PSA: For people in Europe and North America
If you’re struggling with cost of living, food insecurity/financial problems, I highly recommend checking out the app TooGoodToGo !!! You can search for places in your area - restaurants AND SOME GROCERY STORES - that you can buy basically the food they didn’t sell that day for a massive discount! For restaurants, this is a great way to try out some new spots and get some variety of food without spending a lot of money, but getting groceries on here could save you a good chunk of what you need for the week. Plus, you’re taking food that is still good and stopping it from just being thrown out, reducing food waste and helping the planet! The stuff you get is kind of random potentially since it’ll be whatever the place sells that would’ve gone to waste, but you can filter down to search for vegetarian/vegan or specific places and types of food! I’m not sure exactly where all it will be available/useful but if you live in a city area there’s a good chance to find places in your area. I recently got a grocery bag through there for the first time: I paid £3 and got a massive bag filled with about 15 kohlrabi, a small bag of green beans, 2 small heads of lettuce, a big bags of potatoes, some dried mango bites, and two whole melons - probably would’ve been about £15-20 to buy all that at normal store price. Everything was pretty much right at it’s sell by date but is still perfectly okay to eat and has lasted 3 days in the fridge so far (besides what I cooked + ate already). Great way to get some produce and possibly bread/pastries cheap because that’ll be what often reaches its expiration date without being sold. Huge money saving way to add some decent healthy food to your meals! Hope this can help some people, time’s are tough so take care of yourselves however you can ❤️

Thanks for the good vibes!
My husband got his commission check that he was hoping for, and things lined up perfectly, so we were actually able to buy what we needed!

Day 3 of anixously looking over bills and crunching numbers. Just when I think I'm done, bam! Another expense pops up that we gotta squeeze into our budget somehow.
So I decided to check out that warrant they keep bugging me about. The info on their website is all over the place.
Sometimes it says I owe $746, even though I swear I paid it already. But hey, I can't prove it, so I gotta swallow that cost. And get this, sometimes it says I gotta pay the whole $746 in one shot, other times it says I can make payments. And then there are times when it's like "Nope, no record of your case here!"
Today, it finally let me make a partial payment, so I chucked in $25 just to ease my mind a bit. But guess what? When I refreshed the page, it still showed a $746 balance. Ugh, maybe it takes time to update or something. I'm considering that $25 payment as progress, you know?
Now it's up to them. If they want the rest, they better send me another letter with the right balance. If it still says $746, then I'll give them a call. But I ain't handing over the whole damn thing just because they might have their shit together over there.

PLEASE READ
tips/advice/solutions desperately needed
parental, income, and mental health problems incoming……
———
i know i havent been on/posting in a while… things have been *rough*
i graduated college, am paying back my student loans, finally got a job in a related field a month and a half after i graduated that pays $15 an hour and is 35 hours per week, and my parents keep making hints that im going to have to financially contribute more to our household or find somewhere else to live. they keep telling me that i need to contribute more as if im not paying off my student loans and have only been working for a month so far (and in college i had work study but it only brought in $70 per week)
additionally, im currently looking for a second job and if i get the one i just applied to as a waitress ill get anywhere between 12-22 hours a week, which would bring my total hours up to 47-57 a week
not to mention ive been trying to do commissions on the side as well but it’s difficult to find the time between work and helping around the house and still getting enough sleep, and ive also been trying to get rid of stuff i dont need and sell it
on top of all that, i desperately need to go back to therapy as i no longer have access to free therapy through my college, my old therapist i saw in high school doesnt take my new insurance and she charges $75 per session (which is a really good price!!) on the other hand, all the local therapists that take my insurance have expensive appointments $150-250 per session and our family is nowhere NEAR reaching our deductible, i dont know what to do because id like to rekindle with my old therapist so that i dont have to relive EVERYTHING, just the past few years, but my parents would make me pay 100% out of pocket to see her, as for a new therapist, theres a lot of waitlists and i think my parents will make me pay that out of pocket too
i know that was long but any advice or tips or solutions would be so appreciated
i wanted to also add that i have been trying to run a red bubble, and i also have a kofi but i need to post more on there

Just a ramble, think-typing to see what comes up.
Living two full-time lives (day job and grad school, which includes TA’ing) while subsisting on a single income in the city with the second highest cost of living on the continent is not exactly comfy, financially. And due to HR and Union infighting, the tuition waiver that I was supposed to have is no longer available. So while I am technically free from paying student loans while I’m in school, I am going to be paying pretty much the same amount in tuition. Every single term. I certainly won’t be able to save anything to pay ahead for tuition, but at least as a TA I can pay in instalments. However, I’m not guaranteed summer TAships.
So, brainstorming Side Hustles, as much as I loathe the term,.
I’ve tapped out my weekly hours for campus work, which is all unionized, so I can’t pick up short term research projects here and there. I’ve thought about seeing if my old jail cells need a female guard for weekends...it’s not a totally bizarre prospect. It wouldn’t be every weekend, I know the job well because I was the trainer, and it means lots of quiet time for schoolwork overnight. I even still have my uniforms. But it would also mean working potentially 7 days a week at times, cranking my hours from day to overnight, while dealing with day job stress and grad school stress, and not being able to plan weekends in advance, in case of a callout. Which matters. Saturday erranding catch-ups and Sunday breakfast are the two great social and emotional stabilizing factors in my life.
I wonder if I could tap into my volunteer jobs, and see if any of the entomologists or biologists have any data cleaning or presentations or transcribing to do that they have a bit of budget for. They would most likely need to go through their own institution’s hiring and work-study programs first, but you never know,.
Online freelancing gigs are a mug’s game these days, and you need to be at it full time to build up enough of a reputation to get decent contracts.
I could sell knitted things, but that’s always an uncertain prospect given the investment of time and materials. I don’t think I could justify all that sittin’ and knittin’ unless I knew I had a buyer. Private tutoring? Quite possibly, but that;s a whole level of one-on-one student involvement I don’t want to deal with at present while I’m also TAing.
Pondering continues.

Being financially stable sounds so nice right now. I wish I was able to afford my own house and not have to think about choosing between paying bills or having bare minimum groceries.
(don't worry @thescarlettempress, I was able to afford both this month)

woke up and someone spilled vanilla extract all over my dash, so as punishment you strange little beasties are getting all the VANILLA FACTS i know:
vanilla is the 2nd most expensive spice in the world (2nd to saffron)
which is why more than 99% of what we call "vanilla extract" is actually vanillin (vanilla's dominant flavor compound) and is not extracted from real vanilla.
luckily, even professionals struggle to tell the difference when it comes to things like baked goods. but there is a distinct difference in non-heat treated products like vanilla ice cream. real vanilla has a more complex, individualized flavor profile.
why is vanilla so expensive? because it is a ridiculously delicate & demanding crop. complete primadonna.
vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. these crazy flowers bloom for A SINGLE DAY and have to be HAND-POLLINATED in a process that is exhausting, delicate, and requires specialist knowledge passed down over generations.
then, if you're lucky, you get vanilla beans.
which then require months of further specialized treatment.
the entire process takes about a year and can go wrong at any stage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vanilla has been cultivated for over 800 years (possibly much longer). the first known cultivators are the Totonac, an indigenous people of Mexico.
the Aztecs used it as a sweetener to balance out the bitter taste of cocoa. it was popular in a drink called xocolatl--the precursor to modern hot chocolate!
it is only pollinated by a very specific orchid bee!!!
which is why no fruit could be grown outside of Mexico until the 1800s
Edmond Albius, born into slavery, invented the pollination method we still use today--launching a global industry when he was just 12 years old.
today, the majority of the world's vanilla is grown in Madagascar
if you want real vanilla, read the labels carefully--it's harder to find than you think!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in conclusion, those tiny black specks you see in fancy vanilla ice cream? those are vanilla bean seeds! itty bitty orchid seeds!!! they are delicious and also a PRISSY BITCH!
