Anyone want an arrangement of the Lighting of the Beacons by Howard Shore? I arranged it for string orchestra (violin 1 & 2, viola, cello, bass) and this includes the full score plus the seperate parts. I just decided I wanted to have the sheet music to play the violin part, but I no longer have a quartet or orchestra to play it with :( so you guys can have it for free. I also have arrangements for many other lotr songs for the violin, if anyone wants any.

it's really sad, actually:
the lord of the rings was made into three (really good) films, even though each book could have easily held three on its own - like nerdy people like me who love to nitpick on details notice (especially me who misses all my favourite scenes that had to be cut short for cinematic value or whatever).
but the hobbit, a single book, was really unnecessarily (and honestly really badly) expanded into three films - and there is so much included that never happened or is straight up ridiculous and doesn't feel like middle earth anymore At All.
while i totally understand the choices made about lotr (or most of them, stickler for details that i am) and love the films, i have absolutely no clue what they were thinking about the hobbit. why include characters and storylines that never existed? there is so much to work with already! besides the fact that it is a single book and sort of a prequel to lotr and not cut out to last for three films in the first place.

The Problem of Galadriel
There is a problem with Galadriel. It’s not with her actions in LOTR and It’s not with her as a person. The problem is prior the Fellowship arriving in Lothlorien to meet the Lord and Lady; she did not exist. Galadriel, as a character, was invented as Tolkien was writing his sequel to The Hobbit. He needed someone who was wise and powerful to help the Fellowship, and, more importantly, Frodo after the loss of Gandalf in Moria. So, he creates Galadriel and her husband Celeborn, to serve as the Lord and Lady of Lothlorien. We find out in The Fellowship of the Ring that not only is she quite powerful, but she also possesses one of the three elven rings of power. Nenya, The Ring of Adamant.
Therefore, to have this kind of power she must be an immensely important elf. This is where we run into our problem. Galadriel is this immensely powerful elf, one of the rulers of one of the last elven kingdoms still in Middle-Earth. However, neither she nor her husband, Celeborn, are mentioned at the Council of Elrond. They appeared as they were needed in the narrative. Then Tolkien spent the next nearly thirty years of his life trying to reconcile them with the rest of his legendarium. This resulted in the problem of having to rewrite much of what he wrote since 1914 concerning the First Age. This makes Galadriel's backstory inconsistent at best.
Tumblr media
There are essentially four different versions of these characters, first is in The Lord of the Rings where she originated. The second is in Appendix B that appeared in the Return of the King. Then her history is related in The Silmarillion and finally, two versions of her and Celeborn’s history that were published in Unfinished Tales. There are other tales that Christopher Tolkien later collected for his History of Middle-Earth series. We also get some lore on her in an unlikely place, the book of sheet music called The Road Goes Ever on by Donald Swann.
Tumblr media
Each of these four Galadriels tells us something different, and there are sometimes years between these character revisions. In brief, Tolkien changed his mind constantly on where he wanted her to originate from and her involvement in the events of the First and Second Age. She went from a Sindarin Elf to a Noldorian Elf. She also went from desiring lands and lordship to simply being a seeker of knowledge. She went from participating in The First Kinslaying at Alqualondë to defending the Teleri. Finally, Galadriel went from being barred entry to Valinor to simply choosing to linger in Middle-Earth. With each revision, Galadriel’s importance grew.
The creation of Galadriel for The Lord of the Rings created a 'problem' that spurred on countless revisions of many of Tolkien's oldest tales concerning Middle-Earth. If Tolkien had lived longer, it is very likely the stories we got in The Silmarillion would be considerably different from what we ended getting in 1977.
History of Galadriel (in brief and in order as Tolkien revised her):
In LOTR:FOTR she is a Sindarin Elf of Nargothrond
In Appendix B at the end of The Return of the King, she is now the sister of Finrod Felagund of Nargothrond, making her now a Noldorian Elf. Finrod notably saves Beren from Sauron. Her husband is kinsmen of Thingol of Doriath, the father of Luthien. Galadriel's daughter, Celebrian, is married to Elrond.
In Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn, her travels have bouncing as round Middle-Earth. She is distrustful of Annatar (Sauron), while the rest of the Noldor in Eregion are taken with him. A coup happens and she flees Eregion though Khazad-Dûm. She rules over Lothlorien before passing the lordship to her son. When he dies, she and Celeborn return to Lothlorien.
In Of The Rings of Power and the Third Age she is elevated to the status of mightiest and fairest elf that remained in Middle-Earth.
In The Silmarillion, Galadriel participates in Fëanor's rebellion, seeking to be a ruler of realm of her own. She is present at The First Kinslaying. She meets Celeborn in Doriath. She is also unwilling to return to Valinor with the other Noldor and lingered in Middle-Earth.
In The Road Goes Ever On, a sheet music book by Donald Swann, we learn that Galadriel is actually banned from returning to Valinor unless certain conditions are met. Implying she is not repentant enough to be allowed back in Valinor.
In The Shibboleth of Fëanor we learn that Galadriel can perceive people's mind and judge their heart. She sees Fëanor for what he is and dislikes him. She is not swayed by his rebellion and actively fights against his forces when they commit The First Kinslaying. She follows him to Middle-Earth out of revenge. It is also here where we find out that Fëanor was enamored with her silver-golden hair and asked for a tress. She wouldn't lend him a single hair. It is implied that her hair inspired Fëanor to make the Silmarils.
Some final notes in 1973, removed Galadriel even further from Fëanor's rebellion. She intended to go to Middle-Earth beforehand, but was barred by the Valar after Fëanor's rebellion. She meets Celeborn in Alqualondë this time while visiting her mother. She goes to Middle-Earth in despair of the violence of the Kinslaying.
Until Next Time! Namárië!

ABSOLUTELY saving up for a motorbike, don’t get me wrong he loves his van but a motorbike? he’d die for one
please for the love of god do not let this man cook, he’ll either end up burning the food, himself or the house/trailer down
don’t like bugs or insects? he’d 100% chase you around with one on a stick, laughing his ass off until you’re crying, in which he’ll immediately apologise and comfort you but will definitely do it again a few days later
if you’re not in Hellfire, he’ll chew your ear off about his next campaign,
same goes with music, whether you two have the same taste in music or not, he’ll talk to you about his favourite bands for hours if you’ll listen
if Wayne calls his by his full name or even just his first name, Edward, he knows he’s in deeeeep shit
this boy is a messy sleeper, you cannot convince me otherwise, he’ll be sprawled out all over the bed, drool dribbling down his chin, sheets tangled around his legs you, face smushed into the pillows; his hair an absolute birds nest
defo got a job at the auto repair shop during summer break after the school year ends, like cmon we’ve seen then book in his room
a bit of a sad one, but often seeks Wayne’s comfort and advice after a shitty day of being tormented at school, especially when he was in middle school
like we know he puts on a very charismatic and unbothered front but i think deep down sometimes it does get a bit much for him
has most definitely phoned the school pretending to be his uncle so he can skip for the day a couple times
has read the hobbit and lord of the rings books an ungodly amount of times, like this boy has so many lines committed to memory (and as a lotr/hobbit fan, this just makes me love him even more)
okay that’s all i can think of right now <3

Hello!
I came across your LOTR music scarf and it is *amazing*!!! I was wondering where you got the pattern. I’m dying to give it a shot myself. Thanks so much!
I made it myself! =D
I make a lot of my patterns in Excel, either by adding a background and colouring in the appropriate cells (which I did for the Lothlorien leaves), or by looking up a nonogram of a g key and copying it, and adding in the notes from sheet music. I find it quite zen honestly. If you have a picture you'd like patterned, hit me up! Give me an approximate size for your project, how many colours you're using, and a picture to work from, and if I have time I'll pattern it. This is what the finished LOTR sheet music pattern looks like:
Tumblr media
(sorry about the messy lines, I used those to mark where I'd left off a couple of times, and on the leaves to keep track of where I was)
If you want to give this one a shot yourself, cast on 2x41 double-knitting stitches (I use this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyOJrmzElqs&t=120s, but it's in Dutch) on a size 3 needle (or any other I guess, this was just the size I had on hand). Knit 5 rows as you're used to knitting with double knitting, and then start switching colours following the pattern.
Remember that the wrong side is upside down when you're knitting! Otherwise the bar will be mirrorred. This first comes into play for the G-key, the fourth row of the pattern, the colour switch happens around the second bar from the bottom, whereas on the wrong side it happens around the second bar from the top. This is especially complicated for the leaves, since it has a lot of switching between colours. TBH, if this is your first time double knitting, this may not be the best pattern to start with. Pick a (more-or-less) symmetrical shape first, like this dragon blankie, where the colours swap between right and wrong side.
Also, the LOTR scarf is a little thick for my liking. I'm currently working on two (cause why finish a project before starting a new one) new scarves with slightly fewer rows (2x29), and they seem more comfortably scarf-shaped. This is what the start of their patterns look like, and they should be easily adapted to any other sheet music you'd like to make. Shoot for about 250-300 columns, or 6-7 bars of music, for a good length. Feel free to shoot me another ask if you get stuck, or if anything was unclear
Tumblr media
Good luck, and happy crafting!

Music of the Shire
Here's a fun topic I know a bit about, since I researched it heavily for a music project in high school once. I think it's really fascinating, so that means I'm going to subject as many people as possible to an essay about it. Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A wide view picture of The Shire, from Lord of The Rings.)
I think just about everyone who's seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy can hum (or at least remember with a vague fondness) the main theme melody for the Shire/Hobbits. If you can't, well, here it is in its most plain form, for reference. This one melody is easily the most recognizable part of the score as a whole, which is incredibly impressive considering just how gargantuan the score is in both scale and musical richness.
Now, there's no doubt that the Shire Theme is beautiful - it has this wonderfully gentle rising/falling quality to it, as if the music itself were embodying the rolling hills of Hobbiton. But I think the reasons that it sticks with you so well after watching the trilogy go beyond the musical beauty of it, and into the absolutely genius ways that this one melody is thread throughout the three films, assuming a new musical/narrative context with each appearance.
These contexts are called settings, according to Doug Adams, the pre-eminent LOTR musicologist, and if I'm honest, I'm absolutely obsessed with them. The way that they're used to shape this one theme and turn it into something that defines an entire trilogy is incredibly fascinating to me, and has changed the way I think about film music. If this sounds interesting to you at all, then stick around and join me for a little dive into the world of the Shire and it's music.
(Warning: lots of music nerd stuff up ahead.)
Part 1: The Theme Itself
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Sheet music for the Shire Theme, with the first half highlighted a separate color from the second.)
Before we can start talking about settings, we need to define what the Shire Theme actually is. The music pictured here is taken directly from the song In Dreams, from the end-credits sequence of Fellowship, which I linked to before but will now link to again (Don't worry if you can't read musical notation, I still love you).
This is the closest we can get to the most basic form of the Shire Theme, without the extra ornamentations that are usually added in other contexts.
Now, the reason that I've highlighted the two halves separately is because these two are actually considered distinct themes: Shire A, and Shire B, or the verse and chorus of In Dreams, respectively. Shire A is the one you're probably most familiar with, appearing most often. But Shire B has its place too, and is just as relevant.
As you can see/hear, Shire A is more gentle and relaxing, with the 'hilly' style melody and lots of second/third intervals. Shire B, on the other hand, is more dramatic, with these soaring ascensions that really grab the audience and shout "LISTEN! I'M PRETTY!" directly into their ear.
Got all that? Brilliant.
Part 2: The Pensive & Rural Settings
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Frodo and Gandalf sitting on a cart together, talking.)
I'm going to kick off the setting discussion by talking about the two that you're probably most familiar with, because they dominate the majority of the early-trilogy Hobbiton scenes. In fact, if you pull up Concerning Hobbits off the soundtrack here, then you have a pretty good place to start when dissecting these two and the relationship between them, as they're intertwined throughout.
The Pensive Setting is the very first one you hear on that track, right after the little plucked-string opening (which, incidentally, is called the Outline Figure). The reason it's called that is because, generally, this setting is used to inspire a feeling of calmness, serenity, and affection toward the Shire. You can often pick it out because it's being played on a soothing instrument like strings, or in this case, a tin whistle, playing the Shire A melody.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Sheet music for the Pensive Setting of the Shire Theme.)
If you compare this to the basic version from In Dreams then you can see a pretty big difference - the rhythms are more free flowing, not particularly beholden to the beat and with plenty of extra notes added in-between for smoothness. You can still tell it's the same melody, though.
The Rural Setting of Shire A starts up right after -where the Pensive Setting gives a general sense of contentment with the Hobbits' way of life, the Rural Setting is more about Hobbiton itself and the folksy, lighthearted fun that takes place there in the early scenes. That's why, once Frodo leaves home, it isn't heard again until the end of the trilogy.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Two hobbits, looking very disappointed.)
(Unfortunately, I couldn't get proper sheet music for the Rural Setting. You can hear, it though.)
This setting is played on a fiddle here, and in fact is accompanied by a whole bunch of folk instruments that add to the lighthearted feeling, alongside the fun melodic variations that are included (syncopation, trills, etc.) that contribute to the fun atmosphere. Not too much else to say about this one, considering its short appearances.
If you keep listening to Concerning Hobbits, it becomes easier to pick out the changes between the two settings. For example, right after the fiddle section, some lush strings pick up the Pensive Setting again, but this time playing the Shire B version. Then the Rural Setting actually gets its own unique conclusion, separate from either version of the melody.
Next time you watch through the beginning of Fellowship, try pick out which setting is playing in a given scene! It's very fun.
Part 3: The Hymn Setting
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Frodo sitting under a tree, reading.)
This is where things really start to get interesting. The Hymn Setting is very important, because it's the one that makes you cry. In any situation where the hobbits, especially Sam and Frodo, are feeling homesick or mourning the loss of their simple lifestyle, then you'll probably hear the Hymn Setting.
If we jump back to In Dreams again, then you might notice that there's a series of chords playing underneath the melody, lasting two beats each. That's because these are the Hymn Chords, and I was LYING to you when I said In Dreams didn't have a setting (Okay, I didn't say that, but I implied it).
In actuality, In Dreams is practically one long instance of the Hymn Setting, but it still works as an example of the basic melody because the Hymn Setting doesn't have anything to do with the melody, only the accompanying harmony.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: The same sheet music of the Shire Theme from earlier, with added chords.)
These are the so-called Hymn Chords, named that because they are intended to evoke a chorale effect found in traditional Western religious music, according to Doug Adams. Now, if I wanted to, I would go into a long musicological analysis of why these chords make the melody sound more melancholic, but this post is long enough already, so I won't.
Just know that these things are everywhere in the most emotional scenes of the trilogy, like the ending of Fellowship, or "My friends, you bow to no-one," and I'm half-convinced these simple chords are responsible for a few swimming pools full of tears.
What makes the Hymn Chords even more interesting are their connection to Frodo, and a special variation on the melody, called...
PART 4: A Hobbit's Understanding
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A picture of Frodo crying.)
This one is special, because it's not so much a setting as a melodic variation on the Hymn Setting. That being said, it's very important, and worthy of its own section.
A Hobbit's Understanding is sort of an 'epiphany' theme, kept for whenever Frodo is confronted with some terrible situation that forces him to come to a certain realization (this is why I like to call it Frodo's Theme, as well.) Here are some examples:
When Bilbo talks to Frodo alone at his party, and the young hobbit gets some insight into a deeper pain in the old man.
In his soul-searching conversation with Gandalf in Moria - "I wish the Ring had never come to me..."
At the moment when Frodo recalls these words and decides to leave the Fellowship at Parth Galen (see image above).
When Sam follows Frodo anyway and he is forced to admit his need for companionship.
At the end of the Two Towers, when Sam gives his speech about the lasting good in the world.
You can hear it best here, in The Breaking of The Fellowship.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Sheet music of A Hobbit's Understanding.)
You can instantly recognize this melody by those three upward movements at the beginning (and the Hymn Chords underneath). In Shire B, which this example is based off of, there are only two upward movements. If you scroll back up to that original sheet music, you can see the foundation that this melody is based on, and the points that it differs.
The really effective part about this melody, for me, is how is mirrors the feeling of an epiphany. Those three rapid ascensions at the beginning are the realization itself, which goes on to slowly solidify in Frodo's mind as the melody itself descends back onto that oh-so-satisfying D note at the end. It's absolute magic.
Part 5: Conclusion
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Merry, Frodo, Sam, and Pippin standing, surrounded by bowing people.)
There are a few other minor melodies and settings that are used infrequently, but I'm satisfied with having discussed the main ones. I hope this has provided a bit of an insight into the wonderful world of leitmotifs, and added something to your next LOTR viewing.
Personally, I find the different setting and variations of the Shire Theme utterly fascinating. If you want to read more about it, follow the link posted below in the credits.
This was a pretty big post to make to kick-off this tumblr, and I'm not sure if I'll make one this big again, but we'll see. Thanks for reading all the way through, if you in fact did. Follow if you wanna see more stuff like this, and have a great day!
CREDITS
The organizational system used for the themes is borrowed from an old LOTR soundtrack blog called the Magpie's Nest, which no longer exists, but can be found on the Wayback Machine here. The author of this site based his system on that of Doug Adams and his brilliant book The Music of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, so credit is due to both of them.
The sheet music transcriptions used throughout come from an anonymous transcriber, and was published on the website of a fellow named Alcaeru, found here.

In my world, she made a pact with the werewolf Companions, through trials and hard battles much later she earns the title of Harbinger. She and Farkas bond deeper than the other wolves. Becoming soul bonded. Together they travel over all of Skyrim defeating foes and adopting stray pups along the way.
Romance song:
I Wont Say (im in love) with Susan Egan, Cheryl Freeman, LaChanze, Vanese Thomas, Lillias White, Disney version
Battle music (self explanatory):
Song of the Vikings (my mother told me) by Perly I Lotry
Over all vibe:
Ivar’s Revenge (danish viking music) by Danheim
🚬CROSS (red dead oc) 🚬
Cross is a gunslinger, broody old man that hides behind some toxic masculinity but he is severely traumatized™️ He has a rough start and deals with the bed he’s made from his poor choices. There’s really no telling if he could ever find peace within himself. He’s also in love with Grace.
Romance song:
pay no rent by Turnpike Troubadours
Hit man song:
Oh Darlin’ what have i done by the white buffalo
Over all vibe:
Bury me not on the prairie by Johnny cash
🌻Grace🌻
Grace is a middle aged rancher, had a lot of loss but is optimistic on keeping her family legend going. She found Cross hidden in her barn after he had ran in from bounty hunters/the law. She didn’t need his help but he was handy when bandits came around. They fall in love after a lengthy time.
Romance song:
Gas station flowers by Zandi Holup
Rancher montage:
Keep the Wolves Away by Uncle Lucius
Over all vibe:
Chewing on fire by Dayton Farley
⭐️Astreae (Lotr oc)⭐️
Oooooh i love this oc. She’s grown dear to me even more now that I’m revamping her as I learn about her. She’s an oc insert into Lord of the Rings to pair with Boromir, I should draw more of this lovely queen and the story i envision for her with Boromir. It’s tragedy and intense, i love their story.
Romance song: Home by Catie Turner
Random songs for vibes:
Queen of Peace by Florence and the machine
Eleanor Rigby by Cody Fry
Willow Tree March by The Paper Kites
The Flower Garden by Joe Hisaishi
Sing to me while I sleep by Sandy Sunday
Thanks for asking! ;o; this was really fun to dig through these oc’s playlists. Hopefully this helps tell a bit more about them, I’ll definitely include the titles if I ever get around to making a sheets for them lol if there’s an oc i missed that you wanted to know specifically about, just ask! :]

Wow dodged a bullet there, Hal Leonard's "legally sell your own sheet music arrangements" program apparently couldn't renew some rights on certain music and that included the LOTR soundtracks. Through sheer laziness, I hadn't done arrangements of those songs yet and would've been so pissed if I had because now they're apparently doing takedowns on music they couldn't renew.

Not tagging this besides personal since it really is but I finally found one of the guys I had a crush on in high school that Eddie/Joseph from “Stranger Things” reminded me of on Instagram!!! :D Posting behind a cut too since it’s long.
I haven’t seen him since a few years after we graduated but I’m so glad to see he’s doing well and he now lives in another town in our state which is why I haven’t seen him around town in years. He was one of the guitar boys I posted about before that joined choir so he could learn more about sightreading sheet music and work on his vocals, but he also ended up joining our musicals and he was such a good actor too at least by high school standards. He also was the one I posted about being the huge LOTR fan and was shocked that I loved it and “Buffy” too, that I grew up on classic rock and loved all genres of music, that my parents were original fans of his fav classic rock bands and have been to so many concerts and that my Mom knows how to play rhythm guitar, and he kept his T-Birds leather jacket from our “Grease” musical.
Looking back both my Mom and I are convinced he had a crush on me too but the timing was so off because I was in love with my school’s version of Steve Harrington and also one of the “smart girls” so he probably thought he had no chance and looking back I realize I easily could’ve had a boyfriend there as it never worked out with the Steve. LOL But I’m so happy to see he’s doing good, has his own lawn care business, and posted cute pics of his son he calls “the little prince”.It’s what I wished Eddie would’ve been able to do if his music aspirations didn’t work out.

Why haven't I ever played concerning Hobbits? Like I played flute for nine years in school and never got a lotr music book? What was I thinking?
My new mission (that probably won't actually happen lmao) is to re teach myself how to play the damn flute and acquire lotr sheet music and play that damn hobbit music.
