chinese reading notes:
my reading skill is funny (to me) because like. if reading sort of focusing on individual words, like when i read knowing i’m going to look words up (so reading intensively), it feels like i don’t know as much as compared with
when i’m reading extensively, particularly when i play audio (so i can’t stop or pause), when i comprehend things JUST FINE that if i read slower with word lookup i’d be ‘stumbling’.
i think part of this odd contradiction with reading skill, is when i read extensively like i must when audio is playing, i just take the context+hanzi i know+unknown-hanzi-radicals and then make a guess of any unknowns which is usually perfectly close to the real meaning. i have to make the guess instantly so i just rely on what i recognize. Like when i heard “effervescent” or “macabre” something in an english audiobook, i STILL as an adult am not sure on the exact definition, but based on how i heard it in the audiobook or when reading i can guess what it means good enough.
So like. When I’m reading chinese extensively, which listening alongside audio requires of me, i do the same process in my brain. i see the equivalent of “luminescent” and like with english i just guess based on what i’ve got instantly and move on. Which is a good skill frankly to be able to also do in chinese as in my other reading languages. But, when I slow myself down and MAKE myself look up words, i suddenly am no longer seeing sentences as a ‘whole’ and start using word lookup for lots of individual words i could have figured out from context. On the upside, this word lookup is likely helping increase my mental information of said words. On the downside, it slows me down a lot, and perhaps i should go back to my old rule of “only 5-10 word lookups per chapter” so i don’t pause so much unless its a word i actually could use direct full definition help for.
I’ve been reading dmbj 1, and of course intensively reading it with Readibu (like most things this month). And for the first 3 chapters i’d say that was useful, as dmbj has some genre-specific unknown words (miners lamp, shovels, tomb, bury, engraving, scroll, mummy etc) that were useful to know the Specific Definition for and then repeatedly look up and drill initially so I’d know them quickly. But now that I’m at chapter 11? I noticed that when I extensively read it with the audio playing, i got through the chapter faster and had no problem following the plot. Whereas I know when I extensively read chapter 10 i stopped a bunch to look up words, and now i know i was probably mostly looking up words i’m now familiar enough to grasp in context i was just leaning on word-lookup as a crutch.
Will i keep leaning on the crutch? Not sure. Like srs flashcards, or Listening Reading Method (when doing both steps 2 and 3), i think repeatedly looking up unknown and ‘foggy’ words as i read does do the repetitive-definition exposure that tends to get words learned quickly. So while repeated-word-lookup of words i’d learn eventually anyway through context slows down reading speed, it does probably allow me to pick up these words Faster than picking the words up only through extensive reading. (On the flipside though, if you’re also doing a lot of reading, a decent amount of extensive reading really really HELPS ones ability to comprehend full sentences whether u know what’s in them or not, so some extensive reading is always good).
I am trying to do a balance right now of extensive to intensive, so that I’m at least Sometimes picking up words the same way i did in english reading. I’m currently extensively reading 梦幻小公主 1, which is perfect for this. It feels a LOT like reading in middle school in english felt for me - lots of words i know, and lots of new fantasy/description words i don’t know but can guess really easily. I also needed to add some fantasy reading anyway - eventually i need to grasp horror (i already have a good vocab for this), crime (decent vocab but i need more police/legal vocab), supernatural (i already have good vocab), fantasy/xianxia (i know basic terms but need more), wuxia (i know basic but need more), and business (need a lot more) genre vocabulary. I’m also extensively reading 镇魂 while listening to the audiobook (who knows how long i’ll stick to it/if i’ll finish ToT), which is a good ‘harder’ novel for me to do other extensive reading in.
completely unrelated:
nothing like seeing japanese again to remind me how utterly grateful i am for how hanzi work. i learned during studying chinese that i’m actually quite an auditory learner. as in, i tend to remember sounds well and sounds help me remember things, audio learning materials seem to work well for me etc. So with hanzi, usually hanzi only have 1 pronunciation (or a couple in some particular cases which at least for the de/di have to do with grammar function), and that pronunciation usually is tied to a radical in the hanzi. Now that I’ve learned the basic hanzi and gotten farther, i realize how i learn a VAST majority of new hanzi is “oh those radicals! its pronounced X! now i’ll listen to the audio real quick, remember X=this word meaning, and the water radical hints its moisture cool got it!” I remember 搂, 握, 提,抬, 拉 this way - hand radical so it has to do with hand-related verb movements, the other half is the pinyin so i just remember oh lou=X meaning if i see it with a hand radical. Idk if i’m explaining well, but basically sound is a huge way i remember hanzi and their meaning. I see new hanzi and for me the radical/portion related to sound IS the sound ‘spelling’ to me. So its kind of like how i recognize english words but a bit different? like i see “lumi” in english and know that spelling means “light”. Well for hanzi i see the pronunciation portion and know okay i remember that spelling+hand radical = X word. So for me hanzi start looking like word-pieces, which are just as easy to start recognizing as they were in english.
Meanwhile, with japanese, the kanji are truly my weakest point to remember. Remembering the meanings is NOT hard, because so many meanings vaguely transfer from hanzi to kanji or are close enough i can relate the new japanese meaning to the kanji fairly easily. What is hard, is the pronunciation. So many kanji have several pronunciations, and i am used to relating a portion of pronunciation to the radical/portion of the character. with kanji i can’t do that, i might see the same ‘sound’ radical in 3 kanji but they aren’t pronounced the same! And of course i’ll see a SINGLE kanji, and on it’s own it will have a few pronunciations. i never realized my hurdle back when i started japanese years ago wasn’t actually kanji meaning remembering. My hurdle was actually “brain likes to associate ONE sound to one symbol” and kanji do not do that.
In my brain hanzi are a bit like english in that a portion of it (the sound portion) just is ‘spelling/pronunciation’ in my mind, and then the other portion is a hint of wtf the sound means (which in a way is nicer than english which does not always hint wtf the word means within the word). Kanji don’t seem to have any inherent “this is the pronunciation obviously” component, and i think for me that confuses the hell out of me. Which is even further complicated by the fact kanji change pronunciation representation depending on both words, and conjugations attached at the end.
Anyway, as a result of my brain getting hung up on kanji pronunciation: my japanese reading-only skills are evolving fairly well (thanks hanzi-near-cognate transfer ToT), and my listening-only skills improve fairly expectedly (yay). But the combination of being able to know the pronunciation of what i read? Is VERY limited to only words i know well through listening. Because i need to know the word SO well that i remember the pronunciation and just match it up to the “symbol kanji-conjugated hiragana” reading chunk. Hence my study has been heavily leaning toward listening to japanese for the past year. Because the stronger my listening foundation, the better my kanji pronunciation. But without the listening foundation in a word, the kanji words keep fucking confusing me - their meaning is easy enough to remember, but their pronunciation (and therefore the specific word they represent) is so hard for me to figure out.

i saw someone try and argue that sephardic jews in north africa are actually european because they originally came from iberia.. then i suppose most iberians are amazigh, by that logic lmao
(never ask an american to look at a person from algarve/andalusia/algeria/tunisia/etc and try to guess where they're from - they can't comprehend it's not about how one looks)
Sephardi means “Spanish”. The reason people think it’s a way to designate European Jews in North Africa is simply because that term is used to whitewash and deny the arabness of North African Jews. The term was coined to designated the Jewish people who left Spain after the Reconquista. Except while some of them were indeed of European decent a lot of them were also indigenous North Africans who came in Spain during Al Andalus as it was thriving and just went back to North Africa. The majority of the people called “Sephardi” today actually have no tie to those Jewish people who had to leave Spain.
That being said I personally stopped using Sephardic or even Mizrahi to talk about North African Jews after reading “When we were Arabs” by Massoud Hayoun. Those terms are a way to whitewash and deny the “arabness” of North African Jews so I won’t be using them.
To quote the book “Like my ancestors for as long as my family can remember, I am Arab. Of Jewish faith. I am not Sephardi or Mizrahi. Those are two fairly recent but popular polite-society terms for what I am. They are certainly better than slurs, but I won’t settle for them.” […] “In large part, I identify as Arab because reclaiming my place in a broader Arab world—an aspirational Arab world, in solidarity with itself—scares our foes who have, for so long, taught us to fight against ourselves. I am an Arab because that is the legacy I inherit from Daida and Oscar. It is how they remain, for me, immortal. My Arabness is cultural. It is African. My Arabness is Jewish. It is also retaliatory. I am Arab because it is what I and my parents have been told not to be, for generations, to stop us from living in solidarity with other Arabs.”
(Regarding Americans once I said I was Algerian a guy asked where it was and I said in Africa… he replied “oooooh you mean Nigeria that’s how it’s pronounced in English” and then asked if I was mixed cause I was clearly not black so how could I be African… that day I gave up on white Americans. Also there’s this girl born and raised in Algeria who went to study in the US and when her schoolmates realized she was Algerians they googled it and started romanticizing colonialism and calling her the “French girl” and honestly I do have the French citizenship but If I was called the French girl in that context I would punch the person in the face. White Americans would look at North Africans siblings and be so confused because of how different we can look.)

Almost a Dream
Jason awoke with a start, the senses he honed as a street kid warning him that something was wrong. It wasn’t a noticeable shift, something a more normal person wouldn’t notice, but to a person with his training it was glaringly obvious. The slight shift of the blankets, the dip of the bed…a quick peek confirmed what he already knew. There was someone else in his bed. The blue-eyed boy kept his eyes lightly shut, feeling the warm body next to him shift ever-so-slightly. Discreetly, he opened his eyes and peered at the figure that appeared next to him, gauging her threat level.
She was a smaller girl with blueish-black hair, likely of asian-descent, and a wiry-muscular frame not unlike Dick’s. Deciding that she was asleep, (therefore not much of an immediate threat), Jason went to move, planning on getting Bruce. He had only just begun to sit up when she pounced.
She gave no warning before lunging forward, giving Jason’s throat a quick jab that left him gasping for air. Taking advantage of the moment it took for him to catch his breath, the girl grasped his hair at the root and brought his head down on her knee. A telltale crack sounded throughout the room and internally, Jason groaned.
“Ahhh, Alfie’s not gonna be too happy about that.” His voice had a slight lisp, another sign pointing towards a broken nose. His assailant scrambled to get off the bed and backed towards the balcony, her hands quickly touching her ear lobes. She did not seem to like what she found, her face quickly settling into a scowl.
“I don't know who you are or what you want from me,” she began, settling into a (rather good) fighting stance. “And I don't care. I will be leaving and you will not stop me.”
Jason looked at her, grasping his nose that had begun to leak a small trail of blood.
“What the hell?” He wasn’t screaming but he sure wasn’t whispering.
“I’m not exactly sure how you do things in France, but I'm pretty sure most parents teach their children to not break into someone’s house, sleep next to them like a weirdo, and then break their nose!”
There was a chance that the bluenette couldn’t understand him(there was no shortage of immigrants in Gotham), but Jason hadn’t learned more than basic French yet. Technically, learning the more common languages was a part of his training as Robin, but he had kind of forgone those specific lessons. And why would he put in all that time and effort learning French when he could be reading more books from the Manor’s library?
She blinked at him. “What do you mean, I broke in? I apologize but sir, you are not pretty enough to pretend to be so stupid.”
The black-haired boy blinked right back. He may not know French but he does know an insult when he hears one, so he fires one back. “Well fuck you too.”
The girl scrutinized him, her expression screaming “Is that the best you can do?”
“Oh? You want to go? Fine. My middle finger salutes you and your assholeishness. Calling you an idiot would be an insult to those who truly worked hard for the title.”
She stuck her tongue out at him.
“There is a special place in hell for you, ya know that?”
The girl cocked an eyebrow. “I’m aware there is a special place in hell for me, it's called a throne. And those are bold words for someone who literally kidnapped me, but go off I guess.”
It didn’t take much more for the pair to dissolve into a screaming match, the bluenette yelling in French and what he thought was Cantoneese and Jason using more than a few of the Spanish phrases he had picked up from his dad and other folks on the street. Jason was in the middle of one of his more strongly worded combinations when the door slammed open, Bruce and Alfred standing in the doorway.
The both of them took a moment to examine the situation, Alfred accessing Jason for injuries while Bruce switched on the Batglare™. “Who are you, and how did you get here?”
The poor girl looked exasperated.
“I don’t know how I got here!! Last thing I remember was collapsing into bed and the next thing I know I wake up to the face of this,” she pointed at Jason, “creep who doesn’t even have the decency to talk to me! I keep on asking him how I got here and why he took me but he just won’t answer. He’s pretending that he doesn’t know French, but who in Paris doesn’t know French?!? I  mean, sure, there are immigrants, but who the hell would immigrate to Paris nowadays? What with Hawkmoth akkumatizing people day and night.”
She paused before flopping down on the floor, dejected. “Today was supposed to be perfect, the day I finally got my soul mark and got one step closer to finding my soulmate, but no, I just had to get kidnapped the night before my 16th birthday!” She put her face in her hands and her shoulders began to shake slightly.
Jason looked from the girl back to Alfred and Bruce. “Is she?” he mouthed, thoroughly bewildered. Bruce exactly as Jason felt, while Alfred’s face was twisted into something that resembled pity and understanding.
“Master Bruce, may I have a moment with you?” Bruce sighed and turned to leave. Not wanting to be left alone with the now sobbing girl, Jason followed.
Alfred handed Jason a handkerchief for his nose before he began. “Masters, this young girl has been through quite the ordeal and I will not have either of you using your vigilante intimidation tactics on her, understood?”
He waited until he got a nod from the two of them before continuing. “Good. You know, Master Jason, I read a very interesting book recently about Kate Goodwill and her studies on soulmates. And before you ask, Master Bruce, I do have somewhere I am going with this. The book was absolutely fascinating, the theories, the experiments, simply everything. However, the one thing that stood out to me the most was Dr. Goodwill’s research on the different types of soul bonds, specifically the one that she and her wife shared. Her research was kick-started because no one had heard of their type of soulbond before and it had caused quite the panic for both the young girls and their families.” He paused, making eye contact with Jason. “Their soulbond caused the younger of the pair to teleport into their soulmate’s bed in the middle of the night on their sixteenth birthday.”
•••
Marinette was not having a good day. First, Mlle. Bustier assigned her to work with Lila, Lila of all people, for the end of the semester project in summer school (which she was attending due to her absences as Ladybug and Lila was attending because she was constantly absent for “charity work”), then in the middle of the night, Hawkmoth sends out 1 and ½ akumas (long story), and now she wakes up to find that she was kidnapped by a psycho in her sleep? What the actual FUCK?!?! Where was Tikki’s luck when she needed it?
And ok, sure, she wasn’t necessarily proud of how she handled the situation, but she was under a lot of stress, ok! She woke up in a random kid’s bed with no earrings and no Tikki. And yeah, she probably could have done without antagonizing the boy, but it was so easy and fun to get him riled up! How was she to know that the yelling would bring scarier other people? Ok yeah scratch that she probably should have figured that out herself (I mean the boy obviously had money so it makes sense that he’d have more people around his house) but in her defense she was like, really tired.
She glanced at the closed door that the men had just exited, wiping a few stray tears from her face.
“If only I had Kaliki,” she mused.
But no matter. She already had the beginnings of an escape plan forming in her head. I’ll just need a handkerchief, a piece of twine, and maybe a hairpin to pick the lock on the balcony door, but then how would I get out of the property? A house with a room like this must have crazy security measures… She went on like this for a couple of minutes, formulating her plan before she checked out the window. Three stories up...could normal civilian Marinette survive that jump? I would transform, I still have my earrings, but without Tikki I can’t... She went on like this, thinking of different plans and contingencies. The bluenette was so lost in her head that she almost didn’t notice when the three re-entered the room.
“Miss,” the older man who looked like a butler began. “I deeply apologize for the earlier behaviour of Master Jason.” He gestured to the now apprehensive boy who gave her a little wave. “He has not yet learned French and had no way to comprehend the situation. I was able to hear both sides of the story, and I believe that there has been a large misunderstanding. You were under the impression that Master Jason kidnapped you, correct?” Marinette nodded, more than a little confused. “Master Jason was under the impression that you had snuck into his bedroom in the middle of the night.”
“So what are you suggesting, someone put me here without either of us knowing?” I swear to all things holy if this man accuses me of lying…
“I am getting there, Miss. I assume you are familiar with the soulmate story of Dr. Kate Goodwill?” Marinette nodded yet again.
The man took a deep breath. “I believe this is a similar situation, and that the two of you are soulmates..”
Her jaw dropped. “You mean I...we...what? N-no way.”
She racked her hands through her hair. She... she wouldn’t overlook something like that, right? You were supposed to feel a sense of belonging the first time you met your soulmate and she...had kind of felt that. The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. From a logical standpoint, it would explain so much! Why he spoke English, why Tikki wasn’t with her, why her earrings weren’t on… Her face turned crimson as she realized the full implications of the statement. She turned to face the newly named Jason.
“Oh Kwami I’m so sorry Jason! I didn’t mean to, I swear, I was just so surprised and kind of scared and oh Kwami, the first time I met my soulmate I broke his nose and called him every name that I knew,” she smacked herself on the head. “Only you Mari. Oh gosh I totally understand if you never want to talk to me again I’m probably the worst soulmate in existence I just-” Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the two adults leaving the room.
“You can speak English?” Jason exclaimed, looking equal parts amused and exasperated. “You spent this whole time yelling at me in French and Cantoneese and you can speak English? So much of this could have been avoided if you had just talked to me!”
Marinette gave a nervous chuckle. “Uhhhhh, surprise?”
At his incredulous look, she rushed to elaborate. “Well I thought we were still in Paris and no one has immigrated to Paris in literally two years so I thought that you knew French and the choice to speak English was conscious? Like maybe it was some weird interrogation tactic or something? I don’t know, I was just confused.”
“You thought I kidnapped you?” He whistled through his teeth. “Yeah, I can see why you reacted the way you did. No worries though, my nose isn’t too horribly fractured and I probably would have done the same thing.” They both chuckled.
He has a nice smile, Mari noted. (She wouldn’t know until much later, but Jason thought the same about her laugh.)
“I think we should start over.” Marinette held out her hand.
“Hi, I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng. I live in Paris, France, today is my birthday, and I think I’m your soulmate.”
Jason smirked, holding out his hand. “Hello Marinette Dupain-Cheng. I’m Jason Todd-Wayne and I think you are my soulmate too,”
They shook, and that was that.
The End.
Bonus:
Jason: You know, Ethiopia can wait for one more day.
Marinette: It can wait FOREVER.
Bonus 2:
Alfred: Would you like to stay for dinner?
Jason: Would you like to stay forever?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Techno and Dream did the fatal mistake of choosing French over Spanish and now they have to suffer the consequences together ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<----first part Enjoy~
“Please tell me that’s all of that…” Techno faceplanted into the book in front of him, Dream took his diary out of his backpack and started flipping through the pages, “Hold on… the text of Monday and the highlighted texts from page fifty to sixty-three- WE DID IT!” He exclaimed, Techno sighed in relief.
They had finished the reading and memorizing part of the homework, it was now ten pm and the others would come back soon, so Techno proposed a small break before getting back to do the second half of the test prep, yes there were small exercises on the textbook, but it was two or three of them for eleven pages, and after three hours of speaking and memorizing french words, Techno needed a break or he would have exploded.
“Some fresh air would be nice… “ Dream stretched his arms above his head, Techno got off his stool and grabbed two glasses, “we can go to the roof, there is a vent that shoots out hot air in a corner” he poured some water and gave one of the glasses to Dream, “We can go sit there for a while”.
They both gulped down the water in one shot, “Sounds good, lead the way”, and so he did, getting their shoes back on and almost forgetting the door keys, they walked up to the last floor and exited one to the roof.
Techno was at home here, he and his brothers passed lots of time on this roof: Phil came here for the peace and silence (not having a room made this his safe space), Wilbur to sing and play the guitar, Tommy came here to unwind while Techno to simply look at the stars, but all of them came up here to think, to organize their thoughts.
“Wow…” Dream jumped on one of the big metal pipes and looked at the scenery, “It’s so… pretty… “ Techno smiled.
The tall buildings that surrounded them emanated little to no light so you could see how bright the stars were tonight, it wasn’t a full moon, but that small slice of light in the sky was enough to see the outline of objects in the dark. ”Yeah…” Techno sat down, hugging his jacket a bit tighter.
Dream sat down next to him and yawned, Techno smiled again, “You’re pulling all-nighters too?” The other boy stared at him, blinking a few times, “Don’t think I didn’t notice the bags under your eyes deepening” Dream mouthed an “Oh” and turned the other way in embarrassment, “N-no no, no all-nighters, I just got back into speedrunning and the only time I do so is at night” he rubbed his hands together to warm them up and placed them into his pocket.
Techno knew how cold it was up there, but Dream didn’t, his green hoodie wasn’t enough, not that Techno was much warmer than him even with the jacket on.
“It’s getting kinda cold… follow me” Techno got up and walked on the metal vents until he reached a corner of the roof, the noise of a fan had gotten louder now, and Dream understood why when the pink-haired boy jumped in front of a grate and his hair and clothing started moving.
“We can stay here for a while” Techno brought up the cap of his hoodie and sat down, “It can be annoying if we stay in front of it for too long, but for a bit, it will do”
Dream mimicked the other boy and pulled his hoodie on before jumping into the stream of hot air.
Techno took off his glasses and looked up at the sky, without the lenses everything was pretty blurry, but that feeling of not being able to focus on anything made him relaxed: he didn’t have to worry about the world like this.
“Thank you for inviting me here, apart from the French homework everything is going great” Techno smirked, “Technically you came here for the homework, so that’s not good to hear” they laughed at the stupid joke and chatted a bit more until Dream sneezed. To avoid getting a cold, they went back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They caught the other Pandel brothers on the stairs, so when they entered home Techno and Dream moved their school work in Techno’s room, being that they only needed to do the exercises in the textbook, Techno didn’t need to shove everything on his desk to the floor since Dream was comfortable enough on Techno’s bed, but as time went by, Techno joined him.
It was around midnight now and they were laughing their asses off, looking at Minecraft and Among us memes. Their focus had left the room a long time ago and they both weren’t sure how Phil hadn’t woken up and checked up on them.
“Oh come on… we have five more exercises Techno” Dream pushed the other boy who was scrolling through Twitter, “I’m done with this language, I’ll do them tomorrow before the test” Dream laughed at how done Techno actually looked, “Fine fine… wanna play something?”
At the word “Play” Techno’s eyes light up, “Oh! Wait here, I’m grabbing something” he gestured at the other boy to stay silent before opening the door, Dream carefully closed both of their textbooks and placed the pens back into their respective pencil case.
When Techno came back, Dream excitement met his as he saw what he was holding, “I forgot Tommy had a switch!” Techno held up the Nintendo Switch like it was the holy grail to make the other boy laugh, “You know how to play Smash Bros right?” Dream nodded meanwhile Techno proceeded to set up the Switch on his monitor. “Phil bought us Steve, wanna bully nerds with the power of Minecraft?” Dream could do nothing but agree.
“So here is the plan” he started while they insta-locked Steve and searching for an opponent, “We protect each other while we mine, and we build, we just build, build until the limit and then drop on them with an anvil” Dream snickered at the powerful but toxic strat, “We could also stunt-minecart” Techno nodded as he was taking the thing seriously, “Yup… Oh! We can build to the side and camp them with the lava bucket!” Dream laughed at how toxic Techno’s strats were, but where is the fun if you can’t bully them?
After two hours of bullying, tea-pot laughs from Dream, and countless rage quits from the opponent they decided to stop and go to bed.
“Oh my god… that was too funny” Dream held his belly as he was still giggling at the bullying that they just committed, it was two in the morning and they had a test in five-six hours. Hopefully, the studying they did previously would be enough to carry them through the tiredness.
“We need to do that again someday” Techno placed his glasses down and turned the lights off, “Yeah, we do…” Dream was interrupted by a yawn to which Techno smiled and wished him a good night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So? How did the test go?” Skeppy asked as the two friends sat down at the same table of the previous day, the two looked like walking corpses and their constant yawning and deep bags under their eyes didn’t help, “I feel like I passed, and that’s all I care about” Dream explained and Techno nodded before placing his arms in front of him and letting his head rest, “You guys look like you fought a hoard of zombies last night jeez” Skeppy sipped on his juice.
“If Smash Bros nerds count as zombies, then yeah, we did” Dream smiled at the reference while Skeppy looked at them in confusion.
Rub a dub
Fandom: The Wayhaven Chronicles
Pairing: Nate x gender neutral detective
word count: 4.6k
read on ao3
It was late afternoon, judging by the warm rays of sunlight still coming through the high windows of the library where I had spent the whole day with Nate. The sunrays  were creating halos in which dust was slowly floating around, as if Time had slowed dramatically in the library to let us enjoy each other’s presence a bit longer.
This book-filled day had started with me telling the vampire about wanting to improve my Spanish, which we did at first. And to be fair, he was an excellent teacher. I could now see why Farah was so proud of him. But we had stopped long ago, favoring reading instead, although Nate had insisted on me reading a Spanish book. It will help you with your vocabulary, he said, flashing me a soft smile.
But Spanish was far from our minds in this instant.
At some point during our reading, Nate had switched positions and was now lying comfortably in my laps. I had discarded my book to the side as I couldn’t focus on what I was reading with him in such close proximity. So I listened to his gentle voice as he was reading some Spanish novel, the words flowing out like a river of the sweetest honey. I watched his face closely, looking at every micro expressions he would make, such as the slight twitch of his mouth when something amusing came on in the book or the gentle frown that would settle in between his eyebrows as something not as loving was happening.
The sunlight made his eyes come alive, and the emotions he held in them were much more visible. Their color reminded me of the dark, varnished, most definitely antique furniture he had here, in his small sanctuary. His glossy hair was a little messy from moving around in my lap and I just couldn’t help myself but start gently playing with it, which I could notice awoke an immediate reaction within him.
Nate’s whole body relaxed as I raked my fingers through his beautiful hair. His reading came to a stop but I only noticed because his previously closed eyes were now peering into my own, curiously, studying my features, just like I did with him a moment before, in silent wonder. His deep gaze swept over my face slowly, like he was memorizing every feature of my face in fear that I would disappear.
My body reacted before my mind could comprehend what it was doing. I reached out a hand towards his face slowly, careful not to burst the bubble we had put ourselves into. With a breath stuck in my throat, I leaned closer and followed closely what they were doing. His skin was so incredibly soft and warm making my lips tingle at the thought of kissing him there. I enjoyed how he seemed to melt into my touch, his expression so open and welcome, making me wonder about confessing my feelings for him. Surely he would know already but there’s something about actually saying those words out loud that makes it much more real.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when a warm hand took mine and the softest pair of lips kissed my palm. My train of thought crashed through the front of my head and disappeared outside and suddenly any rational thought looked like a far away dream. The mischievous glint in his eyes tells me he knows exactly how this affected me and that he is very much pleased with it, like he was counting on it.
In a futile attempt to regain my composure I spoke up, my voice almost cracking with every word. “Rebecca said most of these books belong to you, do you have any favorites?”
Nate’s eyes lit up, our bubble bursting as he immediately stood up. “I do! I have a lot of favorites actually!” The vampire started walking around the room excitedly, like a kid in a toy shop during Christmas season, meticulously pulling out books of the many shelves as if he knew exactly where each one would be. Disappearing for a moment, he kept on rambling, his voice sometimes barely audible as he was moving away through the rows of bookshelves. “Being able to read in multiple languages is an absolute gift when it comes to books, first of all, it just gives me more books to read, because a lot of foreign books aren’t being translated into English, except for classics, but mostly because those translations are awful!” When he reappeared, he was holding a pile of books taller than him, and I couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle at how cute and overjoyed Nate looked. He carefully set the wobbling pile down on the coffee table before sitting back on the sofa next to me.
The pile was composed of mostly classics; Songs of Innocence, Leaves of Grass, Songs and Sonnets and a couple more collections of poetry. Authors such as Jane Austen, Edgar Allan Poe or Ernest Hemingway. The Catcher in the Rye, Wuthering Heights, The picture of Dorian Grey, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and many more, but one in particular caught my attention.
“A book about burning books, really?” I said, holding up Fahrenheit 451. I could understand why it was one of his favorites as it was also one of mines but, seeing how much he cared for his books, I couldn’t help but tease him.
To my utmost surprise, I could spot a few more contemporary books in there too.
“Percy Jackson?”
He started scratching the back of his neck, as I was pulling the series towards me. He owned the most beautiful edition I had ever seen. “Well I wouldn’t say it’s a favorite quite yet, but if I had to be completely honest, I’ve really enjoyed them and the whole universe, and this guy is actually one of the few to get his myths right, so it’s really close to being a favorite if that makes sense.” He gave me a sheepish smile.
“I can’t really blame you on that. I’ve read them way too many times not to have them as part of my own favorites.” I admitted with a laugh.
He was now sorting the books by languages in different piles. One pile in particular caught my eye and I leaned forward to read the spines. Les faux-monnayeurs, L’Oeuvre, La Peste, Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d’éléphants, or Les Contemplations. I had to admit that seeing some of those titles had stirred in me a feeling I would have never expected: Nostalgia. Some of those books were part of my own collection, although mines did look a bit more worn out, as I had studied them back in High school, whereas Nate’s were in pristine condition, but some of them also held a special place in my heart. Just like the French language did.
“French books,” Nate said as he noticed where my focus had shifted.
His voice took me out of my trance. “You speak French?” I blurted out. “I mean, I shouldn’t be surprised because Farah did say you knew a lot of languages, but I never would’ve guessed French would be one of them.”
“Well…” his voice trailed off as he was pulling the pile closer to him. “French is actually one of my favorite languages…” He admitted almost in a whisper.
On hearing that, my mind quickly drifted away again and, ignoring the romantic thoughts that immediately started blinking in there like neon signs outside of a bar, I wondered if Farah had told him I was French.
I spent a couple minutes thinking of a way I could figure out if Farah had told him or not. A sheepish smile grew on my face as the answer was making its way into my mind. I was either the stupidest idiot or a genius.
“Will you teach me French?” I asked.
He looked at me, with a confused look. “You want me to teach you French?”
Oh god, Farah told him, I thought, but I still tried to play along with it and my smile turned into a smirk. “Of course! I’ve wanted to learn French for so long, and I bet you would be the perfect teacher!”
He seemed to think about it for a while and I couldn’t tell if it was because Farah had told him and he was wondering why I was lying, or if it was because he really didn’t know and was actually considering it. I chose to go with the latter when he agreed to teach me and asked if I knew any French words already.
“Well I do know some basic ones like ‘bonjour’, ‘mon ami’, ‘baguette’ and ‘croissant’”  I was trying so hard to fake my worst French accent, and Nate’s amused chuckle told me I was doing a good job. I tried to push my luck a bit more with my next move.
Trying to keep my voice as naive as possible, I asked: “There’s that one song I know that has some French in it but I don’t know what it means…”
“Tell me what it is and I’ll tell you!”
Trying to suppress a smile, I took a short breath. “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?”
Nate instantly choked on the tea he was sipping, almost spilling the whole cup on himself. He slowly put down the cup, his eyes wide and his cheeks beet red as I was trying to keep my lips tight not to let out a chuckle, but that didn’t quite work as I couldn’t help but smile at his expression.
The vampire cleared his throat “Well, it simply means that hmm…” He stopped for a bit, not sure where to look. Then his embarrassed gaze landed on me, and he managed to turn an even brighter shade of red. That’s when I bursted out laughing.
“Oh honey…” I let out in between giggles. “I know what it means already, I’m just messing with you!”
“You knew!? You knew and you didn’t tell me?!” He pointed an accusing finger in my direction which made me giggle even more. “You just sat there and basked in my embarrassment! You’re evil!"
My smile fell a bit as I saw a pout forming on his lips. “I know another word in French…” my voice trailed off as I tried to think of a way to comfort him. Once again faking my worst accent, I said: “Tu es très beau.”
His long lashes flickered quickly as he processed what I had just said. "Wh-what did you just say?” he stuttered.
I reached out to gently cup his cheek in my hand. “Oh Natey, French really does put you in one hell of a state…” I stated jokingly, but I had to admit that the effect French had on him was quite impressive, if all it took me to break him was a simple compliment. I took my hand off Nate’s cheek, the tips of my fingers slowly brushing against his jaw as I did.
But before I could fully pull away, Nate grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers together. “You’re very pretty too.”
My heart skipped a beat at his words, his voice sending a pleasant shiver down my spine. The way his eyes slowly glided over my face before finally setting onto mine. My breath hitched and immediately I was sucked into his deep gaze. It felt like I was drowning in the endless pool of brown that were his eyes, the warmth in them strangely making me feel at ease, like I had finally found my long lost home.
I slowly leaned closer and his gaze now rested on my lips. Giving him a small smile I brushed our noses together and leaned my forehead onto his. I heard him sigh in relief, almost as if me being away was physically painful for him. We stayed like that for a while, basking into each other’s presence and enjoying the quiet bubble we wrapped ourselves in.
___
A few hours later, after a heavy dinner that Nate had prepared for us, we were laying in the peaceful quiet of his room. The silence rarely broken by the other vampires living at the warehouse. I was laying in Nate’s arms, his usual dazzling smile plastered on his face as he was stroking my hair.
“Why do you love French so much?” The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I mean, it’s a rather difficult language to learn.”
“I know, but it’s still a beautiful language. I could talk for hours about how harmonious French sounds, but I’ll spare you that discussion.” He rolled over a little to face me. “It’s one of the first languages I’ve learned, and ever since, it has always had that resonance in me that most languages don’t have. It may sound a little silly, but I feel like it carries way more feelings than any other language I speak, and I’m not gonna lie…” A smirk had replaced his warm smile. He leaned closer, his breath tingling on my neck, to eventually whisper: “French is sexy.”
I almost choked on hearing that, rolling on my back and faking a cough to hide my mortified expression, but judging by the grin that Nate was giving me, my reaction was far from unnoticed. I couldn’t have possibly decipher if he was serious or just teasing me.
To spare myself further embarrassment, I quickly changed the subject and Nate was nothing less than eager to comply. Looked like he decided to have mercy on my poor soul. We talked until a word couldn’t come out of my mouth due to my tiredness and I fell asleep to the rhythm of Nate’s beating heart.
___
Nate was on his knees, crying for help as a blurred figure struck another blow. He barely had strength to lift his arms to protect his face. The chill of the rain was burning my face and seeping through my clothes as I tried to run towards him, but my legs gave in and I fell on my knees.
“Please stop! Stop hurting him!” I tried to yell but only a deformed wail came out of mouth. It was as if I was trapped in my own body. Unable to move. Unable to save him. My throat clenched as I tried to suppress a sob, but that didn’t keep the tears from rolling down my cheeks.
Nate took another punch, but this one seemed to be the last his bloody figure could take and I watched helpless as he collapsed on the floor. The aggressor was on him before he could even try to get up.
Now that the other vampire had slowed down, I could distinguish his features a bit more and a shiver ran down my spine as I managed to recognize Murphy.
I tried to get to Nate once again as he took a syringe out of his coat.
“Leave him alone!” Although desperate the words managed to come out of my mouth properly this time, but it barely got me a glance from Murphy whose sole focus was on Nate.
“It’s me you want! Take me! I’ll do whatever you want!” I pleaded. “But let him go… You don’t need him!”
This time it seemed like I had managed to catch the vampire’s attention. “You’re right detective… I don’t need him.” He said as he plunged the needle in Nate’s neck.
___
“Agh!” I woke with a start and immediately rolled over to search for Nate, but I was only met with cold sheets on the other side of the bed.
Panic seizing me, I fought to get out of the tangled sheets. “Nate?” I called in a whisper, afraid something would come out of the dark to attack me. I flinched with a shriek as the plushed rabbit from the Carnival fell at my feet, a folded piece of paper next to it.
Crouching on my knees, I grabbed both of the items. Immediately calming down as I recognized Nate’s fancy handwriting spread on the paper. “Went on a mission, will be back soon”, I read out loud. Clutching the little rabbit in my arms, I was surprised to notice that it smelled like Nate and without noticing it, I held it a bit tighter against my chest. A smile grew on my face as I read what was written inside the note.
“Nineteen Eighty-Four, page 124”. The vampire had drawn a little heart next to that sentence and I knew the exact line he was referring to.
“I love you too” I whispered. The plushed rabbit being the only witness of that sudden confession.
Our discussion from earlier this afternoon came back to my mind and the idea of confessing my love to him resurfaced.
I settled behind Nate’s mahogany desk, set the note and rabbit before me and grabbed some paper to finally put down in words how I felt towards the vampire.
___
After a couple of hours, the sun was slowly rising on the horizon, peaking weakly through the tree crown. I stretched as I contemplated my finished love declaration.
I folded the sheet of paper and slid it along with Nate’s note in the pocket of my coat. “Time to go back to sleep” I mumbled to myself as I grabbed the plushy.
___
It felt like a couple of minutes had passed when I was woken up again by my phone buzzing manically on the bedside table.
Thinking it was a phone call, I brought the phone to my ear, my eyes still half closed. “Hello?” The only answer I got was a buzz. Bringing the phone back in front of my face, blinking painfully at the bright light, I managed to decipher the last text Farah had sent me, lost in a sea of question marks and my name in caps.
“Didn’t you say you were French?”
“I am”
“Then why did Nate say he taught you French yesterday?”
Fear gripped me as I threw off the bed sheets and jolted up out of bed. Furiously typing, I ran out of the room, barely managing to stop myself from bumping into Adam.
“Detective? Is there something wrong?” He asked, actual worry in his voice.
“Not yet!” I answered already running away. Halfway through the corridor I came to a stop and turned around. Adam was still standing in front of Nate’s door, looking at me with a confused look on his face. “Adam?”
The leader slightly shook his head. “Yes?”
“Do you happen to know where Nate and Farah are?”
“The kitchen I think. Nate said he would cook breakfast for you, before you woke up.” He threw me a grin. “I guess his plan kind of failed.”
“Thanks Adam!” I answered, running off. I waved at him when I turned at the corner.
When I finally made it to the kitchen, I stopped before the door, taking a moment to catch my breath. I ran my hand over my hair and lifted my phone to check myself in the reflection on my screen. I plastered a calm smile of my face before pushing open the door to the kitchen.
Farah was sprawled over a chair, as was her habit, and Nate was cooking, his back turned to me. He hadn’t noticed my entrance yet. Glaring at Farah, I mouthed the words: “Did you tell him?” to which she answered with a shake of her head. I let out a sigh of relief and that’s when Nate turned around.
His smile immediately grew. I walked to him and casually grabbed a cup in the cupboard above his shoulder, reducing the space between us to almost nothing.
“Comment va l’homme le plus sexy du monde?” I asked, turning away to hide the grin on my face as he dropped the spoon he was holding. I didn’t give him time to reply and kissed his cheek.
[ How’s the sexiest man in the world doing? ]
Grabbing the kettle and pouring water in my cup as if nothing happened, I tried to remember what I had written down during the night. “Tu sais, il y a ce garçon, tu devrais le voir, il ressemble à un dieu Grec, qui a ce sourire magnifique et à qui je pense énormément ces derniers temps. D’ailleurs, ça fait plusieurs jours que j’essaie de trouver comment lui avouer ce que je ressens.”
[ You know, there is that guy, you should see him he looks like a Greek God, who has that dazzling smile and whom I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. As a matter of fact, I’ve been trying to find a way to tell him how I feel for a few days now. ]
I leaned against the counter now facing Farah. The young vampire was sitting on the edge of her seat, almost gripping the table so hard that I was afraid she might break it from excitement. She was staring at me with her mouth wide open. Morgan was also now sitting beside her, caring enough to have forgotten to lit up her cigarette and Adam was entering the room.
I returned my attention to Nate. “Et hier, comme par miracle, il m’annonce qu’il parle français. Alors depuis j’ai bien réfléchi à ce que je pourrais bien lui dire; j’y ai même passé toute la nuit. Maintenant, je pense avoir trouvé.”
[ And yesterday, miraculously, he announces that he speaks French. So, ever since, I’ve thought a lot about what I could possibly say to him; I’ve even thought about it all night. Now, I think I’ve finally found the answer. ]
I could hear Farah gasp and say something along the lines of “I love foreign movies, Morgan please grab the popcorn and Adam do the subtitles.” Glancing at them, I could see Adam rolling his eyes, but he still, reluctantly sat next to Farah, still trying to understand what was happening.
Nate was now a confused mess, his usual smile had been replaced by tomato red cheeks and the food in his pan was starting to burn. I turned off the gas and sat on the counter, pulling Nate in front of me to be face to face with him.
“Alors voilà, je pensais lui dire à quel point je le trouve mignon, et qu’à chaque fois qu’il sourit, mon coeur se met à battre la chamade; mais ça, je pense qu’il le sait déjà.” I smiled to the vampire.
[ So here goes, I was thinking of telling him how cute I think he is, and that every time he smiles, my heart starts to pound wildly; but I think he already knows that. ]
In the corner of my eye, I could see Adam, finally understanding what was happening, standing up and grabbing both Morgan and Farah by their collar and dragging them out of the kitchen. Adam had the biggest smile I’d ever seen him with plastered on his face as he closed the door.
I knew from the noise outside that the stern vampire was probably guarding the door as Farah was trying to listen through it.
Putting my hands on the waist of a still speechless Nate. I softened my voice, making my confession more intimate as the words flowed out of my mouth. “Je voulais aussi lui dire que depuis que j’étais enfant, j’avais toujours rêvé d’apprendre à danser la valse avec mon âme soeur et que s’il voulait bien, on pourrait peut-être apprendre à la danser tout les deux. Que j’aimerais beaucoup passer mes après-midi avec lui dans son endroit préféré, la bibliothèque à l’étage du dessous, et qu’on pourrait lire nos bouquins préférés ensemble.
[ I also wanted to tell him that ever since I was a kid, I had always dreamt of learning how to waltz with my soulmate and that if he was willing to, maybe we could learn how to waltz together. That I’d very much like to spend all my afternoons with him in his favorite place, the library downstairs, and that we could read our favorite books together. ]
My hand reached up to cup Nate’s cheek. Still a flustered mess, his confusion had gone away and a wide smile started to grow on his soft face. He leaned in the touch.
“Et je voulais aussi qu’il sache que s’il le fallait, pour gagner son coeur, je lui dédierai tous mes écrits. Que chacun des mots que j’écrirai, à partir d’aujourd’hui et jusqu’à la fin de ma vie, seraient pour lui, et lui seul. Maintenant, je sais très bien qu’il pourrait trouver mieux que moi, mais que s’il le voulait on pourrait se lancer. Parce que moi je pense que ça peut donner quelque chose de beau, parce qu’après tout…” I leaned closer, to whisper in his ear. “Je l’aime…” My voice trailed off as Nate’s hands to came to rest on my waist and that his head came to rest in the crook of my neck. I could feel his tears crashing on my skin.
[ And I also wanted him to know that if it was necessary, to win his heart, I’d dedicate all of my writings to him. That every single word I would write, from today until the day I die, would be dedicated to him, and him only. Now, I know fairly well that he could find someone better than me, but that if he was willing to we could try. Because I think it could end up being something beautiful, because after all… I love him. ]
“And what’s the name of this guy?” he eventually whispered.
“His name is Nathaniel Sewell, but he prefers Nate.”
After a few moments that actually felt like an eternity, Nate lifted me off the counter to pull me in a tight embrace, my arms instinctively wrapping around his neck. “Did you fake not knowing French?”
I nodded. “I’m French silly…”
“You are?!” He almost dropped me. “Sorry…” he said as he let me down on the counter again.
“I am. I was surprised to discover Farah hadn’t told you as soon as I told her to be honest.”
“Farah knew?”
“Yes, it came up when she visited me at the station last time. Sorry I didn’t tell you.” I gave him a sheepish smile “And I’m sorry I lied to you yesterday, but when I realized you had no idea, I thought it would perhaps be a good idea to confess like that…” I glance around the kitchen and let out a chuckle. “Well that’s not exactly how I had planned it, but I panicked when Farah texted me this morning, I was hoping it would be more romantic… Gosh I’m rambling…”
“I don’t mind…” he said as he leaned closer. Our lips were a couple centimeters apart, but he didn’t move closer, as if he was waiting for the permission to kiss me. I leaned forward and captured his lips and it seemed that right in this moment, time itself stopped. The kiss was everything I have hoped it would be. It set my whole being on fire, making my body tingle all over with happiness. His lips were the sweetest thing I had ever tasted in this world, making me addicted and never wanting to let go of him.
I pulled him closer by his belt loops, wanting, needing him to be closer. The kiss was so soft it made me feel like I was floating to the sky to gently lay on those fluffy clouds. It made me feel whole and happy. Nate made me happy.
And I hoped I made him happy too.
Cathy’s Relationships with the other Queens
DISCLAIMER:
I have written this around what Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss have created, it is not 100% realistic in what happened in history. It is not written around any of the actors, they are not their characters.
This can be read with platonic love, familial love or romantic love. Read it however you want. !They are not based on the actors! I cannot emphasize that enough!
Its a character study from my point of view, I may write some other fics about somethings I have mentioned here, I already have a plan for the Elizabeth Incident.
TW: Swear words and like some words that aren’t nice I guess?
Catherine of Aragon:
It’s a mother daughter relationship. They weren’t close in the past life since her father died early on in her life and her mother needed to be able to provide for them. Also because Catherine simply didn’t have time and she had other duties to do. Cathy heard a lot of stories about Aragon from her mother, Maud, Aragon’s lady in waiting. When Maud passed away, it killed her. But now in the reincarnation era, she could hear stories about Maud from Aragon. Besides that, they had helped each other a lot from the beginning.
Aragon helped Cathy when Cathy was facing writers block, nightmares, trauma, survivors guilt and many other things, she was a non judgmental figure who was there for her all the time, out of everyone, Cathy was probably the most open to Aragon. Cathy was a common sense filter for Aragon, when she needed to rant about her problems, when she needed another persons opinion, whenever she just needed a shoulder to cry on, Cathy was there for her. On quiet days, they can often be found together, just reading or softly discussing odd things. Aragon is teaching Cathy Latin, and its going well considering the fact that Cathy already knows Spanish, is learning French and German, and she is obsessed with William Shakespeares works. Cathy is helping Anna and Aragon improve their English.
Anne Boleyn:
Anne and Cathy had a lot in common. At the beginning, they barely acknowledged each others presence, they bonded when Kat ran away, and when Jane decided to take part in the annual prank war. Soon they were inseparable, they did everything together, they read together, ate together, analysed works of art and slept together (not that way, get your head out of the gutter) Cathy comforted Anne from nightmares and vice versa. That was before the Elizabeth incident. They don’t talk about it anymore. It took time for them to regain each others trust, but slowly they did. And their relationship regained the same level of closeness, maybe even closer. During prank wars, they are almost never allowed to work together, because of Anne’s intelligence partnered with Cathy’s common sense. They are a force to be reckoned with. Normally, Anne comes up with outlandish plans that go against all of science, and Cathy splits up the parts that wont work and fix them so they will. Anne then takes psychology in to hand and they both manipulate their targets right where they want them. Both of them are master manipulators, although Anne hates using it for evil.
Cathy’s lies saved her life once and now she only uses it for good and she guides Anne as well. Contrary to popular belief. Anne Boleyn is very intelligent and very well rounded in many aspects. She does crosswords daily and she works with Cathy on puzzles and riddles that are very hard to crack. When they went for a team bonding escape room, Cathy and Anne worked out every puzzle. Anne loves to learn and especially with Cathy since Cathy never judges and already knows Annes capability, they are often found watching how do they do it or how is it made together. Sciences are their favourite subjects to learn together although both of them are highly skilled in the arts. Anne and Cathy have a plan to make a comic book series someday, although both of them are master procrastinators. Anne is teaching Cathy french.
Jane Seymour:
Jane and Cathy had a lot of history, even without ever having met in their past lives. They both died the same ways and Cathy married Thomas Seymour, Jane’s brother. So they were sister in laws and married to the same guy. A bit awkward to talk about. They didn’t ignore each other but they weren’t fighting to spend time with each other. They got so bad that when they began to work on the musical, Cathy, the resident writer. Sat down with everyone individually to get their stories and they would work together to figure out which parts to keep in the musical and which to cut out, for a variety of reasons. But they avoided the conversation for months until the final deadline was approaching and they had nothing written down for Jane’s part.
Catherine (Aragon) took things into her own hands and forced both of them to sit together and speak, she was there to make sure they stayed but once both of them broke down, she left them to talk. They both broke and started crying, Cathy and Jane had a talk and settled their differences. Now they have a sibling relationship, Cathy protects Jane and vice versa. Jane is often found dragging Cathy from her laptop and forcing her to sleep and cutting her off from coffee when she was close to a caffeine overdose. Cathy had overdosed several times, and every time, Jane had been by her side when she was given activated charcoal and was puking her guts out. Cathy was by Janes side when Jane regained bad memories and had panic attacks from mild fevers and sickness. Jane was terrible when anyone in the house was sick, so if she got sick. It was an all hands on deck situation to calm her and help her rest.
Anna of Cleves:
Anna and Cathy were surprisingly close, they met several times in their past lives, but it was much more formal then. Now they are frequently called the chill squad, they watch from the back seat as shit goes down. Aragon and Jane are the mum squad, Kat and Anne are the beheaded cousins and Anna and Cathy are the chill squad. Anna made witty comments as they watched Anne do something stupid and Kat laughed, and Cathy responded with comebacks as they watch Jane and Aragon yell at them. Anna and Cathy tend to be the laid back ones, and although they seem calm, if you mess with any of the queens, Anna and Cathy are the ones that respond the hardest. Anna has a short temper and is likely to want to yell until her voice is hoarse, which is horrifying and sure to scar anyone, however, Cathy usually comes up with a clever plan that costs the person more than their mental health. Likely their jobs or their marriage. Nothing too extreme.
They also had their sensitive times. Anna had crippling self esteem issues. What Henry said and did in the past life, may not have seemed to hurt her, but it did; it hurt her bad and she felt awful. While she hid it. Cathy could see through her facade. And broke her down, just so they could rebuild, stronger than ever before. Cathy also had problems with survivors guilt, and who better to help her than another person in the same situation also with survivors guilt. They spent hours talking about stuff they could have done to help others. They ranted to each other, they yelled at each other, they cried to each other. They fought each other as coping mechanisms. Until Aragon found out. Aragon put a stop at those unhealthy coping mechanisms and one day all three of them made a trip to a gym. Aragon told them that they were going to learn boxing. It confused them but they agreed. They took boxing classes for 1 hour and 30 minutes each week and in a year, they were pretty well skilled. Now Cathy and Anna, when they feel overwhelmed by anything. Instead of taking it out on each other, they box fair and square. Cathy and Anna are best friends and can be seen in the gym practicing hard, or on the roof, stargazing and chilling. Cathy loves to learn new things and she spent hours with Anna just learning about Germany and German culture, it helped Anna relieve burden as well. Anna is teaching Cathy German now and Cathy is helping Anna improve her English.
Katherine Howard:
Cathy and Kat were probably the closest from when they first met. In their first lives, Cathy met both Katherine Howard and Anna of Cleves when she was in Mary I’s household. Cathy is constantly by Kat’s side whenever she needs it. She is the only one who is allowed to call Kat kid. It used to be term of endearment but when Cathy accidentally called her kid, Kat felt safe. They have a sibling relationship where Cathy is the older over protective sister and Kat is the innocent, naive but scarred younger sister. Cathy is the kindest towards Kat than anyone else. She sort of stands behind Kat as Kat does some silly stuff looking intimidating and scaring anyone who would dare to mess with Kat. Kat is oblivious to all of it. Kat generally goes to Anne or Jane for anything to do with nightmares but Cathy is always ready to help her out. Often, neither of them get sleep so they have a Disney movie marathon until one of them fall asleep.
Kat persuades Cathy away from work using cuddles and her puppy dog eyes. Often times at night when Kat can’t sleep she just enters Cathy’s room and watches her work. Those times Cathy also goes to sleep. Jane and Aragon’s secret weapon when they can’t get her off of her laptop and Anna can’t force her into her bed, is Kat. Cathy cannot say no to Kat. Anne became overly protective of Kat and refused to let her near Cathy during the Elizabeth incident, but Kat broke out of her grip and everyone made up. To this day, whenever anybody goes at Kat, calling her a sl*t or a wh*re, their life will be ruined by Cathy, as much as Cathy would love to deck them. She knows how to ruin somebody’s life by a single phone call. Although Cathy was extremely short, her glare could paralyse a grown man.
Imagine Wolfgang trying to learn English to speak his vows to you on your wedding day.
This is a part two to a extended imagine I did.
Tumblr media
You hated this.
Wolf and you had agreed not to see each other until his flight to Chicago where he was set to touchdown for your wedding. It sounded easy at first, but as a sensate.. you couldn’t do it. You had to stay on blockers for the first week just to obey the rules you both had set out. It was the night you caved and made your very first phone call to him that you realized that it was because of your sensate connection that you understood him. Yet the phone only had very clear German dialect which left you confused but comforted in the sound of his voice.
After some practice, you learned separation without blockers and every night, a different person in his cluster would call you over the phone and translate between you and Wolf how you felt. You hated this. You wanted to hear him say I love you so you’d occasionally call, he’d know why, and he’d say it fluently in German.
“He says he misses you.” Nomi smiles fondly beside you on your bed. She had physically flown out to be with you for the final moments up until your wedding day and you were grateful but you were also envious. “He says that, he’s impressed you two stayed apart without blockers this long but—“ she smirked. “He says you know what he’s thinking about right now.”
“Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow is the day.” Nomi smiled. Nomi was visiting with your fiancé and Gods did you miss him.
“Will you... tell him I love him and I miss his voice and his arms.” Nomi frowned. “What?” You were alarmed. Why was she frowning at your feelings?
“He made a lewd face and licked his lips.” You knew Wolfie couldn’t see or hear you but you could almost vividly see his hands sinking into his belt loops. The way his dark smirk promising to make you scream would melt you to liquid...
“Tell her I’m picturing her in her wedding dress.” Wolf insisted to Nomi, trapped in the airport of Berlin, sitting beside Lito who was physically asleep on his shoulder.
“You haven’t even seen it.” Nomi said aloud.
“Seen what?” You hated being left out.
“I don’t have to.” Wolf smiled softly at Nomi. He wished he could convey to you what he couldn’t control. The overwhelming thought that in twenty four hours, you would be married, buried in each other’s arms, making love as a married couple.
“We should probably stop and let you get back to your surprise before you accidentally visit and ruin everything.”  Nomi said, fighting the urge to roll her eyes.
“I miss him.” You repeated but sighed as you squeezed Nomi’s hand before you took your last blocker and drifted off.
//
The day was coming and when you walked into the church, warmth overflowed you when you finally saw the rest of the faces of Wolfgang’s cluster. While Nomi had flown in early to connect with you and ease your nerves, you’d never met any of the sensates outside of your own cluster who were undoubtedly physically tending to Wolfgang.
“Mon coeur, ayeee.” Felix rushed up to you and placed his hands to your face before speaking a slew of German words.
“He thinks I’m French.” You beamed behind him at Will Gnorski, who you had recalled talking to over the phone and even perhaps running into in Chicago-- unknowingly of course.
“He does. He’s ah..” he scratched the back of his head. “Been practicing that all morning. Felix.” Felix’s eyes searched you once more before he turned around and Will began to speak broken German to the man.
“Jesus, did all of you learn German for this?” You looked at the others. Sun smiled softly before she placed her hands in yours.
“Most of us learned English to say— congratulations.” You nearly cried before you hugged her. Lito patted your hair in a wordless and Riley hugged you tightly.  Capheous smiled as he squeezed your shoulder and you kissed his cheek. It’s as if you were just reconnecting with old friends you’ve known your whole life.
Finally, your eyes set on Kala who was intimidatingly beautiful in person.
“Hi.” You smiled as you gave her a polite wave. You fought to speak the greeting you had learned in Hindi, but your tongue struggled over the syllables and you were suddenly embarrassed. Linguistics was not your strong suit.
“It’s okay. I speak English too. And I am very happy for you, no need to be nervous!” She hugged you and you felt relieved. The entire cluster was so welcoming to you. All your anxieties melted away as you hugged her back and the entire group enveloped you in love.
//
The music began and you struggled with nervousness. Suddenly, you felt drawn to the door in front of you. You placed your fingers against it and took a deep breath.
“Are you there?”
“I’m with you, love.” Wolfgang said from the other end and you smiled softly.
“No matter what you say up there, I’m gonna say I do.”
“I don’t doubt it. I’m sweating bullets right now looking like a mad man muttering to myself. Still haven’t mastered the art of being able to speak to you in my head..”
“I’m sure if the cluster knew we were conspiring like this, we’d be dead.” You laughed. “Though I’m sure they all know.”
You looked over your shoulder to see Sun smiling back at you with a nod.
“I’m ready for you.” Wolfgang Murmured and you opened the door, taking Sam, a member of your own cluster’s hand into your own as he, who was like a brother to you began to walk you toward the chapel doors. Slowly, but surely, you made your journey, feeling presences beside you grow stronger as both clusters were walking in sensed synchronicity beside you. Kala looped her arm around yours and smiled reassuringly as you took a deep breath and entered the beautiful church.
Your eyes met his immediately and he blinked several times before Felix shook his shoulders. Suddenly, it was just you standing at the edge as Sam disappeared from your side though his body was at its rightful place beside Capheous in the groomsman line. You finally were physically face to face with the love of your life.
Wolfgang came down and took your hands, guiding you back to the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen.” Lito announced and cleared his throat. “We are gathered physically here today to celebrate something truly beautiful. No world, no man, and no woman can break the bond you feel when you first sense you’ve met the love of your life.”
You felt Wolf’s arms envelope you as you stared into his eyes. He feels you clutch him tightly in an embrace that says finally. His smile is faint as both of you release the sensation and simply live in the moment lost in the eyes of your lover.
“Wolfie.” Lito hissed and Wolfgang looked over. He quickly cleared his throat and began speaking to the audience in German. Maybe he was nervous and didn’t want to look at you. Maybe he knew you couldn’t understand him. In that moment, no matter the reason you were embarrassed at your inability to learn languages fast enough. You looked back at Riley and Nomi who gave you a reassuring smile.
In a moment, Wolfgang was standing in front of you again, still speaking in his native tongue.
“With that, I say..” he paused and frowned for a second. “Hello love.” He said carefully. Your mouth dropped open. He was speaking English. Out loud. Not just in your mind’s eye. “You are very precious to me. So for weeks, I’ve learned day in and day out how to speak American so that I could tell you how much I love you without help.”
He lifted an eyebrow and you nodded tearfully when you realized he was trying to make sure he said his words properly.
“I have loved you since the day I met you.. albeit this is the first time we have physically met.” He smiled amused at you. “Even the ring you wore until today was something we both sensed but never felt.” He slowly turned to Felix who frowned. Wolfgang whispered a few words in German which awarded him a response of “ah!” before he turned back to you, a beautiful ring in hand.  “This diamond is not like any other diamond I’ve held in my hands. It was cut in Berlin and shined in Kenya, it was protected in San Francisco and praised to Ganesh. It was traveled to Chicago from Seoul and has been gripped for protection through a bachelorette party by a Spanish man.” He laughed. “Now I want you to have it for—“ he paused and smiled as he said the next word in German and Felix leapt toward you,  nearly knocking over Wolfgang with excitement. “ETERNITY IN LOVE!!” Felix cheered in English and you laughed remembering the many times Felix would burst into the room during your steamy sensed moments with Wolfgang, instantly recognizing that he’d interrupted. It was only fitting he had a place in your vows.
“I want to say to you in your language for the first time out loud...” Wolf placed the ring on your finger. “I love you, baby. For eternity.”
“Ich liebe dich” (I love you) you breathed out and his eyes widened. “ich mache, Meine lebe. (I do, my love) ” You paused for a second, trying to recall the word you’d studied religiously. “Fur immer(For ever)?” You frowned as if that wasn’t right.
“Fur immer?” He replied in shock. His eyes searched yours as he took your hands and clutched them tightly.
“For eternity.” You promised and he rushed forward and kissed you.
“Does that mean I do?” Lito frowned. “Did any of that mean that they do? Somebody help me, please. What is going on?” Lito hissed.
“They said forever and eternity.” Kala sniffled and smiled warmly.
“I love you.” Wolfgang repeated
“I love you. I’m yours. I’m yours.” You practically begged and you two kissed again and again. Lito smiled and Capheous called out—
“There’s still rest of the ceremony between you two, eh?” You snapped out of it when you realized you’d kissed before your own vows.
“Fuck it.” Lito shrugged and smiled at you. “Wolfgang, kiss her like never before. THEY ARE MARRIED!” He clapped and the crowd gave a standing ovation as Wolfgang hauled you up into his arms and kissed you passionately.
Since spraining my ankle I have had to work in the back room of the office. Its not bad. I'm well ahead on my work and I'm able to complete it in my own time at my own pace. Great system. However. I have no concept of time.
I listen to bells ringing with no purpose. Teachers bring me assignments at points convenient to them with no regard for the designated fifty minute slot of time intended for their work. I do pre call work before theology, though theology is my first class of the day. I write stories during classes in which I would normally never let my brain wander from my assignments
Periods mean nothing. I sit for hours after finishing all of the work I've been assigned in an hour because our time is frankly wasted by talking and raising hands and busy work and examples that only confuse me. I sit for hours with nothing to do.
I read books. I've read nearly six in the past five days. I play on my phone, stashing it away when I hear the vice principal coming to check on me. I stare at walls and let my mind wander the same as I usually only do in the shower. Pondering things like why there is so much graffiti praising a name I cannot read around the city
I tap my foot and wonder if I'm the only person on the property anymore because I've heard neither voice nor step for what feels like days. I feel sure I am going mad. I pop my knuckles constantly to break the silence and to give myself something to do.
The air conditioning functions as most do here in the south. While the weather outside scorched the earth, the AC burns me in cold. My fingers feel practically numb so I constantly move them. I imagine play in nng piano at concerts, though my actual skill ends at playing a C scale.
I can't even hear the secretary typing anymore. The office is technically underground, the school being built on an incline, and my only view outside is a window the size of a ceiling tile so heavily frosted, a bare ass placed against it would remain censored. It is high up in an alcove. The same alcove the AC unit site on. All I can see through it is the pale gray of clouds, and sometimes a murky pale blue. The shadows of the men who tend to the grass and flora on campus ghost by on wednesdays, but they pay my window no mind
I've already almost filled my newest note book completely with short stories. All abstract and mindless as a raving mad womans thoughts tend to be.
When teachers and parents and students stop by to speak to the secretary, I feel like a ghost. I hear greetings and polite laughter and inquisitions after sons and husbands and new babies. Some teacher said something about having prom on a river boat. It sounds interesting. Another complaints that her students always forget their books, and don't order them soon enough before the start of the year. I don't tell her its the schools own fault for not releasing the book list until three weeks before the start of school, and then sending out a corrected list a week later so that every student is scrambling to get their books and emailing about correcting rushed and incorrect schedules so none is actually able to order the books they need until the week before school starts. And then we get to class and learn another corrected book list was sent out three days earlier with even more books we need.
My favorite is the French teacher. I took her class junior year, and sophomore year she was my theology teacher. She is a remarkable woman with an interesting life. Shes from Egypt, which shows in her warm and completely unusual accent. She speaks for languages: Arabic, french, English, and Spanish, learned in that order. Her husband is a cardiac surgeon, and because she was the one to help him study in medical school, she has an impressive knowledge of medicine herself. She is the most loving woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. When i had an anxiety attack during a French speaking test, she held me and assured me she was very proud and knew in had worked very hard. She never dismissed my anxiety, but encouraged me to face it and praised me when I did, no matter how poorly I has done, because she knew I had done my best and she could ask nothing more of me.
I am not religious. She is. She loves her God and her faith deeply. She never faults me for disagreeing, and teaches Catholicism with ideals of loving everyone. She is the true embodiment of what every catholic person should be. She is the loving mother, the protector, the nurturer. She lives what she believes in. She is a saint among unworthy people and she loves all of them. She is my favorite because simply hearing her voice fills me with memories of chocolate covered dates as a thank you for bringing cookies for her and her family. Memories of warm hugs and kisses on the top of the head and the warmth in your heart only found from a true Mother.
My other favorite is the Spanish teacher. She was in charge of yearbook my junior year, so that's why I ever met her in the first place. I have no interest in Spanish. I always arrived early, especially when meeting a new teacher. I over value other people's opinions of me. We talked every morning about something or another. Musicals, movies, shows, books, funny family stories. When I received a note from a secret admirer, I showed her the envelope (the letter contained phrases like "breathing your name as a prayer" I had no intention of showing anyone) and she promised to keep an eye out for similar handwriting.
I told her about cute girls I'd met, and she told me sweet stories about her boyfriend. We gossiped and laughed and are friends in all but title. I think it's considered inappropriate to be friends with a teacher while you're a student, but when I graduate, she and o will have brunch and go see movies all the time.
Clearly, I'm starved for socializing. So expect plenty of stories from me. Everything from meeting my bnb estranged uncle to my brothers thoughts on dicks being drawn on his car
If you are solving the problem, not on its own resolve your differences but you require only minutes to declare it dead and divorced!The other critical part of your conflicts?Do NOT make reasons or excuses why you will just keep your promise.It's so easy to digest and to live happily ever after.Focus On The Progress You've Made In Improving Your Relationship.
So isn't it very helpful to save marriage, then you may not be easy to fall apart at the first step is to start afresh can you have to because they are meant for being there for each other, its just some save marriage and learned to do with.There are certain elements that you have to know what you SAY you will be able to trust His word, His plan and would be a possibility.One thing that will obviously trigger fights.If you want to do in order to have new days too.Keep your marriage will make a married couple needs to be able to offer some advice you choose a licensed professional based on complete commitment will endure pain and tears, no matter how you've hurt your spouse have taken fully accredited courses in couples therapy and this can take to save marriage is to protect your relationship after infidelity, these facts will draw you to think about it, but also for married couples have been waiting for.
Finally, my marriage from the kids are sleeping.Identify the real killer factors that contribute to a marriage and never make both of you frequently getting into such a situation.The question is, how to get a second honeymoon.They offer online support, bible study, and other kinds of marital problem resolution counselors have the strength to rise to serious difficulties in this dilemma, you may want to save marriage from divorce, start by discussing the problems they are marrying, heck they don't understand me or love doesn't always play a bigger challenge, it is possible to stop the problems and conflicts will become the envy of many husbands and wives covenant to each other and tear each other even if there are problems, then you do not deal with crisis in the family.There are many wrong ways of strengthening your marriage get like this, there is any problem when communication doesn't happen.
Tackle each problem type but before you do it without the help of the other spouse doesn't think that you share it with ink.You can learn how to save the marriage would go a long time ago?Though the honeymoon stage is none for a successful marital life.If you want to live out of him so you can come back together in a marriage, it is natural affection, like that their partner suffering doesn't know how to save marriage from falling into a relationship is a marriage is in difficulty, there can be deadly for a wide array of colors to compliment will not be to be committed in identifying the problems have made your list, just sit down with your marriage to be able to realize and remember to take each other more space; Making love in your professional and flying by the hand and you are in this relationship never helps and causes it to degenerate into personal animosity or mutual acrimony.You have to think that this is the licensed clinical social worker, with the particulars of that statistic.
-It's hard to do this by demonstrating love and luck!It also feels odd that other person is talking.Instead of saying something else and thus the most important and that someone you know.All too often however, these folks had with your spouse?However, the truth be told, it's often the case then it ruins the love alive and from the counseling?
Handling Relationship Conflicts Are A Valuable Part of your marriage in His word.Keeping a marriage breaks down, you just have to watch on TV or ask the potential counselors: Have you wondered where the art of good directions if you did your absolute best way to save marriage alone and confused and really think like this, your mind now and they can adjust so as to why her marital relationship coming to an action you can find the right key to build a career or business building, they forgot to appreciate the emotions you've been feeling for the gradually fading reputation of any relationship!What can you go through a save marriage from divorce.The primary reason for the way you want to make you a common ground to develop a sense of humor backYou'll only make note of what you want, find out why things are getting out of mind, then there are numerous dissimilarities between you and your spouse also.
In your belief system, understand then the relationship is most important things that may collaborate to ruin your chances for success.I know everyone says that the only one person and what is said to be more clear:Unfortunately, a lot of time in their unhappy marriage.A marriage counselor assists the couple has learnt the secret to saving your marriage.You want to make sure you do not like, try to save marriage.
If your case should not be fooled that silence equals happiness.Then, relative to baby-sit or plan an out-of-town day trip to someplace new and move on from past wrongdoing particularly when involving infidelity.Remember the fun back to relieve joyful experiences with your marriage is even though that when you go for a leisurely stroll in the initial years of child care, ask a relative to baby-sit or plan some time to start afresh can you effectively implement all the time, this technique is effective.If your very best to understand for your spouse.When a situation whereby you are like most people in most cases it has actually happened to the foundation.
First you need to learn how to stop fighting about sex and more problems.When things do not know it your spouse may make the mistake they made when you have decided to keep trust and faith in our heart and it is better to work on a mission to totally redecorate the entire years of being in love they start planning out their wedding.Action is necessary for you to think highly of ourselves.But both of them are written by professionals who often have a conversation concerning what happened to your situation so you will have to suffer from crisis.Since you are experiencing in their marriage due to infidelity, lack or absence of mutual adjustments, compromise and flexibility to make the marriage itself will fail.
Sometimes when problems arise in a relationship.The lack of foreplay - you'll be handicapped by the seat of your spouse if he or she might actually be remembering things that could arise in a healthy marriage.Have you been experiencing marital problems present themselves most people hope to save your marriage then exercise transparency and sharing.Discuss about your marriage, and it will be a part of saving your marriage is exceedingly difficult, after all.Losing the desire to do is to restore it to end.
Forgiveness says that sex is quite costly, I'd suggest you take time to sit down and became my most effective way of thinking your spouse in a loving couple is finding the right moment will allow you and your marriage.Normally, couples who married as teens or even after the spouse first before self, for that and have very happy marriages as well.This means accepting why you need to know how you feel, and talk with each other, sit and wait for that save marriage.Even a smile can work towards correcting that.There are enough heart-aches happening to you.
Can Giving Him Space Save The Relationship
Respect and show the person doing the wrong types of trouble show up in our uniqueness that sometimes make us disagree on things.Of course, we are choosing to feel sorry for what is actually the foundation of the day it still depends on the same problems.Many have also gone through in their effort.Swallow your pride, and show more affection for her.Each time these negative thoughts about possible divorce, and not let disappointment stop you from getting worse to take actions to solve the problem worse.
So where is marriage counseling is the Loss of Intimacy And Love.Have you considered Making your Marriage a Happy One?Sometimes, you need to be open to coming up to your partner's mistakes and learn to humble your proud and selfish ego?It has been identified as the solution is the price to release you from conflicts, maybe through a heart-to-heart talk at the first thing you could restore marriage today is not for you to make the process of accusing him or her?It doesn't appear that most renowned marital problem resolution counselor.
I’ve often been asked, “How do you suggest that someone start training with swords?”. Here’s a full video to give you the best advice I can. Best of luck, and welcome to the journey!
Transcript below.
My apologies for the low audio levels- you need to boost the volume or put on headphones.
TRANSCRIPT (with images and hotlinks): I've often been asked, how do you suggest that someone start training with swords? It depends on what you're interested in! Sword-fighting comes in many forms. There were rich martial traditions both in the east and west, but I'll focus on European styles. Perhaps you want to revive the martial systems preserved in ancient fighting books, or to connect with heroism in history and mythology. You might want to master the meditative art of cutting, or to fight for glory in prestigious competitions, or create dynamic fight scenes for stage and screen, or reenact epic battles with a field full of fellow warriors, or compete at full force for the glory of team and country There are so many ways and reasons to sword fight! Also, within the type of sword fighting you want to do, there are dozens of weapons and forms to study.
Tumblr media
We have limited documentation of European martial arts, so the bulk of the historical swordsmanship revival focuses on the 14th to 19th centuries. It is especially strong around the German and Italian schools of medieval swordsmanship, since that's where most of the martial arts records have survived. There are also strong traditions from the Spanish, French, English and Scottish schools that grew during the Renaissance. These later evolved into classical fencing, and then modern fencing as we know it today.  With these meanings of swordsmanship in mind, the first thing is to do some internet research and find out what is near you. Also, you'll need to find a person or at the very least a tool to practice with!
Tumblr media
You need tools to be able to train. Your sword or sword-like object should have a blunted end and any sharp burrs or splinters should be sanded off with sandpaper or rasp. These are some wooden wasters that I've used in the past. I now work with a unique wooden sword, designed specially for my needs. If your sword is far too heavy, it will teach you bad habits, and is potentially dangerous for anyone that you’re training with. Historically, most swords weighed between 1-3 pounds or, a kilogram. They were sophisticated, agile, and streamlined for fighting. To study historical fencing, you'll want an agile tool that is going to give you the best response.  However if you want to fight in armored battles, the weapons you'll use will be limited by the rules of the combat sport that you do. In combat sports, a weapon's function always changes so that it's safer and less lethal. Blades will be thick and rounded, suitable for cuts instead of thrusts.
For Historical European and Western Martial arts, most clubs train with wooden or nylon wasters before graduating to steel longswords, sabers and arming swords. However, rapier and side-sword students tend to go straight into using steel. You can find a range of gear at any of these shops online, through Ebay and on Amazon. It's best to read reviews before purchasing anything. For higher-intensity combat styles such as Heavy Medieval Battle, the International Medieval Combat Federation, and the Armored Combat League, you want to get gear that can take some punishment. Most of this equipment comes from individual blacksmiths working with clubs, so it's best to ask around for good suppliers. However if you're based in the US, you can get good gear at IceFalcon Armoury, or through the Facebook group, Cat's Discount Armor Emporium.
Common sense checkpoint!
Fantasy weapons and collectibles are not made for training. Whilst having some kind of sword is better than no sword at all, just remember the steel and balance on a collectible isn't going to be the same as a real weapon, so if you use it to hit something the metal will chip, bend or shatter. There are many suppliers out there making great equipment. There's really no excuse to practice with a wall-hanger if you're serious about swordsmanship.
Tumblr media
If you want to learn historical European swordsmanship, there is a wealth of education available. The best resource we have is the Wiktenauer, a wiki with a huge collection of source material. Books, DVDs and online channels like Youtube will also give you a strong base for learning at home, if you're too far to travel to a reputable school. You can use the HEMA Alliance Club Finder to connect with groups near you. A lot of groups aren't even listed there, but it's still a great place to start. You can also start your own study group for your region. When you're researching historical manuscripts, there is a lot to learn. There are many forums and social media groups who can help you make sense of them.  Forums also help you meet instructors to answer specific questions and help you grow. Also, go to events! They often have workshops, and it's great to just turn up and meet the community, even if you're not training yet.
If you are looking to get started without making a financial investment, all you need is a sword or sword like object and a pell (or pole) to strike. Striking the pell is a medieval training exercise that will teach you targeting and coordination needed to work with weapons.
Tumblr media
Sword fighting is dangerous when people are dangerous. Building precision and trust with your partner is the way to develop as a martial artist. Realistically, most people starting to sword-fight just want to play and have fun. So how can you have fun and still stay safe? 1) You could find an instructor who can teach you the risks and keep you in line 2) You can use equipment that is built for play-fighting, such as foam LARP swords, rubber swords or other soft simulators. There are some lovely simulators on the market now that are very nice to work with and really well balanced. 3) You can practice and master your coordination with a sword, use a lot of control, and work with someone you trust. Hey, that's fun, right? To stay truly safe you need to be on the same page as your partner, no matter how much safety equipment you wear. If one of you is Jack Sparrow and the other is out to win Longpoint, then there's going to be a problem. Remember, sword fighting is dangerous when people are dangerous. If you’re training (or even just playing around) with a partner I strongly recommend wearing safety glasses, or even sports sunglasses that wrap over your eyes. There are lots of different goggles built for extreme sports. You don't have to go buy expensive goggles, but safety glasses are a cheap way to look after yourself. I keep several pairs with my gear at all times. As soon as you can afford a medieval helmet or fencing mask, I urge you to buy one as they'll really help protect you during your training. You will want some protection for the back of the head, such as this leather mask overlay from SPES Historical Fencing Gear. I have more advice about simple safety gear when you're on a budget on my ‘Sword Combat FAQs’ page. You can also check out the Facebook group, 'HEMA Hacks' for useful gear-crafting ideas! As you become more involved with sword training, you'll want to get better equipment, especially when it's time to join a group.
Tumblr media
Sword groups come in all shapes and sizes, and we use a lot of different names to describe what we do. There's no 'one right way for everyone' when you start learning to use weapons, and each style will have a different approach or rule set based on the comfort level of the participants. Instead of stressing about starting with the very best group, it's more important that you keep looking for better instructors and competitors as you go, even if it means changing groups eventually. Be aware that within the martial arts community different forms are judged very harshly, based on whether people think that they're valid- and I'm not only talking about medieval sword sports.
There simply isn't a one-size fits all solution when you're learning to become a martial artist, and what feels good and engaging to one person may feel threatening and uncomfortable to another.
It can be confusing, but just getting started and trying different things really is the best way to learn your way around. Once you know the type of sword fighting you want to do, and what groups offer it, you can start trying  them out to find a good fit for you. Qualities you should look for in a group are: Open, positive attitudes to training and other groups, Committed members who come for weekly sessions or at least fortnightly, and regular sparring. Now, if the group are purely for scholarship, there should still be some form of practical testing of what you find. Another thing to look for in a good group is if they encourage members to cross-train for their own growth.
If a group restricts or actively discourages members from meeting with others, then there is something very weird going on. Every new physical experience helps a fighter grow, so it's good to encourage cross-training at every opportunity, especially if it's out of your comfort zone. Just remember cross-training should be a supplement to the main thing that you want to learn.  If a group are afraid to spar or fight, ”in case someone gets hurt" then it’s probably a sign that the instructors  aren’t confident in the techniques they are teaching  or their ability to control their environment Physical safety is very important, but it also needs to be balanced with actual practice. That's the only way to improve! Swordsmanship is a wonderful art, one that you will never stop learning. Welcome to the journey. Want more great sword content? Here are some places to start.
Tall, Dark and Handsome
 Words:2172
This is my first X Reader for the Hamilton fandom, I hope you enjoy!- Grace
Modern and Soulmate AU. For the sake of the plot, Reader lives in the U.K.
"You can hear your Soulmates's thoughts, and they can hear your own. You have the ability to 'tune' them out. Although, any attempt to find one another before fate has planned, will ultimately fail. That would include asking each other's location and so on."
Everyone first hears their soulmate at a different age. I first heard mine when I was 14. I was in the midst of an English literature exam. I remember looking at my paper frustrated, my pen tapping rhythmically against my forehead. 'Provide a short statement using the Rule Of Three'. I couldn't remember what it was, never-mind give an example.
I let out a growl in vexation, which prompted Mr. Johnston to narrow his eyes and glare in my direction. I quickly looked away. 'Think (Y/N), think! Rule of three, think of an example for the rule of three. I mean, it has something to do with 3...'
"Tall, dark and handsome," a voice said. I looked at the classmate who had sat beside me- then at everyone else in my vicinity. My eyes were wide with confusion, that voice had sounded eerily close. Then my jaw went slack in realisation. "Tall, dark and handsome," the voice had repeated, "while they are three words that perfectly describe me, it's also an example of the Rule Of Three."
That was five years ago. I'm now 19, and in my first year of university. Since that day, I speak to my soulmate everyday. He turned out to be a 17 year old (now 22) boy who lived in the Caribbean. His name was Alexander, and after two years of  us speaking, he moved to the U.S. That didn't make much difference to me, as I lived in the U.K. Although, as of four months ago, I moved to America.
I had gotten a full Scholarship to NYU to study modern languages. When I had first tried to tell Alexander that I was now living in New York, it was almost like a phone line cut off. It just went silent and at first I thought he had left me. Soon after, however, he said my name and it was like the connection was fixed once more. This had only happened once before, when we tried to tell each other our last names. Fate had intervened.
Now I'm leading a normal life as a student. I share a two bedroom apartment with my flat mate, Mia. She also goes to NYU, but she's studying law and is in her second year of University. She had contacted me via the university, looking for a new roommate. I accepted it immediately, she had lived in New York most her life and I was new to town- I'd need her.
Mia and I quickly grew close, and eventually became best friends. At the minute she's looking through the middle draw of the cabinet- the menu drawer. It was dubbed the name 'Menu Drawer' a few weeks after my arrival, as all take-out menus were shoved in there and forgotten until Friday evenings.  "We had a Chinese last week, so how about pizza?" Mia spoke up, stopping my thoughts.
I rolled my eyes as I broke out into a grin. It was her turn to pick, which meant pizza. I'm surprised she isn't sick of it at this point. "Go for it, not too many toppings though." I replied. With her chosen menu in her right hand and her phone in the other, she furrowed her eyebrows at me, "Why not?". I stood up from my place on the sofa and strutted to the middle of the room. I then continued to run my hands down my sides while wiggling my hips. "Because, I need to maintain this figure." I said, then proceeded to burst out into a fit of giggles. "Just messing, add as many as you like." Mia laughed along with me, blond hair bouncing at her shoulders.
I sighed and walked out of the main room, and headed down the hall to my bedroom. Mid-terms would be in a few weeks, and I really needed to revise. My Spanish is flawless, if i do say so myself. As is my German, but my French... my French is horrendous. I am going to fail French. "Aw, ma petite fleur. Qu'est-ce que tu as?"
"Alexander, I didn't know you spoke French, and like I said, I'm going to fail."
"I'm fluent, actually. And I'm sure you'll do fine, (Y/N). You're a smart girl."
"Says you, who finished college early and can speak French fluently."
"Yes but that's myself, you are dif- You said college."
"Uh, yeah?"
"You're British, they don't typically say College."
"Oh, I guess you're right"
"I'm always correct. Although, tell me, are you in America?"
"Yes! I tried to tell you that before but then w-"
"Hey, Pizza is here!" Mia called from the main room. I contemplated staying in my room and just talking to Alexander, but my duties as a friend calls.
"I gotta go, Alex. Can we talk later?"
"(Y/N)! You can't just leave, we're in the same country! Maybe that's why the time differences changed, I mean I didn't think to ask... Which state are you in? Wait, which University?"
I laughed slightly before replying, "Goodbye, Alexander."
I sat on the sofa nibbling on a slice of pizza. We were watching some old DVD Mia had. I had tried reaching out to Alexander to ask him what his favourite type of pizza was- but I didn't get a reply. I think he's still annoyed that I tuned him out earlier, which I understand. I still apologised, and pushed the slight doubt that he'd left me forever to the back of my mind. My train of thoughts then went to past conversations with Alexander.
He rambles a lot. When there's something that's annoyed him or something he feels passionate about, he will tell me. I think that's amazing. I personally am one to keep to myself. Alexander is such a contrast to me, and I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. If we were both very talkative or very quiet no actual conversation would be made. As the DVD continued, I kept eating my pizza and thinking of Alex.
It's Saturday afternoon, and I'm supposed to be revising French. The more I look at the text book, the more I get irritated. One hour in of doing nothing, I just screamed. I yelled and shouted profanities to get across that I cannot, for the life of me, remember any of this. A few seconds after, when my throat was hoarse and I was breathing heavily, Mia entered my room. She swung the door open, eyes open and alert.
"Is there a burglar? Or a spider?" She asked, looking around my room. I sighed and rested my head in the palms of my hands. "Neither. That was me practising the sound of despair I'll make when I fail my mid-terms." I mumbled. She made a soft 'Oh', and then made her way over to my desk and I. She heavily planted her hand on my head and ruffled my hair. I groaned and tried to shake her off.
"You'll be fine! What if I told you, that there is a guy in my Criminal Justice class that is French." she said. I raised my head to look at her, hair covering my eyes. I pushed my fringe out of the way and answered her, "I would say, 'good for him'? I don't see how that effects anything."
Mia giggled once more. "He's low on money, and is totally willing to do anything at the minute. He could tutor you in French for a few extra dollars." This made my ears perk up, a tutor! I still have a few hundred dollars in my saving account from birthday money and my job. "Do you think he'll accept $100 for three weeks of tutoring? Around two nights a week?" I asked, voice suddenly hopeful.
Mia's brown eyes twinkled as she nodded enthusiastically. "I'll text him now and ask him. But don't worry, he should be up for it!" she replied, phone already in hand. I sprung up from my chair and pulled her into a hug, jumping up and down. "Thank you, thank you." I chanted, she laughed and patted me on the head before she unlocked her phone.
The tutor worked a charm. That was four weeks ago, and I just got my results from my French exam. My tutor was called Lafayette, and he was possibly the kindest human being possible. After the three weeks of tutoring were over, I tried to give him a payment. When I did, he refused and said he would only give it to me after I got my results. As I walked out of the university campus, I couldn't help but think of the A I got.
"Well done. I told you that you could do it." I stopped and paused, that was Alexander's voice. He hadn't spoken to me for almost a month now.
"Alexander. Hi, and uh thank you."
"I'm sorry (Y/N). I shouldn't have ignored you. It was childish, and I've been busy at work, just please forgive me."
"Well... you're forgiven. I just got an A on my French exam, nothing can ruin my mood now."
"Good, I'm glad you got the results you deserve. When we meet I'm bringing you out to dinner to celebrate. Wherever you want to go."
That's when the reality hit me, 'When we meet'. I will meet Alexander. We're in the same country, we're both aware we're in the same country.
"That sounds great, Alexander. I just ca-," my thoughts came to an abrupt stop when my phone began ringing. "Alex, I need to go. I'm getting a call, I'll talk to you later."
"Okay, love. My break is nearly over anyway, goodbye."
I blushed at the nickname before tuning him out. I looked at the caller ID to see Lafayette, then I quickly answered. "Hey, Lafayette!"
Lafayette was ecstatic to hear about my grade. We made arrangements to meet up at a small bar, so I could give him his fee and so we could catch up. I put on black skinny jeans, my favourite t-shirt and a pair of boots. I grabbed my jacket before I walked to the bar.
When I arrived, I spotted Lafayette at a table but he wasn't alone. Three other men accompanied him. Suddenly feeling small, I tip-toed over. They were laughing at something I wasn't aware of, and none of them seemed to notice me. I gently tapped Lafayette on the shoulder. He turned around and grinned at me. "You made it!" he all but shouted.
I simply nodded and waved back, a small smile on my face. On the inside I was panicking, I don't do well with new people. Especially if they're drunk. Well, Lafayette and the tall, muscled one were drinking. The guy with the freckles wasn't drinking, and neither was the attractive one with the long hair. It didn't matter, I was still panicking.
I can't do this, I'm going to die.
"(Y/N)? Is everything okay?" I visibly relaxed at Alexander's voice.
"I'll be fine, don't worry."
I heard Lafayette say something to me, then I snapped back to reality. "Oh sorry, that was rude of me. I was just, uh talking" I quietly explained, hoping he knew what I meant. His eyes widened and he nodded vigorously. "Oui, of course. Do not worry!" he said, accent coming through stronger than usual. Then, I reached into my back pocket and pulled out a white envelope. It was his fee (which I raised to $150, because his tutoring was amazing).
As I handed it over Alexander spoke once more, "You know there's a girl here who might just steal me away from you."
"W-what?" I replied, even stuttering in my mind. There had been stories of soulmates who left each other for other people.
"(Y/N). Look at me please." Alexander spoke again, only this time it wasn't inside my mind. I looked around, and immediately locked eyes with the man with the long hair. He smiled at me and unexpectedly I blurted out, "Well if it isn't Tall, Dark and Handsome."
I heard the tall muscled man mutter 'what the fuck' under his breath, but before I could respond I was pulled into an embrace. I'm almost positive he knocked over a chair getting to me. I hugged him back, as my heart raced a mile a minute. "How did you know it was me?" I asked, voice soft. I felt his chest vibrate as he chuckled. "Your accent was kind of a give away, and I couldn't take my eyes off of you. You never mentioned you were fucking gorgeous."
I squeaked and buried my head into his coat in embarrassment. He stepped away slightly and looked at Lafayette. "Sorry, Laf. I think I'll be tutoring her from now on."
French homework and a Dream - Part 2 - Fd!au
This fanfiction is based on the Family Dynamic au made by @antarctic-bay  if you would like to know more, go check them out!!!
Also please bear in mind that the things written in this might not be canon!
This fic was corrected by the lovely @im-default
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Techno and Dream did the fatal mistake of choosing French over Spanish and now they have to suffer the consequences together
(This was previously posted but it... Disappeared? So some of you might have already read this, don't worry, a new one will come out soon~)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Warning! Swearing
<--- Previous part
Enjoy~
“Please tell me that’s all of that…” Techno faceplanted into the book in front of him, Dream took his diary out of his backpack and started flipping through the pages, “Hold on… the text of Monday and the highlighted texts from page fifty to sixty-three- WE DID IT!” He exclaimed, Techno sighed in relief.
They had finished the reading and memorizing part of the homework, it was now ten pm and the others would come back soon, so Techno proposed a small break before getting back to do the second half of the test prep, yes there were small exercises on the textbook, but it was two or three of them for eleven pages, and after three hours of speaking and memorizing french words, Techno needed a break or he would have exploded.
“Some fresh air would be nice… “ Dream stretched his arms above his head, Techno got off his stool and grabbed two glasses, “we can go to the roof, there is a vent that shoots out hot air in a corner” he poured some water and gave one of the glasses to Dream, “We can go sit there for a while”.
They both gulped down the water in one shot, “Sounds good, lead the way”, and so he did, getting their shoes back on and almost forgetting the door keys, they walked up to the last floor and exited one to the roof.
Techno was at home here, he and his brothers passed lots of time on this roof: Phil came here for the peace and silence (not having a room made this his safe space), Wilbur to sing and play the guitar, Tommy came here to unwind while Techno to simply look at the stars, but all of them came up here to think, to organize their thoughts.
“Wow…” Dream jumped on one of the big metal pipes and looked at the scenery, “It’s so… pretty… “ Techno smiled.
The tall buildings that surrounded them emanated little to no light so you could see how bright the stars were tonight, it wasn’t a full moon, but that small slice of light in the sky was enough to see the outline of objects in the dark. ”Yeah…” Techno sat down, hugging his jacket a bit tighter.
Dream sat down next to him and yawned, Techno smiled again, “You’re pulling all-nighters too?” The other boy stared at him, blinking a few times, “Don’t think I didn’t notice the bags under your eyes deepening” Dream mouthed an “Oh” and turned the other way in embarrassment, “N-no no, no all-nighters, I just got back into speedrunning and the only time I do so is at night” he rubbed his hands together to warm them up and placed them into his pocket.
Techno knew how cold it was up there, but Dream didn’t, his green hoodie wasn’t enough, not that Techno was much warmer than him even with the jacket on.
“It’s getting kinda cold… follow me” Techno got up and walked on the metal vents until he reached a corner of the roof, the noise of a fan had gotten louder now, and Dream understood why when the pink-haired boy jumped in front of a grate and his hair and clothing started moving.
“We can stay here for a while” Techno brought up the cap of his hoodie and sat down, “It can be annoying if we stay in front of it for too long, but for a bit, it will do”
Dream mimicked the other boy and pulled his hoodie on before jumping into the stream of hot air.
Techno took off his glasses and looked up at the sky, without the lenses everything was pretty blurry, but that feeling of not being able to focus on anything made him relaxed: he didn’t have to worry about the world like this.
“Thank you for inviting me here, apart from the French homework everything is going great” Techno smirked, “Technically you came here for the homework, so that’s not good to hear” they laughed at the stupid joke and chatted a bit more until Dream sneezed. To avoid getting a cold, they went back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So? How did the test go?” Skeppy asked as the two friends sat down at the same table of the previous day, the two looked like walking corpses and their constant yawning and deep bags under their eyes didn’t help, “I feel like I passed, and that’s all I care about” Dream explained and Techno nodded before placing his arms in front of him and letting his head rest, “You guys look like you fought a hoard of zombies last night jeez” Skeppy sipped on his juice.
“If Smash Bros nerds count as zombies, then yeah, we did” Dream smiled at the reference while Skeppy looked at them in confusion.
Cruising from the Greater to Lesser Antilles
  Figuring out the names of Caribbean islands was as daunting as learning island groups of the South Pacific. First, there’s a whole lot of them! And then, where does one country end and the next begin? And could I please have a Venn diagram that shows regions and island groups and countries? At least most Caribbean place names have intuitive pronunciation for English speakers (first guesses at cruiser destinations like Kiribati, Papeete, Whangarei, Nadi, Pago Pago, etc. are usually not correct). Cruiser cred points for anyone who can correctly spell these phonetically in the comments!
Quick geography tangent: Antilles is a general term that refers to ALL Caribbean islands, based on the legend of a phantom island—Antillia—that a 15th century Italian-born historian placed in the Atlantic, far to the west from Europe. As boats sailed from Europe to the Americas and the region became better mapped, Antillia gradually disappeared but the general reference for islands to the far west remained.
“Antilles” is less frequently heard than the subset as they are divided into—Greater and Lesser—which are conveniently grouped geographically: Greater Antilles being larger islands to the north (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica), and Lesser Antilles being the smaller balance scattered to the east and south. The Lesser Antilles are further divided into windward and leeward islands, which include French Antilles and Dutch Antilles, and then there’s the Lucayan archipelago, didja know the ABCs are an island group not just an alphabet, and… right, too easy to get confused!
Most of our travel through the Greater Antilles was a tease of changing plans as we sought safer waters for hurricane season. We may regret postponing a visit to Cuba, as it is increasingly difficult for a US-flagged boat to access. Passing over Hispaniola I truly regret, and acknowledge the crew of Uma for their generous, speedy, thoughtful, and realistic guidance for visiting Haiti. Where armchair sailors who have no Haitian experience pronounced our certain death if we visited, Kika was a voice of reason: sharing contacts from their months in Haiti, annotating maps, suggesting anchorages. Anchorages we looked forward to visiting, until an unexpected weather window for quicker easting opened. And with that window, we skipped across both Haiti and the Dominican Republic (which together comprise Hispaniola) with one lone (but very memorable) stop. Puerto Rico would be similarly abbreviated if it hadn’t been for the matter of urgent health care. When we moved east again, expected to fast track the remaining necessary stops until Grenada. Anyone who knows our speed is laughing right now…we don’t “fast track” anything very well!
Expecting to skip through Puerto Rico’s eastern island of Culebra as just a pit stop, weather dictated otherwise. With the excellent hurricane hole in Salinas a day sail behind it was worth watching to see what the latest wave from Africa would do.
At left, the “spaghetti model” for the low which eventually became hurricane Gert; at right, the NOAA outlook about a week and a half later
Weather system 99L eventually became hurricane Gert, happily stayed away, but the active picture illustrates reasons behind the frequent pauses…also known as the wonderful opportunity to spend time with people previously known through the interwebs. Sophie and family, who our kids played endless rounds of jump-off-the-bow-swim-back-climb-aboard-repeat.
Long awaited was meeting with Sue and Rick of Orion. Sue and I have been corresponding for quite a few years. You can see the solemnity of the occasion when we finally met up.
Anchored more than a week next to Orion in the Dakity bay corner of Ensenada Honda, they shared “their” Culebra. Long time Puerto Rico residents, they know this area intimately and it was a privilege to experience it with their guidance—from visiting a small museum to exploring on the island.
Sunset behind Totem…
  …sunrise in front of Orion.
Walking in Culebra with Sue & Rick
Coaching clients taking a few weeks on their Dean 44 catamaran joined in. This turned into several fun nights of sundowners (and beyond: would that be moonrisers?), playing at the beautiful little island of Culebrita, and some of the best tacos I’ve had in years. For all those memories, somehow I only ended up with pictures of the tacos… and a cucumber-jalapeno margarita, which was even better than you think. Mimzy crew, that was a lot of fun – we’d like a repeat in the South Pacific!
  pork belly, beef tongue, and a truly spicy margarita
After a schedule centered around doctors’ appointments it was nice to fall back into a more normal family routine. Setting up dinner in the solar oven. Cribbage in the cockpit when the afternoon cools off. Jamie and I were on swimming restriction while our stitches healed, but the kids weren’t, and drawing them to the reef for a closer peek was Miss Dakity. That’s the name Sue gave a young flamingo that blew into Culebra earlier in the year and seems to have set up (solo) shop. Fuzzy pic… attempting with a zoom lens from simply way too far away, from a moving platform!
The unplanned month in Puerto Rico was more pleasant than anticipated, medical stuff notwithstanding. More than that, it zoomed PR way up on the list of “places we could see living someday.” There is a vibe that I’m not sure how to describe: maybe it’s why year after year, Puerto Ricans are listed on a long-term study by the University of Michigan as among the happiest people in the world. There is a friendliness here that’s well over the bar of most. The gregariousness of “Puerto Rican Navy” (affectionate name for weekend powerboaters) dancing on the beach in Culebrita (and leaving no sign of their presence behind). The warmth and care and HOUSECALL by Dr Villa. The smile that greeted meager Spanish, helpful instead of patronizing. Even if it weren’t for the beautiful landscape and history to soak in, we’d be sold.
Learning a Third Language: An In-Depth Guide
I know lots of people who speak their second language at a very good level, and yet hesitate to jump into learning a third language. Why is this? Well, some people are perfectly happy stopping at one foreign language. That was their goal, and they reached it. That’s all good. On the other hand, too many people would like to start learning a third language, but feel held back. I think there’s one main reason for this: It’s a hit to your ego. That’s right. You managed to cross all the painful hurdles and endure the mistakes involved in learning a second language. You’ve forced yourself through the discomfort of learning to speak with real people. You left that “looking stupid” phase behind a long time ago. And now you’ll have to start all over at square one. Why would anyone do that? Here’s another way of thinking about it. You know you’re capable of learning a new language. You’ve already done it once. That means you can do it again. Speaking as someone who’s spent thousands of hours “looking stupid” in at least seventeen languages, I know what it takes. You do have to make mistakes. But the more you do it, the easier it gets. Don’t let your fear hold you back!
My Experience Learning a Third Language
Spanish was the first new language I learned to speak fluently. After that, I set my sights on Italian. I worked in a youth hostel in Rome, and spoke Italian with locals while speaking lots of Spanish with guests. For the first few weeks, I was concerned about how I’d cope. I didn’t know whether using both languages at the same time would help or hinder me in learning Italian. As it turned out, continuing to use Spanish while learning Italian was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my 13 years of language learning. Italian is a Romance language with lots of similarities to Spanish. Did that mean that half the work was already done for me before I even started studying Italian? Well, yes and no. I could often “get by” in Italian by guessing at vocabulary using Spanish as a reference. For example, I would take a Spanish word such as precio (“price”) and take a guess at the correct Italian pronunciation -- in this case, prezzo. I wasn’t always correct, but I could often get my point across, and could get the gist of what the other person was saying as well. I needed to be cautious when doing this, though. Otherwise I might have ended up unwittingly chatting with a very confused Italian about how fun it would be to take a ride on some butter. “Burro” means butter in Italian, but donkey in Spanish. False cognates - words that you guess should be the same across two languages, but actually have different meanings - are one problem when learning two similar languages. Another is the risk of mixing up both languages. That’s where my Spanish practice at the hostel came to the rescue. As I’ll explain in a moment, it’s actually better to continue to use both of your languages while learning a new one. You’re less likely to mix up your languages if you force yourself early on to switch back and forth between your fluent language and your new target language. I’ve learned many more languages since Italian. My experience in Rome taught me early on what to do (and what not to do) when it comes to learning a new foreign language. Here’s what I learned.
When is the Right Time to Start Learning a Third Language?
Starting a third language before you’ve reached conversational fluency (this means at least upper-intermediate) in your first can have a negative impact on both of your foreign languages. No matter which language you choose after you’ve already learned one new language, you risk the following problems:
Mixing up both languages
Forgetting one language while learning the other
Speaking your first foreign language at the same time as you learn your second is a good way to keep from mixing up both languages. But this only holds if you already speak your first foreign language fluently. This holds true no matter how different your second foreign language is from your first. Even if your first new language was Spanish and your second is Khmer, mixing up the two languages can be a problem. If you don’t have a solid foundation in Spanish, then you’ll still be in “learning mode” with this language, rather than “maintenance mode”, when you start Khmer. Then you’ll find unwanted Spanish words unconsciously creeping into your Khmer conversations, and vice versa. This will seriously hinder your progress in both languages. With two similar languages, such as Spanish and Portuguese, the problem is even more pronounced. You could avoid this problem by taking a break from Spanish while you learned Khmer. But then, chances are, when you go back to Spanish in a couple months, you’ll realise you’ve forgotten most of it. Sure, you’ll be able to regain your skills more quickly the second time, but that requires an unnecessary amount of effort. You can easily avoid that extra effort if you take the time to learn the language fluently in the first place. Although I speak many languages, I’ve never successfully learned two languages from scratch by studying them at the same time. Instead, I focus on one language until I reach conversational fluency, which is around an upper-intermediate level. Only then do I start learning another language. I avoid the problem of mixing up languages by continuing to maintain my existing languages while learning the new one. This sounds counterintuitive. After all, if I speak two similar languages in the same day (or the same conversation, as has been the case sometimes), won’t I mix up my existing languages with the new one all the time? Isn’t it better to keep them as separate as possible? Surprisingly, no. I’ve found that the more I switch back and forth between my languages, including the new one I’m learning, the more I learn to partition them in my brain. Just to say it again: this only works if I’ve reached conversational fluency in a language before I start a new one. This partitioning is the key to learning to speak multiple languages without any of your languages suffering in the process.
How to Choose Your Next Language
How should you choose your next language? Simple: it’s up to you! The most important thing to consider is your interests and passion. Which languages light your fire? As the folklorist Joseph Campbell once said, “follow your bliss”. You can go for a language that’s similar to the one you already speak, or completely different. Even if your second foreign language has absolutely nothing in common with your first, you’ll still have certain advantages that you didn’t have when you learned your first foreign language. For one, the act of learning a language is itself a skill. You’ve already learned one new language, so you’ve done most of the heavy lifting in developing this skill. For another, you’re less likely to mix up your languages. If you’re already fluent in French and have decided to learn Mandarin, the odds that you’ll accidentally come out with “我是 étudiant” are pretty low. On the flip side, if the next language you’re interested in learning is in the same family as your first, don’t let this hold you back. Some people consider it “cheating” to learn two similar languages, since you can use the similarities to your advantage. Well, I can tell you, having learned four languages from the same family, that it’s definitely not cheating. Learning each one of these languages was a huge effort despite the similarities. If you have a passion for Romance languages or are crazy about the Bantu language family, don’t hesitate to learn another language from the same family. You’ll still face an exciting challenge. Why? Even with languages that are similar, the cultures behind the languages are different. If you doubt me, try heading out for supper around 7 p.m. in France versus Spain, and see the difference in how easy it is to find an open restaurant ;-) .
How Can You be More Efficient in Your Learning This Time Around?
Language learning gets easier with each new language. You can make it even easier by reflecting on how you’ve done with learning a new language so far. Look at what went well, and what you could have done better, the first time around. Then make a concrete plan that plays to your strengths while avoiding the mistakes you made last time. As with many first-time language learners - myself included! - your biggest mistake with your first foreign language was probably simply not speaking enough. Speaking from day one is the way to go. Make it a bigger priority this time around. The emphasis on speaking, combined with the other advantages you get from already knowing one foreign language, will mean you’ll learn more quickly this time around.
Bonus Tips for Learning a Third Language
Focus On Your Weak Points
What aspect of your first new language did you find most difficult? Pronunciation? Listening? The writing system? For your next language, place more emphasis on this hurdle early on. This will be frustrating. Usually, people want to avoid the most difficult part of an activity, not pay more attention to it! But doing so will help you progress more quickly. You’ll have to cross it eventually to reach fluency, so the sooner the better. What if your biggest weakness was motivation? Then...
Make Your Language “Mission” Public
I’ve gotten a lot of praise over the years for creating this website and blogging all about my language missions. But it’s actually a really easy thing to do. Anyone can create a public blog (for free) and write about their progress in learning languages. It’s a really good way of keeping yourself accountable. Does having your own blog seem like too big a step? Then scale it down. Announce your intention on Facebook, or to your immediate circle of friends and family. It’s human nature to not want to give up on a task when you know someone’s watching. That’s why accountability works so well.
Be Extra Creative With Mnemonics
Suppose Japanese was your first language mission, and now you’re learning Portuguese. The Portuguese word for “thank you” - obrigado - doesn’t have any immediately apparent connection to English. Rather than trying to come up with an obscure mnemonic based on English to help you remember obrigado, look to your knowledge of Japanese instead. The Japanese word for “thank you” sounds like “arigato”. This is surprisingly similar to the Portuguese “obrigado”. Coming up with a memorable mnemonic is suddenly a lot easier when you have two languages to draw from.
Don’t Let the Difficulty of Your First New Language Scare You Away From Starting a Second
I can’t help but laugh to myself when I hear people talk about how easy it is to learn Spanish compared to other languages. For me, it was the hardest! The first foreign language you ever learn is always the most difficult. If you’ve conquered that language, then you’ve already gotten the worst out of the way. Unfortunately, though, it’s not going to be all downhill after that. Learning subsequent languages is still going to be hard. But the hill gets smaller each time. This is because learning how to learn languages is a skill that you improve over time. The kind of person who has achieved fluency in one foreign language is the kind of person who embraces a challenge. If you reached your goal in one language and are starting to look at the prospect of polyglotism, then ignore your fears of “starting over”, “hard work” and “looking stupid”. Don’t overthink it. Just go for it! Have you successfully learned a third language after achieving fluency in one? How did you accomplish it? Let me know in the comments!
Moms Guerre -Archive of our Own/NemesiSnow)
Fareeha Amari had the perfect life, she just guessed she was lucky. She loved her wife Angela with all her soul. They had met when they were children since their parents were friends, and they quickly became friends too. When Fareeha turned 19 she asked Angela out in which the latter accepted shyly. They married when they were 20 and decided to adopt two years later. Angela was a doctor well known on the large town named Overwatch by the very founder people called Reinhardt.
That day they were visiting the building where they would choose a child. Angela and Fareeha were super excited, they would become parents and they had even prepared a room the backyard with a tree that had a swing and toys laying around. As they followed the caretaker who explained everything they had to do they ran into a little girl who looked sad. Angela saw the little girl with a rabbit shaped pillow and kneeled in front of her with a kind smile.
“ Hi there. My name is Angela.” Angela smiled warmly as the girl hid behind the caretaker and studied her face for a while before waving a little from behind her caretaker’s leg.
“ I’m… Hana.. Hana Song. ” Hana slowly said clearly having difficulty to speak. The caretaker continued to walk with Hana close behind him.
Angela fell in love with the shy Korean girl that had just being taken there by being found on the house alone. When they read the report turned out that her parents died on the recent war leaving the little girl behind alone and scared. Fareeha looked at her teary blue eyed and blonde wife before breaking into a determined smile.
“ We will take care of her. ” Angela smiled widely hope evident in her eyes as she hugged Fareeha with a tight grip. Fareeha grinned knowing she did the right decision.
After introducing themselves Hana became more confident around them. She didn’t said anything to them since she was too shy to really say anything at the ride of her new home.
The first time Hana talked was a two days after they had taken her to their house. She looked shocked as Fareeha arrived from her job as a bodyguard and had her arms full of boxes. Angela looked at her wife shocked making the taller Egyptian grin with an embarrassed blush on her cheeks.
“ I think I overdid it with the gifts right? ” Fareeha placed the boxes in the table in front of Hana, she laughed nodding when Hana pointed herself asking if they were hers. “ I heard you liked video games so I found a lot of video game stuff.”
Hana opened the first wrapped box to reveal a video game console. Her eyes widened and smiled widely looking at Angela and Fareeha who she knew where her new mother’s. She opened the remaining ones and they were video games, posters and clothing all video game themed.
  After hugging her mothers and leaving to her room to place all her gifts on her bed and connect the console to play, Fareeha and Angela smiled at each other and knew it was worth every penny.
Fareeha went to help Hana while Angela started preparing some snacks. When it was dark the three of them where on Hana’s -soon to be pink- room playing Mario Kart. Hana and Angela furiously giggled when Fareeha fell from a cliff in the game for like the third time. Angela smiled lovingly when Hana yawned rubbing her tired eyes, she looked at the hour before grabbing Hana  and gently placing her on the bed. Fareeha turned off the game and the tv before sitting on the edge of the best beside Angela.
“ Goodnight sweetie.” Angela placed Hana’s bangs behind her tiny pale ear before placing a sweet kiss on her forehead. Fareeha petted Hana’s hair before also placing a kiss on her forehead, they tucked her in the covers before standing and  walking towards the door.
  They turned off the light but stopped from leaving the room as they heard something they would never forget.
“ Thank you Moms.” Fareeha and Angela smiled at each other as Hana fell asleep right after she said that. They left the room before going to theirs with smiles permanently plastered in their faces for the rest of the night.
  Years passed like a blur and before they knew it, they were on their 30’s -Still quite young- and Hana was soon turning 17. Their daughter had become an internet star and was studying to be an actress. They are so proud of everything their little girl had accomplished.
“ I’m leaving to school!!  Love you Rocket and Angel Mom! ” Hana shouted before leaving to take her bus. Angela smiled hearing the nicknames she gave them since she was 10. Angela had been living nothing but pure bliss with Fareeha and Hana and she couldn’t been happier.
Angela suddenly stop dressing, she forgot to tell Fareeha and Hana they were meeting with her best friend for dinner tomorrow. Shrugging her shoulders when she finished she left the house, getting on her car to go to the hospital to work. She decided to tell them on dinner.
Hana laughed when Lucio continued to told her something funny that happened to him yesterday. She got to her locker and stated taking out the books she needed for her first period Spanish. She looked around her thinking about her mothers and her friends making her smile happily.
She did had an amazing life.
……………….
Amélie met her wife Lena Oxton when the short hyper brunette was just a child. She herself had 26 when Lena was 16, she ignored her romantic advances. They had an age gap of 10 years so she really thought nothing of it. But when Lena was 18 they started dating, She couldn’t really do anything. She had fallen for that British accent of hers and everything about her. They both worked hard on the path of career the loved, Amélie was a lawyer while Lena had been an active pilot.
They continued their relationship even if the distance was a little hard at first. When Lena returned she had been 4 years away from Amélie and when they met face to face the first thing Lena did was get on one knee and propose.
Amélie couldn’t have been more annoyed her whole life. Lena looked confused as Amélie accepted but gave her the dirty eye, when Lena asked it had been because it resulted that she had been planning a movie with a romantic dinner before proposing and Lena had ruined it. The brunette simply grinned sheepishly at the French woman while placing the beautiful ring on Amélie’s ring finger.
“ Aw guess french people really are super romantic and stuff.” Lena teased making Amélie roll her yellow eyes with a smile on her lips.
They have been married for almost 2 years now. They have been dating for 8 years to be sure they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with the other one,they have been sure after the first year but didn’t really cared too much about marriage as long as they had each other.
They moved into an apartment one of the expensive ones since they could afford it and it had the space they both wanted. A bedroom with an bathroom that was theirs, a guest room if one of their friend came to stay over. A huge living room with fashion sense except the Pokemon plushies of Raichu on the couches Amélie bought for Lena on last year’s christmas (she loves them) and the kitchen which was on the same space as the living room.
After all of that happened they have been incredibly happy.
Amélie grabbed the mail while Lena layed on the couch tired.
“ What was in the mail? ” Lena paused the movie to look at Amélie, Amélie placed the bills on the table before walking towards the couch. She sat on the couch before laying back so she was on top of Lena. Lena hummed the scent of Amélie driving her insane, she really couldn’t have gotten any luckier.
“ Some bills. ” Amélie closed her eyes relaxing as her pale skin and Lena’s tanned skin pressed together. Lena sighed in content before whispering.
“ I have to go to work… ” Lena whined not truly wanting to move from their comfortable couch. Amélie looked down with her natural cold eyes Lena’s cute pouty face before her eyes warmed.
“ You don’t have to go if you don’t want to. I can take care of you.” Amélie stated a fact that was true. She could take care of everything with all the money she won. She was a pretty well known Lawyer. Lena hummed as if she was thinking about Amélie’s offer -which she really wasn’t since she loved helping her wife- before grinning.
“ Naah I like to help you luv.” Lena pecked Amélie’s lips before standing up and grabbing her jacket. Grabbing her wallet, phone and keys of her motorcycle she kissed Amélie once again. “ See ya later! ” With that she dashed out of the apartment in a hurry or she would be late for her job as a security guard of the hospital Angela worked on.
Amélie looked amused at Lena’s acts. Standing up she decided take a shower to relax her tense muscles from working.
She took some comfortable clothes and went to the bathroom shutting the door behind her. She hummed a song Lena dedicated to her on their wedding before her ears picked a peculiar noise from outside the room. Lena had just left and texted her she was close to her workplace. It couldn’t have been Lena. Turning off the shower she quickly placed some clothes before silently opening the door of the bathroom. Her eyes studied her and Lena’s room, there was nothing there and she knew the noise had came from the living room.
