Anon wrote: Hello, as the months go by, I feel myself slowly understanding my actions and others too, thanks to your blog! As an INXJ, recently I’ve noticed how I am weighing my actions whether they are right and wrong. I understand that this falls under moral reasoning and ethics. As a complete beginner in the idea of moral reasoning, I am struggling to find relevant resources to help me understand moral reasoning and apply it in my daily life when I encounter complex ethical decisions.
I understand you have said that it is related to critical thinking, and I have read a book you have mentioned on critical thinking (Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking). It was very eye opening, and I was hoping you could recommend a book with a similar style for Moral Reasoning. I understand that you have listed a few books on Ethics under Philosophy in the resource page, however, I believe that they are tailored towards theory, and introduction to the entire field of ethics. While helpful, I am concerned that it would be too abstract for me to even understand meaningfully, to apply in real life.
Thank you for reading and I hope you could provide some book recommendations on Moral Reasoning :)
----------------------
I'm glad you found that book helpful. I've been exposed to too many sources to remember, so thanks for being very specific and helping me narrow down the possibilities. It sounds like you are more interested in applied ethics, which is a branch of moral philosophy. However, in order to apply an idea, you first have to learn and understand the idea, i.e, there's no getting around theory.
You reminded me of a book I came across awhile ago called The Elements of Moral Philosophy by James Rachels. It was being used to teach a basic philosophy course in a vocational school to students with no post-secondary experience. The book was small, thin, and beautifully concise. If I recall correctly, it was structured around real-life examples and only provided theory as needed, yet still managed to cover all the most important concepts. It should be inexpensive for its size, but I would suggest getting a more recent edition (within the last decade), otherwise, some of the examples might seem dated.
The above book is too spare for my tastes, though. If I were to teach my own course on the topic, I'd be more inclined to use a book like: Doing Ethics: Moral Reasoning and Contemporary Issues by Lewis Vaughn. It is comprehensive and geared toward students who are able to read at the university level. It provides a great summary of all the major theories. There is a chapter dedicated to moral reasoning specifically. In terms of examples, it provides in-depth analyses of many complex social, economic, political, religious, environmental, medical, and technology issues.

How does one examine the ethical implications of political decisions related to genocide and war crimes?
The study of political decisions related to genocide and war crimes raises important ethical considerations. Political leaders and decision-makers hold significant power and responsibility in preventing, responding to, and addressing these heinous crimes. Examining the ethical implications of their actions is crucial for understanding the moral dimensions of political decisions and their impact…

Paladin with a firm oath against killing but keeps bringing it up in really weird contexts.
"Thank you for the christmas sweater! Just to remind you, I do have a vow against killing you over it. What, no, I love the sweater! I just wanted you to know it would violate my oath to kill you over it!"

Desperate Villain Danny AU
(this is a 17 yr old danny)
It started out slowly.
First, a few of Danny's less active Rouges stopped showing up at all. He didn't really notice, and just assumed that they had finally had their Fill of their Obsession for a while and would simmer down for a bit.
Then, some more of his Rouges stopped showing up. No big deal, but he is getting a little concerned for them. They had definitely not had their fill of their Obsessions yet, why did they stop?
Then, the worst started happen. All of his actual Ghost Friends start to disappear. Ember, Kitty, Johnny, even Amorpho, they all start to not show up at all in the Living World.
He goes looking for them in Realms, but he can't find any of them whatsoever. He tries asking around, but everybody else noticed the disappearances much earlier than him and began to hide away from whatever was taking all of the strong Ghosts. He can't find anybody, and the ones he does find won't tell him anything (or don't know themselves)
It takes weeks of searching, but eventually he gets his answer.
The GIW show up in Amity again after a period of absolutely no activity. They have stepped up their operations HARD. Advanced Ghost Hunting Equipment, Much more Competent Agents, and most worrying of all, they seem to know that Phantom is friends with Sam, Tucker, and Danny Fenton.
The GIW comes to his house for a Meeting with his parents, where he overhears them offering his parents a position in their Organization as Head Scientists. While there they also manage to plant Bugs in Danny's room somehow. Although he finds them quickly enough and destroys them.
And then, one night during dinner while his parents are ranting about the GIWs Labs, they mention something that cinches it for Danny.
"And today we even got to Dissect one of the Spooks! It was that Mind Controlly one, you know the one with the blue firey hair stuff that sang a bunch! We're going back tomorrow to continue our Study, this time we'll see how long it'll pretend to experience pain before it decides to give up on tricking us!"
That night, Danny packed up all his things, destroyed the Ghost Portal alongside everything else in his parents Lab, and left his house.
He tracked down the GIW Base, saved Ember from her Cell, and decimated the surrounding Area. No survivors, none of the research is preserved, and he left the Site Director alive to question him.
Turns out, the GIW had managed to Reverse Engineer the Ghost Portal from that brief period of time where they had taken control of Fenton Works. They had been using their own Portal to kidnap any Ghost they could get their hands on. Using the research from those subjects, they perfected their Ghost Hunting Tech and started going after the bigger fish.
"But good luck finding it, Ecto Scum! The Portals location was hidden to everybody, even me!" He said.
"Where are the others!" Danny cried. He was losing control of his appearance by this point. After seeing what they had done to Ember, he was too angry to maintain his Humanoid Form successfully. Even now, with most of his control, he could hear the Static in the air around him, and see the Glitching of his hands as they clenched this Monsters clothes.
"Scattered!" He said with a crazed laugh, "We knew we couldn't contain all of them, so we send them to all of our sites across the Country! You'll never find them!"
Without another word, Danny plowed his arm through the man's chest.
He turned around, picking up Embers weakened Body, before beginning his long flight to Wisconsin. Vlad still owed him a few Favors after all, and honestly his mentorship offers seemed VERY Tempting right now.
(Why reject him if you don't care about keeping your dad alive anymore?)
...
The JLA had recently received a distress signal from somewhere in the middle of some random Forest in Illinois, but when they got to the location, all they found was a crater filled with the ruins of some kind of Military Base, and so so many Bodies.
They had managed to figure out that this was a Government Site owned by an organization called the GIW. A Paranormal Investigation Wing of the Government focused on the study and capture of Supernatural Beings called Ecto-Entities, otherwise referred to as Ghosts.
As it turns out, an Ecto-Entity that had been terrorizing the local town for a few years now had made a drastic change in normal behavior and had attacked the GIW Base that had been posted there.
They would have destroyed it years ago, but this one was unnaturally powerful. It had eluded their capture and terrorized the Town for years, but they had too much pride to contact the JLA and admit that they needed help. And honestly until now, they didn't really need it. The Entity had been entirely confined to the singular town, and had not strayed from that behavioral Pattern in the 3 years since it's inital sighting. They had made the difficult choice to leave it there, sacrificing one town in exchange for the rest of the country.
But now they did need their help. This Entity, this Phantom, was one of the most powerful beings that had ever recorded, maybe even The Most Powerful. The fact that it had left the Secluded town it usually frequented meant that it was loose to wreak havoc across the rest of the world.
The JLA Needed to Find this thing, and Fast.

The thing is, the people who are most "entitled" to "taking a break" from talking about the atrocities happening daily are the ones who will continue talking about it non-stop, either because we actively live it or because we share similar plights. We cannot afford to look away because we all know liberation and decolonization and anti-racism are goals we all share and strive for, and the suffering of Palestinians is the same as the suffering of every formerly and currently colonized peoples.
Yet the ones who talk about "activism burnout" or "compassion fatigue" or whatever, who only want this to be "over" so they can watch Disney+ again and get their favorite Starbucks TM drink TM, are the ones least impacted by what is happening; globally, but in their own country and even community as well. Imagine living in such a comfortable bubble that your main concern isn't the horrific government-sponsored genocide, but whether or not you can "go back" to your fun daily routines without feeling mild guilt because the corporations you're getting your fun and convenience from are either implicitly or explicitly backing that genocide happening right now.
If you can afford to look away and play pretend you are not only appallingly privileged, you have blood on your hands as surely as the military personnel bombing hospitals do.

Consider this: ghosts are actually exactly what the Fentons think they are.
They're snapshots of a longing so strong, unfinished business so deep it reaches out beyond life. Lingers just a bit longer. And if it happens to meet a dense cloud of ectoplasm (invisible to the naked eye, but omnipresent even in the mortal realm), it coalesces. The ectoplasm fits into the shape of it. Which, when the desire is strong enough, it's got a rough idea of its self-image. This tends to mean a more humanoid figure, though it's more often warped in some way–a self-reflection, skewed by said desire. The warping varies on the dead soul’s perception of themselves, the intensity of their desire, how much time passed after death, and how much ectoplasm was present.
In short… no matter how “normal" a ghost looks or acts, it really, truly isn't human. It's animated ectoplasm with a single goal: an obsession. Nothing else. They're more akin to plants than animals, following a single drive with no emotion. They react to stimuli, recognize threats (including other ghosts), and can even imitate human speech and mannerisms to obtain fulfillment of their obsession.
Not “evil" by any stretch, but they're entirely driven by instinct. A tree doesn't pause to consider the rocks it breaks with its roots. A cordyceps doesn't torture its host for fun, or kill with malice. It just does. It follows code in its DNA to survive and multiply–And ghosts just follow the code in its ectoplasm to fulfill its obsession. The more powerful a ghost, the better it's able to overcome obstacles preventing this–whether through brute force, or manipulation. This power is always directly proportional to the amount of ectoplasm present at the time of formation, and how much time passed since death.
What then, does this mean for Danny? Danny, who's previously come to the conclusion that he's only half-ghost, which surely explains how he retained his mind? His independent thoughts and emotions?
What does this mean for Phantom, who experienced an entire world’s worth of ectoplasm condensed as a singularity, at the exact time of his death? Whose strength only grows and begins to exceed every limit they previously thought possible?
If a ghost was as strong as him… could it mimic a human perfectly? Down to a molecular level?
Could it, in its desire to fill an obsession… trick its own fake mind into thinking it was still human? Or half-ghost?

One hilarious thing about detco movies is that they usually play an anti-piracy warning beforehand, and it's always so ironic when Kaito appears in them. I firmly believe Kaito would want you to pirate as much as possible actually

The girls are plottinggggg
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wen chao#wang lingjiao#Realizing she was supposed to have an upper lip mole was a cold slap in the face. So sorry ma'am. I won't forget again.#They are evil dumbass 4 evil dumbass and I think we are all missing out on the sheer potential of the comedy between these two.#They have way too much power and are using it for the wrong reasons - which makes them truly great villains.#And when things don't go their way they become piles of whining sludge.#Wang Lingjiao is forever fascinating to me even though we only get crumbs about her.#She's a servant girl who's greatest asset is her beauty and her attractiveness.#Meaning she's had a life being in the gaze of people with significant positions of power over her.#I can't help but read her childishness and petty tantrums as someone who has finally been given the chance to not feel powerless.#If she was a more virtuous type we might 'like' her more but honestly...I don't think she would have survived to this point.#WLJ has only known power hierarchies her whole life. Probably accused of seduction before she even understood what that meant.#I love contrasting her with mianmian because they have similar(ish) backgrounds but different approaches to moving forwards#But WLJ's story is about flying too close to the sun and mianmian's is about going too close to the water.#Like the sea mist dragging her down into complacency - all the sect powerplays are mandatory to 'go along with' if she wants to climb-#-the social ladder. Yet she is the cautionary tale (and a foil to JGY as well) she leaves before sacrificing her own morals.#Mianmian flies away with her wings only slightly plucked while those who sacrificed everything to reach for the top crash and burn.
