had to fight not to roll her eyes.  “I thought she was at Lucas’, but Mrs. Sinclair said your house is the uh, the designated hangout, so you know… here we are,” he said, spreading his arms.
“Oh.  Oh, I see,” Mrs. Wheeler murmured, glancing to Win and quickly away again before pulling her robe further closed against the chill.  “I’m afraid she’s not here.  None of the kids are at the moment,” she explained apologetically.
Billy’s expression tightened for a second, though Mrs. Wheeler didn’t seem to notice.  “Do you know where they might be?” he asked, fighting to keep his voice smooth and not let his facade crack.
“Uhm, if they’re not at the Sinclair’s, then I would try the Byers’,” Mrs. Wheeler suggested, stepping aside.  “Come inside, I’ll write down the address for you,” she offered.
Billy nodded, nudging Win ahead of him before stepping into the house, a cloying warmth engulfing them.  In the kitchen Mrs. Wheeler picked up a pen and grabbed a sticky note, leaning over the counter to scrawl the address while Billy pulled the lid off the nearby cookie jar, fishing a small vanilla sandwich cookie out and bringing it to his lips while he waited.
“The drive is kind of hard to see in the dark, so you really have to look if you don’t want to accidentally pass it,” she murmured, dropping the pen and lifting her head, her eyes once more seeming to caress Billy’s form and Win nearly snatched the note from her hand.
“Thanks, we’ll keep a look out,” she said tersely.
“You’re a real lifesaver, you know that?” Billy drawled, taking another bite of the cookie with a smirk.
Mrs. Wheeler had the audacity to blush, patting her hair nervously as she glanced away.  “When you see Mike, will you tell him to come home, please?” she asked and Win grabbed Billy’s arm, reminding him of her presence. “We will,” she grumbled, practically pulling Billy to the door with her.
As soon as they were back in the car, his grin fell away and Win rounded on him.
“What the fuck was that?”
“What was what?” Billy asked, starting the car, his hand sliding over the wheel as he pulled back onto the road.
“You were awfully friendly back there,” Win huffed, hating how jealous she sounded.
“Oh please, I was just buttering her up to get the information we needed,” Billy grunted, carefully not looking at her.
“Yeah sure, like I believe that for a second,” she muttered.  “I saw the way you looked at her, Billy.”
“What are you trying to say, Win?  Huh?”  Billy finally looked at her.  “You think I wanna fuck that cougar?” he spat, waiting for her to respond.  “One, I’m with you, so no.  And two, I’ve got bigger shit on my mind right now,” he snapped, leaving Win internally kicking herself.
“You’re right, I’m sorry,” she mumbled, watching the house numbers for the one they wanted.
Silence fell, stretching for a long moment until she noticed the overgrown drive up ahead.  “It’s there,” she said, pointing, and Billy grunted, pulling off the road to stop in front of a dark run down looking house half hidden by trees.  Several dark shapes appeared in the front window before ducking back down again quickly.
“I think we found them,” Win said wryly, unbuckling her seatbelt.
“You stay here,” Billy muttered, kicking his door open, a dangerous glint to his eyes.  As he straightened, he pulled his Marlboros from his jacket pocket and pulled a cigarette from the pack with his lips, lighting it as he watched Steve Harrington step down from the porch, a dish towel draped over his shoulder as if he’d been inside doing chores.
“Am I dreaming, or is that you, Harrington?” Billy called, leaning against the Camaro.
“Yeah, it’s me, don’t cream your pants,” Steve sighed, as if Billy was the last person he wanted to see at the moment.
Billy held his gaze as he shrugged his leather jacket off, as if preparing for a fight.  “What are you doing here, amigo?” he asked, coating the word in as much scorn as he could.
“I could ask you the same thing.  Amigo,” Steve replied levelly, planting his hands on his hips.
“Looking for my step sister, a little birdie told me she was here,” Billy replied, his cigarette bobbing as he spoke.
“Huh, that’s weird, I don’t know her.”
“Small, red head, a bit of a bitch?”
“Doesn’t ring a bell, sorry buddy.”  Steve shrugged.
Billy let out a derisive snort, shaking his head.  “You know, Harrington, this whole situation… it’s giving me the heebie jeebies.”
“Yeah, why’s that?”
“Hmm, let’s see, my thirteen year old sister goes missing all day, and then I find her with you in a stranger’s house, and you lie to me about it,” Billy exclaimed, ticking off each point on his fingers.
“Man, were you dropped too much as a child, or what?” Steve scoffed, trying to brush the accusation off and redirect the conversation.  “Like, I said, she’s not here,” he insisted.
“Then who is that?” Billy asked, pointing to the window with his cigarette, where Max’s face flashed for a moment before disappearing  just as quickly.
Steve turned to follow Billy’s gesture and winced.  “Oh shit, listen–” he began, but Billy didn’t give him a chance to explain before rushing forward to knock him off his feet, sending him sprawling on his back.
“Shit,” Win breathed, kicking the door open and rounding the car as Billy leaned over Steve, a sneer on his face.
“Thought I told you to plant your feet.”
“Billy–!” Win called, but he was already on his way inside, throwing the door open, murder in his eyes.
“Steve, are you okay?” Win asked breathlessly, helping him to his feet.
“Yeah, c’mon, before your boyfriend does something stupid,” Steve exclaimed, scrambling up; the two of them running into the house.
Win barely noticed the mess of papers haphazardly plastering the walls and floors, covering nearly every surface and branching out down the hall like some dark system of roots.  Her stomach in her throat, she only had eyes for Billy who had Lucas pinned to the wall, his fists balled in the boy’s jacket as he leaned in to sneer in his face–the scene a near replica of what she’d witnessed earlier, the tables turned.
“Since Maxine won’t listen to me, maybe you will.  Stay away from her,” Billy growled, his voice dangerously low.  When Lucas didn’t respond, he screamed in his face; all the anger, all the frustration he’d swallowed down earlier was loosed now on a new target.  “Stay away from her!  DO YOU HEAR ME?”
“I said, GET OFF OF ME!” Lucas yelled back, his knee coming up between Billy’s legs hard enough to make him double over, loosening his grip on the boy’s jacket.
“You’re so dead, Sinclair!” Billy hissed, and Win gasped as Steve lunged past her, his fist connecting with Billy’s jaw while he was still distracted.
“No, you are!”
“Guys, stop it!” she cried, but Billy didn’t even seem to see her, his eyes wild as he turned back to Steve, a deranged laugh leaving his mouth.
“Looks like you got some fire in you after all, huh?” he exclaimed, throwing his arms wide.  “I’ve been waiting to meet this King Steve everybody’s been telling me about so much.”
Steve’s jaw flexed as his eyes darted from Billy to Win.  “Get out,” he said firmly, pushing Billy back by the tips of his fingers, clearly trying to deescalate the situation.  But Billy wasn’t having it.
Without warning Billy swung, his fist catching air as Steve ducked, hitting him back.
“Billy, stop!  Please!” Win cried from the edge of the kitchen with Max and the others, her heart still in her throat, fear holding her captive.
Pinned back against the sink, Billy reached out, grabbing a plate from the counter to smash over Steve’s head, leaving him dazed as he stumbled back.
“No one tells me what to do!” Billy growled, back on the offensive.
Before Win knew what was happening, Steve was on the ground and Billy was on top of him, aiming blow after blow to Steve’s face until Steve went limp, knocked out cold, and yet Billy didn’t stop, all his anger rushing out of him in a deluge with no signs of abating.
“BILLY!” Win screamed, finally finding her legs and rushing forward, trying to pull him away.  “Stop!  You’re gunna kill him!” she sobbed, but Billy didn’t want to listen, his elbow flying back in an attempt to shrug her off.
Pain bloomed behind Win’s eye and she stumbled back, holding her face, her trembling fingers coming away bloodied where her lip split.
In a flurry of movement, Max pushed past her, grabbing a syringe from the table.  “Wait!” Win gasped, grabbing the girl’s wrist as she pulled back to jab it in her brother’s neck.
Max’s head whipped around to gape at Win, the two staring each other down for a second before Max dropped the syringe, wrenching her arm out of Win’s grasp.  Instead, she grabbed a bat resting against the wall, several long nails jutting out from the end.
“BILLY!” she yelled before the bat whistled past his ear.
Surprised, he wrenched away from the bat, falling backwards as she swung again, his eyes going wide as she stood over him, holding the bat over her head.
“From here on out, you leave me and my friends alone!” she growled, her blue eyes flashing.  “Do you understand?”
Billy stared back at her defiantly.  “Screw you,” he ground out.
Without warning, Max brought the bat down between his legs, just missing his crotch, the nails biting into the wood floor beneath him.  “Say you understand it!  SAY IT!” she bellowed, bringing the bat up again threateningly.
Billy swallowed.  “...I understand,” muttered reluctantly, indignant resignation in his voice.
“Good,” Max breathed, her friends staring at her in shock.  “I’m taking these,” she said, crouching to grab the car keys from Billy’s pocket.  Surprisingly, he didn’t argue.  It wasn’t until the others carried Steve out to the Camaro and Max jumped behind the wheel that Billy pushed himself up, letting out a frustrated roar, and Win winced as he swiped his hand out, knocking the contents of the table to the floor.
It wasn’t til he took a deep breath that he turned around, almost having forgotten Win was there.
“Are you alright?” she asked, hanging back, for the first time, she was wary of him, her face beginning to throb where he’d elbowed her.
“Am I alright?” Billy repeated incredulously, slowly stepping closer, the floorboards creaking under his weight.  “Let’s see, shall we?  My step sister just stole my car and left us here to go God-knows-where in the middle of the fucking night with a bunch of boys,” he exclaimed, his voice raising with each word.  “And guess who’s gunna take the fucking blame for it?  No guesses?” he asked, a dangerous tone to his voice.  “That’s right, me.”
Win felt ice drop into her stomach at the thought of what Neil would do to Billy if he showed up without Max in tow.
“We could call the cops,” she suggested, interrupted by Billy’s harsh laughter.
“Yeah, sure, the cops!” he snorted.  “I’m sure they’ll be a great help,” he taunted derisively, pacing around the room like a tiger in a cage.
“Billy–” Win murmured, but he turned back to her sharply, interrupting her.
“Nobody fucking asked you!”
“Billy, I’m only trying to help,” she muttered, wrapping an arm around herself with a frown.
“Yeah well, I didn’t ask for your FUCKING help!” he spat.
For a long moment Win merely stared at him.  As much as she felt for him–her heart aching at the thought of the situation he was in at home–Steve’s bloodied face as Billy kept hitting him, the fear on Lucas’ face as Billy had him pinned against the wall, and even the predatory way he’d smiled at Mrs. Wheeler earlier kept replaying through her mind, twisting her stomach further.  And now this.  The way he’d turned on her when she was probably literally the only person in Hawkins who cared enough about him to try to help made something inside her snap.
“Alright, fine.  I’m done,” she whispered.
“What do you mean you’re done?” Billy asked, a frown pulling at his features.
“I mean I’m done, Billy.  I can’t do this anymore,” she said, shaking her head, her voice trembling.  “You just attacked a fucking kid!  You beat Steve to a pulp, and I know you didn’t mean to, but this—“ she paused, gesturing to her split lip and the purple bruise beginning to bloom across her cheekbone.  “You did this.”
Billy’s mouth fell open as he finally took in the state of her face, panic crossing his visage when he realized what he’d done, but Win didn’t let him speak, her own frustration spilling out like word vomit.
“I get it!  I get why you’re angry all the time.  Your dad is a fucking piece of work and you don’t deserve to be treated the way he treats you, but if this is how you channel it?  Lashing the fuck out like that?  I can’t do it!” she exclaimed.
Billy’s face darkened.  “So what, all that shit you said about how much you care so much about me, that was a fucking lie?” he demanded, his voice faltering.  “You gunna give up on me?  Walk out like my fucking mother?” he spat, gasping a shuddering breath and Win turned away so he wouldn’t see the way her eyes watered dangerously, her tears threatening to spill over.
“No, I fucking meant it.  Fuck, I care so much it hurts!” she cried, squeezing her eyes shut.  “But if you keep down this path, Billy, you know who you’re gunna end up like—?”
Billy’s silence was deafening, his blue eyes boring into her.  “Don’t you fucking say it.  Don’t you dare fucking say it,” he hissed, but Win set her jaw and spat it out.
“You’re gunna end up just like your father.”
She wasn’t ready for the look that crossed Billy’s face, the hurt in his eyes broke her heart in two before his rage returned, gripping her heart like a vice.
“FUCK YOU,” he roared, his finger jabbing at her like a viper.  “FUCK YOU, WIN.”
“Yeah,” she swallowed, a tear streaking down her cheek.  “Fuck me,” she whispered, her voice hard, fighting to keep it together though her lungs burned with the effort.
Billy gave her one last scathing look.  “We’re done,” he hissed, turning on his heel and stalking to the door.
“Yeah, we are…” she murmured, but he was already gone, her broken sobs following him into the night.

“So, Win, got any plans for Thanksgiving?” Max asked as she slipped into the backseat of the Camaro, skateboard in hand.
“Oh shit, that’s tomorrow isn’t it?” Win murmured, her lips twisting slightly.  “Uh, no, not really,” she admitted.  “My dad has to work, so I’ll probably get some Chinese takeout or something and veg in front of the tv,” she said with a shrug, trying to keep the disappointment from her voice.  She felt Billy’s eyes on her as he drove down the deserted country road, but he didn’t say anything.
“You’re kidding,” Max huffed.  “That’s so lame.”
Win shrugged, glancing out the window.  “It’s fine,” she said, brushing off Max’s concern.  The last thing she wanted was anyone’s pity.  She’d been left on her own for most of her life since her mom’s death.  She was used to it.
“Billy, you should invite Win to our Thanksgiving dinner,” Max suggested, speaking up after a moment, and Win could see the silent battle of wills taking place through the rear view mirror–Billy glaring back at Max, who didn’t back down, glaring right back at him.
“You don’t seriously want your girlfriend to spend the holiday on her own, do you?” Max insisted and Billy scowled, pulling up to the curb of the arcade.
“I’ll be back in an hour.  You better be here,” he said instead, his voice gruff.
“Yeah, yeah, or I’ll have to skate home,” Max muttered, rolling her eyes before shooting Win a sympathetic glance, flipping Billy the bird as he pulled away, peeling out of the parking lot.
Finally alone in the car, neither of them spoke, both seeming unable to break the silence.
“You really don't want me to come to dinner?” Win finally murmured, her eyes flitting to Billy, hating how insecure she felt.
“I just don’t think it would be a good idea,” he muttered, keeping his eyes on the road, his hands tightening on the steering wheel.  His brusque answer felt like a slap in the face.
“Are you embarrassed of me?” she asked, bile rising in her throat, her thoughts beginning to spiral–she knew he was a playboy, why did she think he’d actually be serious about her?
“What?  No!” Billy exclaimed, stomping on the brakes and pulling to the side of the road so he could look at her, a conflicted expression crossing his face.  He paused, taking a deep breath, as if trying to calm himself before he spoke, not wanting to snap at her.
“Look, it’s not that I don’t want you there,” Billy exclaimed, his gaze slipping, not quite meeting Win’s eyes.  “It’s just that, if you haven’t figured it out yet, my dad’s a grade-A fuckin’ asshole and I don’t want you to have to deal with that,” he explained, tensing, as if waiting for Win to tell him off, and shame filled her.
“Shit,” she whispered, squeezing her eyes shut as she silently berated herself for jumping to conclusions.  “I’m sorry, Billy,” she murmured, heaving a breath as her eyes found his. “I don’t care how big of a dick he is, I wanna spend the holiday with you,” she assured him softly.  “I can handle myself.”
Billy let out a doubtful huff, but he didn’t argue, placing his hand atop hers as a hopeful look flickered in his eyes, gone the next moment.
Throwing the car back in drive, he pulled back out onto the road.  “Just don’t say I didn’t warn you,” he muttered.
The next morning, Win paced as she waited for Billy to arrive to pick her up.  Her father had already left by the time she woke, leaving a note for her on the counter, promising to be home as soon as he was able, though Win wasn’t about to hold her breath for that.
When she heard the snarl of the Camaro’s engine in the drive, she pushed open the front door and slipped into the leather seat.  Billy raised an eyebrow at the sight of her and her knee length black collared dress, her short platinum hair pulled up halfway.
“What?” she asked, noticing his expression.
“Nothing,” he replied quickly.  “You look nice, is all,” he added, backing out onto the road, his hand enveloping her bare knee.
“You clean up pretty nice yourself,” Win observed, warmed by his touch.  “You even managed to button your shirt up most of the way,” she teased and Billy stuck his tongue out at her, his hand on her leg tightening, giving her a warning squeeze.
However, the closer they got to Cherry Street, the grimmer Billy’s expression grew, his apprehension bleeding into Win.  By the time he parked in front of the house, all trace of his grin had disappeared and he reluctantly got out of the car.
“Hey, it’s gunna be alright, I promise,” Win insisted as they walked up the sidewalk together, stopping at the front stoop.
“Yeah,” Billy agreed, though he seemed distracted.
Win smiled encouragingly, taking his hand in hers as she raised up on her toes to press her lips to his cheek.  Billy’s expression softened and he turned his face to steal a kiss, grinning down at her before pushing the door open.
Inside, the warm smell of roasting turkey and pumpkin pie met them and Win took a deep breath, inhaling the nostalgic scent.  Billy’s dad sat on the couch, watching the football game, a can of beer in hand, and Win gave him a cursory glance.
Neil Hargrove was the definition of straight laced, his appearance neat and tailored, everything in place.  Billy had told her that he worked as a security guard, and with his mustache, Win would have probably guessed it–that or a cop.  There was nothing soft about the man, and when he turned his stern gaze on her, she felt like she was being sized up.
Before Billy could pull Win to his room, Neil spoke up, stopping his son in his tracks.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?  Don’t be rude, come back here and introduce your girlfriend,” he snapped and Win could instantly see the shift in Billy’s demeanor–the way his shoulders hunched slightly and his jaw flexed, setting in resignation as he stared ahead flatly.
“I want to meet this girl you’ve been staying out all night with.”
At his words, a sinking feeling opened in the pit of Win’s stomach, making her wonder just how much that night together had cost Billy.
“Win, this is… my dad, Neil.  Dad, this is Win.  Win Lewis,” Billy said haltingly, as if the words were being pulled from him, reluctant even to call the man his father.
“Nice to meet you,” Win said, flashing him a tight smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“You’re not what I expected,” Neil mused, returning her smile, though his too held no warmth.
Win wanted to ask what exactly he expected, but she held her tongue, determined to be civil, at least for Billy’s sake.
“So, Susan tells me your father’s working today?” Neil continued, glancing between her and the television when one of the teams scored.
“Yeah, he works at Hawkins Lab.  They’re really busy right now, I guess,” Win murmured and Neil nodded.
“Sounds like he’s working hard, like any good American should,” he exclaimed and Win had to fight the urge to roll her eyes.
“Yeah well, he should at least get to spend the day with his kid,” Billy grumbled, slipping his arm around Win’s waist protectively.
Neil’s eyes flashed.  “Sometimes when you’re an adult you have to make sacrifices, but I wouldn’t expect you to understand that,” he said pointedly, his voice dangerously low and Win felt Billy tense next to her.
Thankfully, it was then that Susan appeared, stepping out of the kitchen to greet Win.
“I thought I heard voices out here,” she said, carefully keeping her eyes away from her husband as she crossed the room to wrap Win in an awkward hug.  “I’m so sorry your father had to work today, but you are always welcome here,” she insisted, pulling back to smile warmly at Win.
“Thank you,” Win murmured, ducking her head.  “It smells really good,” she added, which made Susan’s smile grow.
“It’s not quite finished yet, another half hour or so,” she said quickly and Win followed her further inside, grateful to get away from Neil.
“Do you need any help?” Win asked, ignoring Billy’s sharp sidelong look.
Mrs. Hargrove, however, practically gaped at Win, completely taken aback by her offer before finding the words to respond.  “You’re so sweet for asking, but it’s fine, really.  Besides, you’re our guest, you shouldn’t be put to work,” she exclaimed, letting out a nervous laugh.
“I don’t mind,” Win insisted with a shrug.  “I feel kinda bad I didn’t bring anything.”
Billy snorted, amused at the thought.  “That’s probably a good thing,” he teased under his breath, hastily avoiding Win’s elbow as she tried to jab him in the side, her lips twitching into a grin despite herself.
“It’s fine,” Susan assured her.  “Though, I suppose if you really want to help, there’ll be plenty of dishes to wash after dinner.”
Win nodded before Billy pulled her away, growing too impatient.
“Hey Max,” Win greeted, sticking her head around the younger girl’s open bedroom door as they passed.
“Hey Win,” Max called back, looking up from the comic book spread open on her bed.
Win didn’t have time to say more before Billy was yanking her to his room and she let herself be led.  This time when he pushed open his door she noticed a small latch fastened to the top corner of the outside of his door and the implication behind its presence was clear. Win wondered how many times Neil had locked Billy inside his room and her stomach knotted at the thought.
Once they were inside, Billy quickly shut the door and strode to his bed, plopping down unceremoniously.
“You okay?” Win asked, joining him on the edge of the bed.
Billy let out a long breath.  “Yeah, m’fine,” he finally muttered, his voice gruff, like talking about it at all made him uncomfortable.  “Sorry for my dad’s behavior, he’s such an asshole,” he growled, shaking his head, and Win gently placed her hand on his arm.
“It’s fine, I was expecting it,” she murmured, the question she wanted to ask waiting on the tip of her tongue as she deliberated it.  Wetting her lips, she decided to just ask, her lungs burning the longer she held it in.
“What happened after that night that you stayed over?  How much trouble did you get in?”
The question hung in the air for a long moment and at first Win thought Billy was just going to ignore it.
“Nothing.  Nothing happened,” he finally replied, eyes staring straight ahead, his voice clipped and hard, as if it took all his effort to keep it under control.
“Billy…”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” he snapped and Win pulled back, dropping the subject, her heart in her throat.
After a moment Billy glanced over, his expression conflicted, as if he wanted to say something, but before he could open his mouth, his father’s voice echoed down the hall.
“Billy, Maxine!  Come set the table!”
Billy’s jaw flexed in annoyance, but he pushed up off the bed.  “C’mon, it’s almost time to eat,” he said, holding out his hand to help Win up, the gesture as much of an olive branch as he could give at the moment, and Win took it, letting him pull her to her feet.
They met Max in the hallway and filed into the cramped kitchen to grab the plates and silverware while Susan dished all the food into serving trays and bowls for the table.  Once the table was set and the food all brought out, Neil made his way in to cut the turkey, taking his place at the head of the table.  In the other room the television babbled to itself, the game still playing in the background.
“Everything looks amazing, Mrs. Hargrove,” Win said as the side dishes passed around the table and everyone took what they wanted.
“Thank you, Win, that’s very sweet of you to say,” Susan replied, practically beaming, and Max piped up as well, echoing Win.
“Yeah, Mom, really good.”
Neil didn’t glance up from the turkey, but his words were clearly meant for Max.  “You could’ve helped your mother more.  Sooner or later, you’re going to have to know how to do this.”
Max’s face tightened, but she merely looked down at her plate, biting back the comeback she wanted to hurl.
Once the turkey was sliced, it too circled the table and Win speared a piece with her fork, getting it halfway to her mouth when Neil cleared his throat.
“Shall we say Grace?” he murmured and Win quickly dropped her fork, awkwardly folding her hands like the others with the exception of Billy who rolled his eyes when his dad wasn’t looking.
Not really paying attention while Mr. Hargrove prayed, Win shared a secret look with Billy, thinking it was awfully ironic that Neil was leading them in prayer, projecting this wholesome family man image when really he was the biggest bully of all.
When he finished, Win quickly shut her eyes, opening them with the others, as if they’d been closed the entire time.  Neil didn’t say anything, but it seemed his first bite was the actual official cue for everyone to start eating.
Win’s mouth was full when he suddenly directed a question her way.
“So, Win,” he began, placing a strange emphasis on her name.  “That’s an unusual name,” he mused, seeming to veer off from his original question.  “Is that short for something?”
Win nearly choked as she swallowed to answer, clearing her throat awkwardly as she stalled, wiping her mouth with her napkin.
“Uh, yeah, it’s short for Winrey.  My mum was British,” she explained.
“British.  Huh,” Neil grunted, taking a drink from his glass.  “Play any sports?  Cheerleading?” he asked, his gaze flicking to hers for a moment before focusing back on his plate.
“No, I’ve never really been all that athletic, except that time I tried gymnastics.  I’m more into music and cars,” she said, shooting a small grin at Billy who snorted softly and shook his head.
“Music and cars,” Neil repeated dryly and Billy’s grin vanished as quick as it had appeared.  “Sounds like you have a lot in common,” he said, his tone flat, as if he didn’t really think that was a good thing.  “Sounds like you found yourself a keeper, wonder how long it’ll last before you fuck it up,” he said, glancing at Billy as if just waiting for him to snap back.
Everyone at the table fell silent, their eyes dropping to their own plates, except for Win.  She stared incredulously back at Neil, taken aback by the bluntness of his comment.  Next to her, Billy’s jaw flexed and his grip on his fork tightened as he seethed in silence.
Win however, wasn’t as adept at biting her tongue, muttering the most smart-assed comment that sprang to her lips.  “Well if you can keep a wife…”
Neil’s eyes narrowed at her across the table as he chewed slowly.  “Excuse me?”
“Oh!  Who wants pie?” Susan exclaimed quickly, jumping to her feet.
“I do!” Max said, latching onto the distraction.
“Neil?  Honey?” Susan asked pointedly and he finally tore his gaze from Win, turning his attention to his wife and nodding.
Win ducked her head as she ate, grinning to herself.
Susan returned moments later with the pie and dinner resumed without any further conversation directed at Win or Billy.  Neil, for the most part, ignored them to go on about how great Reagan was for America.
By the time dinner wound down, Win was ready to slip away with Billy, wanting to make sure he was alright, but before she got the chance, Susan asked if she minded helping with the dishes, and Win reluctantly agreed.  She had offered to help earlier, after all.
Standing next to Susan at the counter, she dried the plates as the other woman passed them to her.
“It’s so nice having another woman in the house,” Mrs. Hargrove murmured, smiling softly to herself.  “Maxine’s not exactly the feminine type, so…” she trailed off and Win nodded in understanding.
“My mum died when I was about Max’s age,” Win admitted, looking down at the serving dish in her hands.  “I miss this kinda stuff too,” she murmured and Susan’s sad smile returned.
“You know,” she began, pausing nervously to glance around, as if making sure her husband wasn’t in earshot before continuing.  “I’m glad Billy met you,” she said quietly.  “I-I think you might be the best thing to happen to him in a long time.”
Win looked up at her and her shock must have shown on her face because Susan only nodded.  “You’re a good influence on him,” she insisted.
Win wanted to laugh.  Certainly that wasn’t true.  She felt, if anything, they were both bad influences, but of course she didn’t say so.
Once the dishes were all washed and dried, Win went in search of Billy, but his bedroom was empty.
“He’s out in the garage with Neil,” Max said, watching Win from her door.
“Oh,” Win breathed, frowning, worried about what the two men could be talking about.
“What do you see in him?”
Max’s question took Win off guard and for a moment she merely blinked at the redhead, trying to think.  “I-I dunno,” she spluttered, her brows pinching further. "I mean, I know he can be kind of a jerk–"
"Kind of?" Max scoffed, interjecting.
“Yeah, okay, more than kind of,” Win agreed begrudgingly.  “But I guess there’s more to him than meets the eye,” she continued, shrugging.  “I know that’s hella cliche, but it’s true.”
Max eyed her and for a moment Win thought she was going to scoff at her again, but all she said was “maybe” with a shrug.
“When you first started going out, I thought you were too nice for him, but maybe you’re rubbing off on him.  Or maybe he actually really likes you,” she said.  “I’ve never seen him act like he does around you,” she added and Win’s lips tugged into a small grin.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, and trust me, he’s been out with a lot of girls,” Max said, wincing as soon as the words were out of her mouth.  “I mean, you know,” she added, her freckled cheeks flushing before she quickly shook her head.  “But I don’t think he’s ever actually dated anyone before,” she admitted and the thought that she was somehow more special than the others made Win’s stomach flutter.
“Anyway, I hope Neil’s wrong and you guys stay together.  Billy’s not as terrible when you’re around,” Max said, sharing a small smile with Win before the garage door slammed open and Billy strode back inside, his expression tense.
“Come on, I’ll take you home,” he said brusquely, his eyes not quite meeting hers.
“Uh, okay–” Win began, but Billy was already heading impatiently for the front door.
“I wrapped up some leftovers for you to take home for your father,” Susan offered, coming out of the kitchen with a plastic bag full of aluminum foil parcels.
“Thank you, he’ll appreciate this,” Win murmured, accepting the bag.  “Uh, thank you again for dinner,” she said hastily, nodding to Susan and Max, who lingered in the hallway.
“It was our pleasure,” Susan called after her as Win followed Billy.
Outside, the sun was slipping toward the horizon, casting the darkening sky in an orange hue as the wind picked up, blowing several dry leaves past their ankles.
“Hey, you okay?” Win asked, jogging to keep up, but Billy didn’t answer, slipping behind the wheel and slamming the door shut.  Win joined him in the car, her brows furrowing with worry.  “Billy,” she tried again, firmer.  “Did something happen?”
Billy started the engine, keeping his eyes on the road.  “It’s nothing,” he said, finally glancing over at her, a tightness around his eyes as if he were fighting to keep something in, to keep his mask in place.
“It’s not nothing,” Win said gently, placing her hand on his arm and Billy tensed.
“I said it’s fine,” he insisted, gruffer than intended, but Win didn’t pull away.
“I’m sorry,” she murmured and Billy snorted, the sound harsh in the quiet car; he hadn’t even bothered to turn on the radio.
“I told you my dad would be an asshole,” he mumbled, tearing down the empty road.
“It really bothered you, what he said about us,” Win ventured, though it was less of a question and more an observation, and Billy’s expression tightened further, his lips pursing angrily.  “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about–” Win began, her words cutting off as he suddenly veered off the road and threw the Camaro in park.
“He doesn’t know shit,” Billy growled, leaning across the center console, his lips colliding with hers as his hand slipped behind her head, holding her in place as he kissed her roughly, his tongue invading her mouth.  “I need you,” he groaned, raw desperation lacing his deep voice, usually so velvety smooth and coated in honey.  “Need you so fucking bad.”
Win gasped, her head spinning at the intensity behind his bruising kisses, all teeth and tongue, as if he wanted to devour her.  Once she caught her breath, she kissed him back just as fiercely, grabbing hold of his jacket and moaning into his mouth as his hand slipped between her thighs, his thumb pressing circles against her clothed clit, sending heat rushing through her.
“Get in the back seat,” he commanded, nipping hard at her bottom lip before pulling back and unbuckling, throwing open his door.
Gasping at the sudden disappearance of his lips, it took a second for Win’s brain to catch up and she hastily followed suit.  Billy was already around the car by the time she stood and he opened the back door, his mouth hot on hers as he guided her, lowering her back onto the seat.
Reaching under her dress, he tugged her panties down impatiently, freeing them from her legs before straightening to unzip his pants and free his throbbing cock, a desperation to his movements.
“Billy—!” Win yelped breathlessly as he yanked her to the edge of the seat and pulled her legs apart, bullying his tip between her folds and rutting into her.  “Oh—“ she gasped as he sheathed her, waiting only a moment for her to adjust before he was pumping into her, his thrusts sharp and frantic.
“Oh fuck—“ she groaned, bracing herself with her arms, her entire body jolting with each desperate snap of his hips, the air filling with the lewd smack of skin against skin and Billy’s labored pants.
“Want you to cum,” he growled, freeing one hand to once more thumb her clit, gathering her wetness on the pad of his finger so it would glide over her delicate nub easily, sending electricity shooting through her.  “Cum for me, Win,” he grunted, the words a harsh plea, as he fucked her into the seat, and she had no choice but to obey, the tightly coiled spring of pleasure snapping at his relentless assault on her clit.
“Fuck—BILLY!” she wailed, cumming hard, her orgasm hitting her like a train, but Billy didn’t stop, fucking her through it til his hips stuttered, bottoming out as he filled her, his chest heaving as he emptied himself deep inside.
For a moment neither of them spoke, too dazed to formulate words, merely panting hard to catch their breaths.  Billy pulled free, hastily tucking himself back into his tight jeans before grabbing her discarded panties and slipping them back up her legs, helping her to stand.
Before she could speak, he pulled her into his arms, holding her to him tightly, tucking her head beneath his chin.
“M’sorry,” he murmured hoarsely, as if he were trying to keep his emotions in check and not quite succeeding.
“I’m glad you were there,” he whispered, squeezing his eyes shut.  “It made today… bearable.”
Win buried her face against his chest with a sigh, the tension from before leeching away.  “I’m glad I was there too,” she whispered back, warm tears catching in her lashes.
“C’mon, I better get you home,” he said reluctantly, clearing his throat, and Win nodded against his chest.
––
“I’ll call you later,” Win murmured, leaning in to steal a kiss before opening the car door and slipping out, grabbing the bag of leftovers.
Billy nodded, giving her a wave as he backed out of the drive, leaving her standing in there as the sun disappeared completely below the horizon.  Win watched the Camaro slip away into the night before turning toward her house.  Her dad’s car was parked in the drive and several lights burned inside.  She wondered how long he’d been home.
“Hey,” she greeted as she opened the door, finding him standing listlessly by the counter.  David’s head snapped up as she came in.
“I’m so sorry—“ he began, but Win shook her head fiercely, cutting him off.
“You’re here now,” she said, rounding the counter to embrace him, her chest tight.
“Did you have a nice time at… Billy’s?” he asked, still struggling to say his name without any vitriol and Win snorted, pulling away to open the leftovers and fix them both a plate.
“Yeah, it was alright,” she said.  “His stepmom sent some food home for you.”
“That was nice,” David mumbled, running a hand through his dark hair as he watched Win plate the food.
“They nice people?” he asked and Win shrugged.
“His stepmom and stepsister are,” she answered, biting her lip.  She wanted to tell her dad everything—about Neil’s abuse and the way his family walked on eggshells around him, about how Billy shrank in on himself, flinching at nothing more than a sharp look or word from his father, but she hesitated.  What good would it do?  What could her dad even do about it?  And how would Billy react?  His embarrassment at the situation was obvious.  Would telling her father just make things worse?
David frowned at Win’s sudden silence.  “You okay?” he asked, ducking his head to peer at her suspiciously.
“Y-yeah, I was just… thinking,” she replied disjointedly, quickly clearing her throat and throwing one plate in the microwave.
“I’m gunna change, I’ll be right back,” she said, retreating to her room.  Once she pressed her back to the door, she let her frustrated tears fall.

Series: Part 1 of
The Laws of Chess
Summary:
At that moment, If the chess player could, he would easily be in another city or even in another state: maybe spaced on a hammock or the roof of the house of his grandparents, in the vast and cool countryside of West Virginia and not in a crematory oven in Brooklyn. But, as he said to his sister before, this year wasn’t like the others for him. This time he couldn't permit himself to have a little vacation, not even for only two weeks; 'cause' in less than fourteen days from there he had to compete in the US Open, which will be held in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on the 51st street of Manhattan. He had to be there, ‘cause she - Beth - will be there too.
