Looks vs. Loot at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by The Antiquities Coalition (@/CombatLooting) on Twitter
Transcription below the cut
1: The #MetGala may be "fashion's biggest night," but tonight's event hides some dark truths at @/metmuseum...including a long history of looted antiquities. To spotlight some of the contested objects from the Met's collection, we are featuring #MetGala vs. Loot [THREAD]
2. First up: @/KimKardashian in @/Versace at the 2018 #MetGala posing next to the Golden Sarcophagus of Nedjemankh. The coffin was purchased by @/metmuseum in 2017 and repatriated in 2019 after this viral photo helped solve the case. (link)
3. Next, her sister @/KendallJenner in @/givenchy at the 2021 #MetGala as the 13th century wooden Temple Strut with Salabhinka, returned from @/metmuseum to the Government of Nepal in 2022, after it was determined to be looked from Itum Baha in Kathmandu. (link)
4. Another object from Nepal, @/rihanna in @/Margiel at the 2018 #MetGala as a 10th century Shiva in Himalayan Adobe with Ascetics. @/metmuseum was gifted the sculpture in 1995, but repatriated it to Nepal in 2022 along with the temple strut, after learning both were stolen.
5. Dakota Johnson in @/gucci at the 2022 #MetGala as a terracotta kylix (c. 470 bCE). This piece, valued at $1.5 million, was seized from the @/metmuseum in July 2022 after being linked to Italian antiquities trafficker Gianfranco Becchina. (link)
6. @/billieeilish in @/gucci at the 2022 #MetGala as the Fayum Mummy Portrait. Looted from Egypt and sold to @/metmuseum in 2013, it was seized in September '22 by @/ManhattanDA as part of a global investigation into an international trafficking ring. (link)
7. @/iamcardib in @/ThomeBrowne at the 2019 #MetGala as a painted linen fragment displaying a scene from the Book of Exodus, 'Exodus Painting" (250-450 CE), valued at over $1.6 million. The fragments were also part of the seizure by the @/ManhattanDA in September '22.
8. @/Beyonce in @/givenchy at the 2013 #MetGala as a 2,300-year-old vase that depicts the god Dionysus. The vase is linked to Giacomo Medici, an art dealer convicted of conspiracy to traffic antiquities in 2004, and was seized from the @/metmuseum in 2017. (link)
9. @/blakelively in @/Versace at the 2022 #MetGala as a bronze statuette of Jupiter. This object is among 27 antiquities that were returned to Italy and Egypt in 2022 after investigators seized them from the @/metmuseum. (link)

As much as people talk about the trans story arc in Dead End Paranormal Park, there's one thing about it that I feel makes it especially hit home and I haven't seen anyone talk about it yet.
When a character is trans and that's a major part of the story, and this extends to gay characters as well, the parents are almost always either transphobic/homophobic and not accepting at all, or they're 1000% supportive and will celebrate their child every chance they get.
Now, there's no inherent problem with depicting a family like this, but real life is not as black-and-white, and I feel like Dead End shows a great example of a family in-between. They're clearly supportive, they call Barney by his real name and refer to him as a boy, but at the same time, there's clearly some tension between him and the rest of his family in regards to his transition.
This is especially apparent when his family has dinner with his grandma and his grandma continuously says mean things to him, and his family stays silent and complicit. We're not even aware of what exactly his grandma said, which makes it worse, but we know it certainly had something to do with Barney being trans.
His mom says "there's a lot [Barney's grandma] doesn't understand." This is excusing her actions. This is the kind of depiction that is more realistic. His parents support him, and that's it. They're the kind of people that won't make transphobic comments, but will turn a blind eye when other people do... even if it's in the presence of their trans son.
I'm happy that his parents had their moment of realization and decided to treat their son better. This is not a hate post towards them. This is a love post towards the series-- I'm very happy that the series went this direction because it's more true to life this way. I've met and seen many trans people with parents like these but I never see it represented in media. Just another aspect of the series that makes the representation so good

I tend to think of Flint as Iliad Odysseus and Silver as Odyssey Odysseus. Sure, they’re the same person except they’re not really when you get down to it. The Odysseus of The Iliad is driven by practicality. His thoughts are on war and he will do horrible things to achieve his ends. He’s good at making speeches, but he’s giving speeches to hardens soldiers and survivors of war. They don’t always listen. He sneaks into enemy territory to kill soldiers in the night. In Hekeba, which is set during the Trojan war, he is the one the Greeks send to convince Hekeba to give up her daughter to be killed. His powers are in commanding others and military strategy.
The Odysseus of the The Odyssey is all about keeping himself safe and getting home. He will sleep with the people he needs to sleep with to survive. He will speak to strangers the way they want to be spoken to so they will feed him. He will stay quiet and bide his time when necessary and he will weave stories and rhetoric to reclaim his power. His goals are different, he’s a different person at a different point in his life. I think whoever Silver is, whatever happened to him before the events of Black Sails, the war has already happened to him. Unlike Flint, he really is looking for that place where he can lay down his oar and walk out of the story.

Writing has found its way back to me slowly the last couple of months... it makes me so, so happy. I've spent so long struggling to come up with anything, but I've been focusing on writing in shorter bursts and shorter stories, and I finished one short story (very pleased with it) and I'm close to finishing a first draft of one that will hit around 10k words, and me and a good friend have decided to send one another a weekly prompt to keep our quick thinking active and write something small and then edit the others work. I dunno. Feels good to be finding my feet again, and couldn't come at a better time with going back to uni and studying this shit full time. I don't have to re-learn on the job or just hope for the best anymore.
