2600’s amazing Hackers on Planet Earth con may go down under enshittification
Tumblr media
Catch me in Miami! I'll be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Jan 22 at 8PM.
Tumblr media
It's been 40 years since Emmanuel Goldstein launched the seminal, essential, world-changing 2600: The Hacker Quarterly. 2600 wasn't the first phreak/hacker zine, but it was the most important, spawning a global subculture dedicated to the noble pursuit of technological self-determination:
https://www.2600.com/
2600 has published hundreds of issues in which digital spelunkers report eagerly on the things they've discovered by peering intently at the things no one was supposed to even glance at (I'm proud to be one of those writers!). They've fought legal battles, including one that almost went to the Supreme Court:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCSS
They created a global network of meetups where some of technology's most durable friendships and important collaborations were born. These continue to this day:
https://www.2600.com/meetings
And they've hosted a weekly radio show on NYC's WBAI, Off the Hook:
https://wbai.org/program.php?program=76
When WBAI management lost their minds and locked the station's most beloved hosts out of the studio, Off the Hook (naturally) led the rebellion, taking back the station for its audience, rescuing it from a managerial coup:
https://twitter.com/2600/status/1181423565389942786
But best of all, 2600 gave us HOPE – both in the metaphorical sense of "hope for a better technological tomorrow" and in the literal sense, with its biannual Hackers On Planet Earth con:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackers_on_Planet_Earth
For decades HOPE had an incredible venue, the Hotel Pennsylvania (memorialized in the phreak anthem "PEnnsylvania 6-5000"), a crumbling pile in midtown Manhattan that was biannually transformed into a rollicking, multi-day festival of forbidden technology, improbable feats, and incredible presentations. I was privileged to keynote HOPE in 2016:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1D7APjmVbk
But after the 2018 HOPE, the Hotel Pennsylvania was demolished to make way for the Penn15 (no, really) skyscraper, a vaporware mega-tower planned as a holding pen for luxury shopping and empty million-dollar condos sold to offshore war-criminals as safe-deposit boxes in the sky. The developer, Vornado (no, really) hasn't actually done all that – after demo'ing the Hotel Pennsylvania, they noped out, leave a large, unusable scar across midtown.
But HOPE wasn't lost. In 2022, the ever-resilient 2600 crew relocated to Queens, hosted by St John's University – a venue that was less glamorous that the Hotel Pennsylvania, but the event was still fantastic. Attendance fell from 2,000 to 1,000, but that was something they could work with, and reviews from attendees were stellar.
Good thing, too. 2600 is, first and foremost, a magazine publisher, and these have been hard years for magazines. First there was the mass die-off of indie bookstores and newsracks (I used to sell 2600 when I was a bookseller, and in the years after, I always took the presence of 2600 on a store's newsrack as an unimpeachable mark of quality).
Thankfully for 2600, their audience is (unsurprisingly) a tech-savvy one, so they were able to substitute digital subscriptions for physical ones:
https://www.2600.com/Magazine/DigitalEditions
Of course, many of those subscriptions came through Amazon's Kindle, because nerds were early Amazon adopters, and because the Kindle magazine publishing platform offered DRM-free distribution to subscribers along with a fair payout to publishers.
But then Amazon enshittified its magazine system. Having locked publishers to its platform, it rugged them and killed the monthly subscription fees that allowed publishers to plan for a steady output. Publishers were given a choice: leave Amazon (and all the readers locked inside its walled garden) or put your magazine into the Kindle Unlimited system:
https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/arp/B0BWPTCP4K?deviceType=A1FG5NAKX0MRJL
Kindle Unlimited is an all-you-can-eat program for Kindle, which pays publishers and writers based on a system that is both opaque and easily gamed, with the lion's share of the money going to "publishers" who focus on figuring out how to cheat the algorithm. Revenues for 2600 – and all the other magazines that Amazon had sucked in and sucked dry – fell off a cliff.
Which brings me to the present moment. After 40 years, 2600 is still at it, having survived the bookstorepocalypse, the lunacy of public radio management, the literal demolition of their physical home by an evil real-estate developer, and Amazon's crooked accounting.
This is 2600, circa 2024, and 2024 a HOPE year:
https://www.hope.net/
Once again, HOPE has been scheduled for its new digs in Queens, July 12-14. Last week, HOPE sent out an email blast to their subscribers telling them the news. They expected to sell 500 tickets in the first 24 hours. They didn't even come close:
https://www.2600.com/content/hope-ticket-sales-update
It turns out that Google and the other major mail providers don't like emails with the word "hacker" in them. The cartel that decides which email gets delivered, and which messages go to spam, or get blocked altogether, mass-blocked the HOPE 2024 announcement. Email may be the last federated, open platform we have, but mass concentration has created a system where it's nearly impossible to get your email delivered unless you're willing to play by Gmail's rules:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/10/dead-letters/
For Emmanuel Goldstein, founder of 2600 and tireless toiler for this community, the deafening silence following from that initial email volley was terrifying: "like some kind of a "Twilight Zone" episode where everyone has disappeared."
The enshittification that keeps 2600's emails from being delivered to the people who asked to receive them is even worse on social media. Social media companies routinely defraud their users by letting them subscribe to feeds, then turning around to the people and organizations that run those feeds and saying, "You've got x thousand subscribers on this platform, but we won't put your posts in their feeds unless you pay us to 'boost' your content":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/platforms-decay-lets-put-users-first
Enshittification has been coming at 2600 for decades. Like other forms of oddball media dedicated to challenging corporate power and government oppression, 2600 has always been a ten-years-ahead preview of the way the noose was gonna tighten on all of us. And now, they're on the ropes. HOPE can't sell tickets unless people know about HOPE, and neither email providers nor social media platforms have any interest in making that happen.
A handful of giant corporations now get to decide what we read, who we hear from, and whether and how we can get together in person to make friends, forge community, rabble-rouse and change the world. The idea that "it's not censorship unless the government does it" has always been wrong (not all censorship violates the First Amendment, and censorship can be real without being unconstitutional):
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/04/yes-its-censorship/
What can you do about it? Well, for one thing, you can sign up for HOPE. It's gonna be great. They've got sub-$100 hotel rooms! In New York City!
https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv
If you can't make it to HOPE, you can sign up for a virtual membership:
https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv-virtual-attendee
You can submit a talk to HOPE:
https://www.hope.net/cfp.html
You can subscribe to 2600, in print or electronically (I signed up for the lifetime print subscription and it was a bargain – I devour every issue the day it arrives):
https://store.2600.com/collections/subscriptions-renewals
2600 is living a decade in the future of every other community you care about, weird hobby you enjoy, con you live for, and publication you read from cover to cover. If we can all pull together to save it, it'll be a beacon of hope (and HOPE).

I love your blog and I really respect your opinion. I’ve had a sugar daddy/boyfriend for almost 5 years. He works in Boston and I have a place signed in my name in Miami that is a little over my budget that he helps out with. He will wire me 10 grand at a time. We are totally in love with each other but I’m trying to find a guy my own age and have fun because I just moved down here. I cheated on him in the past and he’s forgiven me. He just says that he wants proactive honesty and every time I’ve done some thing he’s found out about it. He’s very smart and I can’t lie to him and I don’t want to. I’m afraid to see other guys and risk losing him. What would you do?
hah this sounds a lot like mine??? he lives in boston and he would give me $10-12k and i lived in brickell and midtown for a while that he was paying for, but in my name. bought me my car in cash and everything.
i broke up with him during covid because i’m like.. i’m in my early 20s. i want to live my life. i can be with an old guy when i’m old.. not now.
it was one of the best decisions i’ve ever made. yeah he was good to me and he was like the only one that didn’t piss me off all the time, but here’s my thing: i was living my life based off of his income and not mine. his income was never guaranteed because he could find a shiny new toy anytime he wanted to. my rent was a little over $5k a month for a penthouse looking right into downtown, my car was designed for me— you couldn’t buy it off the lot, and everything i’ve experienced were things that i could only experience because of HIM. never ever live your life based off of what other people can do for you. if you love him, great— i loved mine too. but i loved his money a little more. ask yourself if you would be with him if he made only $50k a year. if the answer is no, you’re looking at him through rose-colored lenses. you’re even cheating on him babe— you don’t love him that much.
rinse him as much as you can and create a lifestyle that you can afford because YOU can get it, not because someone else can get it.
excuse my french but never shit where you eat. if you’re making money off of a sugar daddy— he should stay far away from your life and business.

Worldbuilding Intro- Welcome to New Olympus!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Olympius (where my fantasy series Kingdom of Ichor takes place), its capital is New Olympus, which is also the country's largest city! The inspiration/aesthetic of the city is an amalgamation of real world locations like Modern day Greece, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Modern day Rome, Modern day Italy, NYC (New York City), LA (Los Angeles), Miami, London, & many more other places!
Here's some general info about the city:
Near the Lightning Harbor stands a 600 ft glittering Imperial Gold statue of King Zeus (holding his iconic lightning bolt in one hand and an aegis in the other). It's called the Panhellenios Statue, commissioned & built by his son Hephaestus (god of the forge).
It's the most diverse, in terms of population!
Grand Thunder Station is a commuter rail terminal having a connection to the New Olympus Subway. It's a mode of transportation not just throughout the country, but also some direct lines to the Underwater Realm & a single direct line to The Underworld. The terminal's Main Concourse is often used as a meeting place. Grand Thunder Station contains a variety of stores & food vendors- including upscale restaurants, bars, three food halls, and a grocery marketplace. It's a tourist attraction! Grand Thunder covers more than 50 acres & has 45 platforms.
Other modes of transportation include ferries, cabs, buses & trains (courtesy of the NOTA- New Olympus Transit Authority), and even through use of a chariot (pulled by a pegasus).
The Three Kings Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in New Olympus. It's of course inspired by the three main rulers & most powerful gods with each section of the bridge being built out of a different material. One section is built out of Imperial Gold (inspired by Zeus), the middle section being built out of Oceanic Metal (inspired by Poseidon), with the last section built out of adamantine (inspired by Hades).
The governor of the city is a mortal woman named Corinna Sotiropoulou while the mayor is the first of its kind- a satyr named Stathis Spiridakis.
There's the Pantheon Walk of Fame- where five pointed Celestial Bronze & Imperial Gold stars contain the names of the major and minor gods & goddesses. They're embedded in the sidewalks along several blocks of Eaglepoint Boulevard and five blocks of Bolt Street in Downtown New Olympus.
The hearth goddess Hestia's eternal red flame (which never goes out) is a symbol of strength and hope is situated (seemingly juxtaposed) in Acropolis Square.
Acropolis Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, & neighborhood in Midtown New Olympus. Brightly lit by numerous billboards, neon signs, and advertisements, it's often referred to as "The Crossroads of Olympius." It's the second most visited tourist attraction in Olympius (right after the palace on Mt. Olympus) & is the busiest pedestrian area. Notable locations in Acropolis Square includes Acropolis Square Garden (a multi-purpose indoor arena), Mall of Olympius (the largest retail shopping mall in the country), and The Parthenon Theater (the largest movie theater in the city)
* not to be confused with The Parthenon (an architectural feat & temple built to honor the goddess Athena, located in Athens.
Eaglepoint Park is New Olympus' largest urban park, located between the Queenstown & Skyline neighborhoods. It covers over a thousand acres of land- home to the New Olympus Zoo, among other attractions. Another statue of Zeus (built out of marble) with an eagle perched on each of his shoulders is here as well. The Summer Solstice Music Festival also takes place here. All the people of the city and its visitors know better than to mess with the stymphalian birds (carnivorous birds known for their bronze beaks, sharp metallic feathers, & poisonous dung).
Some notable things to eat in New Olympus:
Gyro hot dog- a beef frank folded into two slices of pita bread & topped with tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, cucumber slices, and sliced plum tomatoes.
A bag of spiced olives!
Loukoumades- small fried dough balls usually covered in honey & topped with cinnamon and chopped walnuts
Koulouris- a ring shaped bread garnished with sesame seeds
A bag of assorted dried fruits (usually containing raisins, figs, apricots, & pears) lightly drizzled in honey
Greek frozen yogurt
A box of mini honey cakes!
Dolmades- wrapped grape leaves stuffed with rice, onions, fresh herbs, & pine nuts. Comes with tzatziki dipping sauce & other sauce options.
*The next post will go more in depth into the individual neighborhoods of New Olympus!

Miami, Florida Trip 2022
On 8/3, Octavius the Uber’d us to the airport. This one family cut us in the security check line. We got our rental car from Ace. We took some pics behind FTX Arena then had lunch at Pho 79. Thao closed her account at Citibank. Shopped for ramen at Asian Market. Checked into our AirBnB and napped. We shopped at Publix. Visited Lummus Park and swam at South Beach. Ate Ramen before bed.
We had eggs and sausage for breakfast on 8/4  then drove to Bayside Marketplace. We got on the cruise ship at 11:30 to see the celebrity mansions. We got a pina colada onboard. Then we had Chili’s. Our waitress Erica ignored us and was very slow! We bought some items at Publix then rested back at our AirBnB. We hid our wallets in the coffee container. Thao’s dad told stories of people they know hiding precious items in odd places. We were going to swim at Eden Roc but the beach was dirty so we went to South Beach. We spent $40 on parking. Then we had instant pho. Thao’s parents told the story of how they met. We prayed then went to Walmart. A creepy woman snuck up to our car!
We had eggs with stir fry cauliflower for breakfast on Friday (8/5). Then we drove an hour to Vuon Trai Cay Trinh but they were on vacation so we went to Uyen Fruits for Guava and Sugar Apples. We ran into another family from Texas! The Fairchild Gardens looked closed so we ignored it and went home. While Ba Ma stayed in the AirBnB, Thảo and I went to Trader Joe’s and Target. We hung out in midtown Miami and ate at Thai Express. Ba Ma and us went around the neighborhood taking picture until it stopped raining. We returned to the Bayside Marketplace to go on the Ferris Wheel. I ran back to get Ba’s phone and shared my location with Thảo. Nearly got into a car accident! We went back to midtown and had a delicious meal at Crab Du Jour.
I’m amazed we finished all the groceries from the week this morning (8/6). We checked out of the AirBnB around 10:30 and walked around Maurice A. Ferre Park next to the Frost Museum of Science. The aquarium and all the exhibits at the museum itself was underwhelming. Ba Ma stayed on the 5th floor while Thảo and I explored. We chilled at the Gulf Stream Oculus until the boring Liam Neeson documentary at the Planetarium. Shell was so busy that we filled up across the street. Thao is an expert in bringing down the weight of our luggage. We drank so much water! The plane had to return to the gate for a medical emergency. Our Uber driver had Cane’s boxes all over the floor.
Went to mass at La Vang on (8/7). One man was so mad about people recording the fruit sellers. We ate at Bang Cuon Hoa then rested at Thao’s house. We dropped some stuff off and had some exercise at the new house, returned a Lancôme box to Macys then had rice brick at my parents’ house. Then the four of us visited the new house to fix the garage (which is just dirty) then my parents had a talk with Thao’s about Ma going to Indiana to help Lyn with her new shop.
