Hey! It’s been a minute since I introduced myself, so I thought I would do that today! My name is Kali, pronounced like Kay-Lee, not like Kah-Lee. I am a mom to a 13 year old human and an 11 year old human, a 17 year old cat, and a 1 year old puppy. My husband and I have been married for 15 years, and together for 22 years. We met when he was in my brother’s kindergarten class. I am 18 months older than he is. I am a writer by trade and a reader for fun. I work in non-profit for the biggest cancer charity in Canada. Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family ~ Robert Kolker (2020) ❤️❤️❤️ Hidden Valley Road is a non-fiction book that is one part psychology textbook, one part family drama, and one part trauma narrative. Kolker grounds this book, that is ostensibly about schizophrenia, in the Galvin family. The Galvins had 12 children (10 boys and 2 girls), six of whom, all boys - referred to in the book as the Sick Boys - had schizophrenia to varying degrees of functionality. The first child was born in 1945, and the twelfth was born in 1965. This family turned out to be a critical Petrie dish for researchers to study the effect of nature vs nurture on schizophrenia. Were “refrigerator mothers” to blame, or were genetics? Or maybe both? This book was a NY Times Bestseller - one of the Top 10 in 2020, and an Oprah’s Book Club selection in 2020. The book really is that good, in that the information is invaluable, and the family story makes it more accessible, however, even as a voracious reader, this book took me weeks to get through. There is so much information, and my comprehension of research jargon is quite low, so I found myself putting the book down and coming back to it. I recommend Hidden Valley Road (so named after the quiet street that the family lives on) to anyone interested in psychology or medical mysteries. Do no look at it as a light fun read that you can breeze through. Know that this will require time and concentration. But it will be worth it. He is growing so fast, but sometimes he still needs his mama. Last night, with the new lockdown regulations in place, he wanted or needed to cuddle with me. Hours past his bedtime, he managed to settle in to sleep, and you had better believe that I enjoyed every single second of his small, deep breathing body curled up next to me. At his age, I don’t know when he will ever fall asleep in the crook of my arm again, so these small moments comfort me just as much as they do him. 2020 is hard on adults and kiddos alike. Every so often Dave surprises me with something new around the house. This weekend, our garburator broke, my closet fell down, our dryer stopped working and our cat developed an ear infection. While picking up supplies to repair two of these, he remembered that I had mentioned a desire for some mason jar shelving in our bathroom, so he picked up the supplies for these as well. Partway through the day, as I reorganized my repaired closet, he and our son began collecting mason jars from the kitchen and creating this beautiful wall! After 21 years together, these random acts of kindness and affection show me how much he still loves me and pays attention to what I say (at least some of the time).
