Twig Liveblog for Arc 6
[captain haddock voice] what a web serial huh! all i'm saying is that if i had written amy dallon i wouldn't also write this part with jamie. i appreciate the themes here about how the academy is creating its own contradictions, its authoritarian measures only make the resistance strong which in turn makes their measures more authoritarian, etc., and i can't help but wonder if a similar process is occurring with wildbow and i. i.e. the more he tortures me like this the more i want to [redacted]. why!!!!!!!!! why did sy transform into a raging homophobe the first time he interacted with a gay person lmao 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 he's basically bart simpson and jamie is millhouse.
here i was, a casual and respectful mary/sy enjoyer, titillated (in a respectful way) by the "undressing confession," daddy-issues cry for help though it may be, thinking that was the best i was gonna get as far as my sy dating sim side-project was concerned. then there was a brief moment where i was jubilant that there was some lillian/sy progress. then there was a brief moment where i was in religious fucking ecstasy where i thought jamie/sy really was gonna happen. then--and i remember it with crystalline clarity--walking home late at night, that one line hit, and i started cackling in the middle of a deserted parking lot. i'm only slightly exaggerating when i say this rivals the amy interlude in terms of being a true Epiphanic Wildbow Moment. then of course there's the final chapter. doubling down. you almost have to respect it.
i suppose other things happened too. i think the duke, after sy, is the twig character i'm most like. i am also large and powerful. i also command the respect of everyone around me. i am also flamboyant and attractive. i also condemn torture.
on that subject, i listened to avis' interlude on 1.5x speed cuz i thought it would be funny. kind of a nonentity for me personally, though i'm excited to see more fray so soon. i could only think of the quote from that great poet, kanye west:

Fangirl
Tumblr media
Before there was Simon and Baz, there was the college freshman who wrote about them. Published before Carry On, Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl gives us the story of Cather, her sister Wren (yes, their names are each half of Catherine), and their respective college experiences.
Cath is a perfect example of the 2010s it girl, by which I mean she is Not Like Other Girls. She wears glasses, favors oversized sweaters, has "emergency dance parties" to Kanye West songs, and is one of the most popular writers in the World Of Mages fandom, a thinly-veiled Harry Potter AU where Harry and Draco have the enemies-to-lovers arc they deserve didn’t get in the original series. What separates Cath from other characters like her is that all of these traits are not a replacement for an actual personality.
Writing is a deep love for Cath, and it turns from a coping skill into something that she wants to do as a career. We see her grow from someone who depends on fandom and media as a means of escapism/as a crutch, but through the rest of the book we see how this has brought her the ability to make friends and romantic relationships- how fandom pushes her out into the real world, as it were, when she is ready to try. She also does not leave fandom spaces entirely- there is no polarizing of online and offline spaces or placing it as superior to the other.
Fangirl also shows how the genre has progressed since the "golden age" of YA. The explosion of YA content and fanfiction in the 2010s can be likened to the increase in the genre after the publication of Maureen Daly's Seventeenth Summer, as well as the rise of the "problem novel" in the 60s and 70s.
The thing I love the most about Fangirl is that it gives incoming college students a more nuanced idea of what their first year experience can look like, and it doesn't shy away from the isolation and challenges freshman students can feel. For me, Cath's character was something solid for me to project on when I was struggling at that age, and her success made me believe that I could find that space for myself. Through being so candid about these experiences, Rowell continues the "clear-eyed and unflinching look" at the way young adults come of age and step into the world (Cart).
Above all, Fangirl is love letter to fandom. It shows how online and fanmade spaces bring people together and creates spaces for them to feel safe expressing themselves when the real world is still too threatening to exist in. I tried to do the same with my playlist. It's not too accurate to the time, since I included some of the songs I listened to as a college freshman, but I made sure to add plenty of Kanye for those dorm room dance parties.
Take a trip back to 2013 and listen to Cath's mixtape, or check out some fandom posts in her tumblr reblogs.

My ranking of South Park season 26 episodes + brief opinion on each! ✨
Deep Learning – probably one of the best South Park episodes to come out in a while; the return of Stendy is what easily makes this episode my favorite one from this season 🥹💙💜
Cupid Ye – hilarious episode all around, and I especially laughed my ass off at all the Cupid Ye bits and references to Kanye West😂😂😂
Worldwide Privacy Tour – I simply loved South Park dunking on Harry & Megan!
DikinBaus Hot Dogs – a classic South Park episode that revolved around both poor Butters and Kenny being roped into Cartman's bullshit, as per usual
Japanese Toilets – this one was a little more on the boring side for me, but it was funny regardless
Spring Break – this one was a doozy for me, mostly because I've never been a huge fan of Garrison's POTUS character arc and all that shit

My Predictions For 2024
A Roblox streamer will say the n word.
Southern state passes bill making it legal to shoot any trans person on sight.
The Barney Movie makes 8 barbillion dollars, Ben Shapiro then proceeds to make a 7 hour rant about it for views.
Kanye West says some shit about clones or whatever, then collabs with Billy Corgan on an album that never gets finished but gets leaked 3 months later and it's so good that everyone forgets both of their respective shittiness.
A hacker leaks something video game related, gets out scot free from insanity plea, escapes a mental institution and is never heard from ever again.
YouTube will go through a phase where it will start recommending Family Guy anime parodies to people for no reason.
Elon Musk temporarily changes the X icon to some meme from 2017.
A band tries to summon a demon in a concert, they give up and play Creep / Wonderwall instead.
A YouTuber/celebrity I semi-liked gets cancelled and I have to pretend like a give a shit.
People start unironically thinking the Star Wars Holiday Special was genius after Disney somehow makes a worse new one.
AI generated RedLetterMedia videos become a meme for 2 weeks.
DeadWingDork discovers a new fetish on DeviantArt that spawned from an obscure 2000s anime.
RebelTaxi will get semi-cancelled for sending Raven fetish commissions to an underage Furaffinity artist.
The Pokemon anime will show a 2 second gay / lesbian couple that will enrage conservatives so much that Tucker Carlson will cover it.
The Bluey subreddit gets investigated by the CIA after someone leaks classified alien documents on it.
A furry will spread their cum on something or someone, the furry fandom will be traumatized yet again.
Bill Cosby is killed in a mysterious incident, conspiracies ensue.
Twitter / X goes bankrupt and everyone migrates to another website that will be ruined in 5 years.
An early 2010s Let's Player will come out as trans, KiwiFarms will spout cancer about it.
Chris Chan will finally begin his homeless arc after being banned from every place in America.
The Hollywood strike only ends after CordorDigital threatens to make Anime Rock Paper Scissors 3, everyone in Hollywood continues to get screwed over anyways.
Biden dies 2 days after the election ends, whether or not he wins.
Penguinz0 will make a video about any one of these where he'll say the words troglodyte and butthole 7 times and call it content.
Someone will reply with the Apollo ball meme on this post.

hellooooooo can I (Kepler Enjoyer since time immemorial) ask about the Kepler Lives AU. thanks mwah
hiiiiiiiiiiiii :)
this is more than a few days late ik but i'm currently at a summer camp job where i am very busy!!! Hope this lil ramble is worth the wait! So, where to start 🤔 My Kepler Lives AU is something I’m currently tending on the back burner of my mind, but the seed was planted during my finale liveblog in June 2021 when I finished Wolf 359 all the way through for the first time! I did not see Kepler’s mini redemption arc reveal coming AT ALL and it FLIPPED A SWITCH in my brain. I already thought he was fun and an interesting character, but this long con was like catnip to me. Insert all the things Tumblr folks tend to say about their blorbos here. I needed him to have to live with the consequences of his actions. I needed him to have to define himself without Goddard. To define himself and his relationship with Jacobi without Goddard (and reconciling everything with Maxwell).  And with this, I can’t recall now exactly which came next, but I know the first major step was conceptualizing how Kepler could still be alive. Thankfully, the handwavey sci-fi of the Dear Listeners provided an answer. I know I’m not the first to invent the wheel that is alien clone Kepler, but I was hit with writing inspiration for a spin on Lovelace’s Change of Mind episode, but make it post-canon Kepler coming back. This idea became Special Episode: Performance of a Lifetime. Idk if you’ve read it since Kepler enjoyer already, but I used the fic to really find my interpretation of Kepler’s flavor of repression and play around with some cute SI-5 interactions while also laying a foundation for what Kepler Lives AU could be. If/when I get to writing this, I see this as being its prequel.  Beyond that, I have a massive outline document of my various SI-5/Kepcobi story ideas and lots of snippets and scenes jotted down as I had inspiration. I have a few broad start to finish outlines, but I’ve never done longfic before, so my thought process is that if I’m going to do this, I’m going to write a full first draft and then begin posting as I revise it. I have a Pinterest board, a Spotify playlist, plenty of memes, and lots of conversations with @wurmzirkus behind this idea. I imagine I’d write it as alternating Jacobi and Kepler perspectives and might have some alternate character POVs (such as Lovelace or Hera) as extra content.  Additionally, I see the fic including a brief time skip but being almost immediately post-canon. Shady Goddard subplot. Jacobi and Lovelace friendship and Lovelace and Kepler unlikely friendship that pokes at some interesting reflection on what the SI-5 dynamic was with Maxwell and where they all are now. Maxwell haunts the narrative. Jacobi takes Kepler in. Kepler adopts a street-cat, teaches a local kid chess (understatement of the year, believe me when I say little Miss Lydia is one of my FAVORITE OCs I have ever created), and is beloved by all the farmer’s market ladies and a local knitting circle. Hera has freedom via the internet, but still connects with all crew via an Amazon Alexa type set-up.  Additional fun to set the vibe: Stream the song Magnolia - Gang of Youths for Jacobi mindset upon returning to Earth imo and unironically Love Lockdown - Kanye West for part of my Kepcobi POV.  Gotta go! Follow-up questions welcome <3

PARIS — Yeezy is dead. Long live YZY. Stage three of the ambitions of Ye — the artist formerly known as Kanye West — to dress the world has begun.
Presumably that was supposed to be the takeaway from the surprise show of Paris Fashion Week, held off-schedule in an empty office tower just down the road from the Arc de Triomphe.
Though it turned out to be only nominally a fashion show and more like “The YZY Experience”: a chaotic mess of self-justification, confessional, bone-picking and messianic ambition, with a “White Lives Matter” shot of shock and provocation that overshadowed the clothes on the runway.
The rumors began during the weekend, just a day or so before the Balenciaga mud show. Ye was in Paris and was going to stage a fashion show — a little more than two weeks after ending his much-ballyhooed partnership with Gap.
Maybe it would happen Monday? Maybe not; Ye had just fired his PR agency. No wait, it was happening; he had found another agency. Then, Sunday night, a digital invite arrived. For the next evening. Guests were asked not to share the address.
Monday at 5:45 p.m., the Avenue de la Grande Armée was heaving with screaming fans and photographers. So much for secrecy. They outnumbered the show’s actual attendees by what seemed like 100 to one.YZY, spring 2023.Credit...YZYSZN9
Still, Anna Wintour came. So did John Galliano. Demna, the Balenciaga designer, and Cédric Charbit, its chief executive. Alexandre Arnault, the chief marketing officer of Tiffany & Company and a son of the LVMH chieftain Bernard Arnault. Then they all sat, playing with the soap-on-rope that looked like three granite blocks and had been left on every seat, waiting an hour and a half for the show to begin. (Well, OK, Anna and John left before the whole thing ended, but that was because they had another appointment, Ms. Wintour said.)
It was as good a reflection as anything this week of just how the culture and power structure of fashion and entertainment has changed in the past decade. Because it was 11 years ago, in early October 2011, that Ye held his first fashion show in Paris.
The line at that time was called “Kanye West.” Heavy on the luxury frills — leather and fur and gold hardware — it was widely dismissed by its audience. But this time there they were, the powers that be of the industry, jumping at the last minute to see what Ye had to deliver.
Join Vanessa Friedman to explore the direct impact of Fashion Week and its cultural influence, especially as virtual trends emerge.
Which involved a live choir featuring a host of children from Ye’s new Donda Academy in California as well as his daughter, North, and began with his rambling speech about critics who complained about his shows being late; his former manager, Scooter Braun; his hospitalization (Ye has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder); the pain of being called “crazy”; critics who complained that his clothes might not be well made; the people at Gap who didn’t get his vision; Bernard Arnault, whom he called “his new Drake”; and the news that he was establishing yet another version of his own fashion house and it started now.
Because “we changed the look of fashion over the last 10 years. We are the streets. We are the culture.” And when it comes to the culture, “I am Ye, and everyone knows I am the leader.”
Except this leader was wearing an oversize shirt with a photo of Pope John Paul II and the words “Seguiremos tu ejemplo” (“We will follow your example”) on the front, and “White Lives Matter” on the back — a phrase that the Anti-Defamation League has called hate speech and attributed to white supremacists (including the Ku Klux Klan), who began using it in 2015 in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The shirt was impossible to miss because, as he spoke, Ye’s image was projected behind him on a wall four stories high.
Besides, Candace Owens, the conservative commentator, was in the audience and wearing one, too. Later the shirt appeared as part of the collection, modeled by Selah Marley, the daughter of Lauryn Hill and granddaughter of Bob Marley. (Matthew M. Williams, the Givenchy designer who worked with Mr. West earlier in his career; Michéle Lamy, Rick Owens’s wife; and Naomi Campbell also walked in the show.)
It was the only message garment in the line, which was called SZN9 in reference to the Yeezy shows that had come before, created in conjunction with Shayne Oliver, the former designer of Hood By Air (Ye is nothing if not a great spotter and cultivator of talent). Which made it stand out even more in a show otherwise focused on garments that could simply be pulled onto the body, with no hardware — buttons or zips or snaps — involved, an idea that Ye first began talking about in the context of his work with Gap.
As it happened, a lot of this line looked like that line, especially that part of that line engineered with Balenciaga’s Demna, including the full-body catsuits that opened the show, the duvet-like puffer ponchos, the blouson jackets and sweats that made the torso into a sort of steroid-filled G.I. Joe triangle, the lack of seams and the semi-apocalyptic palette.
It has potential, but the import got swamped by the shirt, what it symbolized, and how its endorsement by a figure such as Ye — even one with a track record of wearing MAGA hats and toying with Confederate imagery — could be used as a rallying cry by those who already buy into its message.
“Indefensible behavior,” wrote Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the Vogue editor, on Instagram. Later adding, “there is no excuse, there is no art here.” Jaden Smith, in the audience, walked out. So did Lynette Nylander, the Dazed writer and editor.
The next day, at the Chanel show, Edward Enninful, the editor of British Vogue and the most powerful Black man in fashion media, called the shirt “inappropriate” and “insensitive, given the state of the world.”
Ms. Nylander had posted, “It doesn’t matter what the intention was … it’s perception to the masses out of context.”
Indeed, in the end, it is the shirt out of context that made the news: not Ye’s theories about dress, or his allegations that Mr. Arnault promised to set him up in his own house and then reneged and now has become Ye’s biggest competition (an LVMH representative said Mr. Arnault had “no comment”); not even Ye’s assertion that, having disrupted the fashion week spotlight, he still felt “at war.” If so, this was a grenade that backfired.
As to why he did it, backstage Ye declined to provide any theoretical framework. “It says it all,” he said, of the shirt. But what exactly does it say?
That he truly believes he can appropriate the language of racial violence with irony? That someday the power structure of Black and white will be reversed, and since he says this collection is the future, that’s the world he envisions? That Ye gets a kick out of pushing everyone’s buttons? That he wants to see how far he can go and doesn’t really care about, or think about, the collateral damage in the meantime (including to those children singing at his feet), despite the violence this could feed?
Or that, as he said in his speech, “You can’t manage me. This is an unmanageable situation.”
