I made a lesbian flag

I wanted to make my own lesbian flag for fun, and because I have complicated feelings on Emily Gwen. I don't intend to replace their flag but I felt like making one so here it is!

Since Emily's is already called the sunset lesbian flag, perhaps this could be the sunrise lesbian flag or dawn lesbian flag. Yeah I like that. Dawn lesbian flag.

Stripe meaning explanations:

1. Gender nonconformity: lesbian history is rich in gender nonconformity. This obviously includes butches and futches, as well as pronoun nonconforming lesbians, trans lesbians, and nonbinary or genderqueer lesbians, but it also includes all lesbians who simply see loving women as nonconformity to traditional roles, something it was seen as historically before it was more normalized

2. Queer love of women: no matter what lesbian definition you use, a lesbian's love of women is queer. Purple is a color often seen in QLW terms, and as such I chose it to represent our love of women

3. Femininity: whether you're a femme or a trans man lesbian who feels a connection to femininity and through his AGAB, the femininity stripe represents all lesbians who feel a whole or partial connection to femininity, or simply have a deep love for femininity and feminine people

4. Unity: despite the fact that the lesbian label has so many different ways to be experienced, we're all united by the fact that we're lesbians. We are a community, united together.

5. Lesbian history and diversity: the lesbian label has a lot of diversity in it. Some lesbians are women who exclusively love women, and some lesbians are bigender boygirls who have split attractions between loving all genders and loving feminine genders. This diversity is backed by the history of the lesbian community and label. But on top of that, this stripe also pays homage to the significance of lesbians in queer history, especially how lesbians played an important role during the AIDS crisis.

6. Masculinity and those tied to it: This stripe is for the butches, the he/him lesbians, the transmasc and trans man lesbians, the lesboys, and all the other lesbians who feel connected to masculinity.

7. Nonbinary Lesbians and NBLW/WLNB love: Nonbinary lesbians have always existed and continue to exist to this day. They are a beautiful part of the lesbian label, and both nonbinary lesbians and lesbians who love nonbinary people are highlighted with this stripe.

I tried to make a 5 stripe variation but it didn't look as nice. This flag is inclusive of anyone who considers themselves a lesbian. All lesbians belong under this flag, and all lesbians may use it, even if I don't personally align with all your beliefs.

Thank you, honey, you always know how to make a situation better.” you responded, smiling.

So you spent the day with Jill making the most of pride at home, baking cupcakes with sprinkles inside and out, some with different pride flags iced on top. You dressed in some comfortable clothing with your Agender pin attached to your top, with Jill sporting her transgender colored tie-dyed tank top and some high-waisted blue shorts. Pulling out some games, you sit and play rounds of Monopoly and 31 While snacking on the treats. “Ugh, how are you so good at these games,” You mutter, losing, once again, for the fourth time in a row. “It’s just luck!” Jill exclaims, taking the cards back from you and shuffling them once more. “How about we watch some of those movies now?” You asked, “Tired of getting your ass handed to you?” Jill replied. “Oh, hush your mouth!” You guffawed, standing up and putting the board game back into its box and proper place on the shelf, before making your way to the couch.

Jill stands up as well, walking towards the couch and plopping down beside you, putting an arm around your shoulder. She begins to scroll through the applications, navigating to the LGBT category. “Anything in particular catching your eye?” She asks, slowly flipping through the options. You ain’t paying much attention, too busy staring at her profile. Her short brown hair tucked behind her ear, beautiful blue eyes with a sparkle always in them, full lips formed into a slight smile. As the years progressed between you two, she began to become more comfortable with touch, from hardly holding hands, to now, always touching you in some way. Watching her become relaxed and feeling safe around you filled you with warmth. You knew it was hard to be open with what little details you had of her job, but being with Jill has truly been some of the best times you’ve had. Her cheerful demeanor, always willing to give a helping hand, a truly selfless person that you wouldn’t mind spending the rest of your life with.

“You sure you want to watch some movies, or just me?” You’re snapped back to the present with Jill staring at you, grinning. “Oh, good Lord!” You exclaim, blushing and looking away. Okay so I “made” a new gender apathetic/apagender flag because the one I found/we have was just kinda lacking for me?? Like it’s okay and I don’t dislike it, but I thought it needed something

So the current one, according to gender fandom wiki or whatever (https://gender.fandom.com/wiki/Gender_Apathetic), is by @pridearchive (idk why I can’t tag them but I also just don’t understand tumblr so oh well)

But anyway, I’m not a huge fan of the fact that a lot of the definition relies upon the usage of the word “lazy” a lot, because like, while it’s true that laziness and apathy are similar, they are not the same. I was confused for MONTHS as to why everyone around me cared so much about their gender, both cis and trans people, and I just didn’t. Like, I thought my dad might understand cause we talk about queer stuff all the time and he was like “???… but I am a man, that’s just a fact… are you saying there’s people who don’t care??” And that confused me more cause I was like “wait even cis people care that much about their gender expression??” Because for me, I thought that trans people really cared about their gender identity and expression because of the dysphoria they dealt with from being born as the opposite sex. So, to hear that cis people also have a strong sense of gender and really care about the way they present and are perceived threw me for a loop.

So I went down this rabbit hole for, as stated previously, MONTHS, just trying to figure out if anyone felt the way I did because I felt fucking crazy. No one else spoke about not caring about their gender identity, not caring if someone called them a guy or a girl or something in between. I found labels like Aporagender (“a gender identity that is neither masculine, feminine or inbetween the two but nonetheless involves a strong sense of gender; a term similar to maverique.” - https://en.pronouns.page/dictionary/terminology#aporagender) and genderfluid (“a gender that varies, or changes over time.” - https://gender.fandom.com/wiki/Genderfluid) and bigender (“a gender identity which can be literally translated as 'two genders' or 'double gender'.” - https://gender.fandom.com/wiki/Bigender) but none of them felt right, even if I liked their flags.

But then, out of frustration, I decided to google “what is it called when you don’t care about your gender” and gender apathetic popped up. And I read the description and I felt so… understood. I felt like, no matter how small the group was, I had finally found people who understood me and felt the way I did. And then, because I’m annoying and visual, I saw the flag… and I was just… feeling very… ehhh…

Like, the brown, purple/lavender/light blue, white, and gray on their own aren’t inherently bad, but something about it just felt bland and… nothing like the sense of relief I felt when discovering I wasn’t alone.

And then I clicked through onto the post about the meanings of each color and began to like it even less

But, I pushed forward, ignoring my dislike of the color arrangement and meanings behind them and sharing my newfound label/identity and flag with my friends. I finally felt like I had something I understood.

That is, until one night when I got bored. And I started searching for flag makers to see what was out there. I came across a Reddit post about a custom flag builder (https://www.reddit.com/r/lgbt/comments/ooz3tb/custom_pride_flag_builder/) which lead me to Team Ultima’s custom pride flag maker: https://www.teamultima.org/flag/

Needless to say, as an artist and someone who’s nitpicky about colors and designs, I was stoked to find something that allowed so much creative control! After messing around with it for a bit, I made this:

Now, I know it’s not really that different from the current flag. But, to me, this feels a lot more balanced and cohesive. With the one by pridearchive, the “light blue,” which we all know is just lavender tbh, was the only color that had a bright saturation besides the white. Our eyes are naturally drawn to it and this does not allow our eyes to flow along the flag and take it all in. We kinda see the purple and get stuck there. Not only that, because we expect white to be in the middle of pride flags (as well as Im sure a lot of other color theory reasons that I’m not knowledgeable enough to know of or explain), the flag felt top heavy and uneven, with no equivalent saturated color along the bottom. The flag was lacking horizontal symmetry and I think/hope I did a good job of bringing it to this flag without it feeling like it’s too much or too little.

With all that being said here are my/the new and improved color meanings:

Brown - The natural human desire to find a sense of belonging and community, even if said community is formed around having a label for not caring about labels. It can also represent the warmth and security felt by having a label that represents how you truly feel.

Light Blue - A feeling of tranquility and peace towards one’s gender identity and expression

White - The limitless void of possibilities in which one can express themselves

Lavender - The mixture of all genders, feminine, masculine, neither, and everything in between

Gray - Lack of gender stagnation, not caring if one’s gender presentation is not as simple as black or white

Anyway, I’ve never posted anything like this before so… lemme know if I’m totally doing it wrong and all my color meanings are terrible and way off base or whatever. I’m gonna make a separate post of just the flag and the color meanings and whatever so that people don’t have to read all my dumb backstory to get to the actual “redesign” 💅💅

Yes actually, a fictional character and I hate it. So I go by Jonas - kinda inspired by a character, but I just like the name.

2. when was the last time you cried?

I cry very rarely (guy problem), but I watched It's a Wonderful Life for the first time a few days ago and that shit had tears streaming down my face and everything.

3. do you have kids?

Haha, no

4. what sports do you play/have you played?

I was more of a band kid, but I played Soccer and Flag Football (the two footballs) both very briefly, but I 100% was just picking dandelions the whole time #gay - Got into weightlifting a few years ago

5. do you use sarcasm?

Never

6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

I never know what to say for this, I feel like it's different for every person - it's usually like how they carry themselves, their clothes, their voice; something distinctive that helps me remember them.

Brown? Light brown or hazel (like the kind where it's two-tone red/green)

8. scary movies or happy endings?

Depends on the mood, but I am always up to watch horror movies.

Hey Gina trans person here! I get what those other anons were saying but no one takes the women's bathroom in mfasr mv or the negligee hanging there as "confirmation" that Harry is trans. To most us it's just further hints that he could be trans. Just like we don't have "confirmation" that he's gay but fandom has picked up on the hints throughout the years. I miss Lorna's blog because she had a wonderful tag that dated back to at least 2013 with all the Harry gender hints he's left over the years. Again, nothing is ever confirmation but it's not wrong to assume based on the hints he repeatedly leaves. The trans flag colors weren't used on the Fine Line cover for nothing.

Yes!! That’s exactly what I was trying to say. He had the trans colors in this video, too… in the robe hanging in the background! I definitely agree there are hints.

I miss Lorna and her blog, too. 😩 her tag had something to do with Sasha, didn’t it? @metal-eye did make a pretty awesome gender masterpost though, in case you haven’t seen that.

Noodles with lots of veggies and nuts or a bowl of spaghetti!

A writer. In school I wrote endless stories about the most beautiful goose I'd seen in a field nearby. I named her Daisy. She was far prettier than the other boring white geese, with her brown stripes and busy pattern. It wasn't until years later that I read that the females are white and the males brown... I was ahead of my time writing about a trans goose.

Do you follow any sports? What team do you root for?

If you could be any animal what would you be and why?

Something with wings so I could fly with my head in the clouds 🥰

Which cast do you picture in the Homeward Bound universe? Id assumed it was tom holland’s peter because harley doesn’t exist in the other spidermen’s movies but I also know you’re a Garfield-Spidey fan and that Harry Osborn and Gwen haven’t been MCU’d—just out of curiosity!!

okay hi this is the first of my current EIGHT unanswered hb asks omg. i'm !!!!! actually shaking with excitement about the fact that i'm about to get to ramble SO MUCH about hb holy shit. okay. okay.

so, obviously harley is based off ty simpkins, but i kind of?? like i mean, yes ty literally plays harley lmao, but also i picture him SLIGHTLY differently in my head. like how he looks in endgame i feel is a different vibe than how ty looks irl. i don't know if that makes any sense at all but i can't explain it, it's just like. he looks like ty but to the left. that's harley in my head. i cannot describe it any other way.

hb peter is 100% tom's peter because homeward bound is 100% canon compliant up to no way home (except for some headcanons such as peter having an uncle ben but uncle ben dying when peter was still really little in order to not fuck with the spidey home trilogy being peter's origin story - there are some other headcanons too that i can't remember off the top of my head, but i tried to make all of them align with mcu as much as possible as to not fuck with canon)

for harry and gwen it's not a spoiler for the most part except for one thing is kinda spoilery but not really? it reveals something about one of their characters that has not been established in the fic yet so just to be safe i'm gonna tag this w the spoiler tag and put it under the cut

okay so i'll start with harry

so there's a lot of variations with harry - sometimes he has brown hair, sometimes reddish hair, usually blue eyes, though i love the idea of him having green eyes because. i mean. duh.

i didn't really think of fan casts for him specifically in hb, i haven't really gone in depth with his appearance in any of the chapters, but @alwaysonlineau made the actor from love, simon, nick robinson, the icon for harry's account and now i kind of can't picture anyone else lmao. nick has hazel eyes which can look greenish at times so i'm here for it. also i loved his acting in jurassic world and in love, simon so i think he could pull off harry pretty damn well.

also i love that nick was in jurassic world with ty lmao. the ages are off obviously, nick is 28 and literally played ty's older brother in that movie, but for the sake of a fan cast i think nick when he was early 20's looks very Harry Osborn to me. at least he feels very fitting for fanon harry.

if someone were to actually play harry in the mcu i don't know if he'd feel super fitting, i've seen people mention harrison osterfield for mcu harry which i could see. i also looked through a list of harry fan casts and david mazouz looks harry like to me a bit. charlie heaton was also listed which idk if he could pull harry off but looks-wise i could kind of see. asher angel. i know timothee chalamet's name has been tossed around a bunch and i mean i think he could do it but he doesn't look like harry to me lmao. they'd have to make his appearance work for it.

maybe charlie rowe, who i also saw listed as a fan cast. asa butterfield was on that list as well and i could see the mcu going that route too. but in homeward bound, i pretty much just envision nick.

as for gwen stacy!

so, i thought this before @alwaysonlineau came back, and i know i'm not the only one because i've seen quite a few posts on here and other sites saying the same thing, especially after across the spider-verse came out and gwen had the trans flag and coloring and such, but i really think that hunter schafer would be an INCREDIBLE gwen.

it hasn't been mentioned in the fic yet (mostly because i didn't think of this until i was already like halfway through the fic and then i didn't officially decide on it until across the spider-verse came out) but gwen is trans in homeward bound. it's gonna be made explicitly clear as soon as i can figure out a fitting reason for why it wouldn't have been mentioned so far - it feels as though, since the fic is peter's pov and he's never mentioned it, it should be that gwen hasn't told him so he doesn't know, which means finding out is going to have to be a thing. not like a huge thing but it's going to have to become a scene of some kind that establishes the fact that she's trans and then also addresses why she didn't tell him/any of them.

i haven't decided on how yet - it might be a super casual thing where she just never thought to mention it because it's just a part of who she is and she doesn't feel the need to tell people because she doesn't think it really matters (and also hunter schafer has stated that she passes as a cis woman i remember seeing an interview after euphoria season one where she was talking about it and how like yeah it's great to have trans inclusion and representation in euphoria but also she knows that she's white and passing and that's probably a big part of why she got the role, which basically i'm mentioning because if hunter were to play gwen then gwen would also be able to pass very easily as a cis woman as well). i might make it a bigger thing, like maybe she experienced something (some kind of transphobia) in the past that made her very wary about telling people and then by the time she wanted to tell them it had been a long time so she didn't know how, etc. etc. etc.

i'm queer but like i'm a cis lesbian not trans or nonbinary or anything, i do have multiple trans friends and i've seen a lot of posts and art and such about different lives and experiences trans people have had but i'm still cis, so if anyone who isn't cis has any input on what they'd like to see, please let me know. i don't want to approach the topic with a lack of sensitivity and i want to have trans rep in hb but if people want it to be a casual thing then that's what i'll do, if people want there to be more to her backstory then i'll do that instead.

but yeah, basically i can REALLY picture hunter as gwen, like some of her acting in euphoria i feel has some potential gwen energy to it (specific scenes, some displays of emotion that i could see gwen having, etc) but also this picture of hunter feels VERY gwen to me:

another possibility i could see is emma meyers, aka enid from wednesday. i think she's a great acctress and could encompass gwen's energy pretty well too, but my first pick would be hunter!

Hello! I am not good at explaining, but I'll try -- apologies if anything is unclear. I will also be putting this in tags, as I believe it is important information. However, I will also preface this by saying I do not use or need a screenreader and have no vision problems that affect how I see color (as long as I wear my glasses), so I likely do not fully understand what it is like to need a screenreader.

What I do is focus on how many stripes there are and if there are any variances in stripes, such as shape, stripe thickness, if they are wavy or not, etc. Let's use the trans flag as an example (adjusted so that the colors are not so bright. I am unsure if the colors would count as eyestrain, but looking at the colors hurt my eyes a little as I typed this up, so I muted them a bit):

I would first describe the amount of stripes, in this case: five. They are all of equal size, with no patterns, and are all just straight. So I would just say "A flag with five horizontal stripes" or "A five horizontal striped flag" -- taking into account the amount of stripes.

Secondly, I will describe the colors. I try to focus on what the color is, how saturated it is, if it's light or dark, or if it's a blend of any colors. I use the Artyclick color name finder site (I am not sure if tumblr allows links to outside sites to be in tags, so I'll play it safe and not link it here. However, it's the first result when you search up "Artyclick color name finder" or just "color name finder.")

This site shows what a color is named, similar names, its hue, and intensity. It's very good for when you're really stuck on how to describe a color. I recommend going for color names that are clear instead of obscure or abstract. For example... "light pink" is a better descriptor than "dust storm." Also, you do not have to go with exactly the same colors that ArtyClick generates. Some of the descriptions can be inaccurate at times, but it is a good tool to use if you're stuck on how to describe a color.

Another thing I do is looking at other flag IDs for reference if I need help with formatting or describing something. This is especially helpful if the flag is from a gender system, and even more so if the original coiner of the gender system has an image description for the flag template.

I'm not often involved in very hot take discourse, nor much discourse in general, but you can just ask (by ask or DM) if there's anything, or if you disagree with anything i post/reblog. Well thought out arguments are appreciated /genuine.

I'm sure I don't have to say, but I support queer rights. I am strongly against terfs & other radfems. I obviously support xenogender people. but I don't identify with any movement I'm aware of.

I guess I should say I have the somehow controversial opinion that trans men need liberation not just trans women (but don't disinterpret this, I cherish trans women and nonbinary people highly as well).

Queerness is about breaking away from gender norms/laws. It's about not performing gender like society says based on your (m/f, conforming) sex. About not fitting into the two boxes of cis perisex boy who likes girls and only girls romantically and sexually or cis perisex girl who likes boys and only boys romantically and sexually.

I'm very sex and kink positive. In case it needs to be said sex and kink requires enthusiastic (informed) consent and communication. no one is obligated to have sex, ever.

I, as many others hate jkr and HP for a diverse set of reasons (transphobia & anti-semitism especially). You can follow if you stopped being a fan. also DNI if you have HP url or similar or monetarily support the wizarding world and other stuff that support jkr.
