With a tone so gentle and thorough care, he eyes over the small soldier. Wasn't this more like an open invitation to keep her around? After all, ones who fought like her never backed from a challenge, especially when their prowess was being questioned by someone who did not even set foot in the battlefield. With this hypothesis in mind, he kept himself quiet afterwards, ready to observe the results. Trial and error would either prove or break his theory, after all.

Maybe his message wasn't as clear as he thought it had been. Sure, she looked as if she were hiding away, seeing as she was so small compared to everyone else, including him. But that wasn't the real reason for his words.

"[I was.]" He clicks on his device, seeing himself now exposed to whomever was roaming about, including the woman beside him. He takes a quick glance at her and continues to think to himself. Their opposite group had quite the array of people. None was quite like the other, each of them extremely unique, almost comically so.

I fear that "fire bending didn't come easy to zuko" and "zuko isn't a prodigy" (both true) has somehow snowballed into "zuko is a bad or at best average fire bender".... which simply isn't true, especially by the end of book 3

#it certainly doesn't help that pretty much the only other fire bender that Zuko's consistently contrasted with #is his extremely talented once in a lifetime level of a prodigy sister #but guys he's still very powerful #and I will bravely propose that #after seeing the dragons #and Zuko is no longer relying on his anger and rage to fuel his firebending #its not a coincidence that the next two battles that he has with Azula either #end with a stalemate (both Zuko and Azula use the same move on the airship and notably she's blown back further from it than he is!)#and then him winning (she's lost her stability while he's finally found his)#(side side note: I'm of the camp that Azula targeting Katara in the Agni Kai made Zuko the automatic victor because an Agni Kai is #(should be?)#between only the two partaking in it and Zuko WAS straight up wiping the floor with her until that very moment where she targeted Katara #which you know great play on Azula part she knows how to manipulate her brother cause once she released she was losing the Agni kai #Azula simply made the choice to get the throne via the line of succession lol)#ah well #atla #zuko

Pixie and Atom: The Implacable Ashes

The one Forged in Fire and the other Tempered in Gold; two casualties of war that, though very different in their approach and beliefs, still hold similarities that may end up uniting them for better or worse.

On Pixie's side I wanted to show her strength through all of the adversity she's been through. The allusion to her name and how it fit or identified her well because of her haircut and other defining features during younger days and the illusion of fragility she shows with her stature. She can fool others with ease and she has done so before, so much that she now hides that real self of hers deep within her -- cuts and bruises only covering surface-level of what she used to be. With Atom, I feel she'd be at odds. Atom is a person that doesn't try to pry on other people's lives unless necessary, a mission-driven person. As Pixie keeps things professional when she doesn't really know people, but is still polite, they'd probably get along well and, as time goes by, they could even be comrades in arms.

On Atom's side, I wanted to show parts that also identify him -- an elegant suit and pistol for defense. His defining features, the ones his handlers wanted to portray; elegance in violence. Just like her, his presence fools others to form their own conclusions, oftentimes meeting their demise if they falter once. His real-self, though, is so deep inside him that he can barely find it among the bruises and cuts, much like Pixie. With Pixie, I feel he would also be at odds. He could learn of a new perspective of the army and the people affected by it. If they ended up being comrades in arms, surely they'd be able to watch the battlefield burn together and learn from it, maybe try and become better -- try and heal the wounds that seem impenetrable. Maybe, they could both help each other find a way back home -- wherever that is for each.

I think these two have potential to learn from each other and be able to form a satisfying bond.
