So... I did a thing and decided to write Neri into the live action timeline. This takes place somewhere shortly before they meet Usopp. So far, it's just Luffy, Nami and Zoro on the crew as well as Neri whom they just have met.

It's kind of from Neri's POV and the reason she's calling them by their titles rather than their names when thinking about them is that she still does not trust them. I think she will start to trust Luffy first because really how can you not?

"Stop inviting random people onto our ship. Especially if there's nothing they can contribute." "But… she's nice… and I wanted to help her… I'm sure she'll find a place in our crew!" "For the last time, we are not a crew!" The swordsman's words hurt and Neri, not waiting for the captain's answer, slowly moved away from the door. Sure, it had been nice of the rubber boy to help her out when she was on the run from her pursuers. Still, she shouldn't have come with them. This wasn't her place to be, this wasn't her home. The moment these people would learn who - or rather, what - she really was, she would end up being sold again. She would never be safe on a ship where she could come in contact with water so easily. The ship was still at the harbor. This was as good a time as any to leave the ship. She felt sad for the captain to had so nicely offered her a place in his crew, but it was too dangerous. And while rubber boy had been nothing but kind to her, the other two hadn't been as friendly. They clearly didn't trust her. And really, who could blame them? She hadn't been able to tell them anything without giving away her real species, so of course they didn't trust her. And once they knew… mermaids brought in the big cash, especially here in the East Blue, where they were so rare - it would only get her back to where she had fled from. After everything that had happened, after losing everyone she cared about, she wanted a home, a family, a place where she belonged. But this was not it. This could never be it. "Hey, where are you going?" the red-headed navigator asked when Neri slowly tried to climb off the ship. "I… have something… I mean… there's something I need to do", she stammered. She didn't want to say she was leaving - even that didn't feel safe anymore. Just disappear, she told herself. They barely know you. They will move on and you can… Well, that was the thing, the only place she probably would be safe was Fishman Island but it was all the way out there on the Grandline, the Pirate's Graveyard… and to get there, she would have to get on a ship - the very thing she couldn't do because on a ship, she would come in contact with water sooner or later and then everyone would know… "Well, suit yourself," the navigator said with a shrug. "Just be aware, we'll be heading out soon. If you're not back by then…" Neri nodded. She wouldn't be back by then and she figured the navigator knew that. Quickly, she left the ship and started to walk across the harbor, pushing past people. It was a small island but the harbor was still pretty busy during this time of the day. There were people loading the ships, sailors were coming and going, children playing in the middle of all this, running around and causing people to stumble, and passengers impatiently waiting to board one of the bigger ships. It was almost too much noise to handle but Neri kept on walking. For a moment, she thought someone had called her name - maybe the captain? It sounded like him. He had saved her the other day and invited her to join them and she had actually liked him. Still, it wasn't meant to be. Surely, he would understand that she had made her decision. She kept on walking without looking back.

Leaving the harbor, it got even more crowded. There was a market nearby and people all went into this direction, pushing Neri with them. She started to feel anxious. It was too loud, too crowded, too many people just shoving her out for their way when she wasn't walking fast enough. But walking on land was still something she was getting used too. Under the sea, things were not like this - not this crowded, not this loud, not this harsh. Nearby, some men were starting to yell at each other. This brought back unpleasant memories from getting yelled at herself while being imprisoned. Quickly, Neri stepped sideways into the shadows. It was the entry to a side alley with huge, unpleasant smelling dumpsters lining the brick walls on both sides. It was quieter here, the further she kept walking, so she went on, ignoring the unpleasant smell. Maybe this alley would take her away from all the noise and all the people. Sure, she still had no place to go, but anything was better than here right now. But suddenly, she was no longer alone. Behind her, voices got louder and louder. They were talking to each other, it seemed. She stopped and leaned against a wall that belonged to a tall rundown warehouse building. Maybe they would walk past her, minding their own business. Unfortunately, as she had already learned, humans rarely did. These ones were no exception. They were adult males, three of them, with bottles in their hands, obviously already - or still - drunk at this time of the day. Neither of them looked too pleasant. Neri shrank back and just hoped and prayed they would walk past without noticing her. They nearly did. But then one of them turned his head and suddenly stopped. "Look at this," he said. "A little lady…" Quickly, Neri turned, and, avoiding eye contact, tried to keep walking. Unfortunately, she was immediately grabbed and yanked back. "Hey little lady, not so fast," the guy from before said. "Let's have a proper look at you, alright?" "No thank you," Neri muttered and started to run. Unfortunately, she immediately was grabbed. One of the guys was firmly holding her with her arms behind her back while the other two were leering at her. "Please let me go!" "Please let me go!" they mocked her. "There's no chance we're letting you get away, sweetheart. You're too pretty!" Neri started to panic. She tried to kick them, but they only laughed at her attempts to get free. One of them roughly yanked at her hair for trying to kick him. "Be nice," he warned her. "Or we'll show you just how nasty we can get!" "You're already nasty!" she replied, still struggeling. Was this really how it all would end? Were all humans like this? Other than the rubbery captain and his two friends, they all had treated her like shit. Ever since she had been caught and dragged on land, it had gotten worse and worse. "Let's show her just how nasty we can get," one of them laughed. They were all grabbing her now. She screamed and kicked and bit one of them in the arm, but that only resulted in her getting slapped in the face. Neri screamed again when she was thrown onto the dirty ground like a piece of trash. Then someone was over her - and then he wasn't anymore.

"And just what are you going to show her?" another voice asked. It was the swordsman's voice and Neri breathed a sign of relief. At the same time she was wondering how he got here and why he was here. She had thought the navigator had understood that she had left for good. "How is that any of your business?" one of the guys sneered. "Let's knock this freak out", the second one said. "Ummm, have you looked at him? He's carrying three swords," the third one said, slowly stepping back. "So what?" The first one rolled his eyes. "He can only use one at a time anyway." Next thing they knew, all three of them were bleeding. Their bottles were on the ground. And the swordsman was holding two of his swords. "I can get the third one out, too," he said. The first guy looked like he thought it would be a good idea to get into a fight, but luckily, the other two started dragging him away. Neri hastily got onto her feet. She wanted to turn and run away too but her legs were shaking. "Next time I'll see you, I'll cut off your hands," the swordsman called after them. They weren't even looking back. He turned his attention towards Neri. "And what are you doing? Why aren't you on the ship?" "I was… leaving?" She thought that had been quite clear and besides, neither he and the navigator had been too impressed when their captain had invited her to join them. "Oh yeah? Well next time, you run that by Luffy first. He still thinks you're on the crew." She threw him a look. "I thought you're not a crew?" "Well, Luffy thinks we are… and for now, we have some common goals, so… didn't you say you want to reach the Grandline too?" Yes, she wanted to get to Fishman Island - maybe there she would finally be save again… "Yes, but… I'm just a random person your captain picked up on the street," she said. "I heard you talking. And I mean, you're not wrong…" He grimaced. "Yeah, well, I'm trying to prevent Luffy from adding every weirdo we come across to this so-called crew. If you prove yourself to not be a weirdo… you're welcome to join as long as you pull your weight on board." Not a weirdo… well, from a human perspective, she definitely was weird. But maybe, just maybe… she could hide that a little longer until they were on the Grandline at least?

Looking down the dirty and dark alley, she realized that she needed a place to stay and people to rely on. This wasn't her world. She had to rely on someone else, even if it was only temporary. "I'll try not to be burden," she replied. "I've never been at sea before." Well, on a boat, she silently added. The swordsman turned and started walking and she hurried along to keep up with him. "How did you find me, anyway?" she wanted to know. "I didn't," he replied. "I was actually trying to take a shortcut. The streets on this island are just really confusing." "Are they?" she wondered, following him out of the alley. There was, after all, only one main road leading from the harbor in the direction of the market. "Are they not?" He looked back at her. "I mean, I can't even see the ocean from here." She didn't know if she should giggle or not. For someone wielding three swords, he was surprisingly clueless when it came to directions. "That's because you're looking in the wrong direction," she said, deciding to surpress the giggles for now. "The ocean's over there." Irritated, he looked around. Yes, there was the ocean, and it wasn't even that far away. The deep blue color could clearly be spotted from where they were standing. "Like I said, it's confusing," he grumbled. Finally, he walked in the right direction and she followed him, slightly amused. And maybe… her new crewmates weren't that perfect either? So perhaps she wouldn't feel completely out of place all the time…

The ship came into view and it looked ready to sail. It was a small one and there had already been talk about getting a bigger one. Luffy, the captain, was waving at them. "There you are! Come on, let's go!" Quicky, they climbed on board. "I'm sorry," Neri said to Luffy, feeling she should at least say something to explain the delay. "I was just…" "Got everything sorted out?" Luffy asked her, grinning. "Well, then I guess we're all set. Let's get going!" "Set the sails!" the navigator shouted at them. And soon, they were out at sea, the island behind them getting smaller and smaller. In front of them, the ocean shimmered in the deepest blue, spreading far and wide before them. It was a marvelous sight and Neri, leaning over the railing, with the wind in her long hair, suddenly felt very calm and at peace with her situation for the first time since she had been captured. Maybe, just maybe, everything would turn out okay?

Ideas that first popped into my mind when certain OCs came to exist… Neri: it's a show about pirates, there's GOT to be a mermaid Niara: I want a character that uses a devil fruit mmmh what about plants/flowers (strangely enough, none of my pokemon oc's ever cared much about the grass type lol) Azura: I want a cool sword fighting lady Cordelia: I want a hot fierce type of character that looks good in black and that doesn't take anyone's crap Ellaria: came into the picture much later, I only recently decided somewhat on her looks, only things I know for sure is pale green eyes and can sort of see the future. Might never make it into any kind of story but she popped into my mind so here we go. Ginny: falls into the category "looks cute but can probably kill you".

💋 How affectionate are they with their friends? Their family? Their romantic partner(s) (if they have any)? Are they more physical or emotional when it comes to displaying their affection? Why?

Neri is very affectionate. She's lost her family, so her friends are literally her family now and she's always willing to give someone a hug, she smiles at them a lot, is always super exited to see them if they have been separated for a while. She is a geniunely nice and caring person and everyone on the crew likes her and are happy to share hugs and cuddles with her. Now, when it comes to Zoro, he's not an overly emotional person to begin with, so it's mostly Neri who initiates the hug or the hand-holding or cuddling (he usually only initiates it when it's just the two of them). It's just something that comes naturally to her. It also might have something to do her having lost her whole family, so it's kind of her way to show to her friends what they mean to her and that she's happy to be with them.

🍑 Where is your OC’s favourite place to relax or calm down? Recount a story of their time spent in this place! What makes it so special to them?

She's a mermaid so I'd have to say the ocean. It's where she feels completely at home, whether she's just drifting along with her eyes closed or diving down deeper and deeper. She does provide the crew with a good amount of seafood which is a good excuse for her to go into the ocean and sometimes it takes a while for her to resurface simply because she lost track of time and was enjoying herself in the water so much.

📀 How easy is it to shock your OC? To confuse them? To lie to them, to manipulate them? How are they with feelings of trust? Can your OC be trusted?

When the strawhats met Neri, she had just lost her whole family to the cruelty of humans and barely escaped herself. It took her a long while to fully trust them but now, she trusts them completely. Over time, she started trusting other people more as well after having spend some time with the humans and having learned that not all of them are bad. Still, she's always a bit wary when meeting new people. In the beginning, when she was completely new to the human world, it was quite easy to shock or confuse her and, due to her lack of knowledge in so many areas, it was also easy to lie to her and manipulate her. This has changed a bit over time since she has since gained more knowledge and experience. She herself can absolutely be trusted.

🌀 Where is your OC from? Where were they born? Do they still live there, if not why did they move? If they still live in the area how has it changed since their childhood? How many places has your OC lived in and where has been their favourite?

Neri is actually not from Fishman Island as many would assume. Her group of merpeople has lived in the East Blue for a very long time but remained hidden and had little to no contact to humans until the fateful day where they were discovered and captured. Neri is the only survivor of this, having escaped by chance and having met Luffy, Zoro and Nami. Since then, she's been with the Strawhats and while the ocean will always be her favorite place due to her being a mermaid, the Thousand Sunny is her home now. She's spend the timeskip on Fishman Island but declined the offer to stay there and went with the Strawhats into the New World. They've been to many islands, starting all the way back in the East Blue, then the first part of the Grandline, then in the New World... I guess since they're traveling the ocean, you could still say her home is the ocean. (And home is where the heart is, so it's with the crew)

🌸 What does your OC’s voice sound like? Their laugh? Are they good at singing? Do they have an accent? Her voice is pleasant, soft and melodic and her laughter is quite cheerful and contagious. She possesses the beautiful singing voice of many mermaids and can even use it to incapacitate men. She doesn't have an accent but sometimes might pronounce words she's never heard before (since she still doesn't know everything in the human world) in a funny way.

So I came across this post today and I just had to go and try... damn I was so good with photoshop many years ago but now I was just like ??? the whole time so in the end, I ditched photoshop and tried photopea. Thanks to @auxiliarydetective clear instructions I did manage to create something! Started the day with a headache but now I'm happy :)

Unsure on the power scaling though - those really depends where the character is in the story (Niara's case mostly- she will get a lot stronger later on) and in Neri's case, well, she is pretty strong near or in the water but not that much far from it, so I tried to find a middle ground. Unsure of where Cordy's power will take her but at least Azura already is an accomplished swordswoman... I did leave the two unfinished characters out of it because they still don't have names...

I tend to overthink these things... coz Azura is pretty unhinged when drunk but otherwise not so much... also, I measured strenght as in overall strenght, meaning devil fruit power, special skills in battle and such...

I made height comparisons for the crews now as well.

We have the Strawhats pre timeskip:

Law is not on there (as he is not a strawhat) but I love the fact that he is so much taller than Niara. It's not that much of a difference with Neri and Zoro.

Then we have the Cross Guild members + Cordelia because she didn't fit anywhere else yet:

And last but not least we have some of the Revolutionaries:

I originally started to put others like Ivankov on the chart as well but then the rest of the characters were suddenly very very tiny, so I decided only to focus on the five that were featured in the short stories I wrote.

In regards to my new character Mizuki Midori I made a height chart for the marines too:

I guess since I'm doing this OC thing I'm going all out so I answered some OC questions I found (One Piece OCs)

I ended up picking only the questions that fit in their "universe", so there's bits and pieces from all of these questionaires.

How did you come up with the OC’s name? Neri: When I was young there was an australian show about a girl living in the ocean and her name was Neri. I took that and assuming it comes from Nerissa, it's the name of a nymph. Then I took the name Sirena from the Mako Mermaids show and her last name Kaiyo means ocean/sea Kaiyo Neri Sirena therefore sounds like a good name for a mermaid.^^ Niara: I wanted mostly names that could be associated with the ocean since this is a pirate show. Kaito means "the one flying over the sea" and Niara means "bright, clear water". Azura: Nagisa means seashore and Azura means sky blue. Cordelia: Cordelia means daughter of the sea. Yes, I looked up possible ocean themed names for all of them. Lady X and Lady Y don't have names yet. Lady X was called Vilandra in the first draft but I really don't like it. If she ever gets a name, I want it to be a longer one and kind of mysterious sounding... How old are they? (Or approximate age range) Neri: 18 Niara: 18 Azura: 30 Cordelia: 24 Lady X: no age yet but she would be the oldest Lady Y: maybe early twenties?

Do they have any love interest(s)? Neri: Zoro Niara: Law Azura: undefined Cordelia: undefined Lady X: maybe? Lady Y: maybe?

What do they do best? Neri: swimming Niara: generally just having fun with whatever she does Azura: sword fighting Cordelia: flirting, rolling her eyes, sarcasmn Lady X: telling the future Lady Y: I want her to either have a really cool power no one sees coming or a really cool fighting style

What do they hate to do? Neri: Wearing shoes Niara: cleaning, following the rules Azura: wearing cheap clothes, cheap jewelry and cheap everything and being in dirty, messy surroundings Cordelia: dealing with Buggy the Clown (she came across him in one of the stories my friend and I wrote and she did not enjoy it!) Lady X: knowing something bad would happen and not being able to stop it Lady Y: no answer yet

What is one of your OC’s worst memories? Neri: losing her entire family Niara: being forced to join the navy and then leaving her entire family behind to pursue her own dreams of freedom Azura: her parents being killed Cordelia: living in the streets as a kid on her own both Lady X and Lady Y have sad backstories too but they are not developed that much yet

Is their current design the first one? Neri: I think she had green eyes at first but then I decided on brown eyes. Actually, I couldn't decide on a design forever. Niara: Her hair is still long but not as way too long as it was in the first draft. Her hair went from ordinary brown to a lighter/slightly reddish maybe version (but still brown overall) and the newest addition are her freckles. Azura: Pretty much kept her design. Cordelia: Also kept her design. Lady X: I think she was a blonde at first. Black hair was also considered, then white, then grey, now it's maybe a really really pale blonde/maybe pale grey/white... idk something very pale though Lady Y: was still a blonde yesterday, now I'm thinking oooh but I have every haircolor now except red... xD Also, recently I accidentally added a scar on one of her picrews, so now I want her to have scars?

How many sibling does your OC have? Neri: it is mentioned that she had quite a few siblings since I image that fish people clans are quite big? She did not grew up on Fishman Island (because she was created before I started to read the Manga), so this probably was a separate community in the East Blue (where she met the Strawhats after being the only survivor after humans captured her entire family) Niara: I initially started with four or five but reduced them to three later on. At some point, Rear Admiral Hina was turned into an older sister of Niara XD Azura: She's an only child Cordelia: unknown since she doesn't remember anything and was found wandering around on her own, stealing from people as a kid Lady X: unknown, probably an only child Lady Y: unknown

What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like? Neri: I imagine her bond with her parents was very close. Niara: She was close with her late mother but does not have a good relationship with her father at all. It didn't take him long to put a bounty on her head when he learned that she had become a pirate. Azura: she was close with her parents Cordelia: unknown Lady X: unknown Lady Y: unknown

Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC? Honestly, I never want to kill my OCs. The only one I could see dying is Lady X for noble reasons but it's highly unlikely that I will end up actually killing a character of mine

has there been any part of having this oc (designing, writing, drawing, etc...) that was difficult? Neri: she was the first One Piece OC so creating her was the hardest. I just didn't feel anything was right for her. Until bamm, all the puzzle pieces just fit. Niara: actually, she was the easiest Azura and Cordelia: not many problems Lady X: she hasn't even gotten a name yet Lady Y: she hasn't gotten a name or much of anything else really so...

Nickname? Neri: Nixie, although nobody called her that so far Niara: Nia, Nini Azura: - Cordelia: Cordy Lady X: lol she's not even named yet Lady Y: same here^^

Devil fruit power? Neri: - Niara: plant fruit Azura: - Cordelia: can create barriers Lady X: I might change that but so far her power is not a devil fruit power Lady Y: undecided

Biggest goal in life? Neri: she just wants to be happy with her friends (who are her new family) and never wants them to be apart from each other for long Niara: to have adventures and see the world and be free Azura: to see the world government burn Cordelia: to figure out her own past Lady X: something to do with the future/secrets of the past perhaps Lady Y: undecided

I just realized the height differences between Neri and Zoro and Niara and Law... damn those guys are tall. Even Azura, who I consider average height for a woman, would have felt looking up at a skycraper when facing Crocodile in Marineford lol. And Niara's so tiny... especially next to Law... luckily I'm a sucker for height differences hehe

I tried to find Neri's style and came to the conclusion that she would probably wear flowy, breezy outfits. She would probably find anything that's too tight very uncomfortable since as a mermaid, she's literally wearing nothing but her skin. Also a headcannon I have is that she usually walks barefoot since shoes are also very uncomfortable for her. This might change a bit if over the years but that might be her overall style for now.

Actually, since you didn't name a character, I have something @ indig0pearl wrote for Neri and Zoro today:

"Ummm……," Neri had the zipper in her hand again. She glanced at Zoro, but he was drinking his sake. "Ahem...!!!" Neri nudged Zoro. He didn't notice anything at first, so she almost had to grab him and shake him. "Huh? What's wrong?" he asked, startled. "Um… my zipper is stuck….," Neri said, pointing to her jacket, as Niara had suggested she should. "…." Zoro raised his eyebrows. Then he looked around. Neri followed his gaze, which lingered on Yuka. "Shouldn't you ask the seamstress instead?" he wanted to know. He could open just about anything with his swords, but he didn't know whether zippers counted. "Ah-well… she won't be able to open it…, " Neri said desperately. Zoro stood up and Neri beamed. She also jumped to her feet - this time he had understood the hint really quickly! Now they could go and have some time alone! However, Zoro grabbed Neri's jacket and before she could protest, he ripped the zipper down. "It was really easy," he said in amazement. "…." Neri made a long face. That hadn't gone the way she had wanted it to. "Wait!!" she said hastily as Zoro was about to sit down again. "What's wrong, is something else stuck?" the swordsman asked with raised eyebrows. "Um… well….," Neri lowered her eyes, her cheeks red. She was pretty sure the other would notice soon. "Could you… maybe come with me for a moment…?" "Where?" Zoro wondered. "Well… to the cabins." Neri pointed towards the door that led below deck. "To ALL of them?" Zoro asked, irritated. "N-no!!! I mean… to my cabin….," Neri groaned. Zoro was such a dumbass sometimes. And she just wasn't used to giving a guy certain hints. But at least he nodded and then started walking - in the completely wrong direction, namely towards the kitchen!

I was asked if all of my One Piece OCs belong in the same universe... and I mean they totally could?

Neri is the first of them to join the strawhats. She joins all the way back in the East Blue when there's still only Luffy, Zoro and Nami.

Niara first meets Luffy at Marineford, gets saved and ends up on Amazon Lily with him, where they bond over [Spoiler] and when Luffy decides his crew should train for two years and they'll all meet up again afterwards, he extends an invitation to Niara which she accepts. So she joins them after the timeskip on Sabaody and travels to Fishmen Island with them.

Azura is a Warlord of the Sea, so they'll meet her eventually. Zoro goes against her in a swordfight and loses. (He will win eventually at some point after the timeskip) Azura's long term is to take down the World Government and she will learn that they're not the final enemy. I think eventually she will form alliances with the Revolutinary Army... perhaps other former warlords and/or Cross Guild? I don't see her joining the Strawhats though. But I can see her starting to support or at least tolerate Luffy at some point.

Cordelia is tricky to answer because I haven't decided yet where she will turn up and who will have taken her in and where she actually comes from. I think she will work at a bar at the beginning but I can absolutely see her joining a pirate crew later on. Maybe she'll join one of the Supernova's crews, who knows.

Ginny will be at Marineford but I don't think she will interact with Luffy there. Maybe with Niara since most likely they've both been in Ace's crew at the same time and if so, they are not friends. Ginny will show up again in Dressrosa where she's forced to compete in the arena and is trying to get her hands on Ace's devil fruit. There she'll meet at the Strawhats, Law and Sabo and the others from the Revolutionary Army and she will be taken in by them.

And Ellaria will mostly interact with the Revolutionary Army and the people they come in contact with, perhaps the Strawhats too. There will be a time when she's doing her own thing too but that's still undecided. Anyway, she's not going to be a Strawhat either.

I was recently thinking of adding a marine, but... I already have six OCs, so maybe that should be enough...

the basics:

name: Kaiyo Neri Sirena age: 18 years old zodiac sign: aquarius one good trait: fiercely loyal to her "family" (aka the crew) one bad trait: sometimes rather insecure

habits:

one bad habit: there's so much to discover in the human world that sometimes, she forgets to be careful. one good habit: always willing to help. one habit they can’t break: going barefoot. She hates wearing shoes. If she must, it's flipflops. If she has to wear any other kind of shoes, she will try to get rid of them sooner than later. one they’ve broken: picking up everything that looks pretty. The ocean floor might be fair game but in the human world, most pretty shiny things belong to people. what they’re afraid of: after having lost her entire family she desperately clings to the new one she found in the strawhats. she's absolutely afraid of losing them too one day.

family:

their family:a mermaid clan living in the East Blue, which consisted of several families, including Neri's parents and her many sisters favorite childhood memory: swimming in the ocean with her sisters, her mother singing to her favorite childhood toy: oh, all that stuff her older siblings brought home from capsized ships... the first ever actual toy was from a sunken ship too, it was a human-looking doll and Neri carried it everywhere until her sisters broke it during a fight embarrassing story: the siblings were forbidden to go on land but one day Neri and one of her sisters did so anyway. Fortunately they didn't get very far because they had no idea how to walk on legs and were trying to crawl across the beach favorite family member: her mama a story about that family member: Neri got her beautiful singing voice from her mother. All of her siblings could sing but Neri was the only one who could match her mother's voice.
