In the game, this sequence was presented as if Malleus' random thought was just coincidentally helpful to Yuu, but in the manga they revised it to Malleus actually helping Yuu without giving him the real answer. I think I prefer the manga interpretation because it's in line with him acting like a king who only gives guidance while letting his subjects grow with their own power.

And also the way he's describing the gargoyles as an allegory to himself... Damn.

bonus illustrations from episode of octavinelle volume 1

The first physical volume of the Episode of Octavinelle manga is now out in Japanese! As was the case in previous volumes, there are character model sheets in the back of the book + a little extra trivia about our Yuu for this part of the main story.

(By the way, there is now a special PV to advertise the Twisted Wonderland manga adaptation! At 1:02, we can see the three Yuus of the manga, plus the backs of 4 cards... Perhaps representing the yet-to-be-revealed Yuus for books 4-7!)

***Spoilers below the cut!!***

According to the notes, Yuuta was raised by a single father whom he respects. This is similar to Azul, who respects his mother, a woman who technically became a single parent after divorcing her first husband. Yet another parallel between our leading man and our villain for the evening!

We knew that Yuuta was a gentle guy that's grateful to have food (both eating and cooking it) through his behavior in the manga (ie getting mad at Grim for not being thankful for the food they have); that information is reiterated here.

Something new we learn is that Yuuta is worried about his father managing their restaurant without him. Because of this, Yuuta is constantly thinking about wanting to go home as soon as possible (wow, I think that's a first for our Yuu leads).

Yuuta is a short king, just look at how he compares to the Savanaclaw trio and even to Adeuce. Well, at least he's still taller than Grim 😸

We also have this illustration of Azul! Nothing we haven't seen before, though a friend did point out that he seems to have moles on his neck in one of the drawings of his expressions (the middle one). I checked back at other illustrations of Azul in the manga and in the game models + card art, and he doesn't appear to have moles in any other depiction.

Yuuta Mito is the sweetest man alive. You’re certain that there’s no one you could think higher of. He’s incredibly kind, a good cook, easily connects with others, and is always up for cheering on his friends, no matter the situation.

And he looks like he’s about to throw up.

“What...I wanted to say was, well...” he swallows thickly, ducking his head to hide from your inquisitive gaze, “I...I like you a lot.”

He spits out the sentence like it’s a slice of tomato gone bad, but not in the way that it disgusts him to say. He says it too quickly, and his face twists with regret as soon as the words are out of his mouth. It’s endearing to see him so nervous (as if anyone else could have captured your attention) but it also breaks your heart in two.

“Hey, hey!” you say, keeping your voice soft as you tilt your head, hoping to capture his gaze, “Yuuta, look at me.”

He looks up at you, lips pursed with worry. He shuffles his feet as he gnaws at his lower lip, and your brain is running with ways to tell him that your feelings are not so different from his.

“I like you too. It makes me super happy to hear that you feel the same.” you smile, hoping it’ll help put him at ease.

He stays silent for a few beats, blinking owlishly at you as he processes your words.

You know he understands when a smile breaks across his face.

“Thank you!” he beams, brighter than anything you’ve ever seen, and before you know it his arms are wrapped around you and he’s squeezing—

Ah, how foolish is it that he thanked you for something that came so naturally?

“You don’t have to thank me for that, silly!” you laugh, squirming away as he nuzzles your neck affectionately.

“Oh, I do! There’s plenty of other people on campus a capable mage like you could have picked, and yet...you like me! I’m so lucky!” he cheers, squeezing you tighter, “I’m just so happy I could burst!”

If you look to the bottom right of the first image, there's makeshift bedding for Yuuta and Grim~

There's a panel where we get a glimpse of Azul's socks, which matches the pattern that Floyd wears in his own Dorm Uniform. These must just be the default socks as part of their Dorm Uniform... It's very weird to think of Jade in these too😭

adbihlbvfvoyqevpbf I love how the manga shows Floyd leaning on Azul and Jade so often; it really helps to characterize Floyd as much more lax than the other two. It also paints Floyd as comfortable with getting up close and personal, especially with people he is familiar with.

MEANWHILE LOOK AT LEONA... WHAT'S WITH THOSE FACES HE'S SO DISGUSTED IN THE FIRST AND PRETTILY PISSED IN THE SECOND... (First is from the Episode of Octavinelle, second is from the Episode of Savanaclaw; you can really take note of the stylistic differences between the two mangaka here.)

Yuuta has been my favorite manga!Yuu so far 😭 Boy's not only kind but his own skills to help him out of a pinch without getting violent or fighting... He convinces Leona to let him sleep over at Savanaclaw dorm by cooking Leona food he actually (begrudgingly lol) likes. AND THAT MEANS A LOT COMING FROM LEONA, WHO HAS A ROYAL PALATE AND IS A SUPER PICKY MASTER CHEF/CULINARY CRUCIBLES JUDGE.

AYO, we got the first cover art for the Episode of Octavinelle manga... Big fan of the golden octopus and the intricate tentacles. And, once again, Azul's posed in that smug businessman way 💀 knowing that you'll probably purchase him...
