Okay but
A whumpee in too much pain to speak leaning heavily into someone holding them upright. Squeezing eyes shut as they reply to questions with a tight nod or shake of the head against their shoulder…

same guy who talked abt whumpees dying suddenly, back with another whumpee death idea bc its kinda my niche.
whumpee is injured. caretaker sees them fall and rushes over to help. whumpee seems frantic, they keep insisting to caretaker that there's something they have to tell them. caretaker is about to say that they can tell them later, because they're going to be fine, but then they manage to uncover the wound under whumpee's clothes and the words die on their lips. it's so much worse than they thought. without immediate medical care that they don't have access to, whumpee will be dead in minutes.
hands trembling, caretaker asks whumpee to say what they need to say. whumpee's strength is already leaving them fast, so caretaker has to lean in close to hear them almost whisper their final words into their ear. they feel whumpee's last breath on their skin.
my short response to this would be “oh 😢😭😭” — whereas the longer one would be “okay, but what if they survived and later woke up in the hospital with caretaker by their side? because I love whump, angst and hurt/comfort, and hospital/medical whump is my personal favorite, which I cherish very dearly; so, in terms of that Comfort (from the hurt/comfort) part, we’d have this nice scene where whumpee woke up to caretaker holding their hand, and whumpee had told caretaker what they wanted to tell them when they thought they were going to die, and caretaker got to take care of whumpee and slowly nurse them back to health. the road towards recovery wouldn’t be an easy one, but at least whumpee was alive. wounded but alive.” I know this was supposed to be a Major Character Death trope (if that’s your thing, that’s totally cool) though for me, personally, I love me a trope where whumpee is severely wounded enough that they could’ve died, but miraculously survived somehow. and then it’s caretaker looking after them and nursing them back to health. I mean it’s the ‘ugly road towards recovery’ part that gives by whumperflies. because it’s ugly and it’s messy and whumpee might even wish they were dead, but they’re alive, and caretaker is going to make sure they stay alive. it’s even better if caretaker is whumpee’s enemy.
also… apologize if I got carried away. it tends to happen sometimes.

Please engage with this anon ask in good faith. I know I'm almost repeating what another anon said but I'm giving my own opinion on this topic, and hopefully in a more concise way.
I personally think you're clashing with the whump community or being ignored by people who follow you on the torture apologia post due to a difference in how whump is seen by you and your audience.
For exemple, I don't know your instance on people who write rape erotica, stalking erotica, or kidnapping erotica. People who write this stuff to exclusively jack off are not writing it as a realistic portrayal of these topics, nor do I think they're rape, stalking or kidnapping apologists for writing the way they do. Hell, visit the yandere erotica side of Tumblr and you'll see that.
It's engaging in bad faith and not engaging with the genre properly to read this kind of writing and then accuse them of being apologists.
Now the whump community, as someone who has been here regularly in the last few years, feels in it's majority as a non sexual torture porn community. With that I mean they write whump in the same way one would write a torture erotic scenario, except in a non sexual way. If you see how people talk about whumperflies you will see it's true. I'm not the first to point this out.
I would say 30% of the community writes whump as a serious deep dive into torture and it's effects, 60% as a non sexual "kink" way, and 10% as actual kink. Engaging with this 60% of the community that writes almost to “jack off” in a way (and the 10% that writes it as an actual kink) and expect them to write what they do the way you, a serious thriller writer, does, it's almost like going at people who write dark, fucked up and unrealistic erotica and holding them to the same standards as realistic romance. It's just not how it works and it's engaging with the work in bad faith.
Unless you also think the people who write that sort of fucked up erotica should also stop and only write it realistically. Then my bad, I don't agree but I hope you have a nice day and find people who agree. Because I don't think you will find them with the people you're trying to reach and you will keep getting frustrated because you're not being heard.
I don't think I will change your opinion due to you being dead set on it, but I hope you at least give it a thought instead of just saying "don't engage with my content if you don't agree" while also asking yourself why you're being ignored.
the very first sentence of your ask seems to accuse me of taking all your buddies in bad faith, and as a guy who famously can’t spot the blatant irony in a move like that, i guess i’ll just take it seriously. after all, some people are reading what i’m saying right now with the notion in the back of their heads that i might be deliberately dishonest or unreasonable, and i’ve barely even started talking yet. so thanks
it’s not that i don’t engage in good faith or aren’t willing to change my opinion if i’m presented with a genuinely better viewpoint, it’s that people who disagree with me just tend to have such shit non-arguments, so goddamn consistently, i’ve started being able to predict the bullshit before it even registers as conscious thought to them – and then they keep fucking proving me right. you included, not to muddy the waters or anything cough, payback
being kinda mean about it is not the same as misconstruing someone’s position, for the record. so with that in mind, here’s 2100 words of, genuinely, good faith arguments mixed with the occasional jabs of a guy who refuses to infantilize people over how little they’ve thought things through.
i know i literally just insulted your intelligence - which was in response to you sewing doubt about my credibility, idk if i mentioned that part – sarcasm aside though, the bar is genuinely set so low here, and you are one of the few people who seem to at least know how to construct something that looks like a proper criticism. your formatting is terrible, please don't do 3 paragraph breaks in a row all the time. it's got some structure issues, you repeat yourself a bit, and go on tangents that aren’t quite connected to anything, but, with that said, all the necessary elements of an argument are in there. credit where its due, and all that
to prove to you that i’m responding to you in good faith, im gonna start out by giving you the strongest interpretation of the core of your argument as i can, in my own words, so you know exactly what i’m responding to. you called your version concise, prepare for something concise-r. and let me know if i misunderstood anything.
by criticizing whump writing for the use of torture apologia, i am ignoring the conventions (aka the set expectations between writer and reader) set by whump as a genre.
a core convention of whump as a genre is that it is not meant to reflect reality.
therefore, my criticism of whump writing is not applicable.
the rape kink subgenre of erotica features rape apologism. (i know you mentioned a bunch but let's just stick to the rape kink for the sake of brevity)
a core convention of the rape kink subgenre is that it is not meant to reflect reality.
since i criticise the whump community for torture apologia under the same premises, i must also be critical of rape kink content.
now for the acknowledgement of common ground: i agree with points 4 and 5.
moving on. i’m gonna start upfront by addressing a part of your ask that i didn’t mention above, which is the similarity you drew between the physical response to reading whump (“whumperflies”) and the physical response to reading kink (sexual pleasure). not to burst your bubble right off the gate, but the reason i didn’t include it as part of your argument is that it literally means nothing. any genre of fiction can do this. music does it. eating tasty food does it. a roller coaster ride does it. having sex does it. i don’t know why people treat this like some kind of valid argument in and of itself, what you’re describing here is the release of endorphins. this is enjoying things 101, welcome to the human experience, it’s not all bad.
on to my response to your actual argument, which is where things take a turn: i don’t believe that “whump” can be classified as a genre.
the following fucking 1000 words - no im not kidding, im on good faith behavior here - are fundamentally tedious. it goes into some literary theory and some longwinded explanations as to why i hold this opinion, and also lays out my views on the rape kink stuff. skip to the red part for my conclusions if you’re not interested in the nitty gritty.
the term “genre” is hard to pin down, and you’ll find different definitions of it online. i think you, anon, would agree that a core part of a genre is that it’s a category of media that has specific socially developed conventions, which is another way to say that writers expect their readers to approach their work in certain ways, and readers in turn expect the work itself to feature certain components. for the latter, this can mean things like tone/mood, subject matter, motifs, composition, conflict type, writing style, or what have you. a genre is defined by the many different expectations, or conventions, that we have for it. convention is a fancy word for "an agreement about how this thing is usually done".
let’s take mystery fiction as an illustrative example, because the mystery genre is pretty straightforward. a mystery writer expects the following things in their reader: curiosity and a desire to know more, attentiveness, a willingness to ask questions, and to be skeptical of the information that is given. in turn, the reader expects certain things from mystery fiction, especially the following sequence: an event occurs, the protagonist wants to find out whodunit, the mystery is unraveled little by little as the protagonist looks for clues and gathers evidence, until it is finally solved with a big reveal in the climax of the story. the central driving factor within every mystery is the protagonist’s aim to find out what happened and why. this is inherent to mystery fiction. you cannot write mystery without it.
this is just to give you a solid grasp of what these conventions usually look like. now, uh. i’m sex repulsed, so please excuse my lack of familiarity with this next bit.
the genre of erotica has the following conventions: something sexy is gonna happen, and i think that sums it up. the most important expectations tied to erotica, i would argue, are actually held by the author, towards the reader. being fully aware that the sexiness of things is exaggerated for the sake of atmosphere, erotica authors expect their readers to understand that their work might not always reflect what reality will be like, and that it serves the sole purpose of a sexual fantasy. in the case of kink/fetish content surrounding rape, this expectation increases exponentially – so much so, that just to be absolutely sure everybody’s on the same page, a lot of these writers go out of their way to remind their readers out-of-text, all the goddamn time, plastering disclaimers all the fuck over their writing and bios, that their writing does not reflect reality, that no, your typical rape victim isn't secretly into it, that consent is always mandatory, etc.
it is my strongly held passionate belief that this is ok lol. erotica is not for me but i have nothing against people with rape kinks, like you're implying. it’s about the very, very strong nature of the conventions associated with this genre of content, which is evidenced most clearly by the many serious discussions about rape and rape apologism that happen out-of-text in these communities, that makes me pretty confident that they’re fully aware that they’re engaging in fantasy. just so we’re clear on that.
while we’re on that topic: no such discussions happen in the whump community in regards to real life torture or torture apologia, at least i’ve never seen it happen. and i find it more than a little bit sussy that ive gotten this many asks over the last few days asking me if brainwashing is real or not. this staggering lack of awareness about what torture can and can't do should be concerning to people, but for some reason, it is not. your overall approach to the subject of torture hasn't given me the impression that you guys can tell fact from fiction, that you are even aware of where reality ends and where the fantasy begins. but i digress.
you can see solid proof that whump is not a “genre” just by going through the community tags here on tumblr. the genres that people use and engage with through fandom here vary from superhero movies to medical dramas, historical fiction, action thrillers, horror, musicals, anime, fantasy, etc. the list goes on and on. and i get that genres can overlap, and that you want to counter right now that someone writing “fantasy whump” is a combination of two genres, but… then there’s all those gif blogs. and what do we do about those? this type of fandom whump doesn’t create content in this one unifying “whump genre” – it pulls content from a wide breadth of genres and staples that same exact label on it, whump.
here's what that means: emotional or physical distress.
that’s not a genre. it’s a subject matter.
and it includes all the so-called “subgenres” too, by the way, from the hurt/comfort (drama, action, often romance) to pure torture porn (thriller/suspense/horror) to more in-depth explorations of trauma and recovery (psychological realism) to pet whump (ffffucking magical realism) to sickfics (drama, medical drama, often romance). the expectations you have as a writer and as a reader, the socially determined conventions, are fundamentally inconsistent among all of these different genres. its why you guys kept fighting – im assuming you still do, its been a while since i checked – over what the fuck “whump” even means.
if you as a reader approach a recovery arc in the same way you do the torture porn, both of which are whump, you’re going to get bored very quickly, because your expectations and the expectations set by the author are incompatible. you're expecting something quick-paced and intense, something extreme and graphic. instead you're met with a much slower pace, a subtler form of character exploration. the dialogue is more subdued. the writing style is different. the scene structure is different, the story beats are different. there’s an attention to inner conflict, to symbolism and metaphor, to long sequences of dialogues and silences between characters which just aren’t there in the torture porn. the tonal shift alone should give it away easily. this is because these two things come from different genres. the subject matter - emotional or physical distress - is the only common thread here.
homicide is a subject matter, and how it is portrayed and explored depends on the genre it inhabits. a homicide in mystery fiction sets up a mystery, some puzzle to solve. homicide in slashers is extreme and gory, over-the-top, served for shock value. homicide in psychological fiction isn’t sensationalized in the same way – it’s grim, somber, something you have to think about. depictions of homicide in comedy or parodies tend to serve as gallows humor. in action – well, those are the bad guys, they fall over, and that’s about that.
homicide as a subject matter serves vastly different purposes across genres, and because of that, it can't set up any expectations in the reader, other than the somebody-gets-murdered part. it doesn't have a convention as to how it will be presented or portrayed, what the mood is going to be, which part of it you're supposed to be paying attention to as an audience member. subject matters have no conventions. they are just "the thing you are portraying."
and this is also true for emotional or physical distress. your only expectation is this: someone feels emotional or physical distress. that's about all you're gonna know about a work from reading the word whump alone - the rest comes from the genre it inhabits. whump itself is just not a literary genre.
the first point of your argument hinges on the idea that whump follows a specific set of social conventions. i disagree with that, for the reasons i hope ive managed to lay out well here. whump has no conventions, because it is not a genre.
and if you think im wrong about this – plot twist, that doesn’t even actually matter. i made you read all of this shit for nothing. this was all just an excuse for me to trick you all into my needless literary theory nerd shit, get got
see, the second point of your argument hinges on the idea that a fundamental convention set by whump as a “genre” is that it is not meant to reflect reality. but you provided me with an interesting statistic, and while i recognize that you literally just pulled it out of your own ass as a way to give yourself a vague air of empiricism, i just want you to keep in mind that you yourself brought this up.
I would say 30% of the whump community writes whump as a serious deep dive into torture and it's effects, ...
do you see why i think people keep accidentally proving me right? this “serious deep dive into torture and its effects” by a staggering third of whump writers, according to you, sounds an awful lot like they are aiming for realism – something that should not be possible within the conventions of this “genre”. what the fuck, huh.
i’m just guessing here, so take this whole paragraph with a grain of salt, but this reads to me like someone who made that convention absolutely the fuck up as a last minute resort to absolve themself from the criticism of apologia, specifically, because they saw this convention work for rape erotica. which is why y’all bring that particular subgenre up so much in this discussion. but because you don’t actually view this “it’s not meant to reflect reality” convention as fundamental to whump in any capacity, in the same way it is with rape erotica, well. it just slips out, yknow.
not to mention that thing i said about you guys not even being able to distinguish fact from fiction in regards to torture, regardless of the many, many posts yall make about "realism in whump" - which also kinda dulls your point. but whatever anon, you made my argument better than i could’ve
your third point hinged on the validity of the first two, which i’d like to think i’ve demonstrated, in good faith, at the very least are based on questionable premises - one by me, and one by yourself. the sixth point is null and void for the same reasons.
alas, i have to conclude that your writing is not absolved of my criticism quite yet. A for effort tho. at least i had fun with it

what a whump scene you think of a lot (whether its really good or important to you or any other reason)
Time for me to shill for my favorite book, Six of Crows.
SoC is a fun dark-ish fantasy heist story set in a faux-Victorian London where a group of queer teens do crimes. Would recommend even if it weren't for its whumpy elements.
BUT THE WHUMPY ELEMENTS
I will always go back to the scene where the group's rogue gets stabbed. Not only does the scene itself give me major whumperflies, the book spends a decent amount of time on her recovery, which is hard to find in a world with magical healing. There's lots of other whumpy moments as well, but that scene is the one that grabbed me by the face and said "you have a new hyperfixation now".
Anyway, thank you for the ask! I will never turn down an opportunity to talk about Six of Crows.

Whumpmas in July #4
Tumblr media
Share a TV show, movie, or any media that gives you the whumperflies! (Feel free to go off about your favorite episodes/moments!)
last year i shared the Black Mirror episode USS Callister for this prompt, which i recently rewatched, still highly recommend that!
so i'm actually a massive anime fan, and today i'm going to recommend TWO of my favorite whumpy anime! (because i couldn't decide which to go with lol)
Tumblr media
The Case Study of Vanitas
i've mentioned this a few times before on this blog, but this vampire anime was a major inspiration for my series, Kane & Jim. Bellamy is heavily inspired by the main character Noè. The Case Study of Vanitas takes place in steampunk 1800s France, and it's about an unhinged human man, Vanitas, who acts as a doctor to cursed vampires: a curse that makes them go feral with bloodlust. as well as his partner Noè, a kind and idealistic vampire (pictured above).
this anime has a good balance of drama and comedy, but when it gets serious, it really gets serious. the whump and angst in here is off the charts. everyone has a tragic backstory, with Vanitas's involving being tortured as a human experiment. the vampires are certainly not exempt from this either. highly recommend this one if you want some good vampire whump! it's on hulu, crunchyroll, and funimation.
my favorite scene from this one is actually one of the less-whumpy ones. Noè is attacked by a vampire hunter, promptly kicks the hunter's ass, politely introduces himself, and asks to be friends. when the vampire hunter agrees, Noè starts crying from joy. he's so cute. my favorite vampire character of all time.
content warnings for the show: minor whump in a flashback episode about Vanitas's tragic past, heavily sexualized blood-drinking.
Tumblr media
Re:Zero
this one is probably the whumpiest anime i know. it's an isekai, where our boy has been transported from the real world to a fantasy world. but instead of fun adventures, he gets heaps and heaps of trauma!
Subaru is a really interesting protagonist. he starts off like your typical isekai protag who thinks he's gonna be the hero and get the girl, but reality smacks him in the face and he really grows as a character. he has exactly one special ability, and it's a doozy: he can't die. every time he dies, he wakes up at some previous point before his death and gets a redo. this obviously results in countless violent deaths and immense amounts of psychological trauma. you can see him pictured above having a little breakdown about it. that happens a lot, especially considering he's also cursed to be unable to tell anyone.
the one thing i would say i dislike about this anime are the female character designs, which kind of suck. but the plot is great, character development is EXCELLENT, can't wait for season 3! Re:Zero is only available on crunchyroll and wherever you pirate anime.
my favorite scene is the one where subaru finally meets someone his curse will let him talk to about his immortality and he breaks down crying with relief. this is actually great to watch by itself even if you haven't seen the show, poor Subaru...
youtube
content warnings for the show: minor whump (Subaru is 17 in season 1 and several children die offscreen in doomed timelines), gore, multiple suicides (temporary due to the nature of Subaru's immortality)

73. Looking for advice
CW: institutionalised slavery, dehumanisation, box boy universe, pet whump

Lydia looked up towards the stairs and listened. The house was silent. In all likelihood, Cory had gone to bed. She quietly pulled the door to her study closed anyway. She didn’t want Coriander to see this.
She pushed the start button on her laptop and listened to it whirring and buzzing quietly to itself. When it was ready, she opened her browser and logged in to the forum. She typed in “GreenBookworm” and her password.
Lydia had been lurking around for a couple of days and now she thought it was time to actually ask a question. She felt a bit nervous. Lydia had discovered plenty of pet owner forums online, and this, focused on pet care and welfare, seemed the best out of a bad bunch. One memorably awful one had been dedicated to sharing photos of “pets after punishment”. She had deleted her browser history after visiting that one. Coriander didn’t use her computer, but she still worried that he would find out that she had seen it. She was sure he would infer that she had been looking for ideas.
Lydia pulled a hand through her hair. It was frustrating that Cory so easily could slip back into what she thought of as his ‘pet practices’. He was so brave and she thought that she had done a pretty decent job of building trust between them. Lydia did feel like he was improving, little by little, but still, the step between him acting as a person and acting like a pet was so short.
Discussing her and Coriander’s situation with Linden had been useful, and she really felt like she needed more ideas. Perhaps the other pet owners on the forum could help. There was one major thing that worried her and that had been particularly bad lately. She would start with that.
Quickly, she typed in: “My pet has terrible nightmares, what can I do?” She clicked on ‘send’. Fingers crossed, Lydia logged out and went to bed.

whumper who manipulated whumpee into believing that they're family, they care, and that everything is okay. that whumpee's pain is for the greater good, and that everything will be okay in the end.
caretaker stumbles upon whumpee being hurt by whumper, and immediately goes to save whumpee, being a caring and compassionate person.
whumpee has known nothing but pain and whumper's "love" (anger) for the majority of their life, and don't know what to do upon being saved.
whumper, pissed off at whumpee being frozen in place in confusion and fear at the situation, curses at them and chooses to leave them by themselves for a while. whumpee will come crawling home, they always do.
caretaker helps whumpee and gives them a place to stay. whumpee has no clue how to respond to any of caretaker's nice gestures or gifts.
over time, whumper grows frustrated that their little pet hasn't come running up to their doorstep begging for another chance, so they take matters into their own hands and go track down whumpee.
our poor little whumpee is forced to make the choice between caretaker, the only one who's ever treated them with such respect and kindness, and whumper, who is so, so important, practically a deity in whumpee's eyes – one who hurts them, but of course, it's only because they love and care for whumpee.
so, what does whumpee choose? to stay with caretaker and to feel guilty for years to come for choosing someone they met on the street over the very one who raised them, who taught them to be strong and to fight? or to go home with whumper, to go back to the cycle of hurt and pain, hurting worse now because they've known real love and miss it?
this right here. 100/100 🤤🥹🫠 the whumperflies. what a brilliant prompt for your blorbos. absolutely perfect. nothing more to add

Nice ask week question (whump edition):
What is your favorite TV show whump episode (or series of episodes) and why does it give you whumperflies?
Apologies for my late response!! And thank you for asking!
Prior to Lone Star, the vast majority of my favorite tv shows were comedies. Though I've always enjoyed whump in fanfiction, I think Lone Star might be the first show I've loved where I actually get to see it on screen!
There's lots of great whump to love in Lone Star, but I think my absolute favorite has to be Push. It's just peak emotions all around. We get Carlos sitting there by TK's hospital bed with his single tear, not knowing if TK would even want him there, in so much pain over the breakup, but in even more pain at the thought of losing TK forever. And then we get the joy of TK waking up, of "hey, baby, breathe," and then Carlos holding TK's hand, running his fingers through his hair and kissing his head just like he wanted to do the whole time!

Thanks for the asks!
What made me want to start a whump blog: I wanted to create a place to store all the things I found that gave me whumperflies to go back and read/look at when I felt like it, without connecting it to my main account. I also wanted somewhere to potentially post my own whump writing at some point, which I ended up doing rather quickly.
How I get inspiration for writing whump: Hahaha I wish I knew so I could control it better/do it at will. Basically, I get sporadic ideas from prompts or just things floating around in my head. Also from roleplays. The last major drabble I posted was a mix of a couple of those, where I was really mad at a certain whumper of mine in a roleplay for hurting one of my blorbos, and I decided to channel that into some revenge whump. (And yes, I know that the purpose of whump is to hurt one's blorbos. It does not stop me from being pissed at the characters responsible at times.)
A favorite whump trope: Besides rescue and protection like I mentioned in another post... whumpees' reactions to being whumped, especially when they're particularly emotive or obvious about it, are the things that make me want to scoop them up into a hug and get them out of there. Crying, whimpering, begging, curling up into a ball, trembling... all good shit (not for the whumpees, though... >:3).

2: Do you prefer illness whump or injury whump?
don't make me piiiiiiiiick. but i dont really have a preferance for either I like both. I fell down a rabbit hole a few days ago of delerious whumpees and fever whump which was chef's kiss but also injury is so fun too. i love injuries and especially the aftermath of them. As for writing i love both too but find sickfics slightly easier to write so I tend to do them.
10: When did you first realize you were into whump?
I've been into it unknowingly my whole life but only realised that 'whump' as a concept was a thing this year of all things. I have engaged in the community before (quite frequently actually) as whumpy stuff has always been an interest for me but i never had a name for it. Some of my earliest memories of consuming whump are as a really small kid. My favorite books, movies, tv shows etc were all quite whumpy (tmnt, power rangers, winx club etc) and I still love tmnt stuff, partly because of how whumpy it is (Weirdly I'm not a generally a fan of non-human whump tho, it has to be specific non-human characters for me)
17: When was the last time you got the whumperflies?
I get them all the time. I'm literally writing a story right now that is giving major whumperflies. I'll probably post some time today or tomorrow when I finish it! I write my own whump partially cause I know what makes me have whumperflies and I hope it gives you some too!
Thanks for the asks :)

70. Fading light
CW: institutionalised slavery, dehumanisation, box boy universe, pet whump
The edges of the world faded away into mist. Lydia passed beneath a stone arc, like the foundation of a bridge, her steps echoing.
The wet asphalt glistened in the light from the street lamps. Yellow leaves littered the road. Naked trees clawed their bare branches towards the overcast sky.
Suddenly, her parents were there.
“We moved far away so that we don’t have to see you too often.” Her mother said. Her father just shook his head.
“A Major in English, what good is that?” As one person, they turned away.
A group of girls she used to hang out with in high school laughed among each other, giving her pointed looks.
“If you really cared about the pets, you should have found out more about their past.” Andrew gave her a withering look. “You are just lazy and self-indulgent, playing with them like toys.”
“I’m getting tired of hanging out with you. Really, what do you have to offer? It isn’t scintillating conversation, that’s for sure.” Indira, dressed in an orange and violet salwar kurta, breezed past. Lydia turned with tears stinging her eyes, but the doctor was already gone.
“Darling, what use are you if you are not elegant and pretty?” Cecilia, leading Brutus and Absalom on two black leashes, laughed behind her well-manicured hand.
Some friends of hers from university just pushed their way past her without a second glance.
Carla walked by with Cassie.
“You are a burden to me.” She said, simply. Lydia could not keep down a sob, but before she could say anything, they disappeared into the dark.
And last, at the very end of the road, Cory, bloody, half-naked and kneeling, chained to metal bolts set into the asphalt. His eyes seemingly huge in a starved face.
Those intelligent grey eyes, she had been used to seeing them in fear, pain and worry, and increasingly in joy, laughter and affection. There were an expression in them that she had never seen before. Steely cold anger and deep contempt.
“This is your fault. If people like you hadn’t been willing to buy me, this would never have happened to me. I will never forgive you.”
She reached out for him, but the light faded fast and she was all alone on the wet road in the cold wind, all by herself.
*
When Lydia woke up, she felt disoriented. The sharp pain of grief in her chest dissipating only a little.
Quietly, she got up and walked down to the kitchen.
*
“Miss Lydia, c-can’t you s-sleep?” The pet’s timid steps came closer, a startled intake of breath. “A-are you c-crying?” Lydia quickly wiped away her tears.
“No,” she said, “I’m just fine, I’m not…” But then she met Coriander’s grey, concerned eyes and interrupted herself. She took a deep shivering breath. “I had a nightmare.” She admitted. “But I will be fine.”
“W-would y-you like a h-hug?” The pet continued very quietly. “T-this pet usually feels better after a hug.”
Lydia blinked away tears.
“Yes, Cory,” she said, “I would love a hug.”
And when the pet carefully wrapped his arms around her, she actually felt better.
She wasn’t alone.

Feels kinda weird to say it, but my whump awakening (as in, where I became aware of whump and that I liked it, started reading whump fic, etc) was this scene in the first season of the Voltron reboot where two Galrans (Galrans are evil aliens who at this point have conquered the majority of space) infiltrate the Castle of Lions (their main spaceship, where the lions that form Voltron are held). They hack one of the drones that Pidge had befriended and send it to blow up the Castle's power crystal. Lance is in the control room with Coran, where the crystal is held. It goes in there and explodes on the crystal. Coran is mostly fine, but Lance immediately falls to the floor unconscious and remains that way until the end of the next episode.
I think this scene altered my brain chemistry tbh. I love my whumpees passing out and people being concerned for them to this day. Watching it still gives me whumperflies to this day.
Oo, yeah, I remember that! That was some good stuff!
