Contrasting Comfort: The Ideological Chairs of Mies van der Rohe and Gerrit Rietveld
Mies van der Rohe and Gerrit Rietveld were influential architects whose philosophies and designs epitomize contrasting ideologies within modernist architecture. While both sought simplicity and functionality in their work, their approaches diverged in their interpretation of comfort, aesthetics, and the relationship between architecture and the individual.
Mies van der Rohe, known for his famous Barcelona Chair, embraced the mantra of "less is more" and prioritized clean lines, open spaces, and industrial materials. His designs, influenced by the principles of Russian Constructivism, aimed for efficiency and minimalism. The Barcelona Chair, with its sleek lines and luxurious comfort, embodies Mies' philosophy of modernism, where form follows function, and every element serves a purpose. It reflects his belief that true comfort arises from simplicity and clarity in design.
On the other hand, Gerrit Rietveld, exemplified by his Red and Blue Chair, challenged conventional notions of comfort and aesthetics. As a member of the De Stijl movement, Rietveld advocated for pure abstraction and universality in design, reducing compositions to geometric forms and primary colors. The Red and Blue Chair, with its hard surfaces and bold colors, defied traditional notions of comfort, inviting the sitter to engage with space, color, and form. Rietveld's philosophy emphasized the awakening of consciousness and the integration of art into everyday life.
In comparing the two chairs, the Barcelona Chair represents a sleek and luxurious approach to comfort, prioritizing relaxation and ease, while the Red and Blue Chair challenges the sitter to be alert and engaged, emphasizing the relationship between the individual and the environment. Mies' philosophy of "less is more" contrasts with Rietveld's belief in the dynamic equilibrium of opposites, reflecting differing attitudes towards simplicity, comfort, and the role of architecture in shaping human experience.
Overall, the ideologies of Mies van der Rohe and Gerrit Rietveld manifest in their respective chairs, showcasing contrasting approaches to modernist design. While both architects sought to create meaningful and functional spaces, their interpretations of comfort and aesthetics diverged, reflecting broader debates within the architectural discourse about the purpose and meaning of design in the modern world.

Every Day is Earth Day 🌎

I’ve been even more conscious about what I consume since going car-free 10 years ago. Whether it’s shopping second-hand, grocery shopping with a reusable tote, or refilling my glass water bottle, every small action makes a big difference.
It’s hard to believe that in 2014 I was a fashion blogger packing up my house in Traverse City to move to New York. Mindlessly purchasing and filling my closet, I used to have FOMO about staying on top of the latest styles. Back then, I didn’t think about the environmental impacts of everything I had collected over the years.
Tumblr media
I recently watched the Brandy Melville documentary on Max, which was even more shocking than I expected. Beaches and markets in Ghana are filled with wasted clothes from the US and Europe, leaving the country and people with our mess. It was heartbreaking.
Some people may wonder why I always wear the same variation of a black outfit- not only do I feel good in black, but my capsule wardrobe has been a direct response to the overconsumption in the United States. I sold and donated half of my wardrobe while living in NYC eight years ago, leaving me a lot lighter both on the inside and outside.
Trends come and go, but we only have one home- Mother Earth. Treat her well 🩵

📍Santa Rosa, Laguna
As I stepped out of my apartment and started walking in search of food, I couldn't help but notice the train railway near my place. The railway was a sight to behold, with its long tracks stretching out as far as the eye could see.
The railway was a reminder of the simpler times when life was less complicated, and people were more connected to each other. As I continued my walk, I felt grateful for the experience of seeing the railway and the memories it evoked.

Pull Back ☁️
Tumblr media
☁️ Retract Your Energy
they sometimes say less is more, and this couldn't be further from the truth, especially as somebody who's Human Design is a projector. I was always taught that you need to work harder and force things aggressively in order to get where you want to be in life. This isn't always true, and if anything, this sometimes created even more resistance for me to follow as well as backlash from my people or things. Now, if this is you, please do not be afraid to pull back. Think of it like this, the bees do not chase the flowers they just exist. This is you. Sometimes we are the bees, but it's also ok to be the flower.

Deleting my social media except for here and Snapchat has done wonders for my mental state especially in my current situation. I’m starting to realize we put too much emphasis on social media. I definitely feel less anxiety and stress wondering what people are thinking about my situation or worrying if they’re gonna message me and ask questions. 🥹😬🫠
